Ebersviller creates zoo alongside dairy

VERGAS, Minn. – Traveling through north central Minnesota, one dairy farm stands out against the winding roads; not because of the towering silos or the freestall barn, but for what surrounds the dairy – a zoo.

For the past 17 years, Dustin Ebersviller has raised an assortment of animal species on his family’s 170-cow dairy farm near Vergas, Minn.

“This has been a hobby of mine for quite some time,” Dustin said. “In the spring of 2015, I needed to make something of it or cut back on my hobby.”

Now, Trowbridge Creek Zoo is entering its second year open to the public with more than 35 animal species to view – from zebras to alligators to ringtailed lemurs.

“It all started when I got two whitetailed fawns from my middle school friend,” Dustin said. “Then, I purchased elk calves, fallow and sika deer, and water buffalo.”

Dustin’s father, Dave, agreed.

“In ninth grade, he asked if he could raise deer,” he said. “At one point, he had as many as 25 deer and elk on the farm.”

The animal collection grew over the years, as Dustin acquired various African hoofstock, and housed them on a small acreage of his family’s dairy farm.

Of the 40 acres available east of the dairy, Dustin’s zoo claims 10 of them, with high fences separating the zoo from the agricultural enterprise and a walking path through the animal exhibits.

“At one point, this was all alfalfa eld, then I started taking over,” said Dustin.

Once committed to carrying out his exotic animal display and opening the zoo to the public, Dustin reached out to a friend, who owns a traveling petting zoo, for advice on his new venture.

“It’s not an easy market to retain and sell these animals,” Dustin said. “I’ve

In addition to selling some of his own stock in exchange for others, Dustin is a member of a private market that provides animals born and raised in the United States.

“I have a wish list of animals I want and just wait until they become available … giraffes, hyenas, wart hogs,” Dustin said.

As Dustin grew his zoo and made denite plans to open the exhibit to the public, he toured

other privately owned zoos for guidance.

“I planned a lot over the winter,” Dustin said. “But what I thought would take two months to build took a year.”

Every animal or group of animals has their own pen, with ample space for the environment to mimic the animals’ natural habitat. While the goats, sheep and miniature donkey are in an interactive area at the zoo, the other animals are housed in pens that limit human contact for visitors’ safety.

Additionally, Dustin built a tall fence surrounding the

perimeter of the zoo, deterring wild animals from entering.

The young entrepreneur also had legal obstacles to work around before opening his exhibit, including three licenses from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Minnesota Board of Animal Health (BAH) and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Prior to the zoo’s opening, Dustin underwent three on-site inspections from the USDA so he could obtain his exhibitor’s license.

“It’s the same process as being inspected on the dairy for selling your milk,” Dustin said. “They want to make sure the animals are safe and the zoo is operating to code.”

With a sense of imagination, owning a zoo is much like operating a dairy farm.

Dustin’s day begins early, feeding all the animals, and ends late into the evening, well after the visitors have left for the day.

“Being a zoo keeper is just like farming – there’s no such thing as a typical day. There’s chores to be done, supplies to purchase and always something to x,” said Dustin, who still nds time to milk cows with his father.

Luckily, Dustin has help from his family.

His wife, Rachel, and six children – Zebulan, 11, Telemacus, 10, Aracely, 8, Arianna, 6, Cecil, 5, and Cephus, 3 – all help with daily chores. Dustin’s nephew also helps during the summer months.

While most of Dustin’s children are too young for many of the responsibilities of zoo keeping, they do

“All the newborns are fed by bottle,” Dustin said.

“They’re not all pets, but a few have names, like Carl and Connie the camels.”

As Dustin prepares for his second open season beginning Memorial Day Weekend, he is expecting upwards of 200 people arriving each weekend in the summer, with a smaller crowd throughout the week.

“I never thought I’d get this far with my hobby and receive so many positive comments about it,” Dustin said. “There are so many things I’ve done here that I learned on the farm.”

Dave agreed.

Completing the transition Coulee Graziers host May pasture walk at Kling farm

TAYLOR, Wis. – Servicing Buffalo, Jackson, Clark, Eau Claire, Pepin, Trempealeau, La Crosse and Monroe Counties, the Coulee Graziers Network has been bringing farmers together to discuss grazing opportunities for over a decade.

cows on his farm near Taylor, Wis., with his wife, Karen, has been a member of the network for 13 years. Kling welcomed 25 guests from across the state to his farm for a Coulee Graziers Pasture Walk on May 11.

Kling is in the process of transitioning his farm to organic production. Having grazed his cattle for several years, he said the transition was logical given his current practices and

“We grazed our herd until around 2010 to 2011,” Kling said. “We were already following a lot of organic practices before we made the decisions, and with the economics of dairy being where they are, it just seemed right.”

Skepticism is what prevented Kling from making the transition. He was hesitant to raise crops using organic methods in fear of sacricing yields.

“In 2014, I was custom harvesting organic corn in the area,” Kling said. “Needless to say, I was proved wrong when I saw how well corn could be grown organically.”

It was at that time Kling decided to make the switch.

“We will have three groups for milk cows and additional groups for dry, breeding and young heifers,” Kling said.

With that many acres connected, lanes to and from the freestall and parlor have been essential. As Kling is still setting up his paddocks, he asked visitors for suggestions for future lanes. In the past, he tried several options before installing concrete lanes. Kling has been pleased with their durability, especially in harsh weather.

