Wisconsin Jersey breeders receive national recognition Krejci, Demmer continue to check off the bucket list By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

ELLSWORTH, Wis. – In their relatively short careers as Jersey breeders, Kevin Krejci and Lisa Demmer have already checked off a number of items that make up the dreams and bucket lists of many long-time breeders. The pair has already claimed important show banners, and this spring, they were honored by the American Jersey Cattle Association with the Young Jersey Breeder Award for their accomplishments in breeding and developing their herd. Kevin and Lisa rst met at a Jersey show in 2004. Lisa had grown up on her family’s registered Holstein farm, and Kevin had grown up helping every day at his grandparent’s dairy farm. Eventually they teamed up to form Discovery Genetics, the prex that has come to be one regularly announced on showring loudspeakers. In their 16-year career of breeding registered Jerseys, they have twice exhibited the

cow that walked out of the showring wearing roses after the AJCA’s prestigious National Jersey Jug Futurity. One of those two cows, Discoverys Tequila Jewelene EX-96, went on to be named the National Champion at the AJCA All-American Show three years later.

For several years, the couple juggled working full-time jobs in the Twin Cities metro area with trying to spend as much time with their cattle, which were housed at Lisa’s family’s dairy farm in Ellendale, Minnesota, nearly 90 miles away. The commuting, in addition

to their herd growth, led Kevin and Lisa to purchase a small farm near Ellsworth, where they built a modern tiestall barn with several box stalls to suit their needs. “We were up to about 65 head,” Kevin said. “It was time to either sell a bunch or do this.”

The herd was moved in 2018 after construction on the barn was completed. They are now milking 35 cows while still continuing to work full time off the farm. “We chose this location because it is close to the metro area where we work, and we were able to procure a milk market,” Lisa said. “That was just really becoming a big concern when we rst started looking.” The farm they purchased included 20 acres. They rent an additional 40 acres, hoping to be able to produce all of their own hay for the year. “If we can make all of our own hay, that will save us at least 25%, if not more, on our feed costs for the year,” said Kevin, noting they purchase dry corn and corn silage off the eld from neighbors. “We have really tried to take an active approach and sharpen our pencils to gure out ways to cut costs without cutting corners.” Kevin and Lisa chose to make the move so they could better work to develop their herd of cows to continue working toward their goals. While their sire selection focus is primarily on type, they do not turn a blind eye to production traits. Turn to JERSEY | Page 3

Discoverys Tequila Jewelene captures the coveted roses for breeders and owners Kevin Krejci and Lisa Demmer at the 2014 National Jersey Jug Futurity.

“We want to breed a balanced cow from head to tail, Kevin said. “One that walks on a good set of feet and legs, and we’re really focusing on udders and rumps. Lisa said they want to breed functional cows as well. “We don’t breed straight out for production, but the cows that might not have a lot of milk behind them, we are trying to breed some more milk into them, Lisa said. “They have to milk to pay their way too. They incorporate bulls that are plus for milk while not losing sight of their type standards. They are also conscientious of health traits, particularly daughter pregnancy rate. “We actually even look at DPR on the sires of our recipients for embryo transfer, Kevin said. “If it is a negative DPR, we probably won’t use her as a recip. It’s another one of those cost saving measures that we are trying to take, and I

think it has kind of paid off.â€? Bulls in their breeding program include Guimo Joel, River Valley Joyride, Colton Flame Fireman, Steinhauers Iatola Applejack, River Valley Cece Chrome, as well as two of their own bulls, Discoverys Premier Joey and Discoverys Premier Jedi. One of Kevin and Lisa’s best-known cow families is descended from Lisa’s ďƒžrst Jersey calf, Thomsen 4226 Cadillac Jay EX-95. Jay had a successful showring career for Lisa, winning a class four times at the Minnesota State Fair and being named reserve grand champion of the show in 2009. Jay had 15 daughters. ate champion banner at the 2014 World Dairy Expo after winning both the junior 3-year-old class and the overall championship in the International Futurity. Jewelene has walked on World Dairy Expo’s colored shavings eight of her nine years, and has placed in the top 10 all eight years. Another standout cow family Kevin and Lisa have been working to develop descends from Bridon Vindication Evelyn-ET EX-92, who was the result of Kevin’s rst purchase of Jersey embryos. One of her daughters, Discoverys Tequila Escape-ET EX-95, captured the 2016 National Jersey Jug banner for the couple, their second win in three years. Although Kevin and Lisa have achieved goals that most registered Jersey breeders can only dream of accomplishing, they are not resting on their laurels but continue to have their eyes

