More than a job Newell retires from Midwest Dairy Association

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Whether in her cereal bowl in the morning, in her glass with her evening meal or the topic of the majority of her conversations during the day as the senior communications manager at Midwest Dairy Association, milk is a priority in Sherry Newell’s life. “I can’t get through a day without milk,� Newell said.

Although milk will continue to be important for Newell in the years to come, she will no longer be working for the dairy farmers who produce it when she retires on June 30 after 25 years with Midwest Dairy Association. “I will miss being able to put my skills and passion into what I do. It’s very easy to get really lost in my work,� Newell said.

During the last 10 years, Newell’s work has consisted of communication training with young people and dairy farmers. She said it has been one of the highlights of her career. “I look at the number of young people I’ve been able to have some association with and the number of dairy farmers who I think are amazing at the way they communicate ‌ playing a small role in that is really rewarding,â€? Newell said.

Some of her favorite memories are when she has encouraged individual farmers to get involved and, in turn, that farmer puts in the time to take his or her skills to become a top-notch communicator. “I can look at them every single day

and know the good they have done, as the result of that communication cannot be measured,� Newell said.

Charles Krause is a dairy farmer who has trained under Newell. He has turned to Newell for support numerous times before conducting an interview about dairy or hosting tours at his farm. “She’s the ďƒžrst person I call,â€? said the dairyman, who milks 200 cows with his family near Buffalo, Minn. “We go through my talking points and the key messages I want to get across ‌â€?

But more than being individual support, Newell has done a lot for the industry, Krause said. “She’s been a great bridge behind the farmers, who just really want to produce milk, and the consumers, who really want to consume it. She’s been one to communicate just how good, nutritious and delicious our product is. I think that’s what she’ll be remembered for – communicating and telling the story of the dairy farmers,� Krause said.

Newell said the people she trains are a very important part to the dairy industry. “I think helping people become more adept at talking about what they do, become better at telling their story, and become excited at the opportunity to tell their story is the most important piece,�

Newell said. “I think the need to do that – to put consumer conďƒždence at the top of our list – is just really, really critical as times have changed.â€?

Newell has seen it while she worked with Midwest Dairy Association. Along with a consumer base that is farther removed from the farm than ever before, there aren’t as many dairy producers to offer the opportunity to communicate with those consumers. “At the same time, I think those farmers who are here have become so much

more cognizant of how important their role is in communicating,” Newell said. “Those farmers are so open and willing and transparent about what they do. I don’t think that could have happened 25 years ago the way it does now.”

In 1991, Newell was hired as the regional producer services

coordinator for the American Dairy Association of Minnesota, which quickly became the American Dairy Association/ Dairy Council of the Upper Midwest. Years later, that became what is now known as Midwest Dairy Association. At the start, Newell met with county boards and helped dairy farmers pro-

mote dairy products at the local level. Over the years, she has progressed through various titles and territories.

Her dairy background lead her to her work in the dairy industry, having grown up on a dairy farm in eastern Iowa that is still operating today by her mom, dad, brother and sister-inlaw. Along with 4-H and FFA, Newell was active in dairy activities at Iowa State University where she studied dairy science and ag journalism. After receiving her degree in 1979, she took a job in St. Cloud, Minn., as a farm broadcaster for 12 years before transitioning to freelance

work and her rst job with Midwest Dairy Association.

Although Newell is retiring from her current job, she will have plenty to do. She plans to spend time with family, enjoy her pastime of quilting and do a bit of traveling. State fair will continue to be an event for Newell, just not in a working capacity. She plans to volunteer, such as helping out at the 4-H dairy show.

Newell will also be able to help with chores at her daughter’s dairy more often.

“I expect to be more helpful there than what I’ve been able to be,” Newell said about her ll-in

milking duties.

With June 30 quickly approaching, Newell said her reaction has been a mix of emotions – balancing the bitter and the sweet of a job she dearly loved. During her time with the Midwest Dairy Association, Newell said her favorite part has been working with and for dairy farmers.

“I cannot imagine having spent my career working for anyone else, and I can’t imagine more dedicated people,” Newell said. “Thank you. The privilege was all mine. It wasn’t a job, it was a life.”

Faith, family, farming Freeport dairyman ordained a priest

ST. ROSA, Minn. – Just three weeks into his career as a priest in the Catholic Church, Fr. Derek Wiechmann is humbled in the path chosen for him.

However, it was his upbringing that admittedly brought him here.

Wiechmann grew up on a dairy farm near Freeport, Minn., with his parents – Mike and Brenda – and ve siblings.

“Farming was an integral part in my faith formation and a precursor to the priesthood, as family and faith were the foundation of my early childhood,” Wiechmann said. “Working on the farm left a lot of room for a relationship with God to grow.

Like a seed in a corn eld, the seed of faith begins small with room to blossom.”

Wiechmann was ordained June 3 by Bishop Donald Kettler at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud, Minn. Beginning June 28, Wiechmann will lead the parishes of Christ the King, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Peter and Paul in Cambridge, Minn., Isanti, Minn., and Braham, Minn., respectively.

“It’s all so new to me that

it’s still sinking in,” Wiechmann said.

After eight years of seminary school, Wiechmann gave his rst Mass in his home parish of St. Rose of Lima June 4.

More than 400 family members and people of the community lled the country church, making room to gather in the choir loft, social hall and newly built addition.

“It was overwhelming … and peaceful,” Wiechmann said. “This had been so long in the planning, and it was just as much about the community as it was about me as a priest.”

Wiechmann still blushes thinking about that moment, giving his rst homily with his parents, siblings and closest relatives in the front three pews.

As the middle child, Wiechmann often found himself looking towards his older siblings for guidance in his faith, but also serving as a role model for his younger brother.

Derek Wiechmann grew up on a dairy farm near St. Rosa, Minn., and was ordained a priest June 3 in St. Cloud, Minn. At the end of the month, Wiechmann will preside over three parishes in Cambridge, Minn., IsanƟ, Minn., and Braham, Minn. were complete, Wiechmann discovered his desire in serving a greater good.

“We were constantly reminded how reliant we were on God and His actions,” Wiechmann said. “We’d pray for rain, and we relied on rain to provide nutrients for the soil, feed for the cows and an income for us.”

In sixth grade, Wiechmann watched a video on Our Lady of Fatima during religion class and felt inspired by the actions of the three children depicted in the lm.

“They had a willingness to endure all,” Wiechmann said.

“In that moment, all I could think about was why we do what we do, why we practice our Catholic faith.”

A short time later, Wiechmann spent his high school years wondering what path he should follow – if he should attend the seminary.

Upon graduating Melrose Senior High School in 2009, Wiechmann attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, Minn., studying philosophy.

“I had looked at two seminaries, one in the Twin Cities and in Winona, but I really liked how I was only a few miles from farm country in

southern Minnesota,” Wiechmann said. “We used to drive out to the elds during study breaks; it was refreshing to pull off on the gravel road and watch the combines go through the elds.”

In 2013, Wiechmann enrolled in the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minn., and nished his studies in theology.