“We are considering doing more concrete lanes as we nish up the paddocks,” Kling said. “We have a half-mile eld road that we are considering putting in a cement lane for

certied organic with plans to certify the cows in November. While he is excited about his farm’s future as an organic dairy, pasturing a relatively large herd has been his biggest challenge.

“That was denitely our biggest challenge going into it,” Kling said. “How were we going to go about grazing this number of cows and do it right?”

The main farm has 320 total acres with 250 tillable that have all been raised conventionally in the past. Across the road, an additional 80 acres had been used for raising steers. As Kling approaches the completion of the farm’s transition process, he plans to utilize all the acreage that connects to the farm for pasturing.

The 2.5-foot wide concrete lane runs adjacent to an identical lime screening lane he also installed. Kling said that while both lanes get cows from point A to point B, his preference is clear.

“The way I see it, when it comes to lanes, it is money well-spent,” Kling said. “In areas of low ground where cows are tracking two or more times per day, mud accumulates which leads to mastitis and even bigger problems down the road. That’s why I think concrete lanes are the way to go.”

In the paddocks, gates are located along the fence every 300 feet with paddocks subdivided based on group size. Paddocks range from three to ve acres in size with a ve-strand perimeter fence around the far side of the pasture. Kling is using poly wire as fencing, with the intention of installing a permanent fence once they have nalized their grazing rotation.

One challenge Kling’s pastures

pose is the lack of trees for shade. Based on his previous grazing experiences, he intends on giving the cows access to the barn during the heat of the day.

“Once it reaches 90 degrees on a humid day, it can get really rough out here,” Kling said. “We let the cows into the freestall with fans on during the heat of the day to keep them cool.”

Kling is looking forward to what is ahead as he completes his transition into organic production. While there is still more work to be done, he said he isn’t looking back.

“After I saw rst-hand what you can do as an organic producer, I knew it was the right step,” Kling said. “So far, it has been a good decision for us.”

Kling’s pasture walk is the rst of a monthly pasture walk meeting series hosted by the Coulee Graziers. Walks are held to offer farmers the opportunity to network and learn through farmerled discussion to improve protability with environmentally sound grazing practices.

Tell us about your farm. Our home farm is 185 acres, and we rent about 400 acres where we raise corn, beans and alfalfa. Our prex for our registered Holsteins is Minnigan Hills. We farm with both our sons and have high school kids help with milking. We ush cows to improve our herd’s genetics.

Tell us about the farm you currently operate. We own 160 acres and rent an additional 360 acres. We raise corn, alfalfa and soybeans. We do all our own eldwork and harvesting.

How did you get into farming? After returning from two years in the Army, I came home and began farming with my dad.

What is a highlight of your dairy each year? Showing cattle at the county fair, going to World Dairy Expo and going to Louisville to the National Farm Equipment Show to watch my brother-in-law pull my father-in-law’s tractor.

What does the dairy industry mean to you? It has never been a job to me. It is a way of life and time I can spend with my family. I feel fortunate because not everyone gets to work and spend time with their spouse, sons and grandchildren the way I do.

Who do you network with besides family? Our nutritionist, eld man, neighbors and other dairy farmers.

How did you get into farming? We both grew up on dairy farms. Neither of us had a home farm to start out. In April 1975, we started farming on halves with a farmer by Ridgeway, Minn. We purchased and moved to our current farm in October 1976.

You can discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of dairy farming.

What’s a highlight for you and your dairy each year? On Father’s Day we have a cookout followed by the annual water gun/balloon ght between Grandpa and the grandkids. We also enjoy taking the grandkids each summer to a Minnesota Twins baseball game and the Mall of America.

What does the dairy industry mean to you? We enjoy dairy farming and working together for 42 years. A farm is a great place to raise a family and you can be your own boss.

Besides family, who else do you network with about dairy topics? Our nutritionist, vet and other farmers. We belong to a group of eight farming couples who we meet with eight times a year and farming is always part of the discussion. We call our group the Milk Duds.

Market bulls received more fodder in the May 16 Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction. The weighted average for all products offered shot up for the fth consecutive event, up 3.2 percent, following gains of 3.6 percent on May 2, 3.1 percent jump April 18, 1.6 percent April 4, and 1.7 percent on March 14.

Rennet casein was the only negative, down 3.7 percent, after it jumped 10.4 percent on May 2.

Butter was the unquestioned leader, up an attention grabbing 11.2 percent, following a 1.1 percent increase last time. Anhydrous milkfat was up 8.2 percent, after a 4.7 percent advance. Buttermilk powder was up 7 percent, after leading the gains last time with a 21.8 percent charge. Lactose was up 2 percent, whole milk powder was up 1.3 percent, after a 5.2 percent boost, and skim milk powder was up 1 percent, after it inched 0.9 percent lower last time. The smallest gain was in GDT Cheddar, up 0.6 percent, after it advanced 4.6 percent last time.

FC Stone equated the average 80 percent butterfat GDT butter price to $2.4247 per pound U.S. CME butter closed Friday at $2.3750 per pound. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.6902 per pound U.S. and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.67. GDT skim milk powder was 90.64 cents per pound and whole milk powder averaged $1.5025 per pound U.S. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk price closed Friday at 91.50 cents per pound.

