“Most of our equipment is 40 to 50 years old. We can’t buy it anymore. When it breaks down, we usually have to have the parts specially made.” When the Mrotzes took ownership, they revamped their marketing. It went from

BuƩer from Hope Creamery is made using older technology and what owner, Victor Mrotz, calls old fashioned. Every week, Hope Creamery makes three batches of butter, each starting with 5,500 pounds of cream, which turns into 2,500 pounds of butter. The Twin Cities is the biggest market for the butter, especially as the butter has become popular in circles of people who consider themselves foodies; however, it is also sold in surrounding towns in Minnesota, including Owatonna, Mankato, Rochester, Austin and Albert Lea among others. It has even made an appearance in a few areas in Iowa. The marketing focus sticks to high-end grocery stores and food co-ops. “When I rst started, I was trying to get into any

place that would sell it. But then I thought it’s probably better to be in fewer places and make the butter more special,” Mrotz said. Butter making has been the focus of Hope Creamery for dozens of years before the Mrotzes took over ownership. The original building was constructed in the country outside of the small town, which is located just south of Owatonna. “When the train came through, they moved it to town and within a year or two they built this building,” Mrotz said. This includes the upstairs of the building, which is no longer used, but carries the history of all the meetings, dances and social gatherings it held during its time as a space people could rent. “I’m the butter guy. People like to come tell me their stories,” Mrotz said. “It’s amazing how many people in southeast Minnesota have had a relative who worked in a butter plant at some point or someone who tells me they’ve eaten Hope butter all their life. It’s always fun talking to people.”

But Mrotz cannot take all the credit, especially since he didn’t know how to make butter when he and Kellie bought the creamery 16 years ago. Head butter maker Gene Kruckberg has been in charge of making the product at the creamery since 1964, long before the Mrotzes were part of the picture. Other employees have also been an essential part of the process – Jay Logan, butter maker; Cody Blouin, truck loader and delivery routes; and others. Other than the fact that Mrotz wanted to try to generate another source of income aside from farming with his dad in his hometown of Ellendale, Minn., he wanted to take on this business to keep Hope and its butter alive.

The use of a vat pasteurizer (leŌ) and a barrel buƩer churn (right) are two aspects of the buƩer making process that make Hope Creamery buƩer unique. “I like history, and I like old things,” he said. “When I came here before we bought it and watched the butter being made, I thought someone needs to buy this just to save it.” Plus, it helped that Mrotz had experience in sales and packaging, and a good understanding of the Minneapolis metropolitan area after living there for nearly 20 years. He also has an agricul-

ture background, milking cows until the age of 8 and then crop farming with raising beef following. “I like making a product people are willing to spend a little extra money on … and I like working with people – either employees or customers – to answer their questions and explain what’s going on,” Mrotz said.

His love for talking to his customers helps him follow a few of their philosophies of not cutting corners and delivering a quality product at a quality price to make a reasonable prot. Most of all, Mrotz wants to keep Hope going. He said, “My job is to keep it running for the next generation.”

A countryside procession Reps family honors late father with annual tractor parade By Krista Kuzma

LEWISTON, Minn. – When Dean and Kristi Reps start up their tractors on June 25, they won’t be heading to the eld. Instead, the Lewiston, Minn., dairy farming couple will roll through town and then on the roads along the Winona County countryside with dozens of other tractors driven by family members and others in the community for The Gordy Vick Memorial Tractor Ride. The late Gordy Vick is Kristi’s dad. “It keeps his memory going and brings people together,” said Kristi, who milks 40 cows near Lewiston, Minn. The event, which has been in existence since 2009, always begins at 10 a.m., on the last Sunday in June during Heartland Days in Lewiston. It starts at the Lewiston sale barn, which Vick owned until

The Reps milk 40 cows on their dairy near Lewiston, Minn. he passed away on Dec. 23, 2008. His family still owns the barn today. Vick held a seat on the town’s city council, which lead to his involvement in Lewiston’s annual festival. In 2008, he had started planning a tractor ride for the following year. “It was his way to represent agriculture [in the town

festival],” Kristi said about why he was planning the tractor ride. “He was a big tractor guy.” Vick didn’t get the chance to see his plan come to fruition after passing away that December; however, his family decided to continue with the event in Vick’s memory. During the inaugural year, 86 tractors participated.

