“I wanted to make sure that the cows were comfortable,” Kirckof said.

She also uses an epoxy lined feed manger for the cows.

BELGRADE, Minn. – Shaina Kirckof’s determination and appreciation for dairy cows is undeniable, and with the right facilities, she has remained competitive in the dairy industry.

Kirckof milks 80 cows in a tiestall barn on her parents’, Mark and Kara, farm in Stearns County near Belgrade, Minn.

Dairy farmers across the state toured Kirckof’s farm site during Minnesota Milk Producers Association’s Summer Escape tour June 13.

“I always loved the farm,” Kirckof said. “Even when I was teaching in Fargo, N.D., I was still coming home every weekend to help milk.”

Seven years ago – after a re that destroyed the original farm structures – Kirckof began milking in a newly built dairy barn.

“After a lot of time and consideration, I took out a loan and just started to rebuild everything on my parents’ farm,” Kirckof said.

The herd is housed in a New York-styled tiestall barn.

This barn design allowed Kirckof to take the concept of a parlor and adapt it to her herd size and capabilities as a one-person operation.

“I toured approximately 100 farms before I started and noticed that with low ceilings, it’s as hot as a pistol,” Kirckof said. “That isn’t good for the cows or for the people working in the barn.”

Inside the milk room, Kirckof installed in-oor heating to keep the oor dry and warm.

“Anything that is a re hazard is not allowed on my farm,” Kirckof said.

The in-oor heating also provides a warm place for Kirckof to bring newborn calves in the winters.

Other features of the barn have made dairying by herself doable for Kirckof.

She modernized the milking system with Waikato Milking Systems’ AIC units. These milkers measure body temperature, somatic cell count, butter fat content and milk consistency.

“It’s really good at showing if my employees are prepping well,” Kirckof said.

To manage through low milk prices, Kirckof has opted to do much of the herd health by herself.

She does her own breeding and veterinary work, such as articial insemination, IVing, pumping, drenching and drawing blood samples for pregnancy checks.

“I really enjoy it because I can test each of the cows at 30 days exactly,” Kirckof said.

If a cow is not conrmed pregnant, she either gives them a second dosage of lutalyse or calls the veterinarian for further assistance in seeing if a follicle or corpus luteum is present.

“I just started doing this four months ago, but it’s been going really well,” Kirckof said. “I have a conception rate of 60 percent.”

When Kirckof began dairying, she also designed a youngstock barn to t her needs.

The calf facility was originally a hay shed. Kirckof opened up the back end of it to create more ventilation. In the winter, she is able to close it with bales in front of the pens.

The rst section is where newborn calves are housed in individual stalls.

“I designed all the calf stalls. They’re really slick,” Kirckof said.

The calf stalls come apart for easy cleaning and care for the animals.

All the wet calves are bedded with straw. This past year Kirckof used bean hull bales for the older calves, which worked well, she said.

Calves receive colostrum for up to ve days after birth. Kirckof collects the colostrum within the rst three milkings. After the colostrum is used, calves receive milk replacer for 2-3 months, depending on the size and health of the calf.

At 4 days old, they also receive starter feed.

When calves are 2-3 months old, they are moved into a group pen where they learn to socialize. Here, they also begin a transition diet of one-third starter to two-thirds regular feed.

Youngstock then continue moving through the barn in groups until 13 months of age, when they are placed with a herd bull for breeding.

From calves to cows, Kirckof has a farm that ts what she needs as a one-person operation and to remain competitive in today’s dairy industry.

CLEAR LAKE, S.D. – The Andringa family has made some major moves during the past 20 years.

This spring, the Andringas – Sietse and Aafke along with their children, Ytsje, 18, Jan, 16, Aukje, 14, Hessel, 12, Gerrit, 5, and Melle, 3 – made one of those major move when they installed 16 robotic milkers in their main 1,800-cow farm, Sunrise Dairy, near Clear Lake, S.D. The robots were put in during an eight-week period that began March 5.

More than 1,400 of the 1,800 cows at Sunrise Dairy are being milked by robots.

“One of the biggest challenges of switching to robots has been managing our employees,” Andringa said, noting the farm’s employees. “Instead of pushing the cows, we have to learn to let the cows decide when to milk themselves.

Another challenge has been balancing the ration. The cows get a pelletized treat while they are being milked in the robot. This meant that we had to go from feeding a TMR to using a partially mixed ration. It’s important to have your nutritionist on board if you’re going to switch to robots.”

Andringa said many larger dairy farms are looking at making the move to robotic milkers.

“We couldn’t have put in the robots unless we could prove to our banker that it pays,” Andringa said. “Our experience at Sunrise West, [our other dairy facility], showed us that milking robots are worth the investment. After we installed the rst eight robots, milk production went up 10%. We have seen a 10% reduction in our cull rates and our reproductive efciency has improved by 10%. But, I think the biggest

benet is the free ow of cows. Each animal gets to decide when she will be milked.”

Labor savings are another benet for the Andringas.

“Under the old system, we needed one employee for every 100 cows,” Andringa said. “Our goal is to get that down to one employee for every 300 cows. Within the next year, we hope to be averaging 75,000 pounds of milk per day per employee.”

The Andringas have reaped other advantages from their milking robots.

“We do 90% of our heat detection based on cow activity that is reported to us by the robots. This has reduced our repro costs,” Andringa said. “We are looking at adding [somatic cell count] monitors that can check each cow’s SCC a couple of times per week. In the future, we may be able to avoid dry treating some of the cows at dry-off.