Most mid-May dairy prices at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange also climbed higher as traders absorbed the GDT, awaited Friday afternoon’s April Milk Production report and Monday’s April Cold Storage report.

Buoyed in part by the GDT, CME butter shot up to $2.43 per pound Tuesday, highest price since December 9, 2015, only to ease back Wednesday, regain some ground Thursday, and then slip Friday. It nished at $2.3750, up 11 1/4-cents on the week after jumping 15 1/2-cents the previous week, and is 30 1/2-cents above a year ago. A hefty 26 cars exchanged hands on the week.

reports Dairy Market News (DMN). Some manufacturers plan to build late summer/fall inventories and readily available cream continues to ow to churns. Some Central butter makers report receiving discounted cream from the Southwest. Retail butter demand varies. Some are seeing better-than-expected sales, while others report a seasonal slowdown. “Global tightness on milk fat has some buyers purchasing butter ahead of an increasing export demand,” says DMN. Western butter output is generally steady. However, larger pulls of cream from ice cream manufacturers are allowing butter makers to ease back. Contacts report there is plenty of cream available. DMN says U.S. market butter prices have been prodded higher by tight supplies and subsequent higher prices abroad. However, U.S. butter inventories remain long. The recent price increases have prompted a rush of domestic buying activity. Other end users are taking regular shipments and are willing to take a wait and see approach to prices.

The 40-pound Cheddar blocks hit $1.67 per pound Tuesday, then slipped back, recovered, and closed the third Friday of May at $1.67, up 3 1/2-cents on the week, 35 1/2-cents above a year ago, and the highest price since February 6, 2017. The barrels nished at $1.47, down 6 cents on the week, 11 1/2-cents above a year ago, but a way-too-high 20 cents below the blocks. Ten cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME and 39 of barrel.

This combined with short term tightness of 30 day or fresher block cheese is why we have a big block-barrel spread.

Like a broken record, DMN reports there is no shortage of milk for cheesemakers in the Midwest. Some continue to take spot milk, at prices $3.00 to $6.00 under Class. Cheese output continues to keep in line with milk supplies. Block supplies vary, barrels are long, and producers are pushing to clear some aged product. Process cheese producers report slight increases in sales, whereas traditional and pizza cheese demand has increased noticeably. There is concern regarding the price gap, as block price gains have outpaced the barrels, DMN warned, and “Some suggest a stable market depends on a narrow block to barrel variance.”

Western cheese production remains at or near full capacity. Some cheese plants are running into production issues. Others have scheduled downtime to complete needed repairs or maintenance but, either way, cheese makers are facing challenges in processing the plentiful milk. Cheese supplies are long, especially for barrels. Inventories for blocks are a little better balanced but contacts report some offers at heavily discounted prices. The grilling season has begun and domestic retail demand is steady. However, some market participants feel the recent price increases could choke off available

export opportunities.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk ended the week at 91 1/2-cents per pound, 5 1/4-cents higher than the previous week, 10 cents above a year ago, and the highest spot price since February 10, 2017. Thirty four cars were sold on the week.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski wrote in his May 15 Early Morning Update that “adverse weather conditions in Europe so far this ush is adding a bullish tone to the market. A month ago it seemed like there would be another big round of intervention buying in Europe which still cannot be discounted. Last week the EU bought almost 2,000mt with Dutch and British product in the mix.” He also pointed out that the U.S. dollar is trading at its lowest point since the November election, which increases U.S. competitiveness in NFDM. He said “There was reports of a lot of export business for NFDM into Mexico last week, as well as production concerns coming out of the southwest with a plant potentially being down. This should strengthen the NFDM market for the time being but with the recent rally in butter and schools letting out for summer in a couple weeks, this market looks to soften come June,” he warned.

The latest Crop Progress report shows 71 percent of the U.S. corn crop is planted, as of the week of May 14, up from 47 percent the previous week, down from 73 percent a year ago, but 1 percent ahead of the ve year average. Thirty one percent of the corn is emerged, up from 15 percent the previous week, 10 percent behind a year ago, and 5 percent behind the ve year average.

Thirty two percent of soybeans are in the ground, up from 14 percent the previous week, 2 percent behind of a year ago and dead even with the ve year average.

Thirty three percent of the cotton is planted, up from 21 percent the week before, 5 percent behind a year ago and 4 percent behind the average.

The May 16 Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook reported that feed prices for 2016/17 are still expected to be relatively low, with price forecasts for corn and soybean meal of $3.25-$3.55 per bushel and $320 per short ton, respectively.

Feed prices for 2017/18 are expected to remain relatively low, with price forecasts for corn and soybean meal at $3.00-$3.80 per bushel and $295-$335 per short ton, respectively.

Dairy margins continued to strengthen over the rst half of May; rising milk prices provided most of the improvement against feed costs that held mostly steady, according to Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. Their latest Margin Watch (MW) says “Margins remain historically strong, at or above the 80th percentile of the previous 10 years through Q1 of 2018. Milk prices have been supported by strength in both cheese and particularly butter.”

Despite heavy spring rainfall with below-normal temperatures, the latest planting progress report shows both corn and soybean seeding on pace with long-term averages.”

“This should mitigate concerns over the potential for farmers to elect prevented-planting provisions in insurance contracts or make signicant acreage shifts from corn to soybeans,” according to the MW. March uid milk consumption gained some ground.