“The rst year was hard because we were missing my dad,” Kristi said. As each year passes, it gets a little easier to cope with the loss of Vick. Plus, it has become a fun event for their family and the community. Four generations of Thompsons have participated in the event since 2010. The oldest three generations –

Cliff Sr., Cliff Jr., and Mitch – each drive one of their New Holland tractors used on their 185-cow dairy near Lewiston, Minn. “All my kids have done it since they were little in car seats,” said Mitch Thompson, the third generation in the family. They wanted to be a part of the tractor ride to support Vick’s family. “He was a good guy. He looked out for the farmer and always tried to get you the best price for your animals. He supported a lot in the community,” said Cliff Jr. The event is also fun, said the Thompsons. “It’s nice to get the farmers together,” Cliff Jr., said. “Everybody’s in a good mood and the people know the route so we’ll see people out in the country sitting in their lawn chairs outside their house.” The ride, which takes about two hours, takes one of two routes around Lewiston each year. “It takes awhile for about 100 tractors to go by,” Dean said. One of Vick’s grandchildren take turns driving their grandpa’s Farmall H to lead the pack and start the parade, followed by Vicks’ family. Then, the participants follow. The ride ends at the Lewiston sale barn, where Vick’s family serves a free meal to round out the event. “The whole parking lot is packed. It’s fun walking around afterward and seeing the old tractors and the new ones and everything in between,” Dean said. Dairy farmers open their barn doors to celebrate There is no denying the joy that dairy can bring, through a delicious slice of cheddar on a burger at the family barbeque, a cold glass of milk or a giant scoop of ice cream. But when it comes to what dairy even is; where dairy comes from; or how dairy farmers care for their animals, the environment and the communities they live in, misinformation is everywhere, confusing consumers at every turn. In fact, according to a recent survey, nearly 50 percent of people think eggs are dairy and nearly half of Americans don’t know where chocolate milk comes from.[1] To spotlight the role dairy plays in peoples’ everyday lives and to bring consumers closer to where dairy comes from, the farmerfounded Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, in partnership with nearly 42,000 family farms, processors and dairy brands, is kicking off a month-long celebration of National Dairy Month. The events are part of the dairy community’s unprecedented campaign, “Undeniably DairyTM” – a multiyear effort to showcase all that is good about dairy, from the farm to the foods we love. Visit America’s dairy farms Throughout the month, hundreds of America’s dairy farmers, from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin to Colorado to California, will be “opening their barn doors” to reintroduce people to their local farms and the families who run them. Seven decades of continued growth Four Cubs Farm celebrating 140 years, hosting dairy breakfast By Brittany Olson

GRANTSBURG, Wis. – Even though Gary Peterson’s great-grandmother began homesteading in Burnett County in 1877, it was almost 60 years before the Peterson family farm had an ofcial name.

With a little help from Mother Nature, they found one that stuck. To this day, the Petersons’ 1,000-cow dairy near Grantsburg, Wis., is still known as Four Cubs Farm. “It was in 1934 when a mama bear and her four cubs BRITTANY OLSON/DAIRY STAR

came to a tree by our house for a couple of days, and people came from all over to see these bears,” said Gary, who farms with his wife, Cris, and son, Ben. “She came and went, but the four cubs stayed.” Gary said there has always been a dairy cow or two on the farm. “[Gary’s great-grandma’s] husband died, leaving her with the farm and 10 kids,” Cris said. “Then, she remarried a man from Stockholm, Sweden and had Gary’s grandfather at the age of 47 in 1895.”