Although following this path seemed natural for Wiechmann, it did not come without doubts.

Five years ago, as Wiechmann was nishing up his studies in Winona, his family endured a heart-wrenching loss – Wiechmann’s youngest brother, Craig, passed away in a farming accident.

“I remember that night so clearly,” Wiechmann said.

“I was driving the skidloader, crying and praying out to God. Even though it was a dark time in our faith, there was never any doubt He was there for us.”

From that moment, Wiechmann found a deeper connection with his family and the faithful career he was pursuing; keeping in mind one of his favorite quotes.

“I’ve been told that, ‘God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called. He chooses those who He knows will provide strength for the community and be completely reliant on Him to do so,’” Wiechmann said.

As Wiechmann prepares to serve his own parishes and be a part of a larger family, he is most looking forward to the homilies where he will relate the readings of each Mass with his upbringing on a dairy farm.

Wiechmann’s parents continue to milk cows with his brother, Adam, and his family alongside.

Although the priesthood is Wiechmann’s main priority, he plans to spend time at the farm when he is able – helping milk the cows, make hay and enjoying days spent with family.

“While it’s too early to say for sure, I’m imagining myself staying very involved,” Wiechmann said. “I told Adam that I didn’t want this to change anything about my role on the dairy.”

After all, Wiechmann’s home farm is where his faith was nurtured, and where he will continue seeking guidance as he begins the journey through priesthood.

The beauty of grazing French family’s journey to organic started with letting cows out to pasture

WEST CONCORD, Minn. – One of Jason French’s favorite things to do is to watch his cattle after morning milking. “I think it’s beautiful seeing the cows out on the grass in the pasture,� he said. “When you start looking at grass and how it works, how it grows and collects solar energy, and how cows eat it and convert it to milk, I just love the whole thing.�

French and his wife, Tammy, own two organic dairy farms, each with 120 cows, near

West Concord, Minn. Four of their ďƒžve children – Luke, 21, Brett, 19, Chaz, 18, and Lexi, 15 – work on the farm while their oldest daughter, Sam, 23, works off farm. The farm also employs French’s dad, Dan; his mom, Muriel; a mechanic; and two herdsmen.

Dairy farming had always been the plan for French. He grew up on his family’s conventional dairy farm and then went off to college at the University of Minnesota-Waseca and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. While he was at school, his dad found a new management style for the cows.

But after thinking about it, French liked the idea more and more. The cows could feed themselves versus people having to make several trips around the barn to feed them, French said.

They started rotationally grazing their herd in 1988 – a year the area experienced a drought. “The hay wasn’t even tall enough to harvest so we started grazing them and we’ve never looked back,� French said.

sense. “The cow is designed to walk and graze and eat grass with her four stomachs,� French said. “She’s out there harvesting her own feed, spreading her own manure and getting exercise in the meantime.�

After French returned from college, he worked with his dad for ďƒžve years before buying his own dairy in 1993.

The 850 acres they have is all seeded for pasture, hay or a combination of both. They don’t raise any grain and the herd has been grain-free since 2007. “We have to raise high energy forage. They get energy from the grasses, but we need legumes to help the grasses grow,�

French said.

Because of this, French strives for a 50:50 grass to legume ratio. creased organic matter.”

French also likes having multiple species on the land.

“In nature you never see just one species,” he said.

French said these two aspects help with soil health.

“It all starts in the soil. If we get our soil healthy, we get healthy crops to raise, we get healthy cows to raise and we get healthy people,” he said.

Grazing starts about April 20 every year and the French family tries to graze their herd 230 days of the year, with the goal to make it to Thanksgiving. Cows are moved to fresh grass every 12 hours and the average length of a rotation for each pasture is 30 to 35 days.

“I see the value of resting and rotating pasture and letting it grow back,” French said. “I never want cows to be on [the same area of] grass more than ve days.”

They supplement the pastures in the spring and fall with a baleage and grass hay combination to transition to and lengthen the grazing season. About 95 percent of their hay is baled into round bales with a small amount of dry hay for the calves.

The French family uses a two-timea-year calving schedule – once in April and September – to work with their grazing schedule.

Learning the ways of rotational grazing took time.

“For the rst 10 years we went to every meeting we could,” French said.

They also read books and articles, became a part of different organizations, and became friends with other farmers who rotationally grazed their herd.

“People laughed and made fun of how we did it [then], but now it’s becoming more mainstream,” French said.

With the rotationally grazing, the French family cut out using herbicides and pesticides. Soon after, they started researching alternatives methods of treat-

ment besides antibiotics. It made sense that the next step in their dairying journey was to become certied organic in 1998.

“We were close to organic anyway, but the thing that pushed me over was for the money,” French said.

But French said going organic means more than money.

“We believe in it,” French said. “You have to believe your alternative health practices will work. Just switching for the money won’t ever work.”

ganic made a difference in their herd, French said.

“When we kept the cows in the barn 23 hours of the day, our whole milk check went to the vet and the feed mill. As soon as we let them outside, we got less milk, but the cattle got healthier,” French said.

French hasn’t had a displaced abomasum on the farm in 20 years, breeding cows back is not an issue and metabolic issues are virtually none, French said.

Although they experience some mastitis and about three cows with milk fever for every 100 cows calving, they feel the numbers are far fewer with their management practices.

“Our focus is on preventing illness rather than treating it,” French said.

And even if there is an illness that arises, French said there are a lot more options for caring for the animal than in the past.

To help with prevention, kelp is given to all animals for vitamins and to boost their im-

mune system. Calves are also on milk for ves months.

“It helps get the calves big and strong before we wean them.

With no grain, that’s important,” French said.

For treating, the French family often uses a tincture of CEG, containing cayenne pepper, Echinacea and garlic. When mastitis hits, they strip out the quarter and use products with mint in it.

“We’re also big believers in essential oils for our family and even use some on the cattle, too,” French said. “We’re very aware of what we eat and what we put into our body.”

Along with continually learning organic practices, the French family has also had the challenge of managing two farms for the past four years.

When French’s parents decided to retire, French bought their farm, which is four miles away.

“We’re keeping two dairies going until we know if any of our kids are coming home for sure,” French said.

French admits it has been a

big learning curve doubling the workload.

“We’ve struggled at getting a manager for over there [at the other farm]. We’ve gured out lately that I need to manage both farms and then have people do their jobs. It’s working well for us now,” French said.

But French freely tells those who ask that it’s been a difcult journey managing two dairies.

“We’re getting by and it’s working, but I still have improvements to make,” he said.

Regardless of the difcultly of managing two farms, the French family still keeps their values and farming philosophies in tact.

“God has allowed me to be a steward of this land and these cows. I want to take as good of care of it as I can,” French said.

It all stems back to their belief in grazing.

“I think God’s design for a cow was to be a grazing animal with her long legs, wide mouth and big barrel to store feed,” French said. “We’re trying to mimic how a cow was made.”

Projected 2017 milk production up 4.3 billion pounds

The Agriculture Department again lowered its 2017 and 2018 milk production forecasts from last month in its latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report “as lower expected growth in milk per cow more than offsets expected gains in cow numbers.”

