Brothers establish careers in family farm

Mirons nd balance with next generation

As Fran steps away from the greater day-to-day tasks of farming, his sons have lled the void. However, the dairy’s stability in the industry remains the result of a joint effort.

“There’s really no rhyme or reason,” said Paul about how the responsibilities

are divvied amongst the three family members. “Everyone can do anything, and we all pitch in wherever.”

“We were already milking more cows in the summer and then cutting back in the winter,” Andrew said.

“When I came back, we ramped that up even more, and we didn’t sell back. We maintained milking a larger number of animals.”

HUGO, Minn. – For 42 years, Fran Miron and his wife, Mary Ann, have used dairy farming as a means of providing a wholesome lifestyle for their children.

Now, with two of their sons on the farm full time, the Mirons are watching their role in dairy farming take on a new form.

“I’m at the tail end of my career,” Fran said. “What keeps it exciting is being a part of growth and seeing what’s next for this operation, as opposed to just winding down.”

Fran milks 120 cows with his two sons, Paul and Andrew, on their farm in Washington County in the city of Hugo, Minn.

The Mirons rst welcomed home Paul 14 years ago, after he graduated high school and was pursuing a certication in agricultural power and equipment.

“I’ve always wanted to farm from the beginning,” Paul said. “I never really quit it. I was living at home during college, working and going to school.”

Three years ago, Andrew joined his father and brother on the family’s dairy.

conƟnued from MIRON | Page 3 group of cows. Then, as Paul and Andrew milk, Fran often feeds calves and youngstock, and switches the herd in and out of the barn two times over.

Throughout the day, the family works together in attending to immediate situations, as well as making a plan for the week ahead.

“If we’re all out in the barn, it provides us with an opportunity to talk about what we have to get done,” Andrew said.

Paul agreed.

“Could I do all of this by myself?” he said. “Yeah, but we work together and it makes things easier. … Many hands make light work.”

While the Mirons rely on each other daily, they also look towards one another and their skills best suited for certain instances. Fran oversees the cropping enterprise, which consists of 700 acres of corn,

soybeans, alfalfa and grass hay. Paul uses his abilities as a mechanic to handle all equipment needs as Andrew uses his knowledge gained through his degrees in animal science and agricultural education to formulate rations and make breeding decisions.

“I never went to school to do a ration on the y,” Paul said. “Because of Andrew’s work and how we manage the dairy, we very seldom have the vet out.”

Andrew agreed.

“Our newest tractor is a 1986 [Case IH 2594],” he said. “Paul does a good job maintaining that equipment so we can function that way. It saves the farm a lot of money.”

Andrew also sells seed, managing a local dealership, which has brought new knowledge to the Mirons’ agronomy enterprise.

Planning for tomorrow With an established routine, the Mirons have begun discussing farm transition, and Paul and Andrew taking on more ownership of the dairy.

Currently, Fran and Mary Ann, and Paul and Andrew all collect a percentage of the milk check.

“It gives Paul and I skin in the game with taking care of the cattle and doing what needs to be done,” Andrew said.

“We’re not just drawing an hourly wage. We have a reason for our cows to succeed.”

While the Mirons have not formed a partnership, the boys and their families are making

investments that benet the dairy.

The boys have purchased equipment for use on the farm, such as a TMR mixer, baler and other tractors. They have also taken ownership on some of the farm’s building equity.

“They’re investing their money in some of this stuff, and that’s how they’re gradually taking ownership here,” Fran said.

Last year, the brothers received a livestock investment grant that allowed the family to put up a 76- by 256-foot bedded pack barn, which includes a 18-foot wide feeding area. The grant provided a 10 percent incentive for qualifying expenses.

During the winter months, from October through May, the barn is bedded with corn stalks and bean straw. When pastures are ready, the cows have open access to the barn for feeding and shelter but spend most of their time outdoors.

“The barn is designed in a way we could put in three rows of freestalls,” Fran said. “Since we’re grazing mostly and plan to continue grazing, we didn’t need a freestall barn right now.”

This summer, the Mirons plan on expanding their milkhouse, along with other improvements, with the incentive of the livestock investment grant they received this year.

As far as planning for the transition of the farm, the Miron family is developing a strategy.

“We’ve been going through a goal-setting session,” Fran said. “We started this when Paul came back, and this year, we brought the wives into it. We sat down on a Sunday afternoon and started jotting down goals that each of us had.”

Through this, the Mirons have found what each party nds important and they have begun incorporating those goals into future plans for the operation.

“Going through school and hearing stories about people and their dairies, I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of a transition that has worked out awlessly,” Andrew said.

As the Mirons look towards the future and establish a partnership, the values Fran and Mary Ann instilled in their children while dairy farming will certainly carry on through the generations.

“Our life has been in this farm and within the community,” Fran said. “That’s the heritage we want our kids to have.”

Käsemeister Creamery celebrates grand opening Spink Colony welcomes public to cheese production facility

FRANKFORT, S.D. – Spink Colony held an open house June 1 to celebrate the ofcial opening of their new dairy processing facility. The new venture, Käsemeister Creamery, is located at Spink Colony, a Hutterite community located on the banks of the James River in east central South Dakota.

Paul Wipf is its manager.

“With milk prices the way they are, it just made sense to build the creamery as a way to add value to our product,” Paul said. “We are excited to invite everyone to see the new creamery and try some of the delicious cheese and butter we are making.”

The word käsemeister is German for cheese master.

The large variety of cheeses that are being produced at Käsemeister Creamery reects that ambition.

“Starting up a new cheese plant that was built from scratch has been a real learning experience.

But a person should never stop learning.”

Käsemeister Creamery produces Pepper Jack and Colby cheese, along with mild and sharp Cheddar. They also produce a panoply of avored cheese curds, including such

distinctive offerings as bacon jalapeño and apple cinnamon.

“We are always experimenting with different avors,” Jeremy said. “Some are good, so we keep on making them. Other avors turn out to be a learning experience.”

Käsemeister Creamery’s new cheese making facility features a retail shop. A window in the retail area allows visitors to view the cheese making process. Nearly every facet of the new creamery was built by members of Spink Colony. The

construction process took two years.

On cheese making days, milk is hauled the short distance from Spink Colony’s dairy barn to Käsemeister Creamery.

The milk is pasteurized, then pumped into their main cheese vat.

“Our largest cheese vat can hold 13,000 pounds of milk, which is about what our dairy herd produces in four milkings,” Jeremy said.

Käsemeister Creamery has begun to market their cheeses at stores and supermarkets across the region.

“We are adding more retailers all the time,” Jeremy said. “We have found that people really like our unique cheeses and the fact that they are being produced locally.”

Quality cheese begins with quality milk. This is not lost on Eli Wipf, the dairy herd manager at Spink Colony.

“We began to use the ProCross crossbreeding program several years ago,” Eli said. “We feel that ProCross

“Our dairy barn is 35 years old,” Eli said. “Our Holstein cows had gotten so big that they no longer t into our freestalls. The average longevity of our cows was declining, and we were having lots of feet and leg problems.

The ProCross cows are a lot hardier and breed back easier than our Holsteins.

Their calves almost raise themselves.

The dairy herd at Spink Colony is averaging 74 pounds of milk per head per day with 4.1 percent butterfat and 3.46 percent protein. Their somatic cell count remains at or below the 200,000 mark.