set on breeding cows that can continue to compete at high levels. They realize that without the support of their families and friends, they could not have reaped the rewards they have in such short time. “We are really grateful for our families and friends,” Lisa said. “Without their support, over all the years and throughout the building project, none of this would have been possible.” Kevin agreed. He said they were humbled by the recognition they received from their peers in the Wisconsin Jersey Breeders Association, to be nominated for the AJCA Young Jersey Breeder Award. “Just having your fellow Jersey breeders think you are worthy of nominating for the award is quite a feeling,” Kevin said. “But to actually be selected, that is really special.”

So, your farm has COVID-19?

MDA advises farmers what to do during pandemic By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

The novel coronavirus has immersed itself in communities across the nation, and the agriculture community is no exception. With the pandemic impacting the workforce of meat packing and processing plants, the Minnesota Department of Health has partnered with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota Board of Animal Health and Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry to provide resources and guidance for farmers. “We’re doing what we can to limit transmission in the workplace from person to person contact,” said Lisa Wetzel, training and outreach coordinator for dairy and meat inspection with MDA. MDA hosted a webinar, “MDA Dairy Farm COVID-19 Preparedness Resources,” May 29. The purpose of the event was to provide dairy farmers with resources and tactics to use if and when employees on their farm are infected with COVID-19. When a dairy farm is identied with three or more COVID-19 cases, a call is immediately set up with MDA to provide resources for the farmer and employees to limit the exposure of the virus as quickly as possible. The call might include the farm

owner and manager, an MDA inspector for the farm and supervisor, outreach veterinarian and outreach staff. Conversations also may bring in regional epidemiologists to provide local resources, like hand sanitizers, COVID-19 tests and other needs for the health and safety on the farm. “We’re here to provide guidance based on what we learn,” Wetzel said. “How is milking setup? What are the tasks of the employees? How do they interact?” The call will work through the daily operations of the farm and also ask about employee housing arrangements all in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. Those who test positive should remain at home, in their bedroom and use a separate bathroom if possible until three criteria are met: three days since a fever is present without the use of fever-reducing medication, 10 days following the onset of symptoms and symptoms are improving. The incubation of the disease is two to 10 days, with most symptoms showing up on day four, and the worst of the virus passing between days seven and nine. However, MDH recommends that anyone in the household of a COVID-19 positive case stay home and quarantine for 14 days. “Farms are part of critical infrastructure, so any employee that has not tested positive but has been in contact with a positive case can continue working,” Wetzel said. “MDH recommends those individuals self-quarantine for 10 days, if possible, but so as not to disrupt the operations of the farm.” Once a case has been identied,

people who worked with that individual are given priority for testing because of dairy farm’s critical role in producing food. Wetzel recommended implementing a protocol for tracking COVID-19 on the farm. “Have a discussion with employees about all of this,” she said. “It’s important for workers to know they won’t face negative consequences if they get ill. This is not the time to tell employees to buck up and deal with it. This is a time to be more cautious about illness than ever before.” Implementing protocols before COVID-19 is detected Addressing COVID-19 in the workplace is not an issue any farm wants to face as the priority on farms remains being able to care for the animals. To mitigate the risk of losing employees’ help during this time, MDH recommends putting strict safety and health guidelines in place. “It’s good to have a backup plan for if and when this will happen on your farm,” Wetzel said. “We understand cows need to be milked. This is why it’s a concern from the get-go.” The rst step farmers can do is to provide a system for screening all farm workers before their shifts begin. MDA has a checklist online that can be downloaded and used to evaluate if an employee is showing symptoms. The questionnaire should be simple yes or no questions and include a temperature check. If any question is answered with yes or a temperature is recorded above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, that individual should be tested for