2017 production and marketings were projected at 216.7 and 215.7 billion pounds respectively, down 200 million pounds from last month. If realized, 2017 production would still be up 4.3 billion pounds or 2.0 percent from 2016.

2018 production and marketings were projected at 221.7 and 220.7 billion pounds respectively, down 300 million pounds from last month. If realized, 2018 production would be up 5 billion pounds or 2.3 percent from 2017.

Fat basis exports for 2017 and 2018 were reduced on the expectation that current high prices will temper demand, but skim-solid basis exports were raised for both years on expected strength in nonfat dry milk/ skim milk powder demand.

The 2017 fat basis import forecast was raised on stronger imports of cheese and butterfat. Lower expected imports of some processed dairy products in 2018 more than offsets higher expected imports of cheese and butterfat, and the forecast for fat basis imports was lowered. The skim-solid basis import forecasts were unchanged.

Cheese, butter, and nonfat dry milk (NDM) price forecasts were raised for both 2017 and 2018 on strong domestic and international demand and a reduced production forecast. Whey prices were reduced for 2017 but raised for 2018.

The 2017 Class III milk price forecast was raised as the cheese price increase more than offsets the lower whey price. Look for a 2017 average of about $16.55 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 20 cents from last month’s projection, and compares to $14.87 in 2016 and $15.80 in 2015. The 2018 forecast is for a range of $16.75-$17.75, up 35 cents from last month’s estimate.

on higher component product prices. The 2017 Class IV was estimated at about $15.50, up 85 cents from last month’s expectation, and compares to $13.77 in 2016 and $14.35 in 2015. The 2018 Class IV average is projected to average $15.25-$16.35, up 85 cents from a month ago.

Projected corn production for 2017/18 was unchanged at 14.1 million bushels, according to the WASDE. USDA will issue its Acreage report June 30, providing a survey-based estimate of corn area planted and a forecast of area harvested for grain. The season average corn price received by producers was unchanged from last month at $3.00 to $3.80 per bushel.

This month’s U.S. soybean supply and use projections for 2017/18 were little changed from last month.

Higher beginning stocks reect a lower crush projection for 2016/17. Soybean crush for 2016/17 was reduced 15 million bushels to 1.9 million mainly reecting reduced domestic soybean meal disappearance.

Soybean ending stocks for 2016/17 are projected at 450 million bushels, up 15 million from last month.

Ending stocks for 2017/18 were also raised 15 million bushels to 495 million. Price forecasts for 2017/18 were unchanged. The 2017/18 season-average price for soybeans was forecast at $8.30 to $10.30 per bushel; soybean meal and oil prices were projected at $295 to $335 per short ton and 30 to 34 cents per pound, respectively.

USDA’s latest Crop Progress report shows 94 percent of the U.S. corn crop was emerged, as of the week of June 11, up from 86 percent the previous week and 1 percent behind a year ago. Fifty seven percent is rated in good condition, down 1 percent from the previous week and 3 percent behind a year ago.

Ninety two percent of the soybeans are in the ground, with 77 percent emerged, up from 58 percent the previous week and even with a year ago. Ninety two percent of the cotton is planted, up from 80 percent the week before and 5 percent ahead of a year ago.

April American cheese demand was up 2.8 percent from March but down 0.9 percent from a year ago, according to USDA’s latest Dairy Outlook. Other cheese demand was down 0.8 percent from March but up 2.8 percent from 2016. Total cheese use was up 0.5 percent from March and up 1.4 percent from a year ago. Nonfat dry milk use gained 0.4 percent in April and butter demand was up 22.8 percent from 2016, according to USDA. Cash cheese prices languished in butter’s shadow Mid-June, especially Wednesday when the shining star of the “Milky Way” shot up 12 cents and hit $2.70 per pound. But, the roller coaster plunged Friday when 24 carloads traded hands, dropping 14 1/2-cents, to close at $2.56, still 8 1/2-cents higher on the week and 19 1/4-cents above a year ago when it jumped almost 17 cents and peaked for the year at $2.3675. A total of 49

cars sold on the week at the CME. FC Stone’s Brendan Curran wrote in his June 14 Insider Opening Bell “The international (butter) market remains on re and driving prices here, which could have lasting effects if some of the shortages we’re hearing of come to fruition.”

HighGround Dairy points out that EU butter prices are quickly approaching the $3.00 per pound level and look poised to test the CME all-time high from September 2015 of $3.14 per pound.

USDA’s latest Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook reported that export prices of foreign competitors have strengthened signicantly in recent weeks, especially for Europe. For the two weeks ending June 9, European export prices for butter and skim milk powder were $2.68-$2.80 and $0.99-$1.07 per pound, respectively. “At the midpoints of the ranges, these prices were 49 cents and 15 cents higher, respectively, than the European export prices reported for the two weeks ending May 12.”

Butter sales are strong according to Central producer’s reports to Dairy Market News (DMN). With only slight exceptions, retail butter demand has outperformed expectations for the past month. Contacts suggest the butter market is healthy and there is little reason to expect a slowdown in the near term. Domestic buyers are reportedly not covered for the second half of the year, therefore sales may continue to climb and cream headed for the churns is tightening somewhat, as the weather continues to heat up.

Western butter demand is also strong. End users, uneasy about possible higher future prices, seem willing to pay more in the short term to assure coverage of butter needs for the second half of the year. Milk fat supplies are getting tighter and ice cream and other Class II manufacturers are pulling large volumes of cream away from the churns. A lot of milk fat is also getting tied up in cheese production, however cream is still available, says DMN. Cash block Cheddar held at $1.63 per pound for ve consecutive sessions, then lost a penny and a half Friday, and closed at $1.6150, down the third week in a row, but still a dime above a year ago. The barrels nished at $1.38, lowest price since March 29, 2017, down 3 1/2-cents on the week, 16 1/2-cents below a year ago, and an unsustainable 23 1/2-cents below the blocks. Two cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME and 46 of barrel.

Milk remains available for cheese production in the Midwest, according to DMN, and reported spot loads ranged from $2.50 to $6.50 under Class III. Some situationally discounted spot loads headed to the vats as well, as thunderstorms caused power outages at some milk production facilities early in the week.

Cheese production continues to match milk intakes, and building inventories remain a concern for some Midwestern cheese producers.

Cheese inventories are currently high, mostly for mozzarella. Demand is strong and steady but the recent decrease in the CME price has some buyers expecting prices to continue to slip. A number of contacts suggest that export opportunities to Asia are increasing due to U.S prices being below international market prices.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed the week at 91 cents per pound, up a quarter-cent and 6 3/4-cents above a year ago, with 14 sales on the week.

California’s July Class I milk prices climbed to $18.45 per cwt. for the north and $18.72 for the south, highest levels since March 2017 and the highest July price since 2014. Both are up $1.46 from June and $3.58 above July 2016.

