Panelists adopt technology to t needs of dairy businesses

Farmers share insight at Data and Innovation Summit

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The dairy industry has long been an industry of growth and success with the adaptation of technology to better understand and use data available on each farm.

“Data is one of the most important things we generate,” Robert Webb said. “Data is worth a lot to me. There’s an obligation, as a purebred breeder, to share important data with the industry to move along.”

Webb owns Summit Farms and Webb-Vue Holsteins where he and his family milk 650 cows near Plymouth, Wisconsin.

Webb was joined by three other farmers – Mack Drees, of Peshtigo, Wisconsin; Chris Szydel, of Kewaunee, Wisconsin and Dr. Portia Seckerson of Rochester, Minnesota – who spoke of their experience and

reasoning for adapting varying technologies on their farms during the Data and Innovation Summit June 30 in Sioux Falls. The event garnered the attention of National Holstein Convention attendees as well as commercial producers in the Midwest.

Drees go all in with dairy tools Drees and his family were at a crossroads in their dairying career, wanting to continue the family operation but knowing their then-current structure was not feasible for their longterm goals. At the time, they were milking 90 cows and had limited use of technology on the farm.

In 2015, the family expanded to 250 cows and installed four automated milking systems at Drees Dairy Farm LLC. “That is what we decided we had to do to keep this a family farm with just our family,” Drees said. “We have 250 employees, the cows, and if they’re not happy, we are not happy.”

While Drees and his family implemented varying technology all at once, he said there were expectations with each new system.

The Peshtigo dairyman has found that regardless of the technology and its intended purpose, the biggest asset is the data collected. Drees uses the data to make better breeding

decisions in a timely manner.

“When we went for robots, we did it all at once, and it was a really big learning curve,” Drees said. “We had to have a full grasp on how we were utilizing the data. If you don’t use the data, then maybe you have a lot of wasted money there and that can be a tough road ahead.”

In the future, Drees hopes the technology companies will communicate better so that the

farm’s data on breeding, milk production, herd health and more can be useful across platforms.

“As dairy farmers, we’re in the driver seat right now,” Drees said. “It’s easy for us to sit, but what we cannot do is not give our feedback (to these companies). We have to tell them what works well and what we want.”

ConƟnued from SUMMIT | Page 2 Webb is cautiously optimistic of industry innovations It was the late 1980s when Webb implemented a record-keeping system on his farm. That decision was the result of a devastating re where all previous records were hand-written in a notebook and lost in the ames.

“The fact that we didn’t have breeding information was a loss that was hard to start over,” Webb said.

“Now, we store it. It’s important to start with those records.”

Today, with the use of an activity monitoring system, milk testing, classication data and embryo work, Webb’s herd averages 100 pounds of milk per day and the health of the herd has never been better.

Yet, with all the technology on the farm, Webb’s greatest asset has been his employees.

“If I did anything right, it was to hire really good people to manage our farm,” Webb said. “It’s important to work with people who are deeply invested with this information just as it’s important to use this technology.”

With the work of his trusted and skilled team, Webb has been able to put a renewed focus on each individual cow.

“Maintaining milk quality is our most important task,” Webb said. “If we’re not selling milk, we’re not getting a check and that comes down to cow health. If you can’t manage one cow, you can’t manage 100, you can’t manage 1,000.”

In time, Webb is hopeful to address mobility on his farm by analyzing data collected through genomics.

“There are cooperative efforts that are using detailing motion of a cow and her ability to move,” Webb said. “I’m excited to get the research and breed out problems we have with that. Cautious optimism is what I feel when I think of data in the dairy industry.”

Technology, data allows Szydel to manage each cow Szydel has been an integral employee of Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy for 27 years. The herd manager oversees the 6,500-cow Holstein-Jersey crossbred herd that is housed on two farm sites.

As the dairy has developed, so has the use of technology to make decisions that enable the best care for each cow.

“There is a lot of technology coming out, and we have a full-time electrician on the dairy, but we are limited at how fast we can get the systems implemented,” Szydel said. “With all the programs and maximizing those systems, that’s helped us on labor efciencies and knowing the cows are

Notably, with a herd monitoring system and DairyComp 305 for data entry, Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy has increased milk production by 5 pounds, reduced hormone use by 40% and lowered the cull rate by 16%, among other successes.

There is a higher compliance among employees and a developed system for checks and balances, said Szydel.

“We really depend on technology and make sure we’re caring for the cows to the best of our abilities,” he said.

Before implementing each technology, Szydel and his team evaluate its purpose and benet for the farm. Szydel considers the return on investment and if the system can be intertwined with another existing one on the farm.

“We’re trying to grab new technology as fast as we can, and we’re working with our teams,” Szydel said. “It takes a lot to incorporate it, and our team is great at adapting to it.”

Next on the list for this farm are sort gates to help with labor savings.

“We want to take care of the animals in a timely manner,” Szydel said.

“It’s also a checks and balances list checked off.”

