GARFIELD, Minn. – In over 50 years of dairy farming, Brad Olson has never experienced anything like what he witnessed July 11.

“On Monday, the corn was ne, but when I went back out on Wednesday, the eld was bare,” Olson said.

In two days, armyworms destroyed over 12 acres of Olson’s corneld, totaling 5 percent of his corn land.

Olson milks 60 cows with his wife, Robin, and two sons, Tyler and Kasey, near Gareld, Minn.

“I walked into the eld and it was moving,” Olson said. “The worms were literally falling off the plant. I counted 13 worms on one plant. If you plant 3,200 plants per acre, that’s a lot of worms.”

However, armyworms are uncommon in corn, especially in conventionally tilled elds, according

to an article published by DuPont Pioneer.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Olson said.

“I have been cultivating corn for 10 years and I have never, ever seen this.

I even conventionally till all my elds; you almost have to in this area.”

Estimating 500,000 worms in a 12acre eld, the eld will most likely be unable to come back this year, Olson said.

“I have never seen anything devour anything like this before,” said Olson about the armyworms. “It’s crazy how something so small can do so much damage. The corn was 6 feet tall and now its maybe 3 feet.”

Armyworm moths lay eggs on grasses and the larvae move to young plants, feeding on leaf margins. This causes severe defoliation and removes leaf tissue.

The adult moth is pale gray to pale brown with a white speck in the center of each front wing. The moths overwinter in southern climates and migrate north in the early spring. After laying eggs, the eggs hatch in one to two weeks and the larvae feed at night Turn to ARMYWORMS | Page 5

An utter surprise

GOODRIDGE, Minn. – Linda Hanson is still delighting in the moment she was recognized for her commitment to the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association with the 2018 Distinguished Service Award.

“It’s a tradition to keep the award recipients a surprise until the moment their biographies are read,” Hanson said.

“It’s a fun way to keep the crowd guessing. When one of my best friends, Mary Creek, was reading through my bio, I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s talking about me.’”

Hanson received her award during a dinner banquet July 29 at the National Ayrshire Convention in Branson, Mo. The dairy farmer and Ayrshire enthusiast milks 140 registered Holsteins and Ayrshires with her husband, Mike, and sons, Matthew and Steven, in Pennington County near Goodridge, Minn. The Hansons’ eldest son, David, also is a part of the dairy, although he lives in southern Minnesota.

At the convention, some of Hanson’s family was present to watch her receive the award.

However, Hanson thought the gathering was in part to her retiring from her position as a national board member of the breed association.

“David came down with me and his wife was going to y down later in the week,” Hanson said. “When we got to the airport, we also picked up Mike. It’s not beyond Mike to do something like that, especially if the farm is under control.”

When Hanson realized the true reason for her family’s at-

tendance, she was utterly surprised.

“This is so humbling,” said Hanson of her recognition.

“I’m pleased to death but know it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my family – their willingness and patience.”

Hanson rst became involved with the Ayrshire breed at 10 years old, when she received a colored calf for a 4-H project.

“I grew up in the local Ayrshire association with my par-

ents dairy farming in Iowa,” Hanson said.

Her contributions became more substantial in college when she applied for the national distinguished junior member awards.

“That was my rst introduction to the national convention, and it has snowballed from there,” Hanson said.

Since the early 1990s, Hanson’s dedication to the Ayrshire breed has been ample. Alongside showing and developing a reputable herd of registered

cattle, Hanson also served two full terms as a board member and nished one term as an interim member, culminating 14 years in that leadership role.

Additionally, Hanson spoke on behalf of the breed at a past National 4-H Dairy Conference and has continually promoted U.S. genetics.

“I’ve traveled a bit and it’s all been very educational,” said Hanson of her journeys to Australia, Finland, New Zealand and Sweden.

Hanson’s trips were a part of federal government-funded promotion to encourage the use of United States’ commodities across the globe.

“No doubt that was one of the best things,” said Hanson of her time as a board member.

“It’s enjoyable to encourage other breeders to use U.S. genetics and provide an opportunity for them.”

Hanson and her family have developed their Ayrshire herd, moving their own genetics throughout the industry and helping create valuable animals.

The family has received accolades in the show ring, and now Hanson’s eldest son is replacing her on the national board of directors.

“I’m so proud,” Hanson said. “It means a lot for other breeders to have that load of

As Hanson reects on her involvement, she is quick to point out the intangibles she received by being engrossed in the breed association.

“I’ve had a pleasure doing, but I’ve gotten far more out of the association by [being involved],” Hanson said. “It’s in my nature to participate, and the Ayrshire breed has led me to the opportunity to do things I might not have done otherwise. Mostly, I’ve had the pleasure of working with other breeders. I like the Ayrshire cow, and the people with the cow.”

Although no longer a board member, Hanson will still be an active member of the breed association and continue developing her family’s herd.

“Ayrshires are a part of who I am,” said Hanson, whose dad and brother continue to milk Ayrshires in eastern Iowa. “I’ve always enjoyed the color and pattern of the breed. And, since we’ve started milking Holsteins, too, we’ve noticed how much hardier the Ayrshires are. They can take care of themselves.”

Hanson encourages other farmers to get involved with breed associations and activities outside of the day-to-day tasks of farming.

“I have the utmost respect for people who milk cows,” Hanson said. “But take what you love and get involved. If you like cows, farming and the industry, then take it further.”

After all, Hanson’s interest in Ayrshire cattle began as a small 4-H project and has transpired into having one of the breed’s most notable distinctions.

“I am so thankful to be this year’s award winner, having been given the honor and opportunity to earn it,” Hanson said. “Life is not about dollars and cents, but what makes you happy.”

“I rst noticed them in a grassy area by my eld,” Olson said. “They must have moved from there to my corn eld.”

After noticing the worms, Olson called two individuals from a crop input business in Sauk Centre, Minn.

“Jim and Todd are good to me,” Olson said. “I have known them long enough to trust they know what they are talking about, and I am grateful for that. I came out on Thursday and they had everything sprayed,” Olson said. “But that was an expense I wasn’t planning on paying.”

