Robots help keep future bright for dairy

TABOR, S.D. – Bob and Nancy Pechous recently faced a dilemma.

“Our old dairy facilities were totally shot,” Bob said. “We knew that we either had to do something different or get out of the dairy business.”

They decided on something different. Now the Pechous couple, who farms together with their son, Kyle, milk their herd with four robots on their dairy near Tabor, S.D. On Sept. 27, 2016, the Pechouses moved their herd of 125 cows into their new robotic facility, a monoslope tunnel ventilated barn with room for 240 cows.

The barn is divided into two pens that each hold about 120 cows. Four Lely robot milkers are placed in a single row, with one pair of robots serving each pen.

“We lined up machinery to make an alley and chased the cows up to the new barn,” Bob said. “I was surprised when the cows went right in without any hesitation.”

“During the rst three days, we

had people here 21 hours a day to push cows through the robots,” Nancy said.

“Friends, neighbors and business people who helped build the new barn all pitched in to help.”

The freestalls in the new barn at Pechous Dairy are equipped with rubber mattresses bedded with recovered manure solids. An automatic scraper system carries manure to a trench located at one end of the barn. The manure ows to a pump that pushes the manure into a separator, which has been placed overhead. The separated manure solids fall into a collection area while the liquids are pumped to a large outdoor storage basin.

“We looked at sand bedding but decided that it would be too hard on the robots and the other equipment. We also didn’t like the extra expense of dealing with waste sand,” Kyle said.

Bob likes the comfort their bedding of choice offers.

“The recovered manure solids are as soft as feathers,” Bob said. “We had a bit of a learning curve when it came to bedding with solids. For one thing, we learned to use only fresh solids and not

After nine months in their new barn, the Pechouses are pleased with their decision.

“The amount of information we get from the robots is phenomenal,” Kyle said. “It makes it so much easier to manage the cows. We know immediately if a cow has ketosis or mastitis or is losing weight. When we moved into the new barn, we switched over to A.I. breeding.

I do almost all of the breeding based on the information collected by the robots.”

They also like how well their herd has performed because of the robots.

Their 161,000 somatic cell count is low-

er than when they were in their old facility.

Milk production has also seen an upward bump, with an average of 79 pounds of milk per cow per day. That’s nearly 10 pounds higher than when they were in their old barn. Since about twothirds of their cows are in their rst lactation, their goal is to add another 10 pounds to the herd average over the next year.

Improved herd health and increased production aren’t the only benets the Pechouses have reaped.

“The robots will pay for themselves in labor savings in about six years,” Kyle said.

“And we are spending more time managing the cows now that we don’t have to milk them.”

But it has taken many years to get to this point with a new facility. It started with Bob and Nancy growing up on neighboring dairy farms.

“I met Bob when we attended the same one-room country school together,” Nancy said. “I was in kindergarten and he was in rst grade.”

Bob and Nancy got married in 1981 and have three children.

Their daughter, Jennifer, is a teacher in Brandon. Their son Justin lives in Tabor with his wife, Josie, and their daughters Gracie, 11, and Georja, 5. Son Kyle and his wife, Erin, and

their son, Blake, 5, and daughter, Olivia, 3, live on a nearby farm. Erin works as a nurse at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall.

Shortly after they were wed, Bob and Nancy began to milk cows in a 36-cow stanchion barn. In 1986 they built a 120-cow dairy barn that included freestalls and a double-6 herringbone parlor.

“We were the rst stop on our milk truck’s route, so we had to start milking each morning at 4,” Nancy said. “Then I had to go to the house and get the kids ready for school.”

In 2004, Bob and Nancy went into the CWT dairy buyout program and sold their herd.

But they missed milking cows, so a year later they purchased a new herd and got back into the dairy business.

“When you’re going along at full speed every day, it’s hard to just stop,” Bob said.

In 2010, Kyle joined Pechous Dairy by purchasing a percentage of the operation.

“When he was a kid, Kyle was joined with me at the hip,” Bob said. “He followed me around everywhere I went.

Kyle was a freshman in high school when he rented his rst two quarters of land.”

After graduating from high school, Kyle took a diesel mechanics course at Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Neb. He then started a trucking business and had as many as four rigs on the road at a time. But his true calling was dairy farming.

“Dairy farming is all I’ve ever wanted to do,” Kyle said.

“Thirty years later, it simply wasn’t worth putting more money into,” he said.

Nancy agreed.

“We wanted to do something that would enable the next generation to continue dairy farming,” Nancy said. “That plus the constant struggle of nding good hired help caused us to decide that we needed robotic milkers.”

Once the Pechous family determined robotic milking was in their future, they set about to learn.

“We toured robotic dairies in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa,” Bob said.

“We learned that everyone has their own ideas. Everyone does things a little differently.”

Robots were the right choice for the Pechous fam-

ily who built their new facility with the future in mind.

“We designed this barn so that we can easily add on the other half and put in four more robots,” Bob said.

They want to make sure the dairy can continue.

“We didn’t do this for ourselves,” Nancy said. “We built it for our kids and, hopefully, for our grandkids.

Our hope is that they will continue our family’s tradition of dairy farming.”

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. – Despite recently receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Resource Stewardship award by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, conservation efforts at Kellercrest Holsteins are nothing new.

“It was a great honor to receive this award because it’s something we’ve been working at for 50 years,” Mark Keller said.

Keller, who farms in a partnership with his brother, Tim, said the conservation mindset has always been a part of the farming philosophy for him and his family. The Kellers milk 300 head, with 600 head total on their farm near Mount Horeb, Wis. They farm over 600 acres, about one-third of which is rented.

“The soil is very important to us, it’s our livelihood,” he said, noting that much of their farm ground is hilly, with shallow soil. “Anything that goes down the creek is money out of our pockets.”

The Kellers received the award for the efforts in preserving the Pleasant Valley Watershed, in which half their farm lies.

Farming in multiple watershed The Pleasant Valley Watershed, which is a part of the Pecatonica Watershed, is a collaboration of several organizations, including the Nature Conservancy Foundation. Keller said the group takes a respectful approach towards agriculture by acknowledging the need for agriculture and looking for ways to work with farmers to increase conservation efforts.

The other half of the Kellercrest farm lies in the Upper Sugar River Watershed. The Kellers have taken a leading role in a farmer-led conservation group to take care of that area.

“Farmer-led conservation groups are becoming increasingly popular in Wisconsin,” Keller said. “Farmers are taking the initiative in moving things forward, rather than waiting to be told what they need to do.”

Some of the things the Kellers do to help maintain the integrity of the watersheds they farm in include increased use of cover crops, the approach they take for manure application, no-till farming and contour farming practices, which they have used for over 50 years.

Practical application of conservation methods The Kellers are increasing their use of winter rye as a cover crop. They have used the forage as a cover crop for over 10 years and are working to nd new ways to implement it into the diets of their milking herd. Using information from a University of Wisconsin-Madison study, they replaced wheat straw in their lactating mix with winter rye and saw a small increase in production.

“The rye is high in ber, but it is more digestible than the wheat straw, so the nutrients are more available to the cows,” Keller said.

While their use of daily haul manure application might not be unique, it is different for a 300-cow dairy herd.

“While the manure is still liquid and applied to the top of the soil, it absorbs quicker and is dry almost immediately,” Keller said of their application method. “We don’t have to worry about rain washouts, and there is virtually no odor because it is dry so fast, and the nutrients adhere better to the soil particles.”

He said they have purchased no extra phosphorous since 2009.

“We are letting the manure be the nutrients for the soil, that saves us a lot of money,” he said.

No-till farming methods are benecial to the soil in more ways than simply avoiding runoff and erosion.

“No-till conserves water,” said Keller, sharing that no-till elds hold water better than conventionally tilled elds. “It’s not at the mercy of rainfall, which is big with our shallow soil. We had elds last fall averaging 275-plus bushels per acre. That’s hill ground, in Mount Horeb. That’s phenomenal.”

Keller encourages all farmers to experiment with conservation techniques in their farming operations, and nd what might work for them.

“You don’t need to go all in, try it on a few acres, experiment,” he said.

OSAGE, Iowa – Eric and Julia Zimmerman have taken on the daunting task of starting a dairy operation from scratch, a major undertaking in today’s agricultural environment.

Zimmerman transformed his father-in-law’s hog operation into a modern dairy setup. His milking operation started in November 2016.

