Two new ventures in three years Schwabs run a small gift shop business, robotic dairy farm

GIBBON, Minn. — Randy and Christina Schwab rely on technology in their daily lives, but in very different ways. While Randy uses it to keep track of two Lely robots and a herd of 125 Holsteins, Christina uses it to keep a handle on inventory in her new business.

The Gibbon, Minn., couple has undertaken two new ventures in the past few years. Af-

ter farming together for several years, Randy and his brother, Nathan, started construction on a new freestall barn with robots in 2014, milking in it for the rst time in 2015.

Christina, meanwhile, was looking to put her college degree to use as a business owner.

Things came together when a New Ulm, Minn., shopkeeper was looking to retire. She bought the business and reopened with a new name, stock and xtures in March.

“Owning my own business was something I’ve wanted to do since high school,” Christina said. “I went to college at Southwest State in Marshall, Minn., earning a business and ag business nance degree. I’ve worked in banking and insurance, but always looked to owning my own business.”

After taking part in the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce’s Smart Start Seminar a year ago in January, Schwab knew she wanted to keep going, so signed up to work with the Small Business Development Center in Mankato, Minn. She started looking for a building in downtown New Ulm where she could open a gift shop featuring eco-friendly and natural products. Unable to nd anything, she decided to launch an online business. That’s when fate stepped in.

She began working for the Lambrechts last fall, knowing she’d later purchase the business.

“It was nice to go through a holiday season to know how it goes,” she said.

She bought the business in February, right before the Lambrechts held a going-out-ofbusiness sale that cleared the merchandise. That gave Christina the chance to start with her own stock. She accompanied Curt Lambrecht to an eight-day market in Atlanta in January.

next Christmas season.

Christina’s rural inuence is evident in the store’s stock, as she carries Bonnie Mohr prints along with other farm décor. The inventory also includes women’s clothing and accessories, a oral department, an expanded children’s department with lots of farm items, home décor of all types, and wedding and graduation gifts.

The store has been renamed Inspired, as Christina hopes that’s what it does.

“I went to Lambrechts as a customer and was always inspired to do more decorating. On the eco-side, I hope to inspire people to be more thoughtful,” Christina said.

The store was closed for about six weeks before opening on March 24. During that time, a new oor, walls, counter top and display xtures were put in, and painting done. Christina called on Randy to help with various jobs, especially those requiring power tools. He recongured the front counter to make it more user-friendly and did other odds

Meanwhile, back at the farm, located south of Gibbon about 15 miles from New Ulm, Randy and Nathan milk 125 registered Holsteins in their new 116- by-216-foot barn. The barn

is self-contained, with room for dry cows and newborn calves.

After a week or so, the calves go to the old dairy barn on the adjoining farm site where Nathan lives. The brothers raise all their heifers and feed out bull calves.

Before moving into the new barn in 2015, Randy and Nathan

milked in the stall barn, switching out the whole barn. They enjoy the labor saving the robots provide.

Although there were unusual hours the rst few weeks with getting the cows adjusted to the Lely Astronaut robots, the brothers are pleased with the labor saving.

“Things get done in a more timely manner during hay baling and harvesting,” Randy said.

Christina said, “It’s much nicer not to have to stop harvest to go milk.”

The cows adapted well after the rst few weeks and production increased steadily, with a 100-pound average now.

Randy and Nathan provide most of the labor, with their dad, Bill, helping out quite a bit.

Although Christina is not involved with the milking, she has enjoyed helping with fall eld work and nds it relaxing.

“Her new business will cut down on her job of hauling round bales,” Randy said.

Christina said, “I’ll squeeze it in.”

Of her purchase of the business, Randy said, “It was a good opportunity for her, one she couldn’t pass up. It’s something she’s wanted to do for a long time. I’ll help as much as I can, but there are some things I can’t do.”

He said with a chuckle, “And some I’m better off not helping with.”

