merican dairy farmers deserve our thanks and appreciation for their dedication to providing the world with nutritious and delicious dairy products, and for their ongoing commitment to comfortable cows, quality udders and quality milk.
Near Scales Mound, Ilinois, Udder Comfort has been part of the Koester family’s (below) quality management for three years. This past year they pursued and achieved their co-op’s 2012 Gold Quality milk award. “Getting the swelling out fast is the key to good circulation for healthier udders” says Jeff Koester. “Our SCC averaged 120,000 in 2011 and was higher before that. Udder Comfort became a key to progressively bring down our counts, mainly because we would spray udders after each of the first eight post-fresh milkings-no matter how much swelling we saw. After starting this routine last year, we got our counts down to 90,000 and had fewer flare-ups. Beckman Dairy (below), Dennison, Minnesota also redoubled efforts to take quality to the next level. “We ran counts of 175 to 180,000. Then we started using Udder Comfort. Our counts today are 125 to 150,000,” says Jeff Beckman. He uses the Mas-D-Tec® meter to monitor fresh cows coming in, and check quarters on cows with SCC over 200,000 on DHI test. “We routinely use the Udder Comfort spray by spraying every fresh udder after each milking, for the first five to seven days after calving,” Jeff explains. “It certainly pays to see this response: Happier heifers, less mastitis, and declining somatic cell counts, consistently below 150,000.”

“There are a lot of reasons we use Udder Comfort. It’s easy and effective and gets udders in shape-removes swelling, brings out the crease and veining, and helps us maintain a low SCC for our premiums from the bottler,” says Cade Stanek (below) of Our-Favorite Holsteins, Fall Creek, Wisconsin. “We use it on springers twice a day for three to four days to remove swelling, increase comfort and get them going as quickly as possible. For some, we start a week before calving,” says Stanek. “The quicker I get udder quality to where it should be, the less likely I am to see mastitis or udder problems.” The Row family also saw a turnaround last summer with their K3C Jerseys, near Osseo, Wisconsin. “Cell counts came in steadily below 200,000 when they used to be over 300,000. We didn’t think that was possible,” say Doug (right) and Melissa Row after Udder Comfort was part of their routine for just five months. “We apply it faithfully after each milking for the first four days after calving” to soften hard quarters and soothe swelling in fresh cows and heifers.