Spink Colony feeds out all of their steers, selling them as fat cattle at 15 months of age. Thanks to their multicolored genetics, their fattened steers and cull cows fetch beef cattle prices at the auction barn.

“When we select our sires, the rst thing we look at is their BB casein genetics and the presence of the A2/A2 trait,” Eli said. “The BB casein gene is responsible for higher cheese yields from our milk. And if the Midwest should someday become the source for A2/A2 dairy products, we want to be ahead of the curve.”

Spink Colony has also made the choice to grow non-GMO grains and forages for their dairy herd.

“We have planted non-GMO alfalfa, corn and silage corn that we will be feeding to our milk cows,” Eli said. “We try to be as natural as possible when it comes to treating herd health issues. These are things that our consumers want. We are simply providing them.”

Looking out past the horizon, Spink Colony has high hopes for Käsemeister Creamery.

“If the creamery proves to be successful, I hope that someday we can build a new dairy barn,” Eli said.

“Putting robotic milkers in the new dairy facility would be a no-brainer. We have a lot of other things that we could be doing instead of spending all those hours each day in the milking parlor.

Robots are more consistent when it comes to milking procedures and can collect reams of data about our cows in real time.”

Jeremy agreed.

“My hope is that we get to the point where we sell so much cheese that we use up all of the milk that our dairy herd can produce,” Jeremy said. “We want to continue to add value to our milk and create more opportunities for members of our community.”

Class III prices up 71 cents from April

Happy June Dairy Month, though it’s not too happy for dairy producers struggling to make ends meet.

The May Federal order Class III benchmark milk price was announced May 31 at $15.18 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 71 cents from April but still 39 cents below May 2017, though it is the highest Class III price since December 2017. It equates to about $1.31 per gallon, up from $1.24 in April.

The ve month Class III average stands at $14.25, down from $16.05 at this point a year ago but compares to $13.53 in 2016.

Class III futures late Friday morning portend a June Dairy Month Class III price of $15.51 per cwt.; July, $16.22; and August at $16.79, with a peak of $16.94 in September.

The May Class IV price is $14.57, up $1.09 from April, 8 cents above a year ago, and the highest it has been since October 2017. Its ve month average is at $13.42, down from $14.92 a year ago and compares to $13.06 in 2016.

California’s May Class 4a and 4b prices were announced June 1 after our deadline. I’ll have complete details next week.

The tough times on the farm was more evident in the Agriculture Department’s latest Ag Prices report.

The report showed another gain in the U.S. All Milk price average but that was overwhelmed by a sharp rise in the alfalfa hay price and increases in corn and soybeans, thereby sending the April milk feed price ratio lower for the fth month in a row. The April ratio is at 1.90 down from 1.97 in March and compares to 2.22 in April 2017.

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration consisting of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. In other words, one pound of milk today purchases just 1.9 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The U.S. All-Milk price averaged $15.80 per cwt., up 20 cents from March but that’s still 70 cents below April 2017. Michigan again showed the bottom price at $14.50, with California at $15.26, up 40 cents from March, and Wisconsin at $16.30, up a dime.

April corn averaged $3.58 per bushel, up 7 cents from March and 15 cents per bushel above April 2017.

Soybeans averaged $9.83 per bushel, up 2 cents per bushel from March and 50 cents per bushel above a year ago. Alfalfa hay averaged $183 per ton, up $17 from March, and $33 per ton above a year ago.

Margin Protection Program (MPP) calculation. The Daily Dairy Report says the margin was the lowest since June 2016’s $5.75 per cwt.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the April cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $67.50 per cwt., down $1.40 from March, $4.70 below April 2017 and $4.10 below the 2011 base average of $71.60 per cwt.

The cash dairy markets ended the Memorial Day holiday-shortened week with block Cheddar at $1.5975 per pound, down 1 1/4-cents on the week, 10 1/4-cents below a year ago, and 6 1/4-cents lower than it was on May 1, as the week’s global politics may have inuenced traders some. More on that ahead.

The barrels nished at $1.52, down 2 1/2-cents on the week, 3 cents above a year ago, but 8 1/4-cents below its May 1 perch. There were 7 cars of block that traded hands on the week at the CME and 26 of barrel.

Cheese demand reports suggest a steady to slower market for most types of processors, according to Dairy Market News, with the exception of cheese curd makers. The seasonal return of fairs and street festivals has renewed cheese curd buying vigor. Although heat and humidity in the Midwest had some contacts questioning near term milk availability, there was no shortage Memorial Week. A growing amount of cheesemakers took to the spot milk market, as loads ranged $4 to $5 under Class. Cheese production is ramping up as a result but the market tone is “somewhat stable,” according to DMN. Western cheese output is active as some of the available uid milk clears to cheese plants but the cheese market seems to be balanced, says DMN. Prices have been up and down in the last weeks but they haven’t deviated much. Cheese inventories are up, but staying manageable. Domestic and international sales are solid and the U.S. cheese market is currently very competitive as U.S. prices continue below international prices. However, some contacts are worried that an upsurge in the exchange rate might negatively affect export demand. Others believe that the price gap between the EU and the U.S. is big enough that an increase in the value of the dollar won’t have much effect on export sales.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski provides an interesting sidelight in his May 29 Early Morning Update that “rBST is almost history across the country. Several major cheese manufactures have recently pulled their producers off of rBST. This time around western dairy producers will be taking the brunt of the hit. Producers with Jersey herds will be impacted much more dramatically than their Holstein herd peers. It will take several months to get a good idea of the overall impact,

but this should curb surplus milk production from these producers supplying processors.” “Although one thing is clear, the past few years of mediocre milk prices has caused the US dairy producer to only become more efcient at milking cows,” according to Kurzawski.

Cash butter climbed to $2.4250 per pound Tuesday but closed Friday at $2.3775, down 3 3/4-cents on the week, 10 3/4-cents below a year ago when it jumped 12 1/2-cents, but is 1 3/4-cents above where it was on May 1. A whopping 65 cars were sold on the week at the CME, 32 on Friday alone.

DMN says the butter markets reacted to the NASS Cold Storage increases as many contacts expected them to: “indifferently, if not bullishly.” Upper Midwest butter makers report that cream is unexpectedly tight and buying interest remains generally healthy in both salted and unsalted varieties.

Western butter remains active. Although ice cream manufacturers are pulling more cream, there is still plenty to keep the churns busy. Butter inventories are growing along seasonal patterns and contacts say current domestic demand is solid. International demand ebbs and ows. Inquiries from global buyers are not unlimited, and “U.S. butter makers feel there is a lot of tire kicking going on. The U.S. butter price may be favorable when compared to international butter prices, however, the work involved with converting the butterfat to a form acceptable to international interests gives some U.S. manufacturers a pause,” says DMN. Spot Grade A nonfat dry milk closed the week at 82 1/2-cents per pound, down 1 3/4-cents on the week, 12 1/4-cents below a year ago, and dead even with its May 1 price. There were 6 cars that exchanged hands on the week.

The CME’s newest addition, dry whey, had a good week, hitting a new high of 39 cents per pound Thursday but it inched back Friday to close at 38 1/2-cents, 1 1/4-cents higher on the week, with 9 cars being sold the four days of trading.

An outbreak of Mycoplasma bovis in New Zealand has drawn a lot of attention in the industry and HighGround Dairy’s Manager of Dairy Market Intelligence, Alyssa Badger, talked about it in the May 28 Dairy Radio Now interview.

