A night out for dairy farmers Rochester pizzeria offers free food, gathering to show appreciation

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Pasquale Presa likes bringing people together and creating positive environments. Knowing dairy farmers have faced several hard years, Presa wanted to show his appreciation and create a stress-free gathering for those in the area.

“What better way than to come together over a piece of bread, tomato sauce and cheese?” Presa said. “It’s just a basic thing we need.”

On July 14, Presa welcomed southeast Minnesota dairy farmers to his restaurant, Pasquale’s Neighborhood Pizzeria, in Rochester, Minn., for a free meal of pizza, garlic knots, beverages and dessert as a way to say thank you for their hard work.

“I felt such great camaraderie,” Presa said. “Everyone got along, talked stories and chatted with each other. It was like a reunion for all of them.

To get to see smiles and for me to greet everyone was amazing.”

During the four-hour evening gathering, Pasquale and his crew served 180 people and 55 pizzas. This equated to 50 pounds of cheese, 50 pounds

of our and 5 gallons of tomato sauce. All food items were donated, including milk from Kemps, and cheese from Presa’s supplier, Grande Cheese in Fond du Lac, Wis. He also teamed up with Todd Speltz, a dairy nutritionist in the area, who formed the Local Motion Dairy Promotion, a movement in southeast Minnesota to partner with businesses to get them to share more dairy with their customers. Another goal of the movement is to show dairy farmers appreciation, such as the gathering Presa put together.

“I would have done this whether times [in the dairy industry] were good or bad,” Speltz said. “We just don’t show the dairy farmer enough appreciation for the work they do. They need to know the work they do is important.”

Presa rst thought of the appreciation night idea a few months ago when he came across Mark Berg’s video on Facebook where Berg explained the hardships of the current dairy economy, including on his family’s farm near Pine Island, Minn.

“It made me tear up,” Presa said. “I can understand the struggles these guys go through as [I am] an immigrant. We came to America [from Italy]

With help from others, Presa made his idea a reality.

He even met and talked with Berg that evening.

“It meant a lot,” Berg said about Presa hosting the appreciation night. “To me it would have been a different story … if he would have asked only me and my parents to come down for pizza. That’s a nice gesture, but what I liked is he invited everyone. We (dairy farmers) are all struggling and in the same boat.”

fun time,” Speltz said. “People sat around and chewed the fat for a long time afterwards.

They could have gone home and left, but it was just a good time with good company.”

That is the type of gathering and neighborhood Presa likes to create.

“It’s all about bringing people together through simple things,” he said. “We’re a pizza shop. I don’t consider myself a ne-dining restaurant. Wealth doesn’t bring people together.

It’s basic needs that bring people together.”

To Presa, those basic needs include creating community and showing appreciation.

Berg also appreciated that Presa tried to talk to everyone at the event.

“Mom and Dad had an emotional conversation with him because he could relate to them,” Berg said. “He did this out of the kindness of his heart.

He didn’t have to do anything.”

Speltz said it is important to create a strong community amongst dairy farmers.

“It was a time we could get together beyond a family night on the farm, beyond a farm meeting,” Speltz said. “We don’t do this enough.”

Down under athletics

Minnesotan earns invitation to Australian track, eld competition

JASPER, Minn. – Most high school athletes would be pleased to make it to the state level of competition. Only a select few will go on to compete at the national level.

Josh Raak, 19, participated in the Down Under Championships, an international track and eld event that was held July 12-14 in Brisbane, Australia.

Josh’s parents, Philip and Theresa Raak, milk 450 cows on their family farm. Josh is the middle of Philip and Theresa’s ve sons. Josh’s siblings include his two older brothers, Matthew and Andrew, and his two younger brothers, Jacob and Caleb. Philip’s parents, Irwin and Trudy, remain an active part of the operation.

Josh graduated from Southwest MN Christian High School this spring.

He participated in a variety of sports, but especially enjoyed track and eld events.

“My favorite events are the pole vault, the high jump and the hurdles,” Josh said. “I lettered ve out of six years. I was our school’s highest scoring individual in track and eld. I also set our school’s pole-vaulting record.”

This past winter, Down Under Sports contacted Southwest MN Christian High School and invited Josh to compete in the Down Under Championships track and eld event.

Invitees are selected based on their

performance records which are posted online.

“I was surprised to get the invitation,” Josh said. “I reached out to an alum who had participated in the past, and he encouraged me to go. He said that I would enjoy seeing all the sights and experiencing a different culture.”

Theresa felt similar.

“I was taken aback about the whole thing at rst,” she said. “I encouraged Josh to explore it further. We didn’t know if he would ever get an opportunity like this again.”

Josh eventually decided to go to Brisbane with Theresa accompanying him on his Australian odyssey.

“There were a million details that had to be taken care of before we left,” Theresa said. “We had to get our U.S. passports, and then we had to obtain travel visas from the Australian government.”

They departed July 9.

“Between the bus ride to our hotel and the ying, the entire journey took roughly 18 hours,” Theresa said.

