Kaspers play competitive pool as outlet to farming

MEDFORD, Minn. – Like in choosing their career in dairy farming, Patrick and Derrick Kasper have followed in their grandpa’s footsteps when it comes to entertainment in their down time.

The brothers have been playing competitive pool for the past several years after rst learning the game from their grandpa, who has won trophies for his pool success.

The Kaspers farm together with their grandparents, Darwain and Barb, and their parents, Scott and Dawn, on their 220-cow dairy near Medford, Minn.

“Grandpa’s the one who put the pool table in the barn [ofce],” Derrick said. “A lot of his trophies are in there.

Grandma played a lot, too.”

It is where the younger generation rst learned the game, starting at the age of about 6.

“I always liked shooting and practicing with Grandpa,” Patrick said.

But the two brothers had to earn their wins against the senior Kasper.

“It used to be that he would just whoop us, but that doesn’t happen as much anymore,”

Patrick said. “He won’t let you win. When we shoot with him, he always tries to kick our butts.”

A victory against their grandpa means a lot.

“I can compete with him now. It took a lot of years,” Derrick said.

Throughout those years of losses, the Kaspers learned about the game.

“When we played Grandpa, he would explain stuff,” Derrick said.

Darwain also taught the brothers how to hold their stick, how to set up shots and

how to shoot consistently.

They would also get in practice during family holidays when pool was a staple during the day.

Eventually, Patrick and Derrick started playing pool with their friends, which continued into their adult years when they joined the dairy after working off-the-farm jobs for a few years. Patrick has been back on the farm for 13 years while Derrick has been full time for seven.

Competitive pool has been a hobby for at least 10 years.

While Derrick has had his own team, Patrick started on a team four years ago. Before that, he would be a substitute for his brother or friends. One night each week, the Kaspers each play in a pool league, forming ve-person teams with their friends.

“It’s the same group of 10 guys we have grown up with since we were little,” Derrick said.

During league nights, two teams faceoff. Each person on the team plays ve games in the night – matching up with each person on the other team.

The Kaspers begin the league in the early winter and round out the season towards the end of May.

“All our friends do it and it’s challenging,” he said. “Not

herd. Since each of the brothers plays on a separate league night, only one needs to be gone during the evening. However, since the games start at 7 p.m., Derrick and Patrick are usually able to get their chores done before needing to leave.

“It’s a challenge getting there on time – getting out of the barn, getting a shower and driving to town,” Patrick said.

“Usually our team knows to put us last on the list so we have a little more time.”

Tournaments take more coordination because they might need to skip a morning

or evening chore time.

“That’s the nice thing working with family,” Patrick said. “We cover for each other when we’re going to be gone.”

During the off months, the Kaspers usually spend their time playing in a sand volleyball league, going four-wheeling or rebuilding cars. But pool is always there in case they need a change from the routine.

“It’s something easy to kill time when we’re out at the bar with our friends or hanging out at home,” Derrick said. “Two guys can be playing while the

rest of the guys can hang out and talk.”

Plus, the Kaspers like that it’s inexpensive to play. They received pool sticks from their grandpa and pay $10 per night for the league. One game while out at the bar is $1.50. Or, it’s free if they play at home.

“That’s pretty cheap fun,” Derrick said.

And when their friends are not free for a quick game, they know they can always get their grandpa to challenge their skills with a game in the barn, where their love for the hobby began.

Jameses welcome twin heifer calves of two breeds

Holstein, Jersey pair born to same cow

MINERAL POINT, Wis. – Twin calves were recently born on Pine-Valley Farm, Mineral Point, Wis. Admittedly, there’s not much terribly unusual about most twin births.

But there’s more to this story. Not only are the PineValley Farm twins not identical, they’re not even the same breed. One is a black and white Holstein while her sister is a fawn-colored, doe-eyed Jersey.

How could such a quirk occur? What kind of trick of nature is responsible?

Actually, there is quite a logical explanation, according to Leah James. She and her husband, Jason, own the Pine-Valley cattle and rent the facilities from Jason’s parents, Ralph and Mary Jean James. The couple, who has an 8-month-old daughter, Brenlyn, milk 155 cows and farm 200 acres. About 100 of the

cows are Holsteins, while 45 are Jerseys and 20 are Milking Shorthorns.

Although she works on the farm, Leah has another job, too. She is the U.S. marketing manager for Genex, a cattle genetics cooperative headquartered in Shawano, Wis. Leah explained how she thinks a dairy cow could give birth to twin heifers of two breeds.

According to Leah, Number 1118, the twins’ dam, a Holstein heifer, was articially inseminated at the end of June 2017.

“Then she must have shown a heat for my husband in that next week or so,” Leah said. “So, he wrote her down on the (embryo) recipient list because we were due to have a ush.”