This will allow us to use fewer medications. At the end of the day, the robots will enable us to provide our consumers with more information and give our consumers a better product.”

Another cutting-edge feature the Andringas have embraced is a system that can track the location of each individual cow. This is made possible with a series of wireless receivers that have been installed on the ceilings throughout the barns.

“If we want to locate a particular cow, all we have to do is enter her ear tag number into our smartphones and we can instantly tell where she is,” Andringa said. “This is especially handy if you need to nd a cow that needs to be bred.”

Dairying has always been a part of the Sietse and Aafke’s lives. They grew up a few miles apart on modest dairy farms located in the Friesland region of the Netherlands. Sietse’s parents milked 50 cows while Aafke’s parents owned a 100-cow dairy operation. Sietse and Aafke were wed in April 1999.

In October 1999, Sietse and Aafke, along with Sietse’s brother, Jogchum, and parents, Jan and Aukje, moved to Alberta, Canada and purchased a 90Turn to ANDRINGAS | Page 5

“We didn’t like dealing with the Canadian milk quota system,” Sietse said. “We had to buy quota whenever we wanted to expand.”

In 2003, the Andringa family purchased a 350-cow dairy facility under construction near Clear Lake, S.D. They named their new operation Sunrise Dairy.

“We came to America because we wanted to be able to expand our dairy and make room for other family members,” Andringa said.

The Andringa family’s story is one of continual growth and improvement.

By 2005, they had expanded their herd to 650 head. In 2013, they built additional freestall barns and boosted their herd to 1,300 head.

for sale. The Andringas purchased the dairy and named it Sunrise West.

“We had been looking into robotic milkers for some time,” Andringa said.

“In 2016, we remodeled part of Sunrise West to accommodate four robot milkers. We liked how they worked, so the next year we added four more robots.”

The Andringa family marked another major milestone March 26 when Ytsje was crowned the 2019 South Dakota Dairy Princess. The Dairy Princess contest was held in conjunction with

the Central Plains Dairy Expo.

“As a dad, you are proud to have your kids interested in the industry that you grew up with,” Andringa said. “We will be happy if any of our kids decide to join the operation. But if none do, that’s ne, too. The best thing you can do for a child is give them a strong work ethic and the best place to do that is on a dairy farm.”

The Andringa family is conscious of how consumers perceive the dairy industry.

“Dairy farming has reduced its car-

bon footprint by 63% since 1944,” Andringa said. “This is important because companies are going to be judged based on their carbon footprint rating. And, we have to give our consumers what they want. The day will come when we will be dealing with a generation of consumers who trust their smartphones more than they trust Grandma. … We are always looking ahead, and we think that robots are the future. We need to remember yesterday, but we must continue to look toward tomorrow.”

Brandts reap benets of organic production

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. – For Nathan and Jenny Brandt, the biggest benets of being organic dairy producers are found in the way they manage their herd at their Buffalo Ridge Organic Dairy near Fountain City, Wis. “It’s relatively simple and easy for treating the cows,” Nathan said. “We don’t have to worry about things like the voluntary feed directive rules or antibiotic resistance.”

The Brandts took over Nathan’s parent’s farm in December 2016 after working on the farm since their graduations from the University of WisconsinRiver Falls in 2012. Nathan’s parents had gone through the transition to organic dairy several years earlier, receiving their organic certication in 2005.

Nathan and Jenny are the fth generation on the farm and raising the sixth generation with their children Beau, 5, Riley, 3, Adalynn, 2, and Freya, 6 months.

“The hard part was done for us,” Nathan said. “We are just reaping the benets of the decision my parents made to become certied organic producers.”

According to Nathan, the nal decision to become certied organic producers came when his parents faced the crossroad of needing a new barn to replace their aging facility. They were unable to justify the cost at the price of conventional milk.

“They couldn’t see taking the risk to build a new barn, but they needed a new barn to continue dairy farming,” Nathan said. “It was either go organic or get out.”

Nathan said most of the work for his parents to transition to organic production was completing paperwork and gaining access to additional land.

“Land access was the biggest barrier,” Nathan said. “Before that time, they didn’t have quite enough land to make it viable, but then the opportunity to rent a neighboring farm that had been in all grass came up.”

When the decision was made to pursue organic production, the Brandts built a new freestall barn and a double-4 auto-ow parlor in 2005.

Since taking over the farm, Nathan and Jenny have added an additional 50 acres. In order to put that acreage into organic production, they seeded alfalfa.

Alfalfa allowed them to discontinue spraying while providing a cash-crop they could market to conventional dairy farmers until the acreage was certied

to produce feed for their herd.

The Brandt’s herd is comprised primarily of Holsteins, and they began utilizing crossbreeding two years ago using Brown Swiss sires. Those earliest crossbred calves are now 2-year-olds, entering the milking herd.

“We like the strength and the components that crossbreeding with Brown Swiss offers,” Jenny said. “Our Holsteins were getting too narrow in the chest, and this was a good way to bring back strength while adding to the components we get paid for.”

Besides selecting for increased strength and vigor, for the past three years, the Brandts have been selecting bulls for the A2A2 beta casein and BB kappa casein genes.

“It’s not something our creamery is really using or pushing yet, but we are looking towards the future and want to be prepared for when they do want it,” Jenny said. “It pays to be proactive.”