Badger says ofcials believe the outbreak occurred on a farm on the South Island but said it’s hard to know for sure because producers are forcing ministry ofcials to obtain police warrants or court orders to get on farms. She said the reaction is “very disappointing because all they want to do is eradicate this disease.”

The pattern they have seen is that they nd a trace of M-bovis in some of the older cows and then suddenly disappears “so they’re still trying to learn how to handle this.” Badger believes the government will continue efforts to eradicate the disease because it’s affecting the young and stressing them. She believes that New Zealand and Norway were the only two countries that had not seen M-bovis before.

When asked what impact this outbreak will have on New Zealand milk production and possibly the global market, Badger replied, “The effect will be little to none because most of the cows getting culled aren’t in milk yet or they were the stressed cows that weren’t in milk anyway.” Weather will have the biggest impact, according to Badger, and Fonterra’s $7 per kilogram of milk solids milk price announcement for the 2018/19 season is “going to signal to the farmers to push as much milk out as possible so ultimately this disease really isn’t going to have much of an impact on milk production at all.”

Back home; the USDA’s latest Crop Progress report shows that 92 percent of the nation’s corn has been planted, as of the week ending May 27, up 2 percent from that week a year ago and the ve year average. It also shows 79 percent is rated in good to excellent condition, up from 65 percent a year ago.

The report also shows 77 percent of the soybeans have been planted, up from 65 percent a year ago and compares to 62 percent in the ve year average. There is 47 percent of the crop emerged, up 8 percent from a year ago and 15 percent ahead of the ve year average.

Cotton planting is at 62 percent, up 1 percent from a year ago and 3 percent ahead of the ve year average.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) member cooperatives accepted offers of export assistance that helped them capture contracts to sell 202,825 pounds of Cheddar cheese, 1.66 million pounds of butter and 2.646 million pounds of whole milk powder, to customers in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania.

The product has been contracted for delivery through October and raised CWT’s 2018 exports to 35.36 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 11.035 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 10.18 million pounds of whole milk powder to 25 countries on ve continents.

In politics; the words “Trade War” have returned and with them, retaliatory tariff threats, following the Trump Administration’s decision to lift exemptions on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and the EU. Mexico specied retaliatory tariffs on steel, pork legs, sausages, apples, grapes, cranberries, and various cheeses effective June 1.

FC Stone points out that “This is the rst time in the Trump era that cheese is on the negotiating table.

Will it matter? We don’t know yet.”

The May 31 Daily Dairy Report stated “If history serves as a guide, Mexico would likely focus its tariffs on Cheddar and Gouda from the United States.

Through the rst quarter of this year, the United States has shipped 26,638 metric tons (MT), or 58.7 million pounds of cheese to Mexico, which accounted for 27.6 percent of total exports. Mexico remains the top cheese trade partner for the United States.”

for June 22. National Milk’s Chris Galen says the expectation is that by then, immigration legislation, which conservatives who voted against the farm bill want to have dealt with rst, will get a vote. He says we should know more once the House and Senate return from the Memorial Day break.

The Senate, the Agriculture Committee has been working more slowly than the House, according to Galen, but a vote in committee is likely in June as well.

Proposed changes to the dairy title of the Farm Bill don’t hold a lot of hope for dairy producers, according to Arden Tewksbury, manager of the Progressive Agriculture Association. Tewksbury points out that “With prices being paid to dairy farmers still lingering far behind the national average cost of producing milk, and where it appears there is no real effort being made to give dairy farmers a fair price for their milk, Pro-Ag is therefore urging the Senate Agriculture Committee to immediately take appropriate action to place a oor price under milk that is used to manufacture dairy

products.”

The proposal would establish a oor price at $16 per cwt. on July 1, 2018, followed by the price being set at $18 per cwt. on September 1, 2018, and $20 on November 1st, 2018.

Tewksbury wrote: “I believe with school soon to be dismissed for the summer, additional milk would have to be marketed otherwise. Our $20 oor price is very defensible. Anything less than this program will only continue the exiting of hundreds (if not thousands) of more dairy farmers this summer.”

Pro-Ag called on the Senate Agriculture Committee to “take leadership on our proposal, and hopefully the House members will follow their proposed actions.”

The proposal also suggests consideration of a supply management program “to be implemented similar to the program contained in the Federal Milk Marketing Improvement Act, identied as S-1640.

This program would be administered only when needed (which might be immediately),” Tewksbury warned.

DairyVisor Inc. is a private corporation based in Glenwood, MN. DVi provides a full range of commodity trading products and consulting services to large scale grain and dairy operations.

After seeing a strong run up in feed and grain prices this spring due to production concerns in South America, futures and cash prices are taking back some of the risk premium that was built into them. Early USDA Crop Progress reports are confirming that the growing crop is off to a better than average start. Although crop condition ratings this early in the year impact prices, the reality is crops still have a lot of weather to deal with through the growing season.

Tariff on, tariff off! Trading partners continue to react to tariff announcements, as they release their own retaliatory tariffs. Round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows. As talks take place there will be winners and losers. Since the first of the year the biggest loser has been soybean meal, as prices have been up as much as 20% from early year lows.

Recent feed and grain price rallies have helped provide price support to the dairy markets. As grain prices soften, milk futures have reacted relative to the direct impact this is having on the input side of the margin equation. For

producers that do not have a full understanding of how efficient the futures market can be, watch the milk/feed price moves to get a good lesson.

Keep in mind that the futures markets job is to find a fair commodity value that perfectly balances supply to the needs of buyers. Over a longer period Ag commodity futures will tend to come back to a value that reflects a price that limits expansion or supply contraction. Basically a break even value.

Current milk market values are moving higher and lower as the feed cost side of the equation changes to maintain that perfect dairy producer margin. Based on what we are seeing in our client group the market wants to function at or slightly above breakeven for the second half of the year forward. When this price relationship changes, producers will know that the market needs more milk or less.

Massachusetts dairy adds store, bakery to diversify

HADLEY, Mass.

– Passing the farm on to the next generation of family members is often a goal of family owned and operated agricultural enterprises. For the Barstow family of Hadley, Mass., the baton of farming is now being carried to the sixth and seventh generation with the help of diversication.

“Dairy farming in Massachusetts is becoming

an anomaly,” Denise Barstow said. “We are determined to continue to provide local food to our community and sustain our 212-year-old family business.”

Barstow’s Longview Farm was founded in 1806 and is owned and operated by the sixth and seventh generation of Barstow family members.

In addition to the 500-head Holstein herd, the family operates Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery.

Barstow – the sixth generation – and Steven Barstow II – the seventh generation – as well as four farmhands operate all aspects of the farm. Caroline Barstow, Steven’s wife, works as a veterinarian. Sisters Shannon and Kelly Barstow manage the store, bakery, kitchen and staff. Denise manages the farm’s marketing and educational events.

Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery was founded June 30, 2008 after realizing a need to expand their farm amidst a sluggish milk market in the early 2000s, Denise said.

“The farm stand has become an integral part of our family’s story and our community,” she said.

The family also guides tours and offers events to promote dairy, local food and agriculture in New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island).

“We are always looking for new methods and technologies to be more efcient, more sustainable, to give back to our community, land and animals, and to simply stay in business,” Denise said.

The 280-head milking herd is producing 22,000 pounds of milk daily with the average cow producing 82 pounds per day. All of their milk is shipped to Cabot Creamery/AgriMark Cooperative, West Springeld, Mass.

