Scott Bouska Waucoma, Iowa; Fayette County 70 cows How did you get into farming? I grew up on a dairy farm and after graduating I left the farm and got a job in town. My parents asked me if I wanted to start farming before they started to make changes to the operation, and after working in town I knew I wanted to farm. I started on shares with my dad in 2005. This year my dad retired and my wife, Kendra, and I became the third generation on my family’s farm.

What do you enjoy most about dairy farming? I enjoy being my own boss and working with the cattle.

What is your favorite thing to do on the farm?

I really enjoy milking our cows the most.

What is your favorite dairy product? Any kind of cheese How do you or your family like to spend time when you are not doing chores? We like to spend time as a family and take the kids out hiking, four-wheeling or to the park.

If you could take a trip anywhere and price was not an issue, where would you go? I would take my wife on a honeymoon to the Caribbean since we never had a honeymoon.

What are you most looking forward to this summer? We are looking forward to having our rst crossbred heifers coming in and seeing how they milk.

How is spring planting in your area? Spring planting in our area has not been great; it depends where you are, though. Some people have no corn in yet and I’ve seen people who’ve started cutting hay. As of June 5 we still had 40 acres of corn to put in.

Hennepin County 40 cows A) How hard it is to plan ahead for outings or get-a ways, because you never know when the weather is going to be right for getting work done.

A) The biggest challenge is keeping things interesting enough so that the kids help because they want to and not because they have to.

A) The biggest challenge of being a dairy farmer and a dad is being on time and making it to my children’s activities during chore time and other busy times of the year on the farm.

B) It’s important to spend time together as a family, especially when your children are young. Also, you need to take opportunities to get away from the farm and give yourself a break.

B) My father was the Wabasha County Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1979 and he taught me the importance of taking care of the land through use of strip cropping and water ways. He also knew the importance of using manure as his main source of fertilizer.

My kids now understand that incorporating the manure is important to help save nitrogen and reduce pollution. I want them to understand that taking care of the land is the most important thing.

B) There are many lessons that I have learned from my dad and I continuously share those lessons with my children in hopes that they will benet from them as well. Those many lessons include being honest, truthful, paying it forward, being the better person, helping those in need, being hardworking, but above all respecting others. His famous saying is “do it right the rst time or don’t do it at all.”

C) Just spending time with my kids, because that’s what being a dad is all about.

C) My perfect Father’s Day gift would be to have an enjoyable day at home with a home-cooked meal and all my family here to relax, spend time together and enjoy the day. As a family we learned early on just how important family is and how short life can be after experiencing the death of my rst wife, the loving, caring Late Sally Fagle. And three years later on Father’s Day in 2010, a pretty special surprise named Reed was born, as he was a boy and a whole month early.

E) We try to vacation on the North Shore every summer. We also do something special for the children’s birthdays each year—Como Park Zoo for Lily and the Children’s Museum in St. Paul for Tate. We also try to get to tractor pulls, threshing shows and county fairs on weekends during the summer. When I can, I nd someone to cover milking so that I can get to dance recitals and school functions.

C) First of all, 80 degrees and sunny followed by a day of no negative surprises in the barn or anywhere else on the farm. Lots of help, no break downs and maybe an afternoon picnic and a relaxing ride on the Kawasaki Mule after chores. This would be the perfect gift because it would be nice to have a day of no deadlines and no hassle of getting somewhere on time.

D) The kids are very involved in the daily work on the farm. They take turns milking with me, mixing feed for the milk cows and taking care of calves and heifers. In fact, we spend most of the day together doing chores and eld work. At night after milking, we like to take Mule rides driving around and looking at the crops and wild animals. This also gives us time to talk about what our plans are for the next day.

E) The kids are involved in a lot of extra curricular activities at school. I try to take time off of the farm to go watch and support them whenever possible.

F) We run a dairy farm and raise our own replacement heifers. Bull calves are also kept and nished out on corn. We also raise all of our own feed and sell some corn. For this year, the biggest plan is going to be nding enough hay because we lost most of the hay due to winter kill. Luckly, the new seeding did survive.

