Once all of the trees have matured, Prindle hopes to harvest and possibly sell his product to Hammons, who purchases walnuts from commercial growers across the Midwest.

In addition to the walnuts, Prindle is in the nal stages of transitioning the family farm to organic production. The milk will be sold as certied organic in November and the elds will be considered organic during next year’s Turn to PRINDLE | Page 7

Prindle began making the grafts in 2013, and continues to graft to mature trees each year. Cuttings are fused to mature trees with an adhesive and reinforced with several layers of tape.

By fusing improved tree varieties to his growing trees, Prindle is improving the quality of the growing walnuts.

Unimproved walnut varieties are sold for $14 per hundredweight. Improved varieties, however, are sold at higher value.

While working in Missouri, Prindle learned a great deal of information that benets his orchard endeavors today.

Under the teachings of Professor Andy Thomas at the University of Missouri, Prindle learned the differences amongst tree varieties and the practice of grafting to improve established trees.

“Grafting is taking a cutting of one variety and healing its stem to a cut on an established tree,” Prindle said. “It takes four weeks to heal a graft and a couple years to make a strong grafted union.”

ALMA CENTER, Wis. – Amongst the elds of corn, soybeans and alfalfa across Jackson County, one farmer is challenging the norm with the emergence of a new crop. Jordan Prindle, a fth generation dairy farmer in Alma Center, Wis., tends to 500 black walnut trees in the pastures of his family’s 130-cow farm.

Prindle’s interest in black walnut production stems from his education at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. After graduating with degrees in forestry and business, he moved to Stockton, Mo., where he became the caretaker for black walnut orchard Hammons Product Company’s ShoNeff Farms.

While working for Hammons, Prindle cared for the trees. Underneath the trees, beef cattle owned by a farmer renting the pasture grazed daily. As Prindle continued learning and working at the orchard, he saw the opportunity to use the same practice on his farm back home.

“My dad had grazed for a long time here so we were already working along those lines,” Prindle said. “I knew I wanted to do something that combined agriculture and forestry, and saw the opportunity to do that right here at home.”

To date, Prindle has planted 500 trees over the course of several years throughout eight acres of pasture.

Some are grown from seeds while others are planted from nursery seedlings.

As it takes approximately ve years before a tree produces walnuts, Prindle is slowly beginning to see the fruit of his labor.

Organic Advisory Task Force application deadline extended Forms for 12 remaining positions due July 27

The Minnesota Legislature reauthorized the Minnesota Organic Advisory Task Force (OATF) during the 2016 legislative session and 12 positions remain open for appointment. The application deadline has been extended to July 27, 2016.

The OATF advises the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the University of Minnesota (U of M) about policies and programs that will improve organic agriculture in the state. The task force must meet at least twice per year and members serve three-year terms. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Minnesota’s organic agricultural sector.

“We are proud of Minnesota’s place as a longtime leader in organic agriculture,” said MDA Commissioner Dave Frederickson. “We need task force members who will speak up about ways the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the U of M can help Minnesota’s organic sector continue to grow and thrive.”

Four ways to get quality silage

The rst rule of silage: what goes in dictates what comes out. Variety selection, pre-harvest management and harvest timing are major determinants of the potential quality of the resulting silage. Then cutting and chopping, inoculant selection, lling and packing, covering and feedout management are all important to the quantity of silage available to feed and the ultimate quality of the forage fed, notes Bob Charley, Ph.D., forage products manager.

“Forages typically make up 40 to 60 percent of the ration on a dry matter (DM) basis,” Dr. Charley says. “All other ingredients in the ration should then be determined based on the quality of this main component. It’s much easier, cheaper and more effective to balance rations when producers start with highquality silage in the rst place.”

