Brandon Scharping is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine’s food animal medicine program, and encourages his fellow veterinarians to apply for the Veterinary Medical Loan Repayment Program. According to data provided by the USDA’s NaĆ&#x;onal InsĆ&#x;tute for Food and Agriculture, the average applicant for the VMLRP has over $114,000 in student loan debt.

However, the program isn’t just for new graduates. “Veterinarians can apply at any point in their career if they are working in an underserved area and still have substantial student debt,â€? said Brandon Scharping, a fourth-year veterinary student at UWSVM. In fact, the largest historical percentage of awards are given to veterinarians who have been practicing for four to six years, at 45 percent of applicants in that category, while new graduates have had a success rate of just 11 percent. With those numbers in mind, applicants should be mindful that just because they sent an application, their acceptance is not guaranteed. From ďƒžscal year 2010 through 2016, 388 awards were given out of a total 1,183 applications, of which the average debt per applicant was $114,136. “Taking a position in an area that is underserved does not automatically mean you will be selected for this program,â€? Pogreba said. For Pogreba, receiving a VMLRP award will be taken into consideration when she looks into where she’d

like to practice after graduating next spring. “I didn’t spend seven years of expensive schooling to opt for a position in hopes of receiving a little extra bonus pay for my student loans, but when it comes time for me to start interviewing I will be taking into consideration the counties that will be on the VMLRP list, Pogreba said. While acknowledging that the program is very attractive for recent graduates who have substantial student loan debt, Pogreba said it isn’t an end all, be all. She encouraged vet students to take into consideration more than just locale and the likelihood of receiving help in paying off their student loans.

“Personally, ďƒžnding your ďƒžrst job should not be determined solely by money, as much as it helps. There are multiple deciding factors such as the percentage of dairy vs. beef work, the facilities and equipment a clinic can offer, and the type of mentoring a new graduate can receive,â€? Pogreba said. The application deadline is May 19, with offers being made in September. Application materials can be found on the NIFA website at nifa. usda.gov. “This program is an excellent government incentive to help [veterinarians] pursue education in food animal medicine, and to try and meet the needs of the farming community in underserved areas,â€? Scharping said.

Flower Barn helps brighten Suzy’s winters Plants, not calves, in Oppriecht’s hoop building By Ron Johnson

ron.j@dairystar.com

FERRYVILLE, Wis. – Spring days nd Suzy Oppriecht busy in a barn, where she lovingly tends thousands of plants. This Crawford County dairy farm woman works in another barn, too – feeding calves and helping her husband, John, and son, Ed, and his wife, Jenny, milk the Holsteins and Jerseys. But it’s The Flower Barn that steals Oppriecht’s heart as winter slowly slips into spring. Her 150- by 35-foot hoop greenhouse is a cozy cocoon away from winter’s dark dreariness. “The winter, to me, is not pleasant,” Oppriecht said. “And the lack of sunshine is not pleasant. If I have the greenhouse season to plan for, my mind is happy and busy.” This is the 10th spring for The Flower Barn. But, Oppriecht’s interest in plants has far deeper roots. Growing up, she often helped her sister with her large, commercial greenhouse in eastern Wisconsin.

“It’s getting to be big,” Oppriecht said. “My mailing list is over 300.” Customers come to the Oppriechts’ farm in northern Crawford County from the La Crosse area of Wisconsin, along with parts of southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa. “People come here because they nd something different. They’re just delighted with the different plantings,” Oppriecht said. It might not be an overstatement to call Oppriecht a plant artist. She likes to mix plants of various textures, shapes and colors in her baskets, placing a minimum of nine plants in each. Some containers are not baskets at all. One is a usable birdhouse covered with moss. Another type is wooden shutters with plants tucked into their RON JOHNSON/DAIRY STAR recesses. Lowest milk hauling charges in parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin Report details costs of moving milk during May of 2016 By Ron Johnson

