Vermont farmer builds running career

Professional athlete keeps dairy top of mind

Yet, through all her success, Purrier St. Pierre is reminded of her humble beginnings as the daughter of

“There are so many things about growing up on a farm that made me who I am today, completely,” Purrier St. Pierre said. “(Dairy) has had such a huge inuence on my life.”

Purrier St. Pierre is a professional runner for Team New Balance Boston based in Boston, Massachusetts.

When the Olympic hopeful is not training, she is active on her in-laws’ dairy farm near Berkshire, and her family’s farm near Montgomery where they raise heifers.

The 26-year-old has made dairy a staple in her life – whether that is through regular consumption of products,

promotion of the industry or helping her family when home.

“Dairy is very much a part of my life. I couldn’t get rid of it if I wanted to,” Purrier St. Pierre said. “It’s a huge resource and tool for athletes who are training at a high level with those important nutrients, like carbs and protein, packed into a glass of milk.”

After every training run or competition, Purrier St. Pierre recovers with chocolate milk. She and her teammates go through gallons of milk in a matter of days.

Purrier St. Pierre began her professional running career after graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 2018. In a short time, the athlete has made a name for herself as her list of accomplishments becomes greater with each season.

“2019 was a pretty breakthrough year for me,” Purrier St. Pierre said.

Two years ago, Purrier St. Pierre qualied for a spot on Team USA at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, with a third-place nish in the women’s 5,000 meter. She went on to place 11th in the global competition.

In 2020, she broke the American indoor mile with a time of 4 minutes, 16.85 seconds. That record was previously set 37 years ago by Mary Decker (4:20.5).

Most recently, Purrier St. Pierre shattered the American record in the women’s 2 miles with a time of 9:10.28, more than eight seconds faster than the previous record set in 2015. This accomplishment ranks Purrier St. Pierre No. 3 on the world all-time list.

“I know a lot of my success probably comes from the work ethic I developed growing up,” Purrier St. Pierre said.

“It translates so well. I had to get the job done. No dairy farmer doesn’t know how to work.”

Along with work ethic came responsibility, which Purrier St. Pierre was familiar with as one of the main caretakers for animals on her family’s farm.

“It didn’t matter if it was Christmas or I wanted to go out with friends, my parents relied on me and my siblings to get the job done,” she said. “Understanding that concept has really helped with my career.”

Purrier St. Pierre also admitted she was always physically active, working in the barn every day with her parents and siblings.

“I think that gave me a baseline level of strength as a young person,” said Purrier St. Pierre who often helped milk the herd.

Her running career began in high

school when she began the sport as an after-school activity.

“I found out I was pretty good at it,” Purrier St. Pierre said. “So, I got a scholarship to go to college. Then, my junior year, I came to the realization I could do this beyond college and started to spark interest with agents and coaches in the professional world.”

Now, with a growing following on Instagram (@elleruns_4_her_life) and in the running scene, Purrier St. Pierre brings her fans back to her roots. She is often found talking about the dairy industry as the fth-generation on her family’s farm.

“It’s fun to tell my story and educate people,” Purrier St. Pierre said. “The gap is growing between consumers and producers, and I feel I take any opportunity in a conversation to talk about farm practices. I genuinely enjoy it.”

Throughout Purrier St. Pierre’s childhood, her family milked anywhere between 40 and 130 cows on their farm.

In December 2020, her family sold the milking herd, and her dad now focuses on raising heifers. He also works at Purrier St. Pierre’s in-laws’ dairy, a short distance away.

As Purrier St. Pierre develops her running career, her husband and high school sweetheart, Jamie, is in the process of taking over the farm from his parents. Both are pursuing their passions, something Purrier St. Pierre encouraged all young people to do.

“It’s important to nd balance in life by working hard when you need to but also enjoying what you do,” she said. “If you’re in a career you really love, that’s so important and special.”

For now, Purrier St. Pierre loves running. But just as her dairy farming upbringing brought her here, she sees herself returning to that familiarity.

“Running is not going to be a career forever, that’s inevitable,” Purrier St. Pierre said. “I see myself more full time on the farm at home, and that makes me really excited. My husband and I have dreamed of that for a long time.”

Fancy that

Northeast Iowa cow expecting 13th calf for Bushman family

WAUKON, Iowa – In a world where advancing genetics makes it tempting to replace older cows with younger ones, Zack and Rachael Bushman have no problem keeping a certain cow around.