The couple, born and raised in Pennsylvania, later moved to northern Iowa with their families. The couple married in August 2010. Today, they have two preschool-aged daughters and live on a farm southeast of Osage.

“I had worked for a construction company for eight-and-a-half years and carried a lunch bucket eight-and-a-half years. That gets old,” Zimmerman said. “I wanted to farm ground and you need something to go along with it.”

He said he didn’t want to raise pigs. Having grown up on a dairy farm, he settled on cows.

Zimmerman had an electrician do the wiring and a man from Osage installed the milking equipment.

Once everything was torn out, Zimmerman’s brotherin-law came over and helped him out with the rest.

“If we would have been building a new barn, we could have made it the way we wanted it, but the big challenge was changing a hog set-up into a cow set-up,” he said. “I spent a good part of a year doing drawings and guring out how I wanted it.

“Having worked in construction, helped me with making blueprints. My cousin is a welder. We went around and looked at a lot of milking parlors to get ideas and then he built me a 16-stall parlor.”

The former hog facility now houses several loafing pens for dry cows and a large free-stall area, where milking cows loaf and are fed several times a day.

Two large silos and three bulk bins were constructed last summer on the south end of the building.

The silos and bins sit together, so Zimmerman has easy access to all the ingredients for his cows’ rations.

A side room in the hog facility has been transformed into a milk room, housing the bulk tank and pipeline washer.

He obtained his herd from a friend’s cousin and local farmers with an excess of heifers.

Zimmerman raises his own silage, haylage and shelled corn, and buys his hay from South Dakota, which is much drier than local hay.

He sells his bull calves but keeps his heifer calves.

He has joined the Dairy Herd Improvement Association but said his record keeping is so new he can’t compare any of his herd’s results yet.

Zimmerman said his current operation could never have been started without the help of family, neighbors and friends.

“A young man who wants to just milk cows these days can’t just start out on their own,” he said. “You have to have family and good neighbors to help you.

My family and friends have helped us out a lot.

“My wife is also very supportive, which really helps. She helps milk two times a day, and if it wasn’t for her, I don’t know how we could operate,” Zimmerman said. He also acknowledged his gratitude for his neighbor, Lloyd, who farms across the road.

“He probably doesn’t need me, but I need him,” he said.

“I guess farming is my thing,” Zimmerman said.

“I enjoy being my own boss and calling my own shots.”

Class III futures to peak at $16.92 in November

The June Dairy Month Federal order Class III benchmark milk price was announced by USDA at $16.44 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 87 cents from May and $3.22 above June 2016. It is the highest Class III since February 2017 and equates to about $1.41 per gallon, up from $1.34 in May and $1.14 a year ago.

The half-year Class III average stands at $16.12, up from $13.48 at this time a year ago and $15.99 in 2015.

Late Friday morning Class III futures portend a July price at $15.74; August, $16.52; September, $16.65, with a peak at $16.92 in November.

The June Class IV milk price is $15.89, up $1.40 from May and $2.12 above a year ago. The mid-year average is $15.08, up from $13.18 a year ago and $13.70 in 2015.

The USDA-surveyed cheese price used in calculating the month’s Class values averaged $1.6293 per pound, up 9 cents from May. Butter averaged $2.4065, up 24.2 cents. Nonfat dry milk averaged 91.37 cents per pound, up 4.3 cents, and dry averaged 49.17 cents per pound, down 1.8 cents from May. As to what lies ahead, worldwide milk production is past its peak and won’t see another uptick until Oceania starts its season in a few months on a volume basis, according to FC Stone’s June 26 Early Morning Update (EMU). “Looking at year over year gures, global milk production was in contraction during the second half of 2016, so it is expected that in the coming months, we will be seeing positive year over year increases,” the Update states.

“Heat is a concern, especially out west which has caused over 18 wildres already this summer. In the Midwest however, temperatures have been rather optimal for milk production at the moment. The problem nationally is getting milk production into the right dairy commodity,” according to the EMU. Cash block Cheddar cheese fell to $1.51 per pound Wednesday but closed Friday and June Dairy

Month at $1.5250, down 1 1/2-cents on the week and the fth consecutive week of loss, 10 cents below a year ago, and 21 1/4-cents lower than on June 1.

The Cheddar barrels dropped to $1.35 Thursday but closed Friday at $1.3525, down 1 3/4-cents on the week, 31 3/4-cents below a year ago, 18 cents lower on the month, and a still too-high 17 1/4-cents below the blocks. Twenty three cars of block traded hands the last week of June at the CME. Extra loads of milk may not be as prevalent as they were the last few weeks, but some Midwest cheese makers report distressed milk is still available at $1 to $3 below Class, according to Dairy Market News (DMN). Manufacturers also report running full schedules, but intakes have eased back a load or two.

There is an expectation of more available loads over the Fourth of July holiday and cheese makers will have to weigh the pros and cons of taking additional milk, says DMN. Demand is mixed. Some contacts say curds and readily consumed product orders are strong, others say demand from food manufacturers and food service businesses is steady and cheese continues to move well. Other contacts think cheese orders are “lackluster.” Inventories are heavy for both blocks and barrels and “some contacts suggest the all-time high for total natural cheese stocks may represent efforts by cheese makers to nd homes for heavy milk intakes through various cheese aging programs for hard Italian cheeses, aged Cheddar, and other hard cheeses.” Storage capacity concern is pressuring cheese prices.

Western cheese inventories also continue to be long and loads with a little more age are proving harder to move, says DMN. Domestic demand is fair.

Food service requests are perhaps slightly lower, but retail demand is steady. Cheese seems to be moving well through regular contracts, but end users are not asking for a lot of extra loads. Contacts hope the price differences between U.S. and international markets can spur additional sales, but large volumes have yet to materialize. Production is active and is pushed on by plentiful milk supplies.

Butter ended the week at $2.6425 per pound, up 5 1/4-cents, 29 1/4-cents above a year ago, and up 23 1/4-cents on the month. Ten cars traded hands this week.

Butter at $3 a pound may be on the horizon. The EU price was reportedly averaging about $3.14, according to FC Stone. DMN says the status quo for butter production, in general, remains mostly active with moderate clearance, as the balance of output moves into storage. Salted butter supplies are adequate but unsalted volumes are considered tight in some channels. Manufacturers expect increased butter production as some cream plants close for the July 4 holiday.

However, the market is preparing for lower trending

milk production and butterfat declines to deter available cream. Hence, in the next few weeks, producers expect that cream will be readily absorbed into Class II ice cream, prompting reductions in churning rates, which is typical for this time of year. Some buyers note this as a cause of the premium butter price.

DMN says Western butter makers report cream is available for butter but seasonal demand is making cream supplies tighter. Some butter processors are choosing to slow their churns and sell cream to ice cream and other Class II manufacturers because of the strong milkfat prices. Butter inventory is seasonally high and manufacturers are managing stocks closely to assure they have product to meet expected high Third and Fourth Quarter demand. End users are very much aware of year-end butter needs and some suggest that end users are even seeking quotes for available butter into 2018, reports DMN. Fat in the EU remains tight, according to FC Stone’s EMU, which suspects that Oceania milk is being put into Cheese. “The US has the fat,” the EMU says, “but you can’t buy it. The US has the upper hand in this poker game, and physical traders know it. It has been a game of chicken between price and demand, with demand faltering as of late, especially in the EU,” the EMU states.

The EMU warns that “There is a certain price level where consumption will slow down. In the US we are somewhat acclimated to $2.00 plus butter. Internationally that is not the case as there has already been outrage because of increases in croissant prices.

So at what price level does consumption subside signicantly? It’s hard to say, but it probably starts with a 3,” the EMU concludes.

As to cheese, the EMU says “The US looks like a nice bargain on cheese today. With shipping costs down, maybe half of what they were ve years ago, we’re scratching our heads on why the export bid in not more pronounced.”

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 84 1/2-cents per pound, down a quarter-cent on the week but a penny above a year ago, with 10 cars sold on the week at the CME. FC Stones points out that Mexico has been “noticeably absent from the market as of late, leaving a void in US exports. Seasonally Mexico is coming into a low demand period, as schools are being let out and excess milk is making its way to the driers. However, with the US competitive cost of production advantage, Mexican buyers might see value in owning fresh product in the low 80 cent level, which should act as a major level of support for front month futures.”

