Jo-Lane Dairy a double-feature of breeds National Brown Swiss Convention to tour Iowa dairy

LUANA, Iowa – June 28 is circled on the calendars of Lance and Jonna Schutte of Luana, Iowa. On that date, their Jo-Lane Dairy will host a tour associated with the National Brown Swiss Convention.

The convention takes place June 26-28 at Coralville, Iowa, near Iowa City. A second farm visit is also scheduled for June 28 at Hilltop Acres Farm, Calmar, Iowa.

Visitors to the Schutte farm will see a double-feature of dairy cattle.

Along with Lance and Jonna Schuttes’ registered Brown Swiss, they will be able to view some of the farm’s registered Holsteins.

The blend of two breeds happened when Jonna and Lance married.

“He brought Holsteins, and I brought a mixed herd with a lot of Brown Swiss,” Jonna said.

Over the ensuing years, Brown Swiss numbers increased; partly because each of the couple’s children were given a Brown Swiss of their own.

The animals were purchased from the herd of Jonna’s parents, Dennis and Jonna Worden, of Oelwein, Iowa.

Lance and Jonna have four children: Blake, 10, Briella, 7, Breklyn, 5, and Brayton, 17 months.

The Schuttes milk 30 Brown Swiss and 100 Holsteins on Lance’s home farm. Jonna and Lance bought the farm, which has 250 owned and rented acres, in 2009.

The Brown Swiss and Holsteins are milked by a pair of Lely Astronaut robots.

Lance and Jonna had been milking in an older, two-story barn. But each milking took two people about 2.5 hours, due to switching cows in and out.

Milking three times a day worked for a while. But, then the Schuttes had trouble nding employees to make it work. They dropped back to two milkings and eventually decided to give robots a try.

When it comes to milk production, the Schuttes’ Brown Swiss each average 28,000 pounds of milk yearly.

The Swiss also average 1,150 pounds of butterfat and 900 pounds of protein, Lance said.

The Holsteins, meanwhile, are chugging along with a 33,000-pound average, Lance said. The per-cow butterfat and protein numbers are roughly 1,200 and 1,000 pounds, respectively.

dence Hilary, is the Schuttes’ best Brown Swiss, Lance said. Her mammary system has been scored 87 to 90 points, and she has three sons in stud. Hilary was making 120 pounds of milk a day in mid-May. Her fat test then was 4.9 percent and her protein test was 3.7 percent.

In all, Jo-Lane Dairy is home to 10 Excellent Holsteins, 34 classied Very Good and 35 scored Good Plus.

On the Brown Swiss side, the farm has four Excellent cows, 10 Very Good and 11 Good Plus.

When the robots took over the milking, the herd average for both breeds stood in the neighborhood of 29,000 pounds.

Jo-Lane Dairy’s cows average three visits to a robotic milker every 24 hours. That additional milking nudged production up 15 pounds per cow, Lance said.

Along with letting the cows be milked more often, the robots prove their worth in other ways. Jonna said the activity monitor each cow has in a collar around her neck sends information to the robotic system’s computer.

Rumination time is measured as is the amount of time a cow is up and walking. More walking might indicate a cow is coming into heat. Less walking might mean she is sick.

“Heats are now easier to nd and reproduction is better,” Jonna said.

Along with seeing the robotic milkers in action, visitors on the day of the tour can get a look at the Juno robotic feed pusher. Lance said the device is programmed to sweep feed to where the cows can reach it every two hours. Not only does the machine push

up feed when it is supposed to, but it also frees Lance and Jonna from that chore.

The 70- by 240-foot freestall barn has 120 stalls and a pair of automatic cow brushes. It is not unusual to see cows lined up and jockeying for position at the brushes.

Tunnel ventilation keeps the barn cool on the warmest of days. Ceiling insulation helps, too, keeping conditions right for both cows and robots.

The barn uses chain alley scrapers.

They take manure to a pair of pits at the end of the barn. From there, manure gets pumped to a 300,000-gallon lagoon that is emptied twice a year.

Family time is important to the Schuttes. The barn and robots team up to let the Schuttes attend their kids’ ball games and be active in breed associations.

Lance and Jonna are both members of the national and state Brown Swiss organizations. In addition, Jonna is secretary-treasurer of the Iowa Brown Swiss Association. Lance is a member of the Iowa Holstein Association Board and is involved with junior activities for the district group.

June Dairy Month will nd some of the Schutte youngsters exhibiting Brown Swiss calves at the Big Four Fair in Postville, Iowa. The fair is so named, Jonna said, because it encompasses a quartet of counties: Allamakee, Clayton, Fayette and Winneshiek.

Blake showed Brown Swiss heifers at the Iowa State Fair last year. In the open show, he took home the novice award.

Do the Schuttes think they have a future farmer in the family?

“The 5-year-old (Breklyn) says she is a farmer,” Jonna said. “She’s not going to grow up to be one. She already is one.”

An emergency forage option

Late summer oats offer energy source, extends grazing season

MADISON, Wis. – Dairy farmers who employ managed grazing never know when they might need an emergency forage crop during the late summer.

The dreaded summer slump can set in during July or August, turning pastures as brown as a brick.

Making matters worse is the fact that there are not many options for emergency forage crops, because the growing season in much of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa is relatively short.

But University of Wisconsin-Extension forage specialists said oats seeded late in the summer can be an excellent source of energy before winter sets in.

Potentially, fall-grown oats can be used to extend the grazing season, especially throughout October and well into November, when the growth of perennial, cool-season grasses slows, according to the Wisconsin Team Forage.

Oats planted late in the summer will joint, elongate and produce seed heads during the fall. But winter wheat and winter rye sown in late fall stay vegetative and do not produce seed heads during the fall.

The Wisconsin Forage Team suggests this difference in physiology enables oats to enjoy yield advantages over winter wheat and rye. Normally, fall-grown oats will produce more fall forage than wheat by about a two-to-one ratio, regardless of the

weather conditions or harvest date.

Oat plants do eventually winter kill. That means cattle must nish grazing them by the time that happens.

Do not expect any spring regrowth from such a crop of oats. A new oat crop or other forage will need to be planted.

