Knisley returns to dairying after short hiatus

RICHMOND, Minn. – When Ryan Knisley sold his herd Feb. 12, 2018, he did not think he would nd his way back into the industry so soon.

“When I stopped milking, I went shing, helped my buddies put up hay and even tried my hand at carpentry,” Knisley said. “Deep down, I knew I wanted to get back into dairy.”

After a quick six-month leave, Knisley began milking cows Aug. 1, 2018, on a rented farm site near Richmond, Minn.

In a rental agreement with Gary Hentges, Knisley owns the 50-cow herd and all the milking equipment while Hentges owns the TMR mixer and continues farming the land. Then, Knisley purchases feed from Hentges.

Knisley knew Hentges previously.

“I knew Gary wanted to keep the barn running, so we talked,” Knisley said. “We walked through what he wanted out of the agreement and what I needed.”

Knisley purchased the milking herd and added a few springing heifers from his former herd.

Previously, Knisley milked a registered herd that gave a 95-pound tank average. In his new dairying venture, Knisley has placed a greater focus on genetics to reach that caliber of quality in his herd again.

“I couldn’t clean house when I bought the herd, so I’m rebuilding it to what I want knowing what I had,” Knisley said.

He diligently keeps up with his Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement Association records and culls cows with high somatic cell counts to reduce SCC by more than 200,000. If the

Knisley has worked with area dairy farmers to replace cattle with lesser quality genetics and health problems.

“I don’t babysit my herd,” Knisley said. “The cows either do the job or they’re out the door.”

The cattle that make up Knisley’s herd are built on high milk yield, strong components, good feet and legs, and a

sound udder.

In selecting bulls to bring out these traits, Knisley has seen his production climb from 60 pounds to 75 pounds per cow.

“I like to see cows give milk,” Knisley said. “When I walk in the barn and see the cattle in the stalls with nice and tight udders, that’s a big plus.”

Knisley arrives at the farm in the morning and works through the day completing routine chores. By mid-

day, he helps Hentges put up feed or repair equipment. Then, he begins evening chores at 2:45 p.m.

During the summer months, Knisley’s oldest son, Riley, 7, also helps on the farm.

“Riley likes to come to the farm and helps feed calves,” Knisley said.

For others, he suggests reaching out to retiring dairy farmers to see if similar opportunities exist. “There are guys willing to help you out. You just have to do it,� Knisley said. “Build those good relationships and know how to save money. People can be scared by the idea, but it’s manageable to rent, milk 40 to 50 cows, and make a living.�

Being back in the barn feels right for Knisley and he is well on his way to being the dairyman he always envisioned for himself. “It’ll take time, but I’m getting there,� he said.

Despite his short hiatus from dairying, Knisley believes a strong milking herd is built with good genetics, good feed and good management – a combination he has found at his new farm site.

When Knisley and Hentges formed an agreement, the dairy farmer made sure to create a setup that would work for both parties based on his previous experience renting a farm site and owning a herd.

The parties both wanted to have an agreement that was fair and could sustain Knisley’s dairying career in the long run. “Before, rent was going up and I couldn’t buy the place,� Knisley said. “And, with the good and the bad of the industry, I was getting burnt out.�

Knisley walked away from the rental agreement after milking at the farm site for eight years and previously working for the former dairy farmer of Paynesville, Minn.

Now, Knisley sees promise in his

current site for the remainder of his time in the industry. “Gary said I could milk here as long as I want. He doesn’t want to see it sit empty,� Knisley said. “The way I see it, I might never have to buy. If I could rent for 20 more years, that’ll take me to retirement.�

To facilitate long-term sustainability, Knisley has replaced drinking cups in the stalls as well as added fans throughout the barn. He has also worked with his nutritionist to incorporate baleage to the ration rather than haylage. “It’ll take time to get where I want to be, but these little things make a big difference,� Knisley said. “The cows are turning around and production is going in the right direction. Plus, milk prices keep rolling.�

Quality forages require quality resources Conservation practices paramount at Banner Ridge Farms

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The rolling hills of southwestern Wisconsin’s Grant County are home to Banner Ridge Farms, of Platteville, Wis., where water quality and conservation farming practices go hand-in-hand with operating a successful dairy farm.

The Water Matters Tour visited the farm June 25. The tour was sponsored by Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin Discovery Farms, the Wisconsin Counties Association and the Wisconsin Towns Associations.

Banner Ridge Farms is operated as a partnership between John and LuAnn Shea, and TJ and Katie Roth. The Sheas founded the farm in 1974 with 37 cows. TJ worked for them as a college student in 2007 and became a partner in the farm in 2015. Today, the milking herd consists of 425 cows.

“First and foremost, we are committed to cow comfort,” Katie said. “Animal care is very important to us. Environmental stewardship is very important as well. We’re not perfect, but we are always striving to do better.”

The farm’s water quality

is tested as part of their federal milk inspection. And, in 2015, a tank was installed in the parlor to collect waste water to be recycled for secondary use.