The 2016 Class I average now stands at $17.77 for the north, up from $15.64 at this time a year ago and compares to $17.86 in 2015. The southern average, at $18.04, compares to $15.37 a year ago and $17.59 in 2015.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted six requests for export assistance this week from members to sell 548,951 pounds of cheese to customers in Asia and Oceania. The product was contracted for delivery through September and puts CWT’s 2017 exports at 38.26 million pounds of American-type cheeses, and 3 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) to 17 countries.

Speaking of exports, the U.S. and China this week signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” that will “increase access to China for more than 200 U.S. dairy exporters in the short-term and pave the way for additional U.S. entrants in the future,” according to a press release from the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC). “The action creates new, sizeable opportunities for dairy farmers and processors, and the milk, cheese, infant formula and ingredients they produce.”

In politics; dairy farmers from across the country visited Capitol Hill this week as part of National Milk’s annual young farmer y-in. A NMPF press release stated that more than 70 farmers from 21 states visited House and Senate members and highlighted four priority issues, including the need to improve the structure of USDA’s dairy Margin Protection Program, “which currently is not providing an adequate economic safety net for farmers.”

The second priority is the Dairy Pride Act, which would “require the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to enforce existing food standards specifying that dairy terms such as milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream should only be used by foods made from real milk.”

Third is “The importance of a balanced approach to trade policy, especially as the 24-year-old NAFTA agreement is renegotiated by the U.S., Canada and Mexico,” and lastly is “the need to reform immigration laws in a manner that helps preserve the existing agricultural workforce and allows for the future ow of dairy farm workers.”

NMPF’s Board of Directors voted unanimously Wednesday to support modernizing the NAFTA agreement “in a way that enhances and protects the United States” current dairy market access opportunities and addresses Canada’s constant use of trade-distorting measures.

NMPF and the USDEC also pledged to work with the Trump Administration to “modernize” the NAFTA, “to make sure it safeguards open trade with Mexico and confronts increasingly protectionist dairy policies by Canada,” according to a joint press release.

In joint comments sent to the U.S. Trade Representative, the two groups described the existing North American dairy landscape as “one in which U.S. dairy products ow relatively unhindered to Mexico but are curtailed by Canada’s increasing use of policy tools violating international trade obligations.”

In comments led with the Ofce of the U.S. Trade Representative, IDFA urged negotiators to “push for greater market access to Canada by addressing the oppressive and expanding policies that limit U.S. dairy exports to that market.”

“Other areas in need of modernizing under the 23-year-old pact, IDFA said, include protections for common food names, enhanced sanitary and phytosanitary measures, enforcement guidelines for rules of origin and the removal of duty drawback restrictions that impede fair competition.”

U.S. milk production totaled 18.9 billion pounds in May, up 1.8% from a year ago.

USDA also revised its estimate of yearover-year milk production in April, putting it up 2.2% compared to its initial estimate of 2% growth. Milk production in the nation’s two largest dairy states fell short of last year. In California, output was down 1.1% from May 2016. In Wisconsin, May milk production was 0.7% lower compared to last year, the Àrst year-over-year decline for America’s Dairyland since April 2014.

Dairy producers in Wisconsin are milking just as many cows as they did a year ago, but production per cow has dropped, likely due to less favorable weather conditions and the processo rmandated elimination of rBST. Production per cow also remains suppressed in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Modest growth—compounding years of very strong increases—continued in the Northeast and much of the Midwest.

Given the size of the herd, growth is likely to continue.

Individual product performances varied, with anhydrous milkfat (AMF) leading the advancers, up 4.4%, and lactose falling 11.1% to post the largest retreat of the product indices. The GDT butter index climbed to a new Àve-year high of $5,768/metric ton (MT) for contract 1 (July) through contract 5 (November).

Contract 3 (September) posted the highest settlement price of $6,050/MT, or $2.68/ lb. However, butter prices for October and November delivery closed lower at $5,590 ($2.47) and $5,455 ($2.41), respectively.

The skim milk powder (SMP) index rose 1.4% to $2,218/MT, which is equivalent to $1.07/lb. adjusted to 35% protein. All contract months settled higher than the last auction except for August (contract 2). Contract 2 settled 0.6% lower at $2,150. European dairy cooperative Arla Foods offered SMP solely in August, which closed at a discount to Fonterra SMP. Arla’s lowand medium-heat SMP settled at $2,040/MT or 99¢ per pound.

Subsequent contract periods closed higher, with contract 5 (November), inÁuenced by higher-valued, heat-stable and UHT SMP, closing at $2,284. Nevertheless, Fonterra mediumheat SMP ranged from a low of $2,120 ($1.03) in October to a high of $2,195 ($1.06) in November. GDT Cheddar cheese prices pulled back by 6.7% to $4,117/MT in July, down 4.5% to $4,088 in September and 1.9% lower in in October to $4,148. The November contract posted a modest gain of 1.6% to $4,145 ($1.88/lb.).

June 21 - Currency Increases Competitiveness

German butter prices moved higher this week, while prices for Edam cheese, skim milk powder (SMP), and whey powder were unchanged. on the high side compared to the prior week. Based on the current euro to dollar exchange rate of 1.12, and converted to 80% butterfat, current German butter prices are equivalent to $2.87/lb. on the low end of the range and $3.07 on the high end. German Edam cheese prices were steady at €3,100 3,350/MT. That is equal to $1.575/lb. on the low end and $1.70 on the high end of the range. The German SMP price range of €1,950 - 2,100/MT was unchanged for the third consecutive week. That equates to a U.S. price equivalent of 99¢ on the low end and nearly $1.07/lb. on the high end of the range. German dry whey prices of €1,080 - 1,120/MT, or 55 - 57¢, were also unchanged for the third successive week. National Dairy Product Sales Report prices for the week ending June 17 were lower except for the escalating butter price, which soared 6.51¢ to $2.4537/lb.

The July Class I mover is $16.59/cwt., up $1.28 from last month due to a higher butterfat price. The per gallon price increase for whole milk is approximately 10 cents, while the price increase for skim milk is negligible.

A family of cheesemakers Alvis carries on long-time dairy business

N E M P N E T T THRUBWELL, SOMERSET, ENGLAND – From both conventional and organic cheeses to cheeses crafted without genetically modied (GM) ingredients, Lye Cross Farm has it all.

Every year, the 700-cow dairy produces nearly 10 million pounds of farmstead cheddar cheese for retailers in the small British community of Nempnett Thrubwell, throughout the United Kingdom and across the globe.

While a majority of the cheese is conventional, about 3 million pounds is organic and another 88,000 pounds is produced GM-free for a retailer in northern California.

“We have stringent welfare and food hygiene codes that ensure our staff, animals and production meet the highest levels of integrity,” said Johnny Alvis, co-owner

Alvis joined the family business in 1992.

As Alvis manages the dairy with his family – wife, Jo, and children, Katy and John – his younger brother, Peter, oversees the cheese plant. The brothers’ father,

John, plays an active role, serving as director of the dairy business.