A solid game plan and checklist can help producers make this most of this critical harvest period. Key factors to include are: 1. Harvest timing • Harvest at the optimal stage of maturity • Harvest at (or wilt to, if necessary) the optimum plant moisture level 2. Cutting and chopping • Choose the correct cutting height. For areas that experienced drought, consider raising the cutter bar to 18 inches or more if nitrates are a concern • Select the optimum theoretical length of chop (TLC) • Remember corn harvested for silage at higher than 32 percent DM should be processed to maximize starch utilization by the animal 3. Inoculant • Select an inoculant proven to deliver the results you need, specically fermentation enhancement and/ or aerobic stability • Store inoculant correctly (see product label) and follow recommended mixing and application instructions • Consider using a low-volume applicator with an insulated tank, if appropriate • Be sure to sanitize and correctly calibrate the applicator • Keep the inoculant cool after rehydration 4. Filling and packing • Fill quickly • Use progressive wedges in bunkers and piles, with maximum 6-inch ll layers • Ensure the packing weight is adequate for the delivery rate. A rule of thumb is: delivery rate (tons per hour) times 800 equals packing weight required (in pounds) • Calculate packing time required with the machinery available • Target packing density of at least 45 pounds fresh weight per cubic foot 8 Seal the silo quickly and effectively “Inoculant selection allows producers to address specic challenges they may have experienced in the past,” Dr. Charley says. “For example, using the lactic acid bacteria Pediococcus pentosaceus 12455 — fueled by sugars generated by high activity enzymes — promotes a fast, efcient front-end fermentation.

Promoting a fast pH drop can also reduce initial yeast growth, and yeasts are the major cause of silage heating.”

Specic inoculants can benet producers with a history of spoilage losses too. With spoilage losses, the key is to prevent or delay the growth of yeasts that grow when oxygen gets into the silage at feedout.

The high dose rate Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 is reviewed by the FDA and allowed to claim efcacy in preventing the growth of yeasts and molds in silages and HMC. For forages prone to spoilage — like drier haylage, corn and cereal silages, HMC and cereal grains, baleage and baled hay — producers should consider a combination of P. pentosaceus 12455 plus enzymes with the high level L. buchneri 40788. This offers the benets of both a fast, efcient fermentation and less heating and spoilage at feedout.

“Time invested now in planning and preparation for the silage season can pay off big time later in the year with lower feed costs and higher performance,” Dr. Charley says. “In silage production, there is no substitute for attention to the basics.”

The European Commission (EC) unveiled a €500 million euro-aid package ($US 553.6 million) today to support Ànancially struggling dairy producers across the current 28-member countries.

The latest package includes €150 million directed toward subsidizing voluntary reductions in milk output EU-wide and €350 million in conditional aid. The conditional aid package will be deÀned and implemented at the member-state level.

Member states are allowed to match EU funds, which provides for the potential doubling of aid to some dairy farmers. The EC also authorized expanding existing public storage subsidies and extending intervention (price support program) for skim milk powder (SMP) through February 2017.

However, the volume cap for SMP purchased at a Àxed price remains at 350,000 metric tons (MT) until Dec. 31, 2016. Today’s Ànancial package is the third provided since the European Union abolished its 30-year milk quota policy in April 2015. The EC noted that in less than a year, it has provided more than €1 billion to Ànancially strapped farmers at a time of signiÀcant budgetary pressures. The EC’s press release’s concluding statement, “This is a very robust response on the part of the Commission nd is a very strong statement of support for European famers,” causes one to wonder whether the EC is sending a signal to dairy producers that the European Union’s Ànancial well for dairy producers is drying up.

Whole milk powder (WMP) led the advancers with a 1.9% increase, followed by rennet casein and anhydrous milk fat (AMF), up 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively. WMP averaged $2,078/MT for the six-month contract period from August 2016 through January 2017. Deliveries for August posted a 14% decline vs. the previous event.