The dairy plans to recycle sand to further their environmental stewardship.

The milking herd is housed in a sand-bedded freestall barn built in 2015, and groups are formed taking production, age and reproductive status into consideration. The herd averages 93 pounds of milk per cow, per day with a 4.2% butterfat and 3.3% protein test.

“We are paid on a component basis, so we really focus on those numbers,” TJ said.

“Our goal is to reach seven pounds of combined fat and protein per cow.”

Nutrition plays a key factor in the success of the herd, and 11 diets are mixed and fed throughout the farm each day.

All of the forages fed on the farm are home-grown. Purchased feedstuffs include cottonseed, wet gluten, hominy, a protein mix, mineral and whey from a nearby cheese plant.

Banner Ridge Farms consists of 1,250 acres of crop ground, 500 owned and 750 rented. The crop ground has an average slope of 16-20% across the farm, making conservation tillage an important part of their cropping plan and

Crops grown this year include 780 acres of corn, 380 acres of alfalfa and 60 acres of wheat. Soybeans were taken out of the cropping rotation for 2019 because TJ found them to not be economically viable for the farm. In an ideal year, excess corn is sold as a cash crop.

The wheat is used to make straw for calf bedding and the maternity pen.

While contour strips have been an important part of the farm’s conservation plan for a number of years, TJ said he has been increasing the amount of no-tilling done. TJ now no-tills over 60% of the crop ground with plans to eventually no-till over 90% of the farm.

“No-tilling can be difcult with a dairy farm because of spreading manure,” TJ said.

“The spreaders and tanks all cause compaction.”

TJ feels the benets of notilling outweigh the challenges.

He estimates that no-tilling corn saves the farm approxi-

mately 55 cents per bushel on costs. No-tilling also allows the soil to hold moisture for longer periods of time as well as providing a lter for runoff.

“No-tilling allows the soil to have the ability to capture nutrients,” TJ said. “When rain hits the soil, it really makes a difference in preventing soil loss. Any disturbance to the soil causes something good to leave the soil, and I really don’t want that.”

This year, when TJ harvests his wheat elds, he plans to apply manure to the eld and then seed alfalfa for the rst crop in 2020.

“Alfalfa is a fantastic tool for no-tilling,” TJ said “The roots are so deep, it really breaks up compaction.”

The rotation TJ tries to stick with is leaving his hay in for about three to four years and following it with corn for three to four years before going back to hay. Wheat is used where hay will be going back in.

terways in his elds wherever a concentrated ow of water occurs. He seeds the waterways with perennial ryegrass because it will spread and works well to hold the soil. Waterways are mowed and baled as a crop.

Manure is hauled in the spring and fall with a small amount hauled on the 60 acres of harvested wheat in the summer as well as some on harvested alfalfa ground. TJ would like to be able to reduce manure hauling onto elds in the spring in order to reduce soil compaction.

Underlining their commitment to environmental stewardship and improving water quality, Banner Ridge Farms is part of a watershed management group, Grant County Watershed Pride. The goal of the edgling conservation group is to work towards cleaner water throughout the county. The group is modeling themselves after the Lafayette Agricultural Stewardship Alliance in neighboring Lafayette County.

Kieler Farms strives for water quality

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Kieler Farms, of Platteville, Wis., has made a commitment to ensure and improve the water quality near their farm.

Kieler Farms opened their doors for the Water Matters Tour June 25 hosted by Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin Discovery Farms and the Wisconsin Counties Association and the Wisconsin Towns Associations.

During the tour, the Kieler and Clark families shared strategies and practices that have allowed them to reclaim and reuse water on their dairy farm.

A multi-generational, family-operated farm, Kieler Farms is operated by nine members of the Kieler family: second-generation dairy farmers Louie and Ann Kieler, and George and Jackie Kieler along with the third generation of Eric and Leah Kieler, Matt and Renee Clark, and Daniel Kieler.

The 1,800-cow herd is housed in a 12-row sandbedded cross-ventilated freestall barn and milked in a 50-cow rotary parlor that were built in 2017. At the same time the barn and parlor were built, a sand separator was installed. In addition to the dairy herd, Kieler Farms is also home to 250 beef cattle and 500 steers.

“It’s been a progression over time,” said Renee of the farm’s growth. “Our old parlor was outdated.

barn and parlor, and we wanted to remedy those issues. We knew we wanted a sand separation system and a rotary parlor. The number of cows that we have today matches those two things that we really wanted to have.”

The site of the original dairy was landlocked.

Moving the dairy operation to a new site gave the Kielers the space and land needed to build a new facility.

The Kieler family desired to make their facility not only efcient but also environmentally friendly.

The decision was made to collect and reclaim all waste water produced on the farm as well as to recycle the sand bedding.

The barn was built with cow comfort in mind, having three weather stations located throughout the barn where climate conditions are monitored. The ventilation system is automatically adjusted in response to the temperature and humidity, and the sprinkler system kicks on at 75 degrees.

