Three days of visitors Suhrs host over 1,350 people to NE Iowa dairy By Abby Hopp Staff Intern
FREDERICKSBURG, Iowa – For 10 years, Suhr Dairy and Friend’s Annual Tour Days brings many visitors the rst Monday through Wednesday of May. More than 1,350 visitors were in attendance May 7-9. Brothers Ed and Everett Suhr and Ed’s wife, Lavonne, opened their farm to the public near Fredericksburg, Iowa. It all began when Ed and Lavonne’s oldest daughter’s preschool class toured the dairy farm. “Seeing kids’ expressions when they get to see something, touch something and smell something is my
favorite,” Lavonne Suhr said. Each year, the rst week of May is lled with excitement for Suhr Dairy as they host a three-day tour for school groups and the community. Each day, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the farm is ooded with students, teachers, families and community members excited to learn. The Suhrs have been milking for 19 years. They have a three-way partnership and milk 250 cows. Ed works with the calves, maturity barn and hoof trimming; Everett feeds and handles manure management; and Lavonne does the computer work and is the A.I. technician. “We each have our own job and it works good,” Suhr said. “We have three full-time employees for milking, but we do the rest ourselves.” Outside of the dairy farm, Suhr works behind the scenes with tour days and collects donations that come

in throughout the year. This past year, over 75 individuals volunteered at the farm’s tour days. Volunteers donate their money or items, as well as their time and talents to help with the event. “We could be gone and it could still happen,” Suhr said of the volunteers’ help. “They do it, we don’t.” With a population of over 900, the Fredericksburg community makes the event happen. Many individuals continue to ask how they can volunteer, along with bringing new ideas to try. “We have dairy cows, rabbits, chickens, laying hens, dogs, cats and market gilts; the rest is brought in by volunteers,” Suhr said. “Even the port-a-potties are donated.”
There is a photographer, babysitter to watch the children of the volunteers, and food for the volunteers. Volunteers also bring in a llama, ducks, hair sheep, wool sheep, fainting goats, peacocks, ducklings, horses, Shetland ponies, miniature ponies, piglets and other animals for exhibit. Individuals use their talents to provide displays on maple syrup, farm equipment, roots of a corn stalk, honeybees and others. “Everybody has their own specialty and does their own thing,” Suhr said. A volunteer also walks around the farm in a cow costume. The Chickasaw County Farm Bureau donated T-shirts for the volunteers and frozen yogurt was donated from Fayette County Dairy Producers and the Farmers Union Co-op and Country View Dairy in West Union. “We like to publicly thank the volunteers,” Suhr said. Last year, they began giving door prizes. It started with toy tractors but has snowballed with people wanting to be involved in other ways. For example, local businesses donated different items, some of which included tickets to the Iowa State Fair, a Bonnie Moore artwork piece, gas cards and gift cards. With each year, the tour days continue to grow. “We thought it topped out last year, but it keeps growing,” Suhr said. A farm safety day was added to provide fthgrade students with a hands-on experience. “We showed them a lagoon, a PTO with and without a cover, blind spot issues, dangers of a gravity box, bicycle safety and lawnmower safety,” Suhr said. More than 11 schools, totaling 33 different classes, came to tour the farm this year. “If we can get one person exposed to something they haven’t seen, heard, touched, smelled or tasted, we’ve done our job,” Suhr said.

Ahrens and his wife, Susan, were named the winners of the Rock Pickers for a Day Contest sponsored by the Central Minnesota Credit Union and Dairy Star. Stransky has desire to react to life in words

OWATONNA, Minn. – Ev Stransky said she cannot help when inspiration strikes. It is not uncommon for her husband, Joe, to nd her sitting at the kitchen table carefully crafting the words of a poem that are owing through her mind when he gets up at 4:30 a.m. to start the day’s chores. With hundreds of pages of poems and musings written throughout the years, Stransky has selected a variety to share with others in her recently published book, “Glimpse the Half Poems.” While there are a select few that revolve around farm life, most of the poems in these pages are about emotions and feelings in many aspects of life, which Stransky calls a cross section of living. “There is all kinds of crazy stuff in here,” said Stransky, whose family milks 125 cows on their dairy, Stranshome Farm, near Owatonna, Minn. Stransky hopes people can appreciate the writing in their own way. “My hope for this book is people will sit down and read a poem and let it touch them from their life experience,”
she said. “It doesn’t matter what I think it reads.” The dairywoman guesses she has about 500 or more poems written in notebooks and loose paper she keeps cherished at her home. “Another author once said, ‘I write because I have to,’” she said. “I totally get it. It’s who I am. Joe is a farmer. We all have our own deal. I write.” Not all of her writing needs to be perfect. “It’s not all good,” Stransky said. “But sometimes it’s good. The good ones are inspired by something that enters my soul, my mind. I feel like I’m not writing them.” Most times, these poems are ones inspired by a life or world event. Examples of this include poems about when President John F. Kennedy was shot, the O.J. Simpson trial, the plane landing in the Hudson River, the London bombing and the I-35 bridge collapse in Minneapolis. Stransky also has put pen to paper about cancer amongst family and friends, her grandkids, old trees, jelly jars, depression and families who have lost loved ones too soon. This includes her own daughter, Dawn, who inspired the front cover image and one of the poems in the book about a half-winged angel. “I often pray by writing,” Stransky said. “And sometimes [when I write] it’s a heart bursting of thanksgiving for life.” A strong belief in God inuences her writing. “There’s a power in the universe