DMN reported packaged uid sales totaled 4.2 billion pounds, up 0.5 percent from March 2016. Conventional product sales totaled 3.99 billion pounds, up 0.1 percent from a year ago. Organic products, at 231 million pounds, were up 8 percent and represented about 5.5 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.26 billion pounds, up 4.9 percent from a year ago and made up 29.7 percent of total uid sales in the month. March skim milk sales were down 10.8 percent from a year ago.

Total packaged uid sales for rst three months of 2017 totaled 12.3 billion pounds, down 2.1 percent from 2016. Year-to-date sales of conventional products, at 11.6 billion pounds, were down 2.4 percent; organic products, at 662 million pounds, were up 2.7 percent.

Organic represented about 5.4 percent of total uid milk sales so far in 2017.

Speaking of uid milk; the June Federal order Class I base milk price is $15.31 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 11 cents from May, $2.17 above June 2016, and equates to $1.32 per gallon. The six month average stands at $16.27, up from $14.01 at this time a year ago and compares to $16.31 in 2015.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted eight requests for export assistance this week from member cooperatives to sell 930,351 pounds of cheese and 220,462 pounds of butter to customers in Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The product has been contracted for delivery through August and raised 2017 exports to 31.6 million pounds of American-type cheeses, and 2.1 million pounds of 82 percent milkfat butter to 15 countries on four continents.

In politics, National Milk reported that State milk regulators have requested that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) work with them to enforce the proper use of milk and milk product labeling terms, especially those meant to distinguish between real dairy products and plant-based imitators. NMPF’s Beth Briczinski said “It’s time for FDA to work with state agencies in defending standards of identity for dairy products.”

The U.S. dairy industry commended Robert Lighthizer, the newly conrmed U.S. Trade Representative, for taking swift action under the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act (TPA) to begin the process for modernizing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Lighthizer outlined in a letter to Congress areas of the agreement that are either outdated or missing, several of which are important to the U.S. dairy industry. He reafrmed commitment to pursuing the trade priorities outlined by TPA, including goals related to market access and curbing the abuse of geographical indications.

He also emphasized the importance of effectively implementing and aggressively enforcing the commitments made by Canada and Mexico.

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), NMPF, and the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) have repeatedly urged administration ofcials and legislators to focus on maintaining what has worked well, such as trade with Mexico, the top market for U.S. dairy exports. The dairy groups continued to call for improving market access to Canada and tackling that country’s expanding list of protectionist policies and other barriers to U.S. dairy exports.

believe the Canadian Senate could be nished with their third reading of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) agreement text by the end of May, meaning that CETA could enter into provisional application in July 2017. The biggest gain for EU dairy is the additional access granted to cheese in the form of a duty free quota (18,500 MT from year 6 of the agreement). 16,800 MT of this quota will be set aside for high value consumer or “ne” cheese and the remaining 1,700 MT will apply to industrial cheese, according to DMN. Meanwhile; the public comment period for the California Federal Milk Marketing Order (CA FMMO) Recommended Decision closed May 15. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) says it has reviewed USDA’s Recommended Decision and State Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross stated that “The recommended decision found that the quota program should remain entirely within the jurisdiction of CDFA, operate as a stand-alone program and that its proper recognition under the proposed CA FMMO would be through an authorized deduction from payments due to producers.”

“In response to the USDA’s recommendation and

input from California milk producers, CDFA is ready and willing to establish a stand-alone, producer funded quota program. However, to ensure a stand-alone quota program is not disrupted, it is necessary to remove any statutory ambiguity that may exist in California’s statutes. Therefore, it is the CDFA’s intention to sponsor legislation to ensure the proper authority lies with the department, convene the Producer Review Board (Board), develop the necessary details for a stand-alone quota program, and hold a producer referendum on the Board’s recommendations.”

The letter said it is CDFA’s goal that “all of this should happen prior to the CA FMMO producer referendum,” and recommended that USDA use CDFA’s “inhouse expertise” if a CA FMMO is approved by producers.

Lastly, dairy checkoff collars are funding a new campaign entitled “Undeniably Dairy.” The campaign is designed to “rekindle consumers” love for our products,” according to the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy’s website, “and help reshape the way people think about dairy and all that we do.”

dairy producers to sell their cows or breed them with beef breeds. The current and upcoming generations of dairy cattle are thus less productive than those that preceded them, but their calves are more valuable. Coupled with the feed shortage, this has noticeably reduced Japanese milk production. In 2014 and 2015, butter supplies were so tight during the November and December baking season that the government announced plans to import record butter volumes in Àscal year 2016, which ended March 31, 2017.

Japanese butter imports did not reach the anticipated record highs, but they were dramatically larger than the volumes that prevailed before the baking crisis. Imports remained relatively strong through Àrst quarter, suggesting that butter in Japan has remained in tight supply well past the traditional winter demand surge.

Inventories of American cheese jumped 4.1% or 32.7 million pounds in April from March ending stocks. The growth in American cheese stocks propelled a 42-million-pound jump in total cheese stocks, which reached 1.33 billion pounds, a fresh record high. Total cheese inventories are up 10.4% from a year ago. In contrast, butter inventories grew a modest 19.8 million pounds. It seems that domestic butter output and imports are not keeping pace with demand, resulting in a smaller-than-normal stock build. On June 26, CME Group will transition the Cheddar spot call to the electronic Direct Auction Platform, which already houses the butter and nonfat dry milk spot trades.