Seckerson, family make survival decision to adopt technology Blue Horizon Dairy Farms began down the path of technology and data by force after a farm accident shifted the outlook of the farm.

“It was about a year and a half ago,” Seckerson said. “My brother died in a farm accident and that moved us into technology. That day when he passed, I was in the parlor milking cows because we didn’t have someone show up to work. My dad wanted to keep farming, so we had to gure out a way to do it.”

Unlike the other farmers on the panel who spoke of evaluating the various technologies and calculating returns on investment before implementing, Seckerson said her family’s adaptation was purely a survival decision.

“And, it’s been a great decision,” she said.

The 700-cow farm uses a herd health monitoring system and pays particular attention to the rumination activity.

“We developed a rumination protocol to help our employees troubleshoot problems when I’m not there,” Seckerson said. “It helps them manage feed bunk and heat abatement, for example.”

Seckerson owns a veterinary practice in southern Minnesota and has adapted similar technology on her clients’ farms to help develop better protocols based on the data retrieved.

Using data and technology goes beyond the milking herd for Seckerson.

With the youngstock, Seckerson and her family have also installed a chlorine dioxide pump, which has essentially eliminated cryptosporidiosis and lung ultrasounds.

If technology assists in the day-today operations of Seckerson’s farm, then it is something they consider implementing.

“We want to streamline things and make it easier for our employees and simple to follow,” Seckerson said.

“We’re doing all this to keep going to the next generation.”

Elroy Fair is a family effort Clark siblings show seven animals

ELROY, Wis. – The beginning of summer is a busy time of year for dairy farmers as they work to get planting done and bring in that rst crop of hay. For the Clark family, this time also includes showing animals at various fairs.

“I’ve been showing at the Elroy Fair for the last ve years,” Peyton Clark said. “This will be my last year.”

Peyton, 20, was joined by two of her siblings, brother Payne,18, and sister Payge, 15, at the Elroy Fair June 22-26 in Juneau County near Elroy.

Their parents, Todd and Tracy, milk 30 cows near Wilton along with the rest of the children Payjah, 12, and Payson, 10.

The siblings said it takes the effort of the entire family to make showing animals at the fair possible.

Their parents take on chore responsibilities at home that would otherwise be the kids’ responsibility.

When Peyton is not showing at the fair, she is normally in charge of feeding calves, bringing cows in from the pasture and feeding grain in the stanchion barn, while Payne runs corn silage out of the silo for the cows. Payne is also involved in the farm’s eldwork, helping his dad put up small square bales of hay, producing haylage and chopping corn silage. Payge lls in whenever the others are not available, often starting calf chores for Peyton. She also prepares meals for the family while her parents are busy farming.

The farm is also home to a herd of 80 beef cows. The family farms 350 acres of cropland.

Seven animals made up the Clark family’s show string this year.

Peyton brought a dry cow and a 3-year-old cow. The 3-year-old was selected based on her body type and temperament, while the dry cow has previous experience being shown.

“I’ve been showing her every year at this fair since I started,” Peyton said. “She is kind of a pet cow.”

ling. This heifer was raised at the farm.

“She is really docile,” Payge said. “She is short but has good dairy qualities.”

Payge also showed a spring calf that was selected because she was a homegrown animal. For the past few months, Payge has trained the calf by walking her with the halter. The calf was also washed every day for the three days leading up to the fair.

Payne brought a 2-year old cow, a dry cow and a yearling heifer.

A fun aspect for the Clarks is the involvement of their extended family. Their cousin, Jaden Dreier, showed with them this year. They also have help from their grandma.

Peyton’s dry cow delivered her calf at the fair, surprising the whole family.

“It was denitely exciting because we were not expecting it,” Peyton said. “Since she calved at the Elroy Fair, I decided to name the calf Ellie.”

The siblings said the best thing about the Elroy Fair is the environment.

“It’s fun to get together with farm friends and hang out with other farm kids,” Payne said.

Peyton agreed.

“Everyone is friendly and respectful,” Peyton said. “It’s a lot of work, but we all work at it together.”

Farm nancial planning program available for producers As farmers begin to make nancial projections for the new year, there are resources available from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach that can help.

A popular choice is the Farm Financial Planning Program, which includes access to seven different farm nancial associates in addition to software and helpful publications and guides.

Nancy Brannaman, a nancial associate from east central Iowa, said the program allows producers and the associate to take a broad look at what’s going on within an operation, where the operator would like to be in the future and what must be done for success.

“We use budgeting software that allows us to analyze a farm’s current situation, beginning balance sheet and income statement, costs of production and family living expense,” she said. “With all of this information, we can look not only at protability but also debt repayment capacity and alternative business options, based on cash ow from farm and non-farm income.”

Like the other nancial associates, Brannaman has a background in risk management and nance. She is the farm manager for her family farm, in Illinois, and worked for nearly seven years as a farm management specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

Ann Johanns, program specialist with economics at ISU, said the associates give an honest assessment about the path forward.