Josh was one of about 600 American athletes to participate in the 2019 Down Under Championships. A total of more than 850 athletes from nations that included Australia, New Zealand and various Pacic Rim countries vied for medals.

Athletes competed against others in their age groups. There was no age limit in the open class. One open class pole vaulter was 62 years old.

“I decided to enter the steeple chase even though I had never run it before,” Josh said. “I ended up nishing in third place.”

During the high jump event, Josh set a personal record of 6 feet, 1 inch. “Josh had a good time and was running against some very strong athletes,� Theresa said. “It was a bit cool on some of some mornings as I watched Josh from the stands. It was midwinter down there. The overnight lows were in the 50s and highs were in the 70s. I was glad that we brought along extra sweatshirts.�

Josh had a positive experience competing. “The athletes were all very competitive,� Josh said. “During an Olympic year, the Down Under Championships can be used to qualify for the Olympics. But everyone was friendly.

I got to meet a lot of new people and made a bunch of new friends.�

After the competition, Josh and Theresa did some sightseeing. “I got to hold a koala,� Josh said. “It smelled like a wet dog that had been in the cow yard.�

“During the bus ride, I saw kangaroos grazing with a herd of cattle.�

They also went on a bus tour into the mountains and visited a rain forest. “During the bus ride, I saw kangaroos grazing with a herd of cattle,�

Josh said. “The cattle have free range and would stand right in the middle of the road. Our bus had to wait until they decided to move. I also went on a boat tour of Brisbane’s canals. We saw manmade islands that had huge mansions on them.�

They stayed in the area known as the Gold Coast. “They have miles and miles of beautiful beaches, but you’re only allowed to swim where there’s a lifeguard station,� Theresa said. “The undertow is very powerful. While we were there, a lifeguard had to jump in and save an athlete who had been caught in the undertow.�

As a dairy farm mom, Theresa paid extra attention to Australian dairy foods. “I never saw milk offered as a menu option,� Theresa said. “All of the ice cream was almond-based. The only cheese we saw was on a pizza or a cheeseburger. On the other hand, the buffet always had yogurt. I went to a couple of convenience stores and saw that a liter of milk cost $4 to $5 Australian.�

An Australian dollar is worth about 70 cents in U.S. dollars. “We learned that our tour guide’s father is a dairy farmer,� Josh said. “His dad milks about 450 cows and grazes them year round. One of the things he has to worry about is his Friesian cows getting bitten by poisonous snakes and spiders.�

The Raaks sampled some of the local cuisine, including kangaroo jerky. “The kangaroo is their national animal, and they eat their national animal,� Theresa said.

This fall Josh will begin classes at Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn., where he will study farm operation management. But there is one thing that will likely make him a bit different than other students at the college. “I think that I might have been the only dairy farm kid who competed at the 2019 Down Under Championships,� Josh said.

Dalquists named Morrison County Farm Family of the Year

Couple instills organic practices for next generation

RANDALL, Minn. – Dale and Kathy Dalquist are proud dairy farmers, having continued the family farm for four generations and using organic practices to welcome the fth generation home.

The Dalquists presence in farming and their contributions to the area communities aptly bestow them the 2019 Morrison County Farm Family of the Year.

“It is really an honor,” Dale said.

“There are not many dairy farmers eligible for the award in this area that are still farming.”

Dale and Kathy milk 30 cows near Randall, Minn., with their son, Michael, and his family – wife Cora and two daughters, Elsie and Christina – who moved from North Dakota.

The Dalquists’ farm began in 1897.

Up until the ‘80s, the farm was run conventionally.

“I was farming conventionally for 20-plus years, buying and spraying chemicals on the elds,” Dale said.

“When the chemical fumes came back at me, I realized this probably wasn’t good for me or the land.”

Concerned, Dalquist met with a man whom he bought alfalfa seed from.

“He started convincing me, and his ideas matched what I had in the back of

my mind,” Dale said. “So, we started using organic practices 25 to 30 years ago. But, there was no market for our milk until 2005.”

The Dalquists sold to Organic Valley until 2015 when they switched to Scenic Central, a brokerage rm.

“The rst two or three years with them were the best,” Dale said.

Their milk was shipped to a cheese processing plant in Turtle Lake, Wis. “They wanted a semi load a day, and at the time there wasn’t enough of us for that,” Dale said. “So, we provided as much as we could.”

“We can produce three loads in two days,” Dale said. “Since the Turtle Lake plant only wants one load every other day, it’s really been a challenge to nd a market for the milk.”

Dale always wanted to be a dairy farmer.

“I spent one year in college at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and then realized I belong here at home,” Dale said. “My parents were about to retire anyway.”

At the time, Dale was going for an animal science degree but spent the majority of his time in the college’s dairy barn.

“In the barns, two people would milk the 100 cows in a tiestall,” Dale said. “Then we’d have a cart on wheels to hold the milk. It would be poured

into a strainer and eventually 10-gallon cans to be carried into the milk room and poured in the bulk tank.”

