Full-time farmer, part-time hauler

Schumacher ts truck driving in with dairying career

HOUSTON, Minn. – Shane Schumacher had to make a choice – cut down to parttime either as a dairy farmer or a truck driver.

“I was always told if you’re a full-time trucker, you’ll be a part-time dairy farmer and vice versa,” Schumacher said. “You can’t do both full-time and do a decent job at either one.”

Schumacher learned that to be true for him. He chose full-time farming with a few part-time gigs on the side. Now, the 26-year-old is farming together with his dad, Paul, on their 55-cow dairy near Houston, Minn. To supplement his income, Schumacher also hauls milk two weekends a month and has a seed corn business. In addition to their dairy herd, the Schumachers also raise a herd of 30 beef cows.

Hauling milk as a side gig is a natural t for Schumacher, who has always loved the career. Being a truck driver has been on his mind as far back as kindergarten when he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up.

“It has got to be the

chrome,” Schumacher said about what draws him to it.

“Dairy farming wasn’t even on my radar when I was younger.”

In middle school, Schumacher job shadowed a truck driver for a day.

“I loved it,” he said. “I was in shock and awe. The sooner I could get behind the wheel the better.”

He still had that mentality during his senior year of high school.

“I took my driver’s test before I graduated,” Schumacher said. “I had to take a day off of school for that. I had to go get a real education.”

Driving truck took over his time after he graduated from high school. Then in August 2012, Schumacher started on a milk hauling route.

“It’s always something I’ve wanted to do,” he said about achieving his dream.

Although dairying had not been his plan, he could not deny the pull back to the farm.

“It was the perfect storm of events,” Schumacher said about why he decided to delve further into his dairy career.

“It got to be where things were falling behind,” Schumacher said.

One example was wondering why a cow had not shown

heat for over 100 days. After a check with the vet, the cow was conrmed pregnant.

“I had no recollection of breeding her,” Schumacher said. “I was not paying attention to what I was doing here.”

He knew he needed to devote more time to the cows.

He also had a wake up call from a dairy industry representative whom Schumacher trusted. “We were going through the DHIA paper work,�

Schumacher said. “He grabbed me by the shoulders, shook me and said, ‘Your herd is falling behind to the point where if it falls behind any more you’re never going to recover.’ It was on a verge of falling apart.�

At the time, the pregnancy rate average for the herd

barely passed 20 percent and the rolling herd average hovered around the 14,000-pound mark. Since his return, Schumacher has helped increase the pregnancy rate to over 30 percent and production has surpassed 20,000 pounds. “Progress is slowing, but you can’t afford to push the cows now with the quota and the market,� Schumacher said, referencing the low dairy price and the production limitations imposed on his farm by his milk

Schumacher admits he has the easiest load amongst all his counterparts within the company, but it works and his schedule is ďƒ&#x;exible. “That’s part of why I keep going back,â€? he said. “They’re willing to work with me.â€?

It also helps supplement his farm income. “There are a lot of guys who run harder than I do,�

Schumacher said. “I have a lot of respect for people who are full-time farmers and work another full-time job. I tried that and it didn’t work for me.�

Schumacher is glad that even though he chose dairy farming for his full-time career, truck driving still ďƒžts into his life.

The award that keeps giving Bremer donates $1,000 to non-prot after being named regional winner in contest

HASTINGS, Minn. – When Janet Bremer was named one of 10 regional winners in the America’s Farmers Mom of the Year contest, her prize consisted of a gift package instead of an award.

“I appreciate that they didn’t give me a trophy or a plaque to hang in my house.

They actually gave me stuff I could potentially be using out and amongst other people to get a conversation started [about dairy and agriculture],” said Bremer, who milks 130 cows with her family – husband, John, and adult children, Sara and Mike – on their dairy near Hastings, Minn.

A more important part of the gift Bremer received was $1,000 to donate to the non-prot organization of her choice.

Bremer chose Hastings Family Service.

“My family and I have always been really supportive of their efforts,” Bremer said. “They do a really good job of working with the community and providing support for families in need.”

All four members of the Bremer family are certied drivers for the Meals on Wheels program coordinated by Hastings Family Service. It has been a program Bremer has been helping for over 35 years.

In the fall, the Bremers donate school supplies to the organization to help families in need, and they organize a food drive for the

“It just seemed natural to continue our efforts towards them,” Bremer said.

Bremer requested the prize money be used towards purchasing vouchers for milk and dairy products.

“I trust them and would have been ne with them using it for anything, but I thought as long as this award was given because I am a farmer, why not support my own product,” Bremer said.