The Brandts herd now carries a rolling herd average of over 20,000 pounds of milk with a 3.7% butterfat and 3% protein test.

A TMR is fed to the lactating herd as well as the dry cows and heifers. The mix is comprised of haylage, corn and added minerals. Kelp is added to the mix for micronutrients, and aloe pellets are added in the winter to help prevent respiratory issues such as pneumonia.

“We would like to improve our pastures,” Nathan said. “We are semi-rotational now, but I’d like to do more dividing and organizing them, giving them more time to grow and rest.”

Jenny said that will become easier next year as they have ground that will come out of hay production and be turned into pasture.

The Brandts seasonally freshen their cows, but, instead of the traditional spring and early summer calving, they calve their cows at the end of August through mid-December.

“By calving in the fall, the cows aren’t milking in the peak heat and y season,” Nathan said. “We’re also not trying to raise our calves in those conditions.”

The Brandts had raised their calves in individual stalls, but, when their cows start calving this fall, they plan to change to group pens fed with mob feeders.

They raise about 30 heifer calves each year and plan to use three groups of 10 calves in their new management plan.

“A big reason that we are going to try group raising our calves is for labor purposes,” Jenny said.

“We’ve done some reading about the experiences others have had doing it, and we think it will t well for us.”

Nathan and Jenny also cited issues their calves have with developing stress scours when moved to group housing after weaning. They hope to alleviate that stress by having the calves in groups from the beginning.

“Originally we had thought to use auto feeders, but they proved to be cost prohibitive for us at this

Marketing their milk organically gives the Brandts security to their goal setting and planning.

“We sign a contract with Westby Cooperative Creamery in April, setting our milk price for the year,” Nathan said. “That allows us to be able to plan a little more. We know what we are looking at for income potential for the year.”

Nathan and Jenny appreciate the added stability afforded them by the year-long milk contracts which allows them to continue to build a future for their family.

“That family tradition, ve and six generations of dairy farming, that is the biggest reason we keep doing this,” Jenny said. “Someone’s got to do it; it might as well be us.”

Metzgers’ 17-year-old Jersey still lls the tank

LESTER, Iowa – Ever since Rodney Metzger introduced his children to milking, there has been one cow they can count on being in the parlor with a full udder. After 15 years, not much has changed.

“We really didn’t realize it until a few years ago, but Fanny has put over half of the milk in our bulk tank,” Metzger said.

Fanny – 17-year-old Summetz Stephen Fence Fanny – is Metzger’s favorite cow on his family’s 250-cow registered Jersey farm.

Metzger and his wife, Polly, and their ve children –Emma and Tyler Moser, Vance and Janae, Eric and Abby, Neil and Mattie, and Toby – are the owners and operators of Summit Farm Inc. near Lester, Iowa. In addition to dairy farming, the family also runs 800 acres of cropland.

Fanny is the oldest cow in the herd on the farm, which was started in the 1960s.

Fanny celebrated her 17th birthday March 1. Two weeks later, she had her 15th calf – a heifer sired by Irwin.

Fanny’s longevity has surprised the Metzgers as her sire was a young bull.

She really does stand alone.

“We really didn’t expect her to live as long as she has,” Metzger said. “At 8 years of age, we knew she was a nice cow but never even dreamed that she would be 17.”

Fanny’s longevity has not gone unnoticed at the dairy.

In January of 2018, she placed ninth

in milk production for the American Jersey Cattle Association’s Leading Living Lifetime Production Contest.

This year, she topped that in a span of 4,571 days of production - producing 271,884 pounds of milk, 11,964 pounds of butter fat, and 9,675 pounds of protein. These values earn her a rank of fth highest in the nation for milk production, seventh for butter fat and sixth for protein for the Jersey breed.

That was only a start for Fanny she also scored an Excellent 94 points this year.

“To maintain high production and

score that well is rare and really special in a breed like that,” Metzger said.

Surprisingly, Fanny has few challenges for her age, namely one or two bouts of mastitis in her entire lifetime.

“She’s a little slow, but hasn’t had any denite challenges,” Metzger said.

“She’s just a really healthy cow.”

Once the Metzgers realized this cow was producing so well at 17 years old with little to no difculties, they decided it would be best to put her in loose housing away from the other cows.

“She can still get up in the freestall barn, but she’s just so old we thought it was the best decision,” Metzger said.

Twice a day at milking time, Metzger and his children still count on seeing Fanny in the milking parlor with the rest of the herd. She is always ready to put a full udder’s worth of milk into the bulk tank.

Of Fanny’s 15 calves, only ve have been heifers. Two of those are still in the herd today.

Despite her age, the Metzgers are trying to get her to cycle right now.

“She’s just been able to breed back so well, usually there are a lot of problems in our herd if they don’t,” said Metzger, who attributes Fanny’s long lifespan to her health and fertility.

The Metzgers plan to see how long they can maintain Fanny and keep her milking. She is a family favorite and herd underdog, having grown up with the Metzgers and proving her worth on the dairy.

“I would really like to see how long she can live and what she does with the rest of her time here,” Metzger said.

2019 production estimated at 218 billion pounds

The Agriculture Department lowered its 2019 milk production estimate for the seventh month in a row in the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, blaming slower-than-anticipated growth in milk per cow and lower expected cow numbers. The 2020 forecast was also reduced as higher anticipated feed costs are expected to weaken producer margins, limiting growth in the dairy cow herd and milk per cow next year.