Kathy attended the University of Minnesota Technical College in Waseca, Minn., and then worked as an animal health technician for three years at the veterinary clinic in Little Falls, Minn.

“On the farm, I take care of the cows if there is a problem, spend time feeding the calves and assist with any health problems,” Kathy said.

Dale was mostly in charge of breeding, crops and miscellaneous chores.

“It was a joint venture,” Dale said.

“We work together doing chores and eld work.”

Kathy is still involved in the 4-H program. Their children are fourth generation 4-Hers.

“After many years being involved, I decided that it was time to retire,” Dale said.

Now, the couple is transitioning out of dairy farming as their son takes over. After being off the farm for 3.5 years, Michael moved home this past spring.

“I always enjoyed the freedom on the farm, and between college and getting married I attended many organic seminars where my head was lled with ideas,” Michael said. “I really enjoy living and growing things. Dad has also had some health issues, so it’s time for him to slow down, but I do value the importance of keeping the farm going into the fth generation.”

In retirement, Dale hopes to do a lot more shing, traveling to Nebraska and Washington, and will continue to help Michael.

The Dalquists are planning to accept their farm family award at FarmFest Aug. 6-8 in Redwood Falls, Minn.

The family was notied of their prestigious award in early June. Come mid-July, they were told they were going to have a meeting at their farm.

“One car pulled in, who was a friend of mine, then another, another and another,” Dale said. “There ended up being a total of 14 people here.”

The sun and dry air the last few days have been a welcome sight. I think the weather patterned has finally changed a bit. We are cutting the sorghum sudan today (July 24) and plan to RAINFALL TOTALS harvest it tomorrow. Our third crop alfalfa still has Last 2 about one week before we Weeks chop it. We sprayed for leaf hoppers about two weeks ago. Our first corn we planted is about one week from tasseling. Many of the neighbors have corn that has already tasseled.

The corn is looking better Since April 14 than it was two to three 34” weeks ago. There are still some yellow corn spots where it got too wet, but most of it is pulling through. I would describe the corn condition as good, but not excellent.

The corn that got hailed on is looking thin and tough. The corn I planted June 10 is waist to shoulder high. It was shorter when the hail hit. I didn’t want to ruin the fields.

The hot weather caused stress in corn, especially in the light soils. Some of the corn is starting to tassel and the heat is pushing it along.

I’ve seen some curled and are white from the hot, RAINFALL TOTALS dry days. The corn fields that were planted in wet Last 2 ground are not doing so Weeks good and I don’t expect much to change with the compaction. It has been nice to finally make nice dry hay, not being rushed by storms. I just finished our second cutting today (July 23). First crop took over a month to make and second Since April 14 crop I did in two weeks, so 12.8” I had different stages of maturity. The early first crop yielded great, the second cut yielded real good, but was from the early first cut. The third crop is coming nicely, too.

We’ve had 2.1 inches of rain. The crops are doing pretty well around here.

I’m about half done with my second crop. The first RAINFALL year seeding is doing TOTALS really well, but the older Last 2 fields are lagging behind; Weeks I would say about 60-70% of last year. I don’t know why, we’ve had enough warmth and rain, maybe it’s been too much rain.

The corn around here is doing really well. Some in the area is starting to tassel. Mine is just about Since April 14 ready to start. I think I’ll 14.7” probably be doing my silage corn the second or third week in September, but the corn I want for high moisture may not be ready until November.

We got about 2.5 inches from the storms this past weekend, and about 6 inches total 3”in the last two weeks. We missed the tornadoes RAINFALL by about 10 miles. Our TOTALS Last 2 corn is doing well and Weeks is tasseling. Everything around here looks really good. Right now, we are between 6” crops of hay. We won’t start our third crop until about Aug. 1.

The second crop was Since April 14 17” pretty good, and the first cutting of the new seeding the plants were short, but it was very thick. We’ll have some rye to combine in a week to 10 days.

We had 5-plus inches during the storm Thursday night (July RAINFALL 18). The rain gauge holds TOTALS 5 inches and it ran over. A Last 2 neighbor said he had about Week 6.25 inches. We have had about 7.25 inches total.

We are working on our second crop between the rain. The early corn is just starting to tassel and looks pretty good. The later stuff is doing OK but the wet spots aren’t really good. Since April 14 27.58” Today (July 23), we are putting urea on the corn, so we are hoping that helps even out some of the short areas. We were going to make forage with our oats, but with the weather we’ve decided to combine them and then make straw, since we can use the straw.

Until today (July 23), we really have not been doing anything in the fields. I started cutting the second crop today. I’d say it’s going to be about 60-70% of what RAINFALL it was last year. The second crop Timothy looks fantastic. TOTALS Last 2 This week, I’m going to small square bale all my second Week crop and then chop the second crop clover into the silo. The second crop clover looks great, but there is no alfalfa that came back in it.