Randy and Christina have two children: Karli, 8, and Thayne, 5. They’re at the age where they like projects, both at the store and on the farm, and like to help out. They’re also at the age where they’re getting involved in activities.

“We’re constantly commuting back and forth, making sure the kids are in the right spot,” Randy said.

Christina said they can have more exibility because they are business owners.

And, with Nathan also involved in the dairy, one or the other of the brothers is usually around to take care of things.

Milking cows, making sweet treats Tetzners operate on-farm creamery

WASHBURN, Wis. – During the summer months, Lake Superior’s Chequamegon Bay is a hopping area as tourists visit the Apostle Islands a n d m a n y other attractions.

On their travels to and from their destinations, Pete Tetzner t h e y might stop in at Tetzner’s Dairy for a carton of ice cream or an ice cream sandwich.

Located just one mile from the shores of Lake Superior, Tetzner’s Dairy has been processing their own milk from their 60 Holstein cows since 1976.

In addition to selling ice cream products, they also market a third to half of their milk through their onfarm store and eight or nine other stores. A couple of coffee shops in the area use the

Tetzners’ milk in their drinks as well.

Pete Tetzner, along with his dad, Greg, uncle, Kevin, brother, Matt, aunt, Jackie, and grandpa, Phil, manage the farm and creamery.

“Our milk is sold in gas stations as well as grocery stores, butcher shops and a local food co-op. The rest is marketed through our coop,” Tetzner said. “We also repackage cheese from local cheese stores and cut it into smaller sizes, and carry local meat products, as well.”

The family has had a long history of farming and food processing. Tetzner’s greatgreat-grandfather and greatgrandfather bought the farm in the early part of the 20th century with intentions of raising meat animals for their butcher shop in Washburn.

“Somehow they just ended up with dairy cows,” Tetzner said.

The cows are housed in a free stall barn with a milking robot, which Kevin manages, and milk about 82 pounds per

“We focus on making high quality feed and not pushing grain,” Tetzner said.

“With a shorter growing season up here, taking off that rst crop of hay while it’s still young enough is a challenge with the wet weather we often get in early June.”

For a long time, the Tetzners had delivery routes for homes and businesses buying their raw milk directly from the farm until Wisconsin state law outlawed the sale of unpasteurized milk, thus encouraging them to purchase a pasteurizer.

“We bought our rst pas-

teurizer in 1976 and built our plant that year, too,” Tetzner said. “That’s when we began processing whole milk.”

For about 10 years, all they sold was whole milk.

found themselves in a position with more cream than they needed.

“That’s when we started making ice cream,” Tetzner said. “We make about nine different avors.”

In 2009, Tetzner’s Dairy began selling skim milk.

“Our ice cream sales keep increasing, but uid sales are still decreasing,” Tetzner said.

Greg pointed out that changing family demographics have been a factor.

“Years ago, when families were larger, we’d have people come and pick up 10 gallons of milk to get them through the week,” Greg said. “People just aren’t drinking as much milk anymore.”

“The ice cream sandwiches […] are the most labor intensive because of all the hand work involved.”

Five years later, in 2014, the Tetzners installed their milking robot to circumvent the hassle of hired labor.

“We love the robot,” Tetzner said. “We don’t like to hire help outside of the family much, except for our part-time employee in the plant who works here every other morning.”

Aside from the milk, which is packaged and sold in a pair of half-gallon bags, and the ice cream, the big cash cow at Tetzner’s Dairy would be their ice cream sandwiches.

“The ice cream sandwiches have the biggest prot margin, but they are also the most labor intensive because of all the hand work involved,” Tetzner said.

Cookies are placed in molds, which are then lled with ice cream using an ice cream hose. The molds are then set in a freezer and frozen at a frigid -30 degrees Fahrenheit for at least a whole day to form before being taken out and packaged.

“We have to use oven mitts to take the molds out of the freezer,” Tetzner said.