2019 production and marketings are now estimated at 218.2 and 217.2 billion pounds respectively, down 500 million pounds from last month’s estimate. If realized, 2019 production would be up just 600 million pounds or 0.3 percent from 2018.

2020 production and marketings are estimated at 221.9 and 220.9 billion pounds respectively, down 800 million pounds on production from last month’s estimate and 700 million pounds lower on marketings. If realized, 2020 production would be up 3.7 billion pounds or 1.7 percent from 2019.

The 2019 Class III milk price forecast was reduced on lower expected cheese and whey prices. It’s estimated to average $15.90 per hundredweight, down 15 cents from last month’s projection but would be $1.29 above the 2018 average and compares to $16.17 in 2017.

The 2020 average is put at $16.65, up a dime from last month’s estimate and 75 cents above what is expected for 2019.

The Class IV price forecast was raised on higher forecast butter and NDM prices. The 2019 average is expected at around $16.40, up 20 cents from last month’s projection and would be $2.17 above the 2018 average and compares with $15.16 in 2017. The 2020 Class IV average is now put at $16.85, up a nickel from a month ago and would be 45 cents above what’s expected for 2019.

The WASDE’s 2019/20 U.S. corn outlook is for increased beginning stocks and imports, sharply lower production, reduced feed and residual use and exports, and smaller ending stocks. Beginning stocks are up reďƒ&#x;ecting a 100 million bushel decline in projected exports for 2018/19 to 2.2 billion bushels, based on current outstanding sales and reduced U.S. price competitiveness. Corn production for 2019/20 is forecast to decline 1.4 billion bushels to 13.7 billion, which if realized would be the lowest since 2015/16. The WASDE adds that “Unprecedented planting delays observed through early June are expected to prevent some plantings and reduce yields.â€?

USDA will release its Acreage report on June 28, which will provide survey-based indications of planted and harvested area. With sharply lower supplies, use is projected to decline 425 million bushels to 14.3 billion,

based on reductions to feed and residual use and exports.

With supplies falling more than use, ending stocks are projected to decline 810 million bushels to 1.7 billion, which if realized would be the lowest since 2013/14. The season-average farm price was raised 50 cents to $3.80 per bushel.

This month’s soybean supply and use projections include higher beginning and ending stocks. Beginning stocks were raised reďƒ&#x;ecting a 75 million bushel reduction in projected exports for 2018/19 based on lowerthan-expected shipments in May and a lower import forecast for China. Adverse weather has signiďƒžcantly slowed soybean planting this year but area and production forecasts were unchanged with several weeks remaining in the planting season.

With soybean use unchanged, 2019/20 ending stocks are projected at 1.045 billion bushels, down 25 million from the revised 2018/19 projection. Other changes for 2018/19 include increased soybean meal imports and exports, reduced soybean oil used for biodiesel production, and higher soybean oil ending stocks. The 2019/20 season-average price for soybeans is forecast at $8.25 per bushel, up 15 cents reďƒ&#x;ecting the impact of higher corn prices. Soybean meal prices are forecast at $295 per short ton, up $5.

The latest Crop Progress report shows 83% of U.S. corn is in the ground, as of the week ending June 9, up from 67% the previous week, but 16% below a year ago and 16% behind the ďƒžve year average. 62% of the corn has emerged, 31% behind a year ago and 31% behind the ďƒžve year average. 59% of the crop is rated good to excellent, down from 77% a year ago.

Farmers have 60% of the soybeans in the ground, up from 39% the previous week, 32% behind a year ago, and 28% below the ďƒžve year average. 34% have emerged, down from 81% a year ago and 39% behind the ďƒžve year average.

The cotton crop is 75% planted, 13% behind a year ago, and 12% behind the ďƒžve year average. 44% is rated good to excellent, down from 42% a year ago.

Cash dairy prices seemed a bit confused the second week of June as record high heat hit the West Coast and traders anticipated the June 18 May Milk Production report. The Cheddar blocks hit $1.80 per pound Thursday, highest CME price since February 2017, but then retraced Friday, closing at $1.7825, still up 3 cents on the week, 18 3/4-cents above a year ago, and likely the highest priced cheese globally.

The barrels ďƒžnished at $1.6050, up 7 cents, 15 1/2-cents above a year ago, but a still too high 17 3/4-cents below the blocks. Trading amounted to 18 cars of block on the week at the CME and 28 of barrel.

To be sure, that same story has played out this year as well. But the story differs in that the US, and to some degree the world, is just not awash in milk as weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen the past few years.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen a burst of barrel production over the past month or so courtesy of some otherwise concerning demand issues, weaker demand on Mozzarella in particular, not burdensome excesses of fresh milk. Because of this, we see the barrel market as nearing the tail end of this ď&#x192;&#x17E;re sale.â&#x20AC;?

He adds that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Spring milk production is tighter than expected this time of year not because of weather, but because of economics. This dynamic, we believe, could become exacerbated with summer heat and higher feed costs.â&#x20AC;?

Dairy Market News reports that cheese demand is moving in a positive direction, according to Midwestern cheese producers, particularly specialty cheese and curds. Some production schedules are at full-bore. Milk for cheese is available, â&#x20AC;&#x153;relatively,â&#x20AC;? and spot milk prices ranged from 50 cents over to $1 under Class. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a bevy of dairy farmers have shuttered in the Midwest and elsewhere in the nation, cheesemakers say they notice those losses,â&#x20AC;? says DMN. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Health of the cheese markets is a concern to contacts in the region and elsewhere and, as the CME block to barrel price rift looms, contacts question whether block prices will abate, barrel prices will ascend, or a combination of both. Either way, contacts are leery of a price gap larger than a dime.â&#x20AC;?