The Holstein named Fancy, part of their organic dairy herd near Waukon, turned 15 years old in October 2020.

She is conrmed pregnant with her 13th calf.

But the Bushmans do not have any special claim to raising or choosing Fancy. She came with the herd they bought from John Palmer ve years ago. Fancy was one of 50 cows and 50 heifers the couple purchased with the 11-acre Palmer farmstead and dairy facilities. Today, the Bushmans milk 85 cows.

Other than being the oldest cow in the herd, Fancy does not single herself out.

“She doesn’t need a whole lot of at-

tention,” Zack said. “She starts out her lactation OK then peaks early.”

She has had plenty of calves, but unfortunately, most were bulls. One daughter stayed in the herd until she was 8 or 9 years old, said Zack.

This time around, Fancy was bred to an Angus bull after several attempts to get her settled.

She was born the same year the Bushmans’ freestall barn was built by the Palmers. Zack believes the modern housing, with sand bedding, is easier on the cows’ feet and legs, helping Fancy and her herd mates last longer as productive cows.

The herd was organic when the Bushmans purchased it. It is Rachael who has been keeping up the organic paperwork since their marriage in April 2016, when Zack was 19. Now, they have three children: Sophia, 3, Briella, 2, and Joanna, 1.

When they began dairying the November after marrying, they bought their feed and did all the work themselves, milking twice a day for the rst three weeks. Then they switched to three times daily.

“We needed to make ends meet,” Rachael said.

They continue to milk three times daily now.

“The calves do better being fed three times a day,” Rachael said.

Zack said the tank average went up 10-12 pounds per cow when the cows are milked on the 3X schedule.

Dairy farming was not new to Zack when he and Rachael began farming.

His father and two brothers – Chuck, Isaac and Fritz – have an organic dairy near Castalia 25 miles away.

Zack and Rachael met through church activities.

Today, the Bushman herd is milked in a swing-10 parabone parlor and re-

ceives a total mixed ration. Cows use 50-60 acres of rented pasture through the growing season, and the Bushmans also rent the crop land of the original Palmer farm. Top cows are bred to sexed semen.

Two young neighbors help on the farm.

As for Fancy, even though she is not the family’s best producer, she is likely to continue her work on the farm.

“I think I’ll just keep her around awhile,” Zack said. “Just to see how she does.”

DATCP reminds farmers to check runoff risk prior to spreading manure The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is reminding farmers to check the Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast this spring before spreading manure on their elds. Spreading manure when there is a high risk of runoff can send manure into streams and threaten water quality.

“A good Nutrient Management Plan and SnapMaps can help you determine where to spread and the proper application rate. The Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast is a decision tool to help you determine when it’s safe to spread. Assessing current eld conditions is just one step in the process farmers should use to make decisions,” said Mark Witecha, Soil and Watershed Management Section Manager for DATCP. The Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast can be found at http://www. manureadvisorysystem.wi.gov/runoffrisk/index. The forecast includes maps showing short-term runoff risk for daily eld application planning. The maps take into account soil saturation and temperature, weather forecast, snow and crop cover, and slope. The National Weather Service updates the forecast three times daily.

Additional nutrient management planning resources, including the 2021 virtual nutrient management training for farmers, is available from DATCP at https://datcp. wi.gov/Pages/Programs_Services/NutrientManagement.aspx.

Alternatives to spreading manure Farmers should contact their crop consultant, county land conservation ofce, or the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for help identifying alternatives to high-risk spreading. If farmers must spread manure, crop consultants and county conservationists can help identify elds where the risk is lower. A directory of county conservation ofces is available on the Wisconsin Land + Water website at http://wisconsinlandwater.org.

Reporting manure spills All agriculture and livestock operations must report spills or runoff affecting water to the DNR’s 24-hour emergency spills hotline at (800) 943-0003. More information about preventing and planning for manure spills is available on the DNR’s website at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/agbusiness/manurespills.html.

Cover Crop Coach: Soil health must be made Modern management and diversity are the keys to farmers’ success with cover crops, an expert on the subject says.

Steve Groff, an author and entrepreneur known as the Cover Crop Coach, says using these methods and maintaining an open yet determined mindset can help farmers thrive in their conservation efforts.

“It’s your management that is going to make the difference of whether or not you’ll achieve soil health,” Groff said. “You can’t buy soil health; it has to be made.”

Groff works with farmers, agronomists, seed specialists and educators to help them recognize how important it is to cover the soil, plan and understand to be successful on the farm, ask questions such as why and how and then pair those answers with practical instruction, and treat cover crops like cash crops.