The herd is divided into two – 500 Holstein Friesians which are milked twice each day and 200 Jersey-Holstein Friesian crosses milked once each day; both groups of ani-

mals are milked in a 60-stall rotary parlor.

“The Jerseys are expected to walk up to three miles a day,” Alvis said.

Regardless of the breed, Alvis selects for good feet and legs, strong component traits, type, longevity and re-

duced somatic cell count.

On the farm, heats are naturally detected by sight, tail paint and motion detecting collars.

“We only breed dairy bulls to cows at their rst or second service,” Alvis said.

“Any subsequent mating is to a beef animal – Angus, Hereford or British Blue.”

During the summer months, the herd is grazed. As winter arrives, the Holstein Friesians are moved indoors and fed a total mixed ration, while the Jersey-Friesians are dried off.

“They spend their winter on the Mendip Hills, eating swede, kale, radishes and stubble turnips,” Alivs said.

With the Holstein Friesian herd maintaining a rolling herd average (RHA) of 18,000-some pounds with 4.2 percent fat and 3.3 percent protein, and the JerseyHolstein Friesians holding a 8,000-pound RHA at 5.8 percent fat and 4.2 percent protein, the Alvis family has the milk needed for their renown cheese.

Raising a Farmer A lot of work but always room for laughter

I explained to him what happened to one of his beloved cows, 400–one he has taken to the fair since she was a calf and a sister to his most special cow, 304. One he has loved on. I barely could get the words out as I said, “She never came around.” Words I knew I would eventually have to tell my child but never wanted to think about it.

All of the milk produced is used for cheese production, in addition to the milk of 30 other nearby farms.

Currently, the standard milk price for dairy farmers in England is $12 per hundredweight (cwt.) or 28p per liter. Alvis also receives an additional $4 per cwt., for not using GM feed in the ration.

“Our contract also pays well on cleanliness and high fat and protein,” Alvis said. “Hence, the Jersey crosses.”

As the dairy business developed, the Alvis family adapted their farming enterprise to accommodate 120 employees with fair wages and housing.

“My grandfather started dairy farming and cheesemaking on a tenanted farm for the War Ag Department between the rst and second world wars,” Alvis said.

Since then, the Alvis family acquired 4,200 acres of land to grow crops, such as corn varieties, wheat, barley and grasses, and became shareholders in an agricultural contracting business. In addition to the milking

herd, Alvis oversees 300 beef cattle and 6,000 pigs. One herdsman also manages an organic herd of 300 milking cows which is a part of Lye Cross Farm.

“We are one of two dairy herds left in our [community]. Dairy farms have changed in recent years to either larger herds or to robotic dairies.

There are not many small herds left,” said Alvis, noting the country’s average herd size of 143 cows.

For more than 20 years, Alvis and his fellow dairy farmers have farmed with the threat of bovine tuberculosis.

“We’ve lived with a low level of this disease, because very little is being done to tackle TB in wildlife,” Alvis said.

Despite the dwindling population of dairy farms near Nempnett Thrubwell and the continued danger to the industry, the climate is ideal for dairy farming, with temperatures rarely falling below zero and reaching temperatures greater than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The dairy infrastructure is strong, too – allowing Alvis the opportunity for dairy services within a 20-mile radius of the farm on a daily basis, if needed.

Every day begins at 4 a.m., for Alvis and his family. The parlor runs from the early morning hours until 7:30 a.m. After the rst milking shift is complete, the milking herd, youngstock and beef animals are fed, while breeding and veterinary work also takes place.

“By 9 a.m., we all sit down together for breakfast and plan for the day ahead,” Alvis said. “If possible, we aim to be home by 5:30 p.m., and we all work 12 days on, two days off.”

For Lye Cross Farm, Alvis and his family are planning to increase the size of their Jersey-Friesian herd and also become more efcient with the milking equipment.

“Whilst doing all of this, we must be mindful of continuing to make a margin,” Alvis said. “Our ultimate goal would be to put a family member or manager in place to take the business forward for another generation.”

While improving his own dairy, Alvis hopes to better the public’s perception of the industry by keeping them engaged with milk production and the various methods of doing so.

“Dairy farming has been very good to me. It has taken me all around the world, talking to princes, politicians and paupers about farming,” Alvis said. “But, best of all is the family and staff I have back at home.

Strong winds, possible tornado caused damage to Gareld dairy farm

GARFIELD, Minn. – He doesn’t know if it was straight line winds or a tornado, but Billy Euerle knows whichever it was, it did a lot of damage to his farm.

“Thank God no animals or people were hurt,” he said.

At about 9:30 p.m. on June 12, a storm came through Euerle’s 75-cow dairy near Gareld, Minn. It damaged every building on the property except the house.

“I had literally just look at my phone and saw that the tornado warning was off. Then the wind picked up, I heard a loud bang and saw the transformer blow,” said Euerle, who farms with his wife, Michelle.

After the storm had passed, 30 feet of his silo collapsed, the roof of a rented silo across the road was gone, parts of the roof from the barn and another building had been ripped apart, and a grain bin blew across the road. Debris littered Euerle’s farmyard, trees fell on and damaged every vehicle, and he still cannot locate all of his calf hutches.

Getting the milker pump on proved to be a challenge because the box for the generator was also damaged.

“I was freaking out about how to get the cows milked,” Euerle said.

After many hours, the power was restored in order to get his herd milked in the tiestall barn.

Euerle was very thankful for his dairy farming friends who came to help clean up, even a few from several hours away.

“People just showed up with chainsaws and other equipment to help,” he said. “I can’t thank them enough.”

Going forward, Euerle will continue the cleanup process and gure out what do to for forage.

“Thankfully one of the silos wasn’t full, but I’m in a bad situaBilly Euerle tion of where to put Dairy farmer feed for this fall,” Euerle said about both of the silos he uses being in nonworking order.

He has also had to dry up a few cows that were getting close to that time anyway.

Although the situation isn’t ideal, Euerle is going to move forward to get through it the best he can.

“All I’ve ever wanted to do is dairy farm so I’m not going to quit,” he said.

“We have had the generator for about 1 year and so far it has been trouble free! It is important that it is reliable and so far it has been just that!”

A day in the life of the Huppert, Kjos families

Huppert Brothers Farm hosts Pierce County dairy breakfast

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – As the city of River Falls, Wis., continues to grow, so do the number of houses on its outskirts, sheltering families who commute back and forth from their jobs in the nearby Twin Cities.

However, a reminder of the area’s agricultural roots is nestled between one of those very subdivisions and the hills that make up much of western Wisconsin. Huppert Brothers Farm, which has been in the area since 1900, hoped to tap into their location for one very special opportunity – hosting the 2017 Pierce County dairy breakfast June 17.

The farm, owned and operated by Lawrence and Kay Huppert, and their daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jason Kjos, milks 140 registered Holsteins three times a day in a double-6 herringbone parlor with an average milk yield of 86 pounds per day.

“It’s tricky because we’re actually in St. Croix County, but everyone has taken a turn [in Pierce County] and there are fewer and fewer farms to work with,” Amanda said. “We wanted to make sure that others have the opportunity to visit farms.”

