NEW RICHLAND, Minn. – Sherry Panuska said the dairy goat industry has come a long way since she rst started milking. “There was not much to it,” Panuska said about the dairy goat industry when she got into it in the late 1970s. “We were still trying to ght the goats-eattin-cans image at that point.” But all that has shifted. “Now, goats are cool so it’s been a big turnaround,” Panuska said. Panuska has also come a
long way during her nearly 45year career with dairy goats, focusing on genetics and achieving high production as the highest producing dairy goat herd in Minnesota, according to Dairy Herd Improvement Association. She and her husband, Rob, along with help from her 83-year-old mother, Ann Schultz, and their daughter, Brittania Cromwell, milk 155 goats near New Richland, Minn. The venture started for Panuska as a homestead project and a way for her family to have their own milk supply. “We really liked the goats’ personalities, ” she said about why they went with goats over
cows. Although Panuska did not have any dairy experience, she had horses and chickens while growing up. “I had to learn what a healthy animal looked like with this different livestock,” she said. “Some things are the same across the board, but we had to gure out some things specic to goats and why they were acting the way they were acting.” Over time, they learned more about the species. When the Panuskas were producing more milk than they could use for their family, they decided to nd a market. In 1991, they started selling milk to an onfarm creamery. Now, they sell to Saputo International. Not long after acquiring

The Panuskas started their herd in the 1970s and now milk goats year-round on their farm near New Richland, Minn. the new livestock, the Panuskas started showing their goats. “I grew up showing horses,” Panuska said. “When I started with goats. I didn’t think I would show. … But I found showing goats is a totally different atmosphere. People are really helpful. … They want you to do well. Not that it means there isn’t competition, but they’re a lot friendlier folk.” Showing pulled Panuska into the genetics side of dairy goats. “Because we started out showing, we have always put a lot of emphasis on sound type. We always selective mate, trying to make every generation better than the one in front of it. Whether we’re keeping those kids or they’re going to be sold, I’ve always tried to make that next crop of kids better,” Panuska said about their largely Saanen herd. Panuska also wanted the goats to be able to produce since that is the purpose of the expanded herd. The breeding philosophy now nely balances getting the right amount of production with type. “I’ve always believed if you only focus on production you’re going to lose production because you won’t have the sound functional type to support it,” she said. Panuska has also always emphasized breeding for long lactations. “That’s something not a lot of people have done,” Panuska said. “At rst it was hard to nd does with long lactation. … If does are not willing to milk a long lactation, they tend to not stay in the herd.” By using this philosophy, the Panuskas have been able to achieve two goals they set early on in their careers – have a doe make 5,000 pounds in a year and have them appraised by the American Dairy Goat Association in the 90s. Last year, two Saanen does made the production level they strived for and one of them appraised at 91. This year, the other doe appraised at 92. “At rst I was amazed not just to
have one doe reach 5,000 pounds, but to have two in the same year,” Panuska said. “Then I thought let’s keep going and increase the percentage of does that can do that. Let’s try to repeat the performance.” They have also had success with the LaMancha and Sable breeds in their herd, with one doe from each breed being appraised 92 in recent years. LaManchas and Sables each make up about 10 percent of the herd, with Saanens being the rest. “I don’t think I’ll ever see 5,000 pounds out of a LaMancha,” Panuska said. “They’re supposed to have better components, but it varies tremendously.” The Panuskas started with the breed for their daughter. Cromwell did not want to compete in the showring against the family’s other Saanens. “People ask me why we have LaManchas if they don’t milk as much as the Saanens, and they’re naughty,” Panuska said. “I tell them so we appreciate the Saanens. In truth, there’s something about the personalities of LaManchas that children just love.” Now, Cromwell’s 6-year-old daughter, Rylie, is following in her mother’s footsteps and starting a small herd of her own LaManchas. While most does are bred with a buck, Panuska does A.I. a few does each year. “I started A.I.ing in the ‘80s and always have been,” she said. “I think the biggest problem is nding productionbred bucks to buy semen from because most of the people who are going to go to the expense and time of using A.I. have more emphasis on national showing than production. We tend to use A.I. to bring in new bloodlines.” The Panuskas also milk year-round and try to freshen at least 10 goats in the fall. “It helps to keep the cell count down and keep enough milk to make it worth the truck coming,” Panuska said. It has all been part of their journey after not knowing about goats when they rst purchased them. “We really like the personality of the goats and working with them,” Panuska said. “We have a lot of friends who have goats and are like-minded. Build a forage chain to extend grazing season
Use annuals, perennials, grasses and legumes By Ron Johnson