Subsequent contract periods posted gains, with the highest price for regular-New Zealand WMP at $2,100/MT for January 2017 delivery. WMP prices showed a gradual $100/ MT price increase over the next six months. Skim milk powder (SMP) prices retreated, with nearby deliveries for August (Contract 1) falling 0.3% after the previous auction’s 8.5% increase. Fonterra’s low-heat and medium- heat SMP for September delivery closed at $1,890/MT. Medium-heat SMP from European dairy cooperative Arla settled $5 lower at $1,885/ MT. Monthly average contract prices through January 2017 closed within a narrow range of $1,895 to $1958/MT GDT butter prices fell 5% vs. the previous event, and all contracts, except Contract 6 (January 2017), were lower. Prices ranged from a low of $2,610/MT in September to a high of $3,015/MT in August, which was $150 less than the prior auction’s delivery price for August. Contract butter prices rose steadily from September through January 2017, closing at $2,905/MT. The GDT average Cheddar cheese price settled at $2,886/MT, down 1.1% from the July 5 auction. Trading was limited in contracts 2 through 4 (September through November). The average Cheddar cheese price was heavily inÁuenced by the September contract settlement of $3,266/MT, and subsequent October and November contracts closed at $2,817/MT and $2,782/ MT, respectively, reÁecting a downward trend in prices compared to WMP and butter where later contracts closed higher.

July 20 - BREXIT Ripple Effect Could Impact Global Cheese

Global markets are just starting to settle down after

the Brexit turmoil of a few weeks ago. However, as Great Britain’s newest Prime Minister Theresa May embarks on her Àrst trip to Germany and France to discuss the United Kingdom’s (UK) exit from the European Union, trade could cut both ways as the European Union and UK navigate their new relationship going forward. Consider the disorder that occurred after Russia discontinued purchases of dairy products from Western countries in 2014. Prior to the change, European cheese manufacturers could expect to export between 200,000 and 250,000 metric tons (MT) of cheese a year to Russia, the EU’s largest export destination through 2014. So why is BREXIT signiÀcant to European cheese trade going forward? The UK imports 400,000 to 470,000 MT of cheese from other European countries. In other words, the UK imports almost twice what Russia did prior to the embargo. Given the UK’s current level of cheese production, 418,000 MT in 2015, according to Eurostat, it is unlikely producers there will be able to double output to satisfy internal demand. Ireland and France, which together represent nearly half of the UK’s annual cheese imports, have a lot at stake as new trade negotiations take place. Just as dairy markets appear to be leveling out, with the lows possibly in the rearview mirror for this downturn, the start of Brexit negotiations could get very interesting for those in the European dairy industry. An upheaval in European cheese trading could have a rather signiÀcant ripple effect on global dairy markets down the road. For now, New Zealand and the United States are interested observers of what is about to unfold.

45 cows, 300 acres We got a lot of rain, but when I haul manure every day I can go wherever I want. There are fields of rye in the area that are swathed. I would say I’ll be cutting oats in 10 days and hay in two weeks. Near Menahga they are going after second crop hay and cutting oatlage. The corn is above shoulder high and by Friday or Saturday should be tasseled. The canola is all bloomed out.

We were 12 miles away from the Watkins tornado. We had some wind damage from one of the recent storms.

The wheat isn’t too far off. There will be a lot of small grain cut later this month. We plan to start cutting third cutting hay on July 25. The corn in the area looks really good and most of it is tasseled. The soybeans are really growing and are canopied.

The TOTALS soybeans are 1-foot high Last 3 to knee high. We finished Weeks second crop of old alfalfa today. The second crop of new seeding needs a week or two yet.

We are perfect with moisture right now. We had strong winds with the recent storms, which goose-necked some of the corn. We finished our third crop of hay on Friday.

We cut Tuesday and the chopped on Thursday and wet baled on Friday.

The soybeans are nearly waist high and the corn is all tasseled, except for the last 90 acres we planted.

The small grain is really close. We didn’t make any meadow hay; hopefully we can get that done in the next week.

Some people chopped second crop this weekend, and I’ll start later this week.

The corn looks OK. For people who had to replant, corn is 1 foot tall. Those who didn’t replant, are at 3 feet.

The alfalfa looks to be a little less in yield but the quality is definitely there. We have had a ton of rain. We got 8 inches in one night during a really bad storm. Major roads are shut down, the National Guard has been in the area and our new seeding alfalfa fields are totally washed out.

We probably won’t have the roads fixed until December – it’s really bad.