However, the certainty of winterkill might eliminate the need for some herbicides the following spring, according to the Wisconsin Forage Team.

If farmers do want to sow late-summer oats, but still get a forage crop the next spring, one option is to plant a blend of oats and wheat.

This approach might limit the fall forage yield.

But it would permit grazing of the surviving, highquality wheat the following spring, the Wisconsin Forage Team suggested.

Fall-grown oats should be thought of as stockpiled feed for later grazing. Do not worry about overgrazing, rest periods or establishing a grazing schedule. Instead, graze the oats one time, but limit cattle to an area they can eat in a day or two. Set up a single electric wire and move it each day, or according to some other regular schedule, the experts advise.

Grazing can start at various canopy heights.

At the Marsheld Agricultural Research Station, Marsheld, Wis., oats were grazed in 2011 when they stood as much as 39 inches tall. But the next year due to drought, the oats reached a maximum height of just 19 inches.

During that research at Marsheld, 1,100-pound dairy heifers were allowed enough area of oats so they could eat 20 pounds of dry matter each in six hours. They grazed the oats from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and went to the barn after that. There, they were supplemented with a total-mixed ration that was forage based.

Dairy heifers in this trial preferentially grazed leaf tissue, which has better nutritive value compared to the stem. Any decision to reduce the daily forage allocation in an effort to improve pasture utilization must be weighed against the potential for depressing animal performance, suggested the Wisconsin Forage Team.

The specialists said to sow your fall oats during early August in central Wisconsin. Move the seeding up farther south and move it back the farther north a farm is.

That early August seeding in central Wisconsin can be grazed starting the last week in September, during most years. The start of grazing at that time

will coincide with the elongation of the oats plants’ stems after jointing.

The Wisconsin Forage Team suggested fall forage production will likely be less than 50 percent of peak fall yield by that date, although it will continue to increase throughout October.

Be patient with your crop of summer-sown oats.

Do not start grazing it too soon.

Livestock might consume the available pasture too rapidly, without the potential for signicant regrowth. In contrast, delaying the onset of grazing too long may result in forage losses as a result of early snows or other inclement weather, according to the Wisconsin Forage Team.

Do not worry about frost. Fall-grown oats can tolerate numerous frosts, especially if the plants are at the stem elongation stage or boot stage.

Fall forage production will likely be less than 50 percent of peak fall yield by that date, although it will continue to increase throughout October.

Studies at Marsheld suggest that grazing can continue until late November if it’s not prohibited by extensive snow cover. The plants mature very slowly after mid-October, according to the Wisconsin Forage Team.

The specialists said fall-grown oats for forage commonly has less lignin in it. That is because of the cooler growing conditions and the fact that shorter days disrupt the oats’ maturation.

With less lignin, oats are more likely to lodge when it snows.

The Wisconsin Forage Team suggested this will not prevent grazing, but it might reduce the utilization of the forage.

And it will keep farmers from making silage out of the rest of the forage. There is a silver lining to the oats containing less lignin.

The forage team said lignin is indigestible and serves as a major impediment to ber digestion in ruminants. Therefore, the risks associated with lodging due to snow are offset somewhat by improved ber digestibility and more energy in the forage.

Researcher follows dairy cows’ greenhouse gas footprints Sometimes dairy scientist Michel Wattiaux approaches his research like a cop at a trafc stop. He uses a breath analyzer to check for problematic products of fermentation.

Last spring, the University of Wisconsin–Madison researcher began using a specialized device to measure the methane being exhaled or belched by a group of Holsteins and Jerseys. It was the rst step in an ongoing study by dairy scientists, engineers and agronomists to see how a cow’s breed and forage consumption affect the greenhouse gases generated by her gut and her manure.

Greenhouse gases, which collect in the atmosphere and trap the sun’s radiation, are a big issue for the dairy industry. Methane is a concern because it’s particularly potent — it traps about 30 times as much radiation as carbon dioxide does — and a cow generates a lot of it in her rumen, the huge stomach chamber where microbes are fermenting as much as 200 lbs. of plant material. Also worrisome is nitrous oxide, another potent greenhouse gas that is emitted from manure during storage and after it’s spread in the eld.

The U.S. dairy industry has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by the year 2020, and UW–Madison researchers are helping identify strategies to accomplish that.

Sampling the cows’ breath was the rst in a sequence of experiments designed to measure greenhouse gas emissions at three critical points: from the cow’s breath, from her manure during storage, and from the eld where her manure is spread. The researchers are looking at how three variables — breed of cow, type of silage fed, and relative levels of forage in the diet — affect greenhouse

gas emissions at each point.

While versions of each of these experiments have been done on a standalone basis on the UW–Madison campus, Wattiaux says this is the rst time the three have been integrated so that emissions originating from a cow and her manure can be tracked from barn to manure storage to eld.

“This is the rst time where we do the nutrition part, the manure storage part and the eld application part sequentially, and then put it all together to give the Wisconsin dairy industry a solid number for how much methane and nitrous oxide comes out of their farms depending on the breed, the kind of diet and the amount of forage in the diet,” he says.

For the rst experiment, which began in June and ran for four months, researchers fed 24 Holsteins and Jerseys a ration that included either alfalfa silage or corn silage, the two primary forages fed on Wisconsin dairy farms, along with some grain. Some cows were fed high levels of forage relative to grain, while others got less silage and more grain. Researchers periodically sampled each cow’s exhaled breath using the GreenFeed system, an analytical tool designed to determine daily methane emission.

“It drops a bit of sweet feed to entice her to stick her nose up to it,” Wattiaux explains. “The equipment sucks the air in, measures airow, measures the concentration of methane and then estimates the amount of methane.”

In the second experiment, the manure from the cows was collected and held in barrels for two months to simulate manure storage on a dairy farm. Graduate student Elias Uddin collaborated with biological systems engi-

neering professor Rebecca Larson to measure emissions of both methane and nitrous oxide from each barrel for 60 days.

The third experiment began at the end of October to simulate the post-harvest manure spreading typical of many Wisconsin farms. Researchers applied the stored manure to 24 eld plots at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station. Under the supervision of agronomists Greg Sandford and Randy Jackson, a team of students began monitoring emissions from the plots last fall and will resume this spring.

