Thurks milk for last time in June

A nal farewell to the cows

VILLARD, Minn. – June 18 is coming all too soon for Ken and Jackie Thurk.

After having milked cows for 59 years, the Thurks are dispersing their 19-cow herd from their farm in Pope County near Villard, Minn.

“In all these years, we’re really fortunate we’re stopping with both our knees and hips,” Ken said.

Throughout their nearly six decades of dairy farming, Ken and Jackie have made an honest living for themselves and their ve children – Chris, Jennifer, Cathy, Alicia and Elizabeth. They take pride in the milk they have produced and the relationships they have formed with others in the dairy community.

And while always maintaining a smaller herd, the couple became respectable dairy farmers in Minnesota. “[Dairy farming] was good to us,” said Jackie, tears welling in her eyes as she looked out at the barn. “We’ve just always tried our best to get good quality milk from healthy cows.”

The couple began farming together on Ken’s family’s farm in the spring of 1966. Previously, Ken was milking cows, having purchased his parents’ share of the dairy in 1964.

Jackie, too, came from a dairy farm near Glenwood, Minn.

When the couple rst started dairying with 15 cows, Ken was taking evening classes under the GI Bill of Rights and also working overnights at the local TV tower. In time, Ken and Jackie focused all of their energy into the farm.

“In 1982, we added onto the barn with three maternity pens and the pipeline,” Jackie said.

Around the same time, the Thurks became one of the rst in the area to milk three times a day.

While the Thurks were briey challenged with body condition and reproduction with the increased frequency in milking, they saw improvements in production and herd health.

Milking more frequently also allowed Ken and Jackie to be more present in the barn and catch heats sooner.

“We did that for 19 years,” Ken said. “It was good, in terms of protability, and it allowed us to make it to the kids’ activities after school because we were done milking at 4 p.m.”

from working with their children and helping them with their 4-H activities.

“By the end of chores, we knew all about how school went,” Ken said. “It was a good life.”

Jackie agreed.

“Our neighbors have been wonderful, too,” she said.

“When we rst started, we didn’t have machinery, but

we were young and strong. We would help our neighbor load and unload hay and then another one plowed our driveway so the milk truck could get in.”

In their time dairying, the Thurks have had their fair share of challenges, from a bout of bovine viral diarrhea virus with their calves to a poor crop year in 1988. During those times, the couple fervently searched

for solutions.

“We’ve seen more years where God plays an important part,” Jackie said. “We didn’t know how we were going to get crops and then the crops turned around. There were times we didn’t know how we were going to survive, yet it’s Turn to THURKS | Page 3

“We’ve had good friends who were top end dairymen,” Ken said. “We also got to take in a lot of seminars across the nation.”

provement Association records. They raised a top cow in the county, and in 2014, their daughter’s cow, Pretty, was named the second best lifetime cow in the state.

The Thurks credit such accomplishments to their dedication in providing dry housing and maintaining a clean barn.

“We’ve always tried our best to take care of the cattle,” Jackie said. “It’s been a lot of trial and error to nd what works best for us.”

Ken agreed.

“There was one federal milk inspector who said he’s never seen a herd so clean,” he said. “We go through a lot of straw.”

The Thurks’ were overjoyed when their daughter, Alicia, asked to milk cows at the farm site.

In 2006, Alicia purchased the herd on contract for deed. She spent 11 years dairying at her parents’ farm site before relocating the herd. But when she was ready to clear out the barn, Jackie was not ready to stop milking.

“I wasn’t ready to be done yet, so I asked if we could buy ve cows from each of the long family lines,” Jackie said. “We bought four and then started housing our grandson-in-law’s Milking Shorthorns.”

Last winter, Ken and Jackie were again posed with the decision to stop milking.

“We said we would keep milking until the silo was empty. … Now we’re here,” Ken said.

Jackie agreed.

“Milking is easy, but the rest of farming was becoming an awful struggle,” she said.

On June 18, a few cattle will go to the sale barn, but the remaining will go to Alicia’s and their granddaughter’s farms near Browerville, Minn.

“We’ll still have heifers here and plan to raise beef cattle, too,” Jackie said.

They are looking forward to having more time to spend with their children and grandchildren. And while Ken and Jackie will not have the daily responsibility of milking cows, they have already offered a hand to their family who dairy farm.

REEDSBURG, Wis. – An interest in continuing to develop leadership skills and a desire to learn more about how her cooperative functions made Dorothy Harms rst seek a seat on what was then the East Central/Select Sires board in 2002. That trajectory eventually led to her being selected to serve as the rst female chairman of the Select Sires board of directors in March.