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration consisting of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. In other words, one pound of milk today purchases 2.21 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The May U.S. average All-Milk price climbed to $16.70 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 20 cents from April and $2.20 above May 2016. Prices ranged from $15.00 in New Mexico to $20.10 in Florida.

California’s $15.86 was up 41 cents from April and $2.95 above a year ago and $1.54 below Wisconsin’s $17.40, which was up 30 cents from April and $2.60 above a year ago.

May corn averaged $3.45 per bushel, up 2 cents from April but 23 cents per bushel below May 2016.

Soybeans averaged $9.26 per bushel, down 6 cents from April, after dropping 37 cents in April, and is 50 cents per bushel below May 2016. Alfalfa hay averaged $155 per ton, up $7 per ton from April, which followed a $13 jump the previous month, and is $8 per ton above May 2016.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the report shows the May cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $73.30 per cwt., up $1.10 from April, but $6.30 per cwt. below May 2016, and $1.70 above the 2011 base average of $71.60.

Speaking of feed, USDA’s latest Crop Progress report shows that 55 percent of the nation’s corn crop, as of the week ending June 25, was rated in good condition, 12 percent excellent, unchanged from the previous week. Ninety four percent of the soybeans are emerged, up from 89 percent the previous week.

Fifty six percent are rated in good condition, down 1 percent from the previous week and 3 percent behind a year ago. Forty six percent of the cotton is rated “good,� down 5 percent from the previous week and even with a year ago.

As June Dairy Month appears in our rear view mirror, the dairy industry is taking another step to safeguard the milk it produces. USA regulators begin testing milk for another type of antibiotic starting July 1.

The June 23 Dairy and Food Market Analyst reports that this 18-month-long pilot program will “look for residues of tetracyclines including oxytetracycline and tetracycline. Currently, milk tanks are tested for beta-lactam drugs such as penicillin and amoxicillin.

Just like the beta-lactam testing, any milk found with tetracycline residues (of 300 or more parts per billion) will be dumped.�

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted 10 requests for export assistance this week from its members to sell 1.695 million pounds of Cheddar cheese to customers in Asia, Central America, the Middle East and Oceania. The product has been contracted for delivery through September and raises CWT’s 2017 exports to 39.953 million pounds of American-type cheeses, and 3.013 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) to 17 countries.

In other trade news; an international coalition of 10 dairy industry organizations, including three U.S. dairy groups, is “asking their governments� trade ministers to intercede in the increasingly acrimonious dispute over Canada’s harmful dairy policies that is having global repercussions,� according to a joint press release.

The groups co-signed a joint letter requesting that their respective trade ministries “pursue all avenues available to challenge these measures, including WTO dispute settlement and bilateral trade agreement relationships.�

The U.S. dairy sector, represented by the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), together with seven dairy groups from Argentina, Australia, the European Union, Mexico and New Zealand, is insisting that “Canada remove the recently implemented policies that are facilitating the dumping of Canadian dairy products in the international market, while making already prohibitive Canadian restrictions on dairy imports even more onerous.â€? “IDFA will use every opportunity to urge administration ofďƒžcials and legislators who are working to Buyers & Feeders of damaged corn, soybeans, screenings, wet, hot, dry, ďŹ re and silo corn.

NMPF president Jim Mulhern said that “Canada’s revised dairy policy amounts to a “beggar-thy-neighborâ€? approach, damaging not just its neighbor to the south, but also causing harm to other major dairy exporting countries around the world. This policy must stop now, before any more damage is done to American farmers and those from other nations seeking to compete on a level global playing ďƒželd.â€?

Tom Vilsack, president and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council, charged that “Canada has been adopting policies that run counter to our longstanding agreements and upending what has until recently been a mutually beneďƒžcial trade relationship. Our trade agreements must be honored and not ignored, or worse, by our closest neighbor.â€?

Canada implemented a special milk Class 7 pricing policy in February that “artiďƒžcially lowers milk ingredient prices for Canadian processors and is de-

signed to incentivize the substitution of domestic Canadian dairy ingredients for imported ingredients, while also pushing Canadian proteins out onto world markets at below-market prices,� the press release states.

Meanwhile a report published by the Workers Center of Central New York and the Workers Justice Center of New York called ‘Milked’ is raising eyebrows.

Bob Gray, editor of the Northeast Dairy Farmers Cooperative Newsletter, says “The report is highly critical of the treatment of Hispanic farm workers on dairy operations in New York State. It points out that the average dairy farmworker works as much as 12 hours a day, six days a week. And it claims that most farm works earn about the federal minimum wage ($7.25 per hour). It goes on to say many workers have not received adequate training and often feel isolated on the farm. Obviously, this is a very biased report which does not truly reďƒ&#x;ect working conditions on most dairy operations in the Empire State,â€? writes Gray.

It has been sweltering in California’s Central Valley, home to one of the greatest concentrations of dairy cows in the United States. The thermometer topped 100 ŵF for nine straight days in June. The heat was unusually extreme even for an area accustomed to high summer temperatures.

Cows suffered. Death loss was elevated and milk production slipped. Some dairy producers reported a 10% to 20% drop in production per cow during the hottest days. While weather in the Central Valley is still summery, it is not as scorching, and production per cow is starting to recover. Still, consequences remain.

With hundreds of heat-stricken cows to dispose of, the Baker Commodities rendering plant in Kerman, Calif., has been unable to keep up. Kings, Tulare, and Fresno counties have declared a state of emergency, which will temporarily allow dairies to bury or compost dead animals onsite rather than bring them to the overwhelmed rendering facility.

milk output in Arizona. In contrast, summer got off to a cooler- than-normal start in the Midwest, and the spring Áush is winding down slowly. But the forecast calls for heat. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects warmer-than-normal temperatures across the country for the next three months.

The Southwest, Northeast, and Florida show particularly high probabilities for warmer- than-normal weather. A summer heat wave could tighten milk supplies and slow growth in cheese-surplus states.

However, given the size of the U.S. dairy herd, a milk shortage does not seem likely.

On 1,200 acres of owned and rented land, the Traylors make hay and pasture their animals. With the landscape mimicking that from the mountain range, the land is not suitable for crop farming.

“It’s extremely rolling lands here and not tillable for much of anything. We don’t have a large enough area of at land for irrigation,” Traylor said. “If farmers have four to ve acres of tillable land, they’re very fortunate.”

Because of the inability to grow grains for feed, the Traylors purchase most of their commodities needed in the ration, including citrus pulp, dried distiller grains, corn silage, and sometimes cottonseed hulls.

Although the state was in a signicant drought last year, this year has been promising for putting up hay and aiding in the quality of the ration.

“We’ve been fortunate this year for good rains,” Traylor said. “Sometimes, we’ll go ve years where we won’t get much good rain, and then it’ll be back.”

When the weather cooperates, Taylor said dairy farming is easier, but challenges still remain in the southern state.

DELTA, Ala. – For more than seven decades, the Traylor family has dairy farmed near Delta, Ala., among the rolling hills that travel outward from the Talladega National Forest.

Today, Richie Traylor and his brother, Justin, manage their parents’, Glenn and Betty’s, 182-cow dairy, which is located 90 miles northeast of the state capital.

“My brother and I are fulltime employees for our parents,” Traylor said. “In 1964, my dad purchased the family dairy from his relatives and then I joined the farm after college in ‘82.”

Although dairy does not rank in the top 10 agricultural commodities produced in Alabama, and the state’s dairy farmers produce less than 20 percent of the population’s dairy needs, according to the Alabama Farmers Federation, the Traylors have established themselves in the industry and are thriving.

water, Tenn., where we’ve been able to receive a good price for them,” Traylor said.

In addition to operating a dairy, the Traylor family also raises 145 beef cattle and manages four broiler barns. Traylor’s daughters have a small herd of registered Red Angus.

With Alabama’s humid and hot climate in the summer, and mild winters, the Traylors house their animals in open loang barns.

Number of Wisconsin dairy herds trimmed again Scenic Central Milk Producers decides to no longer take Grade B milk

Wisconsin just lost a few more dairy herds. That’s due to the decision

by Scenic Central Milk Producers to no longer accept Grade B milk.

In May, the cooperative told 14 of its members they had until June 30 to update their farms to meet Grade A milk standards. Otherwise, they would need to nd a new buyer for their milk.