Wattiaux believes that the ndings from this research will be useful to scientists who create whole-farm decision models that producers use to predict the outcome of various management practices. He likens it to software such as Wisconsin’s SnapPlus, which farmers use to minimize soil and nutrient loss from their elds.

“In SnapPlus, you provide the eld characteristics such as location and slope and crop management practices, and the model gives your ‘T’, your tolerable soil loss, so you can make sure you stay below that,” he says. “I think we’re going the same direction with this research.

A model might calculate a tolerable level of greenhouse gas emissions and provide information on how to stay below that total by adopting new techniques in the eld, new techniques in storage and new techniques in feeding.”

This work was funded by a Hatch grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and through the USDA NIFA Coordinated Agricultural Projects program (Dairy CAP).

Stronger milk prices ahead

Increase anticipated for end of 2018, into 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Milk prices are expected to strengthen for the rest of this year. And there is more good news for dairy farmers: Those higher milk prices look like they will carry over into next year, is according to the May “Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook� report that was released by the United States Department of Agriculture May 16.

Economists with the Economic Research Service (ERS) compile the report each month.

The expected price strength is based on the all-milk price. It is projected to rise by 50 to 60 cents per hundredweight (cwt.) as this year plays out.

If it does indeed rise that much, the all-milk price for 2018 would reach somewhere in the range of $16.20 to $16.70, according to the ERS. For next year, ERS economists see the 2019 all-milk price building into a range of $16.25 to $17.25 per cwt.

Less growth in milk production is behind the expectation for higher all-milk prices. The ERS said its looks for a modest increase of just 1.3 percent in milk production next year, from this year.

The 2019 milk production forecast from the ERS is 221.5 billion pounds.

An outlook for higher-than-expected exports of dairy products and ingredients is also behind the all-milk price rise. Other factors are the expectation for less milk being produced in 2019, recent rises in the prices of dairy products, and lowerthan expected stocks of dairy products at the end

of this year’s ďƒžrst quarter.

The ERS report offers two examples of more dairy products being sold to other countries.

In March, commercial exports on a skim-solids milk-equivalent basis reached a record high of 4.255 billion pounds, according to the May outlook report. Exports, on a milk-fat milk-equivalent, basis reached 996 million pounds, the highest level since July 2014.�

For the week that ended May 5, the wholesale prices of most dairy products climbed, according to the ERS. The exception was a three-cent fall in the price of 500-pound barrels of cheddar cheese.

The largest change was a 12.6 cent increase for the butter price, said the report.

The wholesale butter price ďƒžnished at $2.3396 per pound May 5. That was an increase of 12.62 cents from the March 31 price of $2.2134.

Wholesale price for cheddar cheese climbed, too. On May 5, 40-pound blocks fetched a closing price of $1.6405 per pound. That was an increase of 0.0452 cents from the March 31 price of $1.5953 per pound.

Nonfat dry milk, on the wholesale level, brought 76.31 cents per pound May 5. That was up 6.99 cents from the March 31 price of 69.32 cents per pound.

Wholesale prices for dry whey followed suit.

They ended at 26.92 cents per pound May 5, a bump up of 1.07 cents. On March 31, dry whey brought 25.85 cents per pound.

On May 5, the price of 500-pound barrels of cheddar cheese stood at $1.6405 per pound. That was a decrease of 4.52 cents from $1.5472 on March 31.

Helping boost the outlook for higher milk prices is the fact that dairy cow slaughter rates continue above last year, said the ERS. The United States was home to 9.04 million dairy cows in March, 2,000 fewer than in February.

In part to the size of the U.S. milking herd shrinking slightly in March, the annual cow estimate has been lowered by 5,000 head to 9.41 million.

Helping counter those fewer cows was higher milk production per cow. This past March stood at 2,019 pounds. That was 1.1 percent more than in March of 2017.

U.S. milk production has continued to grow, but the year-over-year growth rate has been declining, the ERS report said. In March, the yearover-year growth rate was 1.3 percent, lower than 1.7 and 1.6 percent in January and February, respectively.�

Forecasts of higher feed prices have dampened expectations for milk production increases.

The ERS said it now looks for milk per cow to average 23,240 pounds for 2018.

That, in turn, has lowered milk production forecast to 218.7 billion pounds for this year. That is 0.3 billion pounds lower than the previous forecast.

Turning to next year, the ERS said the size of the U.S. milking herd will be the same as the prediction for 2018.

Milk per cow, however, is expected to continue to grow, averaging 23,535 pounds for 2019, according the outlook report. Milk production for 2019 is projected at 221.5 billion pounds, a modest 1.3 percent increase from the 2018 forecast.

Growth is expected in other livestock sectors besides dairy. For example, beef production should rise by 1.8 percent this year, according to the ERS. The dairy industry, in 2016, accounted for 5.7 billion pounds of U.S. beef, by way of cull cows and feeder cattle, according to Brenda Boetel, an agricultural economist at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Those dairy cattle made up 22.7 percent of the beef supply.

Gears reversed in the May 15 Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction. The weighted average of products offered rose 1.9 percent, following a 1.1 slip on May 1. Anhydrous milkfat led the climb, up 5.8 percent, following a 1.9 percent dip on May 1. Cheddar was up 4.4 percent, following a 3.1 percent advance, and skim milk powder was up 3.0 percent, after it advanced 3.6 percent last time. Butter rounded out the gains, up 2.4 percent. It was unchanged in the last event.

Rennet casein was down 6.1 percent, after it plunged 10.5 percent last time, and lactose was down 3.5 percent, after inching 0.6 percent higher.

FC Stone equates the GDT 80 percent butterfat butter price to $2.5607 per pound U.S. CME butter closed Friday at $2.3850. GDT Cheddar equated to $1.9072 per pound U.S. and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.5825. GDT skim milk powder averaged 92.87 cents per pound and whole milk powder averaged $1.4634. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk closed at 85 1/4-cents per pound.

Meanwhile; March U.S. dairy exports set a new record, up 26.8 percent on a milk equivalent basis.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski wrote in his May 14 Early Morning Update that commercial disappearance shows very good overall demand for cheese to round out First Quarter and fewer imports than last year.

