A little goes a long way for fresh cow comfort and performance
1. Hold nozzle 4 to 6 inches away. 2. Separate quarter from leg. 3. Move the bottle in a mostly downward sweeping motion while pulling the nozzle trigger. Normal application is 3 to 5 pulls per quarter, depending on udder size. For fresh animals, spray all 4 quarters. There’s no one silver bullet for milk quality and udder health, but getting animals off to a good start on their lactations sure helps set the stage for profitability. These dairy producers make Udder Comfort™ a big part of the quality management protocols for fresh animals on their dairy farms. “Cost varies a bit, but one 500-ml bottle of spray should cover the pre- and post-calving use on 4 head. Even at $10 per animal, we figured it to a 15-to-1 ROI when using average California milk prices to convert results. We bank on an 8% milk increase in 2-year-olds from improved peak milk,” says Jan Sas on the protocol he detailed for a 1000-cow Newfoundland dairy. “Spray first-calf heifers daily with 3 to 4 evenly-distributed vertical sprays on every quarter, starting 3 to 4 days pre-calving; for multi-lactation cows, start 5 to 6 days pre-calving. First-calf heifers: Continue 2x/day for 3 days; Multi-lactation cows: Continue 2x/day for 5 days post-calving.” Todd Hendrickson of Roadside Dairy, Preston, Minn., also uses Udder Comfort faithfully for fresh animals after calving.
“By removing swelling, they recover and come into milk faster and milk out better,” he says. The 160-cow herd has an 85-lb herd average and SCC of 70,000. At Mesa Farms, Milford, Wis., “All fresh cows get udders sprayed after the a.m. and p.m. milkings for the first 3 days after calving. If they bag up big before calving, we spray pre-fresh udders in the maternity pen. This routine has decreased our need for other measures,” says Patrick Mess. The 100-cow dairy has a 93 lbs/cow/day herd average and SCC at 175,000.