After building the original barn that same year, the farm steadily grew through the next seven decades with adoption of the newest and best technologies available at the time to its current herd size and 2,150 owned and rented acres. “In 1997 we went from 45 cows to 100, and then to 200 in 1998. We were switching cows out of the old barn,” Cris said. A double-10 parabone parlor was installed in the original barn in 1998, also. Two years later, the herd doubled to 400 cows, then increased to 500

cows in 2003. “We went to 700 cows in 2007, and built our new parlor in 2011. We then built two new pens in the freestall [barn] and grew into them,” Cris said. The Petersons along with their herd manager, Nathan Brandt, and 12 cowside employees are milking 825 cows in their double-16 parallel parlor. cleaned every milking while cows go through the holding area into the parlor. “We milk three times a day, and it takes about six hours to milk each shift,” Brandt said. Milk production and quality are focal points at Four Cubs with a rolling herd average of 29,500 pounds per year with 4.1 percent fat and a 3.3 percent protein. The herd at Four Cubs consists of largely Holsteins with a few crossbreds, and sires are selected for moderate size and stature. A pregnancy rate of 31 percent is also a source of pride for the herd, as well. “We’ve found that moderately sized cows are more efcient for us than big cows,” Brandt said. “We also get a little worried if our fat gets under 4 percent. Processors don’t want water.” Their latest achievement is a somatic cell count that has consistently been under 150,000 for several months. “We pulled chronic cows out of the [milking string] to feed calves, and we aren’t making new chronic cows,” Brandt said. “Our calf manager, Tiffany Peterson, has 120 calves on milk right now.” Milking protocols are simple yet effective. Teats are coated with a chlorine-based foam predip after the sand is wiped off, then three strips of milk are taken from each quarter before attaching the milker. Brandt said efciency has been their driving force, all the way down to employee movement in the pit of the parlor. “During milking, we have two employees in the parlor. With 16 stalls on each side, we have a 5-6-5 pattern for them to follow so they aren’t running into each other,” Brandt said. While cows are being moved to the parlor, one employee takes care of processing fresh cows, feeding colostrum and cleaning each respective pen after the cattle have been moved to their holding area. “It’s a lot of work, but they get it done,” Brandt said. “No time is wasted.” Turn to FOUR CUBS FARM | Page 13

Having a good crew of employees, particularly during the last couple of years, has been instrumental to the successes achieved at Four Cubs. Approximately a dozen employees are devoted to cowside care, with six employees working in the shop who can x just about anything, along with assisting in eld work and hauling manure. “We’re fortunate to have the labor force we do. We treat everyone with respect and make them feel important,” Brandt said. On top of trying to reach their dairy’s goals in terms of employee and cow performance, the Peterson family also devotes a great deal of time to advocating for agriculture. For example, Cris is a published author, and has written 11 children’s

books about agriculture. Right now, she is currently working on a book about the reaper and how it revolutionized agriculture. This year also marks the second in a row that Four Cubs Farm has hosted the Siren Community Ag Association dairy breakfast, which will be held June 17. “It’s just so much fun,” Brandt said. “It’s a great opportunity to debunk myths and show people the truth about agriculture.” After hosting two dairy breakfasts two years in a row, keeping a family legacy alive for 140 years and publishing 11 books, there’s no telling how much Four Cubs Farm will continue to grow or strive to achieve in the future.

Rick and Carol Brumm raised their ve children on their dairy and now farm in partnership with two of their sons, Steve and Dean. said about using the parlor to milk the herd of 60 Holsteins with a few Brown Swiss. “It was an investment. A pipeline would have been buying time for a parlor.” Carol liked the change, too. “We were getting beat up by the cows every day [in the stanchion barn],” she said. Plus, the parlor made it easier on family life. There was more room and it was safer for the kids to be in the parlor while Carol and Rick milked. “I could take my kids where ever I went,” Carol said. As the children grew, so did their interest in dairying. Steve earned a degree in farm management at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa, and returned to the farm in 1990. Dean followed closely behind, making his return to the farm in 1991 after studying dairy herd management at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Iowa. “After being away, there’s nothing like being back home on the farm,” Dean said. Along with loving the job, Dean said family drew him home. “When my grandpa was alive it was nice being around him. He would still be out here trying to help,” Dean said. As the number of family mem-