American cheese demand in March was 6.6 percent above a year ago and up 3.2 percent versus previous-month levels. Demand for the other cheese increased 3.3 percent from 2017 and 4.1 percent higher than month-earlier levels. Total cheese use was up 4.6 percent from a year ago and 3.8 percent above April. American cheese use was 2.7 percent higher and other than American cheese use is up 3.7 percent, which put total cheese use 3.3 percent higher, according to the Update. Cheddar exports are at a four year high.

Nonfat dry milk use rose 1.8 percent in March and butter demand was 1.96 percent higher. On a month-to-month basis, commercial disappearance of butter increased 20.1 percent, while nonfat dry milk use lost 2.1 percent. But, 2018 nonfat dry milk use so far is up 19.2 percent, while butter use is up 5.8 percent.

Kurzawski, in the May 14 Dairy Radio Now interview, attributed the encouraging data to U.S. prices being competitive on the world market. He said U.S. prices have been below EU and Oceania prices

for some time but the real story is global demand as a whole. He expects First Quarter global imports will be up 7-8 percent, which would be the fastest growth since 2014.

Unlike 2014, it’s not all being driven by China, he explained, and is in fact being driven by countries other than China. He called it a strong global growth story for dairy products that has hit at a time when dairy farmers need it to hit but also it came at a time when no one really expected it.

Kurzawski admits that the spring ush is providing plenty of milk but; We’ve got really good demand and it will ebb and ow; we have big policy issues on the table right now, but it doesn’t seem to be changing good global growth.

Mid-May cheese prices headed south as traders absorbed the week’s GDT and awaited Friday afternoon’s April Milk Production report. The blocks closed that morning at $1.5825 per pound, down a nickel on the week, 8 3/4-cents below a year ago, and the lowest CME price in six weeks. The barrels closed at $1.5325, down 8 3/4-cents on the week but 6 1/4-cents above a year ago. There were 7 cars of block sold on the week at the CME and 32 of barrel.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski pointed out in his May 14 Early Morning Update that it seems to us that the market wants to fall on supply news, and wants to rise on demand news. So, determining which of those will run the minds of traders during any particular week, we think, will go a long way to understanding what the price direction of that week will be.

Dairy Market News reports that cheese orders have picked up. Historically, this time period is a lull for cheese buying, particularly in the mozzarella provolone sector. However, contacts suggest stable markets have stirred a little more interest recently.

Milk remains discounted and, as Memorial Day nears, cheese producers are expecting even more spot milk availability in the near term.

Western cheese demand is currently solid, according to DMN. Sales in both the domestic and international markets are good. U.S. cheese prices are competitive in the international market as the value of the dollar is down. Market participants report that some buyers are purchasing more cheese to secure the stocks they need as they are concerned that prices might further increase. Cheese production is strong in that milk continues to be readily available and most plants are running near full capacity.

Inventories are abundant, according to DMN.

CME butter saw a Friday nish at $2.3850 per pound, 5 cents higher on the week, a penny above a year ago, and the highest price since October 18, 2017, with 61 cars exchanging hands on the week.

Churning continues for Midwestern and central butter producers. Cream availability varies. Butter sales continue to impress contacts and inventories are generally balanced, according to DMN. Interest continues to favor the unsalted variety. Some contacts have shared that market prices have yet to affect retail prices, but likely this summer will see butter prices increase.

Western butter makers report buyer interest is rm, including inquiries from international shoppers. Retail sales are solid and in some cases, manufacturers suggest the demand for butter is stronger than expected for this time of year. Butter production is active. Although ice cream and other dairy products are starting to draw heavier amounts of cream, there is plenty of cream for the churns. Inventories are generally in balance, kept in check by heathy demand and steady production.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed the week a quarter-cent higher, at 85 1/4- cents per pound, highest since September 5, 2017, but that’s 6 1/4-cents below that week a year ago, with 14 cars nding new homes on the week at the CME. Rising U.S. powder prices are impacting purchases. The May 11 Dairy and Food Market Analyst (DFMA) newsletter stated that Buyers from Mexico are reportedly having a hard time with the recent uptick in USA milk powder prices, which are still above prices in Europe, and are asking for powder that is either under-grade or off-specication; anything at a discount. The DFMA adds that those with price-negative views suspect some of the aged European milk powder will soon land south of the USA. Speaking of aged powder; the EU commission sold about 92.5 million pounds of skim milk powder out of intervention this week with a minimum price of about 62 cents per pound. Last month’s tender moved about 52.9 million pounds.

Cash dry whey closed Friday at 37 cents per pound, up 4 1/2-cents on the week and the highest price since it began trading on the CME on March 12, 2018.

Meanwhile; restaurant sales remain a very important part of dairy product disappearance whether it’s a McDonalds switching to butter or a Pizza Hut adding more cheese to its pizzas.

DFMA analyst and editor, Jerry Dryer, reported in the May 21 Dairy radio Now broadcast the latest Census Bureau data, which monitors total food service and fast food sales. That is where a lot of cheese is consumed, according to Dryer, at outlets like McDonalds, Wendy’s, and Arby’s.

months, he said, but that wasn’t the growth we saw a year ago. Because we had such good growth last year, we may not do quite that well this year, Dryer explained. He adds that, over the two year period, food service sales were up almost 8 percent so that is a nice growth rate.

Things were less exciting in the fast food business, up less than 1 percent during First Quarter, he said, but it looks like it may be recovering in March.

“The data is interesting,” he said, “but we need to consider that McDonald’s First Quarter sales were up more than 5 percent and Domino’s was up more than 8 percent. Both use a lot of dairy products.”

Additionally, Dryer says the census data probably isn’t capturing everything that is going on out there. Things have changed and people are buying Grab N Go kinds of items out of service stations, super markets, and drug stores, places that don’t get counted as food service sales so that may mean the numbers aren’t fully reecting what’s going on, he concluded.

USDA’s latest Crop Progress report shows 69 percent of U.S. corn is now in the ground, as of the week ending May 13. That compares to 68 percent a year ago and 63 percent in the ve year average. The week showed 28 percent emerged, down 1 percent from a year ago and 1 percent behind the ve year average.