We are getting rain right now, which was much needed.

Corn is looking good and started tasseling over the weekend. I am in the middle of third crop hay with about half of it off and complete.

I plan to have the rest off by the weekend. Our yields have been perfect. The quality has been phenomenal and the third crop is one of the best I’ve seen since I’ve been home.

We had some problems with leafhoppers on second crop but only had to spray on the new seeding, so I got lucky.

It’s never easy but we’ve been lucky with the timing of the rains for harvesting and growing of crops this year.

We just got done with second crop hay, and it really yielded a lot. The corn is just starting to tassel right now and is standing over our heads. The soybeans are thigh high. We haven’t had any problems with insects at all in the crops. We keep getting rain and heat so everything is really taking off. It’s warm out right now and forecasted to get even warmer the next couple of days. It’s been hard to get hay made with the rain – it took us almost a week to get done with second crop since we got small amounts of rain every other day.

Everything is growing well; everything is looking pretty green. I haven’t been out in the corn for a few days, but it is nearing 8 feet tall and tasseling. We are just getting ready to cut third crop hay in the next week. There is a call for some rain in the coming days so that might hold us back a little bit. There haven’t been any problems with insects and while the second crop wasn’t quite as thick as the first crop, it was still pretty close. We’ve had nice amounts of rainfall, which has helped with the growth of crops.

If our weather continues, I think we are in for an excellent crop.

We only have received a halfinch of rain over the last two weeks, but we’ve had some cooler, good growing days.

We have had days with no sun and heavy moisture, it has been very hard to get in and hay baled. The corn is thriving and the is as high as it can be.

Corn has nice ears setting on it with good size and color. There might be a sulfur deficiency as the leaves on the lower stalk are tending to yellow.We seem to be escaping bugs and that would be harming our crops. Wheat is beginning to be combined and oats will be soon.

Making new connections

Ridgewater launches ag alumni association

WILLMAR, Minn. – After nearly 50 years with over 2,300 graduates, Ridgewater College is launching its own ag alumni association.

“This has been a long time coming,” said Kim Lippert, the ag department chair for Ridgewater College.

“The timing was right to do this.”

To kick-start the ag alumni association, Ridgewater will be hosting an alumni reunion in conjunction with the retirement of Jere Rambow at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 19 in the Willmar Conference Center in Willmar, Minn.

“It’s going to be a great way to get our alumni who all have a passion for agriculture together in the same room and share their stories and business contacts,” said Sarah Roerick, a 1996 graduate of the college who milks 90 cows with her husband, Dan, near Burtrum, Minn.

The idea to start an alumni association began in 2009 when Brant Groen and Paul Kobernusz retired.

“During their party, we surveyed the graduates there to get a sense of how interested they would be in starting an alumni association,” Lippert said. “We had quite a strong response.”

But they did not push forward with it until Rambow’s retirement this May. “It felt like we were long overdue to launch an alumni association, and

this helped resurrect the idea,” Lippert said. “I called several graduates this spring to throw the idea out there, and it has lead to a very active committee.”

Roerick was one of those committee members.

“I was really excited about this starting up,” she said.

The main focus of the alumni association is making connections between the graduates and the current students.

“We’re doing this for the next generation. We want to support the ag department at the college to get the students the hands on technology they need,” Roerick said. “We can do things like that as alumni by opening up our farms for learning opportunities through the college, take part in eld days or raising funds for programs like the Postsecondary Ag Student (PAS) organization in the college.”

It will also provide students a network of people to tap into when looking for internships or jobs after they graduate.

“These students are so driven and energetic about what they want to do and where they want to go,” Roerick said. “We want to connect them with the high quality businesses our alumni work with in the ag industry. It’s a good pool of prospective employers for the students to tap into.”

Current students will not be the only beneciaries of the program.

Alumni will be, too.

“We’re working together to build a network of support for alumni and agri-business in Minnesota and beyond,” Roerick said. “There are so many contacts in every eld of the ag industry at our ngertips.”

Lippert agreed.

“An association like this will help keep people connected,” she said.