ron.j@dairystar.com

MINNEAPOLIS – Dairy farmers associated with the Upper Midwest Milk Marketing Order paid milk hauling charges ranging from 13 cents per hundredweight (cwt.) to $1.76 per cwt. during May 2016. So says a recent report, “Milk Hauling Charges in the Upper Midwest Marketing Area.,” from the Federal Milk Market Order administrator’s ofce in Minneapolis. It details the cost of trucking milk from farms associated with Federal Milk Marketing Order 30 to the rst delivery point. Order 30 is one of 10 federal milk marketing orders in the United States. Order 30 is made up of parts of seven states. It encompasses most of Wisconsin, except for a small area in the southwest corner, and most of Minnesota, but for an area in that state’s southwest. Order 30 also includes several counties in northern Illinois, part of northern Iowa, some of eastern North Dakota, part of northeastern South Dakota, and all of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The lowest hauling charge in May of 2016 in Order 30 was 13 cents. That was for milk from Minnesota’s Red Lake County. Farmers in Marathon County, Wis., were the next-lowest, paying 14 cents per cwt. Iowa’s highest hauling charges were in these counties: Tama, $1.10; O’Brien, 99 cents; Kossuth, 95 cents; Scott, 84 cents; Palo Alto, 82 cents; Henry, 80 cents; and Buchanan, 77 cents. In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, hauling charges averaged 33 cents in Menominee County and 33 cents in Delta County. Turning to milk originating in Illinois and moving into Order 30, these counties had the lowest hauling charges: Carroll, 21 cents; Jo Daviess, 28 cents; and Stephenson, 34 cents. Illinois’ highest charges were in these counties: Ogle, 60 cents; Whiteside, 58 cents; and Winnebago, 58 cents. In North Dakota, the lowest charges were found in these counties: Emmons, 63 cents; and Logan and McIntosh, each 74 cents. The highest North Dakota charges were in Stutsman County, $1.71; Hettinger County, $1.41; and

“Previous analysis has indicated that hauling charges are a function of producer pounds, the farm’s distance to plants, the farm’s distance to population centers, competition among handlers, and the concentration of dairy farms in the local market.” MILK HAULING CHARGES IN THE UPPER MIDWEST MARKETING AREA, REPORT

Morton County, $1.23. Milk from South Dakota had the lowest hauling charges in these counties: Marshall, 28 cents; Grant, 29 cents; and Moody, 38 cents. The highest hauling charges were in these counties: Beadle, 97 cents; McCook, 86 cents; and Brown, 74 cents. There’s an important caveat to all those numbers. In some instances, they do not represent the true cost of moving milk. According to Corey Freije, an economist with the Upper Midwest Milk Marketing Order administrator’s ofce, sometimes handlers or cooperatives subsidize hauling costs. And,

sometimes they simply absorb additional hauling costs as operating expenses. What’s more, some producers pay their hauling costs directly. Numbers on hauling charges often represent a at fee charged by the handler, notes the report. This at fee structure leads to a decreasing average hauling charge on a per-cwt. basis. “The possibility also exists that the hauling charge relationship for large producers may differ on a handler-byhandler basis,” the report said. “This relationship may mean the producer pays all charges external to the handler’s payroll or may haul his own milk. Previous analysis has indicated that haul-

ing charges are a function of producer pounds, the farm’s distance to plants, the farm’s distance to population centers, competition among handlers, and the concentration of dairy farms in the local market.” Data on hauling charges was not given for several counties, due to fewer than three producers in them. In Iowa, the numbers for 27 counties were restricted. In Minnesota, the charges for ve counties were not disclosed. In Wisconsin, four counties were restricted. North Dakota had 15 counties listed as restricted, while South Dakota had 11. In Illinois, nine counties had restricted numbers. And in the Michigan area of Order 30, the numbers from one county were restricted. Two states supplied most of the milk to order 30, says the report. Wisconsin and Minnesota provided more than 80 percent. For 2016, 12,813 dairy producers were associated with Order 30. They delivered 4.01 billion pounds of milk in May of 2016, up from 3.82 billion in May of 2015.

“We built our new ABS Global Calf Facility in the summer of 2016. This was the first time we utilized anything except steel at one of our facilities and it was a hard sell to the staff. However, after meeting with Travis at TJ’s Fencing in Harpers Ferry, and having him bring a gate home to show the staff, we were sold. We utilize more than 200 different sizes of gates, all purchased from TJ’s Fencing and installed by Cliff’s Incorporated from Friesland, Wis. The gating is holding up very well. Dairy’s

Star Youth

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am a member of the Melrose FFA Chapter where I compete in the Milk Quality and Products Career Development Event. I am a member of the Tel-Stars 4-H Club. In 4-H, I am a member of the Stearns County Dairy Project Bowl and Judging Teams, and I show dairy cattle. This year, I also chose to promote dairy by becoming a dairy princess in Stearns County. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I have a passion for the dairy industry, and I want to be active in it. These activities have helped me meet new people and share my experiences with others. My favorite activity is showing, because it was the rst activity I participated in, and through showing I have met people from across the state whom I still talk to today. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. At the Minnesota State Fair, it was my shift to watch the animals. As I was cleaning up behind them, some fairgoers caught my attention. They were interested in learning about dairy. I talked to them and helped to answer their questions. About half an hour later, they left, and I knew I made an impact on someone else. What’s your favorite social media? Snapchat, because it is all I have.