All told, everything sold through their dairy plant helps the Tetzner family farm’s bottom line.

With over four decades invested in processing their own milk, as well as the technological innovations they’ve implemented on their farm, the Tetzners hope to continue milking cows and making sweet treats for many years to come.

ALMA CENTER, Wis. – Wade Stubrud has always appreciated his upbringing.

Growing up on his farm near Alma Center, Wis., he saw his family grow the dairy from its humble beginnings to the herd of 102 cows he milks today.

These days, Stubrud, his ancée, Sonja Nolan, and their children – Elijah, 12, Ava, 7, Alise, 3, and Irelyn, 1 – are preparing to host the 36th annual Jackson County on-thefarm Dairy Breakfast at their farm, Stardome Farm LLC, June 3.

Stubrud is honored to host the breakfast and welcome the community to his farm.

“I’m excited to see people I haven’t seen in a while and to work with the great group

of Jackson County Dairy Promotion Committee members to put on this breakfast,” Stubrud said.

This year’s breakfast will be the second to be hosted on Stubrud’s home farm. The rst, held in 2001, was hosted by Stubrud’s parents, Janice and the late Claron “Gene” Stubrud. His parents purchased the farm on April 1, 1971 with 26 cows, sparking Stubrud’s love and interest in farming for years to come.

“I remember when I was just a kid, my dad would sit at the kitchen table with our employees, moving around plates

as barns and cups as silos, laying out his perfect farm,” Stubrud said. “Both he and my mom worked hard to have a simple farm, which has since made it easier to do what we do now.”

Stubrud’s father let his dreams ourish, adding onto the barn and growing the herd to 100 cows. Stubrud began to transition into ownership of the farm in September 2008 when he purchased the cattle and feed from his parents. He said his father warned him of the challenges ahead.

Stubrud is quick to attribute his success to the help of many individuals who are part of the farm.

“I am just one piece of this puzzle; there are a lot who deserve credit,” Stubrud said. “My parents set me up to get this far, but my ancée, family, employees and custom harvesters all help make it possible.

On this farm, it is always us or we, never I or me.”

Stubrud was approached several times to host the breakfast. He was interested, but after completing projects on the farm, this was the year it felt right.

“I wanted to put in rubber mats, a new roof on the barn and a new farm sign before hosting the breakfast again,” Stubrud said. “When I was approached last fall, I told the committee I would be proud and honored to host the breakfast.”

As he prepares for the June 3 event, Stubrud would like to dedicate the event to his parents for all their effort. Continuing the legacy his father set before him, Stubrud hopes he is making his father proud by reaching for his goals.

“I wish I could share the small successes of every day with him and to know I’m making him proud,” Stubrud said. “This breakfast, this day; this one’s for Dad.”

“My dad always said he didn’t want the farm to be a burden on my siblings – Ryan and Megan – or myself; what he saw as a burden, I saw as an opportunity,” Stubrud said. “After I told him taking on the farm was what I wanted to do, he did a complete switch and was completely supportive.”

Throughout the transition process, Stubrud said his dad continued to encourage his dreams. However, Gene was unable to see the transition to completion. On Dec. 16, 2010, Stubrud and his family were shocked when his father passed away due to a heart attack.

Suddenly, Stubrud’s life was altered and the man he had admired was no longer there to mentor him in his farming journey.

“As the saying goes, you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone; I miss him every day,” Stubrud said. “What I wouldn’t give for one of his big hugs just one more time.”

Despite losing his father, Stubrud completed the farm transition on April 1, 2011 – exactly 40 years after his parents initial purchase.

“Call it an April Fool’s Day purchase, but I gured if it worked for my parents, it might work for me, too,” Stubrud said.

In making his purchase, Stubrud set three goals for himself: improve production to 85 pounds-percow, produce 300 bushel per acre corn and to one day ll the bulk tank. While his goals are all works in progress, he continues to inch closer.