For 2012 graduate Hannah Molitor, having that expanded network was

the selling point for her to consider becoming a member of the alumni association.

“Having a strong network is so important in this industry,” said Molitor who milks 330 cows near St. Cloud, Minn. “This is going to be a very good thing for this department and the future students. I walked out of the school with an appreciation for what it gave me. This will be a way for me to give back. ” One way Molitor hopes to use the expanded network is by connecting farmers who are exiting the industry that do not have a next generation to take over the farm with beginning farmers looking for a place to start.

“That’s my goal,” she said.

To become a member, alumni of the college update their mailing address and contact information, and pay a $25 fee.

“It’s really easy and reasonable,” Roerick said. “You can sign up to be a member at any time and can be as active as you want.”

Although there are still a lot more details to iron out, Roerick is excited

30 chosen for MARL Class IX Thirty individuals have been selected to participate in the Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership Program, Class IX. MARL is a dynamic two-year educational experience featuring nine, three-day in-state seminars, a six-day national study seminar and a two-week international study seminar.

Each class is comprised of 30 participants. Two thirds are agricultural producers and the other third are people involved in agribusiness or rural leadership positions.

“The quality of applicants to the MARL Program continues to be high,” said Executive Director Olga Reuvekamp. “The board had a very difcult task in selecting MARL Class IX participants,” she said. “The program really develops the leadership qualities of the participants, and these are the individuals who are making a difference in agriculture today.”

Outgoing MARL Board Chair Cam Fanfulik said the program is important to agriculture’s future in the state. “It is well known that agriculture and rural Minnesota face multiple challenges, and it’s vitally important that we invest in ourselves to effectively meet these tests.

“As the demographics change, we need to ask: ‘Who will be our new leaders? Who will provide that strong rural voice? What will the future of rural

Minnesota look like?’ MARL addresses those questions through its stated mission: Develop those necessary skills so that ag and rural leaders can maximize their impact across the local, state, national and international arenas.”

The MARL calendar is designed to accommodate the busy schedules of participants, with most activities occurring over the winter months. MARL Class IX will rst meet in November 2016.

People in the dairy community Marcella Kelzer passes away Marcella (Marcie) Madonna Kelzer, 56, of Randall, Minn. passed away peacefully at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn. after a valiant battle with Scleroderma. A Mass of Christian Burial for Marcie was Friday, July 1, at St. James Catholic Church in Randall, Minn.

Marcie was born on October 22, 1959 in Winona, Minn. to Edward and Evelyn (Schott) Miller. She was raised on a farm and graduated from Lewiston Public High School in 1978. Marcie attended the University of Minnesota in Waseca for child development. Marcie married John Kelzer on June 21, 1980 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waconia, Minn. They purchased a farm and moved to Randall, Minn. in 1981 where the family raised dairy and beef cattle.

Marcie loved the outdoors and enjoyed animals and nature. She loved taking care of the livestock on the farm, raising rabbits, riding the 4-wheeler, ice-skating, swimming, horseback riding, and gardening. She enjoyed traveling, particularly to Itasca State Park and Nebraska.

Aubrey awarded John Brandt Memorial Scholarship Taylor Aubrey, Dairy Science Master’s student at South Dakota State University (SDSU), has been awarded the 2016-2017 John Brandt Memorial Scholarship from the Land O’Lakes Foundation to support her graduate studies in Dairy Cattle Nutrition. The $25,000 memorial scholarship honoring the late John Brandt is awarded annually to graduate students who have shown exceptional aptitude in dairy, food science or agribusiness-related research. Aubrey is studying dairy cattle nutrition. The focus of her research is a 36-lactating Holstein cow trial examining the impact of two concentrated brewer’s grain yeast products fed at the same rates and supplemented in a total mixed ration. This research strives to improve milk quality and quantity, as well as increase feed efciency. FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative announces scholarship recipients FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative is proud to announce its 2016 scholarship winners. The cooperative has recently awarded over $23,000 in scholarships to 28 high school and collegiate students pursuing postsecondary education.