“This is what we were working for,” Renee said.

“It feels really good to be in here.”

The stalls are bedded twice a week with sand, and nearly 97% of the sand used is reclaimed through the sand separator. When the free stalls are cleaned, manure and sand are scraped to a ume located in the center of the barn where it is transported to the sand separator housed in its own building nearby.

“It’s great. It means fewer loads of sand bought and less sand reaching the elds,” Renee said of the process.

According to Matt each day, 5,000 to 10,000 gallons of water is used to wash the sand; no fresh water is used to clean the sand. The water is rainwater collected from the watertight asphalt feed storage pad.

The pad was designed with a 1% slope and a drainage system leading to a collection lagoon. From the lagoon, the water is pumped to the sand building for use in the sand reclamation.

Other water-saving measures are employed throughout the farm. In the parlor, water nds several uses during each milking shift.

“The holding area is ushed twice during each milking,” Renee said. “That is done with recycled water. That’s one way that we are reusing water.”

The increased size of the dairy farm has allowed the Kielers to implement a variety of protocols that allow them to become more efcient and better manage their resources, increasing the farm’s sustainability. They have been able to better utilize draglines for manure management, decreasing the need for hauling manure on roads. They have been able to increase their use of cover crops as well.

“When you think back over the years, you can see there is a better way to do things,” Renee said. “And, we’ve worked to make those changes over time.

We’re always looking at what we can do to improve.”

Farm and rural stress brochure now available statewide The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) are teaming up to make copies of the Coping with Farm and Rural Stress in Minnesota brochure available at FSA ofces in USDA County Service Centers across the state.

The brochure highlights key resources that can help people struggling with nancial, legal, emotional, and relationship problems.

“We’ve been hearing from farmers who are worried about the stress loads that so many of their friends, neighbors, and relatives are under,” said Meg Moynihan, MDA senior advisor. “They want to help the people they care about nd the right kind of support, but sometimes aren’t sure where to turn.”

Donald Swanson, an attorney with Koley Jessen in Omaha, Neb., and Kristine Tidgren, Director for the Center of Ag Law and Taxation and an adjunct assistant professor at Iowa State University, will facilitate the discussion.

Bruce and Rose Asfeld of Osakis, Minn., will host the 2019 Todd County Dairy Field Day on Tuesday, July 30 from 10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Asfeld’s farm is located at 10804 137th Ave, Osakis, Minn., which is right at the top of the I-94 West Union exit. Watch for signs. Refreshments and ice cream treats will be provided. Bruce and Rose Asfeld started dairy farming in 1994 at their current site near West Union. Their farm has undergone many exciting changes over the years. They currently milk about 125 Holsteins in a double-eight swing parabone parlor with automatic take-offs that was retrotted into their tiestall barn in 2009. The freestall barn started out as a compost barn and 104 stalls were installed in 2012. Part of the barn remains as a compost bedded area for special needs cows. Future farm goals are to build a new heifer raising facility as well as a hay shed. To promote good herd health practices when visiting farms, please wear clothes that have been washed and not worn in other livestock facilities since washing. Plastic boots will be provided. Planning for Protability in a Changing Dairy Industry will focus on options to increase protability when facing shrinking margins; risk management strategies and how they can benet dairy operations; changes and requirements that ag lenders may be asking for when reviewing loan requests; and a review of the milk market.

Planning for Protability will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be offered in two different locations to accommodate as many participants as possible. The program will be hosted at Pinter’s Gardens and Pumpkins located at 2475 State HWY 9, Decorah, on July 31; and the following day, Aug. 1, the same program will be offered at the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids.

National Dairy Shrine announces Merton Sowerby Junior Scholarships The National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce the recipients of the Merton Sowerby Junior Merit Scholarships for 2019. These scholarships are designed to encourage qualied Junior status undergraduate students to pursue careers in the dairy industry or related occupations. This scholarship is named in honor of National Dairy Hall of Fame Pioneer and Klussendorf honoree Merton Sowerby.

Emily Annexstad, of St. Peter, Minn., has been awarded the top scholarship of $1500. Emily is double majoring in Animal Science and Agricultural Communication & Marketing at the University of Minnesota. Emily is president of the campus National Agri-Marketing Association, vice president of the Beta of Clovia Sorority, vice president of the Minnesota Junior Holstein Association and active in the Gopher Dairy Club. Ms. Annexstad is currently serving as the 64th Princess Kay of the Milky Way. Emily plans on a career in dairy communications championing the positives of the dairy industry.

Dr. Hugo Ramirez, Iowa State University, is an Assistant Professor of Dairy Nutrition and Management at Iowa State University. His area of expertise is dairy cattle nutrition. Dr. Ramirez’s research focuses on corn silage preservation and storage. Before joining the faculty at Iowa State University, Dr. Ramirez was Assistant Professor in Dairy Science at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. He received both is Master’s of Science and Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