Indeed, the 2016-17 announcement points to better times as milk prices return to levels more familiar to New Zealand dairy producers. Pasture conditions for the offseason are in better condition as well, which is also improving the outlook.

The good news for New Zealand producers continues. Fonterra announced its forecast farmgate milk price for the 2017-18 season at NZ$6.50/kgms, a 5.7% improvement over the current season and the highest price since the 2013-14 recordsetting price of $8.40. Over the past Àve years, Fonterra’s dividend averaged 29¢. At that rate, plus the current price forecast, Fonterra’s dairy producers could be looking at a cash payout of $6.79/ kgms, well above the Àve-year average of $6.03. With milk output already turning positive in New Zealand, improved prices and solid pasture conditions could be enough to turn on the milk spigot. CME spot block cheese prices turned higher today as bidders lifted offers. The Cheddar block price settled at $1.665/lb., up 2¢ on the day after Àve trades. Cheddar barrels, which are still rumored to be widely available throughout the country, slipped 1¢ to close at $1.4625 on uncovered offers. The block-barrel price spread is a wide 20.25¢

Church mission leads to chosen career Matthews kick-starts Cambodian dairy

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – When Kenny Matthews decided to milk cows, he did not have a home farm to create a transition plan for; he did not even have an ounce of dairy farming in his blood. All Matthews had was a vision of providing a nutritious food source to a community in need.

Now, the young entrepreneur operates Moo Moo Farms in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with his parents, Bill and Jamie, wife, Lindsay, and business partner, Matt Boyd. Together, they milk 21 cows.

“We are the rst dairy farm in Cambodia,” Matthews said. “There is a big movement for locally produced products and healthier alternatives for children.

It’s timely for us to enter the market, and the Cambodian people are excited.”

Matthews is originally from Alpine, Utah, but through a series of travels growing up and through church missionary work, he found comfort in South East Asia.

“In 2006, my family was stationed in Bangkok, Thailand, while my dad worked with the U.S. Embassy,” Matthews said.

“Three years later, I was called to serve in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for two years.

It was at this time where my love for the people and culture grew … I began thinking of ways I could continue to serve after my mission.”

Upon completing his business management degree at Utah Valley University in 2014, Matthews accepted an internship

“Dairy farming kept coming up in conversation with my dad,” Matthews said. “All the dairy products in the stores were imported.”

For more than 50 years, Cambodia has imported its entire dairy product supply from neighboring countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam, but also New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

Understanding the current market place, Matthews and his family dived into their venture of producing local,

fresh dairy.

“I liked the idea of the huge economic and social impact that the country’s rst domestic dairy farm could potentially have,” Matthews said. “After a few months of research, we decided to pull the trigger. We relied heavily on Google and a few family friends who have decades of experience in the industry.”

In 2015, Matthews and his wife moved to Cambodia, and by the end of the year they purchased land, navigated through government regulations and found sources of feed and equipment. By December, Matthews imported 11 Hol-

stein-Brahman heifers.

“After three days stuck at the border in negotiations, the cows were nally released and brought to the farm,” Matthews said. “The next couple months were spent building the milking parlor, as all 11 were expected to calve the upcoming spring.”

The small herd of cattle is milked twice each day using a bucket milking system. Once the milk is collected, it is processed and packaged on site, and then distributed to one of 14 locations across the country.

“Initially, we did not sell the milk,” Matthews said. “The milk was raw and we didn’t have a pasteurizer.”

Now, Matthews sells the milk every two days, but does not have enough supply to keep up with the demand.

The herd is producing 40 pounds per cow per day, and Matthews sells the milk for $8.50 per gallon at the various retail outlets.

“My father and I have spent this initial phase without either of us paying ourselves a salary, yet the dairy is breakeven within the rst six months of selling [milk],” Matthews said. “All we need is more cows and more milk.”

In the coming year, Matthews would like to expand his operation to 300 cows housed in a freestall barn and milked in a herringbone parlor. Although the construction project is only meant to increase the herd to a couple hundred milking cows, the facilities will be built with the capabilities to hold 1,000 cows.

With a larger processing facility, Matthews hopes to provide milk, cheeses and yogurts to Cambodian communities.

DODGEVILLE, Wis. – Like many farmers across the Midwest, the father-son duo of Tim and Ross Blotz are anxious to get back in the elds.

After milking their herd of 100 cows on their farm near Dodgeville, Wis., on May 23, the Blotzes had hoped to do just that. However, when the weather forecast called for an inch of rain that afternoon, the Blotzes decided it was a perfect day to catch up on fencing projects across the farm.

The day began just as any other for Ross. He and his father arrived in the barn at 5 a.m. to begin morning milking. While they have a herd of mostly Holsteins, there are several Jerseys, Brown Swiss and crosses of the breeds.

“100 percent of the cows are bred using A.I., as well as 99 percent of the heifers,” Ross said. “We do have a few jumper bulls that are used on heifers we have a harder time breeding and some crosses from embryos we had early on.”

The Blotzes milk in a 44-stall stanchion barn, where they switch cows during each milking. The stanchion is attached to a naturally-ventilated freestall barn. The freestall was built in 2013 to provide additional housing for the herd and improve cow comfort.