The larvae are about 1.5 inches long with orange and dark stripes. If they are less than 1.5 inches and signicant defoliation is occurring, insecticides can help kill the worms. If they are longer, however, they are nearly done feeding and insecticides will not be helpful.

“Good thing we got them when we did or it would have been much worse,” Olson said.

While the armyworms are devastating, Olson is familiar with overcoming adversity. In 1979, Olson started dairy farming full time with his dad only to become the sole farmer 10 years later after Olson’s father unexpectedly passed away.

“When dad died it was all put on my shoulders,” Olson said. “It sure puts life in perspective.”

Overcoming issues, including damage from a tornado, a barn roof collapse and a stroke last year, has prepared Olson to take on any challenge that comes his way.

“This too shall pass,” Olson said. “You never know what’s going to happen. You have to keep punching. That’s what I live by.”

Organic goes well with Bushman family values

Castalia dairy started transition 19 years ago

CASTALIA, Iowa – As Chuck and Marlys Bushman grew their family, their interest in organic farming also grew.

“We were trying to eat better,” Marlys said. “We started hearing about chemicals on the elds and how it hurts the food. We would be spraying [the elds] with the kids in the yard and the wind would be blowing. It wasn’t good.”

Over time, they realized they wanted their changing lifestyle to match their farming practices, and eventually they started transitioning to organic in 1999. Now, the Bushmans milk 120 cows on their certied organic dairy near Castalia, Iowa.

together with their son and daughter-in-law, Fritz and Alyssa, who have two children, Cyrus, 4, and Dulcy, 1. Their youngest three children, Bjorn, 19, Isaac, 17, and Rachael, 15, are also on the farm. Two other sons and their families dairy farm in the area, while another son and three other daughters work outside of agriculture.

As the second generation in his family on the site, Chuck started buying into the farm at the age of 20. Maryls also grew up on a dairy farm and after the two were married, they enjoyed days of milking cows and doing eldwork.

“It’s good for a marriage,” Marlys said about milking cows with her husband. “We were always working together, and we each knew what was going on in the operation.”

Making the switch would not only line up more clearly with their lifestyle, it would allow them to continue their 50-cow mark.

“At the time people were expanding,” Chuck said. “In order to stay small, we thought it (going organic) was one way to do it. We’ve expanded since then, but we’ve also added more family.”

Although the reasons behind their transition were solid, the family felt challenged by making the changes on their dairy.

“If I could do it over again, I would do it differently,” Chuck said.

bushel. Chuck said he was only getting half the yield growing organic corn, but still only receiving the conventional price because they had not become certied yet.

“I would have seeded more of the farm down to alfalfa,” Chuck said.

He also wished he would have reached out to other organic farmers for more tips.

“The rst few years the weeds got away from us and then we had to ght it because it’s a continuous battle,” he said.

The Bushmans already had the cows on pasture a portion of the day. Other changes they had to make on the cowside of their farm management were not difcult. But having to take the convention price

before they got on the organic milk truck proved hard on their pocketbooks. The last conventional milk check they received was $9.75 per hundredweight, a 25-year low for the family.

“That transition was really tough,” Chuck said about going through those prices.

Despite the obstacles, the Bushmans do not regret their decision and like the continual education of farming organically.

“When you farm this way, if you have a problem – weeds or bugs in the crops – you can’t just call the co-op to come out,” Chuck said. “You have to nd a way to x it. We’re still learning almost 20 years later.”

“My only regret with the parlor is that we didn’t do it 20 years ago,” Chuck said. “It’s so much nicer milking. There’s no bending down.”

Chuck admits he did not make these changes for himself.

“We built it for the next generation,” he said.

Fritz returned full time to the dairy in April 2017; however, he has always worked on the dairy in some capacity. After high school, he went through the twoyear John Deere mechanic program at Northeast Iowa Community College and then worked for a dealership for four years.

“It’s what I’ve always done and what I’ve always wanted to do,” Fritz said about farming.

Being certied organic has been a good t for the family.

“It made us more conscientious of how we eat, what we’re eating and what we’re feeding the world,” Marlys said. “We’re a niche and it’s for the people in the world who want food this way. We’re here as an option for people.”

But it is not only the organic focus that the family enjoys.

“I love it for working with the family,” Marlys said. “It teaches kids responsibility. I didn’t have to worry about my kids being out late at night because they had to be up to do chores in the morning.”

And when the entire family gathers on the farm, both Marlys and Chuck feel a sense of ease.

There are also many occasions when all ve sons get together to do eldwork such as making hay.

“We are all out there getting done what we needed

to get done,” Chuck said. “Being together makes me thankful.”

Farming with a passion Edwards continues parents’ dairy despite challenges

EDITORS NOTE: Ten years ago, Dairy Star published an article titled, “Ready or not, here they come,” about young adults starting in dairy farming. The article highlighted DiDi Edwards, who is dairy farming today.

WORTHINGTON, Minn. – Even though dairy farming was not the original plan for DiDi (Christopherson) Edwards, her passion for the cows took her home.

“I knew I liked science and agriculture, so I went to the University of MinnesotaTwin Cities with a focus on biology,” Edwards said. “My original plan was to go to medical or vet school. But in my fourth year of college, I took some dairy production classes and realized that is what I liked and knew.”

Edwards and her husband, Jason, milk 65 cows with Edwards’ parents – Dean and Carol Christopherson – at the farm she grew up on near Worthington, Minn.

The entirety of the dairy operation remains in Minnesota, while Edwards and her husband also raise bull calves to 300-400 pounds at their farm site near Sibley, Iowa – 10 miles south of the dairy farm.

“My dad helps my husband and my husband helps my dad,” Edwards said. “It works out well.”

Throughout the day, Edwards is responsible for parts of the farm, including milking and feeding calves.

“Every day is different. You have the same schedule, but it’s different. You get to work outside and get to spend more time

When Edwards returned to her parents’ farm following college graduation in 2007, the family was milking 100 cows in a double-4 herringbone parlor. The family sold part of their herd to accommodate Edwards’ schedule as a dairy farmer and mother.

“When I found out I was pregnant, we sold some cows,” Edwards said. “It helps having a supportive husband who is willing to help out.”