Harms and her husband Don milk about 30 cows on their Sauk County farm located near Reedsburg, Wis. In addition to the milking herd, the Harms run a small herd of beef cows and calves, and they are in the process of transitioning from a dairy operation to beef. They also operate a bed and breakfast on their farm.

“March 21 was the annual meeting where I was elected and took the position of chairman of the board,” Harms said.

“My term is for three years.”

Select Sires is made up of a federation of six different farmer-owned cooperatives in different regions of the United States, each with their own leadership.

Harms has served 17 years on the East Central/Select Sires, now CentralStar Cooperative, and has served as the secretary of that board for several years.

“At the time I rst ran for the Select Sires board, the East Central/Select Sires cooperative needed a new representative for the board,” Harms said. “I had attended an annual meeting and saw it as an opportunity for me to learn more about how the cooperative worked.”

Prior to being elected to serve as the chairman of the board, Harms served a total of eight years on the Select Sires

board, having been rst elected in 2010.

During that time, she has held a three year term each as both the rst and second vice president.

As part of her position as chairman of the board and her previous vice chairman positions, Harms also serves on the board of directors for Select Sires’ international subsidiary, World Wide Sires.

Serving in that capacity has given Harms a chance to travel abroad, including attending the World Wide Sires Distributors Conference in Barcelona, Spain; she will also be traveling next year to Osaka, Japan.

Harms brings to the position a unique business perspective after operating both her family’s farm and her bed and breakfast business. She also holds a degree in agri-business management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has past leadership experiences serving as a 4-H leader, a committee member with the Sauk County Holstein Breeders and serving in her local government.

During her time on the Select Sires board, Harms has learned more about the cooperative’s structure and about their facilities, as well as the other members that make up cooperative.

“It has been a great opportunity for me to meet other dairy and beef farmers from all across the country,” Harms said.

“The more you get to know people oneon-one, the more you see they are not that different from you. We all have the same core values, and the same commitment to our animals and their genetics.”

Harms feels she has the skill set to help lead both the board of directors and the cooperative forward, dealing with the many issues facing agriculture today.

“It’s a challenging time in agriculture,” Harms said. “We need to gure out what is best for our customer-owners.

Select Sires is the only U.S. AI company that is a cooperative, made to serve its members.”

Like all aspects of the dairy industry, there have been changes and consolidations within the cooperative, with many regional cooperatives merging, including most recently the merger of East Central/ Select Sires with NorthStar, forming the CentralStar Cooperative.

“We all want to see Select Sires continue to offer the best services, genetics and products for both dairy producers and beef ranchers,” Harms said.

Hingtgens to host lunch on the farm

BELLEVUE, Iowa – In 2012, the Hingtgen family hosted nearly 2,000 people for lunch on their dairy during June, and they are about to do it again.

Hingtgen Dairy is the location for this year’s Jackson and Clinton counties Lunch on the Farm. The event will take place from 1-4 p.m. June 23 at the farm near Bellevue, Iowa.

According to Scott Hingtgen, the family volunteered their dairy this year when another farm was not quite ready to host the annual event. He and his wife, Jessica, are active on the Jackson/Clinton County Dairy Promotion Board. “We all need to promote,� Scott said. “I remember this guy told me he wanted his boys to know food didn’t just come from the grocery store. Some people came from two hours away, but even people from a small town like Bellevue may have never been to a dairy, and they’re afraid to ask to come visit any other time.�

Visitors to the farm will get a slightly different experience than the Hingtgens gave them the ďƒžrst time around.

According to the couple, the promotion board has learned a lot since 2012. “Every year it gets better; it makes me feel good,� Jessica said. “Our board really works well together, and we are

New facilities on the farm since the previous event include a hoop barn housing heifers ages 2 months to 14 months, and Scott plans to replace feed bunks on a fence line before the lunch. The Hingtgens’ former home, an older farmhouse, is also gone, leaving a perfect green space for guests to enjoy this time around.

The Hingtgens’ children – Cameron, 14, Grace, 13, and Gabby, 11 – are ready to pitch in where they are needed. Cameron remembers the 2012 event.

“There was a lot of stuff going on,” he said.

Cameron’s role that year was to sit in a chair and run the robot arm. His sisters helped in the kids tent.

The family is tting in the Lunch on the Farm between their regular roles milking 120 cows, feeding out 100 steers annually and raising their heifers. They farm about 1,300 acres and do another 500 acres of custom work. A full-time employee, Brad Till, helps on the farm, and Jessica is a third grade teacher in Bellevue.