D) Chore time is our family bonding time on a daily basis. We all try to be outside together to work on our family operation. With teamwork and hard work we still having fun and love what we do. We also try to make Sunday our family day and enjoy the day together.

E) We try to go out for supper or lunch, go to the Iowa State Fair, and try to get a night off of milking and chores every once in a while to enjoy a child's special event, such as 4-H or FFA. We enjoy attending sporting events, especially wrestling, football and softball games.

F) We currently operate our family farm consisting of 56 dairy cows and 350 acres of cropland. We enjoy the diversity of raising many different animals

D) Our kids are young and not in school full-time yet, so it is a little easier to see them more during the day.

We usually have breakfast together and I try to help my wife put them to bed at night. I give my daughter at least one four-wheeler ride a day.

F) We milk 40 Holsteins in a tiestall barn. We grow about 300 acres of corn, beans, oats and alfalfa. We also raise our own replacement heifers. We are happy with the size of our herd and don’t have plans to expand, but we are always looking for ways to make our farm more efcient. This year, we hope to install a larger bulk tank.

Our motto is “little farmers thinking big.” Our current plans are to get all the crops in the ground, manure hauled and hope for the best of weather for the year.

We recently started selling our own locally grown, USDA inspected Holstein dairy beef in local stores and we hope to continue growing those sales this year.

Vernon County 80 cows A) To not let the struggles and disappointments of the farm affect your relationships with your little ones, even if it’s your best cow down to stay, months of no rain, or your hay being rained on for a week. Instead, I thank the Lord for the healthy children I have and the blessing they are.

B) A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

C) A beautiful day and a long walk with my family. I enjoy this world we have been blessed with and time with my family.

D) During the day, we spent quite a bit of time in the shop and out working around the farm, where we watch Jacob scraping down the barn and Ruth Anne unloading empty calf bottles. Just watching my children grow in their love of helping each other, their mother and myself.

E) We all love our time with our church family, going camping, biking, going to June Dairy breakfasts around the state, and going for a good pizza.

F) Our farm is close to Wild Cat Mountain State Park. My family and I milk in a double-eight parlor and raise most of our crops and replacement animals.

Our plans for the summer are to build a lot of fence.

B) My dad taught me to do a proper job, treat people the way you would like to be treated and when it comes to farming just do the best that you can and be honest about it. My dad was as honest as the day is long. I’d really like to pass on all that to our kids.

C) I’d just like to spend the whole day with my family. That is what is important in life.

D) One of the nice parts of being on a dairy farm is that you can do chores together. We try to eat at least one meal together every day and we make time for family activities as well.

E) We have gone to some professional baseball games, and we like to attend Hawkeye football and basketball games at least once a year. We also go together to the kids’ sporting and music events.

Sometimes we have to bump chores around so that we can go, but that shows the kids how much you appreciate them.

F) We milk our Holsteins in a tiestall barn that was built in 2003. We farm 160 acres, growing enough hay and corn for our herd. Joann works full time with developmentally disabled persons in a group home setting. Austin graduated in May and plans on attending NICC for two years. Autumn will be a senior in the fall and holds two part time jobs. Joann and I are the fourth generation of our family to operate this farmstead.

Brown County 270 cows A) The biggest challenge about being a dairy farmer and a dad is time management. We have commitments to our herd and business almost 24/7. Our employees need direction, leadership, time off etc.

When Mary and I decided to have a family we felt it was important to be active in our children’s daily activities. In order for us to do this our milking schedule is somewhat challenging. We are up in the middle of the night at 1 a.m. milking cows until around 5 a.m. and we milk a second time at 1 p.m. nishing between 5 and 6 p.m. This routine allows us to normally have dinner together most evenings. We also can make many of our girls activities. Whether it is basketball, science fair, 4-H, FFA, or Brown Swiss Youth activities we make time to support them.

B) The lessons I learned from my dad that I want to pass on to my children are commitment, dedication, responsibility and ownership in whatever I do. Whether you are a student, an employee, an employer, or a spouse and parent, these are traits that are important for you and the people around you.