Later, on July 7, No. 1118 was examined with ultrasound.

“The heifer had a good corpus luteum and was deemed a good candidate for ushing,” Leah said.

The veterinarian placed an embryo from a Jersey into No.

“She proceeded to not only settle to that A.I. breeding, but also took to the embryo as a surrogate, as well,” Leah said.

Jason and Leah try to ultrasound all their heifers between 29 and 35 days after breeding or implanting. That ultrasound

conrmed the fact that twins were, indeed, on the way.

When she heard the news, Leah said she jokingly told Jason the cow would have one of each.

It was not until Leah punched No. 1118’s recent data into the farm’s computer that

she realized the cow had been bred A.I., along with getting an embryo. Nevertheless, when March 27, 2018 arrived, Jason and Leah were not prepared for what Jason discovered with cow No. 1118.

“We were very surprised,” Leah said. “My husband went out to check the maternity barn that morning. He sent me a picture of the calves and said, ‘She did it. One calf of each breed.’”

What’s more, the twins were almost a birthday gift for Jason.

“They missed his birthday, March 21, by just a few days,” Leah said.

How rare is twins?

“Generally, I think it’s less than 10 percent,” Leah said about regular twins.

And for this situation?

“I don’t know the answer to that,” said Leah. “I think it’s very rare.”

Rare, but not unheard of. Leah said after she posted the twins’ birth on Facebook, people commented they had a similar situation happen.

One person who was surprised by these twins was the Jameses herd veterinarian, Dr. Amy Robinson from Military Ridge Veterinary Service in Dodgeville, Wis. “She was shocked,” Leah said.

“She called it amazing and said she’d never seen it before.”

Mother and daughters were doing just ne, about a month after their birth, Leah said.

“The dam popped the calves out, no problem,” Leah said. “And she’s milking really well and hasn’t missed a beat.”

What’s more, neither calf is on the small side, but average for the PineValley herd.

The twins have been moved to outdoor hutches, where they – No. 1315, the Holstein, and No. 1316, the Jersey – can soak up the spring sunshine. Of course, their hutches are right next to each other. That makes it easier to show the pair to farm visitors and explain their out-of-the-ordinary tale.

Leah said the Jameses do a fair amount of marketing of their registered Holsteins, Jerseys and Milking Shorthorns. Plans are to keep both heifer twins and possibly show them, especially the Jersey.

“The Jersey embryo calf is from one of our favorite cow families,” Leah said. “Her dam and granddam are still here and they’re both [scored] 93 points.”

Jason and Leah have more than one prex for their three breeds of registered cattle. The Holsteins fall under the Pine-Valley prex and the Jerseys are under the PVF prex. So, formally the twins are Pine-Valley Crowne Whey and PVF Chrome River-ET. For their work with registered Jerseys, Jason and Leah will be honored this June as the National Young Jersey Breeders.

From pasture to pastor

Minnesota dairywoman is also a Lutheran minister

BOYD, Minn. – Dairy farm women often wear different hats: wife, mother, tractor driver, calf wrangler and veterinarian are just a few examples.

About a dozen years ago, dairywoman Lori Wold added Lutheran pastor to her lineup of headgear. “I was 49 years old at the time and it just felt like I needed a change,� Lori said.

Lori and her husband, Richard, and their son, Matt, milk 60 registered Jerseys on their farm located near Boyd, Minn. They grow much of the feed for their closed herd and raise all their replacements.

The couple has three children and seven grandchildren: Douglas and his wife, Nicole, have three children, Colton, 5, Grifďƒžn, 4, and Corbin, 3 months.

Mandy Leopold and her husband, Tyler, have two children, Elliana, 5, and Aiden, 1. Matt and his wife, Lauren, have two children, Landon, 2, and Jackson, 1 month.

Lori was raised Catholic but began attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd with Richard after they were wed.

This fall, the high school sweethearts will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. “The Catholic Church and the Lu-

theran Church have a lot of things in common,� Lori said. “Much of the liturgy is the same, and we share many of the same customs and traditions.�

As she approached midlife, Lori felt a growing need to give back to her community and do more for others. “I took an assessment test to see what would be a good match for me, and it said that I was suited to be either a minister or a nurse,� she said.

To get a feel for each occupation, Lori signed up for the Theological Education for Emerging Ministries (TEEM) program offered through Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. While she waited to be accepted, she took a semester of nursing classes at Minnesota West Community College.