bers on the farm increased, so did the herd and the need to expand. In 1999, the Brumms built their main freestall barn. In 2013, they replaced their rst parlor with a newly built double-12 parallel parlor and another freestall barn. “We were making steps along the way instead of building all at once. We didn’t over extend ourselves,” Steve said. Two years ago, they built a new transition barn that is split in half – one side is a sand bedded freestall area and the other is a bedded pack. This barn is used for cows who are three weeks prior to calving until three weeks after calving. The Brumms said the new transition barn has made a big difference in their cow health and improved cow comfort for that time period. A calf pasteurizer they purchased one year ago has also improved calf health, and makes it easy for the fourth generation to do chores. “The health of the calves is so much better because everything is more consistent,” Dean said. During the many years they have been farming, the Brumm family said they have learned valuable lessons and built character. “A good work ethic gets you a long way in life,” Dean said. Rick agreed. “That’s what farming is about. Working on the farm is as much play for us as it is work,” he said. “It runs in the family.” Along with their work is their involvement in youth organizations such as 4-H and FFA. Like each of the family members before them, the youngest generation of Brumms is active in showing cows and is involved in learning about and promoting agriculture in each respective organization. Chelsea and Isabelle promote dairy through the county’s Little Miss Squirt program, as well. Carol admits they have had challenges that accompany the fun. “There are a lot of hard times along the way. It wasn’t always easy. We were always tied down,” she said.

A current challenge is the price of milk compared to the input costs. “We limit spending and spend money we do have on what will make us the biggest return,” Steve said about how they navigate through volatile price periods. Despite these tough times, the Brumms try to look at the big picture and one of the reasons why they farm. Dean explained it while gesturing to his children, and nieces and nephews. “The best part is watching these guys help,” he said. With at least two of them interested in the farm, Brumm Dairy’s future looks bright and hopes to continue with family.

GILMAN, Minn. – With school out for the year, many kids are looking forward to a carefree summer, but not Breyden Bemboom. The 10-year-old from Gilman, Minn., will spend his summer days practicing archery, with his sites on a grand prize – receiving top honors at the National Archery in School Program (NASP) world tournament. On July 21-22, Breyden will travel with his family to the prestigious competition in Orlando, Fla. “I’m really looking forward to the

trip. It will be like a vacation,” said Breyden, who is the son of Shawn and Jennifer Bemboom. Breyden helps his family milk 80 cows on their farm in Benton County. Over the last year, the young athlete was a member of the Foley Falcons Archery fourth grade team. After surpassing his competition at regionals and state, Breyden traveled to Louisville, Ky., May 11-13, for the national tournament. Breyden completed the tournament with a nal score of 281 – 300 is a perfect score – and 16 tens, commonly referred to as bullseyes. Of the 2,321 elementary students JENNIFER COYNE/DAIRY STAR

competing at the national tournament, Breyden nished the event in 25th place; fth out of 827 fourth grade students; and 638 out of the 7,730 middle and high school-aged boys who participated. “I was pretty happy with how I did,” Breyden said. “Last year, I got a score of 271 and this year I did 10 points better. My goal is to get 285 at world – 290 would be a lot better.” Douglas Foss, Breyden’s grandfather, agreed. “The chances of making it this far are really second to none,” he said. “We’re proud of him.”

Breyden rst dabbled in archery three years ago, and has been mentored by Foss ever since. “His mom and I wanted Breyden to take on a sport that he could use the rest of his life,” Shawn said. “Maybe he’ll play other sports as he gets older, but this will be a lifelong thing.” Archery was a sport Breyden was familiar with, having been raised bow hunting alongside Foss. “Shooting was a sport option I knew I could do,” Breyden said. “I’ve been Turn to BEMBOOM | Page 19