Scenic Central has no processing plants of its own, but markets the milk from approximately 300 farms in southwest and south-central Wisconsin and Illinois, according to general manager Terry Hanson from Prairie du Sac, Wis. Meister Cheese in Muscoda, Wis., told Scenic Central that as of July 1, it no longer wanted Grade B milk in its cheese vats, Hanson said. That spurred Scenic Central’s decision to start accepting only Grade A milk.

As of June 29, Hanson said half of the 14 farms would be able to convert to Grade A by the June 30 deadline.

Some of the rest decided to sell their cows and get out of dairying, Hanson said.

Other news reports pegged the number of affected farms at 16. But Hanson said a more accurate tally is 15. And one of those had its Grade A permit temporarily suspended, bringing the nal number to 14.

One farmer has found a new buyer for his Grade B milk. Philip Schwabe from Muscoda, Wis., was to have the milk from his 20 cows picked up by K&K Cheese near Cashton, Wis., starting July 1. Kevin Everhart, who owns the cheesemaking equipment

at K&K, conrmed that Schwabe’s name is on its list of milk suppliers.

The company buys much of its milk from 400 Amish farmers.

Schwabe turned 80 in May. He farms with his wife, Marilyn, and son, Jonathan, who does the actual milking.

The dairyman said his small herd is producing about 1,700 pounds of milk every other day. The 280-acre farm grows corn, oats and hay. He had been selling his milk to Scenic Central since August 2012.

A part-time employee of Schwabe obtained a list of cheese factories in southwest Wisconsin from the local library, Schwabe said. That employee telephoned some of the factories, inquiring about them accepting the farm’s Grade B milk.

One plant was willing to take the milk. Trouble was, it didn’t want to send a truck to his Grant County farm for less than a full load, Schwabe said.

Scenic Central gave the 14 farmers a list of things they would need to do to upgrade to Grade A. For Schwabe, the main item was changing the well, the dairyman said.

His well is on a hill above the barn. Gravity moves the water to the buildings.

To convert to Grade A, Schwabe said he would have to install a submersible pump at the well. Then the pump would move the water to a concrete reservoir and then to the buildings.

Schwabe said it would cost $6,000 to $8,000 to change the well.

“It was possible, but there just wasn’t time in 30 days to do that,” Schwabe said.

Asked what he thought about the proposed well conversion, Schwabe said, “It seems to me kind of dumb to put in a pressure tank when the water runs down by itself OK.” Schwabe said he will be paid less Turn to SCENIC CENTRAL | Page 17

“It’ll probably be $2 [per hundredweight] less, and maybe worse than that,” he said.

Had he not been able to nd a new milk buyer, he would have been forced to sell his cows, Schwabe said.

The Schwabe place is a century farm, meaning it has been in continuous ownership by the family for at least 100 years. Schwabe said he started milking at age 7, 73 years ago, when his father gured the lad could milk one cow by hand. Eventually, the boy was milking three, then four, cows.

He said he had hoped that Jonathan, who works on a nearby dairy farm, would take over the farm and the herd someday.

“That was the idea,” Schwabe said. “But this has kind of thrown a wrench into it.”

Schwabe said he is not angry about the Grade B situation. Instead he’s frustrated.

“I think the buyer of Meister’s cheese wants to be able to advertise – or brag – that the cheese they sell is all made from Grade A milk. I can’t really blame Scenic Central, because they’re as good a farm cooperative as I know of,” he said.

Tough decision Hanson said the decision to drop the 14 farms if they did not convert to Grade A was not an easy one to make.

“Some of them have been with us quite a long time,” he said. “That’s why we gave them every chance to – and gave it to them all along – get on Grade A.” He continued, “Almost all our plants are going to strictly Grade A milk. It got to the point where we had to do something.”

Some milk processors do not want the extra bother, equipment and recordkeeping that buying two grades of milk requires, Hanson said. And nding a new market for Grade B milk isn’t as easy as it once was, partly because many plants are operating at full capacity.

“We’re still getting so much milk from Indiana and Michigan,” Hanson said. “I’m sure that has something to do with it.”

The markets have changed, too.

“Ten or 15 years ago, it wasn’t as big a deal, because, if you were making cheese, it didn’t matter if the milk was Grade A or Grade B,” Hanson said.

“But as technology moved on, and you could start separating the protein out, and that kind of thing, that’s where it changed.”

Hanson offered the example of a cookie maker.

Its cookies might be sold nationwide, so the baker wants to use dairy ingredients derived from Grade A milk, to standardize things.

“They just want that stamp of ‘Grade A,’” he said. “If you ask the public, I don’t know if they even know there’s Grade A and Grade B milk.”

He added, “I feel bad for the family farms that are getting pushed this way. Some of those things are out of our control.”

Hanson expressed frustration over the attention Scenic Central’s Grade B decision is getting.

He said, “It’s kind of funny, because DFA (Dairy Farmers of America) dropped the majority of their Grade B farmers in this state; Foremost (Farms) dropped all theirs; Rolling Hills doesn’t take any Grade B milk, and yet we’re catching the ak for changing some of these. We’re one of the few cooperatives that has taken Grade B, and now it’s becoming a big issue.”

Hanson said he has heard a rumor that Scenic Central decided to no longer accept Grade B milk so it could make room for the milk from a 3,000cow farm. That’s not true, he said, noting that the milk from the 14 Grade B farms only amounted to roughly 10,000 pounds a day.

“Herd size, to us, isn’t an issue,” Hanson said.

“Quality is an issue. And location is an issue.”

A day in the life of the Sellner family

June 27 a long, but successful day of cutting, chopping alfalfa

SLEEPY EYE, Minn. – Although Mike and Judy Sellner’s day on Tuesday, June 27 didn’t go as planned, they were still able to accomplish what they set out to get done on their dairy.

Mike and Judy and their son-in-law, Ryan Pierson, milk 120 cows in a double-6 herringbone parlor and have 400 tillable acres south of the 3,300 town of Sleepy Eye, Minn., in Brown County.

Their goal on June 27 was to cut more second crop hay and chop a eld of alfalfa they had laid the day before. They just didn’t expect to be chopping into Wednesday morning.

“I got done what I wanted accomplished. Not in the time and when I wanted to get it accomplished, but at the same

Their biggest task Tuesday was getting haylage completed. While part-time employee Jacob Tauer milked, Judy fed calves and Mike tilled the compost barn, mixed cow feed and did some other chores. Then, Mike went right to work doing some tune-ups on the haying equipment.

The Sellners have 50 acres of alfalfa. They had more, but

65 was lost to winter kill.

Late Monday night, Mike brought the self-propelled chopper home so he could put the hay head on the next morning and make any nal adjustments to the chopper.

When Pierson, who married the Sellners’ daughter, Becca, arrived at 8 a.m., he did some feeding and then worked with Mike getting the chopper boxes ready. One needed the apron to be tightened and they all needed to be greased.

After feeding calves, Judy headed to the eld to cut an 18-acre eld of alfalfa around 10:30 a.m. During this time, Mike and Ryan nished the boxes and turned their attention to setting up the blower, raising the silo unloader, putting new doors in the silo and having a quick lunch.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Mike was off to the 28-acre hay eld that had been cut Monday afternoon to start chopping. Judy was merging three rows to-

gether. That’s when the Sellners’ plans went awry. After chopping for a couple hours the strong breeze and low humidity that existed since early in the morning was drying the hay too fast and the strong southerly breeze was taking away many of the leaves as they went from the chopper to the box on the eld that runs east and west.

By 5:30 in the afternoon, about two-thirds of the eld was harvested but Mike decided to stop chopping and wait until later in the day to see if the wind subsided and dew would come to add moisture to the haylage.

Ryan started milking at 5. He takes the night milking Monday thru Friday and thoroughly enjoys the cows and the working arrangement with his mother and father-in-law.

“I like working with the cows mostly. I grew up with it,” Ryan said. “They’ve been real nice to work for.”

Mike unloaded and then jumped on their side-byside to check on a close-up-cow that didn’t come in from the pasture. After driving through the tall grass, he found her and escorted her to the farm site.

After nishing chores, Mike traded in his dairy hat for his mechanic hat and made a quick x on the chopper camera.

“You have to be a jack of all trades. You just have to be able to do about everything,” Mike said about the varying tasks a dairy farmer does in a day.