After the morning milking was complete, Tim and Ross moved on to feeding and routine farm chores. Ross, who cares for the herd’s youngstock, delivered bottled milk to six calves and feed to weaned calves. Meanwhile, using a skidloader, Tim delivered hay to the heifers and steers in the recently completed heifer shed.

“We started building a heif-

er shed last fall because we were overcrowded on our facilities,” Ross said. “We completed the project in March and love it. We are already seeing healthier heifers and have a lot more control.”

After all the youngstock was fed, Ross drove up the road to begin mixing feed for the milking herd. When he returned to the tiestall barn at 10, he pushed up residual feed and fed large square bales of hay before distributing TMR on the barn’s conveyor, which was originally installed to feed out of silos.

we tore down a silo that had gone bad and planned to put up another,” Tim said. “We ended up not going that route, as we went to storing our silage in bags. While it might not be as convenient as a drive thru lane, it still works for us.”

After completing morning chores, days vary on the Blotz farm. The majority of summer days are spent in the elds, but the wet conditions that have challenged the Midwest this spring have limited the Blotzes’ ability to get in the eld.

“I’m anxious to make hay just like everyone else,” Ross said. “We only have corn, some new seeding alfalfa and oats in so far, but we have a long way to go.”

The farm runs a total of 507 acres on farms throughout the Dodgeville, Wis., area. One of Ross’s goals for the dairy is to begin farming land closer to the main farm site.

“Our farthest land is 13 miles away,” Ross said. “I would like to farm closer to home to manage nutrients better.”

“The majority of my role is spent feeding calves, hauling hay or doing eldwork,” Anne said. “I like to do whatever I can wherever I am needed.”

Anne added that working and raising a family on the farm makes every day that much more enjoyable; on April 29, she and Ross welcomed their new-

born daughter, Twyla.

“Sure, being on a farm can get stressful, but it really is peaceful and relaxing most days,” Anne said. “The best part of my day is when I am able to be with the cows in the barn milking.”

In the future, Ross and Anne hope to transition into ownership of the dairy farm. For now, Ross said his working relation-

“Most of the time, it’s really good to be able to work with my dad. Sure, we have our disagreements here and there, but we still work very well together,” Ross said.

There are many family members who also provide help and support when necessary.

Tim’s wife, Laura Jean, and Ross’s uncles, John Aschliman and Dennis Thompson, help with milking when they are in the elds or off the farm. Anne said having so many working parts on the farm is a benet.

“There is a lot of support that comes from working with your extended family. Everyone knows how to do things and cares that they are done right,” she said.

Blazing a trail Van Veldhuizen operation is the pilot farm for an automated milking system

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Like many dairy farmers, Corwin and Stephanie Van Veldhuizen could never ď&#x192;&#x17E;nd enough hours in each day.

The Van Veldhuizens and their children, Tyler, 17, Shelby, 13, and Trevor, 10, provide all the labor for their 265cow, 500-acre dairy operation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were spending too many hours in the milking parlor,â&#x20AC;? Stephanie said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t any time left over for us as a family.â&#x20AC;?

About ď&#x192;&#x17E;ve years ago, Corwin and Stephanie began to explore ways to solve their time problem. Their search would lead the Van Veldhuizens to installing a GEA Monobox automated milking system.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;My parents, Arthur A. and Nellie, purchased this farm in 1971,â&#x20AC;? Corwin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The next year, they built a double-6 herringbone milking parlor. Our family used that parlor for 43 years.â&#x20AC;?

The robotic milkers arrived at the Van Veldhuizen farm in May 2016 and began to perform shakedown milkings in June. The Van Veldhuizens began to milk their entire herd of 220 head in their robots on Aug. 28. They have since grown their milking herd to 265 head. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We manned the boxes 24 hours a day for the ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst three weeks,â&#x20AC;? Stephanie said.

To help with the transition, a team that specializes in automated milking system startups assisted the family for the ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst 10 days. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel that we had a very successful startup,â&#x20AC;? Corwin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Within 10 days, milk production had returned to

BROOKLYN, Wis. – Lindsay Byrne always knew she wanted to milk cows on her family’s farm near Brooklyn, Wis. Working alongside her dad, Duane Byrne, and grandfather, Jim Byrne, in high school, she anxiously awaited the day she would join them full-time.

That was until her junior year of high school, when torn tendons in her hip made her consider her career options.

After studying soil science and undergoing a series of surgeries to repair her hips, Byrne returned to the farm in 2013, taking over the management of the herd’s 85 cows.

Byrne said she has been in a barn as long as she was able to.

“I always loved the farm. As soon as I could, I was milking cows in the parlor with Dad when I was 12,” Byrne said.

By the age of 14, Byrne found a love of record keeping, and began setting up books for nearly every protocol on the farm. Even at a young age, she was considering how proper records could aid her

farming career later on.

“Better records make for easier management. They make us better able to track problems and know what lies ahead,” Byrne said.

Byrne’s aspirations for running the dairy were suddenly put on hold nine years ago, when at the age of 17 she was diagnosed with iliopsoas tendonitis. The tendons in her hips were catching in her hip socket, causing inammation and pain in both hips making mobility limited. The pain caused by the physical labor on the farm was nearly unbearable.

“I thought my only option was to get a degree and pursue a different job,” Byrne said. “That’s when I decided to attend University of Wisconsin-Platteville and study soil science.”