ConĆ&#x;nued from STRANSKY | Page 6 without emotion. It’s Mother Nature at its height. That emotion in me elicited my poetry, my writing.â€? Writing has been a part of her life, Stransky said. In ďƒžfth grade, Stransky wrote her ďƒžrst true poem. “I was walking down the hill towards our farmsite and it came to me,â€? Stransky said. “It just felt right.â€? But her teacher did not think the same way, giving her a failed grade because she believed Stransky could not write the words herself. The F did not deter Stransky. “I’ve carried that poem with me my whole life in my purse,â€? she said. Stransky has channeled her creative spirit in other ways including showing and judging cattle, and coaching kids in 4-H dairy judging. “The moment in the ring ‌ there’s an art to it,â€?
Stransky said about showing. In addition to writing for her own enjoyment, Stransky has had poems published in the Minnesota Holstein News, local newspapers and a regional book of poetry. Her life growing up and working with her family throughout her adult life on a dairy has been woven into her words. She has been inspired by calves being born and farm dogs barking in the middle of the night along with how farming communities come together to support one another during tragic events. One poem featured in the book was written about a local farmer who passed away. Area farmers came together to ďƒžnish the harvest for his widow and young family. “What a gift,â€? Stransky said. “There’s something
in the makeup of the rural American person that responds during times like that ‌â€? In addition to writing poems, Stransky likes to send handwritten letters, thank you notes or other words of encouragement or support to family and friends. “Expressing yourself in words is important, and it’s not a waste of time,â€? Stransky said. While the book Stransky published has a limited number of farm-inspired poems, she plans to release another book in the future based on rural life. It’s part of who she is and her purpose in life. “God gives us all a mission,â€? Stransky said. “He placed in my heart a desire to react to life in words.â€? Even if that desire strikes in the middle of the night.

year, Ahrens got to spend four hours relaxing in the cool tractor, while still getting a lot of work done. “This is a good feeling. I felt lucky,” Ahrens said. “I have never won anything like that before.” The 16 individuals picked 4.5 loads of rock, tennis ball sized and larger, off a 36-acre direct seeded

Ahrens and another tractor driver, Rick Hogrefe, couldn’t believe how much banging they heard in the back trailer. The Ahrens family usually picks rock with a skid-loader and takes turns driving the tractor. “Rock picking is important because it saves on equipment,”
Ahrens said. “I was surprised to see how many rocks they found.” Central Minnesota Credit Union and Dairy Star collaborated 18 years ago to begin the rock-picking contest. “Farmers are always surprised that they get four hours of hard work,” said Kevin Uphoff, Central Minnesota Credit Union employee. “I don’t think farmers expect that.” Each year, employees of CMCU and Dairy Star volunteer time to pick rocks, rather than completing their other daily work responsibilities. “I am surprised at how many people do it every year,” Uphoff said. “Everybody shows back up.” Uphoff has volunteered to pick rocks for at least ve years and each year goes a little different. “We didn’t nd as many rocks, but covered more ground,” Uphoff said about this year’s rock picking. “I think it went a lot better than the farmers were expecting.” Following the picking, the Ahrens treated the pickers with dinner featuring burgers, chips, desserts, salads and refreshments. “It was a good deal. They did a great job,” Ahrens said. “Make time to do it, get registered.”

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in these activities because I have a big heart for agriculture and desire to keep sharing ag literacy with others. I enjoy both activities because they give me the opportunity to share the message of agriculture. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. The 2018 Eau Claire County Farm Machinery and Tractor Safety Program will be 4-7:30 p.m. on May 29-June 1 and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 2 at Fall Creek High School, Agri-Science Room, Fall Creek, Wis. Participants in this course must have had some prior tractor driving experience and be able to show some proďƒžciency in tractor driving or they will not be allowed to continue the course. Youth must be at least 12 years old to take the course; 12 year olds are eligible for a State of Wisconsin Certiďƒžcate. Youth 13 and older are eligible for a Federal Certiďƒžcate on their 14th birthday. The Federal certiďƒžcation allows youth to drive tractors for an employer and State Certiďƒžcation youth may drive tractors for their parents only. Youth involved in hazardous occupations, including farm machinery operations (tractor driving) other than on a farm operated by their parents, must have a Certiďƒžcate of Exemption from these regulations in order to engage in such employment. Milk Equipment Installation & Service Technician This position will assist in the service and installation of state-of-the-art milk harvesting equipment including Lely robotic milking systems. Starting at $17+/hour (based on experience), this full-time position includes benefits of paid vacation and sick leave, 401k and major medical insurance. Our ideal candidate is self-motivated, honest, dependable and friendly, with a strong work ethic. A valid Minnesota driver’s license and good driving record are a must. Plumbing, electrical, refrigeration and/or general equipment maintenance experience are a plus.

There is a full-time position open in this warehouse support area. Our ideal candidate is personable, able to learn quickly, and takes pride in accuracy. Dairy knowledge or experience is a plus.