Last fall, he harvested 295 bushels per acre on corn and has a rolling herd average of 26,055. High quality feed grown and harvested on the farm’s 200 acres has made a large contribution to the farm’s growth.

A jack of all trades Suess juggles dairy farming, four off-farm jobs

GRAND MEADOW, Minn. – If Phil Suess is seen sitting down to take a break, it’s a rare moment. “If there is a minute to do something, I’ll do it,� Suess said. “I’m not real long on sitting.�

That’s why the dairyman ďƒžlls his schedule with more than the twice-daily milkings and the chores required to take care of his 60-cow herd on his dairy near Grand Meadow, Minn. Since Suess buys all his feed for his herd and doesn’t have land to farm, he ďƒžlls the rest of his time working as the co-manager of the Rock Dell Cooperative Creamery, custom hauling livestock, buying and selling Jersey cattle, and auctioneering. “I can get more done when I have too much to do than not enough,â€? Suess said. “I just love to work. I’m a jack of all trades and a master of none.â€?

Creamery, which recently celebrated its 126th annual meeting. Along with loyally selling his milk to the creamery, Suess served as the ďƒželd representative for three years in the 1980s and for the past two years has worked part time as the co-manager. Suess works the Thursday and Saturday shift while another part-time employee takes care of Monday through Wednesday and Friday. The co-op sells feed and small on-farm items such as shovels and pitchforks along with cheese, ice cream, butter and frozen food items. “I like visiting with the people who stop in and providing a service to those who need it,â€? Suess said. “I do it because I like it.â€?

Although the co-op had over 200 patrons in the 1970s, it hasn’t had its own processing facility for at least 15 years and now has eight patrons with ďƒžve board members. “We owe nothing and we make money,â€? Suess said about how the small co-op can continue running.

Custom hauling animals has also been a part of Suess’s schedule since the 1970s.

Phil Suess likes working with Jersey caƩle and has had the breed on his farm since he started dairying on his own in the 1970s. the custom hauling for the money. “ … but it gives me my play money. I invest in more cattle, so I buy more work,” Suess said.

Registered Jerseys are his cattle of choice, a breed he’s been working with since dairying on his own in 1978.

“I like the breed and had a few in the herd all the time growing up. I decided to milk Jerseys,” Suess said. “The Jersey cow is a docile and friendly animal.”

Suess also likes the efciency of the animal. When compared to a Holstein, a Jersey will produce less uid milk; however, Suess likes that a Jersey requires less feed and typically produces more butterfat and protein than Holsteins.

In addition to buying and selling his own cows, Suess markets them for other people, having made friends and contacts across the country.

“It’s just a hobby now,” he said. “I used to buy whole herds to sell.”

For the past 25 years, he’s also been selling items as an auctioneer through his brother’s auction company.

“We’ll sell anything – the Earth and everything on it – but we mostly sell machinery,” Suess said.

Many times, Suess would help his brother at auctions as a ringman; however, one evening, he jumped right into auctioneering without any previous experience or schooling. “[My brother], Mike, was auctioneering to beat the band. Then he called me up and said he had to go to the bath-

Suess admits sometimes his schedule can get hectic.

“Some days I have to be in a hell of a hurry,” he said.

But Suess wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It gives me that break from the everyday monotony,” Suess said. “I work better under pressure.”

Schmitt named new coordinator of Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dairy Center Mariah Schmitt, of Ft. Atkinson, has been named the new coordinator of Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dairy Center, located immediately south of the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Calmar campus.

In her new position as Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dairy Center coordinator, Schmitt is responsible for programming, public relations, marketing, membership, grant writing, tours and publications of the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation. Additionally, she will work closely with the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Directors to carry out the mission and objectives of Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dairy Center, as well as work concurrently with NICC, Iowa State University (ISU) - Extension and Outreach and Midwest Dairy Association in a unilateral effort to promote the dairy industry.