The TEEM program takes into account the age and life experiences of each candidate as he or she prepares to become an ordained minister in the Lutheran faith. “One of the requirements of the TEEM program is that the candidate be 40 years of age or older,� Lori said. “The program has on occasion accepted someone younger than 40 with special circumstances. It’s an intense, three-year program that consists of 50 percent online learning and 50 percent coursework at the Wartburg campus. I would drive the eight hours to Dubuque four times a year and spend a week on campus attending classes.�

Lori was the ďƒžrst person in her synod to complete the TEEM program at Wartburg. Before graduation, she began a year-long internship at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson, Minn. After graduation, she served as interim pastor for two months at Grace Lutheran. This was followed by a six-month term serving the parish churches of Saron Lutheran Church and Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Baxter Township in rural Montevideo, Minn. Lori was ordained in July 2010 and soon received a letter of call from Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd. “They told us in seminary that it could take up to ďƒžve years to build a level of trust with your parishioners,â€? Lori said. “That hasn’t been the case for me.

There was a high level of trust and acceptance right from the beginning. I have known many of our parishioners for their entire lives.�

Being a pastor means Lori shares in her congregation members’ joys and sorrows. “I really enjoy performing weddings and baptisms,â€? Lori said. “But I am also honored to ofďƒžciate at funerals. A while ago, I conducted a funeral for a person who was our age and a very close friend of ours. During prayer time with the family before the start of the service, I was overwhelmed with sadness and began to cry. I later apologized to the family, but they said it was OK, that it was a very real reaction to the loss of their loved one. I have learned that it’s important to give myself time to grieve.â€?

Part of Lori’s job as a pastor is to counsel those who are enduring troubled times. “I think that people have become less hesitant about going to their pasTurn to WOLD| Page 9

Con�nued from WOLD| Page 8 tor to ask for advice or just to vent,” Lori said. “I see this as a very positive development. I often ask people how their picture could change and how they can work toward that goal in a healthy, positive way.”

Wearing a dairywoman’s cap and a clerical collar comes with advantages and challenges.

“We have been bringing our conrmation class out to our farm so that they can learn more about dairying,” Lori said. “This is the rst experience with dairy cattle for many of them. We let them milk a cow, teach them how milk gets from the farm to

the table and tell them about all the hard work that dairy farmers do each day. We explain how, as dairy farmers, we use our vocation to feed the world and to make a difference.”

Richard explained some of the care cows require.

“On the other hand, the cows always seem to know when it’s Sunday,” Richard said.

“It seems like all the calves are born on Sunday morning.”

Lori can see some parallels between watching over her congregation and caring for her family’s dairy herd.

Another family activity at Trinity Lutheran in 2016 was a 5K Fun Run. “The Fun Run included a contest,” Lori said. “The pastor of a neighboring church that had the most people participate in the Fun Run got to throw a pie in my face.”

In addition to her duties as pastor, Lori helps with milking and chores when needed. During the busy harvest season, you will likely nd her driving a tractor as she performs fall tillage.

“I love every aspect of serving as pastor, especially spending time with all of my people,” Lori said. “It is truly a blessing when your work doesn’t seem like work. It’s an honor and a privilege to walk alongside my parishioners on their life’s journey. For me, there is no greater gift than that.”

The 16th annual Southeast Minnesota All-Breeds Youth Dairy Show will be Saturday, June 9 at the Winona County Fairgrounds in St. Charles, Minn. A national workshop that will help America raise its next generation of farmers and ranchers has been scheduled for Aug. 14-15 in Marsheld, Wis. The Child Agricultural Injury Prevention Workshop is all about working together to safeguard youth, said Marsha Salzwedel, M.S., National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety.

National Mastitis Council (NMC) invites milk quality enthusiasts to its regional meeting in Guelph, Ont., Canada, June 20-22, on the beautiful University of Guelph campus.

The NMC Regional Meeting, hosted jointly with the Ontario Association of Bovine Practitioners and Dairy Farmers of Ontario, features “Solutions to Emerging Milk Quality Issues.” Presenters will address implementation of selective dry cow therapy programs, bedding options and their impact on udder health, and maintaining the highest milk quality when transitioning to robotic milking systems. The NMC Regional Meeting kicks off with nine short courses on June 20. These short courses provide a small group setting, which allows participants to interact directly with instructors and other short course participants. Two short courses feature the “teaching parlor,” a one-of-a-kind portable training device designed to simulate a real milking parlor. The teaching parlor was among the most popular teaching tools used at NMC’s annual meeting held in Arizona this past winter.

During the evening of June 20, enjoy some camaraderie with milk quality enthusiasts during the evening banquet, which features Andrew Samis who will address “Saturated Fat: A New Perspective.” Samis, a human physician afliated with Queens University, developed a research interest in diet and cardiovascular disease after completing his doctorate in gastrointestinal physiology. He has published in this area and has served on several national expert panels associated with the development of guidelines related to diet and cardiovascular disease. He will review the history of saturated fat dietary guidelines and debunk the myth that saturated fats, including butter, impair human health.