When Huppert Brothers was selected by the Pierce County dairy promotions committee in early spring, the farm’s history and location gured in

its selection.

“We’re close to the Cities and a housing development,” Amanda said.

“This is a heritage farm that has been here a very long time.”

The farm was started 117 years ago, with Lawrence’s parents, Edmund and Rose Huppert, who arrived in 1928 with a small herd of dairy cattle and hogs. They had four children; three sons and one daughter.

Lawrence and his brother, Donald, took over the farm in 1969 when Edmund and Rose retired. Thus, Huppert Brothers was born.

We do take cattle all day on Monday from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m., all pens with hay and water.

While the farm and its signature green-and-white buildings are well kept, the Huppert and Kjos families upped the ante while preparing their farm for the dairy breakfast.

“We’ve done a lot of yard work, detail cleaning and some painting,” Ambrea said.

With a stroke of good timing, a new shed was being built on the farm – even before Huppert Brothers was selected – that would hold all the tables, chairs and cooking equipment for the breakfast.

Lots of help arrived throughout the preparation process, particularly from the Pierce County Dairy Promotion Committee.

In recent years, the Pierce County dairy breakfast has averaged around 1,400 attendees.

Huppert Brothers Farm wanted to increase that number and took it upon themselves to invite their neighbors and the city of River Falls.

Amanda visited many local businesses, while Jason and Lori spoke with the housing administrator from the subdivision across the road. An e-mail blast was sent to every resident inviting them to the breakfast.

“Lori also went to every other house and knocked on the door to invite them to the breakfast,” Jason said.

Last-minute preparations took place the day before the breakfast amid the farm’s daily routine. Even while cows were being milked during noon chores, people were oating about the farm doing various tasks such as putting together pens for the petting zoo and

hauling shavings for animals.

When asked about his outlook for the breakfast, Jason was realistic.

“Mother Nature holds the cards,” Jason said. “It’s all up to her.”

Family members were scattered, along with many volunteers, making sure that their guests were satised.

The freestall barn and antique tractor display were popular, as well as the social media-ready photo booths with props, costumes and hashtags galore.

In total, 2,075 people had the Pierce County dairy breakfast at Huppert Brothers Farm penciled in to their Father’s Day weekend.

This breakfast – where housing developments and hay bales meet – proved to be a runaway success.

National red and white convention held in Minnesota

KASSON, Minn. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; For the third time in the last four years, the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association held its annual convention in the Midwest. After meeting in Wisconsin in 2014, Iowa in 2015 and Maryland in 2016, the organization chose Kasson, Minn., for its 2017 event.

The convention opened the evening of June 7 and ended with a sale the evening of June 9. Meetings and meals were held at Events by Saker, with the sale at the Dodge County Fairgrounds, both in Kasson.

The intervening time was ď&#x192;&#x17E;lled with meetings, youth activities, a silent auction, a banquet and two days of farm tours.

A key event at the convention was the annual awards banquet Thursday evening. It began with a presentation on the history of red and whites

by Ron Eustice, author of They Saw Red! Numerous awards were then presented to youth and adult members.

A highlight of the evening was the naming of the 2017 National Red and White Queen, Katie Thompson of Plainview, Minn., by last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s queen, McKenna Coffeen.

Thursday’s schedule included a bus tour to Sheeknoll Farms near Rochester, Minn., home of Sheeknoll Durham Arrow EX-96 – better known as Thomas – the grand champion Holstein and reserve supreme champion cow at the 2016 World Dairy Expo. Tour participants were able to see both the freestall and tiestall barns at Sheeknoll. The next tour stop was Little Valley Dairy, owned by the Thompson family.

Thursday was also youth day with special events at Little Valley. Activities included a judging contest, a tting dem-

onstration provided by Minnesota Junior Holstein members and a showmanship demonstration provided by Steve Searles.

All youth participants were entered to win a calf, along with other prizes. The red and white heifer, TJ-Pollema DP SpecialRed, was donated by John Bierbaum, Bob Eustice, Ryan and Karen Grifn, Arnie and Kris Gruenes, Spencer and Stacy Hackett, Keith and Kay Mahoney, Todd and Jean Pollema, Tracy Schaefer, Karla Smieja, Andy and Sue Steinhagen, and Matt and Polly Timmer. New RWDCA junior member Monica Evers of Kellogg, Minn., was the winner of the calf. Additional prizes included clippers and show halters among other items.

PLAINVIEW, Minn. – Although dairy has always been a big part of Katie Thompson’s life, it’s the Red and White Holstein breed that has propelled her interest to a higher level.

This includes her recently appointed role as the National Red and White Queen, after being crowned June 8 at the national convention in Kasson, Minn.

“It’s an honor. I get to represent the entire breed across the country,” Thompson said. “I feel like I’m giving back to the breed that got me going in showing. I’ve shown since I was a little girl with the novice calves, but red and whites got me into the elite genetics and to show at national shows.”

Thompson is the 18-year-old daughter of Donny and Holly Thompson, who milk 190 cows near Plainview, Minn.

During her reign and donning her red sash and tiara with red jewels, Thompson is required to attend three shows to hand out ribbons – the All American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pa.; the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky.; and World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. Beyond these mandatory events, Thompson may travel to other red and white shows to act as queen, handing

out ribbons and promoting the breed.

“I wanted to get more involved besides just being on the halter and in the show ring,” Thompson said about why she decided to compete for the crown.

“I wanted to be on the other side of things and be able to hand out awards.

I want to witness the job and appreciate the moments I get when I’m showing.”

The competition was held during the national convention and consisted of a 25-mintue personal interview, a presentation about the red and white breed and an impromptu question and answer session in front of the convention attendees.

Thompson has been a member of the red and white junior association for at least the past six years.

“We always had an interest in red and whites, but we had to gure out how to incorporate them into our herd,” Thompson said.

Thompson’s love for red and whites started six years ago when she and her siblings purchased their rst red animal, Strans-Jen-D Taffeta-Red, an Advent daughter out of Jen-D Devil Tiffany-Red. Taffeta turned into a successful show animal for Thompson, who showed her at the 2013 World Dairy Expo, placing seventh in the senior 2-year-old class.

“I’ve built my herd because of my rst success with red and white,” Thompson said, referring to Taffeta.

After purchasing Taffeta, the Thompsons began to breed heavily for the red color. Thompson and her two siblings own 25 red and white animals along with having 20 red and white carriers in their herd.

ConƟnued from THOMPSON | Page 26 “We want to make the best mating for each cow, but over the past ve years we’ve been trying to incorporate more red genetics into our herd,” Thompson said.

When selecting bulls for mating, the Thompsons focus on type for their red and white Holsteins.

“Being in a freestall barn, they have to milk, too, so most of our red and whites are good, functional animals,” Thompson said. “Especially with our red and whites, we’re very picky about our mating.”

Although the whole family likes the added color to their herd, Thompson and her mom are the two who love the breed the most.