COVID-19. “Employees should be advised to go home and stay away from people and contact their health care provider,” Wetzel said. Within the farm, work shifts should be staggered so the same individuals are working together and limiting interaction with others, 6-foot distances should be marked in gathering areas such as ofces and break rooms, and farmers should consider removing unnecessary doors or barriers that people might come in contact with daily. It is also important to emphasize personal hygiene with all farm workers. “Post hand washing instructions in languages spoken by employees,” Wetzel said. “Put them in the milking parlor, at the entrance of the facility. Make sure you have an ample supply of soap and single-use towels.” High trafc areas should also be disinfected regularly at every shift change. Wetzel also encouraged farmers to provide hand sanitizer and wipes in ofces, feed rooms and tractor cabs. MDH also strongly suggests farms have policies for anyone visiting the farm, such as a feed truck driver, veterinarian or delivery person. All these tactics will help dairy farms remain operational throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “If employees make up a majority of the workforce, … we want farms to set themselves up to not run into that situation,” said Wetzel about COVID-19 cases overwhelming farm staff. “We understand the severity and complexity of this.”

Managing agricultural PPE needs when supplies are short Personal protective equipment, or PPE, is necessary to protect farmers and other agricultural workers from pesticides, grain dust, mold, and other hazards. The COVID-19 global pandemic, however, has stressed the supplies of PPE since the emergency needs of our medical care providers and rst responders must be met. The following are some considerations if you are a farmer, applicator, or other agricultural professional facing a shortage of PPE.

What level of PPE do you need? For pesticide applications, a long-sleeve shirt, long pants, shoes and socks are typically the minimum required PPE when mixing, loading, and applying a product. Protective eye-wear including goggles or a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, additional clothing such as a chemical resistant apron or coveralls, and/or a respirator may also be listed on the label. Always check the pesticide label for specic PPE requirements – the label lists what is required to lawfully use a particular product and restrictions exist for personal health and safety. Note, the label will list the minimum level of PPE required, you can always wear a higher level of protection. Respirators: What are my options? Respirators are one of the PPE items most likely to be in short supply at this time. They can be required for numerous agricultural activities, including when working with grain, livestock, hay, manure pits, silos, and certain pesticides. The following resources summarize the types of respirators needed for various activities: – Agriculture Respirator Selection Guide: http:// umash.umn.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/respirator-options-guide-8x11-june-2017.pdf. – Respirator Worksheet: http://umash.umn. edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Website-August2018-Respirator-Worksheet.pdf With current demand being extremely high for N95 masks, masks that provide a higher ltering capacity (e.g. N99 or N100) may be easier to nd, even if they might be more expensive. A half-mask respirator with a cartridge or a full-face respirator are options to consider as well and they may be easier to nd since they are less likely to be used in the medical eld. These can last a long time, but may be more uncomfortable, more costly, and require more parts than a mask. Check for availability through your local farm supply store or online options such as (but not limited to) Gemplers, Grainger, PK Safety, Northern Safety & Industrial and Amazon. Ensure all respiratory protection is marked NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) approved with the ltering capacity it provides. Respirator t testing When a tight t is required when wearing a respirator, a t test is needed to ensure you are getting the proper protection. For more information on t testing and sites that offer this service to farmers in MN, see Respirator t testing resources in Minnesota: https:// blog-crop-news.extension.umn.edu/2018/05/wherecan-i-get-t-tested-to-wear.html. What if I can’t nd the level of PPE that I need? If you can’t nd the level of PPE that’s required for your planned activity, consider selecting an alternative product or method. Is there a less toxic product you can use, for example, that requires a lower level of PPE? Product label databases such as CDMS.net, agrian.com, or greenbook.net can help you search pesticide labels for PPE requirements. Another possible option is to hire someone who has the proper PPE to do the needed task. Do not skimp on PPE if you cannot nd what is needed for a particular activity – your health and safety depends on it. Consistency key to improving reproduction Kenealys nearly double heifer pregnancy rate By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