The family grows corn, alfalfa and hay on 450 acres of owned and rented land.

Some grain is purchased to supplement. They also buy cranberry hulls and cull potatoes for feed as a plantbased sugar and added starch for winter, respectively.

The family has incorporated modern technology to pave way for the future of their farm. They installed ve Lely Astronaut A4 milking robots in 2014.

What used to be a 4 a.m. milking in their double-7 parallel parlor has transitioned to days on the farm beginning at 5:30 with the help of the robots. The bakers arrive on the farm to turn the ovens on at 4:30 a.m. and open the store by 6 a.m. In the afternoons, chores are completed while Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery sees an inux of visitors for lunch and ice cream.

“Of course, every day is different, and we always have to be ready to stay late or come back for farm emergencies,” Denise said. “So is the nature of the job, but I don’t think we would change it for a second.”

The farm implemented an anaerobic digester in 2013. The digester uses the farm’s manure and over 14,000 tons of food waste annually from area manufacturers and processors to create electricity, heat and fertilizer.

In addition, when Cabot supplies the farm with organic by-products from butter and milk production, the farm sends power to the Cabot plant in the form of renewable energy credits. The digester also produces fertilizer for the farm’s acreage.

“The chemical-free fertilizer grows more hay and corn so there is more milk to go back to Cabot for butter production, and that is the closed loop supply chain,” Denise said. … “So, while our milk is in many products, our power is in the butter.”

Denise said the recent milk price the farm received was $16.80 per hundredweight. Despite a less-thanbreak-even price, the Barstows are able to support six family members and their families with off-the-farm income.

Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery and the digester supplement the farm’s income as well.

“We would love for the farm to support not only our family, but itself,” Denise said. “The price of milk is so low it does not cover the cost of doing business.”

The farm also sells beef, compost and barn equipment. Revenue from

farm tours help to cover costs and curate customers, too.

“We realize that an educated consumer is the best way to promote and sustain dairy and our dairy farm in the long run,” Denise said.

With many aspects of the farm to tend to, the Barstows are focused on animal nutrition, health and comfort.

“By simply paying attention and putting our herd rst, they do the rest of the work – create wholesome, quality milk high in protein and butterfat,” Denise said.

Barstow Longview Farm is located in an area home to ve colleges. As such, availability of agricultural land is dwindling.

“Many farms in Massachusetts, like ours, are driving … miles from the farm on busy rural roads with farm equipment to plant and harvest crops on land that is for sale for development,” Denise said.

“We have watched corn and alfalfa elds that we rent be sold, and they’ve broken ground on their new house, solar eld or parking lot months before harvest time. We are farming a patchwork of giant lawns, private property and elds abutting golf courses, malls and housing developments. Our largest eld is only 60 acres.”

Despite pouring their life’s work into their farm, the Barstow family knows they have challenges looming.

But as the family has been doing for the last 212 years, the current and future generations of Barstows will diversify and do what they need to do to succeed.

“Dairy farming isn’t just our job, it’s a way of life,” Denise said. “It is our past, present and future. Milk is an affordable, local food that provides essential nutrients to our community. We are proud to play this role in our greater ecosystem. This is what our family has been doing for generations. In the dayto-day of feeding cows, mucking stalls and harvesting hay, there is legacy. We are protecting open space, caring for the land and soil, and preserving this land, story and way of life for generations to come.”

A day in the life of the Mark family

June 4 brings sunny skies for working on rst crop alfalfa

ELMWOOD, Wis. – Mother Nature had not been working in the Mark family’s favor for about a week, but on June 4, she cooperated with a sunny day and slight breeze to allow the Marks to keep going on their rst crop alfalfa.

“Haying has been difcult,” Todd Mark said. “Mother Nature has been ornery.”

June 4 started about 3 a.m. with one of three milking shifts. Employee, Rebecca Robey, takes care of the early morning routine with another employee in charge of the 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. shifts. Robey is one of three nonfamily employees.

“And Bryce has been doing a lot more lately, both on and off the farm,” Billy said.

Bryce went to school for an early morning weight lifting session. Natalie also had an early morning cheerleader practice before she spent the day babysitting. She also works at a nearby restaurant.

their herd three times a day since 1995.

“I like the extra production, but what really appealed to me was the extra eyes on the cows,” Todd said. “There were only a few hours a day they weren’t tended to for calving issues or other things.”

Production-wise, the herd averages between 27,000 and 29,000 pounds of milk.

When Todd arrived to the barn a little later in the morning, he checked in with Rebecca and then went to the freestall barn to check the herd – watching for heat and health problems. He also washed out the waterers, made sure the automatic alley scrapers were

working properly and ran the manure pump. Most mornings he will A.I. any cows if necessary, but had not found any that day.

When breeding cows, Todd said he likes a balance of type and milk, along with watching daughter pregnancy rate. And about two-thirds of the herd is registered. Throughout the years, the children have been involved in the 4-H dairy project – both showing and dairy judging – at the local level.

“The last few years they’ve done pretty well showing,” Todd said.

into a problem – the 2,000-gallon bulk tank was full and there were still 16 cows left to milk.

“We’ll have to go to once-a-day pick up for awhile,” Todd said. “We freshened a lot of cows recently and their production is starting to pick up. The past few days of cooler weather helps. They’re just getting to their peak.”

Todd called his trucker to make a special stop so they could nish morning milking. Robey needed to leave so Todd and Bryce milked the nal group of cows in the family’s swing-8 parlor, which the family installed in spring of 2006.

“It’s nothing fancy and it’s low maintenance,” Todd said.

They retrotted the parlor into an area that had been loose housing for heifers. It’s attached to the original tiestall barn, which they turned into the holding pen.

“When I started dairy farming, I milked 30 cows.

After a few years, it was pretty clear I couldn’t stay at 30 cows and stay competitive,” Todd said about why he built the parlor and increased his herd numbers.

Todd bought the dairy in 1990 at the age of 24. He had grown up in a dairying family, ran a neighboring dairy on shares after high school, and then ventured out to buy his own farm. Shortly after buying it, he met the previous owners’ daughter, Billy. One year later they were married.

“It’s very exible, which is nice,” she said.

After feeding, Todd and Bryce checked the hay to make sure it was dry before starting the afternoon of chopping.

“I tried to beat the rain last week, but got caught in the middle,” said Todd, who had

40 acres cut before it rained.

“That will be heifer feed.”

While Todd said rst crop tonnage is good, the quality is not as good.

Along with alfalfa, the Marks grow corn and forage barley as a cover crop on their 260 acres of owned and rented land. All their alfalfa is chopped into bags.

They spent most of the afternoon nishing up chopping before cutting more alfalfa to

potentially chop the next day.

At this time, Todd said he is not sure of the farm’s future.

“We’re in limbo to see what Bryce wants to do,” Todd said.

If Bryce decides dairy farming is the direction he will take, the Marks may add onto the barn, which would be room for about 40 more cows.

But Todd is not in a rush as Bryce goes through high school in the upcoming years.

“The farm is very suited for dairy with the way the land rolls,” Todd said.

He gave his thoughts about the current dairy economy and low milk price.

“Low milk price isn’t what gets you in trouble,” he said.

“It’s what you do when things are good that gets you through the bad price. I try to control my expenses and run a tight ship.”

He also follows a simple philosophy.

“Never be satised,” he said. “There’s always a place to improve.”