“For our red and white animals, I have a big say in mating. I really enjoy working with deep pedigrees of the cows,” Thompson said. “I go to the shows and know what the popular bulls are, but when it comes down to it, we breed an animal based on what bull ts that cow the best.”

While Thompson said she doesn’t feel they are any different type-wise than their black and white counterparts, she does think they differ in personality.

“They’re very sassy,” Thompson

said. “Their attitude is different.”

Each year, Thompson participates in local, regional and national shows through 4-H, FFA and the junior Holstein associations. This year, Thompson’s show string will consist of two heifers and one cow that are red and white Holsteins, and three black and white Holsteins, one of which is a red and white carrier.

Along with her showing season, Thompson is looking forward to traveling to other events as queen.

“I’m excited to get out of the state and go see other shows, meet exhibitors and interact with other members,” Thompson said. “I’m going to focus on college this fall, but I want to get out and do as many shows as I can to promote red and whites.”

This fall, Thompson will be a freshman at the University of MinnesotaTwin Cities, where she will be majoring in agricultural communications and marketing.

Although she doesn’t know where she wants to be in the future, she knows she wants it to include dairy, a passion that propelled forward because of her love for red and whites.

Dairy cows need high-quality water Testing several times a year recommended

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Dairy farmers can be sticklers about producing high-quality feed. But what about the water their hard-working, bovine ladies drink?

Is it also of good quality? And, is it so good that cows will drink enough of it each day?

Paul Kononoff, an animal scientist at the University of Nebraska-Lin- Paul Kononoff coln, talked about University of Nebraska “Water for Dairy Production” during the Four-State Dairy Nutrition Conference, June 14 and 15 in Dubuque, Iowa. He said a rule of thumb is that a dairy cow needs to drink twice as much water as the amount of milk she produces.

That means that a cow giving 100 pounds of milk a day needs to drink approximately 23 gallons of water or more per day. Besides having access to plenty of water, the beverage needs to

be good, too.

“High-quality water is often easy to spot,” Kononoff said. “It’s generally clear and colorless. But it’s easy to overlook the fact that water contains more than just oxygen and hydrogen.

Water may also contain pollutants, dangerous microorganisms, and many types of minerals, all of which affect water quality and possibly production and the health of a lactating dairy cow.”

Besides natural inuences, other things as septic tanks, milkhouse waste and industrial drainage can affect a farm’s water supply. That makes frequent water testing a valuable tool.

Kononoff said a dairy farm’s water should be tested several times a year.

Be on the lookout for the presence of coliform bacteria and pay attention to the total bacterial load. Look at the water’s pH and its nitrate, nitrite, and mineral content.

Total dissolved solids One trait to examine is water’s total dissolved solids (TDS), sometimes called salinity, said Kononoff. This TDS is an estimate of the amount of inorganic constituents dissolved in a sample of fresh water.

A study from 1995 found that cows drank almost three more gallons of water a day after it was desalinated.

day, Kononoff said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Based on recommendations by the National Research Council (NRC), itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generally believed that water containing 5,000 to 7,000 parts per million (ppm) of TDS is reasonably safe for heifers and dry cows,â&#x20AC;? Kononoff said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But, producers should avoid offering this water to pregnant or lactating cattle, since production might be impaired.â&#x20AC;?

He said the NRC advises that dairy cattle in any stage of production should not drink water containing more than 7,000 ppm of TDS. Sulfates are another group of compounds sometimes found in groundwater, Kononoff said. The upper safe limit for sulfate (SO4) is believed to be about 50 ppm, but some water samples contain as much as 300 ppm, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A recent study of water samples from the Great Plains found that 37 percent of the samples exceeded this upper concentration,â&#x20AC;? Kononoff said.

Drinking water can contain different kinds of sulfates. The list includes calcium sulfate, plus iron, magnesium, manganese and sodium sulfate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although all of these forms have laxative effects, sodium sulfate is believed to be the most potent,â&#x20AC;? Kononoff said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iron sulfate has been shown to negatively affect free water intake.â&#x20AC;?

Kononoff said the biggest concern about sulfates in water is that they are reduced to sulď&#x192;&#x17E;de in a dairy animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rumen. That sulď&#x192;&#x17E;de, when combined with the sulfur in feed and water, can tie up trace minerals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially copper and selenium â&#x20AC;&#x201C; making them unavailable to the animal.

Iron in water can also be a problem, Kononoff said. Drinking water that has a high concentration of iron â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 250 to 1,200 ppm â&#x20AC;&#x201C; can reduce the absorption of copper in mature cattle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;An additional concern with cows consuming high concentrations of iron is the increased potential to contribute to oxidative stress,â&#x20AC;? Kononoff said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This may be of particular concern in animals with compromised immune systems,â&#x20AC;? such as cows just before or after calving.

Nitrates and nitrites are sometimes in drinking water, and animals require neither, Kononoff said.

High concentrations in water or feed can cause nitrate poisoning.

Dairy farmers should keep in mind the fact that microbes in the rumens of cattle change nitrates to nitrites, Kononoff said. When that change happens and nitrites are absorbed into a ruminantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bloodstream, they reduce the bloodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to carry oxygen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a survey of 128 Iowa dairy farms, an elevation in the nitrate concentration of drinking water was correlated with increased calving intervals,â&#x20AC;?

Kononoff said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Dairy NRC recommends that nitrate-nitrogen not exceed 44 milligrams per liter.â&#x20AC;?

Sometimes ruminants can adapt to eating and drinking high amounts of nitrates. That might happen if rumen microbes metabolize all of the nitrates instead of converting them to nitrites, Kononoff said.

A dairy cow can get about 71 percent of her daily water intake by drinking. She can get the other 29 percent, on the order of nine gallons, from her feed, Kononoff said.

When it comes to water losses, most of it leaves through manure. That accounts for about 44 percent of the loss. Urine accounts for 16 percent, or about 4.7 gallons a day.

Approximately 18 percent, or 5.1 gallons, of a dairy cowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s water loss is through evaporation. Her milk can account for 25 percent of the daily water loss, or 7.1 gallons of water.

The farmers in the area are starting to do second crop alfalfa. We are going to start cutting after the rain goes through this week. The stand is 24 RAINFALL inches tall and grew like TOTALS Last 2 gangbusters. There is Weeks plenty of hay in Winona County. There was a lot of corn and soybeans in the Lake City, Plainview, Minn., area, and also in 3.25” Winona County that had to be replanted. We had such extreme amounts of rain it didn’t come up. Since April 1 Farmers are still trying 18.95” to get peas drilled in for Lakeside Foods. They are seven to eight days past their deadline.

I haven’t seen anybody doing second crop hay yet. We plan to start cutting second crop hay on Monday (June RAINFALL 26); it’s getting there. TOTALS Last 2 I’ve seen a couple Weeks guys have to spray their alfalfa for weevils.

The crops are looking good. We just started cutting our 30 acres of triticale and peas. RAINFALL We have to cut our TOTALS oats and peas next.

There might be more out there this crop than the first one. One dairy near us is chopping now. We sprayed it last Wednesday for aphids and leafhoppers. The corn is 1-2 feet tall and the soybeans vary in height; it depends on when we planted them.