Graziers can keep their dairy cattle and other livestock on pasture longer. The key is to build a season-long forage chain. Kent Solberg, a livestock and grazing specialist with the Minnesota Sustainable Farming Association, talked about grazing during a webinar May 30. The seminar was sponsored by Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), a national, nonprofit organization Kent Solberg Minnesota Sustainable that advocates for Farming Association the safe and humane production of meat, milk and eggs. Solberg and his wife have raised dairy and beef cattle, hogs and chickens on their farm in Wadena County. Rotational, or managed grazing, Solberg said, is the most economical and humane means of harvesting feed for livestock. He said the cost of mechanically harvesting feed and storing it can amount to 50-70 percent of the cost of keeping a cow. Grazing and using a forage chain is also a way for a farm to get to organic certication. And, he said, managed grazing is a key component of building
soil health. The specics of a forage chain vary from farm to farm due to climate and soil types. But a forage chain often uses a combination of annual and perennial crops. Pastures vary in their growth rates by season, Solberg said. Cool-season forages have two growth peaks – in early spring and in the fall. Cool-season pasture forages include ryegrass, small grains, alfalfa, red clover, ladino clover, tall fescue, orchardgrass and Kentucky bluegrass. By contrast, warm-season forages hit their peak production during the hot summer months. Warm-season forages include Bermuda grass, switchgrass, bluestem, sorghum-Sudan grass and pearl millet. Most pastures in the Upper Midwest are made up of cool-season plants, Solberg said. These pastures are marked by three gaps in production. One gap comes in the spring, one in summer and the third gap arrives in the fall when the plants go dormant. Solberg suggested using winter annuals for early spring grazing. These plants can be planted alone or together, in the year before they are to be grazed. Solberg said to use cereal rye, triticale and hairy vetch. “It’s a great opportunity to get animals out on pasture early, as you’re giving your permanent pastures an opportunity to get going,” he said. “And it’s a nice, clean place for calving.” Be sure to have a plan for terminating these winter annuals when it is time to move cattle back to permanent pastures, Solberg said. Then, other forages or a cash crop can be planted where the winter annuals were. Fast-forward to July and August
Stockpiled forage might be best eaten by dry cows, whose energy requirements are lower. Maybe set aside an area in the summer, let the pasture grow and graze after a killing frost. Solberg said doing that could provide several more weeks of grazing. Stretch the fall season by letting animals graze crop residue, such as corn stubble. Or, extend the season with annuals planted in the late spring or summer as cover crops. Livestock can graze there after the cover crops have been harvested. Solberg said he favors a cover crop blend containing at least three grasses, three legumes and three broadleaves. An example is oats, Sudangrass and pearl millet as the grasses; eld peas, sunn hemp and crimson clover as the legumes; and sunowers, buckwheat and purple-top turnips as the broadleaves. Figuring out the composition of a cover crop blend can be difcult, Solberg said. But he mentioned a website that can make it easier: https://smartmix.greencoverseed.com/. Outwintering cattle on pasture and letting them have access to large bales of hay at the same time can also extend the season. One way is to place big bales and run an electric wire that limits how many bales the cattle can access. Allow access to fresh bales simply by moving the wire. Feeding a total mixed ration (TMR) on the ground in a pasture can also work, Solberg said. Move the feeding area every so often and make sure the cattle have a place to get out of the wind. Solberg said cattle will walk back to the buildings for water.