The quality of the second crop looks good, even if the quantity is down. There isn’t as much weed pressure as I Since April 14 expected there would be. The 22.5” corn isn’t doing too badly. I would say it’s about 70% of where it should be. The beans look phenomenal. We need more hot temperatures for the corn and hay.

The crops are all over in growth because of the planting season was so long.

Powder and cheese lifted the July 16 Global Dairy Trade auction (GDT), ending four consecutive declines. The weighted average of products offered jumped 2.7%, following a 0.4% loss on July 2, 3.8% on June 18, 3.4% on June 4, and 1.2% on May 21. Sellers brought 55.1 million pounds of product to the market, up from 54.5 million in the last event and the highest since Feb. 19.

All products traded were in the black, led by skim milk powder, up 3.8%, following a 3.2% rise last time. Whole milk powder was up 3.6%, after holding steady. This was the rst positive move in eight auctions. GDT Cheddar was up 3.3%, following three consecutive events of loss, down 1.5% on July 2. Butter and anhydrous milkfat were both up 1.7% following losses of 4.8 and 1.9% respectively.

FC Stone equated the GDT 80 percent butterfat butter price to $1.9199 per pound U.S., up 3 cents from the July 2 event. CME butter closed Friday at $2.3975. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.7548 per pound, up 5.1 cents from the last event and compares to Friday’s CME’s block Cheddar at $1.78. GDT skim milk powder averaged $1.1365 per pound, and compares to $1.1020 last time. Whole milk powder averaged $1.3944, up from $1.3465. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at $1.0075 per pound.

FC Stone adds “While mounting concerns over fresh milk supply could be a factor, today it seems more of a U.S. issue. We can mount questions around supply of milk in Europe this summer or New Zealand this fall, but that doesn’t seem to be a driving factor at the moment. Instead, we surmise that the demand side of the equation, perhaps stemming from Asian protein replacement demand as continued Swine Flu issues mount, is a larger issue today.”

U.S. dairy exports set a record in 2018, with volume reaching 15.8% of U.S. milk solids production, well above the ve-year average of 14.7%. But the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) estimates exports might have reached 17%, had retaliatory tariffs not been in place. USDEC’s goal is 20% of solids production.

“Fortunately, the U.S. and Mexico have lifted their retaliatory tariffs, paving the way for Congress to ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a high priority for the U.S. dairy industry and all of U.S. agriculture,” says USDEC. “While talks between China and the United States are continuing, we are less than optimistic that we will see Chinese tariffs lift soon. Tariffs as high as 45% on U.S. dairy products and ingredients are having a negative effect.”

“Since the tariffs were enacted last July, the volume of combined U.S. dairy exports to China has dropped 43% compared to the same period of time before tariffs went into effect,” according to the USDEC. The U.S. market however is chugging along irrespective of the tariffs and FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski said in the July 22 Dairy Radio Now broadcast that “The bigger story is the domestic bull market that is emerging for all dairy products.” He adds that “the roots are in languishing U.S. milk production,” which he blamed on the previous years of poor dairy prices and farms exiting the business.

“The U.S. market is trading on its own accord,” Kurzawski explained, and while he admits we want to look at exports and we know exports are important to the U.S. dairy industry long term, “the short term scenario is, it doesn’t matter what the butterfat price in Europe is doing, the U.S. butterfat price is going to do its own thing, as will U.S. cheese. The U.S., market is focused on the other 85% of the business, the domestic market.”

He admits some regions of the country are doing ne in milk output but rising temperatures could change that, plus “there’s lots of buyers for milk in the Midwest, they’re competing for that milk, and that’s going to continue for the next at least six months,” he concluded.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) member cooperatives accepted 21 offers of export assistance from CWT this week to help capture sales of 3 million pounds of Cheddar, 35,274 pounds of anhydrous milkfat, 108,027 pounds of cream cheese and 2.585 million pounds of whole milk powder.

The products will go to customers in Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and North Africa, now through December and raised CWT’s 2019 exports to 33.99 million pounds of Americantype and Swiss cheeses, 189,598 pounds of anhydrous milkfat, 4.21 million pounds of butter (82% milkfat), 3.25 million pounds of cream cheese and 35.36 million pounds of whole milk powder. They will go to 26 countries and are the milk equivalent of 697.2 million pounds of milk on a milkfat basis, according to CWT. Mid-July CME block Cheddar closed the week at $1.78 per pound, down a half-cent on the week and third consecutive week of decline, but is 26 cents above a year ago. The barrels saw a Friday close at $1.7050, down 3 1/2-cents, but 43 1/2-cents above a year ago when they fell 15 1/4-cents, and are 7 1/2-cents below the blocks. 28 cars of barrel was the only cheese sold on the week.

CME traders were anticipating Friday afternoon’s Cattle Report plus Monday’s June Milk Production and Cold Storage reports. Dairy Market News reported that a growing number of Midwest cheese producers are concerned about farm milk availability.