Schmitt earned a Bachelor of Science from ISU with a double major in Dairy Science and Agriculture & Society. Schmitt has completed internships at Midwest Dairy Association, Osborn Barr Communications and Land Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Lakes. At ISU, she was a member of the Dairy Science Club, Dairy Judging and Dairy Challenge teams and also served as the 2013-2014 Iowa Dairy Princess. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Growing up on my familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dairy farm, I developed a passion for the dairy community at a young age. I am excited to join the Dairy Foundation and share my passion with dairy farmers and students to help make the dairy industry stronger for future generations,â&#x20AC;? Schmitt said.

The new coordinator grew up on a family dairy farm outside of Fort Atkinson and milked 50 Holstein cows and several Guernseys. In her free time, Schmitt continues to work on the dairy farm alongside her parents, Carl and Terry Schmitt, and younger sister, Jessica.

Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association applauds members partnering with dairy farmers as market changes Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) is pleased to note that several of its milk buyer members are taking on farms displaced by Wisconsinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lost sales to Canada.

These companies and cooperatives include Dairy Farmers of America, Foremost Farms USA, Grande Cheese, and Mullins Cheese. WCMA member Grassland Dairy is retaining a group of farms affected by the lost milk market, as these farms had long-term contracts.

Cooperatives such as Dairy Farmers of America will market milk from these farms and many Wisconsin cheese manufacturers will be purchasing some of this extra milk to help. MN CREP sign-up began May 15 Landowners have a new option to protect their environmentally sensitive cropland with the introduction of the Minnesota Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (MN CREP). The kick-off for the MN CREP continuous sign-up began May 15, 2017. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Landowners have been waiting for this program, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited to help them with the process,â&#x20AC;? Dennis Fuchs, Administrator of the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservations District (SWCD) said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a great opportunity for farmers and landowners to implement conservation practices that support their needs while beneď&#x192;&#x17E;ting the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s water quality.â&#x20AC;?

MN CREP is a voluntary state-federal program designed to improve water quality and habitat conservation. It will protect and restore up to 60,000 acres of marginal cropland across 54 southern and western Minnesota counties, using buffer strips, wetland restoration and drinking water wellhead protection. The program is funded with approximately $350 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and $150 million from the State of Minnesota. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a milestone in conservation for Minnesota,â&#x20AC;? according to John Jaschke, Executive Director of the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR). â&#x20AC;&#x153;State soil and water conservation district staff and federal USDA staff are ready to help landowners get started.â&#x20AC;?

Landowners who are accepted in MN CREP will enroll in the USDAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) for 14-15 years. At the same time, the land will be put into a permanent conservation easement through the Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) easement program. Private ownership continues and the land is permanently restored and enhanced for water quality and habitat beneď&#x192;&#x17E;ts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have vulnerable areas in Stearns County that would be a perfect ď&#x192;&#x17E;t for this programâ&#x20AC;? says Dennis Fuchs, Administrator of the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservations District (SWCD). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Riparian buffers and community wellhead protection areas to protect drinking water supplies are places that we will be targeting with this program.â&#x20AC;?

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in 4-H and FFA, and I am a Goodhue County dairy princess. In 4-H, I participate in dairy quiz bowl and showing dairy cattle. In FFA, I am on the dairy foods judging team, which has made it to the state competition all four years I have been involved.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am passionate about the dairy industry, and I want to advocate for it as much as I can.

My favorite is being a dairy princess because I get to go to classrooms and talk to younger children about dairy.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/ organizations. A few years ago, I was able to go to the National 4-H Dairy Conference in Madison, Wis. During the conference, we toured World Dairy Expo, ABS Global and the Hoard’s Dairyman ofce. I got to see so many different things. I really like to write, so I was excited to tour the Hoard’s Dairyman ofce.

What’s your favorite social media? I like Facebook because I get to connect with family and friends. It’s also an easy way to promote things like dairy so a lot of people can see and learn about the dairy industry.