Although Edwards’ parents were encouraged by their daughter’s interest in returning to the family farm, it was also a decision they did not take lightly.

“My parents were hesitant at rst, be-

cause of the low milk prices; but I realized dairy farming is what I really had a passion for and what I truly loved to do,” Edwards said.

Since Edwards’ return to dairy farming, she has always made the cows a priority.

“Coming out of college, you are full of ideas,” Edwards said. “Some of those ideas I would still like to implement.”

Over the years, the family moved calves from a barn into individual hutches to improve respiratory problems. They also worked with a nutritionist to better their feeding program. Both of these were goals Edwards had when she rst came home.

“College was a different environment to experience and learn,” she said. “It was a new thing and a way to get a new per-

spective. I had so many ideas I wanted to change. But, my dad is not used to it. If it’s not broke, there is no reason in changing it.”

Edwards still hopes to purchase a TMR mixer and update the parlor to benet the milking herd and everyone’s work schedule, as well as making the farm more efcient.

“Working with family and nding a balance is tough,” Edwards said. “With two families being nancially supported by the farm, wanting to bring in new ideas is not always welcomed. [As a young farmer], you may get a lot of doors shut in your face, but look for that open window or new opportunities. They may shoot you down, but don’t give up.”

Despite the challenges of dairy farming, Edwards nds joy in what she does.

“There are good days and bad days,” she said. “I really enjoy it and have a desire to want to do it.”

Edwards’ time in the dairy industry is not only found on the farm. She continually speaks with others about farming, especially with people who do not have a dairy background.

“Being a part of dairying gives me a drive to want [people] to see what we do every day,” she said. “As a dairy producer, it is benecial for me to go out and talk to people. I make sure people are aware of where their food comes from.”

Edwards also spends part of her summer volunteering at the Minnesota State Fair. While at the fair, Edwards helps in the milking parlor and gives tours. This experience is one of the many ways Edwards shares her story in the community and keeps her passion for dairy alive.

“I truly believe anyone in dairy has to have a true passion,” she said. “It is not easy work or a big money maker. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but my passion is in dairy farming. I made the right choice to dairy farm.”

CALMAR, Iowa – Although Gary Elsbernd has seen a greater prevalence of twins on his farm, never has he seen identical triplets in his time as a dairy farmer.

But as of July 15, Elsbernd can say he has seen it all.

“In all my years dairying, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Elsbernd said. … “A set of identical male triplets out of a rst-calf Holstein heifer.”

Elsbernd milks around 300 cows near Calmar, Iowa.

The dairy’s herdsman, Manual, found a single calf in the early hours of July 15, unbeknownst the heifer was having multiple calves.

“I had no idea this was coming,” Elsbernd said. “I had just delivered twins at 2 a.m. and saw this heifer was showing signs of calving. I left a note for the herdsman to check on her in the morning.”

One calf was born when the employee observed the heifer shortly before 5 a.m., yet the animal was still laboring with a second breeched calf.

“He reached in and helped the calf out,” Elsbernd said. “When that calf was born and the heifer still didn’t move, he reached in and found a third calf.”

More than 10 days following birth, the three AngusHolstein bull calves and the Holstein heifer are doing well. Elsbernd plans to raise the calves for market.

At the dairy, each animal is serviced no more than twice by articial insemination before they are bred with a beef bull.

Recently, Elsbernd’s herd has seen an increase in twinning; an occurrence most likely inuenced to the farm’s presynch and ovsynch programs, he said.

However, the chances of a multiple birth in this particular case may have more to do with the heifer’s genetic makeup.

The Greenway heifer is an identical twin, herself, with her dam, a Colt P-Red, also having an identical set of twin bull calves this spring.

“The heifer’s identical twin sister is due to calve in the next two weeks,” Elsbernd said. “I don’t expect [triplets] to happen again, but we’ll be closely watching her, especially with the family she comes from.”

Global trade turmoil remains in spotlight

Bleeding in the world dairy market slowed a bit in the July 17 Global Dairy Trade auction (GDT) which saw its weighted average slip 1.7 percent, following the 5.0 percent drop July 3. This was the fourth consecutive session of decline.

Rennet casein led the declines, down 9.5 percent.

Butter dropped 8.1 percent, following a 4 percent decline last time, and anhydrous milkfat was down 5.2 percent, following a 1.7 percent decline. Cheddar was off 3.3 percent after dropping 4.3 percent in the last event.

Again, only two offerings were to the positive, the ones that led the declines last time. Whole milk powder was up 1.5 percent, following a steep 7.3 percent drop last time, and skim milk powder was up 0.8 percent, after falling 4.6 percent.

FC Stone equates the GDT 80 percent butterfat butter to $2.1920 per pound U.S. CME butter closed Friday at $2.25. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.6312 per pound U.S. and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.52. GDT skim milk powder averaged 88.85 cents per pound and whole milk powder averaged $1.3485. CME nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 78 1/2-cents per pound.

The GDT Oversight Board announced that it approved two rule changes to “encourage a wider range of sellers to offer dairy ingredients on the auction platform, with the goal to expand the breadth of regional published prices.”

Global trade turmoil remains in the spotlight and FC Stone’s Arlan Suderman wrote in his July 16 Morning Commentary that “Europe and Japan have signed a trade agreement to ght against the protectionist efforts of the United States, failing to mention protectionist efforts of their own in recent decades.”

He talked of the “battle of public opinion and political persuasion, with most countries decrying protectionism while fully engaged in the same, and aggressively so.”

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski, in the July 23 Dairy Radio Now broadcast, said the ultimate question is, “Are we in this to build walls and barriers to slow global trade or expand it?” He said our actions right now appear to want to minimize global trade, which would be troubling for U.S. agriculture.

“One thing is clear,” he said, “The U.S. has no trade agreement with Japan and it looks like all the other major exporters now have at least some advantage, or will have an advantage, in the coming years.”

Suderman adds that “Few countries are willing to

fully eliminate tariffs and other protectionist mechanisms, although most want you to believe that is precisely the environment in which they operate.”