CADOTT, Wis. – Hitting certain benchmarks make up many of the goals dairy farmers strive for. For Jeff and Trista Kenealy, making great strides in improving the reproductive efciencies in their heifers is something they have been working hard at. The Kenealys, along with their children, Delton, 9, and Timothy, 7, milk about 500 cows at Kenealy Dairy Farm near Cadott. Jeff is the fourth generation to operate the farm, and his father, John, is also a partner in the family’s dairy operation. All of their replacement heifers are raised on-site. They farm 1,600 acres of corn and alfalfa, all of which are used to feed their herd. In the 20 years since Jeff rst joined his dad on the farm, the herd has grown upwards from 100 cows. While the Kenealys have always had luck with the reproductive performance of their milking cows, with a group pregnancy rate consistently over 30%, they have struggled with getting heifers bred in a timely manner. Recently, the Kenealys have been celebrating successes at improving the statistics in their heifer program, reaching a pregnancy rate of over 40% on their heifers, up from 22% a year ago. “Consistency and diligence have really made the difference for us,” said Jeff, of the protocol changes they have made on the farm. “The technician we are working with now is great walking and chalking our heifer groups, and catching them in heat off their Prostaglandin F2-alpha shots. It’s sad to say, but he knows my heifers better than I do.”

The Kenealy family – (from le) Trista, Timothy, Delton and Jeff – milk 500 Holsteins at Kenealy Dairy Farm in Cado, Wisconsin. The Kenealys have experienced success improving their herd’s reproducve performance. When heifers reach 395 days of age, they are given their rst shot of PGF-2alpha, followed by a second shot two weeks later. Any heifers that remain open after their rst service are set up on a second round of shots. “I do all of the repro shots myself,” Jeff said. “Shot compliance is key. I feel like doing it myself keeps it on schedule, and if something doesn’t hap-

pen the way it should, I have no one to blame but myself.” In previous attempts to reach better conception rates for their heifers, the Kenealys used CIDRs on their heifers, but did not nd the success they were looking for. The Kenealys utilize a double ovsynch program for their reproductive program in their milking herd. Any

cows that remain open at a pregnancy check are resynched either as normal or with a CIDR. They began using the double ovsynch protocol about two years ago and noticed great improvements in their success rate. While the Kenealys have achieved a 60% conception rate on rst service, Turn to KENEALYS | Page 10

“We decided to install freestalls from TJ’s Fencing after a friend recommended them. They were easy to install and the cows really like them. Jeff said. “But I don’t plan to quit using the double ovsynch program we are on. I like to be in the driver’s seat as far as getting the cows bred back.â€? Struggling with low reproductive statistics is a battle that can seem overwhelming at times, but Jeff willingly offered advice for others dealing with similar problems. “Don’t be scared to shake things up,â€? Jeff said. “Make changes, implement new protocols and keep trying until you ďƒžnd what works and start seeing improvements.â€?

KIDS CORNER: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Herzog never wavered from dairy farming By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

In June 2010, Dairy Star talked to the Herzog children for the Kids Corner feature. At the time, Matthew was 10 years old. We spoke with him for this issue about what he is up to on the farm 10 years later. FREEPORT, Minn. – By all accounts, Matthew Herzog is living out his dream of dairy farming. When he was a young child, he admired the work his parents did and wanted to emulate that in his own career. The thought of dairy farming was not realized only once when asked in a Dairy Star questionnaire, but twice more throughout his adolescent years. “In kindergarten, we had to write a letter to ourselves as seniors, and I wrote that I wanted to be a farmer,” Herzog said. “In seventh grade, we did the same thing. My senior year I opened it up, and the message was all the same. I wanted to farm.” Herzog, 20, has worked on his family’s farm full time for the past two years with his parents, Allen and Diane, and younger brother, Nick, in Stearns County near Freeport. He wakes every morning by 4:30 and milks the 60-cow herd on his family’s home farm site. Then, Herzog milks 40 cows at a neighboring farm site. The family has rented the neighbor’s farm site for 10 years. “I milk all those cows, and then we let them out. And, I bed the stalls,” Herzog said. “Mom lets the cows back in later on.” When Herzog is nished with mornTurn to HERZOG | Page 12