What are your career aspirations? In the fall, I plan to attend the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to major in

animal science. Then, I want to come back and farm together with my dad and brothers. While in college, I would also like to major in journalism so I can write for a dairy publication.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? It’s important to tell young children how to get nine essential nutrients by eating and drinking dairy products. These will help them grow to be healthy and strong.

He was a major promoter of the dairy industry. He fought hard for what he believed in, which was the future of agriculture.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. When I was 5 years old, I was kicked in the face by a cow because I was chasing chickens. I still have a scar from the stitches.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help my dad milk the cows for both morning and evening milking. I also feed calves, pick up eggs from our chickens and do any other chore my dad needs me to do.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? ing at Prestrud Dairy for the 24th annual Dunn County dairy breakfast, hosted by the Prestrud Family. Marv Prestrud, who milks 500 cows with his wife, Mary, and son, Chad, was pleased with how well the event turned out. The breakfast included a main course of wafď&#x192;&#x;es, along with an assortment of dairy products, as well as a playground and petting zoo. Additionally, bus tours of the dairy farm were given to those attending.

“It’s something we have to do” Schefers host school tour, educate about dairy

RICE, Minn. – For the past four years, Lyle and Becky Schefers have opened their barn doors to area school children, youth groups and community organizations, alike.

“In today’s world, it’s something we have to do,” said Lyle about the tours. “We can’t afford not to talk about our dairy and educate people about the industry.”

On May 15, Lyle and Becky welcomed nearly 100 kindergarten students from Holdingford Elementary onto their 600-cow dairy near Rice, Minn. The tour was a collaboration between the Schefers family and their

farming cohorts at Vita Plus, Sunrise Ag and Central Lakes College, and Stearns County Dairy Princess Roseann Mehr.

“These tours are something we started when our kids were rst in school,” said Becky, who volunteers at the elementary school. “It’s important, but we also want to make it fun.”

Since the school tours inception, Andy Carlson and Jack Hales, of Vita Plus, and Mike Brixius, of Sunrise Ag, have planned and conducted the farm tours.

At Schefers Dairy Farm, children learned about the source of their dairy products by watching a few short videos and walked through the different entities of the farm, including the freestall barn.

Volunteers guiding the tours also tested the young children’s knowledge of dairy farming by asking what types of feed cows eat, how much water a cow can consume in a day, and what is held in the bulk tank.

Many children were in awe of the size of the lactating animals and asked about the green chalk paint on the tails, which for the Schefers family indicates a conrmed pregnancy.

As the tour came to an end, the students loaded the buses with goodie bags and the Schefers family retreated to their daily chores with satisfaction in educating another young group of consumers about the dairy industry.

The University of Kentucky is teaming up with the University of Minnesota to offer the 2017 Conference on Precision Dairy Farming in Lexington. The conference is May 30 through June 1 at UK’s Coldstream Dairy Farm and the Hyatt Regency in downtown Lexington.

Conference speakers include: • Julio Giordano, assistant professor at Cornell University, specializes in health detection and precision dairy technology.

• Henk Hogeveen, professor of animal health management at Wageningen University in The Netherlands, specializes in economics of precision dairy technology.

• Marcia Endres, professor of dairy cattle production at the University of Minnesota, specializes in automated calf feeders, robotic milking and dairy welfare.

• Heather Dann, research scientist at the William H. Minor Agriculture Research Institute in Chazy, New York, specializes in nutrition and precision dairy technology.

• Christina Petersson-Wolfe, associate professor and extension dairy scientist at Virginia Tech, specializes in milk quality and dairy technology.

In addition to the above speakers, the conference attendees will also will also hear industry updates, producer speakers and producer panels where farmers will talk about how they are applying technologies on their farms Registration and a trade show will begin at 11 a.m. EDT May 30 and the conference will begin at 1 p.m. The rst day will wrap up with dinner at 6:30 p.m. On May 31 and June rst, the presentations begin at 8:50 a.m. The conference adjourns at noon June 1.