Dairy Star - Third Section • Saturday, May 13, 2017 • Page 13

Get to know Ashley Maus of Freeport, Minn.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? I have a large passion for the dairy industry and agriculture. I have also learned there are common misconceptions about what happens on farms throughout the state. Who do you look up to? I look up to my dad, because he will always have a smile on his face. He works hard and cares for the family, even when times are tough. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. This past February, I donated my hair for the sixth time in my life with the rst time being in kindergarten. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. Usually, I milk cows morning and night. I also feed cows and help with the other chores if one of my siblings are at a different activity. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would help others learn where their food comes from. Some people in larger cities are removed from agriculture and have not experienced a farm of any kind. I would invite people to visit a breakfast on the farm or the animal barns at a county or state fair to help them become more informed about where their food comes from and the daily life of a farmer.

What are your career aspirations? I do not know what the future holds for me. However, I plan to do something in the dairy industry to keep my passion for dairy alive.

News and Dairy Views from across the region

Dairy industry applauds USDA Secretary Perdue for supporting school milk options Dairy leaders thanked newly conrmed Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue for recognizing the important role school milk plays in ensuring school-aged children get the nutrition they need. In one of his rst actions as Secretary of Agriculture, Perdue visited Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, Va., to announce that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will implement regulations to allow school districts to again offer low-fat (1%) avored milk as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Under the Obama Administration, USDA eliminated low-fat avored milk as an option in the school meal and a la carte programs. Since then, consumption of school milk declined, as did overall participation in the school lunch program. “In just the rst two years after low-fat avored milk was removed from the program, 1.1 million fewer school students drank milk with their lunch,” said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation. “Secretary Perdue’s action today recognizes that a variety of milks and other healthy dairy foods are integral to child nutrition programs in schools.” “Today Secretary Perdue took an important step toward bringing back lunchroom favorites – low-fat chocolate and strawberry milk – that students have been missing,” said J. David Carlin, senior vice president of legislative affairs and economic policy for the International Dairy Foods Association. “When kids don’t drink milk, it’s extremely difcult for them to get the proper amounts of calcium, potassium, Vitamin D and other nutrients that dairy foods supply.” Perdue was joined in Virginia by Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS). Throughout the visit, Perdue outlined principles to provide schools greater exibility while maintaining the nutritional standards of the program. “We would also like to thank Sen. Roberts for his efforts to bring more milk options and exibility to the School Lunch and School Breakfast programs,” said Carlin. In the House, Reps. GT Thompson (R-PA) and Joe Courtney (D-CT) were also strong supporters of enhancing the milk options available to school kids. USDA will publish an interim rule to cover the regulatory changes needed to allow low-fat avored milk in schools. It is unclear when the change will be implemented. NMPF, USDEC organize dairy y-In on Capitol Hill to build support for trade with Canada, Mexico U.S. dairy leaders from across the country visited Washington, D.C., this week to urge Congress and Trump Administration ofcials to hold Canada accountable for its trade violations and hasten the repeal of Canada’s controversial new dairy

pricing system. During a y-in rally organized Tuesday and Wednesday by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), more than 40 farmers and dairy company executives fanned out on Capitol Hill to discuss the importance of trade across North America. The group emphasized that trade opportunities both north and south of the U.S. are crucial to America’s dairy sector. In addition to speaking to elected ofcials, the members of the dairy coalition also met with Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, Acting U.S. Trade Representative Stephen Vaughn and White House agriculture advisor Ray Starling. “Canada’s new Class 7 milk pricing scheme unfairly undercuts U.S. dairy exports to Canada and around the world. This is an economic dagger pointed at every farmer in the United States, not just those from a few states,” said Jim Mulhern, President and CEO of NMPF. “We also were clear that the income of thousands of dairy farmers depends on the valuable partnership that we have with Mexico, our largest export market.” NMPF and USDEC member cooperative and company leaders explained to lawmakers how they have lost sales to Canada and expressed fears of the consequences of Canada dumping its milk excess onto global markets at prices far below their domestic price – in violation of Canada’s trade agreement concessions. Dairy leaders emphasized that U.S. dairy exports create jobs across the nation, and distributed fact sheets quantifying the economic impact nationally and stateby-state. USDEC Senior Vice President Jaime Castaneda said that U.S. dairy groups “have repeatedly stressed that trade has become an integral part of the U.S. dairy industry and we must expand markets and ght to keep those that we have today. We should hold countries accountable when they break the rules.” NMPF Board member Leroy Plagerman, a farmer from Lynden, Washington, and member of Darigold, said that farmers in his region “are the closest to growing Asian export markets and we rely heavily on our ability to reach those customers – and so we feel very threatened by what Canada is doing.” Whittemore, Michigan, farmer Rod Daniels, representing the Michigan Milk Producers Association said that “Michigan is producing more milk and we need more export markets. Canada’s repeated efforts to bend or break the trade rules to which it has agreed, makes things worse for dairy farmers in Michigan and across the country. Canada should know that we will continue to sound the alarm about the new pricing policy.” Legislators and dairy industry members also discussed the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Lake Mills, Wisconsin, dairy farmer Charles Untz, representing Dairy Farmers of America, said that as negotiations over the pact continue, “it is critical to preserve the strong and stable trade relationship the U.S. dairy industry enjoys with Mexico. Wisconsin’s dairy sector, like so much of the rest of the country’s, needs to continue building on our export business and Mexico is a big part of that equation.” Twenty-seven dairy representatives from outside D.C. attended meetings with various members of the House and Senate, including House Speaker Paul Ryan (RWI), along with the Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate and House Agriculture Committees, the House Ways and Means Committee, and the Senate Finance Committee. In addition to NMPF and USDEC, executives from the International Dairy Foods Association and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture also participated in the meetings.