Stability is the order of the day in the western cheese market, according to DMN. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On one hand, downward price pressures on barrels were noticeable in the past week as customer preferences are moving from processed to natural cheese. On the other hand, block prices are increasing, causing a limitation in demand when prices are higher than $1.70.â&#x20AC;? Contacts claim the over 20 cent spread between blocks and barrels has a negative impact on the market. Block supplies are tighter than barrels, partly due to higher block exports at the beginning of the year. However, both have substantial stocks, though not overwhelming. Cheese output and sales are steady. Some of the trade concerns with Mexico have been lifted because the two countries reached agreements that avoided a trade war.

Butter marched to $2.4050 per pound Tuesday but saw a Friday closing at $2.3650, down 3 1/4-cents on the week but 1 1/4-cents above a year ago, with a hefty 47 carloads exchanging hands.

Midwestern butter supplies are a bit tight while demand is steadfast, according to DMN. Buyers are ď&#x192;&#x17E;nding deals on bulk butter out West and suggest that availability there may keep butter markets from a full-on bullish push. That said, market prices are â&#x20AC;&#x153;brandishing their horns nonetheless,â&#x20AC;? says DMN. Western butter demand remains ahead of expectations. Contacts are seeing some seasonal slowdown but not to the extent they might see normally. Food service and bulk butter demand are especially strong for this time of the year. Butter makers say brokers keep looking for available deals but low-priced deals are scarce. Output is active and would be stronger if more cream was available.

Grade A nonfat dry milk held at $1.0550 per pound for six consecutive sessions only to close Friday at $1.0525 per pound, a quarter-cent lower on the week but 26 1/2-cents above a year ago. There were 4 sales on the week.

Spot dry whey ď&#x192;&#x17E;nished a quarter-cent lower on the week, closing at 36 1/4-cents per pound, 4 3/4-cents below a year ago, with 4 cars sold on the week.

ConƟnued from MIELKE | Page 10 Checking demand, HighGround Dairy (HGD) reports that while U.S. dairy export disappearance is down 14.3% year to date, “impressive March and April totals have pushed domestic year to date disappearance up 5.4%.” They state that “Disappearance dropped lower in nonfat dry milk, dry whey, and whey protein concentrate versus prior year, but all other commodities climbed higher.”

“Total cheese disappearance continued higher in April for the third consecutive month, pushing year to date disappearance up 0.5% for the strongest start to the year on record. Butter disappearance marked the strongest start to a year since 2014, and total NFDM disappearance was down 8.5% but the April 2018 comparison was the strongest single month for nonfat dry milk disappearance since June 2012, lessening the overall market impact of the decline.”

HGD adds that “Volatility continues to mark dry whey disappearance year to date, with total demand recovering versus the paltry March totals but remaining lower versus prior year for the fth consecutive month.”

From Washington; Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced that signup begins June 17 for the new Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program, what the USDA called “the cornerstone program of the dairy safety net that helps dairy producers manage the volatility of milk and feed prices.”

The 2018 Farm Bill allowed USDA to construct the new DMC, which replaces the Margin Protection Program for Dairy and offers protection to dairy producers when the difference between the all-milk price and the average feed cost (the margin) falls below a certain dollar amount selected by the producer.

The National Milk Producers Federation welcomed USDA’s announcement and praised the department’s inclusion of the cost of high-quality alfalfa feed in payment calculations, “a boon for dairy farmers facing a fth year of low prices.”

“The DMC provides a stronger safety net for America’s dairy producers, one sorely needed as low prices, trade disturbances and chaotic weather patterns combine to create hardships,” said Jim Mulhern, NMPF president and CEO. “We have advocated for months that margin calculations must consider the higher feed costs dairy producers pay to properly nourish their livestock.”

In other news, NMPF, the U.S. Dairy Export Council, the International Dairy Foods Association, and more than 960 other groups representing the U.S. food and agriculture value chain called on Congress this week to quickly ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

A joint letter sent to representatives of top-producing dairy states detailed how the provisions of the USMCA “positively impact the U.S. dairy industry.” It states; “The timely resolution of ongoing trade disputes and negotiations is critical to growing the dairy sector’s international market share as well as maintaining credibility with U.S. trading partners. Therefore, the dairy community is asking Congress for immediate passage of this important trade agreement.”

The organizations wrote: “On behalf of the dairy farms and businesses in your district, please pursue a USMCA vote without delay by working to resolve any outstanding issues as swiftly as possible and then quickly ratify the trade deal to send a clear message to the world that America still values fair trade and robust trade partnerships with our allies.”

NMPF’s Jim Mulhern says “Solidifying and expanding trade opportunities abroad through USMCA will improve the prospects of dairy farms here at home. In the midst of uncertainty surrounding our trade relationships and yet another year of meager milk prices, the U.S. lost an average of seven dairy farms a day in 2018. The passage of USMCA will instill a renewed sense of optimism in our farmers.”

The USDEC’s Tom Vilsack stated “The successful resolution of the Section 232 retaliatory tariffs helped pave the way for this critical trade agreement; while we work together to secure its passage Congress must also stand against the imposition of any additional tariffs that

could jeopardize forward progress.”