Breyden Bemboom is aƩending a world archery tournament in July – a trip he earned by receiving a near-perfect score of 281 out of 300 at naƟonals. bow hunting with Grandpa since I was really little.” Once Breyden enrolled in the school team, it did not take him long to develop a passion and talent for archery. “When he rst started shooting, I bet $15 he couldn’t get a bullseye at 10 and 15 meters – one round cost me $75,” said Foss, laughing. “Then I said if he got a score over 280, I would buy him an overunder shot gun. Breyden easily shot that in Kentucky.” Every competition begins with ve arrows, one being used for a practice shot. Then, four rounds are shot at 10 meters, followed by another practice round and four rounds at 15 meters. At the national tournament, lining up with 240 other children from across the nation, Breyden shot his rst rounds at 48, 50 and 49 – out of 50 possible points. “It’s just unreal. I could tell by the way he was shooting that his score was going to be high,” Foss said. “But I always tell Breyden he has to go out there and have a good time; that helps take the pressure off.” In preparation for Breyden’s next competition, he will spend even more time practicing with his grandfather and less time doing chores on his family’s dairy farm. Typically, Breyden is responsible for helping feed cows and milking, and keeping the barn clean. “Farming comes second; rst, it’s hunting and shing and archery,” Shawn said. Every week, Breyden practices several times at his home and also at school with his teammates. Coaches Cody and Amy Rife, as well as several other volunteers, help each student develop in the sport. “We shoot a lot of balloons, and I always hit the bullseye,” Breyden said. At home, Foss has taught Breyden how to aim his arrow up with the target, without using a site. Breyden now knows how to look down the line of the arrow and shoot at the intended target. However, perhaps most importantly, Breyden has learned patience from his grandfather. “I’ve always shown Breyden that most of archery is patience,” Foss said. “You have to practice and you’re going to get blisters from practicing so much, but you become better and there’s proof

With the world tournament on the horizon, the Bembooms have spent time reecting on Breyden’s career on the archery team and pondering what his future will hold, recognizing his success has been largely driven by family. “We’re so proud of Breyden, but he would have none of that if it weren’t for Doug,” said Ron Bemboom, Breyden’s other grandfather. Foss humbly agreed. “For us, this is a family thing,” he said. “We all are involved, helping him and cheering him on at competitions. Breyden has a very good support group.” Noticeably improving with each competition, it’s clear the 10-year-old is just tapping into his potential as an archer. What’s next for Breyden? It seems the sky is the limit for this sharp shooter.

A splash of color in a black and white world Dobmeier paints mural on family’s grainery By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

ST. ANNA, Minn. – Amidst a sea of black and white, autumn colors embellish a tall-standing grainery at the Dobmeiers’ home, catching the eyes of all who visit. Anna Dobmeier created the mural on her family’s 30-cow dairy near St. Anna, Minn., in Stearns County. “The grainery stands right outside our house, and Mom has never liked the dull-looking sides. She wanted some color in her life,” said Dobmeier, the daughter of Duane and Agnes Dobmeier. Encompassing the entire height of the north wall on the 30-foot tall grainery and nearly the entire width, Dobmeier’s mural is framed in a barn-red border and sky-blue background. Blocks of fall colors – orange, brown, yellow and green – are speckled throughout the mural, with two large brown leaves prominently positioned at the top and bottom of the display. “I was going for a fall harvest theme – showing the colors we see during harvest,” Dobmeier said. The intricate design mimics

a quilt pattern Dobmeier created two years ago. “That winter, I was laid up with hip surgery and started sketching ideas that I wanted for a quilt,” said the 17-year-old. Dobmeier’s interest in quilts and their elaborate patterns dates back to attending a local church festival, where many handstitched quilts were displayed. “I’ve always thought quilts were cool and so different,” Dobmeier said. “Someday, I’d like to create something like that, especially with fabric scraps.” For now, Dobmeier showcases her talents through brush strokes rather than stitches. As Dobmeier recovered from surgery, her older brother, Clayton, primed the entire building. Soon after, during the summer of 2015, Dobmeier began working on her rst piece of art. Colors of autumn were chosen and then Dobmeier penciled the design across her large canvas, working within 5- by 5-inch squares at a time. The mural was painted square by square with a small detailing paintbrush – just large enough for it to be difcult when adding detail to the painting. “I began at the bottom and worked my way up along the right side of the painting until I couldn’t anymore on my own,”

The following summer, Dobmeier used a ladder to reach the highest points and worked her way back down the left side of the painting. “That was the scariest part,” Dobmeier said. “I’m not a fan of heights and there’s always a few

wasp nests you have to look out for, but I had to get it done.” As she reached the middle of the painting, Dobmeier took advice from her younger sister to intertwine the blocks with stripes rather than blending the colors, as was the original plan depicted in the drawing.