ConƟnued from HERZOG | Page 11 ing chores, he heads to his full-time job as a construction worker. “I work construction all year long, but if we’re doing hay or something I can take time off,” Herzog said. “Dad can’t afford to pay me full time, so it’s nice to get paid off the farm.” He works until about 4:30 p.m. and then returns home for evening chores. “That’s my day,” Herzog said. “Most people ask I how I do it. I don’t know, I’ve gotten used to it. Waking up early is hard some days, but I get in a routine.” Herzog has always liked working with the animals. Milking cows was his favorite chore when asked in the Kids Corner feature a decade ago. “I’ve liked milking cows since I couldn’t reach the pipeline,” Herzog said. “When I rst started milking at the neighbor’s, I had to look up to my mom. Now, she has to look up to me.” The young farmer said there is something unique about milking cows, trusting the large animals and they trusting him. “It’s a pretty calming way to begin and end the day,” said Herzog about being in the barn. Herzog joined the family farm after graduating from Upsala High School. One of his rst responsibilities was taking over the genetics program at the second farm site. He works with a breeding technician to choose the best bulls to improve the dairy herd. “Dad let me do it by myself and gure it out,” Herzog said. “I’m with the cows every day, so I know if one has a bad udder, if she’s hard to settle, all that stuff. With every breeding, I try to evolve the herd.” Herzog looks to use bulls that will create a well-balanced cow, specically looking at those with high udders and good teat placement. He also likes cows with good feet and legs and low pins. “It’s really fun once you see a cow milking and see where they’ve come from

and then compare that to the mother,” Herzog said. “Breeding with different bulls I can see what genetics ourish in the herd.” When Herzog is making breeding decisions, he thinks about the future of his herd and looks at what fellow dairy farmers are doing. “My neighbor has really good cows, and I’ve always looked up to him. He works hard for them,” Herzog said. “One day I want that, to have cows that look really good. It makes your job that much easier.” As Herzog continues working as an employee for his parents, he hopes one day he can dairy farm on his own. For the time being, he plans to continue working on the farm and lling his days with construction work. Then, he wants to build a larger facility that would accommodate the family’s entire milking herd. “I want to make that robot accessible so I can put robots in on down the road,” Herzog said. “I’ll milk cows as long as I can but when I can’t, I’ll have the barn set up for robots.” While working construction, Herzog has helped build many dairy barns and put in milking robots. “That’s really helped a lot,” Herzog said. “I see what works and what doesn’t work.” Over the last decade, Herzog’s drive to dairy farm has only become stronger as he has taken on more responsibility on his family’s farm and looks to build a future in the industry. And he is just as proud of the Herzog family’s livelihood as he was when he was a 10-year-old boy. “Everything we have is stuff we’ve worked toward. Everything here is everything we’ve done and worked up,” Herzog said. “We built our own legacy and it’s nice to see the fruits of our labor.” Mark Klaphake contributed to this article.

2020 World Brown Swiss Conference rescheduled to September 2021 With the COVID-19 situation continuing to evolve, we have made the difcult decision to postpone the 2020 World Brown Swiss Conference, originally scheduled for September 28 – October 3, Madison, WI. While we are extremely disappointed to make this announcement, we feel that it is our responsibility to follow the guidelines and recommendations of health authorities and governmental entities and do our part to ensure that our associates and partners stay safe and healthy. We are, however, very excited to announce the rescheduled dates for the World Brown Swiss Conference will be September 26 – 30, 2021, at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin, USA! The conference schedule will be similar to this year with a few modications. It will continue to give attendees the opportunity to exchange ideas and information with other breeders from 25+ different countries. Conference attendees will have the chance to experience the International Brown Swiss Show and World Premier Sale during the World Dairy Expo. This combination of elite Brown Swiss cattle and World Dairy Expo’s innovative, industry-leading trade show, will make for a very special event.