Byrne fell in love with the major almost overnight. During the week, she attended class, completed projects and worked with fellow students in her course of study. On the weekends, she travelled to help on the farm as best she could while also undergoing a series of four surgeries to help treat her hips.

During her senior year, Byrne transferred to UW-Madison. In that time, she received a job offer to begin working full time during the school year. She saw a unique opportunity that seemed to t with

“Ultimately, I was facing the decision to farm or complete my schooling,” Byrne said. “The job I was offered would allow me to come home more often to help out on the farm; that’s where my heart was at.”

Byrne ended her schooling and took the job, allowing her to spend more time where it meant most. While she does not regret her schooling, she says she was never invested in it the same way she was invested in the farm.

“When I was in college, it was getting to the point I wasn’t at home enough to take care of the things I was responsible for with the herd,” Byrne said. “I got decent grades and enjoyed my classes, but I knew where I was meant to be.”

Byrne returned to the farm in 2013. In doing so, she began purchasing cows to begin a herd of her own.

While she continues to work alongside her dad, a third of the cows are her own. Her father handles all of the farm’s maintenance and eldwork, while Byrne is the primary herd manager. She said since her return, their working relationship has been synergistic.

“He is more detailed out there in the eld while I’m much more detailed here in the parlor,” Byrne said. “We always have worked well together.”

Byrne has integrated new ideas into the farm. Most recently, she purchased new calf hutches to better start off her youngstock.

“I’m very meticulous when it comes to calves, but you can only do so good if your housing isn’t up to par,” Byrne said. “I found a newer style hutch that offered better ventilation, inside feeding and were able to be closed up if they needed to, which has made a major difference in health of the calves on the farm.”

Improving calf care was just one of the goals Byrne made for herself when she set out on her full-time dairying career. As she is looking to the near future, her next goal is to improve her heifer conception rate.

“Not living on the farm makes catching heats tough; every night before heading home, I spend 15 to 20 minutes watching the heifer pen for heats,” Byrne said. “I

While Byrne is appreciative for the opportunity to leave the farm and learn something new, she is happy to be where she feels she most belongs. She continues to attend regular physical therapy for her iliopsoas tendonitis and said she is no longer limited by her physical capabilities.

“I learned a lot of different information, ideas and management tools while I was at school. Doing something different from what I truly wanted to do made me more condent in the choice to go back to the farm,” Byrne said.

According to Byrne, the greatest thing she learned in college was not taught in a classroom, but rather realized in her return.

“Having had that experience, I never have to look back and wonder ‘what if,’” Byrne said. “If college taught me one thing, it validated that farming is what I want to do from now on.”

It has been cold and wet the last two weeks. We have been sitting and waiting the last two weeks for hay. We need heat, but if it were to warm up, we are still a week to 10 days from cutting hay. A lot of people RAINFALL didn’t get the opportunity to TOTALS get stuff in because of the Last 2 small window of time we had.

Things haven’t dried out so a Weeks lot of people are trying to get corn in. It hasn’t looked good.

The weather is supposed to get nicer and rain is supposed to quit, but it is hard to estimate when we can get in the field again. We have had a lot of Northeast wind, which is lake wind and makes it very cold for us. We’ve gotten 5.5 to 6 Since April 1 inches of rain in the area the 12” last two weeks, but there are a lot of places nearby that got it way worse than us. Even with the cold and wet weather, the new seeding alfalfa is coming up nicely and the corn is starting to emerge.

In the last two weeks, we finished our corn and soybeans. The first corn we planted is all up and the last is starting to pop through now. We have not made any RAINFALL hay because it has been too TOTALS wet, cold and rainy without Last 2 sun. We are waiting to get Weeks going now and dry off. We got first pass corn spraying done. There are a lot of soybeans and some corn left to be planted in our 2” area. When the weather is good, everyone is getting a lot done, but unfortunately there is a one-week Since April 1 standstill in between, so it 7.5” is hard to get things done.

In the area, there has been some hay made but not a lot. We are ready to go with hay, just waiting for the weather to work itself out.

We haven’t had rain as bad as some places, but without slopes, it is just standing still. We are heavily saturated. I would estimate planting progress in the county iss about half to two- RAINFALL thirds done with corn, and TOTALS about 10 percent done with Last 2 beans. We are still a week Weeks to 10 days out from cutting hay. I don’t think we will be back in the fields touching anything until the first of June. It is so wet the furrows 3.75” from the planters are full of standing water – it is just not soaking in. The way it looks, we will have rain through the weekend and are Since April 1 going to need three or four 7.5” days of nice, sunny weather before we can do anything again. Some of the early planted corn is emerging, but it is looking yellow. Spring wheat is all planted and emerged.

We have 40 acres of corn left to plant, and then we will be done. We have first crop hay done. We were at Mother’s Day breakfast and decided to start. We started that night, were held up due RAINFALL to rain on Monday night, TOTALS and were able to finish on Last 2 Wednesday morning. It was Weeks kind of a gamble with the weather, but I’m glad we took the gamble. When we cut, it was 24 to 29 inches tall, depending on new or old seeding hay. When we tested it, the relative feed value was 165, so it was a lot worse than we thought it would be as I expected it to be around Since April 1 11.7” 180 to 190. We are saturated now. We have not had big rains, but it has not been sunny and we keep getting .2- to .7-inch rains. I am guessing we need three to four days of no rain, but it is muddy everywhere.

We had no idea the tornado had even happened until we 5.25” got up the next morning.