The report also shows 35 percent of the soybeans have been planted, up from 29 percent a year ago and compares to 26 percent in the ve year average. Cotton planting is at 36 percent, up from 31 percent a year ago and matched ve year average for that week.

The Agriculture Department’s latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook reports that feed prices continue to rise. In March, the 16-percent protein feed value, as calculated by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, was $7.91 per hundredweight (cwt). It has risen each month since November, when it was $7.13 per cwt. While feed prices have risen, the all-milk price has fallen from $18.20 per cwt in November to $15.30 in February before rising slightly to $15.60 in March. With rising feed prices and relatively low milk prices, the milk-feed ratio fell to 1.97 in March, the lowest point since June 2016, according to the Outlook.

Feed price forecasts for 2017/18 were raised from last month. Corn and soybean meal is projected at $3.25-$3.55 per bushel and $360 per short ton, respectively. The alfalfa hay price in March was $166 per short ton, $11 higher than February and $32 higher than March of last year. The average corn price for 2018/19 is expected to be $3.30-$4.30 per bushel, 40 cents higher than the 2017/18 estimate at the midpoint. The 2018/19 average soybean meal is projected at $330- $370 per short ton, $10 lower than the 2017/18 estimate at the midpoint.

Dairy margins continued to improve over the rst half of May with rising milk prices as feed costs held mostly steady, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. While margins are only slightly above average from a historical perspective, they are still projected positive with the exception of spot Second Quarter, the MW stated. Milk prices have been supported by strong export demand, with 17.3 percent of milk solids exported in March on the back of 17.2 percent in February.

For First Quarter, U.S. exports of 16.1 percent of total milk solids produced represented a good step towards the U.S. Dairy Export Council’s goal of reaching the 20 percent mark by 2020. Strong demand from the MENA region (Middle East, North Africa) in particular with surging oil prices has helped although there are headwinds on the horizon.

Recent U.S. dollar strength and potential tariff issues moving forward will present a challenge for dairy exporters over the medium to longer term.

USDA released their May WASDE report, which lowered the 2018 milk production forecast on reduced cow numbers and slow growth in milk per cow. At the same time, exports were raised from April on both a fat and skim-solids basis on strong global demand.

On the feed side, USDA released the rst 201819 new-crop balance sheet which featured sharply lower ending stocks projections for both corn and soybeans due to reduced acreage and production this season. New-crop corn ending stocks are projected at 1.682 billion bushels, down 500 million from the current year, while soybean ending stocks

are estimated at 415 million which would be down from 530 million this year. Both gures were lower than trade estimates, but recent advances in planting progress have limited the market’s reaction, the MW concludes.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted seven requests for export assistance this week from member cooperatives that have contracts to sell 709,889 pounds of cheese and 440,925 pounds of butter, to customers in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

The product has been contracted for delivery from June through October and puts CWT’s 2018 exports at 34.776 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 10.593 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 923,737 pounds of whole milk powder to 25 countries on ve continents.

In politics, there’s another fake milk to compete with. That’s according to the National Milk Produc-

ers Federation (NMPF). A Federation press release charged that Swedish food company Oatly, whose powdered, grass-based beverage is sold in Europe and across the United States, should respect U.S. food labeling standards that restrict the use of the term milk to real dairy products.

NMPF says that Oatly is exploiting a lax regulatory environment in the United States to mislabel its imitation dairy product and criticized Oatly for complaining to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month that it would be placed at a disadvantage if it could not call its product oat milk, even though it is not called oat milk anywhere except in the United States, not even in Sweden.

“It takes a lot of gall to complain to FDA that your company would be harmed by calling its product exactly what it’s already been labeled for years in its home market,” said NMPF’s Jim Mulhern. “It’s been sold as an oat drink, which is exactly what it is, since it was rst introduced in Sweden.”

Machinery Pete, Vince Biegel coming to Farm Tech Days The Wood County Farm Technology Days planning committee has announced several new additions to its speaker line-up for this summer’s farm show. Greg Peterson of Farm Journal Media and Green Bay Packer linebacker Vince Biegel will each make appearances during the event, being held near Marsheld on July 10-12.

Peterson, who’s known as ‘Machinery Pete,’ will give a presentation on the sales trends in the used farm equipment market. His program is scheduled to take place in the Rural Mutual Insurance Family Living Tent on Thursday, July 12th. He will also be available to meet with farmers in person at the Cloverdale Equipment booth, which is sponsoring Machinery Pete’s trip to the show.

A native of Wood County, Biegel grew up on a cranberry marsh near Wisconsin Rapids where he and his siblings are the fth generation to have worked the farm.

He credits much of his success in sports to the marsh, saying it taught him the value of hard work.

Biegel was drafted by the Packers in 2017 and is also a former standout for the

Wisconsin Badgers. He will spend his time at the show meeting fans and signing autographs in the Land O’Lakes Future Generations area.

Attendees will also get to see ‘Grillologists’ Mad Dog & Merrill, who will entertain and educate backyard enthusiasts with the ner points of grilling. And the newly crowned Alice in Dairyland will meet showgoers during all three days of the event.

Laos Buffalo Dairy is sole of its kind

LUANG PRABANG, Laos, Asia – Often when individuals converge to develop a common goal, the results are heightened due to the aid of one another. At Laos Buffalo Dairy, the joint venture of two families has resulted in a successful water buffalo dairy that is providing income for local farmers as well as supplying dairy products for the community.

“Laos Buffalo Dairy is a rst of its kind in Laos and a joint venture between two

families, neither of whom had any background in dairy or agriculture,” Susie Martin said. “We had seen buffalos producing milk and tasted delicious yogurt made from buffalo milk, when as friends we all traveled to Sri-Lanka together. When we moved to Laos, effectively for our midlife crisis, … (we) discovered there was no culture of milking anything, buffalo, goats or cows, in Laos and that milk was just not part of the diet.”

Laos Buffalo Dairy was formed in 2016 by co-founders Martin, Rachel O’Shea and Steven McWhirter. The farm is situated near Luang Prabang in northern Laos of Southeast Asia.

agement of the tourism sector of the farm. McWhirter is the general manager of the farm; O’Shea manages the production facility and the café and is the head chef responsible for cheese production. The trio work six days a week and are aided by a local farm manager who oversees 30 employees.