After nishing chores and having a quick supper, the sun was setting but the Sellners were heading back to the eld. Judy went to merge the rows on the 18acre eld she had dropped earlier in the day and Mike commenced with chopping again. Although the wind remained strong, Mike decided to put a mixture of the hay cut the day before and hay cut that morning in each box to give it the moisture he wanted.

They also got an inuence of more family help when their son, Kyle, one of their four children, and son-in-law, Landons Seidel, showed up at the farm, and hauled and unloaded the boxes.

“We all work together and our kids aren’t afraid to help when we need them,” Judy said. “It’s a really good feeling to get it done and to work together as a team to get it done. We were all able to work together and get it accomplished.”

By 12:40 Wednesday morning, the elds were cleaned but Mike couldn’t quite retire for the day as he

checked on the cow he brought in from the pasture earlier in the evening. Much to his delight, the cow had the calf on her own and his busy day that started 19 hours earlier was complete. A little later that night it rained 0.5 inches. “In hindsight I could have started earlier with chopping. We cut that hay at 3 the day before and usually you chop the afternoon of the next day. We are always learning something new every day in this world of dairying. I’m always surprised,� Mike said.

A quick glimpse at the day’s checklist was complete. The chores were

done for another day, Mike and Ryan were able to get the equipment ready for the day, the two ďƒželds of hay were harvested and to top it off a healthy heifer calf was born. “It’s a lot when you think about it.

There were a lot of things that fall into place so we could get that all done,�

Judy said. “I have to be thankful every day for my husband who works hard every day Monday to Monday. We’ve been at it as a couple since 1983 and in the realm of things there is no place better to be then on the farm working with my husband.�

“I sent a text message to all of Gina’s siblings saying, ‘Yes,’ but of course they already knew because they were watching the announcement online,” she said.

In the weeks following the banquet, Gina has gracefully fallen into her newfound role.

Alongside her fellow Stearns County dairy princesses, Gina has participated in bank visits, food shelf appearances, classroom visits and ice cream socials, among other dairy promotions throughout the community.

“Growing up, I was taught to speak proudly about all we do as dairy farmers,” Gina said. “All of my sisters have all helped me prepare for the Princess Kay competition, and my brothers and dad are always willing to answer my questions.”

If there is one message Gina hopes to share with consumers as a nalist, it is the dedication farmers have for their land and animals.

“We rely on the land for feed for our cows, and, in turn, food for the human population. We have to protect our environment so the next generation can take over and continue the good work,” Gina said. “I know that topic is a large concern for consumers, and I want them to know we have the same thoughts.”

With Gina’s dedication and involvement on her family’s dairy farm, both Alvin and Bernie see it easy for their daughter to relay those important messages with the public.

good work ethic and what it takes to turn out a good product,” Bernie said.

Gina agreed.

“I’m really honored to represent so many farmers and such a strong community,” she said. “It’s exciting to share my way of life with all the consumers.”

While Gina is anticipating the arrival of the state fair, she is perhaps more excited to have a butterhead alongside her sisters’.

The Holdvogts are already planning a sweet corn feed next year, using Gina’s likeness to butter their corn. With the remaining portion, Gina hopes to donate the butter to a local food shelf or a nonprot organization.

“We’re very proud of Gina, and who would’ve thought we’d be here with three butterheads when we started our family,” Bernie said. “It makes farming exciting, and we’re happy for all of the families of nalists.”

Gina agreed.

“Even after this journey is complete, I’ll take away good memories and be able to share this experience with my sisters,” she said.

A life-changing experience Schubert’s job on a dairy turns into passion, potential future in agriculture

RICE, Minn. – Rebecca Schubert admits she didn’t know anything about the dairy industry before she started her job.

“I can understand why people might think something wrong about the dairy industry or something negative because I used to listen to those statements and think they were true,” said Schubert, who will be a sophomore at North Dakota State University.

But now, after four years working for O&S Dairy near Rice, Minn., the 18-year-old knows the truth about the industry because of her personal experience and will be telling others about it. Schubert, the daughter of Natalie and Jerome Schubert, of Rice, Minn., is one of this year’s Princess Kay of the Milky Way nalists.

“I’m just excited for this opportunity. I can’t wait to see who will become Princess Kay, and I can’t wait to meet a whole bunch of new people

and share my knowledge with others,” Schubert said.

Although her time in the industry has been short, Schubert has grasped it whole-heartedly, expanding her knowledge base and learning to love the lifestyle.

“I enjoy taking care of the animals. I think the most rewarding thing for me is seeing the calves I raised two years ago become cows we milk.

It’s cool knowing it comes full circle,” she said.

During this time, she has learned how a dairy functions.

“I had no idea what went on at a farm until I started learning and progressing in my job. I had no idea how to milk a cow. I had no idea how to take care of a calf and all the little tiny details farmers pay attention to. There’s a lot more on the farm than people think.

It’s a lot of hard, but rewarding work,” Schubert said.

This is Schubert’s rst year being a dairy princess in Benton County. Schubert decided to take on the role because she wanted to take her dairy experience a step further.

“I really like people, and I really like sharing my passion for the dairy industry with people. This was a perfect way to do it,” she said.

Since Schubert didn’t grow up on a dairy, she feels she can bring a different perspective as a dairy princess and Princess Kay nalist.

“It gives me a really unique perspective. I can help others really understand where I’m coming from because I was once in that position where I had no idea about the dairy industry,” she said.

This will come in handy when people ask about trends in the food world like glutenfree and GMOs, Schubert said.

“I would stress nutrition in dairy because there’s been a lot of concern about the health in food,” she said. “I want to help them understand how healthy dairy products actually are for them. A lot of times, I’ll tell people milk, even chocolate milk, has nine essential nutrients, and they have no idea.”

Naming all nine of those nutrients – calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B12, riboavin and niacin – is one of

her favorite facts she likes telling others about dairy. Another favorite fact is that milk only has three ingredients – milk, and added vitamin A and vitamin D. “People really like clean labels and milk denitely has a clean label,” she said.

She is also looking forward to more school visits once classes are back in session.

“I think the biggest thing is stopping some of the stereotypes about farming. A lot of kids see things from movies and books that are completely different than what it’s actually like. My thought is to bring in real life pictures or things we actually use on the farm because farming is different in the movies,” Schubert said.

As the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition draws nearer, Schubert is excited for the opportunity to compete for the crown and would be excited to share her main message.

“It all goes back to trying to beat those stereotypes of farms and trying to show people that farmers really strive for excellence, because there’s a lot of misinformation out there,” she said.

Regardless of if she is chosen as Princess Kay or not, she is looking forward to having her head carved in 90 pounds of butter.

“When I was younger, we always stopped to watch them get their heads carved in butter at the state fair, but I didn’t know much about it. I never thought it could be me, but I always thought it was cool,” Schubert said.

Now that she will have a butterhead of her own, Schubert is making plans.

“We’ve already started cleaning out our freezer,” Schubert said.

No matter what her title will be, Schubert is enjoying her time sharing her dairy knowledge with others and hopes to continue to do so even after she no longer wears a crown.

“Before I started working [on a dairy farm] I wanted to go into a medical profession like nursing or something along those lines,” said Schubert, who wants to work for an ag business. “I’ve done a complete 180 and have found something I enjoy a lot more.”

Warren hopes to help bridge consumers, dairy farmers

LITCHFIELD, Minn. – Ashley Warren remembers exactly when her journey to become a Princess Kay nalist began. It was 10 years ago, when Ashley was just 9 years old and she watched her sister, Jill, on stage during the Princess Kay coronation.

“When she was named a nalist, I didn’t know what that was at the time,” Warren said. “But I remember going to the coronation and seeing her and the 11 other girls up there, that’s when I knew I wanted to be up there, too.”

Warren, 19, is one of 12 Princess Kay of the Milky Way nalists who will be competing in August for the title of the 64th Princess Kay of the Milky Way. Warren is a student at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, majoring in agriculture communication and marketing. She hopes to nd a career where she can work with both consumers and farmers and foster that connection.

This summer, she is doing an internship with the Kandiyohi County 4-H Extension ofce. When she is not working there, Warren can be found at her family’s dairy farm, R-L Acres near Litcheld, Minn.