“Besides painting fences on our property, I had never painted before,” Dobmeier said. “I didn’t know how much work it would be to make sure the painted blocks looked how they were supposed to.” In between school classes

and farm chores, Dobmeier completed her mural by the end of the 2016 summer. “You pay so much attention to each block that it’s shocking to look at the whole thing,” said Dobmeier, blushing as she recalls nishing the mural. A year later, the painting remains a colorful, decorative accent to her family’s dairy, and an inspiration as Dobmeier completes another mural on the south wall of the grainery. The newest project depicts Looney Tunes characters placed amongst patterned squares that Dobmeier found in quilts. “Dad loves Looney Tunes and I love quilts, so I’m mixing them,” Dobmeier said. To date, Tom and Jerry, Pepé Le Pew and Road Runner are staples on the grainery. Dobmeier hopes to have the front mural completed by July 9 – in time for her high school graduation party – with characters, such as Popeye, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn and Porky Pig highlighted. “In between farm stuff, I’ll draw out the characters and patterns and then start painting them,” Dobmeier said. “It’s a lot

of work, but it’s something I nd relaxing after I’m done milking.” With inspiration and support from her parents, Dobmeier hopes to dedicate one mural to them and their dairy farming career. “Dad wants a farming mural of how it used to be,” Dobmeier said. Nestled within Dobmeier’s doodling folder is a sketch of a farmer hand-milking a Jersey cow; the outlines are clear, but, for now, the drawing lacks color. Dobmeier needs to nish coloring the drawing with accents that bring out the dark brown and black features of the Jersey, before she begins her next work of art. Once ready for completion, the mural will be placed between two windows of her family’s tiestall barn. But the painting projects will not stop there. “I want to have a wall on the grainery of random farming sayings that my family knows, like, ‘Chickens in the rain, it’s going to rain all day,’” Dobmeier said. “I’m excited where this will take me, because painting is an art that I can do forever.”

Child agricultural injury prevention leader named ‘outstanding researcher’ by National Rural Health Association The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) has selected childhood agricultural injury prevention leader Barbara Lee, Ph.D., as the recipient of its 2017 Outstanding Researcher Award. Dr. Lee is director of the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety, and interim director of the National Farm Medicine Center, both part of Marsheld Clinic Research Institute in Marsheld, Wis. Lee and other major award winners were honored May 11 at the NRHA annual conference in San Diego. Although she could not be present, Lee used her acceptance video to thank NRHA for highlighting childhood agricultural health and safety efforts. She said she was accepting the award on behalf of her researchers and staff, past and present. Nominating Lee were Brent Miller, director of federal government relations, Marsheld Clinic Health System; and Bryan Weichelt, Ph.D., project scientist, National Farm Medicine Center. Lee’s experience as an early-career nurse in a rural hospital sparked her passion for agricultural health and safety. She directed development of an action plan, leading to the National Childhood Agricultural Injury Prevention Initiative, implemented in 1996 by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Lee also chaired major efforts establishing voluntary standards for children’s work in agriculture, and for protecting non-working children. Since 1997, she has directed the NIOSH-funded National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. During that time, the rate of childhood farm-related, non-fatal injuries has declined by nearly 70 percent, an accomplishment described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the top ten public health successes of the last decade. FARM Animal Care Program seeks producer feedback on resources, tools The National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program, in collaboration with Colorado State University, is conducting a dairy farmer survey to learn more about perceptions of the FARM Program and how it can continue to improve the resources it offers producers. The voluntary survey will probe producers’ knowledge of the program and the value they think it provides to their operations. The study will help FARM Animal Care better provide cooperatives and farmers with the appropriate guidance and materials required of FARM Program participants. Survey questions address topics such as the producer’s familiarity with the program, where they seek additional FARM Program information, and why stewardship practices, as assessed by FARM, are important to them. Those interested in taking the survey can do so by clicking here. “Participants in the FARM Program produce more than 98 percent of the U.S. milk supply by volume, so it’s important that we understand producers’ thoughts on how FARM can further positively impact their businesses,” said Emily Meredith, chief of staff for NMPF, which launched the program in 2009. “Just like dairy farms are on a path of continuous improvement, the FARM Program wants to continuously improve how we work with our participants.” The information gleaned from this survey will help advance the FARM Program by increasing its efciency and impact for farmers. Improving the FARM Program will also assist the dairy industry in forming uniform objectives on animal welfare, and assist FARM Program staff in understanding and catering to producers’ needs, Meredith said. The study, titled “Dairy Producer Perceptions of the National Dairy FARM Program” is being led by Dr. Noa Román-Muñiz and Kayla Calvin from Colorado State University’s Department of Animal Sciences. The survey is condential and only summarized data will be shared with the primary researchers, so participants cannot be identied directly. FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative to pay equity patronage FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative Board of Directors have authorized return of scal year 2016 patronage equity to its members. “As dairy farmers ourselves, we understand what it means to receive this patronage check. The cooperative is looking out for its members, and authorizing disbursement of these patronage funds is one of the ways we are showing that appreciation for our members,” says John Rettler, president of the FarmFirst board of directors. In addition to members active in the cooperative in 2016, Family Dairies USA members will also receive a portion of their equity that remains from their existing equity program prior to the merger. “The equity from Family Dairies USA members prior to 2013 was set aside in each member’s name. We will continue to award that equity as we move into the future when available, beginning with this patronage check for equity from 2010,” says Rettler. To receive patronage, cooperative members will need to conrm their current tax information via completion of a Form W-9, “Request for Tax Payer Identication and Certication” prior to July 1, 2017. The board designated the minimum amount to be $10, and patronage checks will be sent out in August 2017.