It’s been on the cool side here, and we’re still getting rain. The corn is standing about 15-18 inches tall.

Even the corn that was put in late or replanted RAINFALL because of the wet fields is TOTALS coming up really fast. It’s Last 2 almost hard to tell which Weeks fields were planted when.

The heat has been really good all week and it gave us an opportunity to get things where they belong.

2” We just finished applying nitrogen and [Glyphosate], but we might go through the fields again with more Since April 1 nitrogen. The rain has been 17.5” beneficial and the second crop is looking good. We’re hoping to cut it by the Fourth of July, although we’re about a week behind where we usually are.

I finished first crop two weeks ago. It’s been dry, but we got one inch on June 16 so that has helped us. That’s the only rain we’ve gotten in awhile. The rain has been going around us. We could RAINFALL use more, but the moisture TOTALS made a huge difference on Last 2 the hay and corn. All the Weeks crops look good right now.

I haven’t sampled our first crop yet, so I don’t know the quality. We will start second crop in about two weeks.

1” We have finished spraying the second pass on the corn and we’re planning to spray soybeans soon. The Since April 1 soybeans are looking good 9” and even the later beans are catching up to the ones planted earlier. Right now the soybeans are about 3-6 inches tall. The wheat is starting to turn color. The corn is looking good. It’s above the knee or better, so about 3 feet tall.

It’s been wet here. In the last 10 days, it’s rained eight.

But, everything is planted and we made first crop hay.

We have about 15 acres of old grass hay left to make haylage for the heifers, but RAINFALL we’ll get to that in the coming TOTALS days. The corn looks really Last 2 rough – poor emergence and Weeks yellow. As soon as it dries out, I’m sure everyone will be spraying. Second crop is about 10 days off, but the 3.75” fields look horrible. They’re water stressed and stunted.

We interseeded with fescue, so hopefully that will take off by the third crop. Basically, Since April 1 12.25” we’re sitting, waiting for it to dry up to start second crop.

Hopefully the weather will straighten out and we can plan a vacation before the end of summer.

We’ve had quite a bit of rain in the last two weeks. It has not been heavy, but just light rains that have added up to 2.7 inches. There was a twoday window where we were able to get our second crop RAINFALL done. We cut on June 15 and chopped the next day. It rained TOTALS that night so we just beat it.

Last 2 The alfalfa was all over the Weeks board for height, ranging from 22 to 31 inches, but most of it averaged about 24 inches tall. It had budded, but it still tested at 190 RFV. The corn looks a little iffy. The stuff that was planted later looks better than what was planted earlier. The earlier planted corn has canopied while the later corn is about Since April 1 6-8 inches tall. After we got the 14.4” rain the last two weeks it really took off. The soybeans look the best out of all the crops. The fields are starting to turn green. Coming up, we will be spraying new seeding and doing the second pass spraying on beans.

We’re still finishing up first crop. There have been a lot of scattered thunderstorms so it’s been hit and miss getting into the fields. We have about 15 acres of first crop left to cut.

We’re probably about a week behind. We’ll get our hay off RAINFALL by the end of the week (June TOTALS 24) if we get a couple days to Last 2 dry out. In the first crop that Weeks we have done, there is a lot of tonnage out there. Quality might be a little low, but tonnage-wise it’s filling the bag. Our corn is probably 6-7 inches tall. The good thing is that a lot of the seeds that didn’t sprout when it was dry are coming up and have finally emerged. Some other farms have yellow looking corn. Beans and oats are in the Since April 1 same situation as our corn. The 15.25” soybeans are about 3-4 inches tall. Overall, the crops in the area are looking good. Looking ahead we’ll have to get spraying, and we have to pick some rocks in our bean and grain fields.

Corn is up about a foot, and the late-planted crop is about 6 inches tall. In the last two weeks, we chopped 180 acres of hay and baled 37 acres. We finished planting, RAINFALL too, and sprayed all but 51 acres. We’re getting ready TOTALS for second crop hay, which Last 2 we’ll hopefully start Thursday Weeks (June 22). We chop with our neighbor and will start on their fields first, then by Friday or Saturday we’ll start cutting ours. The first crop yield was phenomenal. We try and cut every 26 days, but the second crop will be about one-third less of first crop. We could Since April 1 get more, but we don’t need 10.3” to push the window. It’s nice chopping with our neighbors and getting it all done at the same time, that way it doesn’t seem like we’re doing it forever.

Weeks We haven’t had any problems with bugs yet. The corn is about 18 inches tall and by 2.25” the end of the week the rows should be shut.

The soybeans came up Since April 1 a lot better than they 9.75” originally looked. We’ve been moving cattle around.

The National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce the winners of their dairy scholarships for 2017. National Dairy Shrine will provide more than $45,000 of scholarships to students at their annual scholarship & awards banquet on Oct. 5 in Madison, Wis. Receiving a H.H. Kildee Graduate Studies $3,000 Scholarship is Elizabeth Endres of Waunakee, Wisconsin. Elizabeth attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will be entering the UW School of Veterinary Medicine to become a veterinarian.

The NDS Senior Student Recognition program recognizes graduating seniors planning a career related to the dairy industry who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, academic ability, and a sincere interest in dairy cattle. Each university is allowed to nominate up to two candidates for this recognition in any given year. The highest winner receives a $2000 award, the second a $1500 award and the other winners receive $1000 awards.

The second award goes to Crystal Siemers Peterman of Cleveland, Wis. She is graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Agricultural & Food Business Management. The next recipient is Elizabeth Endres from Waunakee, Wis., who has pursued a Dairy Science major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Next is Ethan Dado of Amery, Wisconsin, who is a double major in Animal Science & Agricultural Education at the University of Minnesota. Following is Mariah Schmitt of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, who majored in Dairy Science and Agriculture & Society at Iowa State University. Matthew Harnish of Willow Street, Penn., is a recipient this year. He is attending Northeast Iowa Community College and majoring in Dairy Technology.

Receiving the $1,500 McCullough scholarship is Katherine Gathje. She plans to use this scholarship as she continues her education at the University of Minnesota, where she will major in Agricultural Communications and Marketing with a minor in Spanish. Gathje grew up on a dairy in Richmond, Minn.

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/3 cup white sugar 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/3 cup butter, melted 3 (8 ounce) packages cream

cheese 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 3 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 tsp. all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar, butter and cocoa. Press onto bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch spring form pan. Set crust aside. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add sweetened condensed milk; beat well. Add vanilla and eggs, and beat on medium speed until smooth. Toss 1/3 of the miniature chocolate chips with the 1 teaspoon flour to coat (this keeps them from sinking to the bottom of the cake). Mix into cheese mixture. Pour into prepared crust. Sprinkle top with remaining chocolate chips. Bake at 300 degrees F for 1 hour. Turn off oven (do not open oven door) and leave the cake in the oven to cool in the oven for another hour. Remove from oven and cool completely. Refrigerate before removing sides of pan. Keep cake refrigerated until time to serve.