Other than milk price, another challenge Todd has faced is nding quality help.

“I’m sitting good right now, but there’s always the unexpected that shows up and it’s hard,” said Todd, who at times has done all three milkings

himself.

While the milk price does not make dairy farming easy, Todd said it is still an enjoyable career.

“I don’t think I could get up and do the same thing every day,” he said. “There’s always a new challenge in dairy farming.”

While June 4 had a few unexpected turns – rst with the bulk tank lling and a few equipment repairs – they were challenges the Mark family could handle.

They ended the night knowing the next day would bring new challenges to face.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – As the warmer months are underway, discussing grazing potential is a key aspect in successfully pasture grazing dairy cattle.

“Opportunity here is almost endless,” said Kent Solberg, livestock and grazing specialist for Sustainable Farming Association.

Over 30 bankers, University of Minnesota extension employees, farmers, nutritionists, agriculture consultants, master grazers and graduate students gathered at Molitor Organic Farm near St. Cloud May 24 to discuss grazing and how this helps nancial success for dairy farmers.

Brad Heins, University of Minnesota Dairy Scientist, opened the afternoon with discussion focusing on grazing potential.

In this case, grazing potential refers to managing pasture crop growth, improving soil health, improving pasture fertility, controlling weed growth and improving pasture maintenance.

“Know the nutritional value of grasses,” Heins said. “Test your grasses at least three times per year, not only about height, but diversity and density.”

The goal of pasture feeding is to have a high nutritional value with types of grasses, often including a variety of plants.

“A mixture of grasses can produce more, helping cows have a more wellbalanced diet,” Heins said.

Diversity is key in grazing. Solberg recommends at least 10- to 14-way pasture mixes and 20- to 30-way cover crop blends on grazing elds.

“There is a chemical communication between plants when they are stressed,” Solberg said. “Polycultures tend to outperform monocultures during stressful environmental conditions.”

Solberg related diversity to a shotgun approach, meaning plant a lot and hope it grows.

“This does not mean all combinations will work, but it can stimulate soil health,” Solberg said.

In addition to diversity, farms are dependent on soil fertility as growing quality grass is reliant on a healthy soil type.

Heins recommends investing in a soil test on pastures.

“We do a corn, soybeans, pasture rotation,” Heins said. “This results in positive forage quality, good grazing, a positive trend of fertility and a positive trend to increase soil health.”

Heins recommends a permanent pasture and cool season grasses.

“Warm season work takes a lot of tillage and may not be good for soil health,” Heins said.

Organic dairy farmer and owner of the host farm Joe Molitor agreed.

“We do not do summer annuals,” Molitor said. “You have got to have the water.”

Following the discussion, Molitor took attendees on a pasture walk through his eld while discussing his farms grazing rotations and potential.

The rst eld was a diverse pasture with orchard grass and some ryegrass.

“It is half the thickness it should be,” Molitor said. “If we wait 10 days, it will be perfect.”

Molitor said it is a good pasture for heifers.

“This eld has a relative feed value of 180,” Molitor said. “There is too much fertility on this eld. I would only get one and a half milkings on this eld.”

cows, but do not have enough quality pastureland to feed cows 100 percent grass; therefore, 30 percent of the cows ration is grass.

The family has their own weather station and watches the weather so that they can monitor moisture and feed the cows high quality forages.

Along with utilizing the weather station, Molitor monitors cow behavior and makes decisions to improve the cow ration or forage quality.

“If cows are not lying down, feed quality is not good enough or they didn’t eat enough,” Molitor said.

According to the University of Minnesota, a cows grazing is not limited to a period of time the forages are actively growing, but rather a time quality forage can be available to cows.

Farmers today are looking to extend the grazing season by planting different plants later in the year.

Throughout the grazing season for the Molitors, each eld can be utilized for ve rotations of grazing.

According to Molitor, high quality elds can give their cows enough energy to produce for two milkings.

Members of the apprenticeship must have a minimum of ve years experience in grazing and complete 4,000 hours of training over a two-year program.

Throughout the program, members share knowledge and skills, develop skills, receive professional support, explore new ideas and make a difference in their operation.

“You don’t have to be organic to graze,” Solberg said. “Even if you just graze heifers, you can see a nancial benet.”

Those in the dairy industry are experiencing economic stress and farmers need to look for a change.

“We are in radical times and measures in dairy to keep it aoat,” Solberg said. “Don’t discount anything.

Morel mushrooms a delicacy on Crawford County farm

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. – Alan Flansburgh lives in prime hunting country. Deer are plentiful, as are wild turkeys.

When the month of May rolls around, Flansburgh’s favorite quarry is a form of wildlife that sports neither fur nor feathers. In fact, it looks more like a misplaced sponge. Morel mushrooms are sometimes called sponge mushrooms.

Whenever the 120 milking Holsteins and his crops let him, Alan heads for the hills and takes to the woods in pursuit of the elusive fungi.

He and his wife, Kathy, and son, Devin, live and work in what some folks believe is the best place on the planet to nd morels: southwest Wisconsin’s Crawford County.

In fact, the small town of Muscoda, Wis., several miles southeast of the Flansburghs’ Green Valley Farm, has

dubbed itself, “Wisconsin’s Morel Mushroom Capital.” Around the middle of May, the village holds a festival that draws thousands of morel maniacs.

The Flansburgh family celebrates morels in its own way, by pursuing them. Alan and Kathy have four sons who do not farm – Derek, Dustin, Dylan and Dalton. But they live on the 370-acre operation and pitch in with the farm work and also stalk morels when time allows.

Flansburgh, 56, has been shroomin, as the act of nding mushrooms is sometimes called, since he was a kid.

Forty-six years of morel experience has given him a good idea of where to nd the delectable fungi.

“It always seems like you nd mushrooms by an elm tree that’s been dead two years,” Flansburgh said.

But nding dead elms of the right size is becoming more of a challenge.

“There aren’t that many dead elms anymore,” Alan said.

Some are cut down for rewood, but that might happen after the tree is past its morelproducing prime anyway.

Alan said too many elm trees are succumbing to death while they are yet too small to contribute to the soil characteristics that morels need to grow.

Flansburgh said it takes a good-sized elm to provide the perfect conditions for the symbiotic relationship between tree and morels.

An hour-long mushroom hunting trip on a May morning gave credence to his belief.

At midmorning, Flansburgh headed his utility vehicle down the farm’s driveway.

Down the road, he made a right turn into a grassy eld.

At the top of the hill, he stopped near the stump of an elm that had been felled last fall.

Flansburgh’s eagle eyes began to discern morels.

“There’s one here, one here and one here,” he said.

In short order he located two more mushrooms hiding in the grass or under slabs of elm bark that had sloughed off the tree. Four of the fungi were big yellows, so called for their color. The fth was a fat gray. Flansburgh deemed the large gray his prize of the day.

He also said the tree was not the usual American elm. Instead it was a Chinese elm, more commonly found in yards. Somehow, a seed drifted to the top of the hill and made a life for itself.

Flansburgh tucked his quintet of morels into a plastic grocery bag. Then it was onward, driving farther into the sun-and-shade-dappled woods.

Flansburgh’s second stop was another elm stump that had been harvested for rewood. Slabs of bark littered the ground.

At this spot, Flansburgh again picked his way through the prickly ash, brambles and sticks on the ground. Like the rst spot, this one had more than just

a dead elm going for it. For one thing, it faced south, meaning it gets lots of sunshine.