The 2019 planting season is going to go down in the history books as the slowest on record with the most acres not planted. If you have never experienced anything like this before it is because it has never happened in the past.

As I write this week’s commentary I can’t help but be overwhelmed with following God’s lead to encourage.

Being around agriculture my whole life has taught me that if you want to be a farmer it is imperative that we trust in the Lord for his blessings. It doesn’t matter how talented you are at producing crops, how good of machinery and land you have, it all comes down to how our land is blessed by each season.

I remember one summer farming in SD when it was extremely dry. The area churches got together for a prayer service in a park and prayed for rain. There was no rain in the forecast, but before we left the park that day our county received a rain blessing that made our crops.

Don’t underestimate the power of prayer and trusting in our heavenly Father. He does care about us and will be faithful. In his word he promises to meet the needs of all that trust in Him. It appears that we are in the home stretch with planting

and in the final minutes there still remains challenges in completing the task in key growing regions. For many, crop insurance protection may be what keeps the grocery bills paid this year but may not keep the livestock fed if your farm didn’t get a crop planted.

Feed and grain prices are starting to face the reality of the challenge that lies ahead in balancing supply availability with demand needs. Exports, ethanol, and feed demand are already starting the fight for expected available supplies pushing prices higher. How high they need to go is dependent on how the crop that got planted performs in the coming months.

Milk prices will likely eventually respond to higher input cost side of the business by moving higher, but may function in a time delay as the front end market situation has not yet felt the full sting from higher priced feed inputs. Stay optimistic, and hang in there.

Sacquitne has long history of dairy chores, baking

DECORAH, Iowa – At age 87, Lorraine ‘Sis’ Sacquitne is still feeding calves along with prepping for milking and cleaning up afterward but not for much longer.

Any day now, her duties in the barn will end as the last 11 cows are sold at the Sacquitne family’s dairy farm near Decorah, Iowa.

The sale leaves Sacquitne more time for another skill for which she is well known – baking Norwegian treats from lefsa to kringla to rømmegrøt as well as her own bread and butter.

Sacquitne has worked at the dairy farm her entire married life. First, she farmed with her husband, Buddy (Forrest), who passed away in 2002, and his father. Later, her son, Bruce, and her twin daughters, Doris and Lois, took on

the management. With Bruce ready to retire with his wife, the twins will rely on their off-farm jobs while still living at the farm.

Another son, Gary, and his family are at the farm often as well. Daughter Kay and son Lars do not live in the area, but their families are quick to place orders for Sacquitne’s baking when a visit is planned. She has eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Calves were always Sacquitne’s specialty. Even now, Sacquitne said her daughters complain she has spoiled the calves by keeping them on the bottle too long.

Sacquitne has always been the one to set up the milking system, although she said she is too short to swing the pipeline to the bulk tank. She also washes the outside of the milkers and cleans up in the milkhouse.

Few people visit Sacquitne without being sent home carrying a collection of cookies or one of the seven or eight loaves of bread she bakes every week.

“Don’t ask me how many kinds of cookies I have in the freezer,” she said.

“I love to bake.”

For 40 years, she was the person who demonstrated making lefsa – a thin potato pancake – at Nordic Fest. Sacquitne used to make 500 dozen lefsa a year but is down to 20-25 dozen. She shrugs when asked why hers is special.

“Some will say it’s thinner,” she said. “Sometimes when you try to fold the lefsa you get other places, it breaks.”

three dozen of her treats to friends at the event’s parade.

Sacquitne’s Christmas baking reads like a Scandinavian cookbook: krumkake, rosettes, sandbakkels and fattigmand.

She makes atbread and klub (blood bread) any time and not only during the holidays.

But, Sacquitne only makes her lutesk in the microwave.

“That way it doesn’t stink up the house,” she said.

Surprisingly, Sacquitne is not Norwegian.

“My mother-in-law was a good

teacher,” she said of her recipes.

Born in Clayton County, Sacquitne helped her family as they moved between several rented farms. At 15, she began housekeeping when her mother passed away. She helped raise ve brothers and sisters before her father remarried.

But, it is the Sacquitnes whose farm history is documented in old photos. It began on a sesquicentennial farm seven miles north of their current farm in Highland Township. The original acreage is still owned by the family, rented out and surrounded by state land. A 1909 bridge crosses the creek at the property’s edge.

“We found certicates from the family’s emigration from Norway in 1856,” Sacquitne said.

They also found a membership certicate to the Holstein-Friesian Association of America for S.O. Sacquitne and Son, dated 1928, and an award for the National Dairy Association Honor Roll from 1931.

There are other awards in the family – honors for two cows that produced more than 200,000 pounds of milk each in their lifetimes, a distinguished dairyman recognition for Buddy and recognition for Doris and Lois as the county’s outstanding young dairy producers.

“I’m proud that we always had such a good herd,” Sacquitne said. “We always kept up the registered cattle, and we sold a lot through the years.”

But, Sacquitne is ready to give up dairying. Always thrifty, she is worried about buying too much milk house soap that will not get used before the cows go.

“Lois said we should keep one cow till the fall to feed us and the cats, but I’m not going to wash a pipeline for one cow,” Sacquitne said.

There is at least one regret, however.

For her baking, Sacquitne will now have to buy butter at the store.

nothing unusual about hosting large gatherings of people at their picturesque High Hillside Acres farm nestled in the hills of the Traverse Valley near Independence, Wis.