Kurzawski sees the Administration’s actions as an exertion of power and leverage to “essentially better our place at the negotiation table and although things over the past eight weeks have been fairly grim as far as the trade wars are concerned, and it may still get worse before it gets better, but I do think there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Back on the home front; the Agriculture Department’s latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, issued June 18, mirrored dairy projections in the July 12 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. It also stated that “With lower expected milk prices, milk cows are expected to average 9.395 million head in 2019, a year-over-year contraction of 10,000 head. Yield per cow was forecast at 23,170 pounds in 2018 (15 pounds less than last month’s forecast) and 23,475 pounds in 2019 (20 pounds less than last month’s forecast).”

“Feed price estimates for 2017/18 for corn and soybean meal were lowered from last month to $3.30$3.50 per bushel and $350 per short ton, respectively.

The alfalfa hay price in May was $189 per short ton, $6 higher than April and $32 higher than May of last year. The average corn price for 2018/19 was projected to be $3.30-$4.30 per bushel, 10 cents lower than last month’s forecast at the midpoint. The 2018/19 average soybean meal price was projected at $315-$355 per short ton, $15 lower than last month’s forecast at the midpoint.”

Meanwhile; dairy margins were lower the rst half of July, as trade tensions continue to batter milk and feed prices, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. “Deteriorating milk prices across the board eclipsed favorable movement lower in corn and meal,” the MW stated. “July brought Chinese tariffs of 25 percent on a multitude of U.S. dairy imports, as well as a further phasing in of Mexican tariffs on U.S. cheese imports. Unfortunately, there are not any reported talks on either front. President Trump however did announce a proposal to add a 10 percent tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports. The proposal will have hearings in late August and a two-month review after that, perhaps giving time for a resolution to be hammered out prior to further escalations. The Agriculture Department’s latest Livestock

Slaughter report shows that dairy cow culling dropped in June May but remained slightly above a year ago.

An estimated 237,500 head were slaughtered under federal inspection, down 7,600 head from April but 800 above a year ago. A total 1.57 million head were culled in the rst six months of the year, up 73,300 head or 4.9 percent from 2017.

The August Federal order Class I base milk price was announced by the USDA at $14.15 per hundredweight, down $1.21 from July and $2.57 below August 2017. It is the lowest August Class I price since 2009’s $10.04 and equates to $1.22 per gallon, down from $1.44 a year ago. The eight month average is at $14.54, down from $16.37 a year ago and compares to $14.10 in 2017.

Speaking of uid milk; while the April uptick in sales ended 10 months of consecutive declines, it was short-lived. After inching up 0.4 percent, the latest tracking put uid sales at 3.93 billion pounds, down 3.2 percent from May 2017.

Conventional product sales totaled 3.7 billion pounds, down 3.2 percent from a year ago. Organic products, at 219 million pounds, were down 3.2 percent and represented about 5.6 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.2 billion pounds, up 0.4 percent from a year ago, up 2.4 percent year to date, and made up 31.3 percent of total uid sales in the month and 31.1 percent for the year so far. Skim milk sales, at 325 million, were down 7.8 percent from May 2017 and down 9.2 percent year to date.

Total packaged uid milk sales in four month period climbed to 19.8 billion pounds, down 1.7 percent from the same period a year ago.

Conventional products year to date totaled 18.7 billion pounds, down 1.8 percent; organic products, at 1.1 million pounds, were up 0.1 percent. Organic represented about 5.5 percent of total uid milk sales January through May. The gures represent consumption of uid milk products in Federal milk order marketing areas and California, which account for approximately 92 percent of total uid milk sales in the U.S. A rose by any other name is still a rose but not milk and the dairy industry has been working hard to halt the use of that name by plant-based beverages.

One of the leaders of the ght, the National Milk Producers Federation’s (NMPF), praised the decision, stating in a press release that “requests for action by the agency are being heard.”

The American Dairy Coalition (ADC) also praised the decision, stating; “In over 200 countries across the world, plant-based juices are not allowed to call their product “milk” on labels unless they are, in fact, derived from a mammal.”

ADC CEO Laurie Fischer stated; “As we see dairy farmers across the U.S. suffering with low milk and other commodity prices, tariff uncertainty and lack of reliable labor force, this news provides a positive movement in the dairy industry.

After acknowledging that “an almond doesn’t lactate,” Dr. Gottlieb said the agency will soon will seek public input as a prelude to enforcing existing regulations on dairy labeling standards.

NMPF CEO Jim Mulhern charged; “After years of inaction in response to our complaints about these labeling violations, Dr. Gottlieb’s announcement is very encouraging. The marketing of non-dairy imitators must comply with federal standards of identity, and consumers should not be misled that these products have the same nutrition as real milk, yogurt, cheese and other dairy products.”

NMPF wrote to Gottlieb last year to complain that the agency has not been enforcing labeling standards, pointing out that FDA’s lack of action “has led to rampant consumer fraud related to the inferior nutrient content of these non-dairy products compared to their true dairy counterparts.” Mulhern adds that “in addition to fake “milks,” there also are a proliferation of products calling themselves “yogurt,” “cheese,” “ice cream” and “butter.”

Mid-July cash dairy prices were mixed as traders absorbed the week’s GDT and anticipated Friday afternoon’s June Milk Production report and Monday’s June Cold Storage data, which I will detail next week.

The Cheddar blocks closed the third Friday of the month at $1.52 per pound, down 4 cents on the week and 18 3/4-cents below a year ago. The barrels nished 15 1/4-cents lower at $1.27, 14 cents below a year ago and 25 cents below the blocks. A uctuating price gap is apparently becoming the new norm in this market. 7 cars of block sold on the week at the CME and 41 of barrel.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski wrote in his July 18 Early Morning Update that “There is still fear being baked into the market with the trade war uncertainty.

If mozzarella exports continue to slow down we can expect more barrels being offered on the market which explains why we have such a large spread of plus 15 cents between blocks and barrels. Also, freight continues to be a huge issue for moving dairy commodities around the country in the past year. Moving barrels from Idaho eastward to where the demand is has been much more costly and can be another explanation why we have such a large spread.”