For both Scott and Jessica, opening their farm to the public is important because it gives people a chance to ask questions.

“The best part is just talking to people about what we do,” Jessica said.

Dairy Farmers of America turns social currency into real milk money Kicked off on World Milk Day, June 1, and throughout the month of June, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) will help raise awareness and provide relief towards the summer nutrition gap felt by nearly 18 million students who rely on school lunch programs across the country— almost twice the population of New York City. To do this, DFA is rallying around the power of social media and the support of celebrity chef Christina Tosi to share out this message and raise donations based on social actions. For each social post during the month of June, using #GiveMilkMoney, DFA will donate one gallon of milk, through its DFA Cares Foundation, to kids in need through Feeding America food banks across the country.

“DFA is made up of hardworking family farm-owners and employees who understand the power dairy has towards helping those in need and its nutritional benets,” said Kristen Coady, vice president of communications at DFA. “As a dairy cooperative and an industry, we have a responsibility to help nourish the communities we are a part of and this #GiveMilkMoney initiative aims to do just that.”

As part of the effort to close the summer nutritional gap, DFA is bringing new meaning to social currency by donating one gallon of milk for every social post using #GiveMilkMoney. To bring the #GiveMilkMoney movement alive in DFA’s hometown of Kansas City, custom milk money ATMs and a family friendly pop-up experience were located in the River Market in Kansas City, Mo. Traditionally seen as vehicles to receive, these customized ATMs were converted into the ultimate giving machines that allowed users to donate with their social currency and encourage their friends to donate through an automated tweet and retweet. After donating with their social currency, participants received a free bowl of milk and cereal to further enjoy the goodness of dairy.

World Milk Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. It has been observed on June 1 each year since 2001. The day is intended to provide an opportunity to bring attention to activities that are connected with the dairy sector.

Dairy becomes temporary classroom

Perkins Family Farm offers tours to kindergartners over 20 years

RED WING, Minn. – For one week each year, the Perkins family’s dairy turns into a class room.

For the past 20 years, they have offered farm tours to the kindergarten class in Red Wing, Minn. The family owned farm is milking 1,100 cows three times a day. The farm consists of patriarch and matriarch, Larry and Carol, who are semi-retired. Their sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Pam, and Tom and Kim, are the fth generation to run the farm, while Tom and Kim’s son and daughter-

in-law, Tim and Samantha, in addition to Brad and Pam’s son and daughter-in-law, Jake and Kelsey, are the sixth generation. Tim and Samantha have three kids: Carson, Maize and Marcus. Jake and Kelsey have two children: Ari and Aaron.

“We originally got started [with the tours] because one of the kindergarten teachers was in FFA with me back in high school, and she was always interested in sharing that story with her students,” Brad said.

The farm hosts 250 students in a four-day span. Last year, the Perkins family had a total of 10 classes visit. This year, they had eight classes come to the farm – two classes

a day for a one hour tour.

“My favorite part is getting a chuckle out of the questions that the students ask,” Brad said.

Kelsey and Brad lead the tours with Brad showing the students the milking parlor and freestall barn area, while Kelsey shows the children the calf barn and the tractor.

“This is one of my favorite weeks of the year,” Kelsey said.

In the double-25 parallel parlor, Brad explained that their cows produce about 10,000 gallons of milk, which is transported through a pipeline to the basement where the bulk tanks are placed. water, almost a whole bathtub full. Brad went on to explain the sprinklers, which keep the cows cool, and the activity monitors around the cows legs which keep track of the cows’ steps and temperature.

“That’s one of our main tools for getting cows pregnant,” Brad said.

When taking the students to the maternity area of the barn, Brad explained that 10 calves were born in the last three days. The normal average is three to four calves each day.

“That’s what fresh farm air smells like,” Kelsey said.

She explained that each calf gets colostrum and vaccinations within the rst four hours of birth and then gets 2 gallons of milk a day. The Perkins family uses their own milk rather than milk replacer.

“It really sets them on the right foot for the rest of their lives,” Kelsey said about the colostrum and vaccines.

Each of their calf barns house calves at different ages with one age range being from 3 weeks to 2 months old and another being 2 months to about 6 months old.

Kelsey said the oldest cow on the farm is about 10 years old.

They hope the kindergartners are learning from the tour. In addition to visiting the farm, the students have a farm unit and books they make for

class.

“It used to be no farm tour was complete without at least one teacher getting splattered in the face with manure, but this year no teachers were splattered,” Brad said.

Even with the splatters, the Perkins family hopes opening their farm every year helps teach the students a little more about dairy.