Offers are down due to the heat as farmers report in some cases, dramatic milk-per-cow output declines however some cheesemakers are still nding discounted spot milk. Prices ranged from $1.25 under to 75 cents over Class. Cheesemakers are concerned about more 90 plus degree temperatures in the upper Midwest. Cheese sales reports have been mostly positive. Specialty cheesemakers continue to prepare for fall demand increases, while pizza cheese and curd producers suggest retail/food service demand remains healthy. Cheese production has slipped overall, but remains mostly steady.

Western cheesemakers report plenty of milk is available and production is active. And, while the perception of demand may not be all that was hoped for, it is enough to keep inventories in check and buyers say they do not have trouble getting the cheese they need. Grilling season has been ongoing, but with hotter weather, consumers may take their eating experiences indoors until the football seasons kick off, the next big push for cheese consumption. Food service demand is good, but not great. Retail demand is steady, but not extraordinary. Exports have perked up with lower U.S. prices and export assistance programs.

Cash butter nished Friday at $2.3975, down 1 1/2-cents on the week but 14 3/4-cents above a year ago, on a hefty 51 sales for the week.

Some Midwestern butter plants scheduled downtime for maintenance this week. This is timely, says DMN, “as cream multiples on the spot market have become scally beyond their reach. Ice cream production increases have naturally merged with the increasing temperatures, which have begun to noticeably affect farm milk output. These two factors are undoubtedly prompting butter makers to relay a tightness on cream markets, and they expect it to remain so.”

Western butter markets are mixed. Retail sales are variable from one manufacturer to another. While some commercial demands are sluggish, others are good. Butter output has slowed because more cream is moving to ice cream and other Class II production and a number of butter makers have stopped producing butter altogether, opting to sell their cream.

Worldwide, butterfat is available at more affordable prices compared to the U.S. Spot loads are becoming tighter. Sources say numerous butter buyers are anxious about a possible upsurge in prices and are insuring coverages for future weeks.

Grade A nonfat dry milk ended the week at $1.0075 per pound, down 2 cents and the lowest CME price since April 22, but is still 22 1/4-cents above a year ago. 3 cars found new homes on the week.

Cash dry whey closed Friday at 34 cents per pound, up 1 3/4-cents on the week but 8 cents below a year ago. 5 cars traded places on the week at the CME. The Agriculture Department’s monthly Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, issued July 17, mirrored milk price and production projections in the July 11 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report.

“The forecast for the size of the milking herd in 2020 was unchanged at 9.355 million head. However, recent yield data and relatively high expected feed prices have motivated a slight decrease in forecasted yield per cow to 23,710 pounds.”

The Agriculture Department announced the August Federal order Class I base milk price at $17.89 per hundredweight, up 71 cents from July, $3.74 above August 2018, and the highest Class I price since January 2015’s $18.58.

It equates to $1.54 per gallon, up from $1.22 a year ago. The Class I average stands at $16.34, up from $14.54 a year ago and 3 cents shy of 2017’s average.

Meanwhile, dairy margins were at to slightly weaker over the rst half of July as lower milk prices and a decline in projected feed costs largely offset one another, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. The MW stated “The milk market has been supported through June by strength in the cash cheese market; however, a recent correction in cash blocks and barrels at the CME has caused Class III futures to correct in early July.”

“Concern is growing that high prices may begin to discourage dairy product demand at the same time producers are incentivized to increase milk production. The forward curve would appear to reect this thinking as Class III prices in early 2020 are trading at more than a dollar discount to fall values. USDA released the July WASDE report which updated estimates for milk production as well as dairy product imports and exports,” much of which I reported here last week.

The MW added that “Lower feed demand from China due to the African Swine Fever outbreak has been a major drag on whey exports this year, and that trend is expected to continue into 2020.”

The USDA’s latest Crop Progress report shows 17% of U.S. corn is silking, as of the week ending July 14, up from 8% the previous week but 42% below a year ago and 25% behind the ve year average.

58% of the crop is rated good to excellent, down from 72% a year ago.

95% of U.S. soybeans are emerged, up from 90% the previous week and 5% behind a year ago, and 4% below the ve year average. 54% are rated good to excellent, down from 69% a year ago.

56% of the cotton crop is rated good to excellent, up from 41% a year ago.

The June Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the all food category was 258.1, up 1.9% from 2018. The dairy products index is 217.4, up 0.6%. Fresh whole milk was up 2.7%, cheese was down 1.2%, and butter was up 0.8%.

In politics; the National Milk Producers Federation marked the one-year anniversary this week of then-FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb’s famous observation that “almonds don’t lactate” by reminding the agency “it still has not resolved the issue and

that citizens who heeded its call for comments with thoughtful responses deserve answers.”

“An almond doesn’t lactate, I must confess,” Gottlieb said last July 17, admitting that FDA has been lax in enforcing its own rules on the use of dairy terms on products containing no dairy ingredients. “Have we been enforcing our standard of identity? The answer is, probably not,” he said, while pledging agency action in “something close to a year.”