And, being near the top of a hill, it receives light early in the morning. That lets the soil warm earlier than the ground in the valley or down the hillside. Early warming ground contributes to early ushes of morels, Flansburgh said.

This particular spot proved worthwhile. Alan found a few morels that had been attened, most likely by the boots of the turkey hunter the farmer lets pursue the bronze-backs there.

That hunter also picked a nice mess of morels up on the hill a few days earlier. As an act of diplomacy and thanks, the hunter, Flansburgh said, gives him a gift certicate to a steakhouse in Prairie du Chien.

It did not take long for Flansburgh to locate morels by this second stump.

A big yellow hid under a slab of bark.

Behind the stump, a pair of big yellows growing side by side practically screamed to be found.

“They’re just amazing how they can hide,” Flansburgh said of morels.

“Then they just appear out of nowhere.”

Ultimately, Flansburgh plucked 30 morels. He said he found 20 there a few days earlier.

“The most I’ve ever found under one dead elm was probably a grocery bag full,” Flansburgh said. “That was a lot of mushrooms under one tree. Once every 10 years I nd something like that.”

Some people insist morels should be hauled home in mesh bags instead of plastic ones, because those foragers believe the mesh lets the mushroom release their spores into the air, seeding the land for future crops.

Flansburgh said the mesh bag theory might be only a myth.

“But, I’ve left some big yellows for next year,” Flansburgh said. “I don’t know if it made a difference.”

Back home, Flansburgh dumped the morning’s haul on the kitchen table.

Kathy would later place some into a cardboard box, as a treat to send to her sister in Dallas, Texas.

The rest would get a saltwater soak overnight, to encourage bugs and any other critters living in the morels to leave. Then the mushrooms would be sliced in half lengthwise and either rolled in our and fried in butter or sautéed in butter and served with scrambled eggs.

When asked what he likes about morel hunting, Flansburgh said, “Getting out in the woods and walking and getting some exercise.”

He left out the thrill of nding the fungi and the avor of one of the spring woods’ nest foods.

A smooth collection Ronningen has hobby of acquiring antique road graders

WEST CONCORD, Minn. – After buying his rst two antique road graders for fun, Kelly Ronningen just could not stop.

“Once you’ve got two, you’re a collector,” he said.

“It opened up a whole world.

Who would have guessed there would be that many?”

Ronningen’s road grader collection now numbers 24.

Most of them sit in a line on display in a small pasture on the 120-cow dairy he operates with his son near West

Concord, Minn.

To keep his collection focused, Ronningen has chosen only to pursue road graders manufactured by J.D. Adams and Company, with the exception of one that was made by the C.D. Edwards Manufacturing Company based in Albert Lea, Minn.

The man who founded J.D. Adams and Company, which was based in Indianapolis, invented the rst leaning-wheel pull grader, Ronningen said.

“They were all custom built,” said Ronningen, who has gained a plethora of knowledge about the equipment after

Ronningen also keeps the majority of his collection focused on earlier road graders, most likely built between the early 1890s and the early 1930s.

“After the ‘30s, hydraulics and tractors came into play,” Ronningen said. “At rst it was done with hand cranks. I always wanted to stay away from motor [road] graders.”

Pull-type graders and ones operated by horses are Ronningen’s preference. He feels they are more rare.

The collection includes a variety of types and sizes – ones that would only need two or three horses to power it along with ones that required six to eight and two people.

“With that many horses, you would need one person just to handle the team of horses,”

Ronningen said.

Most of the small ones are called maintainers. They were most likely owned by townships for smoothing bumps and potholes, and only needed one person to operate.

“They don’t have as many bells and whistles,” he said.

There is also one in the collection that Ronningen guesses is one of the rst reversible road graders, which means the blade can turn left or right, and one that has a cab on it with solid rubber tires unlike the steel tires most had. This is one of Ronningen’s favorites.

“It’s probably the only one like it in the world is what I’m thinking,” Ronningen said. “When I saw it on eBay, and it came with tracks, I had to buy it.”

He also has two other prized motor road graders along with one he modied with a motor and hydraulics to hook to a tractor to be able to use on the dairy for smoothing the driveways.

At the age of 10, Ronningen had his rst encounter with an antique road grader when his dad borrowed one from a neighbor to x the driveway.

“It was pretty neat,” Ronningen said about the memory. “It was fun to watch him work.”

Ronningen’s dad operated a road grader for the township in about 1930.

In the mid 1980s, Ronningen saw an old road grader at a farm auction near Chateld, Minn.

“I thought it would be fun to have it,” Ronningen said.

But the farmer was not going to sell. After visiting him a few more times in the following years, the farmer sold Ronningen the rst road grader of his collection.

Not too long after, Ronningen’s wife saw one for sale near New Prague, Minn.

“I needed to see if it was the same one I had,” Ronningen said.

It was not the same model number, but it was the same manufacturer. It became his second road grader purchase.

From there, Ronningen gained a new hobby and started searching for more.

“I’ve gone all over the country to get them,” Ronningen said.

While he keeps most of his road graders for himself, he has shared his love of the old iron with others. One he purchased is now on permanent display at the Little Log House Antique Power Show in Hastings, Minn.

About 10 years ago, he attended the Historical Construction Equipment

Association national convention for road grader collectors held at the Le Sueur Pioneer Power Show in Le Sueur, Minn. He brought along one of his graders and a team of horses to pull it. The convention will be held again this year in the same location, and Ronningen hopes to attend again.

People around him have helped with his hobby.

“All my friends send me emails and texts when they nd a road grader,” Ronningen said.

And when Ronningen and his wife, Joann, are traveling, she keeps her eyes open for old iron.

“Joann has gotten really good at spotting road graders in tree and fence lines,” he said.

Since buying his rst one, Ronningen has enjoyed his venture into being a collector.

“I just like the fact that it’s unique,” he said about choosing road graders.

“Everybody collects tractors and spoons.”

And even though Ronningen could make his money back if he sold his collection, ultimately he would love for them to be in a safe place all together.

“I would love to nd a museum that would take them all,” he said.

Farm still going 163 years later Bloomer continues family’s fourgeneration career

MORRISTOWN, Minn.

– When it comes to farming, the Bloomer family has been in it for the long haul.

Brian Bloomer is the fourth generation to run his family’s farm, which includes 40 dairy cows, near Morristown, Minn. Although his parents, Harold and Harlean, call themselves retired, they still help on the farm if needed at the ages of 91 and 83, respectively.

Harold runs the skidloader almost every day and does eldwork, and Harlean helps with calf chores.

Homesteaded in 1855, the farm the Bloomer family settled on has been their own since before the Civil War. An area where a small building used to sit on their property close to a creek serves as a reminder of that rst generation settling on unfamiliar territory.

Most of Harold’s memories on the farm start at the age of 8, when he moved

back to the farm. Before that, he lived with an aunt and uncle in town because his mom passed away when he was born. Like many farms at that time, his family’s homestead was diversied with cows, pigs, chickens and crops.

As the only boy in the family, Harold took over and started with 16 cows after graduating from high school in 1944.

“I just fell into it,” Harold said of his career. “Dad said to keep the farm in the family, so here I am.”

At rst cans were used to transport the milk of his starting herd of 16 cows before upgrading to a bulk tank.

The Army took him away from his farm for a few years, starting in 1952. During that time, a neighbor took the Bloomers’ cows so Harold would not have to sell them.