when the summer slump often sets in. “This is the big one most people struggle with throughout the grazing season,” Solberg said. Build long enough pasture rest periods into a grazing plan and a farm can be stockpiling forages. “This can buy us one to even four weeks of extra grazing into the summer slump,” Solberg said. “Sometimes it can get be enough to get us through that summer slump.” Base pasture rest periods on how the grass is doing and not on the calendar, Solberg said. Pastures sometimes take longer to recover, depending on the year and time of year. So, move livestock to a new area when the grass needs a rest. And keep the stubble that is left when an area has been grazed fairly high. That might mean limiting grazing to a few hours at a time. Longer grazings can damage plants’ roots and their ability to handle drought. One way to stockpile forage, Solberg said, is to let livestock trample some of what is growing. Most nutrition is in the upper third of the plant, so leaving the bottom is not simply wasting feed. Some leaves will be left to capture sunlight and help nourish the roots. Leaving trampled plants also protects the soil from erosion and protects soil microbes, Solberg said. Another way to get through the summer slump is to hay some of the spring surplus of pasture. Harvest 3060 percent and start grazing again 4580 days later. To extend the fall grazing season, stockpile feed from the spring and summer, Solberg said. Get some of that stockpiled feed tested at a qualied lab, so its nutritional content is known.

BMR corn silage can generate more
Three-pound milk increase can overcome 20-percent yield drag By Ron Johnson

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Two developments in recent years placed an emphasis on forage quality, according to Ev Thomas, an agronomist with Oak Point Agronomics, Hammond, N.Y. “Reduced-lignin alfalfa varieties were developed using both conventional plant breeding and genetic engineering,” Thomas said. “And DuPont-Pioneer started selling brown midrib (BMR) corn hybrids, considerably expanding BMR’s market exposure.” He was one of the speakers at the Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference, June 13-14 in Dubuque, Iowa. There’s an inconvenient truth about BMR corn, popular for growing for silage, Thomas said. “BMR corn yields less than conventional corn,” he said. “It always has, ever since the rst Cargill hybrid. Maybe it always will. BMR’s yields have risen over the years. But, he said, so have the yields of conventional hybrids. Thomas said there is no university

trial data showing BMR yields are catching up to conventional corn yields. He cited numbers from corn silage trials conducted in 2017 at Pennsylvania State University. The four BMR varieties averaged 18.3 tons per acre at 35 percent dry matter. Meanwhile, the 44 conventional varieties average 21.9 tons per acre. That translates into a 20 percent higher yield over the BMR corn, Thomas said. Thomas offered observations from his 15 years of experience growing BMR corn. First, he said, avoid planting BMR in thin, droughty soils. Plant it on your best corn ground, but expect a 10-15 percent yield drag. “If you care what the boys in the coffee shop say, plant the guard rows to a leafy hybrid and plant the rest of the eld to BMR,” Thomas said. “BMR corn has less lignin. Often it will bend but not break during summer storms, then recover quickly.” His fourth observation was this warning: Do not let BMR corn mature past about 35 percent dry matter. On how BMR corn performs during a drought, Thomas said there is not much information to go on. “Universities test the hybrids that seed companies enter in their silage hybrid trials,” he said. “No BMR hybrids are entered in most state university trials, and only one or two are entered in others, with the notable exception of Penn