I left them on in the winter when the cows were in the barn all the time, and her dad asked me why I still had the bells on. Eventually, I decided I liked them. They are like our trademark.â&#x20AC;?

The bells also serve a practical purpose, allowing the Gieroks to know the approximate location of their cows, particularly the dry cows while they are grazing.

The Gierokâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm, which was purchased in 1991, consists of 285 acres, 132 of which are tillable. They grow corn, oat and an alfalfa-grass mix for dry hay for winter feeding and supplementing the cows during the summer. No additional proteins are purchased for the feed.

Because of the terrain of the farm, the Gierokâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cows spend the majority of their time rotationally grazing the hillsides.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just about everything you see, we put here,â&#x20AC;? George said of their farmstead, as he readied the barn for the cows to come in for morning milking. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This dairy barn and the silo were here, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve built everything else. It was an opportunity for us.â&#x20AC;?

The morning before the breakfast started out normal for the Gieroks with the exception of the large tent located outside of their barn. The morning turned humid as George and Mary packed their two youngest children off to school for their last day of the school year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With school going so late this year, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m missing half my work force,â&#x20AC;? George said.

As they were ď&#x192;&#x17E;nishing up milking, the day began to take on a slightly different rhythm and pace than a typical day for the Gieroks.

The ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst of many delivery trucks that would arrive that day pulled into the yard.

First came a truck delivering portable toilets. Next, a trailer bringing a giant charcoal grill arrived followed by a roll-off truck bringing a dumpster. In the midst of all the special deliveries, the Gierokâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s milk truck arrived. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today was our regular day for milk pick up,â&#x20AC;? Mary said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That worked out nice that we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to have him come a day early.â&#x20AC;?

Volunteers began to arrive, and soon there were over 20 people from the Trempealeau County Dairy Promotion Committee on hand to help the Gieroks prepare to host over 1,300 guests the next day.

Several of the volunteers have served as breakfast hosts in

previous years and place value on the connection made with the public during a breakfast held on the farm.

Mary Dejno is a long-time volunteer for the Trempealeau County Dairy Breakfast, having been involved since the ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst breakfast in 1981. Her family also farms near Independence, Wis., and has hosted the event twice. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Giving non-farm people the experience of being on the farm is very important,â&#x20AC;? Dejno said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has always been important, but these days with all the misinformation about agriculture it is even more important.â&#x20AC;?

As people arrived to help, they began picking up brooms and sweeping the large machine shed where the breakfast would be prepared and served. Some set up tables and chairs in the tent.

More deliveries continued to arrive. A large ď&#x192;&#x;atbed was backed under the tent to provide a stage for the live entertainment. Several griddles were

delivered and positioned, ready to provide a hearty breakfast in a few short hours.

Despite all of the hustle and bustle interrupting the daily routine on their farm, George and Mary relished the opportunity to welcome the public to their farm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes, I should probably have been making hay this week with the nice weather,â&#x20AC;?

George said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But, it can grow a little more, and hopefully the weather will hold out for me this next week.â&#x20AC;?

Sharing the story of the dairy industry and their small family farm in particular is an important part of the Gierokâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motivation for hosting the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Too many people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where their food comes from,â&#x20AC;? Mary said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They think it comes from the grocery store.

Or, they have a bad perception of the industry. We want to show them our farm and how we work hard to supply a healthy product.â&#x20AC;?

Community members, media, elected ofcials, educators and farmers are invited to join the 2019 Water Matters Tours, June 25 and 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Fennimore and Eau Claire, Wis., respectively. The tours are made possible in partnership between Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), UW Discovery Farms®, Wisconsin Counties Association (WCA), and Wisconsin Towns Association (WTA). Holstein Association USA and Zoetis are inviting all dairy enthusiasts to the National Junior Genetics Conference to be held Wednesday, June 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Red Lion Hotel, Paper Valley, in Appleton, Wis., in conjunction with the 2019 National Holstein Convention and the National Genetics Conference.

The planning committee has an exciting schedule lined up for the Junior Genetics Conference.

It will include a hands-on approach to help youth of all ages dig into genetics, genomics, and reproduction.

Jerome Meyer, General Manager of East Central/Select Sires will serve as the host and emcee. He’ll kick off the session before dividing all attendees into three separate groups. Youth will rotate to attend all three of the following sessions in groups of similar-aged attendees.

Genomics 101, led by Nick Randle, Marketing Manager, U.S. Dairy Genetics at Zoetis and Kayla Langer, Claride Technician at Zoetis. Youth will get an inside peek at the whole process of genomic testing – from actually taking the sample, to how it’s processed, and what information a farm gets back afterward. That will include the production, health and conformation traits, along with a discussion on traits that many may not realize are tied only to genetics – like polled, A2, and coat color.

The 2019 Cattle Show for the West Central Dairy Days will be June 28 at the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds in Willmar and is sponsored by: the Kandiyohi ADA and Kandiyohi Holstein Association. The show will start at 10:30 a.m. and should be completed by 2:30 p.m. Breeds will be shown in the following order-Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Crossbreds, Guernsey, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn, Red and Whites and Holstein (8 breeds). Each breed will be followed by Breed Champion (top two from each class are eligible to compete). When all breeds are complete, the show will continue with Junior and Senior Champion (the judge will designate the Junior and Senior champion from each breed to come back for overall and reserve champion.