The Warrens milk 140 cows and run 700 acres of land raising corn, alfalfa and oats. The farm is run in partnership with Warren’s parents, John and Carol, and John’s brother, Mike and his wife, Cindy.

“I remember following my dad around everywhere,” Ashley said. “I got so excited to do whatever he did.”

For Warren, going from riding in the tractor with her dad to nally being big enough to help with chores couldn’t happen fast enough.

“I remember getting excited to nally get to milk the cows,” Warren said.

Today, milking cows is still Warren’s favorite job on the farm.

Both John and Carol are proud of the work ethic and dedication to get a job done that Ashley retained from being raised on the farm.

“That’s how it was with all of our kids – Jill and Tyler too,” Carol said. “It gives them a sense of responsibility. It’s a different way of life when you grow up in the country.”

Warren was not always working hard on the farm. She took time to be involved in high school activities and participated in FFA and 4-H. This year will be her last showing cattle for 4-H. In college, Warren is involved in Ag Education Club and Gopher Dairy Club.

This is Warren’s second year as part of the Meeker County Dairy Princess program. Last year, she participated in the Dairy Princess Training weekend in May and completed practice judging. This year was her rst competing for the Princess Kay title.

“We always knew she would run, be-

cause after Jill had her butterhead, Ashley wanted to try, too,” Carol said.

Knowing how much the competition meant to her, John and Carol reassured Ashley, no matter the outcome.

“Before that weekend, I told her just be yourself,” Carol said. “We are proud of her whether she made it or not. She is still representing the dairy industry.”

Even when her name was called during the banquet, announcing the nal 12 candidates, Ashley said it took awhile for it to sink in.

“Then I looked at my family and they were all smiles. I just cried,” Ashley said.

Now that she is a nalist, Ashley is beginning to realize the magnitude of what she has accomplished.

“It is such an honor,” Ashley said. “Out of the 70 girls, I was lucky enough to be one of the top 12. It just shows that all my hard work has paid off.”

This summer, Ashley will continue her dairy ambassador duties as Meeker County Dairy Princess. She has made appearances at the First District Cheese Store to serve cheese samples, nursing homes to serve root beer oats, parades and radio broadcasts. As a Princess Kay nalist, Ashley has upcoming obligations in July.

“I’m looking forward to spending time with the other candidates and getting to know them better,” Ashley said.

By the time the coronation comes in August, Ashley will be going through the same steps Jill experienced 10 years ago.

“It’s pretty neat,” Ashley said. “And the fact that it’s the 10 year mark is a neat milestone.”

The sisters already agreed, the rst order of business after Ashley has her likeness carved in the 90-pound block of butter, will be to take side-by-side photos. Jill’s butterhead still resides safely stowed away in John and Carol’s deep freezer.

John and Carol both feel Ashley would do well as Princess Kay if she is chosen.

“Ashley has a bubbly, outgoing personality, she is very good with people and speaking in front of people,” Carol said.

“Her knowledge about the dairy industry and her work ethic are all qualities that would help her as Princess Kay.” Through her journey, John and Carol will keep reminding Ashley how proud they are of her representing the industry.

“It’s just like at the state fair when she’s showing one of her heifers or cows in 4-H show. I tell her whatever happens, you’re just lucky enough to be here,” John said.

A passion to share

Zuidema tells family’s story in nalist role

BLOMKEST, Minn. – Whenever Jessaca Zuidema has the chance to tell her family’s story of dairy farming, she eagerly takes it. So it comes as no surprise that since being named a nalist for Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Zuidema has savored the many opportunities presented.

“I’m glad to have lived on a dairy farm my whole life, and want to share our story of working day in and day out,” Zuidema said. “It’s a good life.”

Zuidema works alongside her parents – Jan and Jolene – and three brothers, Dalen, Nathan and Jakob – on their 60-cow registered Holstein dairy near Blomkest, Minn., in Kandiyohi County.

Throughout her time in youth organizations, like 4-H and FFA, Zuidema developed a passion for the dairy industry; and as a recent graduate of MACCRAY High School, Zuidema is eager to continue developing her interests and share that with others as she attends South Dakota State University in the fall, pursuing a degree in the medical eld.

Currently, Zuidema balances her time as a certied nursing assistant, working at an assisted living center, and doing chores at the dairy.

“I work overnights so that I’m at the farm during the day when I need to be,” said Zuidema, who is in charge of feeding the youngstock and milking herd and keeping the barn clean.

Between Zuidema and her brothers, they rotate milking the cows and a small herd of dairy goats, whose milk is then used for the calves.

“The long hours and hard work on the farm have made me a better person … you’re taking care of a living being,” Zuidema said. “Because of that, I’ve instilled a strong work ethic and gained a greater understanding for my responsibilities on the farm, knowing that I’m held

accountable for the animals and their well being.”

That mentality guided Zuidema to run for county dairy princess and now compete for the opportunity to become the state’s ofcial goodwill dairy ambassador.

On May 21, Zuidema was named the 10th nalist.

“With nine girls already up on stage, the chances were getting pretty slim that I’d make it. I thought maybe this wasn’t my year,” Zuidema said. “But, once the announcer mentioned my college and the goats, I teared up – I knew it was me. I didn’t realize how badly I wanted it until then.”

Throughout June, Zuidema attended several local events, promoting dairy consumption as part of a well-balanced, active lifestyle, and is looking forward to many more appearances as summer continues.

Not only has Zuidema been given the opportunity to share dairy’s importance in a diet, but also educate consumers about her family’s chosen career. When Zuidema thinks about her role as a nalist for Princess Kay and the community she represents, her brothers and father immediately come to mind.

“I have so much respect for dairy farmers and what my family does. After a long day of chopping hay, you know it’s not easy, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Zuidema said.

In preparation for the competition in August, Zuidema will brush up on the key talking points provided through Midwest Dairy Association – focusing on messages directed toward consumers – and also reviewing common public misconceptions of the industry.

“I want to know what information is out there and learn how to combat that,” Zuidema said.

As Zuidema embarks on this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity, she is grateful for all that dairy farming has provided her, alongside the continued guidance from her family and county.

“My family has been super supportive and encouraged me to do this,” Zuidema said.

Zuidema’s mother agreed.

“We couldn’t be more proud seeing Jessaca grow and blossom into this role.

She has condence and assurance in herself, and it’s fun to see her do well.”

Taking agvocacy seriously Hidden Acres Dairy sees rise in school tours

EXELAND, Wis. – Mike Robers knows how crucial it is to take care of the 250 cows that call the Robers family farm home.

“If we don’t take care of them, they don’t take care of us,” Robers said.

That sentiment is echoed multiple times throughout the group tours Robers, his wife, Elaine, and son, Dan, give to local schools during the year on their dairy farm near Exeland, Wis. In fact, they’ve given more tours this year than any other to schools and local farm organizations.

“We used to just do one tour a year for the elementary school in Winter, Wis., and so far this year we’ve done three,” Robers said. “We

did tours with kindergarten, rst and second grades, but switched to fourth and fth grades because those are the years when they study Wisconsin’s history. Middle school students have been coming, also.”

Things changed when Robers caught wind of a cost-sharing program to install milk machines in schools, and he visited neighboring school districts to let them know about it.

“I talked to Larry Villiard, principal at the Bruce School District where Dan’s kids go to school, and he was interested in sending a class up here.

Then Jenna Behrends, who teaches the Exploring Agriculture summer school class in Bruce, arranged a tour with her class,” Robers said.

Behrends arranged the trip for June 29, the last day of summer school, with six of her students.

First, Robers took the class to the machine shed to explain crop production basics on the farm, as well as how some of the machines worked.

“We use the discbine to cut hay into neat rows called windrows,” Robers said. “Then, we use a merger

The Robers’ 700 acres are mostly devoted to corn, with about 500 acres.

Hay ground makes up another 150, with the remaining 50 going toward oats and sometimes winter rye.

After stopping at the machine shed, Robers led the class to the freestall barn, built in 2010 when Dan joined the farm full-time.

“We moved up here from southern Wisconsin in 1981, and I milked 45 cows in the old barn for a while,” Robers said. “The day we moved the cows to the new barn, they didn’t want to get out of the sand. Then, they ate and ate because they hadn’t moved from their stalls all day.”

recent milk test, has reached 34,000 pounds a year.

“We’re irting with a 120-pound bulk tank average right now,” Robers said.