Bremer also made this request because of a fact she learned nearly 1.5 years ago from the Great American Milk Drive: on average, people served by food banks receive the equivalent of less than one gallon [of milk] per person per year.

“That’s eye opening,” Bremer said.

“It’s also what got us motivated to do the Great American Milk Drive [donation] collection when we do our Santa on the Farm.”

Bremer said keeping milk and other products cool is one of the biggest reasons for lack of dairy in food shelves.

“We’re lucky because someone purchased coolers for our food shelf,” she said.

“But a lot of them are just in the basement of a church or somewhere where they don’t have refrigeration.”

As a mom of the year regional winner, Bremer’s application was judged on her farm, family, community and agriculture industry involvement.

Along with her time spent with Hastings Family Service, Bremer is also on the nance committee of her church, treasurer

of her township and speaks at community events.

Another part of her life is promoting dairy and the day-to-day task that goes along with owning and operating a farm with her family.

“I rarely turn down opportunities to promote dairy,” Bremer said.

Throughout the year, the Bremers host farm tours and take part in speaking engagements at the library and schools. They also donate yogurt to summer camps, and host milk and cookies for people at their church.

“People out of the blue don’t just come up and ask you questions about farming,” Bremer said. “Sometimes they need a little prompt to get them started.”

She also has the opportunity to promote the industry in her position as the Minnesota Dairy Princess Coordinator through Midwest Dairy Association.

“I really enjoy meeting people,” Bremer said about one of her favorite parts of promoting dairy.

But there is more to it than the personal satisfaction of making new friends.

“I like that I have the ability to speak from the heart about something I care about and to hopefully have a conversation with people,” she said. “There is so much misinformation out there. I want to be the information.”

And thanks to winning the mom of the year contest, Bremer has been able to promote and give back to the community all at the same time.

“We have had the freestalls in for about 2 months. We installed them ourselves, they were simple to install. Cows likes the flexibility that the stall has. Should have a long life span.”

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Is canola meal a good t for your farm?

There can be benets to using this by-product feed as a source of protein for lactating dairy cows, according to Kenneth Kalscheur, with the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center, Madison, Wis. He spoke during the Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference June 13-14, in Dubuque, Iowa.

“While changes in the market dictate when canola meal, soybean meal or another protein source can be favorably incorporated into dairy cow diets, there are potential benets to using canola meal in the diets of lactating dairy cows,” Kalscheur said. “Mid-lactation dairy cows have similar or slightly greater performance when canola meal is included in their diets.”

In addition, Kalscheur said there appears to be potential for including canola meal in the diets of early lactation dairy cows.

He said canola meal is a proven protein source that can be formulated into a wide range of rations for cows in milk.

Feeding studies have compared the performance of cows eating canola meal to those that had soybean meal in their rations. An analysis of 122 studies found cows getting canola meal ate more dry matter and produced more milk.

Another examination of other feeding studies looked at what happened when canola meal was replaced with other sources of vegetable protein such as soybean meal, corn gluten meal, cottonseed meal and distiller’s grains.

“Milk yield, 4 percent fat-corrected milk, milk protein and dry matter intake increased as canola meal replaced all the other protein sources,” Kalscheur said. “When comparing canola meal directly to soybean meal, milk protein increased but fat-corrected milk was not different.”

Another group of studies found essential amino acids were higher when cows were fed canola meal, Kalscheur said. And, milk urea nitrogen (MUN) was lower.

A study in 2015 found that replacing soybean meal with canola meal boosted dry matter intake by 0.88 pound per day. Milk production rose by 1.98 pounds per day and milk protein rose by 0.66 pound a day, Kalscheur said.

“In addition, MUN and urinary nitrogen excretion were lower for cows fed canola meal compared to cows fed soybean meal,” he said. “In this study, the crude protein concentration did not affect dry matter intake, milk yield or true protein yield.”

Studies involving distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) yielded similar results: less MUN in the milk, more dry matter eaten, more milk per cow and more protein in the milk.

Experiments have been conducted to see how forages affect cow performance when they are eating canola meal. In one experiment, forage that was 70 percent corn silage and 30 percent alfalfa was included in the ration. Forage made up either 42, 50, 58 or 66 percent of the cows’ diets on a dry matter basis.

“Canola meal was included at a constant 11 percent of the diet,” Kalscheur said. “As the amount of forage increased, dry matter intake increased linearly, while milk yield and energy-corrected milk remained the same across all four diets. As a result, feed efciency also increased linearly.”

There has been little research on feeding canola meal to cows early in their lactations, Kalscheur said. One study looked at cows that had calved and had been milking for 16 weeks.