Cash prizes will be awarded to Senior and Reserve Senior Champion and Junior and Reserve Junior Champion The show will conclude with the Junior, Intermediate and Senior showmanship.

In response, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is offering Navigating Conict & Tough Conversations in Agriculture, a workshop designed to help agriculture professionals navigate potentially contentious situations. Workshop topics include reducing anxiety and fear about interpersonal conict; understanding how self-awareness and group dynamics contribute to successful outcomes; exploring the connection between conict and change; and precautions participants can take to keep themselves safe at work – both in and outside their ofce.

210 cows, 400 acres Everything has fallen into place. We planted 150 acres of corn in the last two weeks and finished planting corn June 12.

That was the field we had RAINFALL rye we harvested on this TOTALS year. We cut hay June Last 2 6-7 and harvested it June Weeks 7-8. We did 90 acres and put it in a 12x300 bag. We round baled the rest for balage. The alfalfa was better than expected. The second crop has greened up nicely. Our corn should be knee high by the week- Since April 14 end. The low spots in 11” corn and soybean fields that drowned out were replanted around here. The oatlage is about 10 days away.

When I was young my dad always talked about a million dollar rain, but the stretch of warm weather was worth more than a RAINFALL million to most. Lots TOTALS Last 2 of crops have gotten Weeks in, including hay.

Unfortunately, it turned cool and wet again. Our hay crop is really nice and I have all my milk 1.7” cow hay made and I am working on the Timothy and brome. Since April 14 With the cool weather 6.5” they are just right for cutting and look great. Corn in our area is looking good. All the crops need some warmth.

All of the corn is planted and we are working on hay, but we only get about two days at a time to do RAINFALL TOTALS it. The hay looks very Last 2 good. It is some of the Weeks thickest hay I’ve ever had for first crop. The alfalfa is blossoming, but is way behind 1.8” what it should be normally. The first hay we’ve put up is Since April 14 looking pretty good.

I can’t believe I’m saying it, but we could actually use a bit of rain. All of our crops are in and everything is sprayed. We planted corn, switched to beans and RAINFALL TOTALS then sprayed, doing it all Last 2 non-stop. We got all of that done in a 24-hour period.

Weeks I don’t think I’ve ever ran that hard, that fast to get it all in. We cut 50 acres of hay yesterday (6/17), and certain grasses were hardly there and others were really thick and heavy. There is no alfalfa; it is about 60% Since April 14 clover. The Timothy looks 12” amazing. We are chopping today (6/18), and plan to chop about 30 acres and bale about 20 acres. The corn sprouted up in about five days.

It is raining here again this morning (6/19). Saturday night (6/15) we had 2 inches of rain at the dairy, but on the far ends of RAINFALL fields we had about 4 TOTALS inches. The corn is all Last 2 in and is all emerged, Weeks although there is some of it I wish was still in the bag. You can see every bit of compaction in the soil. The second crop is growing nicely, and will probably be ready to go in about 10 days. The Since April 14 15.8” oats are almost ready and will probably be ready to go about the same time as the second crop.

We’ve got the dairy hay for the cows made, we are just waiting on the grass. The yield has been good, but it has been lower quality than you would like to see. The second crop is starting to look good though. The Since April 14 11.8” corn actually looks really good considering the weather this spring. The late planted corn is catching up to the earlier planted corn, and the oats and beans look good, too.

3 bags (9 ounces each) blue corn tortilla chips, divided 2 blocks (8 ounces each) monterey jack cheese 1 cup quartered grape tomatoes 1 large sweet red bell pepper, chopped (1 cup)

Prep time: 45 mintues. 18-20 servings. Beat the cream cheese, salsa, sour cream, colby and green onions in a large bowl until blended. Spread colby mixture into the bottom of a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Measure 1 cup crushed tortilla chips; set aside the remaining chips for serving. Arrange the crushed tortilla chips in a rectangle on top of colby mixture, about 5 x 4-inches.

Cut 1 block (8 ounces) monterey jack in half into two blocks, each about 1/2-inch thick. Cut slices with a 1 1/2-inch star cookie cutter, using the handle of a small spoon to press and release cheese from cutter at star points.

Place stars on chips. Shred 2 cups (8 ounces) from the remaining monterey jack. Combine tomatoes and red bell pepper in a medium bowl. For stripes, arrange tomato mixture and shredded monterey jack in alternating rows, each about 1-inch. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until serving.

Serve with the reserved tortilla chips.

Salt and pepper to taste 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (6 ounces each) 12 ounces (about 14 cups) fresh baby spinach and kale salad mix 4 ounces Sartori Merlot BellaVitanoÂŽ cheese, crumbled

Prep time: 30 minutes. 4 servings. Place the 1/2 cup blackberries, basil, balsamic vinegar and honey in a food processor. Cover and process until mixture is smooth; slowly stream in olive oil until blended. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour 3/4 cup vinaigrette in a sealable plastic bag. Add chicken; seal bag and turn to coat. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Cover and refrigerate remaining vinaigrette until serving. Grease grill grate. Heat grill to medium. Grill chicken, covered, over medium heat for 5-7 minutes per side or until a thermometer inserted in chicken reads 165°F. Transfer chicken to a cutting board; keep warm. Divide salad mix onto four serving plates.

Cut chicken into slices. Top salads with chicken and remaining blackberries.

Drizzle with reserved vinaigrette. Sprinkle with Merlot BellaVitanoÂŽ.