Everyone is talking about trying to get out to cut hay and hoping the ground Since April 1 7.25” holds up. I’m hoping to cut hay or rye in the next day or two, as long as the weather permits.

FREEPORT, Minn. – Deb Rohe has registered for many contests in her life but has never been named a winner.

That changed earlier this month when Deb and her

husband, Mike, were named the winners of the Rock Pickers for a Day Contest held by the Central Minnesota Credit Union and Dairy Star.

As Deb frequented the Freeport, Minn., branch ofce of the Credit Union, she jotted her name on a registration slip.

She did the same for her hus-

band.

“I did that at least a half dozen times, but really didn’t think much of it,” said Deb, knowing she never won a contest before.

But on May 8, Deb’s husband’s name was drawn as a nalist for the rock-picking contest. A short time later,

Mike was notied of his winnings in a live radio broadcast on KASM radio, of Albany, Minn., by radio personality Brad Mielke.

Mike chose May 12 to be the day the rock-picking crew would get to work in his elds; hopefully beating the corn sprouting out of the ground.

The Freeport dairyman milks 250 cows and farms 750 acres with his brothers, Marv and Bubba. Together, they comprise Rohe Dairy.

It was a pleasant afternoon to pick rock, with moderate temperatures and cloud cover.

“That was nice because that was 50 acres less that we had to pick,” Bubba said.

The Rohes’ usual rockpicking routine is three-tiered.

They pick with a skidloader rst and clean off the big rocks.

Then, before planting, they go over elds with a four-wheeler and pick more. On the last trip across the eld, they walk and toss any remaining rocks into a wagon.

“We go with one trailer and three to four guys. Usually it’s Harv driving, and Marv and Jim and I picking,” Bubba said.

“It was kind of neat to see that. To see people picking rock for us, instead of us doing it,” Bubba said. “When you are sitting in that tractor it gets boring driving that slow.”

From 11:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. the group picked eight wagons worth of rock off 50 acres of a corneld.

“That’s some of our worst land,” Bubba said.

Near the end of the four hours, Harv and Marv took a trip across the eld checking up on the work.

“He thought it was kind of nice.

He was making sure we did it right,”

Bubba said. “I just remember seeing two trailers out on the eld at one time.

I never saw that before on our elds. It just made me think we are getting a lot done that day.”

When the rock picking was complete, the Rohes treated the pickers for an afternoon meal featuring beef, turkey and venison summer sausage, barbeque, desserts and refreshments.

While relaxing with the free help, Bubba said it was a neat day that he would not mind duplicating again sometime soon.

“Those guys did a really good job. Put it this way, if they wanted to come back and pick more, we would let them,” Bubba said. “It was nice.”

Homemade macaroni and cheese 14 oz. pasta 7 Tbsp. unsalted butter 1/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp. all purpose flour 4 cups whole milk 1 1/2 tsp. dry mustard 1/8 tsp. cayenne

3 cups extra sharp Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 1 1/3 cups fresh grated Parmesan cheese 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs 2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper

Preheat oven to 350 and butter a 3-4 quart (9x13) Pyrex or shallow baking dish. In a heavy saucepan, melt 6 Tbsp. butter over med-low heat. Add flour and whisk for 3 minutes (creates a roux). Add milk in a stream, whisking, and bring to a boil, whisking. Add mustard, cayenne, salt and pepper, and simmer, whisking, until thickened, approximately 2 minutes. Cook pasta for 6 minutes in gently boiling water, until just about done (al dente). Drain pasta in colander and in a large bowl gently combine pasta, sauce, Cheddar cheese, 1 cup Parmesan, and sour cream. Transfer to baking dish. In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs and remaining 1/3 cup Parmesan and sprinkle over pasta. Cut up the remaining 1 Tbsp. butter and top bread crumbs. Bake pasta in middle of oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling.

To prepare ahead: Keep dish covered in fridge one day ahead, and let it come to room temp before baking. Serves 6-8 as an entrée. Serves 8-10 as a side dish.

Ten-dollar potatoes 3 pounds russet potatoes, boiled, peeled, cooled 1/4 cup butter 1 can (10 3/4 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup 2 cups sour cream

5 ounces (1 1/4 cups) Cheddar cheese, shredded 3 Tbsp. finely chopped onion 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper

Shred cooked potatoes into large bowl. Set aside. Melt 2 Tbsp. butter in 2-quart saucepan; add soup. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until smooth (3 to 5 minutes). Remove from heat. Stir in sour cream, cheese, onion, salt and pepper. Add to potatoes, mix well. Spoon potato mixture into ungreased 13x9-inch baking dish. Melt remaining 2 Tbsp. butter; drizzle over potato mixture. Cover; refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 60 to 65 minutes or until heated through and golden brown. To serve, cut into squares or spoon out. Yields 16 servings. Substitute 1 (32-ounce) bag frozen hashbrown potatoes. Stir frozen potatoes into sour cream mixture; spoon into baking dish; refrigerate. Back as directed above.

Mix together flour, butter, and pecans until crumbly. Press into bottom of ungreased 9x13 pan and bake until golden brown for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar and half of the cool whip.

Spread over cooled crust. For top layer, mix pudding mixes with milk until smooth and thickened. Spread over cream cheese mixture. Spread remaining cool whip over the top and garnish with chocolate bar. Refrigerate.