Dairy Market News says that some barrel producers are reporting slow sales this summer, leading to inventory management concerns. That said, a number of other varietal cheesemakers are seeing steady to increasing sales as the summer progresses. Spot milk prices were mostly up on the week but there were some loads as low as $4 under Class III. The active spot milk trading range is between 50 cents under to $1.00 over Class. Cheese production varies by plant, but a growing number of Midwestern cheesemakers are allotting days off as milk becomes less available.

Western cheese makers report domestic demand has been lackluster and disappointing. And while export cheese demand has been stable, issues with our largest trading partners have battered U.S. cheese sales and other countries are entering into trade agreements with competitors while stockpiles grow here.

Milk intakes are tightening, says DMN, but manufacturers have plenty to feed an already active cheese production system. Contacts hope that domestic food service cheese demand can reenergize as processors prepare for a new school year and for the pizza season

to come.

Spot butter closed Friday at $2.25 per pound, up 2 1/2-cents on the week but 33 1/2-cents below a year ago, with 8 carloads trading spaces on the week.

Cream in butter churns became a Central region rarity the week of July 16, according to DMN, and as cream prices continue their upward climb, butter churners are taking a step back from the market.

Some are returning cream to the spot market in lieu of churning. GDT index results were bearish on the butter side, but domestic markets continue to stand their ground, says DMN. Western butter stocks are heavy, and some butter makers are more than happy to sell excess cream rather than churn. Butter inventories have grown seasonally to the point of meeting most near-term needs. Contacts say that heat and summer vacations are cutting into retail sales, but food service demand is strong. Some processors report sales to international markets have become more difcult as the gap between domestic and international butter prices has

shrunk.

Grade A nonfat dry milk ended the week at 78 1/2-cents per pound, up 3 cents but 8 3/4-cents below a year ago, with 13 cars exchanging hands on the week.

Dry whey closed Friday at 42 cents per pound, up a quarter-cent on the week.

The June Consumer Price Index for all food is 253.2, up 1.4 percent from 2017. The dairy products index is 216.1, up 0.4 percent. Fresh whole milk was down 2.1 percent; cheese, up 2.0 percent; and butter, was up 2.8 percent.

Lastly in politics, in a procedural move on July 18, the House approved a motion to appoint conferees to meet with Senate counterparts to hammer out a nal Farm Bill. The Senate is expected to do likewise next week. There are some differences to reconcile between the two versions, including the dairy title’s safety net, so the Compromise Committee will have its work cut out for it.

The milk market is trying to stabilize as talk of improving export demand is increasing price optimism. Tariffs tend to be deflationary in nature to export sellers being impacted, but do increase demand to buyers that do not have to pay tariffs as devalued prices become more affordable to them.

As time goes on, it is likely that U.S. export buyer demand will shift to more non-tariff customers, stabilizing our markets.

Dairy margins continue to remain under pressure. For producers that use hedging tools, the tariff situation creates increased trading risk. On one hand, if profits are offered they should be protected, but if the wrong hedging tool is selected and the tariff situation ends, significant market opportunity may be left on the table.

It is likely that U.S. commodity markets will be dealing with retaliatory tariffs for some time. A good example of this is the Russian ban in 2014. There was much hope that it would end quickly, but market distortion and a shift in EU export business is still in place today. The good news is that markets did their job and restored dairy opportunities for

that region. This will eventually happen for U.S. producers as well.

International milk product prices are softening as foreign suppliers need to compete more aggressively to keep from losing business to the U.S. This is making it difficult to see who and what market factors are leading price moves.

U.S. milk production improved in June, but is slowing leading to tightening supply and firmer spot milk prices.

Surplus loads that were trading $3.00-5.00/cwt under class are now trading $.50 under to $1.00 over.

National average corn and soybean basis is collapsing on futures price strength as Fund traders buy into technical price bottoms and cash traders remain less price supportive. Cash grain markets will be less sensitive to futures movement as old crop inventories move out of grower hands and into the market.

A little town’s big dairy East Germany farm looks to expand acreage, continue in industry

DIERA, Saxony, Germany – In an area once ravaged by World War II in East Germany is a ourishing dairy farm.

Milchhof Diera KG is owned and operated by second-generation family members Torsten Schlunke, Marko Schlunke and Axel Rühle. The farm milks 1,570 cows in the small town of Diera, Saxony, Germany.

Torsten is the farm’s herd manager; Marko is the managing director, and Rühle manages the feeding aspect. The farm operates as a limited liability partnership and employs 27 in-

dividuals.

Until 1990, every farm in the area was a part of a cooperative.

“When the wall came down, all the laws about ground and so on became obsolete,” Torsten said. “The ground had to be given back from the cooperative to the former owners before the Second World War.” Three families, including the family of Torsten’s father, bought all the cows from the cooperative and traveled door to door to secure land for rent.

The original dairy was started with 800 cows.

“Because the ground, as well where the barn was standing, had to be given back to the former owners, they decided

The original herd was comprised of Schwarzbuntes Milchrind der DDR (SMR), a milk-emphasized dual-purpose breed. The SMR was based on a three-breed cross of native East German Black and White, Danish Jersey and Canadian Holstein-Friesian.

Now, 1,470 Holsteins and 100 Jerseys are milked three times a day in a 50-stall rotary parlor. The milking herd is housed in freestall barns.

Days at Milchhof Diera

KG begin at 4 a.m. when the rst cows are milked. Then, milking occurs again at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The employees at the farm work a three-shift system. The morning shift is from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m.; evening shift is from 2 p.m. to midnight, and the third shift is off. Starting on Tuesday, an employee can expect to work seven days of the morning shift followed by three days off. Then, the evening shift begins for seven days followed by four days off.

“The system is quite popular in bigger farms because the workers can plan their whole

year on the rst of January,” Torsten said.

Two employees manage calving while one employee oversees milking fresh cows and feeding the calves. Two people manage the youngstock; a herdswoman is responsible for A.I., treating sick cows and managing the mastitis group.

acres. Of that, 618 acres are devoted to grassland. The remaining acreage is rotated with a neighboring farmer.

“We get the [865 acres of corn] and the straw; they get the slurry,” Torsten said.

Torsten said many farms in Germany are not specialized and have a cash crop enterprise and a dairy operation under one company.

“We are an individual case with just dairy farming,” Torsten said.