The associate offers a big picture look at the farm, and it’s up to the farmer to make specic changes and to contact the specialists who can help. While working with nancial associates is important, Johanns said it’s equally important to follow up with the specialists the associate recommends.

“It’s all inter-related,” Johanns said. “The associates are one piece of looking at the overall picture.”

Brannaman said the clients she helps are often looking to enter farming or expand in a way that allows more family members to work for the farm.

She said the nancial program also helps families who just need to get everyone on the same page, especially when multiple generations are involved.

“I value family farming and fully employing family members on farms and supporting small towns and rural schools,” she said. “As an associate, I get to accomplish this by helping farm families and new farmers gure out how to bring in new family members, and use their talents and interests in the family operation.”

Storm damage-affected farmers may be eligible for zero-interest nancing The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Rural Finance Authority Board determined that an emergency exists in parts of Minnesota due to recent severe weather, which makes zero-interest loans available for Minnesota farmers whose operations may be suffering from damage caused by storms.

The Disaster Recovery Loan Program can be used to help cover lost revenue or expenses not covered by insurance. The funds can be used to help clean up, repair or replace farm structures and replace livestock.

The declaration applies to physical property damage and/or death of livestock taking place due to heavy rains and high winds in May 2022.

Eligible farmers must have received at least 50% of their annual gross income from farming for the past three years and will work through their bank to secure the loans from the RFA. Interest rates on the RFA portion of the loan are currently set at zero percent.

The Minnesota Legislature this spring appropriated $2.5 million in additional funds to replenish the revolving loan account that funds the Disaster Recover Loan Program, which has recently been used for highly pathogenic avian inuenza poultry losses, drought and COVID-19 expenses.

Dairy Shrine announces Pioneer Award Winners Four pioneers of the dairy industry will soon join the ranks of past Dairy Shrine award winners. The Pioneer award recognizes four industry leaders each year who have made signicant contributions to dairy throughout their lives. The 2022 winners are Scott Armbrust, Jack Hardesty (posthumously), Tom Morris and Charlie Will.

Armbrust, Morris, Will, and the family of Jack Hardesty will receive the Pioneer awards at Dairy Shrine’s Awards Banquet on Monday, October 3rd in Madison, Wisconsin.

Cash rental rates rise signicantly across Iowa Stronger commodity prices and farmland values are leading to higher cash rents across most of the state. The most recent annual survey of cash rental rates for Iowa farmland showed that rates increased an average of 10.3% in 2022, to $256 per acre.

This is the third consecutive and largest uptick in cash rents since 2013, when rents peaked at $270 per acre – a level 5.5% higher in nominal terms than in 2022. In comparison, nominal corn and soybean prices received by farmers in Iowa declined by 16 and 11%, respectively, since mid-2013.

Planting soybeans.“Higher cash rents means lower margins on rented land, but current corn and soybean prices should support positive margins for most tenants in 2022,” said Alejandro Plastina, associate professor in economics and extension economist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “Somewhat more concerning is the picture for 2023, with expected higher input costs across the board and stagnant to declining crop prices.”

The survey was based on 1,401 responses from farmers, landowners, professional farm managers and realtors, agricultural lenders and others with knowledge of cash rents for farmland.

They supplied information based on their best judgments about typical cash rental rates for high, medium and low quality cropland in their counties, as well as for land devoted to production of hay, oat and pasture. Information about rents for individual farms was not collected.

There was considerable variability across counties in year-to-year changes, as is typical of survey data, but most Iowa counties experienced increases in average rents for land planted to corn and soybeans.

All land qualities have seen their average cash rents increase by similar percentages.

High quality land experienced an 11.2% increase, from $267 per acre in 2021 to $297 in 2022.

Medium quality land experienced a 9.4% increase, from $233 per acre in 2021 to $255 in 2022. Low quality land experienced a 10.2% increase, from $197 per acre in 2021 to $217 in 2022.

Due to reporting deadlines, survey data typically lags the current year. The typical cash rents reported in the survey reect the economic conditions during the months of July and August of the previous year through February of the current year. The survey has historically been implemented at the same time each year to avoid interfering with cash rent negotiations or re-negotiations.

Survey information can serve as a reference point for negotiating an appropriate rental rate for next year, said Plastina. However, rents for individual farms should be based on productivity, ease of farming, fertility, drainage, local price patterns, longevity of the lease, conservation practices, and possible services performed by the tenant.

“The cash rent survey results are based on opinions and should not be used to set prices without proper discussion of the relevant circumstances around an individual farm,” said Plastina.

Dairy Farmers of America nalizes CEO transition At the recent Board of Directors meeting of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), the Board completed the transition of Dennis Rodenbaugh taking the helm as president and chief executive ofcer, as Richard (Rick) P. Smith ofcially stepped down on June 30 after 16 years of service. Rodenbaugh joined DFA in 2007 and has held several leadership roles throughout the organization. Most recently, he held the title of executive vice president, council operations, and president, Ingredient Solutions.