State.” That lack of testing in university eld trials has resulted in limited data comparing the performance of BMR hybrids. “There’s virtually no data on the standability of any hybrids harvested for silage,” Thomas said. The agronomist said BMR is different. “Its cell walls are more fragile,” Thomas said. “It might need to be chopped at 19 to 20 millimeters long to get enough physically effective ber.” Cows need a certain amount of chewing for the best rumen function, he said. Longer particles of corn silage take more time to chew. Thomas recommended feeding a high percentage of forage when also feeding silage made from BMR corn. “If necessary, supplement with lessdigestible, less-fragile forages like straw or late-cut grass,” he said. The agronomist spoke on information discovered through research at the Miner Agricultural Institute, Chazy, N.Y. Several studies on the time cows spend chewing looked at BMR corn silage compared to conventional corn silage. One result, said Thomas, is that cows ate more BMR corn silage, yet they ruminated fewer minutes for every pound of neutral detergent ber (NDF) they consumed. Also, cows on the ration that included BMR corn silage spend ve to 10 fewer minutes eating each pound of NDF. “That adds up to signicantly less time at the feedbunk, or 30 minutes less per day in one study,” Thomas said.
“That’s important if bunk space is limited by high stocking rates.” To get a response in milk production from feeding BMR corn, make sure you feed enough of it. Thomas recommended making BMR silage at least 20 percent of a ration. He said 30 percent is optimum. One way to combat the BMR corn yield drag is to make silage that also contains conventional corn. Thomas said half the rows in a eld could be BMR corn and half could be conventional. The resulting silo blend would be 55 percent regular corn silage and 45 percent BMR silage. Be prepared to feed more of the silo blend. Thomas said to get 11 pounds of BMR dry matter into a cow, she would need to eat 70 pounds of the blended silage. Keep the varieties separate in the eld. “Store BMR corn silage in a separate silo,” Thomas said. “Give priority to the cows that will most benet from it, such as transition cows and high-producing cows.” A cow needs to make at least 60 pounds of milk per day to warrant eating BMR silage, Thomas said. He told farmers to focus on what is important. “BMR corn is so different in terms of yield, digestibility and stress resistance that it’s like a unique species… ” Thomas said. “Fed at the right rate to the right cows, BMR corn should result in a 3-5-pound milk response. Three pounds more milk will pay for a 20 percent yield drag. BMR corn silage has its challenges, but it puts milk in the tank.”

Fuechtmanns welcome uniquely-colored triplet calves By Abby Hopp Staff Intern
MELROSE, Minn. – A set of triplet heifer calves was born May 8 on Henry and Agnes Fuechtmann’s farm. The Fuechtmanns see twins about every 100 births, but triplets are a rst. “Triplets … this is once in a lifetime,” said Henry, a dairy farmer of 50 years. The Fuechtmanns milk 40 cows on a century farm in Stearns County near Melrose, Minn. Henry nished milking and checked a cow calving May 8. “Dad said she had her rst calf on her own, but it was pretty small,” said Henry’s son, Luke. “Knowing that, he felt inside and found the second calf backwards. Then, he left to go nish up chores and when he came back she was having a third calf.”

According to Henry, the calving took 30 minutes for all three calves. This unusual sighting of triplet calves was topped with a complete color variation between the three. “One calf is black with a little white, one is white with a little black and one is brown with a little white,” Luke said. The calves were born to a Holstein-Brown Swiss crossbred cow bred to a white bull the family purchased at a sales barn a few years ago. “Because we have a bull right on the farm, we didn’t know until it was calving that it had twins [or more],” Luke said. “It was all a surprise.” The calves were born strong and healthy at about 60 pounds. They are on bucket feeding and will be weaned off milk soon. “I was surprised to see the third calf,” Henry said. “I was amazed to see that they were all heifers. And, it was cool to see that they were all different colors.”

showing cattle. Growing up surrounded by dairy, Rohner, RohnerSwart and Lien have continued showing cattle throughout the summer. They have traveled across the state to Kandiyohi County Fair, Minnesota State Fair, district shows and several other regional competitions. The rst show of the sea-

Rohner received ďƒžrst place in the senior showmanship competition, and Rohner-Swart exhibited the champion cow of the Holstein show. But the children know success does not come easily. Preparation for Rohner, RohnerSwart and Lien includes tying up the animals for a couple days to calm them down. They continue to give baths, walk them and get them used to being around people. Rohner is the herdsman at Andrew Holsteins and hopes to take over the farm. “I do everything but mix the feed,â€? he said. “I like the genetics aspect always looking to breed for