Cows are milked three times a day at 5 a.m., 1 p.m., and 9 p.m. in a double-6 herringbone parlor, with each shift taking about six hours. Robers brought the kids to an observation room overlooking the parlor, where they watched morning milking wrap up through the window.

“It takes about seven minutes to milk each cow,” Robers said. “When she’s waiting to go into the parlor, she’s in the holding area for about 45 minutes. We don’t like to have them waiting too long because cows make more milk when they’re laying down.”

After looking at the parlor, Robers brought the students to the milkhouse and explained how a plate cooler worked to cool the milk faster, as well as the bulk tank keeping it cold until the milk hauler arrived.

“Once milk gets above 40 degrees, it starts to want to go sour,” Robers said about the importance of keeping milk cool.

Robers’ ease and patience with the students did not go unnoticed.

“You can tell Mike knows how to talk to kids and that he’s done this before,” Behrends said. “It’s pretty clear when someone doesn’t know how to talk to children.”

The heifer shed and calf hutches were a smash hit with the students, also.

“Kids who don’t come from farms are almost always impressed with the calves. It’s so much fun letting them suck on their ngers,” Robers said.

Next, Robers led the class to the feed pile per Behrends’s request because they hadn’t seen a feed pile before. He took the time to explain how the pile was made.

“As soon as the rst load of corn silage hits the concrete, my son and I drive half a mile per hour over the pile all day until 9 p.m. to squeeze all the air out of the feed so it ferments,” Robers said.

“Then, the next day, we do it all over again until the chopper is done.”

With a visit to the manure lagoon and the manure pump room, Robers explained how they knife the manure into the soil to use the most nitrogen.

The students ended their tour in the back yard with milk, ice cream and string cheese.

“Did you guys have fun?” Behrends said.

The answer was a resounding yes.

“Ninety to 95 percent of kids have never been to a farm,” Robers said. “Kids need to know where their food comes from, and not from the grocery store.”

Our oats and barley mix on our new seeding alfalfa is starting to head out.

We have gotten a fair amount – ďŹ ve inches – of rain in the last two weeks. We had been dry for about 12 days before getting all the rain so it helped the crops. Thankfully, we did not get any severe RAINFALL storms here, but not too TOTALS farm away the storms were Last 2 bad. The corn planted early Weeks is about six feet tall while the corn that was planted later is about 4.5 to 5 feet tall. It is shaded over and looks really good. The soybeans 5â€? are close to canopy stage.

For alfalfa, we are about two-thirds done with second crop. We keep dodging Since April 1 rain. Everyone seems to be 14� working on second crop right now. A stress test for your elds Tissue sampling gives insight into crop nutrition needs

MENOMONIE, Wis. – With abundant rains falling across the Upper Midwest, many farmers have faced the challenge of not only having to cram eld work between storms, but having those crops become moisture stressed once they emerge from the soil.

“There are quite a few areas of drowned or missing spots,” said agronomist Haily Henderson. “[For silage corn], if you were planning on having 25 tons per acre with 100 acres, ve to 10 of those acres are gone due to ooding.”

Henderson, who works in western Wisconsin, recommends growers take tissue samples on crops growing in their elds to gauge what their crops need from a nutrition perspective.

“One thing we suggest is taking a tissue sample of both your normal and abnormal elds so we can compare good and bad-appearing plants to each other.

There has been extensive research on

the proper concentrations of each nutrient that crops are to contain to continue through the growing season for optimum growth,” Henderson said.

Tissue sample results tell growers and agronomists what the plant could be lacking in, whether it is a current deciency or something that could affect further plant development in the future.

“Based off the results, we can create fertilizer recommendations,” Henderson said.

Some telltale signs of stress in corn are a pale green and wilted plant, or the leaves may be striped from collar to tip.

Striping usually indicates sulfur, zinc or magnesium deciencies, while purple plants indicate a phosphorus shortage and ring or drying along the tips and edges point toward a need for potassium.

“We’ve been seeing a lot of sulfur and nitrogen deciencies due to the rain,” Henderson said. “A common prescription is nitrogen in urea form, with a little ammonium sulfate.”

In order to take a tissue sample, plant size needs to be taken into account,

particularly with corn. With plants under 12 inches, about 20 whole plants over a 10-acre spread are recommended.

If the plant is greater than a foot tall but has a ways to go before tasseling, Henderson looks for the most fully developed leaf, which is usually located at the uppermost and newest collar of the plant. For a full sample with leaves, about 15 BRITTANY OLSON/DAIRY STAR to 20 leaves are needed.

Regarding soybeans, the uppermost fully developed trifoliate, or three-leaf cluster, is taken for a sample.

“It can be a tedious job, and denitely takes the longest to nd and then collect these fully developed leaves,” Henderson said.

For alfalfa, the top six inches of a stand are harvested for sampling.

“It works really well to measure from the top of your thumb and making a mark on your wrist that measures six inches, that way you can line the top on the alfalfa plant with the mark on your arm and then cut near your thumb,” Henderson said.

Then, after the sample bag is lled and closed, growers write their name, vegetative stage of the plant and the cooperative or agronomist they’re working with on the bag before sending it to a lab for testing.

Labs in western Wisconsin include a drop-off location in Menomonie, Wis., for AgSource Laboratories in Bonduel, Wis. and Dairyland Laboratories in Arcadia, Wis. In addition to untimely rains wreaking havoc, a blast of heat in early June created another set of problems for some growers, followed by cooler temperatures. Now, many are concerned about this year’s feed quality because of a poor start to the growing season.

“Farmers had planted corn and soybeans, then the soil crusted, trapping the seedlings underground, right when the Wisconsin temps got hot,” Henderson said. “This created conditions that were perfect to rot the seeds underground which could not emerge. Some of these conditions made for some replanting.”

Henderson estimates that about ve percent of farmers have had to replant this year, but that number could be greater because elds can’t be planted when they’re underwater.

“There are spots that have been hit hard, and some have been hit multiple times, the Somerset area [in St. Croix County] being one of them,” Henderson said.

Henderson said she has also been seeing weeds, ruts and plants that are pale and stunted, also noting that farmers are behind on growing degree units due to cooler weather. She advised farmers to be aware of their feed inventories going into the heart of the 2017 growing season.

“Corn silage should be good, but hay isn’t looking like it will produce much,” Henderson said. “Second crop of alfalfa will better determine what is out there and whether new stands will need to be established for the 2018 growing season.

And, as far as soybeans go, harvest will be based off frost date.”

Agronomists are still behind, focusing on weed control and nitrogen applications, so Henderson cautioned that it may be a while before they can focus their priorities on scouting.

“The timing of hay cutting is off.

Manure pits are full of the added rainfall and await conditions to spread on hay elds, and some may still be awaiting herbicide or fertilizer applications,” Henderson said.

Has a point been reached where it is too late to save this year’s corn or bean crop because of moisture stress? Per Henderson, no – if growers keep a couple of things in mind, tissue sampling included.

“Plants are amazing and agriculture crop genetics have made surprising yields during drought years. The resiliently bred corn and soybeans may surprise us ghting their way through the cool, wet Midwest weather yet,” Henderson said. “Farmers will still be able to make quality feed this year, and we always have options for a plan B.”

Quite often in visiting farms and eld day events, I come home with things to chew on for a while – thinking about how something works, or doesn’t or how it might t with individual farms.

At the Small Grain Tour near Marty in Stearns County on June 27, U of M small grain specialist Jochum Wiersma shared that rye is being used in some hog rations because it reduces restlessness and ghting. Rye digests more evenly and doesn’t result in wider swings in blood sugar levels like some other carbohydrates – like corn maybe. Parents and teachers often comment on sugar swings with children – maybe in adult diets too.

By Dan Martens hybrid rye varieties that can yield 120 U of M Extension to 140 bushels per acre with good growing conditions. Lodging can be an issue. Currently seed is quite expensive compared to ordinary rye varieties. Rymin is still a good durable variety with yield potential up to 80 bushels per acre. Grain yield doesn’t matter so much for cover crop purposes.

Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye, with varieties that can be fall or spring seeded. Most common triticale varieties were developed in California and are more susceptible to winter injury than rye. There are some European varieties that are very similar to rye in terms of winter hardiness. I’d guess that seed would be more expensive; and triticale seed is generally more expensive than rye.