Today, the beautiful Brown Swiss cattle can be found across the globe. The world population of Brown Swiss is reported to be about 5 million, which ranks as one of the highest in world-wide population of dairy cattle. Brown Swiss yield large volumes of milk with high components, boasting an ideal fat-to-protein ratio for cheese-making. For this reason, most Brown Swiss producers receive more money per 100 pounds of milk than owners of other breeds. Dr. Keith Bolsen passes away The world lost a brilliant mind, a trusted friend, and a compassionate teacher when the Lord suddenly welcomed His servant, Dr. Keith Bolsen, to his heavenly home on Friday, May 29. Keith and his beloved wife Ruthie had just moved into their new Sprucewood, Texas home. Keith was a devout Christian and his faith has led him home. He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Bolsen; his daughter and son-inlaw, Krista L. and John Corkill; ve grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Drusilla Hollingsworth; and several cousins. He was the only son of Henry and Faye Bolsen, who preceded him in death along with his sister Marge. Professionally, Keith was known globally for his passion and expertise and has counseled countless farmers on how to make safer, better forages. Most people knew him as The Silageman™ and he probably had his hands on and evaluated more silage than anyone else since ‘ensilage’ was introduced into the Western Hemisphere in the 1870s. Keith was a Professor Emeritus of Cattle Nutrition in the Animal Sciences & Industry Department at Kansas State University in Manhattan. He was raised on his parent’s grain/livestock farm near the small town of Bement, Illinois. Keith received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1966 and 1967, and he received a Ph.D. in Cattle Nutrition from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 1971. Keith began a 32-year teaching and research career at Kansas State University in 1971, where he focused on the performance of growing cattle fed silage-based rations, agronomics of silage crops, silage fermentation, and additives, storage losses, and the application of a team approach to silage management. He taught two Principles of Livestock Feeding courses and a Silage Technology course, and he served as the major professor for 39 graduate students who earned 28 M.Sc. and 19 Ph.D. degrees at K-State. Keith conducted research on silage additives and the ensiling of tropical forages during Sabbatical leaves at the Grassland Research Institute in Hurley, England (1978), the Volcani Institute in Bet Dagan, Israel (1993), and the Dairy Training and Research Institute at the University of the Philippines at Los Banos (1994). Keith has lectured on silage technology in over 40 countries. Keith retired from K-State in June 2003.

Recently Keith and Ruthie founded the Keith Bolsen Silage Safety Foundation, and he embraced his mission to make everyone aware of how to work safely with silage, sending everyone home safe during harvest and while managing it. His tireless energy and perseverance in delivering this message is unrivaled. Ruthie and the Foundation Board of Directors will be developing a plan for the organization going forward in the next months. Please refer to the Foundation website, silagesafety.org, for further announcements. Ruthie and the family appreciate your prayers, concern, and love. In lieu of owers, food, and other gifts, please consider donating to the Keith Bolsen Silage Safety Foundation. Safety was truly Keith’s passion that he shared with Ruthie, and a contribution would be most appropriate and appreciated. The public is invited to participate in this free virtual event. SILO is the rst-ever feature lm about a grain entrapment. Inspired by true events, SILO tells the story of Cody Rose, an 18-year-old who falls victim to a grain entrapment incident in a small American farm town. As grain turns to quicksand, family, neighbors and rst responders must put aside their differences to rescue Cody from drowning in a crop that has sustained their community for generations. The screening of this lm has been made possible by a generous grant from Grinnell Mutual. Those interested in viewing the lm should visit the Eventbrite website at https://bit.ly/SILOvirtual to register. Participants will then receive an email with their link to watch the lm. Access to the virtual screening is limited to the rst 500 participants. DAIRY CALENDAR