The friends saw a need for dairy production in Laos.

“Most of our Laos friends didn’t know what yogurt was, and if they did, they thought it came from fruit as they had seen pictures of fruit on the packaging,” Martin said.

After learning how to milk a water buffalo from a YouTube video, the group approached a water buffalo farmer with the prospect of milking his buffalo cow.

“The rst buffalo a farmer said we could try to milk, we asked when she had calved and he said ‘She hasn’t,’” Martin said. “They just didn’t understand the connection between calving and milking.”

The dairy consists of 25 water buffalo and 11 Murrah Buffalo. The animals are rented from local farmers.

Then she joins the tourism sector of the farm with her calf for one month before being returned to the farmer as a bred cow.

“In Laos, up to 50 percent of calves born in the villages die; however, on our farm that number is less than 10 percent, so if a farmer brings his buffalo to our farm the chances of their calf surviving and thriving are greatly improved,” Martin said.

The herd is milked two times a day (6 a.m. and 5 p.m.) in a walk-through system.

“It’s safer for our animals and team as our buffalo all have horns, so to keep them separate is both safer and more efcient as their milk let down is different,” Martin said of the milking system. “… They’re not born or bred on a farm so they react differ-

The milk is processed on the farm to make mozzarella, ricotta, feta, yogurt, blue cheese and ice cream. The dairy products are sold directly to the consumer.

“We’ve had to experiment and adapt cow recipes to work with the buffalo milk,” Martin said.

The farm rents land to

local farmers to feed the buffalo while in their care. Martin said rice is the dominant crop in Laos with corn, cassava, bananas and coffee also being grown.

In conjunction with the Laos government, the Laos Buffalo Dairy has implemented a breeding program between the local swamp, or water, buffalo and the Murrah buffalo, a high milk producing breed.

“The other benet of this program for local farmers is the overall improvement in genetics in local village herds which have been adversely affected by in-breeding over the last 30 years,” Martin said.

Male buffalo are used for meat and plowing the land in the country, and Martin said they are a valuable asset for farmers, selling for $1,200.

However, Martin said the animals walk around in the villages and surrounding forests to look for their own food.

Disease is widespread with limited availability to vaccines and veterinary care.

“It can take many years to build up a herd,” she said.

In Laos, there is no dairy infrastructure. Martin said they can receive support from a distributor in Thailand if needed. There is one dairy

farm near the capital city of Vientiane, milking cows imported from Australia.

Martin said Southeast Asia is expanding and more people are realizing the nutritional benets of dairy.

“Growing the business so it’s completely sustainable and capable of milking 200 buffalo per day,” Martin said of the farm’s goal.

She said by the end of 2018, the farm hopes to be able to support the co-founders’ families as well as the full-time staff it employs.

Being the sole water buffalo dairy in the country, Laos Buffalo Dairy has been providing a multitude of benets and will continue to do so in the future. “… Our business is giving farmers a rental income they never had before for their female buffalo; improved health of their animals due to our vaccination and feeding program; better genetics in the local buffalo population; the training program for lo-

A day in the life of Moss Dairy Herd check, planting part of May 18 schedule

LUVERNE, Minn. – Every day is busy at Moss Dairy, but May 18 was especially hectic.

Moss Dairy is operated by brothers Neal and Jacob Moss and Jacob’s son, Justin. Moss Dairy is home to 650 cows, 580 of which are in milk. The Moss family operates 1,000 acres, which includes pasture.

Justin had been in the barn since 5:30 a.m.

“Every Thursday we have our vet come out to do [pregnancy] checks and a herd heath check, so I

got here early to get things ready,” Justin said.

The morning’s bovine healthcare activities had included numerous postpartum checkups and a displaced abomasum repair.

Neal and Justin assisted Dr. Ahern Lafollette of the Edgerton Vet Clinic examine a cow that had given birth to twins during the night.

“This cow is on her eighth lactation and is 10 years old, but she’s still doing the job for us,” Justin said. “Her twins were both heifers. We hardly ever get that lucky.”

After xing the fountain, Justin stopped to chat briey with his father. The Mosses keep their close-up and fresh cows on a bedding pack made of corn stalks. Jacob was loading used bedding pack into a manure spreader and applying it on a nearby eld.

“It’s been a cold and wet spring,” Jacob said. “We were nally able to put some of our heifers onto pasture a few days ago.

There’s nothing better than the sight of cattle grazing on lush, green grass.”

Justin then popped into the milking parlor to give instructions to a member of their milking crew.

Cows are milked three times a day in a double-12 parlor by seven fulltime employees.

Justin hopped into his pickup and drove to one of the Moss’ farmsteads to help Neal with corn planter preparations. On the way, he stopped to inspect a newly-seeded eld of alfalfa.

like it will always give you trouble on the rst day of planting,” Neal said.

Neal took the planter to the headland of a nearby eld as Justin followed in an ATV. Neal dropped the planter into the ground, drove for a few yards, then stopped. Neal and Justin knelt on the ground as they checked on furrow depth and seed placement.

Satised that the planter was working properly, Neal resumed planting. Justin drove his ATV back to the farmstead. He went into the hoop barn where they keep their newborn calves and carried buckets of water to their 60 baby bovines.

“Today is the last day of school for our oldest daughter, Brooklynn,” Justin said as he watered the calves. “She announced that she wanted a job this summer, so I think we’ll put her to work on the farm. It would be nice to have an JERRY NELSON/DAIRY STAR extra pair of hands around here.”

season had begun, and Justin told Daci he would try to make it into Edgerton to watch their daughters play in that evening’s game.

After giving the small group of young heifers on his farmstead buckets of grain, Justin headed back to the eld. The corn planter was not moving and Neal was working on the machine. Justin helped him

Justin scrambled up the ladder that leads to the cab of their four-wheel-drive tractor hitched to a eld cultivator. Minutes later, he began to prepare another of their elds for corn planting. He kept an eye on the time so he would not miss the softball game.

“We just do whatever it

takes to keep this farm running,” Justin said. “I like it that no two days are ever alike. Plus, I get to work with my family.”

Jacob agreed.

