Guernseys make Oak Knob Farm home

CRESCO, Iowa – Fliers that welcomed people to Oak Knob Dairy said, “It’s not fancy here, just home.” For the Church family, home includes a herd of 110 registered Guernsey cows on display June 28 during a tour the family hosted for the National Guernsey Convention. Craig and Gladie Church farm together with their son and daughter-in-law, Nate and Naomi, who have ve children, Zeke, 17, Emily, 14, Elise, 12, Avery, 9, and Sam, 7, on their dairy, Oak Knob Farm, near Cresco, Iowa.

Craig and Gladie also have three other children, who now have jobs away from the farm. Their daughter, Amy, and her husband, Huub te Plate, have two kids, Lucas, 15, and Nicole, 13; their son, Gabe, and his wife, Kimberly, have three children, Livy, 8, Jackson, 6, and Henry, 4; and their son, Seth, and his wife, Shannon, have three children, Maeve, 3, and 1-year-old twins, Cole and Reed. “I love working with them. milk.” Over 185 people came to the farm for the tour as part of the National Guernsey Convention held by the American Guernsey Association June 26-30 in Dubuque, Iowa. During the visit, people could take a self-guided tour through the freestall barn, which the Church family built in 1997, the same year they converted their tiestall barn to a step up parlor. Visitors also stopped in at the youngstock facilities, built from 2008 to 2011. Members of the Church family were there to point out a few of their more notable cows and share about their family’s breeding program. Craig described how they like to breed for medium structured cows with good feet and legs, and well attached udders along with longevity and reproductive efciency.
Currently, the herd has a rolling herd average of 17,639 pounds of milk with 831 pounds of fat and 581 pounds of protein, which translates to 20,973 pounds of energy corrected milk. This makes the herd fth on the Top Commercial Guernsey Herd List for Energy Corrected Milk according to the national association. “I like old cows, protable cows that will last,” Craig said. When Craig and Gladie rst started farming, Craig wanted to keep a small plaque with the names of the cows that produced over 100,000 pounds of milk. “That number now far exceeds the little plaque he had,” Gladie said. However, Craig is a member of the national board of directors, and the family was excited to host an event they could share with many people
who also love the Guernsey breed. “The people we’ve met because we’ve been active in the state organization are dear to us,” Gladie said. “We’ve gotten to be good friends with a lot of people.” They have also been able to travel internationally thanks to their Guernseys. In 2013, Craig and Gladie went to the
World Guernsey Conference held on the Isle of Guernsey while Nate and Naomi attended in 2016 when it was held in New Zealand. Guernseys have been a staple of the home and farm the Church family love. “I wouldn’t want to deal with any other breed,” Gladie said.

They have also had 52 cows score Excellent 90 or above and several bulls sampled in A.I., including their most recent, Oak Knob Maxie Laredo. The bull sired six daughters, the most of any other bulls, on the American Guernsey Association 2017 Component Queen list. Guernseys have been a part of the Church family for nearly 100 years; however, Craig brought home the rst registered animal, Boe Ridge R Hope, in 1964 as a 4-H project. The family’s rst homebred
Excellent cow was a descendent of that rst registered calf and many animals in the herd can be traced to this one individual. Craig and Gladie married in 1971 and joined the farm the following year. Over the years, they have worked to increase the size of their herd and transitioned to 100 percent registered. Nate returned to the farm in 1996 after graduating from Iowa State University. In 1999, he married Naomi, also an ISU graduate, who also joined the farm at that time. The Church family has

While long summer days are busy, Beack’s most challenging time is in the winter months. “In the winter, it takes longer to haul and you never know what the weather is going to do,” Beack said. “When the snowplows are called off the roads, the milk haulers still have to go through.” Despite the challenges weather may bring along with the long hours away from the farm, Beack nds purpose in his second career as a milk hauler. “Sometimes it’s frustrating, but a lot of it’s good. You meet farmers and see different people. I guess that’s why a guy does it,” Beack said. Over the years, milk hauling has changed dramatically. “There are lots of changes constantly,” Beack said. “Especially with farmers switching to three times a day milking. You have to give the guys hauling milk a lot of credit. They are working for the farmer and you have to do a job no matter what.” Beack changes his schedule around the farmers. Some days he hauls with the semi early in the morning and some days it’s later morning. It all depends on the day. “I usually haul milk to cities but sometimes we haul to companies in Litcheld,” Beack said. As Beack thinks about the past 40 years, and the two jobs he has created in the dairy industry for him and his family, he is proud to be both a milk hauler and dairy farmer. “Milking and hauling – you have to do it no matter what,” Beack said. Despite the challenges and long days, Beack nds joy in milking cows with his wife and doing what he loves, driving truck. “I just enjoy both. I love to drive truck and I love milking cows,” he said. “I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it.”