Recent changes in the cost to dispose livestock mortalities has led to an increased interest in composting of mortalities as a management strategy. The Composting Livestock Mortalities program will provide information for best practices for successful composting of animal mortalities (cattle and swine), economic and legal considerations for mortality composting on-farm in Wisconsin. Area livestock farmers and ag professionals are welcome to attend Wednesday, June 28 from 1-3 p.m. at the farm site N9235 North Branch Road, Hixton WI. The program location includes on-site composting facility and demonstration. Successful livestock mortality composting can save farmers money in rendering fees if done correctly. Steve Okonek, Trempealeau County UW-Extension agent will discuss best practices, including the composting process, materials and methods, common problems and solutions. In addition to basic legal considerations for CAFO and nonCAFO sized farms interested in composting mortalities, Gretchen Wheat of the Wisconsin DNR will discuss recommended options for composting facilities, the advantages of a hard work surface, push walls & roof, versus composting on bare ground with something such as hay bales stacked around the perimeter. THE NEXT GENERATION OF DNA TESTING Biogenetic Services, Inc. is offering a new DNA biomarker technology test(beyond SNPâ€™s) that determines whether certain high milk regional biomarkers are present, as well as the expression of the biomarkers in individual heifer calves, pre-lactation heifers, ďŹ rst lactation heifers or adult (two or more calves) milking cows.

The Penn State Research Foundation has noted that â€œâ€Śthis technology is very important for the milk producers because there is a need in the art for a method capable of identifying milk producing animals (ungulates) with high performance that cannot otherwise be identiďŹ ed with current genetic and genotyping methods alone. Thus, there is a need in the art for a method capable of identifying dairy cows and other dairy producing livestock with high milk, fat and protein that cannot otherwise be identiďŹ ed with genetics alone. This technology addresses this unmet need for increased milk production. To initiate a biomarker test(s), a blood sample is collected by the milk producer and mailed to Biogenetics for analysis. A report of the results is provided for each shipment of samples in a format that is easy to understand and to use. The results also are entered into a proprietary dairy or farm database maintained by Biogenetic Services, Inc. This test provides a great opportunity for dairy producers to signiďŹ cantly increase milk production of their dairy cows and thereby to increase proďŹ ts from their dairies.

Some of the uses and benefits of this biomarker technology follow:

â€˘ Determine whether epigenetic regional markers (biomarkers) are expressing in an individual heifer calf or prelactation heifer. â€˘ Identify calves without strong expression of the particular informative biomarkers so that these calves can be culled. â€˘ Save feed, labor and veterinary costs by culling calves. â€˘ Identify natural epigenetic variations over time that signal(or predict) declining milk productivity in an individual cow (such cows may be ready to cull). â€˘ Increase milk production by selecting high yield potential cows and thereby increase the overall milk production of a dairy. â€˘ Save feed, labor and veterinary costs by timely culling of expected (or predicted) low milk producing cows.