C) To be pampered and shown appreciation by my wife and kids on Father’s day is gift enough for me. Being together on special occasions is what is important to me.

D) As a family we try to have at least one meal together each day. We all have responsibilities on our dairy where we are working together. As I write this my wife and girls are making the evening meal together. I help my younger girls with home work if it is something I still understand.

I have coached 4-H dairy knowledge bowl for about 12 years. In our household I think this is a topic we encounter year round. At the end of the day we try to say night prayers together before going to bed.

E) I try to go to as many sporting events during the school year as possible. We are very active with our kids in 4-H, whether

Carver County 60 cows A) Finding time to go to the children’s events being that they are usually scheduled in the evening during the middle of milking time. Also, keeping them safe while letting them enjoy the farm life.

B) Farming is not a job; it’s a way of life. Having and making family time is very important.

C) Better weather so that we can nish our spring work.

D) By making time to come up to the house to play with them on the swing set or in the sandbox or letting them ride in the bobcat or tractor with me as I nish up chores.

E) Going to family or friends to barbecue, socialize and let the kids see their friends or cousins for playtime.

F) I farm with my parents, milking 60 cows and running 450 acres. Plans for the year are to nish some ongoing projects, including nishing touches on the milking parlor and holding area, along with some other unnished projects. it is coaching knowledge bowl, showing our cows at different shows, or going to MN State Fair. We like to do at least one vacation with our whole family each year. We are active with the MN Brown Swiss Youth program and do many activities with this organization. We do many activities with our church throughout the year as well.

F) We milk around 270 Registered Brown Swiss. Our cows are housed in compost bed pack barns. We raise all our heifers as well. Our farm has been on this location since my father purchase the site in 1945.

We work with my brother, Mark, and his family. We milk in a swing-12 parlor built in a preexisting tiestall barn. Our herd average is around 26,200 pounds of milk, 1,100 pounds of fat, and 900 pounds of protein. We do not have any big plans for this year.

merican dairy farmers deserve our thanks and appreciation for their dedication to providing the world with nutritious and delicious dairy products, and for their ongoing commitment to comfortable cows, quality udders and quality milk.

Near Scales Mound, Ilinois, Udder Comfort has been part of the Koester family’s (below) quality management for three years. This past year they pursued and achieved their co-op’s 2012 Gold Quality milk award.

“Getting the swelling out fast is the key to good circulation for healthier udders” says Jeff Koester.

“Our SCC averaged 120,000 in 2011 and was higher before that. Udder Comfort became a key to progressively bring down our counts, mainly because we would spray udders after each of the first eight post-fresh milkings-no matter how much swelling we saw. After starting this routine last year, we got our counts down to 90,000 and had fewer flare-ups.

Beckman Dairy (below), Dennison, Minnesota also redoubled efforts to take quality to the next level. “We ran counts of 175 to 180,000. Then we started using Udder Comfort. Our counts today are 125 to 150,000,” says Jeff Beckman. He uses the Mas-D-Tec® meter to monitor fresh cows coming in, and check quarters on cows with SCC over 200,000 on DHI test.

“We routinely use the Udder Comfort spray by spraying every fresh udder after each milking, for the first five to seven days after calving,” Jeff explains. “It certainly pays to see this response: Happier heifers, less mastitis, and declining somatic cell counts, consistently below 150,000.”

“There are a lot of reasons we use Udder Comfort. It’s easy and effective and gets udders in shape-removes swelling, brings out the crease and veining, and helps us maintain a low SCC for our premiums from the bottler,” says Cade Stanek (below) of Our-Favorite Holsteins, Fall Creek, Wisconsin.

“We use it on springers twice a day for three to four days to remove swelling, increase comfort and get them going as quickly as possible. For some, we start a week before calving,” says Stanek. “The quicker I get udder quality to where it should be, the less likely I am to see mastitis or udder problems.”

The Row family also saw a turnaround last summer with their K3C Jerseys, near Osseo, Wisconsin. “Cell counts came in steadily below 200,000 when they used to be over 300,000.