“We must mimic nature,” he said during Lafayette Ag Stewardship Alliance’s annual meeting in February. “Diversity is found in nature, and we as farmers need to start challenging ourselves to be more diverse in our operations. That’s what will make biological things happen.

Groff began utilizing cover crops in 1982 when he planted cereal rye. Now he grows multiple cover and cash crops.

His goals: – Lowering pesticide and fertilizer use – Avoiding commodity crops when possible – Working toward increased nutrient density and quality – Finding ways to be protable – Always maintaining diversity “My soil is changing and it’s great to see that,” he said. “The organic matter has increased. It’s measurable and that’s because of management.”

In the commercialized world of agriculture today, one primary source of farmer education comes from retailers whose products are generally geared to control part of nature and boost prots.

“The fear of losing yields is a powerful marketing tool in agriculture,” he said.

“Nobody is selling soil health.”

He advised farmers to think about and understand what they are trying to accomplish. Some potential goals are less erosion, more organic matter, more resiliency during extreme weather and marketing advantages. Think about soil health in the format of a 10-year plan, he said.

“You will not get instant results from the things I’m talking about today,” Groff said. “There are no shortcuts, so take time to understand the system.”

Admitting to the challenges of growing cover crops can also help with success, he said. Challenges farmers face could include the cost of seed and establishment of the crops, the need for and cost of specialized equipment to plant and manage the crops, and the lack of knowledge, research and experience.

“To be successful, learn all you can and understand where the future may be going,” he said. “Technology and biology are the foundation of agriculture progress for the 21st century.”

Wisconsin Farm Technology Days 2021 is on The Executive Committee of Wisconsin Farm Technology Days 2021 Eau Claire County conrmed today that the show will go on with key COVID-19 safety protocols in place, July 20-22 at Huntsinger Farms, the largest grower and processor of Horseradish in the United States and the World. Executive Committee Chair Mike Gintner, Vice Chair Mark Hagedorn, and Host Farm Manager Ken Traaseth were on hand on Monday, April 5 as the rst trailer was placed on the show grounds.

Tickets for the show will go on sale by June. Local hotels are booking rooms at special rates now.

Attendee anticipation for the show is high across the region, and the Committee is planning for strong attendance.

More than 350 exhibitors from across the Midwest and Canada have already committed to the 2021 show. Innovation Square will feature an incredibly diverse array of area farms including Huntsinger Farms, Superior Fresh, the largest aquaponics grower of greens and salmon in the US, Chippewa Valley Bean the world’s premiere kidney bean grower and processor and its home farm, Doane Farm, award-winning Marieke Gouda cheese company and its home Penterman Dairy Farm, and Ferguson’s Orchards, one of the largest apple growers and agritourism businesses in the Midwest.

The Committee has been in close communication with Eau Claire County ofcials to ensure that the show operates safely and has the appropriate safety protocols in place. Final details will be decided by the end of June.

Companies are invited to reserve their spots for the July 2021 show on the website. Available spaces appear in blue. DAIRY CALENDAR Join Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) for its next webinar on May 13, starting at 2 p.m. Central time. Ricardo Chebel, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine associate professor, will address “Using digital technology to optimize health and reproductive management.” The one-hour webinar is free.

The 2021 Minnesota Dairy Health Conference will be presented online between May 6 and July 8. The conference is planned for veterinarians, industry professionals and consultants, and leading dairy producers. The registration is $55 per four-hour session or $187 when registering for all four afternoons. Registration will include follow-up electronic access to each speaker’s materials and recorded presentation. Continuing education credits are available for veterinarians who attend.

The individual sessions will cover managing transition cows to optimize health and performance (May 27); making better mastitis control decisions and using less antibiotics (June 17); and adopting a systems approach to vaccination protocols (July 8).

The University of Minnesota Extension and Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association are cosponsoring the session.

Pre-registration is required. You will not be able to access the Zoom meeting room without rst pre-registering and receiving the secure Zoom link and passcode from Extension staff. The two-hour training and certication session is free. Only one person from each operation is required to be certied to ensure the entire operation follows the BQA standards. However, everyone who handles and manages fed cattle is encouraged to become BQA certied. Certication is good for three years.

During this webinar, Gerald Mechor, a distinguished technical consultant at Elanco Animal Health, will discuss the importance of a thorough examination and diagnostic testing to help conrm a positive case of coccidiosis, as well as prevention tips to keep calves healthy during this critical growth stage.