The milking herd is fed a ration of corn, grass silage, alfalfa, dry fodder hay, sugar beet pulp and brewers grain.

Every day, 113,600 pounds of milk is delivered to Müller, a large creamery in the area where the milk is further processed. Around 114 pounds of milk is sold daily via an automat system to local residents.

“The standing of farmers in a consumer’s point of view is getting to be a bigger issue,” Torsten said. “We are trying to open our doors by selling raw milk off the farm via an automat. But the people, in general, are getting less connected to the farms.”

Torsten said because of their farm’s location they no longer spray manure slurry on Sundays to avoid any potential problems with local residents.

Despite the woes of the milk market, Torsten said the farm’s income supports himself and his two partners in the dairy.

When making breeding decisions, Torsten said they focus on selecting bulls with a positive breeding value for protein and fat, exterior, calving ease, fertility and somatic cell count.

“The main goal is a commercial cow with no big problems,” Torsten said. “Our average lifetime production per cow is 35,000 kg [of milk]. My goal

is 40,000 kg.”

Torsten said in addition to breeding using A.I., the farm also utilizes embryonic transfers.

The farm has access to equipment dealers – DeLaval, BouMatic, Westfalia and Fullwood – and is further supported by two mechanics who work on the farm.

“We have a contract and in less than two hours, we have support by a mechanic from Fullwood,” Torsten said. “… A local electrical company is also supporting us and are available 365 days in the year.”

Torsten said the next closest farm is 9 miles away.

“Most of [the other farms] have a similar history with one big difference,” he said. “A lot of farms stayed in a cooperative. But, the size did not change.”

Land prices in the area are increasing, Torsten said.

“Land is owned by people who are not connected to agriculture,” he said.

“As a young farmer, you don’t have a chance anymore to start a farm or buy land.”

Even so, Torsten said they are investing in a 2,470-acre farm 19 miles away.

“We need more ground to stay stable in the long-term and crop more [corn] and grass to get more independence,” Torsten said.

Despite the competition for land and the risk of the milk market, Torsten said dairy farming is his ideal occupation.

“The daily challenge, and even though we milk 365 days in a year, not every day looks the same,” he said of what he likes about dairy farming.

HARMONY, Minn. – With the local county fair in full swing and chores to complete at home, Jim and Randi Wingert and their seven children divided and conquered July 19.

“It’s organized chaos, but we wouldn’t have it any other way,” Randi said. “We have to double team to make it all happen.”

Jim and Randi, and their children – Coltin, 18, Morgan, 16, Claytin, 11, Mady, 10, Maggie, 8, Melony, 8, and

Martina, 6 – milk 80 cows in Fillmore County near Harmony, Minn.

On the morning of July 19, Coltin and Morgan were up at 5 a.m., washing, bedding and feeding their family’s six milking cows and eight heifers at the Fillmore County Fair in Preston, Minn.

Later in the day, the family would show as part of the county’s 4-H dairy competition.

“I met the oldest two kids at the fairgrounds with the youngest ve at 6:30 a.m. to get ready for the show,” Randi said.

The day kept moving along at the fairgrounds, but also at home. Jim nished the rst milking shift, and then scraped the freestall barn and fed the cows and calves.

“It’s different without the kids here,” Jim said. “When Morgan or Coltin are here to help scrape or milk, it cuts off an hour off of chores.”

Mady agreed.

“Usually Coltin scrapes and feeds cows while Mom and Dad milk,” she said.

“Claytin feeds the heifers. I feed calves. Morgan washes and walks her show cows while Martina, Maggie and Melony help Mom and Dad.” Although Jim was alone in completing farm chores, he enjoyed his time.

“It was peaceful; it just took more time,” Jim said. “[Morning chores] went well.

It’s just more to do when you are alone.”

Back at the dairy show, Randi ran back and fourth from watching the show to helping the next kid get their animal ready.

“Sometimes you miss

things, but you can only be in so many places at once,” Randi said.

In the very rst class, Madi and Claytin received champion and reserve champion junior calf, respectively.

The success continued throughout the day. The Wingerts completed the show with many champion and reserve champion titles, including champion and reserve champion senior showmanship and outstanding dairy member.

“We had top three with three different breeds,” Coltin said.

Morgan relished in her successes of the day, standing rst place in the state fair line up and rst place in showmanship.

“I have been inspired by people and their cows who have done really well here,” Morgan said. “Now, we have nally become the people we would have looked up to when we were younger.”

Randi agreed.

“This is a lot of hard work that nally paid off,” she said.

“I am really proud of them.

They have had a great group of people to learn from in Fillmore County. I am most proud of showmanship. You can’t buy showmanship, you earn

While the Wingerts had 12 animals showcased in 4-H, they had two more in the string.

“We have 14 head here, but the two Ayrshire calves are the twins’ [Melony and Maggie] calves, and they aren’t old enough to show for 4-H,” Randi said. “They will show on Saturday in the open class show.”

Following the 4-H dairy show, Morgan and Coltin milked the six milking cows while Randi got a special treat from her van – a cow birthday cake for the birthday girls.

July 19 was Melony and Maggie’s 8th birthday. With a tradition to celebrate during the county fair, this year their birthday landed on show day.

“I stayed up all night making the cake, but it was worth it,” Randi said.

At 3:30 p.m., seven of the Wingerts set up for milking.

Melony and Maggie lled iodine bottles while Randi, Jim and Mady set up the milkers.

Outside, Claytin started with his favorite chore, feeding the heifers grain.

As Maggie, Melony, Mady and Randi started milking, Martina brought the next cow into the parlor. At the same time, Jim went to clean

the freestall barn.

After milking, Mady fed the calves milk while the rest of the family cleaned the parlor.

“We all have our own job,” Mady said. “When someone is gone, we just have to ll in for them.”

Back at the fair, Morgan and Coltin kept an eye on the show cows.

“I know the kids are safe at the fair,” Randi said. “People in Fillmore County are like a second family. People are always watching out for them.”

During this time, Morgan

and Coltin also ran the milking parlor at the fair.

“We have ran the parlor for three years now,” Coltin said.

“We turn on the pump and set up the milkers for cows at the fair.”

By 6:30 p.m., the ve youngest Wingerts were ready for bed.