“We are doing this all for our family,” Jacob said.

Tilderquist footwear displayed on local shoe company’s wall of honor

WELCH, Minn. – Every morning, Eric Tilderquist laces up his boots from Red Wing Shoes and makes his way to the barn for chores. Unless he manages to take a rare day off, he and his boots trudge through the daily work – anything from milking cows and feeding calves to planting or harvesting crops – of his family’s 152-cow dairy near Welch, Minn.

“I wear them until they’re junk,” Eric said.

“Usually they’re so bad by the end they’re in two pieces.”

This dedication to his work and brand of shoe earned Eric recognition on the shoe company’s wall of honor at its headquarters in Red Wing, Minn.

The wall is our enduring monument to people in the trades, and the work they elevate to an inspiring level, said the company’s website.

Each year about 500 submissions are made for the chance for someone’s shoes to be displayed on the wall; however, only a few dozen are chosen. In 2018, Eric was one of the selected stories to share.

Usually, the honor includes having the individual’s shoes hanging in the store. Because of the used condition of Eric’s boots, they hung a pair of boots worn by his Grandpa Conely.

“They were hanging in the pumphouse in almost perfect condition,” Eric said about the shoes that most likely originated from the mid 1950s. “They

Eric’s boots have helped him milk cows, carry calves and check on elds – through all seasons of the year.

“I usually put them on before the sun comes up and don’t take them off for the 16 hours a day I work,” Eric said. “And I take them off for two hours on Sunday to go grocery shopping with the family.”

The poem also talks about how the boots carry on the work from previous generations, and one day one of the Tilderquist kids might be a seventh generation on the dairy. Eric and Mandy have four children: Max, 10, Maggie, 9, Hank, 8, and Jack, 6.

The Tilderquist family farm was established in 1856 when the rst generation, P.O. Tilderquist, homesteaded the farm.

“The deed has [President] Lincoln’s signature on it,” Mandie said.

The farm evolved over the years, adding buildings and equipment when needed. In the earlier years, the Tilderquist ancestors used nails to mark the year a building was constructed.

One highlight came in 1956, when Eric’s grandpa put in one of the rst parlors in the area.

Eric joined the farm in 1998 after graduating from high school and working on another dairy for a few months. Since then, he has been farming together with his uncle, Paul.

When Mandie joined the family, she quickly learned the dedication it takes to be a dairy farmer. The day after they were married Eric had returned to doing farmwork, and on their rst Christmas, he tended to the cows, too.

“I quickly realized it’s not about

you,” said Mandie, who did not grow up on a farm. “There are bigger things that need to be done. There’s a lot of responsibility on a farm.”

Eric does admit to missing out on events.

“I can’t go shing with my kids or do things like that, but there is a difference between quantity and quality,” he said. “It’s bring your child to work every day on the farm.”

The couple said their children have embraced and love the farm life.

“You can be with family and you can teach your kids a good work ethic,” Mandie said about some of the greatest aspects of dairy farming.

“Kids learn about the realities of life.”

The Tilderquists said it is meaningful they get to be the sixth generation on their family’s dairy.

“It’s pretty special because most farms don’t last six generations or they have to go on their own,” Mandie said.

Some days, Eric feels the pressure of being in this position; however, he enjoys all that the career gives him.

“You get to do a variety of jobs, be outside and be your own boss,” he said.

Although the tough dairy economy can be nancially challenging, the Tilderquists try not to let it get them down. They rely on their trust in God and show trust through faith-based phrases written on their silos.

“Dairy farming tests your faith,” Mandie said. “You have to have faith God has something bigger. I think it’s why our farm has been successful.”

With their faith, dedication and boots, the Tilderquists keep on farming.

Candidates sought for 65th Iowa Dairy Princess Midwest Dairy’s Iowa Division is seeking candidates to serve as Iowa’s 65th Dairy Princess. The entry deadline is July 1.

The Iowa Dairy Princess serves as the ofcial goodwill ambassador for the state’s dairy industry, helping communicate with people about dairy farmers’ stewardship for animals and natural resources, the safety and wholesomeness of dairy products, and the economic importance of dairy to Iowa’s economy.

Eligible candidates include young women from 17 to 24 years old from active Iowa dairy farms, who work on a dairy farm, or whose parents are employees of an Iowa dairy farm. Candidates must also have completed their junior year of high school.

Young women who live in counties with a dairy promotion board princess contest must be nominated through their county program. However, candidates who live in counties without an active princess contest can submit an application to represent their own county. Potential candidates can learn more about the contest and dairy princess program at the Dairy Iowa Youth Communications Workshop to be held Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the Heartland Acres Agribition Center in Independence, Iowa. The session will include an interactive workshop for high school and college students and an overview of the state princess contest. Judging will be held Aug. 7-8, 2018, in Ankeny, Iowa. Selection is based on communications skills, general knowledge of the dairy industry and enthusiasm for dairy promotion. The 65th Iowa State Dairy Princess will be crowned Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Multi-Media Center of the Cattle Barn at the state fairgrounds in Des Moines.

The 2018-19 Iowa Dairy Princess and Alternate will both receive $1,000 scholarships from Midwest Dairy Iowa Division.

American Guernsey Association institutes special registration rates The board of directors for the American Guernsey Association has implemented special registration rates beginning immediately and running through September 1, 2018.

“We realize everyone is struggling with milk check challenges right now, and because the demand for Guernseys continues to increase, the board believes it is in their member’s and Guernsey enthusiasts best interest to help by restructuring fees now through September 1, 2018,” said Doug Granitz, CEO and Executive Secretary of the American Guernsey Association.

Starting immediately, all Total Performance Evaluation (TPE) members registrations, regardless of animal age, will be $15. Non-TPE but AGA members will be $20 across the board and non-AGA members can join the AGA for a $25 fee and get the non-TPE member rate of $20 to register their Guernseys, any age from now through September 1, 2018.

Also instituted were transfer fee changes. Transfers dated under 60 days will be $10 while over 60 days are $15.

These fees are effective immediately and will run through September 1, 2018. All Guernsey owners are encouraged to get their registrations and transfers caught up to date over the next several months to capitalize on these special rates.