HELPING GOOD MANAGERS MAKE BETTER TRADING DECISIONS CME Group block and barrel cheddar prices weakened 8-10 cents in mid-July after reaching prices not seen since the fall of 2016. Futures are holding up a little better giving up 50 cents in the August contract reflecting about half of the cash trading price decline. This is likely an indication that traders anticipate cash prices to rebound.

U.S. block cheddar cheese prices appear to be setting up a trading range between $1.75-1.90. EU cheddar is currently trading $1.60, with NZ trading $1.74. Technically, Class III prices are finding resistance at the $18 Class III level as buyers have not pushed prices above this value since 2014. It will be difficult for prices to move above this level without a major shift in fundamentals.

Higher feed prices are providing psychological support to milk markets due to margin exposure fears from higher input cost risks. With much uncertainty over the growing crop this may be the milk price volatility wild card in the coming months. Crop condition ratings have been holding up well with most Western states reflecting a healthier crop than Eastern locations. Southern Iowa, Northern Missouri and East of this region have seen little precipitation in the past 30 days. This has some in the trade concerned, but the reality is there is plenty of subsoil moisture to carry the crop if root development supports finding it.

Due to late planting, crop maturity continues to be the biggest risk factor in the growing crop.

How this plays out in the coming months will affect feed costs and milk prices. Some of the best buys in certain bi-products for the coming year have likely already been seen, with much uncertainty remaining in the corn bi-product category as well as regional corn basis.

Perspective about the largest U.S. robotic dairy

Houin presents at international precision conference

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Brian Houin had a vision of how his future dairy would look.

“I had a dream to build my own dairy,” Houin said. “When we rst started talking about it, robots weren’t even on the table.”

Now Houin and his family claim the title of having the largest robotic dairy in the United States. On their Homestead Dairy, they milk 2,100 cows using 36 robots in a new facility they started using February 2017 near Plymouth, Ind. They also milk 2,700 cows in two conventional parlors on two farmsites. Houin presented about his dairy June 19 during the Second International Pre-

cision Dairy Farming Conference in Rochester, Minn.

“Yes, we are a large farm, but we are a family-oriented farm,” Houin said.

Twelve family members across three generations work on the dairy.

The robotic milking facility has three pens per robot and is built for up to 48 robots. Pens without robots are being used to house dry cows and as maternity pens.

“The cows don’t have to get on a trailer and leave. We really like that,” Houin said.

When the Houins began using the facility in February 2017, they started six robots every two weeks. By April, they were using 24 robots. In January 2018, the Houins added 12 more robots.

It also allowed them to use their own genetically-tested heifers to ll the facility rather than purchasing outside animals.

The barn is a commercial building.

Houin said. Before building, the Houins milked 3,200 cows on three farmsites.

“We were milking the same number of cows that a rotary [parlor] could, but with twice the labor, just getting cows milked,” Houin said. “We knew if we wanted to stay in the business long term, we needed to increase our efciency.”

“Labor is getting extremely hard to nd,” Houin said. “You think it can’t get worse, and every year it does. Nobody wants to milk cows anymore, so you have to pay more for people who want to do the work. Labor costs are a lot.

What’s it going to cost ve to 10 years from now? Minimum wage keeps going up.”

Their decision also factored in the best environment for the cows.

“This included not putting a cow in a holding pen three times a day in July when it’s 90 degrees and 80% humidity,” Houin said. “You can do all the fans and sprinklers you want, but it’s still stressful on the cows. We thought that was a big advantage – giving the cow more freedom to choose what she wants to do, when she wants to do it.”

Houin also liked the demeanor of cows in a robotic milking barn.

“It only took [touring] one robot barn to notice the cow behavior – how different it is. The barns are so much quieter, the cows are so much more relaxed. They’re more curious. You stand there, and they come up to you.”

For Houin, this also makes the barn a friendly environment for visitors.

Having cows milked in a consistent manner also creates a safer product, Houin said.

“I didn’t realize until after we started, these robots sense abnormal milk and dump it down the drain,” he said.

“It tells a better story, and you can have a higher quality product.”

Since the Houins also have a double-25 parallel parlor, they are able to compare the robots to a conventional facility. For labor, six employees are responsible for 2,200 cows in the robot barn while nine people are needed for 1,900 cows in their conventional set up.

“There are denitely some labor

savings [with robots],” Houin said.

Houin said they were expecting the robot feed to cost more. That has not been the case. There is no difference other than the way it is fed. The corn gluten in the ration is fed as a pellet in the robots.

“The diets are identical,” Houin said. “I just take the wet corn gluten out of the TMR and put it in a pellet in the robot. It’s been working really well.”

Milk production for the cows in the robotic milking facility is 5-8 pounds higher than in the parlor set up. Maintenance costs are also lower in the robot barn: $13.83 per cow per month with the robots versus $16.87 per cow per month in the double-25 parlor.

“That was a little surprising,” Houin said. “But we’re comparing a 1-year-old facility to one that’s 18 years old. How fair is that comparison? I don’t know.”