something better.� Rohner-Swart is a freshman at Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (KMS) High School in Kerkhoven, Minn. She is active in gymnastics and dance, but enjoys the animals the most. “I like being with the animals, especially the atmosphere,� RohnerSwart said. In addition to Rohner and Rohner-Swart, the Swarts have two other grandchildren, Kelsie and Jayden Swart. “They are younger, but we already have them on the halter,� Swart said. While the Swarts lease to many of their family members, they also enjoy sharing their cattle with close family friends. Since Lien was 3 years old, she has leased from the Swarts. “Chloe’s aunt, brother and cous-
ins have also leased for us,â€? Swart said. Lien agreed. “We are close friends with the family and my family got me showing with Mary,â€? Lien said, who will be attending South Dakota State University next year to study dairy production. Along with working with the show animals, Lien also works for another dairy farm. “I like the genetics best,â€? she said. “In showing, you always learn and grow.â€? Mary and Roger also gave the children another opportunity – to start owning their own cattle. “I started owning my own cows when I was 5 or 6 year old,â€? said Rohner, who owns three cows and three heifers. Rohner’s sister owns one heifer, and Lien owns six animals. “I like to see what other people have at shows to make my herd better,â€? Lien said. With owning cattle come responsibilities different than leasing for the summer. The youth breed their own cattle in hopes to keep improving their growing herds. “We breed to Impression, Shottle Trump, Deďƒžant and some others,â€? Rohner said. “I like to keep breeding for something better.â€? The three individuals have gained many qualities from showing dairy cattle with the Swarts. “I learned respect and taking care of the animals,â€? Rohner said. Swart loves watching them develop as people. “They gain maturity having a responsibility of an animal,â€? she said. “The friends, contact and connections they make are incredible.â€? For the foreseeable future, the Swarts plan to continue opening their barn doors for youth to get involved in dairy cattle showing. The program allows youth an opportunity unlike any other, Swart said. “They grow in professional development,â€? she said. “Just to watch the young people become successful in dairy and life is a success. It is very rewarding.â€?

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m involved in the Stratford FFA and the Rozelville Rockets 4-H Club. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I enjoy the fair and making new friends in the dairy industry. There aren’t a lot of kids in my high school involved in the dairy industry, so these organizations allow me to meet and spend time with kids who are. I enjoy my 4-H club the most because I have several dairy friends that I don’t go to school with. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Teaching people at the fair about the dairy industry has been one of favorite experiences. What’s your favorite social media? I like Facebook because I can keep up with pages like Jersey Cattle, Registered Dairy Cattle and the Milkhouse. What are your career aspirations? I plan to attend University of Wisconsin-River Falls for a degree in dairy science. I would like to work as a dairy sire analyst for a company like Select Sires. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I’ve learned leadership skills, how to communicate with other people and to understand different points of view. Who do you look up to? My mom. She’s taught me how to read the catalogs and select bulls that will improve the genetics in our herd and to breed show cows. She’s also taught me how to feed and care for them properly. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I live to sing and am in the choir at our church.

Sydney Kauffman is a sophomore at Stra�ord High School. She milks 65 cows with her family – parents, Kip and Jennifer, and siblings, Sadie and Sailor – in Wood County near Stra�ord, Wis. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help with milking, feeding calves and pretty much everything around the farm. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? The
public’s point of view of dairy farms and how farmers treat their animals. I want to educate people about how hard farmers work for such little pay and how much the animals mean to us. I’d start small with individual contact at fairs. I’d also use social media posts to share how we care for our animals.

Natalie Clemenson 13 years old Eighth grade When do you do chores? I do chores nightly all year long, mornings on the weekends and during the summer. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chores are milking cows and feeding calves because I get to spend time with the cows and calves. These include Terrain, Rose, Durham, Whitney and Sutana. Snickers is my favorite overall. She is a Brown Swiss heifer I bought on an auction with my own money I saved from making crafts I made and sold. What’s your favorite subject in school? Math, because it comes easy for me and makes the most sense to me. What’s something you’ve learned in school recently? I learned how to compare prices by price per ounce at different stores to nd the best deal. What do you want to be when you grow up? A farmer or a veterinarian. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would have a horse with lots of Red and White Holsteins, Holsteins and Brown Swiss. I would have lots of sheds to put heifers and cows in and sort by age. I would also have a nice nursery for calves. What’s your favorite dairy treat? I like ice cream, cheese and chocolate milk. What’s your favorite thing to do during the summer? Walking and training calves for fairs. I like going to fairs and showing. I also like going boating. Are you involved in any activities? I am involved in band, choir, 4-H, basketball, volleyball, showing dairy cattle, dairy judging and dairy quiz bowl. I also plan to be in FFA this fall when I start eighth grade. Showing cows and basketball are my favorites. I enjoy showing because I get to work with my calves and cows, which are like family to me. I also get to meet new people and have hard work pay off. I enjoy basketball because I get to play with my friends, meet new people and enjoy the game.