A cover crop eld day will be held on the Dan and Crystal Ley farm located near Richmond on May 16. The Leys participated in a 3 year Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to determine the potential economic value of various winter small grains planted as cover crops in the fall and harvested in the spring as silage. Dan planted cereal rye, winter triticale, spelt, and winter wheat in strips on a 12 acre eld in the fall of 2015 and 2016. Dan has been measuring silage yield and forage quality of the cover crops as well as yield impact on the following soybean crop. He also tracked changes in soil health in the small grain elds and compared that to an adjacent check strip with no cover crops. Standard series soil tests, along with the new Haney Soil Health Tool, were also run on each strip. Dan also monitored physical soil changes including soil temperature, soil moisture, permeability, and compaction. The Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and Ag Resources Consulting, Inc. of Albany assisted Dan with these tests. The eld day will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 16. You will see what these crops look like prior to harvest and hear speakers from the U of M Extension, Ag. Resources Consulting, Inc., and the SWCD summarize the data, including economic value of the winter small grain silage. There is no cost to attend the event and a light lunch with refreshments will be provided. Contact Brad Wenz at 320-251-7800, ext. 3 for more information or visit the SWCD website at www.stearnscountyswcd.net. PDPW is sponsoring webinars: “Weather: More than a guess” on May 17 and June 14. Webinars are presented by: Eric Snodgrass is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also the co-founder of Global Weather and Climate Logistics, LLC., which recently merged with Agrible Inc., a precision farm management and predictive analytics company, where he serves as co-founder and senior atmospheric scientist. May 17: Correlating severe weather and U.S. grain markets. Discuss the pros and cons of different mechanical ventilation systems, with an emphasis on cross and tunnel ventilation. An economic model will be used to highlight the differences. This webinar is a must for anyone considering renovation or construction. Gain a rst-hand look at the numbers that make economic sense and optimize cow comfort. June 14: Weather outlook for summer and fall. June is a pivotal time for grain markets. Long range weather outlooks for July and August can make or break a farming operation, and grain markets are often most volatile during these months. In addition to providing rain and temperature forecasts for the next 30 days, we’ll assess the current progress of the growing season and look for stressors across the country that could impact grain prices moving forward. Analyze how past weather events have moved the markets during summer and provide the latest long range forecasts through the end of the growing season. Learn how to forecast excessive heat and drought - these two factors have a huge impact on your operation’s input costs because they negatively impact yields, herd health and milk production. Register by phone at 800-947-7379. The “Growing Your Livestock Farm Business with an FSA Loan” workshop is scheduled for May 17, from 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Iowa County Health and Human Services Building, Conference Room, 303 W Chapel Street, Dodgeville, WI 53533. The event is open to the public but registration is requested online at http://estore.learngrowconnect.org/GrowingFarm-Business-FSA-Loan.html. 8 REASONS TO USE JANAIRE CURTAINS IN YOUR FREESTALL AND CALF BARN!

1. The 6” dead air space within the curtain adds to

the thermo efficiency of your building. It allows you to move more air through the building and still maintain a decent temperature in freestall barns. A better insulated barn is a drier barn.

2. They are transparent which lets the sunlight in! 3. They are automatic and controlled by simple thermostats.

4. They are easy to install. 5. Once they are installed, there is no adjusting. 6. They are quiet and don’t flap in the wind, like most other curtains.

“We’ve been using JanAire Curtains in our freestall and holding area for 18 years. Because they are insulated, we have never had an issue with our alleys freezing. We like the natural light that they provide and the automatic operation. We plan on using them on our next expansion.” - Scott Herber - Altura, MN

7. Our curtain seals tight and are draft free, making them ideal for holding areas.