Reproduction has not been at the level Houin has wanted but is improving. Last year, the robot barn averaged a pregnancy rate of 23%, while the conventional dairy had a pregnancy rate of 21%.

“Neither one of those I was satised with,” Houin said. “In the robots, we were getting too many cows out there – 120-130 days [in milk], even 150 days, and we had never put semen in them.

That’s obviously not good.”

At the beginning of June, Houin made changes to the ovsynch program he was using to try to get cows pregnant faster.

“The cow is cycling on her own,” Houin said. “We’ve got the technology.

We’ve got the heat detection systems.

Let’s use them and only target the cows that need it. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Houin continues to tweak management and works to care for the cows, regardless of having the title of the largest U.S. robotic dairy.

On a sweltering July 15 that started with rain showers, the day consisted of milking

cows, laying concrete and evening farm chores.

“Even in the concrete business, there are no perfect days,” David Zellmann said.

The day began with Dylan waking up at 5:10 a.m. to start chores with his grandpa, Clarence. Morning milking began around 5:30. As David and Ja-

mie milked the cows the boys did the morning feeding and other chores.

By 7:30 a.m., Jamie and his two nephews took a short break for breakfast while David wrapped up morning chores.

ConƟnued from ZELLMANNS | Page 16 Then they were on the jobsite shortly after 8 a.m. ready to spend the day laying concrete blocks for a house foundation in Hamburg, Minn.

“We usually start laying concrete in mid-May once all the crops are planted and then slow down around harvest time so we can get the crops in,” Jamie said.

David agreed.

“We used to work for other people and we saw what they got for wages when we did all the work,” he said. “In 1997, we had enough of that and went out on our own.”

David and Jamie have been laying concrete since they were little boys.

“When I was just 12 years old, Dad would drop us off at a job and one of us would cut sod while the other would help with the concrete,” Jamie said.

Daily, they do block foundations or multiple types of at work. Now they are a sought after concrete business.

“Nobody likes laying block foundations anymore,” Jamie said. “I guess we are the last of the diehards.”

Around 9:30 a.m., the Zellmanns were delayed for an hour due to a spotty rain shower.

“The storm just came out of nowhere,” Jamie said.

Normally, inclement weather would mean the end of a job, but since the concrete was not going to be exposed it did not matter much, said David.

typically take a short break to rehydrate and then go back to work.

“This job has a water hydrant, so it’s easy to keep relling on water,” David said.

Both of David’s boys are also involved in the concrete business.

“I can’t sit around all day; I have to work,” Dylan said.

Devin agreed.

“I bust my butt off, but we make good money.” he said.

The boys are also involved in high school football. Devin plays linebacker and tight end, and Dylan plays tackle and defensive end.

While at the jobsite, the Zellmanns set their goal to nish the next layers of block and half of the garage so they could return the next day and nish the job.

“Right now, we are going

to wait for an hour or so on the next load of block that has to come in,” David said.

After laying block all day, Devin and Dylan returned to the house for a quick snack from their grandma, Darlene, before starting on evening chores at 4:30 p.m. Jamie and David returned to the farm a short time later.

squares of hay.

“A few years back, we would come home and have to put little squares up in the hay mow after spending a whole day laying block,” David said.

“That was really hard.”

Now, the family only bales one load of little squares for the fair cattle while making the rest into baleage to be used throughout the year.

Once Devin and Dylan came back outside, the family

made TMR for the cows and got ready for milking.

“It’s raining again, so we decided to keep the cows in this evening,” David said. “The boys will be doing the feeding in the barn.”

Meanwhile, Clarence was feeding calves, David and Denise were setting up for milking and Jamie was spreading fertilizer in the elds.

“My brother got rained out, so he had to come back and

help,” David said.

The rst milkers went on the cows at 5:30 p.m. as the rain nally slowed to a sprinkle.

After evening chores were done at the dairy farm, Dylan and Devin went home to do horse chores and Jamie went home to feed the young stock marking the end of another full day on their family farm.

Trelstads hang on to history

Steam engines, cow bells, antique tractors part of Dodge County Dairy

WEST CONCORD, Minn. – For Ron Trelstad, history is an important part of farming.

“I would like to hang on to what it was like 15-20 years ago,” Trelstad said.

“You have to look at the past to know where you’ve been and to see the future.”

History on Trelstad’s farm comes in the form of cow bells, steam engines and antique tractors. Trelstad milks 50 cows, raises 14 head of beef cows and calves, and farms corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and oats with his wife, Carol, two sons, Leon and Patrick and Patrick’s wife Rebekah, and great uncle, Bud Budenski, on his family’s dairy farm near West Concord, Minn.

The Trelstad and Budenski dairy farm started in 1925 when Trelstad’s great grandparents moved to the farm. In 1980, Trelstad purchased the farm from his great uncle, married and started his family on the farm, becoming the fourth generation in his family to operate the dairy.

“My grandpa didn’t want me to get drafted during the Vietnam War, so I started farming,” Trelstad said.