In 1957, Harold and Harlean married and the two continued their farming path. Harlean was used to the lifestyle. She, too, grew up on a farm, milking cows by hand in her younger years.

“She’s very strong,” Harold said. “You don’t want to tangle with her.”

They liked their livelihood they created as a family with their ve kids, who now range in age from 50 to 60 years old.

“They all had their chores,” Harold said.

to make time for family. They made it a priority to take a family vacation during the summer. A few of their most memorable get-aways include going to the Black Hills and Yellowstone National Park. They also traveled to Michigan and took a ferry across one of the Great Lakes.

Because of their ventures, Harold and Harlean have been to every state in the country.

“I’d rather be outside than work a job in town,” said Brian, who wanted to be a farmer or a veterinarian.

His earliest farm memories include bringing the cows in from the pasture. He and his siblings were in the barn since they were babies.

“We were always outside helping,” Brian said. “I liked being outdoors.”

In 1987, Brian and Russ took over the farm “They fell into it like I did,” Harold said.

Regardless of who was in charge, the family all came together during the summer to make small square bales of hay.

Harold and Harlean would take their pick of baling or raking while Brian stacked bales on the wagon.

Russ cut the hay and would later stack the hay in the haymow. But the process stopped two years ago. Now Brian makes round bales and wraps rst crop, a much more efcient way for him to put up feed.

The number of acres the family owns and runs has grown over the years. Now Brian has 580 tillable acres, raising corn, soybeans and alfalfa.

Last year, Russ unexpectedly passed away, leaving a void in their hearts and a larger amount of work on the farm for Brian. Because of this, Brian scaled down the herd size from 55 cows to 40. He also relies on neighbors and a niece and her husband to ll in where needed.

Despite this difculty amongst other ones in the industry, such as milk price, the Bloomer family farm keeps going.

Too hot for you? If it is, the temperature might be too high for your calves, too.

Dairy farmers can help their calves beat the heat, according to Penn State Extension. Dairy science professor Jud Heinrichs and research associate Colleen Jones offered strategies for helping calves beat the heat.

Studies show providing shade reduces the temperature inside hutches and lowers calves’ body temperatures and respiration rates, Heinrichs said. Provide shade by using a hutch with a solid roof, installing 80 percent shade cloth over a hutch or placing hutches in naturally shady spots.

Remember to provide a pen in front of each hutch. Or, use a tether so each calf can choose its own comfortable spot.

Place hutches and calf buildings so they catch the prevailing winds. Open-front buildings are often faced southeast, while hutches can be turned to face east during warm weather.

Open the vents on hutches and place a block under the back wall, to help air circulate. In one study, placing a concrete block under the back reduced the temperature and carbon dioxide level in the hutch and reduced calf respiratory rates.

As calves try to maintain their body temperatures, they lose water by sweating and increased respiration. There is not a lot of information on how much water calves need to drink in hot, humid weather. The amount of water they need depends on the temperature of the environment, plus the amount of starter the calf is eating and the amount of milk or replacer it is drinking.

An Iowa study of more than 33,000 observations of the amount of water calves drank was used to form equations to predict water intake.

Starter intake, environmental temperature and the amount of milk replacer fed were the three most important factors in predicting water intake. While starter intake accounted for 60 percent of the variation in water intake, this study found that calves increased their water intake exponentially as the daily high temperature increased.

And, when the temperature rose above 77 degrees Fahrenheit, calves drank more water no matter the amount of grain they were eating.

Whether calves are eating grain or not, they need to have access to water in hot weather. In addition, it may be critical to introduce each calf to water, to ensure that they understand that water is available.

Calves should be offered water the day they are born or the day after, Heinrichs said. Yet a survey by the United States Department of Agriculture found that calves averaged 15.3 days old when they were rst offered water.

“Calves less than 2 weeks of age are the most vulnerable to diarrhea, which can lead to rapid dehydration,” Heinrichs said. “If calves are scouring and no water is available, they are extremely vulnerable to heat stress. Again, this underscores the importance of providing fresh water to calves in the rst week of life.”

Calves eat less grain when they are heat stressed. This means it is important to encourage them to begin eating calf starter.

“Offer only small handfuls at each feeding until calves begin to eat starter,” Heinrichs said. “Remove uneaten starter and clean out wet or moldy feed daily, to maintain freshness.

A divider between the grain bucket and water bucket can help keep starter fresh longer by limiting the amount of transfer between the two buckets.”

Sand as bedding can help calves stay cooler by absorbing and dissipating their body heat. But in one study, calves bedded with straw gained 0.13 pound per day more than those bedded with sand.

“Regardless of the material used for bedding, the priority should be to provide a clean, dry area for calves to rest,” Jones said.

Try to handle calves in the morning, so stressful things happen to them when the air is cooler. Do not dehorn, vaccinate or move calves during the hottest part of the day.

Heinrichs said most Holstein calves should get more than 1 pound of milk replacer powder each day, based on the amount of energy they need to maintain their weight. When they are heat stressed, calves might eat less starter, so they need another energy source.

“Healthy calves are unlikely to refuse to drink milk, so there is an opportunity to increase the amount of energy provided by increasing the amount of liquid feed offered,” Heinrichs said. “At this point, there is little data to suggest how much milk replacer to add to help calves combat heat stress. It seems logical to conclude that programs that routinely feed more than 1 pound per day of powder, or 1 gallon of milk, are more likely to provide energy in excess of maintenance requirements over a broader range of environmental conditions. In addition, it appears that heat stress may be greater than cold stress in terms of limiting desired average daily gain in dairy calves.”

The crops look really good. The earlier planted corn is 6 inches tall. We made some hay June 4 and it was excellent. RAINFALL We chopped it and put TOTALS Last 2 it on a pile and it was 6 to 7 tons an acre on a Weeks haylage base. We had hauled a lot of manure on the field. All the dairy farmers in the area are 0.3” done with first crop hay. Guys are spraying corn and fertilizing. The Since April 25 soybeans are coming 3.7” out and stand about 2 to 3 inches tall. We could use a shot of rain again.

Fly Problem?

We got our alfalfa done last week. We baled our rye today (June 5), then worked the field and planted soybeans RAINFALL in it. It was the worst TOTALS Last 2 rye crop we ever had.

It wasn’t as tall as Weeks usual and the stems weren’t as thick. We chopped our 5- to 6-acre triticale field last 2.8” week. It was 33 inches tall. We planted silage corn on that field. We Since April 25 planted some corn two 4.5” weeks ago and now it’s 5 inches tall. We had a little hail last Tuesday.

I am spraying today (June 5) and plan to start cutting alfalfa tomorrow. We usually wrap all of first crop. RAINFALL Some of the haybines TOTALS got going the last two Last 2 days. We turned the Weeks irrigators off to do hay.

Usually when I finish hay, I put 0.5 inches of rain on the fields for 0.95” three straight nights.

We have everything planted and most of it is out of the ground. Since April 25 1.05” We’ve been irrigating; it’s dry here. Some of the neighbors’ fields are spotty because it’s dry.

We finished planting soybeans on May 25 and the canola a day later. The corn and soybeans are out of RAINFALL the ground and stand TOTALS about 2 to 4 inches Last 2 tall. We are going to Weeks cut first crop hay this week. The older stand looks pretty good, but the new stuff is a little 2.2” behind because of the earlier frost.