Skyview Dairy wins the 2018 Dairy Appreciation Award The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) will honor Skyview Dairy of Hutchinson, Minn., as recipients of the 2018 Dairy Appreciation Award. The family dairy was recognized with the award April 19.

Skyview Dairy Farm is a family owned and operated dairy farm that has been in continuous operation since 1968. Daryl Luthens started the business with seven cows, and today he and his four sons manage a milking herd of 1,150 cows. They employ a staff of 19 people and make it their mission to give each cow their undivided attention as if she were their only cow. Their proximity to campus (roughly 60 miles outside the Twin Cities) combined with their tradition of excellence has made them a high-quality partner for the University of Minnesota.

“The thing that stands us apart from other dairy farms is the fact that we are pretty open book and we don’t have anything to hide,” says Garrett Luthens, one of Daryl’s sons. “Our attitude is that nothing is ever good enough—we can always improve how we do things.” According to Luthens, CVM students who visit Skyview to observe and critique how the farm operates have helped the farm’s practices and procedures. “Come out and say something,” he says. “Show us something we could be doing better!”

Skyview Dairy has helped improve dairy health worldwide by supporting the College’s DVM teaching and research programs. They have participated in multiple applied research studies and have acted as a host for herd investigations performed with our students as part of our ‘Advanced Dairy Production Medicine’ rotations. “Having supportive dairies like this is incredibly important to successfully achieving our mission,” says Sandra Godden, DVM, DVSc, professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine.

The Dairy Appreciation Award is presented at the Annual Minnesota Dairy Health Conference each spring, in recognition of producers who have made outstanding contributions to the Minnesota dairy industry and for supporting teaching, research, or outreach missions at the College of Veterinary Medicine. The 2018 conference was held April 18-19 at the Continuing Education and Conference Center on the U of M’s Twin Cities campus in St. Paul.

USDA seeks feedback from growers about 2018 crops, stocks, livestock inventories and values During the next several weeks, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will conduct two major mid-year surveys, the June Agricultural Survey and the June Area Survey. The agency will contact nearly 4,500 producers across Minnesota to determine crop acreage and stock levels as of June 1, 2018.

“Two of the most important and well-known surveys NASS conducts are the June Agricultural Survey and June Area Survey, due to the widespread and signicant impact of their results,” explained Dan Lofthus, director of the NASS Minnesota Field Ofce.

“When growers respond to these surveys, they provide essential information that helps determine the expected acreage and supply of major commodities in the United States for the 2018 crop year. Results of this survey are used by farmers and ranchers, USDA, businesses, exporters, researchers, economists, policymakers, and others who use the survey information in making a wide range of decisions that benet you as a producer.”

Data for the June Agricultural Surveys are gathered by NASS via the Internet, mail, phone, or via in-person interview. For the June Area Survey, trained NASDA enumerators representing NASS visit select tracts of land and interview the operators of any farm or ranch within that selected tract. Growers are asked to provide information on planted and harvested acreage – including acreage for biotech crops - and grain stocks. Additionally, the survey collects data on livestock inventory, cash rents, land values, and value of sales.

“NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents and publishes only state- and national-level data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identied,” stated Lofthus. “We recognize this is a hectic time for farmers and ranchers, but the information they provide helps U.S. agriculture remain viable and capable. I urge them to respond to these surveys and thank them for their cooperation,” said Lofthus.

NASS will analyze the survey information and publish the results in a series of USDA reports, including the annual Acreage and quarterly Grain Stocks reports, both to be released June 29, 2018. Survey data also contribute to NASS’s monthly and annual Crop Production reports, the annual Small Grains Summary, the annual Farms and Land in Farms and Land Values reports, various livestock reports, including Cattle, Sheep and Goats, and Hogs and Pigs, and USDA’s monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates.

We plowed under some of the alfalfa that had winterkill. We seeded that with corn today. We planted corn May 15-17. RAINFALL Fifty-percent of the corn TOTALS Last 2 in the area is out of the Weeks ground. We planted our soybeans last Wednesday (May 16). The hay is growing fast and stands about 20 to 22 inches tall.

A lot of hay will go down in the next week if the forecast is good. Most of Since April 25 the fieldwork is done and 1.7” over 90 percent of the soybeans are planted. We have good soil moisture around here.

Sprinkle taco meat, cheddar cheese and onion on one half. Fold to close. Place in a lightly greased frying pan, cook on medium heat until lightly browned, flip and repeat. Sour cream and salsa are great for dipping sauces.

2 8-oz. bars of cream cheese 1 jar of salsa Mix cream cheese until well blended. Add jar of salsa and mix until smooth and creamy. Eat with your favorite tortilla chips.

New York cheesecake Crust 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 3 Tbsp. sugar 3 Tbsp. butter, melted

Filling 4 8-ounce packages cream cheese, softened 1 cup sugar 3 Tbsp. flour 1 Tbsp. vanilla 1 cup sour cream 4 eggs

Mix crumbs, sugar and butter; piece onto bottom of 9-inch springform pan.

Bake at 325 degrees for 10 minutes if using a silver springform pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes if using a dark nonstick springform pan. Mix cream cheese, sugar, flour and vanilla with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Blend in sour cream. Add eggs, mixing on low speed just until blended. Pour over crust. Bake at 325 degrees for 65-70 minutes or until center is almost set if using a silver springform pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 65-70 minutes if using a dark, nonstick springform pan. Run knife or metal spatula around rim of pan to loosen cake; cool before removing rim of pan.

Refrigerate for four hours or overnight.

Marble peanut butter torte Crust 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup peanut butter 1 cup flour

Topping 1 8-ounce package cream cheese 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup peanut butter 2 eggs 2 cups Cool Whip 1 cup chocolate chips, melted

Combine sugar, butter and peanut butter; beat until fluffy. Add flour and blend.

Save some for topping and press remaining amount into a 9- by 13-inch pan.

Bake 5-10 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool. In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, vanilla, sugar and peanut butter until smooth. Beat the eggs and add to the mixture. Fold in the Cool Whip. Pour mixture over crust and drizzle melted chocolate. I use chocolate syrup instead. Marbleize with a knife. Top with the reserved crumbs and refrigerate. Also freezes well.