“It was an early morning and a long day for them,” Randi said. “They need to head to bed a little early tonight.”

At 10:30 p.m., Randi and Jim headed to the farm to milk for the third time. Randi milked while Jim scraped the

Alfalfa with grass a good combination Higher yield, more milk

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Do not overlook grasses as part of your farm’s forage base. Grasses can perform well when seeded with alfalfa, according to Ev Thomas, an agronomist with Oak Point Agronomics of Hammond, N.Y. Thomas talked about the obstacles and opportunities of planting alfalfa and alfalfa-grass mixtures during the recent Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference in Dubuque, Iowa, in June.

Growing a forage grass with alfalfa is not popular across the nation.

Thomas said only about 10 percent of the alfalfa acreage in the United States includes grass.

“However, about 85 percent of the alfalfa in New York is seeded with a cool-season grass,” he said. “That percentage is similar in New England and eastern Canada.”

Tall fescue is the grass of choice on most farms and is used in 20-30 percent of the alfalfa-grass seedings.

However, Thomas said meadow fescue might be a better choice due to its higher quality.

Why is an alfalfa-grass mix so popular in parts of the northeast and Canada? Thomas said because of the soil, weather and tradition.

The Northeast and eastern Canada have soils more variable than those in the Midwest. That variability is part-

ly due to the activity of glaciers that moved and mixed the soil. Thomas said soil variability exists within individual elds, and it can affect drainage, pH and fertility so that grass grows better than alfalfa.

The climate is another factor that favors grass in the Northeast. The area’s cold winters affect alfalfa more than it does most species of grass.

“Farmers in the Northeast have seeded alfalfa-grass for generations,” Thomas said.

Farmers who have experienced growing forage grasses know that grass is different, Thomas said.

“Grass harvested at the boot stage has much higher digestibility than conventional alfalfa varieties at the late bud stage,” he said. “However, grass digestibility declines twice as fast. That means timing is everything. When you see the head, quality is dead.”

Complicating things is the difference in heading date among grass species. There can even be heading date differences among varieties within a species.

Some farmers do not pay much attention to the grass seed they buy. Instead, said Thomas, they buy seed that is affordable.

Thomas said there is a place for straight alfalfa. That is where conditions are ne for the legume.

“But where eld conditions aren’t ideal for alfalfa, consider alfalfagrass,” he said.

A relative newcomer, meadow fescue is increasing in popularity. In fact, Thomas called meadow fescue the top

choice for alfalfa-grass seedings.

That is in large part due to meadow fescue’s better digestibility. Thomas said research conducted at Cornell University found 10 percent higher digestibility than any other forage grass and at a wide range of maturity.

Two things have inuenced the way grass species are selected, Thomas said. First, there is more knowledge about the ber digestibility of grasses.

Second, there is more of a focus on digestibility.

recently to meadow fescue In addition, alfalfa-grass stands are being more intensively managed.

Thomas said some of the old standbys, such as smooth bromegrass, do not tolerate 30-day cutting schedules.

An alfalfa-grass mix almost always yields more than straight alfalfa, Thomas said.

“But a major challenge is getting the right percentage of grass in the

stand,” he said. “Often, this depends on the weather soon after seeding.

More rain equals more grass.”

Getting the right percentage of grass also depends on the species.

Thomas said Cornell University research suggests even one pound per acre of orchardgrass may be too much.

Generally, the ideal stand is 2/3 alfalfa and 1/3 grass. That percentage of alfalfa provides adequate nitrogen for the grasses. As a stand ages, the percentage of grass will increase.

“The grass species is critical,” Thomas said. “As little as 10 percent meadow fescue in the stand is enough to make a signicant quality difference.”

Grasses are much more efcient than alfalfa at taking up nutrients, even though alfalfa plants have long tap roots that reach deep into the soil.

Grasses’ root systems, though shallow, are denser.

Another plus for grasses is that some of them can take up and accumulate soil potassium. That can be the case when potassium levels are low enough to starve alfalfa, Thomas said.

He recommended not seeding alfalfa with grass if the soil tests low or medium in potassium When it comes to mowing or chopping alfalfa-grass, be sure to leave stubble at four inches or taller, Thomas said.

Thomas said in cool-season areas like the Northeast and Upper Midwest, alfalfa-grass yields more and produces more milk than straight alfalfa.

Silage makes a ne home for molds, mycotoxins

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Silage can make a ne home for molds because ensiled feeds have features that favor mold growth and the mycotoxins molds produce.

Paige Gott, ruminant technical manager with Biomin America, Inc., Overland Park, Kan., discussed molds and mycotoxins during the Iowa-Wisconsin Silage Conference June 21, at Dubuque, Iowa.

“Many molds are capable of contaminating crops and feedstuffs, but relatively few are known to produce secondary metabolites called mycotoxins that can negatively impact animal health and performance,” Gott said.

She said dairy cattle and other ruminants are thought to be less sensitive to the damaging effects of mycotoxins.

Nevertheless, ruminants can be affected.

Cattle fertility can be harmed. Signs of this can include irregular heats, low conception rates and abortions. In heifers that have not reached puberty, mammary glands can develop early. In bulls, sperm production and quality can be affected.

An animal’s immune system can be suppressed by eating feed containing certain mycotoxins. As a result, vaccines might not be as effective.

Kidney and liver health can be compromised, Gott said. Kidneys and livers can weigh more and have lesions.

Then there are gastrointestinal effects. These might include impaired rumen function, a change in rumen pH, ketosis, diarrhea and spit-up cuds. Gott called spit-up cuds a classic sign of vomatoxin.

Transition animals tend to be at higher risk from mycotoxins, Gott said. Those cattle are under stress from being moved to new pens, calving and the start of their lactations.

Overcrowding and warm, humid weather can also be stress factors.

Even though comparatively few molds create dangerous compounds, more than 400 mycotoxins have been identied, Gott said.

“Relatively few are well understood when it comes to their potential negative effects in cattle,” she said. “Some of the most studied and frequently detected mycotoxins include aatoxins, deoxynivalenol (also known as vomatoxin) and zearalenone.”