Culver’s Dairy Days shows appreciation to farmers By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com
BAXTER, Minn. – As employees dressed in cow hats, and the restaurant was decorated with black and white balloons, those who stopped at the Culver’s in north central Minnesota were in for a delightful afternoon. Customers, local celebrities and dairy farmers participated in the eighth annual Culver’s Dairy Days June 27 in Baxter, Minn. “I grew up in Wisconsin, and it’s always been important to my family for us to represent dairy,” said restaurant
owner David Leidl. “As part of the Culver’s chain, we should support dairy and agriculture in general.” In the days leading up to the event, restaurant customers could show their support by offering a goodwill donation to the Brainerd FFA. The event raised nearly $1,000 to the local chapter. On the afternoon of June 27, Dairy Days participants competed in three competitions – milking a cow, throwing a straw bale and eating a cup-full of frozen custard. “This is our chance to promote the industry and make people aware of dairy and ag-

Key factors to making high-quality corn silage By Ron Johnson

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Corn silage is one of the most economical ways to feed dairy and beef cattle. But the silage must be of high quality, according to Hugo Ramirez, Iowa State University Extension dairy specialist. Ramirez spoke during the IowaWisconsin Silage Conference June 21 at Dubuque, Iowa. Corn silage, he said, is unique because it contains both grain and forage. “This combination provides animals with dense energy in the kernels and rumen-stimulating ber from the leaves, stalk and husk,” Ramirez said. Making quality corn silage, Ramirez said, is a labor-intensive and fast-paced operation. Harvesting is an important time, because it’s critical to getting the most nutrients in the feed. It’s important to chop at the right moisture content so the feed packs well and the silage ferments properly, Ramirez said. The optimal moisture content is 65 percent, with a range of 60 to 70 percent. Kernel milk line is an indicator of the corn’s maturity. Corn plants can be expected to dry 0.5 to 1 percent per day. Farmers can estimate when their corn will be ready to chop. Chop when the milk line is 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down the kernel, Ramirez said. Doing that will allow for optimal starch deposition. The theoretical length of cut (TLC) is also important. It should be the width of a penny if the silage has been run
through the processor, Ramirez said. If it has not been processed, shoot for particles 1/4- to 1/2-inch long. Particles that are too long will be hard to pack. The result could be poor fermentation and spoilage. The right particle size is also important for good feed intake and fermentation in the rumen. “Kernel processing unlocks the energy potential of the starch in the kernels,” Ramirez said. “Properly processed silage should have no whole kernels, and no pieces of cob should be visible.” Set the processor’s roller gap for 1-3 millimeters and make sure the processor runs fast enough for good shearing, Ramirez said. A forage lab can assign a processing score to the silage. A score of 50 to 70 is adequate, while a score above 70 is ideal. But it can be important to make immediate decisions about the processing quality during harvesting. To do this, use a cup that holds 32 ounces. Fill the cup with processed corn silage, dump it out and count the number of whole and partly damaged kernels, Ramirez said. Fewer than two whole or partly damaged kernels means the feed has been processed well. Ramirez went on to discuss storing corn silage in bunker silos. He said it’s important to pack the silage tightly and then seal out oxygen. Keeping oxygen out is essential for the growth of the bacteria that produce lactic acid. “These bacteria are responsible for converting sugars into lactic acid, pre-

serving the silage,” he said. Before packing the feed, calculate the bunker’s capacity. Doing so will help ensure the tractor doing the packing is heavy enough and that fresh feed is brought in at the right rate to get the correct silage density. “Target the density at 15 pounds of dry matter per cubic foot or more,” Ramirez said. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed a spreadsheet calculator to estimate silage density: https://fyi. uwex.edu/forage/. The next step in making quality corn silage is to seal the bunker with an oxygen barrier and plastic. Proper sealing will help prevent the loss of dry matter and their nutrients. “Lining bunkers before lling them is another way to prevent spoilage around the edges of the bunker,” he said. “Additional weight is needed to keep the plastic cover down and prevent air inltration.” Placing tires on the plastic is the
most common way to do this. Some farmers cut the tires and use only their sidewalls. Others drill holes in the tires so water can drain out and reduce the chances of mosquito breeding. Covering a bunker silo with hundreds or thousands of tires is a laborintensive task. “But the benets are great, because well-preserved silage means more recovery of dry matter, less nutrient loss and better feed overall,” he said. Ideally, the tires should be placed so they touch each other. He suggested having a dened forage program in place. Such a program should include corn hybrid selection, growing, harvesting, storing and feeding out of storage. “The time, money and effort invested in a high-quality process can pay big dividends, since the results represent the base for future feed,” Ramirez said. “It’s important to make every effort possible to harvest, store and feed high-quality forage.”