We’ll chop a lot of it because we only have 2 inches Since April 25 3.9” left in the silo. Many farmers in our area are spraying now.

We should finish our 150 acres of first crop alfalfa tonight. The stand was very good, except one field had a lot of dandelions. A RAINFALL lot of people are wrapping TOTALS up their hay. We have Last 2 everything planted and Weeks it’s emerged nicely. We were fortunate to get the rains when we needed them. We have some rock picking to do. The corn is pushing 7 to 8 inches tall. We had a hailstorm two weeks ago and it Since April 25 completely hailed out 30 2.15” acres of hay and took a corn field that was rowed to the point you couldn’t see any rows; but they came back nicely.

We just finished chopping our 150 acres of first cutting of alfalfa.

The yield was about 4 tons per acre and the RAINFALL quality was excellent. TOTALS We’re going to cut our Last 2 90 acres of heifer hay Weeks this week. We have about 75 acres of soybeans left to plant on some ground where 0.5” we’ve been spreading manure. It’s been warm and dry, with some rain over the past two Since April 25 1.8” weeks. The corn and the soybeans are looking really good, but it would be nice to get an inch or two of rain soon.

We’ve seeded down about 50 acres of new seeding alfalfa to replace the winterkill.

What survived the RAINFALL winterkill looks pretty TOTALS Last 2 rough and is pretty Weeks light in some spots.

About 30 miles west of here, a guy said he has the best ďŹ rst crop 1.3â€? he’s ever had, and he’s already putting it up. We’ve ďŹ nished Since April 25 our beans, about 90 5.9â€? acres, and have about 200 acres of corn in, which is about three-quarters ďŹ nished. We still need to get our slurry hauled.

We just ďŹ nished our ďŹ rst crop today and it’s beautiful.

It is awesome, the pure alfalfa is RAINFALL beautiful. The corn TOTALS is growing really Last 2 well. We’re going to Weeks start spraying our beans and we have the corn all sprayed.

All the crops look wonderful; if we keep getting showers here Since April 25 and there things 1.5â€? will be good. In another week we’ll be looking at topdressing the corn ďŹ elds with urea or nitrogen.

We ďŹ nally got rain. Last Wednesday (May 30) we had a soft, beautiful allday soaking rain and we actually ended up with RAINFALL 3.65 inches of rain for TOTALS the month of May. We’re Last 2 already at 1.4 inches for Weeks the month of June and it might rain again tonight.

I’m hoping it doesn’t because I’d like to get all my hay knocked down tomorrow (June 6). The hay is beautiful and there is a lot of it out there, but Since April 25 there are very few buds.

There’s been a lot of hay put up around us. We sprayed our corn today. We were on the cool side this past weekend; Sunday (June 3) never got above 54 degrees.

We’ve had just under 2 inches of rain in the past two weeks.

About 50 percent of our corn is in and RAINFALL TOTALS all our new seeding Last 2 alfalfa is ďŹ nished Weeks up. We’ll get the manure pit ďŹ nished up tomorrow (May 23) and plan to cut 2â€? the winter rye in the next week, as well as starting to cut hay Since April 25 when the weather 8â€? looks right.

Cereal treats Summer guests are always a welcomed company, but what can you serve for breakfast that isn’t just eggs again? A friend shared her recipe for baked oatmeal. Our morning chore crew loved it, even the next day when I served leftovers. I love the recipe because anything that calls for ice cream for breakfast has to be great.

There is nothing lazy about the days of summer on a farm. We are constantly running out the door to the next project. Here are some quick cereal snacks to grab on the go. The cookies freeze well. One way to help them last longer is to store them in plain sight. Linda gave me an oatmeal container the other day when she stopped by for a visit. I thought it was rather strange until I looked inside. She used an empty oatmeal container as a freezer cookie jar. She cut pieces of parchment paper to line between the stacked cookies. I put it in the freezer and the guys look right past anything remotely healthy, not realizing there are secret goodies waiting just for me. After you try these recipes, you should have an empty container and cookies to try out this trick. I save the paper liners in the container and when it is empty, you’re ready to ll it back up again.

Breakfast baked oatmeal Richael Weinend 3 cups rolled oats 1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. salt 2 eggs 1 cup milk 1/4 cup melted butter 1/4 cup applesauce 2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup raisins Combine the dry ingredients together. In a separate bowl, combine the wet ingredients. Mix together and pour into a greased 8- by 8-inch pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until top is golden brown. Serve warm. Top with ice cream, milk or syrup.

Cinnamon-cranberry oat bars 3 cups quick cooking oats 1 1/2 cup Rice Krispies 1 cup dried cranberries or raisins 1/2 cup ground axseed 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1/4 cup canola oil 1/4 cup honey 1 tsp. honey 1/4 tsp. salt In large bowl, combine oats, cereal, fruit, axseed, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a large saucepan, combine brown sugar, corn syrup, oil and honey; cook and stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and salt. Stir in oat mixture; toss to coat.

S’more Bars 8 cups Golden Graham Cereal 5 cups mini marshmallows 1 1/2 cups milk chocolate chips 1/4 cup lite corn syrup 5 Tbsp. butter 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup mini marshmallows Butter a 9- by 13-inch pan. Microwave marshmallows, chips, syrup and butter 2 to 3 minutes. Stirring every minute till smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour over cereal in large bowl.

Toss till evenly coated. Stir in 1 cup marshmallows. Press mixture into pan. Cool before cutting. Tastes like the campre treats without mosquitoes.

Lone ranger cookies by Grace McFall 1 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 2 cups our 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups quick oatmeal 2 cups Rice Krispies 1 cup coconut 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) 1 cup raisins, or dates or butterscotch chips Dash of salt Cream butter, both sugars and eggs.

Mix our, soda, baking powder together. Add to creamed mixture. Stir in vanilla. Add oatmeal, cereal, coconut, nuts and raisins. May need to use a wooden spoon to mix it all together. Drop from teaspoon onto lined cookie sheet. I love parchment paper because the bottom of the cookies never burn. Bake at 350 degrees for 5 to 10 minutes depending on size of cookies. Don’t over bake.

Freeze well.

1 3/4 cups milk 3 cups finely shredded sharp cheddar 1/2 stick butter

In a large bowl, mix the soups, milk and sour cream together. Stir in the hash browns and cheese. Spray a large casserole dish or 9x13 pan with cooking spray. Put the hash brown mixture into dish or pan. Slice the 1/2 stick of butter and place spaced out on top of the mixture. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Once oven is preheated, bake the potatoes for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve anytime of the day, great for breakfast, lunch or supper. Store leftovers in the refrigerator.

Homemade ice cream Put 4 eggs, 2 cups of sugar, 2 pints of cream, 1/4 teaspoon of real vanilla, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a blender. Blend together. Next, dump the mix into the ice cream machine and top off with whole milk. Makes about 1 gallon.

Grasshopper dessert Crust: 1/4 cup (24) crushed Oreos 1/4 cup margarine, melted Filling: 1/4 cup milk 1 – 7oz. marshmallow crème Few drops of peppermint

extract Few drops of green food coloring 2 cups heavy whipping crème

Combine crumbs and margarine (reserve 1/2 cup for topping). Press remaining crumbs on bottom of 9 x 13 pan – chill the crumbs. Gradually add milk to marshmallow cream and mix until well blended. Next add extract and food coloring. Fold in whipping cream and pour into pan. Sprinkle with remaining crumbs. Place in freezer until ready to eat.