Most mycotoxin research has been done on cereal grains and food, Gott said. But many mycotoxins are also found in forages. And, the high moisture content of ensiled feed can result in complex mycotoxin proles beyond what are found in other commodities.

Molds that create mycotoxins do so in the eld before the feed is harvested or after harvesting when the feed is in storage. Three types of molds are associated with mycotoxins.

Fusarium molds produce mycotoxins while crops are still in the elds. Aspergillus and penicillium molds create their toxins while the feed is being stored.

Many factors inuence the growth of molds and their production of mycotoxins. Gott said these include the temperature of the feed, its moisture content, oxygen level, pH and any damage to the crop.

It is difcult to prevent molds and mycotoxins. The weather is beyond the control of people. But, many mycotoxins are formed before feed is harvested and persist during feed out.

“Poor silage management, including improper moisture content at harvest, inadequate packing density and poor feed out practices increase the risk of storage molds and mycotoxins,” Gott said.

Good silage management, Gott said, involves keeping oxygen away from the feed. It is important to seal silos well.

Seeing mold in silage does not necessarily mean mycotoxins have been formed.

“But, it does indicate an increased risk for contamination and can reduce feed quality and palatability even if toxins do not exist,” Gott said.

Mold growth in silage can be uneven. And, the toxins could have formed before the feed was ensiled.

Most commercial laboratories do not screen for the presence of most of the molds that produce mycotoxins, Gott said. She said the Food and Drug Administration has not approved any feed additives for the control of mycotoxins.

Binders can work, depending on the particular mycotoxin that is a problem. These binders sometimes contain bentonite, a type of clay. The clay binds itself to the mycotoxin and keeps it from being absorbed into an animal’s bloodstream.

Since many factors can affect mold growth and mycotoxin production, proper silage management is needed.

“Best-management practices cannot guarantee the prevention of mycotoxin development,” Gott said. “Therefore, a comprehensive mycotoxin risk management program is essential.”

We made balage out of our barley July 11, and had 115 bales out of 19 acres. The oats are a couple weeks away yet. The only corn RAINFALL not tasseled is the stuff I TOTALS planted after we harvested Last 2 the rye. The soybeans Weeks look really good and clean considering there was a couple weeks we didn’t get in the field. Later this week, we should start third crop hay. We sprayed for leafhoppers 10 days ago.

They were bad around Since April 25 here. My sedan grass is 40 inches tall and I want 15.99” to cut it. There is a lot of road ditch hay down around here.

It’s getting dry. We’ve been getting missed by a bunch of rain. Friday (July 20) we got about two-tehnths of an inch. RAINFALL On the sand, it doesn’t TOTALS take long to get pretty Last 2 dry. We’ve finished up Weeks about 40 acres of sudex for heifers. It was kind of light; we put some fertilizer on it. We’ve 1.2” sprayed the third crop for bugs. We need rain here now for it to start setting ears.

We are trying to get third crop hay done.

We started yesterday RAINFALL (July 23). There are a few TOTALS guys done with third, Last 2 but a lot have to make Weeks it yet. We had to spray it for weevils. The corn looks good. In the area, the oats combining has started; a lot of the oats were lodged. There is a lot of spraying going on. Farmers are spraying Since April 25 their soybeans and 22.7” there are helicopters spraying fungicide on the corn. The corn is amazing; the crops look awesome around here.

We finally dried out some during the past few weeks, so our soils aren’t quite so waterlogged. Our third RAINFALL crop of alfalfa looks TOTALS good and we will start Last 2 cutting it in a few days. The highs have been in the 80’s and the lows in Since April 25 the 60’s, which is ideal 23.8” for growing corn. We haven’t seen any aphid pressure on our soybeans.

DAIRY CALENDAR The UMN Extension 2018 Summer Field Days are scheduled at locations across Minnesota. The eld days allow people to visit operations that have been successful, learn about each dairy operation’s features, and ask questions and learn from others. The Stearns County Dairy Field Day will feature a unique farm that emphasizes cost savings, effective labor use, and a strong family partnership. The Borgerdings milk 160 cows in addition to running 1,100 acres. This land includes 250 acres of pasture for grazing. The rest of the land is used for feed and cash crops, including edible beans. The Borgerdings use biological farming to maximize soil health and fertility. Cows are primarily bred to calve in the fall, and the farm uses Fleckvieh and Holstein genetics to produce a cow that is suitable for freestall and pasture conditions. Joe and his family have used innovative thinking to achieve cost savings while also meeting farm goals. Some of these innovations include unique approaches to drainage, ventilation, and feed management. Joe, Toni, and their two sons, Danny and Tommy, share management responsibilities on the farm and are currently in the process of farm transition. The farm also has 6 part time employees that assist with milking, feeding, and other duties. Over the years, more than 800 people have graduated from the Minnesota-region Farm Beginnings course.

Graduates are involved in a wide range of agricultural enterprises, including grass-based livestock, organic vegetables, Community Supported Agriculture and specialty products.

Two top producers will share their cattle handling strategies in their systems during the 2018 Summer I-29 Moo University Dairy Tour, Implementing Best Management Practices, on Aug. 3. Topics will cover euthanasia, low-stress handling, non-ambulatory animal handling, biosecurity planning and newborn calf care. A national workshop that will help America raise its next generation of farmers and ranchers has been scheduled for Aug. 14-15 in Marsheld, Wis. Fill a gallon bag halfway with ice. Add sea salt to the bag.Pour half and half, sugar and vanilla into the quart freezer bag and seal. Place the quart bag in the gallon bag, seal the gallon bag, and shake for 5 minutes. Remove the smaller bag and rinse off the salt. Scoop ice cream out of the bag and enjoy!

Quick and easy alfredo sauce 1/2 cup butter 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese 2 tsps. garlic powder 2 cups milk

6 oz. grated Parmesan cheese 1/8 tsp. ground black pepper

Melt butter in a medium, non-stick saucepan over medium heat. Add cream cheese and garlic powder, stirring with wire whisk until smooth. Add milk, a little at a time, whisking to smooth out lumps. Stir in Parmesan and pepper.

Remove from heat when sauce reaches desired consistency. Sauce will thicken rapidly, thin with milk if cooked too long.