The cows that had canola meal in their rations produced an average of 9.9 pounds more milk per day. Cows getting canola meal ate about 0.75-pound more dry matter per day, too.

“This additional dry matter was not fully responsible for the improved performance,” Kalscheur said. “More research on transition cows and early lactation cows is needed to further investigate how canola meal improves production.”

Canola meal is becoming more popular as a feed ingredient because canola production is growing, especially in Canada, Kalscheur said. Canola is a brassica and a type of rapeseed that has been bred to produce an edible oil plus feed for livestock.

An examination of canola meal from 11 crushing facilities in North America found that the crude protein content ranged from 40.6-43.7 percent, Kalscheur said. Soybean meal is at 46.3-55.9 percent crude protein.

Canola meal is the world’s second-most commonly traded protein source, with the U.S. dairy industry the biggest buyer, according to the Canola Council of Canada.

Iowa robotic dairies asked about management practices Milk production, components up on all farms

DUBUQUE, Iowa – What management practices are used on farms with robotic milking systems?

In 2017, Larry Tranel and Jenn Bentley looked at 15 farms in northeast Iowa. Tranel is an extension dairy specialist, while Bentley is a dairy eld specialist. Both are with Iowa State University.

The 15 farms used a total of 41 robots, with one to six per farm. Three brands were represented: Lely, DeLaval and Galaxy.

Milk production rose with the robotic milkers. Farms saw an increase of 10 to 17 percent, with the smaller increase coming where the machines were retrotted into existing buildings instead of going into new structures.

Before the robots went into use, the surveyed farms had average milk production of 70 pounds per cow, per day.

With the robots in use, average milk output rose to 82 pounds per day.

The milk’s fat test rose with the change to robots. Before the robots it averaged 3.88 percent, and afterward it was 4.07 percent.

The protein test climbed from 3.16 percent to 3.26 percent.

Meanwhile, the average somatic cell count fell from 223,000 to 183,000.

These farms had an average of 201 cows each and an average of 60 cows milked by each robot. Most of the farms – 85 percent – used a free-ow cow movement system. Seven percent used a partially guided system and 7 percent used a guided system.

The average number of cows per employee rose after the robots went into use. Before the machines, the average number of cows per employee was 46, but once the robots were installed, the average climbed to 79.

These farms had a range of 50-150 cows per pen. Four farms had one milking group, 10 had two milking groups, and one farm had three groups.

Seven farms used one dry-cow group and seven farms had two groups.

One farm had four dry-cow groups.

Before switching to robots, 73 percent of the farms milked in a parlor.

Twenty percent milked in tiestall barns and 7 percent milked in stanchion barns.

More than half the farms installed

their robotic milkers in new buildings.

Seven of the farms made a point of pushing feed up to the cows 12 or more times a day. Five farms pushed feed four to six times a day, and one farm pushed feed as needed. Two farms did not push because they used feed bunks.

Some of these farms fed avored pellets at the robots or pellets that contained protein. Other farms fed a nutrient-dense grain mix. Roasted soybeans were part of the feed regimen on some farms, as was propylene glycol.

The farms tried other types of feed but stopped for various reasons. For example, a cottonseed protein was found to not work well in a robotic system.

Neither was a nely ground grain mix because the cows could not eat it fast enough.

Pelleted feed cost an average of $314 a ton. The percentage of forage in the partial mixed ration (PMR) the cows received averaged 64 percent and ranged from 56-75 percent.

Most farms fed pellets based on milk production. Cows got one pound of pellets for every 8-13 pounds of milk.

The dairymen were asked about the top three factors that affected cow visits to the robots. Pellet nutrition including quality, taste and the amount fed was one answer.

Also, the nutrient content of the PMR itself was mentioned. The farmers said the PMR’s consistency and energy balance were important.

Cow movement and behavior was the third top factor said to affect cow behavior and movement.

The dairymen said their average annual cost to maintain a robotic milker was $7,508, with the minimum at $3,000 and the maximum at $16,500.

Milkhouse supplies per robot cost an average of $1,749. The minimum was $487 and the maximum was $4,312.

Farmers said key factors for success with robotic milkers included daily and routine maintenance, cow nutrition, cow health, good barn ow, and using the records and data the machines provided.

All the dairy producers agreed their robots were good nancial investments.

They said the robots improved cow health, increased labor efciency and increased milk production.

In addition, all the farmers rated their purchases good personal investments because the machines gave them labor exibility. And, each farmer said investing in robots was a good management investment. They said the robots helped them take better care of their cows thanks to the data collected on rumination and cow activity.