In order to do that, Trelstad kept management techniques and buildings that had worked in the past – cow bells for grazing animals and the barn, which was built in 1898.

“Grandpa said that we needed to be able to hear the cows when they went out to pasture so we could nd them again,” Trelstad said. “In fact, I am still using the rst original cow bell.”

The clanging metal keeps Trelstad condent of the cows’ location.

“Sometimes at night if you sit on the road, you’ll hear the cowbells ringing,” Trelstad said. “That’s how you’d know there are still cows here.”

The steam engines were also used on the farm long before Trelstad took over.

His great grandfather, Louie Budenski, had a long threshing run with his brother in 1904, and the steam engines were run through a partnership which dissolved in 1917.

“Back in the day, [our family] did a lot of threshing. They threshed for at least 8 to 10 neighbors in the 1920s, used the 3-bottom 1922 John Deere plow, which we still have, and even used the old saw mill to cut wood for wood stoves in our spare time,” Trelstad said. “We don’t have the original saw mill though.”

Bud was the youngest of the Budenski kids, his brother, Louis, was the licensed engineer, and his brother, Ed, was the separator man. Their skills and responsibilities allowed them to work as a team come threshing time.

Farming was not easy for the Budenskis.

When the depression hit, Louis sold the steam engines in desperation to try to save the farm. He sold them for scrap iron, but still lost the farm.

On May 31, 1932, the hottest day of the year, the Budenskis bought the farm back.

“We weren’t the only ones that lost everything and then bought it back. Several of our neighbors did the same,” Trelstad said.

Then, in 1953, they bought another steam engine mostly for memory-sake.

“A tractor was too easy, so they decided to go with another steam engine,” Trelstad said.

In order to operate steam engines on a farm, a license is needed to ensure a person is knowledgeable in all aspects of the machine to make sure it is operated safely. Inspections also take place every two years, said Trelstad.

“In fact, my son, Leon, is the fth generation of licensed steam engineers following in the footsteps of my grandparents, great uncle, Louis, my mother and I,” Trelstad said.

After doing custom work for quite some time, the Budenskis and Trelstads decided to showcase their work.

“In 1955, we participated in the Zumbro thresher show,” Trelstad said.

“But that quit in 1971 because of lack of help and interest.”

The Trelstads and Budenskis enjoyed

it so much they decided to start their own show.

“Originally, we held this huge threshing show out in our pasture every October in which people from all over came to see. The steam engines, the eight-bottom plow and of course the sawmill were showcased,” Trelstad said.

In recent years, the Trelstads have scaled back and now do a small threshing show for family and friends. It is the one time of year the steam engines are run.

“Two of the four steam engines still run,” Trelstad said. “The two that don’t run need boiler work.”

The Trelstads also have a lot of antique tractors.

“We lost the Avery in the depression, but bought it back in the 1950s because they were cheap,” Trelstad said.

Today, there are only three Avery tractors on the farm, which were bought in later years; one of them being the 1225 Avery Bud bought.

“My favorite memory with the Avery has to be when Louis drove past the ladies luncheon, and they made him stop the tractor cause it was too loud,” Trelstad said.

The Trelstads do not use the steam engines much anymore, but still think it is fun using the other old equipment.

“As long as it works, it’s ne,” Trelstad said. “We still plant with a four-row planter and use the old grain drill. It’s really fun and relaxing.”

Besides the antique collection, Trelstad loves being outside, having the open space and not a lot of neighbors to do what he wants.

“I get to see the birds and wildlife on the farm,” Trelstad said. “I love the calm and peacefulness.”

In the future Trelstad hopes to pass the dairy farm and the antique tractor and steam engine collection on to his sons, including an International Farmall M series his grandpa bought. This will keep the legacy of the steam engines, tractors, cow bells and the rest of the antiques in the family for many more years.

“To this day, we still have people come out to the farm just to see the old steam engines they once saw in the threshing show as little children,” Trelstad said. “It makes me really proud to say we still use them every year.”

In a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook the pasta to al dente and drain.

Return to the pot and melt in the butter. Toss to coat. Whisk together eggs, milk, hot sauce, salt, pepper and mustard. Stir into the pasta and add the cheese.

Over low heat, continue to stir for 3 minutes or until creamy.

Salt and pepper, as desired 1 tsp. Italian seasoning 1 Tbsp. butter 8 ounces mozzarella 28 ounces water

Set the Instant Pot on sauté. Melt the butter, add the garlic, Italian seasoning and sausage. Sauté until the sausage is no longer pink. Add both spaghetti sauce and pizza sauce to the sausage mixture. Next add in pasta. Add the water. Give a stir and put on the lid, and be sure to set the toggle switch to seal. Set on manual for 5 minutes. Do a quick release and open the lid after the silver pin has dropped. Add half the cheese and half the pepperoni. Mix into the pasta/meat mixture. Sprinkle the remaining cheese and pepperoni over the top of the mixture. Replace the lid. Let the cheese melt and the pepperoni warm through.