Coccidiosis remains a common disease pathogen present on all dairies with the potential to signicantly impact calves and heifers.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy team will continue its quarterly dairy goat webinar focusing on “Disbudding Management” June 2, from noon to 1:15 p.m.

Over the last several years, the Iowa State University Dairy Goat Welfare team has performed a series of kid disbudding project to evaluate alternate approaches to traditional heat disbudding and pain mitigation approaches. During this webinar, Paul Plummer and Jan Shearer, both professors with the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will provide an overview of those research outcomes framed up in practical approaches that producers can consider implementing in their disbudding and pain mitigation program. Natalie Urie, veterinary epidemiologist with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Veterinary Services National Animal Health Monitoring System, will review the 2019 NAHMS Goat Study, highlighting kidding and disbudding management on U.S. goat operations.

The third-annual “Curd Fest” planning is well underway at Jer-Lindy Farms and Redhead Creamery. “Curd Fest” celebrates the beloved cheese curd, with live music, food, drink and fun for all ages. The 2021 Gopher Dairy Camp, hosted by the Gopher Dairy Club in cooperation with the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Project Committee and the Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association, will be held virtually on June 21-22.

Gopher Dairy camp is a fun two day workshop for teens who want to improve their dairy cattle knowledge and showing skills. The camp is open to all youth who have completed grades 6-9, but have not yet started 10th grade.

This year’s camp will include fun workshops such as a follow along recipe with Princess Kay of the Milky Way, a tting and grooming demonstration, a craft project, and more.

We gured it out together, and now she teaches me; she’s the expert. In a little different setting, she was one of ve youth on a panel at a Connect conference we attended in Colorado, and it was a proud Dad moment.

What qualities does your daughter have that benet the farm? She’s smart, that’s No. 1. She has a go-getter attitude. She also sees things other than what her job requires and has a general knowledge of several aspects of the farm. She has the ability to talk to a Ph.D. in nutrition or a veterinarian just as well as the guys milking the cows.

That’s rare in high school kids. And, she has the ability to come to work on time and not take sick days.

nies. I am the reproductive manager and am a general hired hand where I might do anything from scrubbing waterers to taking temps or giving shots. When I work depends on what’s going on. I generally work after school and on weekends. But in the summer, I’m out here in the morning and all day, doing the work or managing my show cows.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I started before I was 10, running lists, but I was milking at 12. The farm, in my experience, was always Grandma and Grandpa’s farm, and my grandpa was amazing to me. He started with ve cows, and this is where we are now.

When Grandpa passed, I started thinking, “I’m doing agriculture,” and now I would rather be here than anywhere else.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores?

I’m in varsity soccer, Interact Club, Student Ambassadors, student council, National Honor Society and 4-H, and I’m student body vice president and vice president of the drama department. I decide what’s important in the long run.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? In every way. My family are the people who are out here.

They make the worst days seem fun. It’s a great environment. And there are the other farms around here, too. They al-

What do you love most about farm life? The way it connects me with these people and these animals. There is so much emotion and so many memories in these barns. For instance, I had my rst show heifer here, and over time that became her babies and grandbabies.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your dad?

You have to be able to go with the ow.

I greatly admire my dad for his cool, calm, collected attitude when times are hectic. He rolls with the punches. I’m getting better at it, and at seeing a problem and thinking of a solution.

What are your future plans? I want to go to Iowa State University, probably in animal science, but maybe agricultural business. I’ve been able to job shadow a lot of people, including a nutritionist.

Dad says not to limit yourself, so I’m waiting for that spark of inspiration. I might want to be a veterinarian and maybe come back to the farm.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have 100 cows and a few goats. I would milk them in a herringbone parlor like we have. They would be in a freestall barn like ours. I would also have horses with dogs and cats. The calves would have a calf barn. I would have Allis Chalmers and Case IH tractors.

What is your favorite dairy treat? Vanilla ice cream.

What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? Basketball, and I also like jumping on the trampoline.

What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I like feeding the lambs because they need feed. I do not like forking up hay because the hay scratches me.

What is your favorite animal on your farm?

The cow, Princess Alexis. She is 4 years old and is mostly white with a few black spots.

She is nice and friendly, and she has been shown at the fair in the past. Her name is Alexis, but we added Princess because she acts like a princess.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A milk truck hauler.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have 62 cows with a double-7 herringbone parlor. I would also have two computers to run it. I would have Allis Chalmers tractors and the red ones, along with domes for calves and a heifer shed where the other heifers can go. I would also have Kitty, our dog, there.