The evening will include farm tours, a judging contest, an appearance by Princess Kay Emily Annexstad, cheese and crackers, door prizes, and lunch. Visitors are welcome to arrive anytime after 7:30 p.m. The Schroeder family includes John’s wife Bev, Jason’s wife Michele and their children Alex, Aiden, and April; John and Bev’s son Tim and his wife Lauren and their children Layla and Isaac; and John and Bev’s daughter, Melissa. The Schroeder farm has had Registered Holsteins since 1927. The Schroeders currently milk 50 cows and raise their own youngstock. They farm 300 acres of cropland. Schroeder Holsteins has earned the Progressive Breeder Award (PBR) through the Holstein Association for 38 years and has earned numerous milk quality awards. The Schroeders were named the 2010 Nicollet County Farm Family of the Year and the 2008 Nicollet County Outstanding Conservationists. The UMN Extension 2018 Summer Field Days are scheduled at locations across Minnesota. The eld days allow people to visit operations that have been successful, learn about each dairy operation’s features, and ask questions and learn from others. The original barn includes a nursery where calves are kept in individual pens for the rst 7-10 days. After the nursery, calves are put in group pens where they are fed with automated milk feeders. Calves are housed in groups of 20. The weaned calf barn has 6 pens, each holding up to 30 calves. For the past 4 years, calves have been managed by Katie Van Heel, David’s daughter-in-law. Katie attributes attention to detail and cleanliness for the farm’s success with calves. The Borgerdings milk 160 cows in addition to running 1,100 acres. This land includes 250 acres of pasture for grazing. The rest of the land is used for feed and cash crops, including edible beans. The Borgerdings use biological farming to maximize soil health and fertility. Cows are primarily bred to calve in the fall, and the farm uses Fleckvieh and Holstein genetics to produce a cow that is suitable for freestall and pasture conditions. Joe and his family have used innovative thinking to achieve cost savings while also meeting farm goals. Some of these innovations include unique approaches to drainage, ventilation, and feed management. ConƟnued from CALENDAR | Page 15 Iowa Women in Agriculture has announced its 12th annual conference at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny Aug. 2. This year’s theme is Connections, Challenges and Celebrations. The 2018 Conference will deliver a full menu of decision-making ingredients for today’s volatile economic climate: the current outlook for ag trade agreements, marketing strategies for low commodity prices, nancial risk management tactics, income and estate-tax tips, and the latest on the new farm bill. The keynote speakers will highlight the unique challenges of women’s roles, offer opportunities to laugh and learn, and to celebrate agriculture. The one-day conference runs from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Mary Kay Thatcher, former American Farm Bureau senior director of Congressional relations and current senior lead of Federal Government Relations for Syngenta, will keynote the conference with the latest highlights on the 2018 farm bill. Thatcher also will share her experiences as an ag leader, and encourage women to pursue active roles in agricultural associations and agribusinesses. Keri Jacobs, Iowa State University ag economist and cooperatives specialist, will offer her insights on producer cooperatives in an era of ag competition and consolidation. Angie Treptow, regional vice-president, Farm Credit Services of America, will wrap up the morning sessions with a deep dive into lender expectations for 2019. Luncheon keynoter Delaney Howell, the rst woman to host Iowa Public TV’s Market to Market, will share her personal experiences as well as the observations she’s gleaned from meeting farmers and reporting on the markets during her rst year on the job. The afternoon’s choice of breakout sessions and presenters features: – The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act: 10 Key Changes that May Impact You: Kristine Tidgren, director, Iowa Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation at Iowa State University. – Cultivating Your Culture: Sally Hollis, accounting and human resources manager and family member of Lanehaven Farms, Inc., Waterloo. – Turn Off the Noise: Making Smart Market Decisions in Today’s Noisy World: Angie Setzer, Algona; Vice-President of Grain, Citizens LLC; and Market to Market commentator. The conference will conclude with capstone speaker Rebecca Long Chaney, Nebraska author and ag advocate, who will inspire attendees with her message: Dare to Risk Life’s Change. Participants also will have a unique pre-conference opportunity to attend a farm/ag business tour on Wednesday, Aug. 1, hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Women in Agriculture Program. The motor coach tour begins and ends in Ankeny, with stops at Louis Dreyfus Ethanol Plant in Grand Junction and the ISU 450 Farm in Ames. A welcome and networking reception will be held on Wednesday, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Geisler Farms, four miles east of Ankeny. Malinda and Darrell Geisler will share the story of their third-generation grain farm and their journey of building an agrotourism business, Growing Family Fun, as well as tips for becoming a wedding and reception event destination. Registration for the conference is $50 until July 23, and $70 after that date. Registration includes the pre-conference tour, evening welcome reception, continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Register online, or from 7:15-8 a.m. on the day of the conference. No registration refunds will be possible. Early bird registration is required for those attending the preconference tour.