What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? Dipping cows is my favorite chore because it’s fun. I help feed the baby calves, too. I don’t like washing the dishes because it takes a long time, and I would rather be outside. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? My calf, Milky Way. She was born in December. I have been having fun practicing getting her ready for the fair. We have been walking around the farm together. She is a beautiful calf. I like her a lot. She is friendly. Her name is Milky Way because her mom’s name is Princess Kay. What’s your favorite subject in school? I like P.E. because I get to play kick ball sometimes, and Ms. Bangert is a fun teacher. What’s something you’ve learned in school recently? How to read bigger books. I got my own library card last week. What do you want to be when you grow up? A football player. The public is invited to a Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship Summer Fling Pasture Walk on June 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Haugen’s Springside Farm in Canton, Minn. The main focus will be on pasture production to improve farm economics. Jim Paulson and Olaf Haugen will help us discuss pasture production nancials and forage ideas for the Haugen farm. Before lunch, we will briey discuss current dairy farming pressures and hear results from an ongoing study looking at nancial performance of dairy grazing farms in four states. Jim Paulson and Tom Cadwallader will be covering the results of the grazing dairy study. Afternoon discussion will include a tour and review of Haugen’s pasture. The public is invited to a Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship Summer Fling Pasture Walk on July 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wagner Organic Dairy Farm in Brandon, Minn. The main focus will be on pasture production to improve farm economics. Kent Solberg and Jeff Duchene will help us discuss pasture production nancials and forage ideas for the Wagner Farm. This year’s theme is Connections, Challenges and Celebrations. The 2018 Conference will deliver a full menu of decision-making ingredients for today’s volatile economic climate: the current outlook for ag trade agreements, marketing strategies for low commodity prices, nancial risk management tactics, income and estate-tax tips, and the latest on the new farm bill. The keynote speakers will highlight the unique challenges of women’s roles, offer opportunities to laugh and learn, and to celebrate agriculture. The one-day conference runs from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Mary Kay Thatcher, former American Farm Bureau senior director of Congressional relations and current senior lead of Federal Government Relations for Syngenta, will keynote the conference with the latest highlights on the 2018 farm bill. Thatcher also will share her experiences as an ag leader, and encourage women to pursue active roles in agricultural associations and agribusinesses. Keri Jacobs, Iowa State University ag economist and cooperatives specialist, will offer her insights on producer cooperatives in an era of ag competition and consolidation. The newly acquired property, Kubota Ranch, will strengthen the company’s roots in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth region and allow it to bring its dealers closer to its headquarters for previews of new Kubota products. Kubota Ranch offers the company ample eld space for testing, training, operating and demonstrating Kubota equipment – digging, plowing, excavating, maneuvering, and assessing equipment and implement functionality, as well as utilizing farm equipment to tend to the land, including the possibility of eventually growing, mowing and baling hay. The four small utility buildings located on the property today will remain, and Kubota has a vision to build additional amenities to make Kubota Ranch a dealer destination and testing ground to preview and unveil Kubota equipment to its dealers. “Kubota has considered a land purchase of this nature for quite some time, and with our Grapevine headquarters in such close proximity, the opportunity to expand our operations and research and development capabilities here in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth region makes solid business sense,” said Masato Yoshikawa, Kubota Tractor Corporation president and CEO. “With this land, we will now be able to expand our physical footprint and build out our vision for the ranch to evaluate and test our equipment. Due to health reasons, owners have decided to discontinue milking cows at this time. This is a very young herd of cows w/66 cows being in their 1st or 2nd lactation. Sires from Genex have been used as well as top registered herd sires. These are nice dairy framed cows w/proper feet & legs and exceptionally nice udders. The herd is housed in a tie stall barn and left out for exercise as well. Current bulk tank receipts show a 73 lb. per cow average, 4.0% B.F. & SCC in the 130,000 range. This sale will feature several cows milking from 80 to over 100 lbs. per day. There also will be approx. 15 close springing cows as well.