What is your favorite dairy treat? Milk and ice cream, but not from Dairy Queen. I do not like the ice cream there.

What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I like to jump on the trampoline and do ips, but I can’t land them yet.

What do you like to do while your older siblings are in school? I go to Napa with Dad for parts and the feed store to get feed.

Creating a culture of farm safety

In the spring, many producers are pretty busy.

They put in long hours in the tractor or bringing cows up from the barn to the milking parlor (often both).

The essential activities mentioned above inherently have risk. In this article, I will be discussing ways to build and maintain an on-farm culture of safety on dairies.

On the dairy I worked on, we held a farm meeting on Monday mornings after the rst milking and before chores. My employer always shared one safety tip at the very beginning of the meeting. Even though I was in my mid-20’s and indestructible, about a decade

later, I remember those discussions. I remember that they valued my safety and my future. That routine, 15-minute discussion demonstrated that safety was a priority to my boss on their farm and should be my priority as well.

One of the rst steps toward building a culture of farm safety is to recruit employees who value their own, your, and their co-worker’s safety. I encourage you to try to hire individuals who value safe decisions.

Emphasize how important safety is to you and your operation throughout the hiring process. A way you could do this is by asking questions about previous safety training as part of your stock interview questions and offer additional training throughout the year to reinforce mindful and safe decision-making.

Options that may be appropriate can include online or in-person, such as CPR, working around grain bins, or even low-stress livestock handling techniques. Maybe a pizza party or a summer BBQ can be the group’s goal to reward their hard work and encourage those quality employees to continue to stay on your team.

Employees tend to model behavior based upon onfarm culture and consequently their supervisor. Every interaction you have with your family and employees is an opportunity to model safe choices and reinforce your safety expectations as a priority during any task.

Setting an example will show everyone on your farm what the expectations are and prove that you are no exception to those expectations.

NMPF supports labeling integrity through DAIRY PRIDE Act The National Milk Producers Federation commended Representatives Peter Welch (D-VT) and Mike Simpson (R-ID) and Senators Tammy Baldwin (DWI) and James Risch (R-ID) today for reintroducing the DAIRY PRIDE Act, a bill that would bring clear, accurate labeling information for consumers and end harmful mislabeling of dairy foods by peddlers of plant-based products. The legislation requires the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to enforce its own existing standards of identity on imitation dairy products after decades of inaction.

The DAIRY PRIDE Act directs FDA to follow its own rules and establish an agency approach for enforcement of existing dairy standards of identity.

“NMPF thanks Representatives Welch and Simpson and Senators Baldwin and Risch for reintroducing the bipartisan DAIRY PRIDE Act in both the House and Senate, yet one more example of their ongoing leadership working to ensure FDA does its job,” said Jim Mulhern, NMPF president and CEO. “FDA is responsible for the integrity and safety of our nation’s food, medicine, and medical devices, and it’s crucial that it enforce its own standards and requirements. Without enforcement, we are left open to the potential for questionable products, deceptive practices, and, in cases such as mislabeled plantbased products that masquerade as having nutritional benets similar to dairy’s, negative effects to our health.”

by helping to ensure the integrity of their food. Standards also create a common understanding of what a food product is, helping consumers make informed choices.

FDA’s lack of enforcement of dairy standards of identity has led to consumer misunderstanding of the nutrients – or lack thereof – in imitation dairy products.

An IPSOS survey conducted in 2018, for example, found that 73% of consumers surveyed believe that almond-based beverages have as much or more protein per serving than milk. In reality, milk has up to eight times as much protein. A follow-up survey found that roughly 50 percent of consumers mistakenly believe that the main ingredient in a plant-based beverage is the plant itself. Such drinks are actually mostly avored water.

Medical groups including the American Academy of Pediatrics are voicing concerns over the harm this confusion is having on public health as misinformed consumers unintentionally choose less nutritious products for themselves and their families.

Congress has also shown a growing concern for FDA’s failure to enforce. In early 2020, the House held a hearing on the agency’s lack of enforcement. Then late last year Congress included in the report accompanying the FDA funding bill for FY 2021 a statement of concern and directive to FDA regarding enforcing dairy standards of identity.

“The reintroduction of the DAIRY PRIDE Act helps NMPF and consumers continue to move forward toward solving this critical public health and fairness issue,” Mulhern said.