At the Soil Health Field Day in Morris on June 28, Dave Franzen and Abby Wick, from NDSU talk about when to terminate a rye cover crop related to planting corn or soybeans in the spring.

We looked at a plot of rye planted last fall. This spring, corn was planted at the same time in strips where the rye was killed three different times. The best looking corn was where the rye had been killed two weeks prior to planting the corn.

On a second plot the rye was killed the same day the corn was planted. This corn was notably shorter. On the third plot, rye was killed after the corn was up. This corn was shorter yet.

This brings discussion about whether this is due to water used by the rye, nutrients used by the rye, or the allelopathic effect of rye – meaning compounds from rye that limit the growth of some other plants. It could be all three. Dave shared information from other trials that seemed to indicate that there can be an allelopathic effect from rye to corn. Killing the rye ahead of planting corn reduces the risk.

Dave wasn’t sure that two weeks earlier was enough. He recommended not planting corn into a living rye crop. He’d consider not using winter rye as a cover crop at all ahead of corn. I wonder if this varies with different soil types and moisture and temperature conditions.

He said winter wheat would have less allelopathic effect on corn, but would recommend terminating winter wheat, maybe two weeks ahead of planting. Some people have decided to use oats for a fall cover, even though it isn’t growing again in the spring.

Franzen also said that this was not an issue with soybeans. He would not have a problem planting soybeans into a standing crop of rye. He would have a concern about letting rye stand longer in the spring, if it looked like it would be a dry spring; where limited soil moisture might be a problem for germination and/or for young soybean plants.

It is useful to watch for lessons in your elds this summer.

Red, white and blue With the Fourth of July being in the middle of the week, we can celebrate the holiday before and after to t with our weekends. I don’t know anything more red, white and blue than strawberry shortcake and blueberry pie. These are two of my favorites I’ve been baking up in the kitchen recently.

I just discovered the Fluffy Shortcake recipe in my Joy of Cooking cookbook this past week. I generally make a double batch and I still don’t have any leftovers. The family even noticed the difference. I’m also sharing a few neat tricks I’ve learned about making blueberry pies that don’t run. It takes a bit longer to make, but worth the extra effort. Of course you can still use a good canned lling if you’re short on time.

I always try to have an extra cherry and blueberry lling in my cupboards for emergencies. As long as it is made with love, it always tastes good. Enjoy.

Fluffy Shortcake from Joy of Cooking cookbook 1 3/4 cup sifted our 1/2 tsp. salt 3 tsp. baking powder 4-6 Tbsp. chilled butter 3/4 cup milk Pre heat oven to 450 degrees. Sift dry ingredients together. Cut butter in to dry ingredients until consistency of coarse cornmeal. Make a well in the center. Add milk all at once. Stir gently until milk is slightly worked in then stir vigorously until dough is free from the edges of the bowl. About 30 seconds.

Turn dough onto a lightly oured surface. Knead gently and quickly making about 8 to 10 folds. Roll with a lightly oured rolling pin or lightly press out to desired thickness. About 3/4 to 1” thick. Cut with biscuit cutter or upside down glass dipped in our.

Do not twist the cutter. The twist prevents the edges from rising. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until lightly browned, 12 to 15 minutes.

Cool slightly. Split open and top with butter and strawberries. Replace top and add more berries. Top with whipped cream, fresh milk or cream.

Two ladies who were known for their pies had shared their recipes. They called for eggs and extra instruction steps. I tried them and failed. Finally I found Vera’s very simple recipe. It seems strange to use vinegar and milk but it makes the pie so aky. She used all Crisco but I tweaked it a bit to use half Crisco and half butter for more avor. It has become my signature dish. Now just remember, just because it works for me doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for everyone, but it might become your favorite pie crust recipe too.

2 tsp. lemon zest 2 tsp. lemon juice 3/4 cup sugar 2 Tbsp. quick cooking tapioca Pinch of salt 2 Tbsp. butter 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tsp. water Pie dough for 2 crusts Place 3 cups berries in saucepan over medium heat. Mash berries to release juice. Cook, stirring frequently and mashing occasionally until about half of berries are broken down, thickened and reduced to 1 1/2 cups, takes about 8 minutes. Cool.

Place grated apple in clean towel.

Wring dry. Transfer to bowl. Add cooked berries and remaining whole berries, lemon zest, juice, sugar, tapioca and salt. Toss to combine. Transfer to pie shell. Top with butter chunks.

Top pie with crust. Seal. Brush top of pie shell with egg mixture. Sprinkle extra sugar on top. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Reduce to 350 degrees and bake an additional 30-40 minutes. Cool at least four hours before serving to allow lling to set up.

Pie crusts can be tricky to make, but not impossible. My mom makes the best pies but I can’t make her pie dough right. Mine always sticks to something or is too overworked and tough. I was looking through my

Pie Crust from Vera White Stronghurst, Ill. Makes 1 double crusted pie 1/3 cup cold milk 1 tsp. vinegar 2 cups our, sifted 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar 1/2 cup Crisco 1/2 cup cold hard butter Add vinegar to milk and keep cold in refrigerator. Mix our, salt and sugar together. Cut in Crisco and butter until size of small pebbles. Try not to over work. Add milk mixture and stir together with a fork until worked in.

Form two balls of dough.

I usually roll out the dough between two layers of wax paper sprinkled with extra our so as not to stick to the paper. Once rolled, remove top layer of wax paper and ip dough into pie pan.

Secure and lightly press dough into pan as you remove the second layer of wax paper. Fill pie with lling. Roll out second ball of dough to top. Crimp edges together. Cut a few fancy curves

in the top so the steam can escape and the lling can thicken up.

If you need to make a baked pie shell for lemon meringue pie I have found a few tricks that help to keep the pie shell in place. Roll out dough and place in pie pan with excess dough hanging over the edge of the pan.

Lightly press in place. Roll the excess dough under and ute edges. Place in freezer for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pull pie pan from freezer. Place a sheet of parchment paper over pie shell with extra hanging over.

Place around 2 cups of dried beans on top of paper to hold the pie shell in place while it bakes. I had a problem of the pie shell pulling away from the edges and shrinking while it baked until I tried this trick. It is called “blind baking.” Place pie shell in preheated oven. Bake 20 minutes. Remove from oven. Remove paper and beans. Return pie shell to oven for 10 minutes to brown up the edges. Cool before lling. Once the beans have cooled, I store them and the paper in a gallon Ziploc bag ready to use for the next pie. If you don’t have dried beans on hand, rice works really well too. Just make sure to mark the bag so no one uses the rice to eat in another dish. It didn’t kill us but sure was a big laugh at the table that night.

Crush 36 Oreos until fine crumbs. Transfer the Oreo crumbs to a large bowl.

Stir in melted butter and use a fork to incorporate the butter in with the cookie crumbs. When mixed, transfer the mixture to a 9- by 13-inch baking dish and press into bottom of the pan. Place the pan in the refrigerator while you work on the additional layers. Mix the cream cheese with a mixture until light and fluffy. Add 2 Tbsp. milk, and the sugar and mix well. Stir in 1 1/4 cups Cool Whip. Spread this mixture over the crumbs. In a bowl, combine chocolate instant pudding with 3 1/4 cups cold milk and mix until pudding starts to thicken. Spread pudding over the cream cheese layer. Spread the remaining Cool Whip over the top and sprinkle mini chocolate chips over the top. Place in refrigerator for four hours or in the freezer for one hour before serving.

Mooncake Crust: 1/2 cup butter 1 cup water 1 cup flour 4 eggs

Crust: Bring water and butter to a boil. Add all flour. Mix well. Let it cool. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each egg. Spread in a 10x14 pan. Bake at 450 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Should appear crater like.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Stir together 2 tablespoons flour, salt, 3/4 cup sugar and nutmeg in bowl. Combine egg, sour cream and vanilla in another bowl; mix well. Add egg mixture to dry ingredients; mix well. Stir in apples and spoon mixture into unbaked pie shell. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees F and bake 30 minutes more. Remove pie from oven.

Increase temperature to 400 degree F. Prepare cinnamon topping and sprinkle over pie. Return to oven and bake 10 minutes more. Cool on rack.

To make cinnamon topping: Combine 1/3 cup sugar, 1/3 cup flour and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon in bowl. Cut in 2 tablespoons butter until crumbly, using a pastry blender.