“Raising the Bar on Passive Transfer” headlines the June 18 Dairy Calf and Heifer Association (DCHA) webinar. Scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Central time, Dave Cook, Milk Products technical services manager, and Adam Geiger, Zinpro Corporation research nutritionist – dairy & colostrum, will serve as the presenters. Feeding colostrum immediately after birth is not optional. Rather, it’s a requirement to ensure that calves receive the immunity provided by immunoglobulin G (IgG). Without it, both morbidity and mortality in calves can be high. In fact, many industry experts regard colostrum delivery as not just a performance issue but also an animal welfare issue. The goal is not just to feed colostrum but to consistently feed colostrum to achieve passive transfer of immunity. When a signicant quantity of antibodies is transferred from the colostrum-fed calves’ small intestine to the bloodstream, then successful passive transfer is achieved. During the webinar, Cook and Geiger will address maternal colostrum protocols that help achieve successful passive transfer. Key factors include quality, quantity, timeliness, cleanliness and consistency. In addition to maternal colostrum, the presenters will discuss colostrum replacers and supplements. Colostrum replacer differences include globulin, protein source and concentration per dose. Also, the process by which the colostrum replacer is processed can impact the product’s efcacy and feasibility of achieving successful passive transfer. To register for the webinar, go to: https://bit.ly/DCHAraisingbarwebinar and follow the prompts. As the webinar approaches, you will receive an e-mail with information on how to log in to participate. Holstein Association USA, Inc. will host a Virtual Member Update Meeting Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. It will feature the President’s Address, CEO’s State of the Association Address, and the 2019 Financial Report. Details on how to register for the webinar will be posted on www.holsteinusa.com. The virtual format comes as the traditional face-to-face Annual Meeting has been postponed until 2021, when the National Convention will be held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This decision was made by the board of directors because of the unprecedented conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic. CEO John Meyer states, “The current environment provides a unique opportunity to update the dairy community on the good things that are happening at the Holstein Association USA. We invite you to join us June 25.” Further updates on the Holstein Association Virtual Member Update Meeting on June 25 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time will be posted at www.holsteinusa.com. The 62nd annual meeting of National All-Jersey Inc., will be held virtually at 2 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, June 26. Members will elect a Director from District #5, receive reports of the ofcers and General Manager and consider any other business that may properly come before the meeting. Charlie Garrison, The Garrison Group LLC, Washington D.C., will be a featured speaker bringing members up-to-date on issues impacting the dairy industry. The 152nd annual meeting of the American Jersey Cattle Association will also be held virtually. The meeting will be on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at 11 a.m. (EDT). Members will elect a President and four Directors and consider any other business that may properly come before the meeting. Reports will be given by the President, Executive Secretary and Treasurer. Retiring directors will be honored and Leading Living Lifetime production achievements will be recognized. Instructions on how to log in to the virtual meetings will be available the second week of June on the USJersey website at www.USJersey.com. The 2020 election for AJCA and NAJ will be conducted electronically for the rst time in history. Active members of AJCA and NAJ received a ballot and letter in the mail the week of May 25 for paper mail-in ballots. If active members have an email on le with the AJCA, they received an email from USJerseyVote@USJersey.com May 27, with a link to the ballot to activate their proxy and cast their ballot electronically. If you have questions contact Sam Oswalt, Executive Assistant to the Executive Secretary at 614.322.4472. Online voting will open at 8 a.m. (EDT) on May 27, and close at noon (EDT) on Friday, June 26. Mail in ballots and proxies must be received in the USJersey ofce by Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

ConĆ&#x;nued from CALENDAR | Page 15 date will allow for the sale to be held in between the two business meetings. It will be broadcast on JerseyAuctionLive. For six decades, the National Heifer Sale has been the single largest contributor to the national youth development activities sponsored by the American Jersey Cattle Association. Since the sale’s inception in 1958, it has been standard for each consignor to donate 10% of each animal’s selling price to the youth programs. Last year’s sale added more than $36,000 to the National Jersey Youth Development Fund. Every summer, the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) organizes on-farm ďƒželd days to give farmers the chance to see how organic farming work and to get ideas they can use on their own farms. With concerns about COVID-19 this year, these organic ďƒželd days will take place online. Each virtual event will include background information (podcasts, videos, and more) posted in advance and a 90-minute live meeting with the farm hosts and other experts hosted on Zoom. Participants will need to register to join the Zoom meetings. See details and register at mosesorganic.org/organic-ďƒželd-days. – Do the Numbers: Organic Dairy, June 24, Bossie Cow Farmat Random Lake, Wis. Thelma Heidel-Baker and Ricky Baker have a small, diversiďƒžed organic dairy farm in the rolling hills of southeastern Wisconsin. They’ll share how they manage their grass-based operation, covering pasture management, conservation practices, pollinator habitat, and livestock health. For the Zoom meeting, they’ll be joined by Jon Winsten, an ag economist with Winrock International and The Pasture Project. He will talk about the economics of grazing and share ďƒžnancial case studies from Upper Midwest dairy farms—from conďƒžnement operations to pasture-based farms. – Do the Numbers: Organic Crop Transition, July 8, Jovaag Family Farm in Austin, Minn. Jon and Ruth Jovaag have been gradually transitioning their crop and livestock farm to organic since 2014, aiming to have their entire 400acre farm certiďƒžed organic by 2022. They’ll discuss their rotation for soil-building and weed control, the equipment they’ve needed to add, and the challenges they faced. Paul Dietmann from Compeer is the co-author of Turning Grain into Dough and Fearless Farm Finances. He will talk about how to crunch the numbers involved in the transition to organic row crops.