On June 21, the general session addresses several topics related to emerging milk quality challenges. Key topics include animal welfare, automatic milking systems, bedding management, free fatty acids and product quality, antibiotic use and selective dry cow therapy.

The NMC Regional Meeting concludes with dairy farm tours on June 22. Tour stops include Dual Lane, Kelderview and Larenwood dairies. Owners of these dairies will show visitors how they achieve outstanding quantity and quality milk production, along with sharing insights on providing cow comfort, building collaborative relationships and adhering to standard operating procedures.

The early registration deadline is May 31. However, short courses have limited enrollment and are lled on a rst-comerst-served basis. Courses may reach their capacity before the deadline, so register early. To register for the meeting, go to http://oabp.ca/nmc-regional-meeting-registration.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? The South Dakota Junior Holstein Association, of which I served as president for four years, and 4-H, in which I am the current Brown County King.

I’ve learned from him factors into that.

He has shaped me into the person I am today whether he knows it or not, and I truly cannot express how thankful I am for that.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I consider myself a very musical person as I play the alto saxophone and sing in choir and have won numerous awards from each. The highlight is being named to S.D. All-State Chorus for three years.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? My family has had a history of being involved in these organizations as we feel they are beneďƒžcial to developing hard-working kids with good character. 4-H is my favorite because I have been provided with useful opportunities and the program encompasses a wide variety of options to participate in, which makes a well-rounded individual.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experiences through the Junior Holstein Association are made while going and competing at the national conventions each summer. In 4-H, my best experiences are the two national trips I have gone on, dairy judging at World Dairy Expo in 2015 and being a delegate for the Citizenship Washington Focus trip in 2016.

What’s your favorite social media?

Snapchat because it’s fast communication with someone in pictures and words; simple and efďƒžcient.

What are your career aspirations? I would like to work in the ďƒžnancing industry, preferably for agriculture, but I am not sure yet. Accountant or CPA and

Much of the public holds incorrect beliefs and opinions about what agriculture is, and they have no grasp of how agriculture affects their daily lives. The best way to attack that problem is to educate everyone, young children especially. We need to show people a farm ďƒžrsthand. This way people would grow up with more of an understanding of how important agriculture is for everyone no matter who you are. Hopefully people in agriculture are more widely supported once the public knows the facts.

Professional Dairy Producers Foundation (PDPF) met fundraising goal Once again, the dairy community has come together to meet the emerging needs of our industry. Even in these tough times, dairy producers and industry leaders have shown their commitment to a legacy of learning for all generations. The 2018 “Plant a Seed.

Inspire a Dream” campaign raised $25,300.

PDPF funds educational programs and initiatives that develop its people and maintain public trust in production practices, environmental stewardship and food safety.

Investing in Dairy’s Foundation, means investing in your way of life and nurturing dairy’s future. The “Plant a Seed. Inspire a Dream” campaign funds dairy industry education programs that grow the next generation of dairy leaders by supporting programs like the PDPW Youth Leadership Derby, PDPW Mentor Program and PDPW Cornerstone Dairy AcademyTM. Through meaningful donations, the dairy community is ensuring that in addition to land and animals, a legacy of learning is passed to the next generation.

World Forage Analysis Superbowl to award $22,000 in cash prizes The World Forage Analysis Superbowl is now accepting entries for its 35th annual competition with more than $22,000 in cash prizes to be awarded to the best samples.

The top forage producers from across the country will be recognized and awarded at the annual Mycogen Seeds Awards Luncheon on October 3 during World Dairy Expo at the Alliant Energy Center, Madison, Wis., made possible by Platinum Contest Sponsor, Mycogen Seeds.

The contest evaluates lab and visual components in seven forage categories and awards $1,500 to the top individual in each class, with additional prizes also awarded to second through fourth place nishers. The contest categories and corresponding sponsors include: Champion Baleage, sponsored by Agri-King; Champion Commercial Hay, sponsored by NEXGROW Alfalfa; Champion Dairy Hay, sponsored by W-L Research; Champion Grass Hay, sponsored by Barenbrug USA; Champion Haylage, sponsored by Ag-Bag; Champion Standard Corn Silage, sponsored by Agrisure Traits; and Champion Brown Midrib Corn Silage, sponsored by Mycogen Seeds.

Special issue of the Journal of Dairy Science® highlights advances in silage research Silage is the fermented and acidic stored feed from agricultural crops routinely fed on dairy and livestock farms worldwide. In the United States, corn silage production increased by approximately 33 percent between 1982 and 2012, and 2.61 million hectares are currently used for corn silage production. Because of its importance to dairy science and agriculture more broadly, the Journal of Dairy Science assembled a special issue on silage to add critical insight and information to the available literature.

Silages supply energy, protein, and digestible ber to ruminants. Managing silage is a critical task because signicant reductions in the energy value and nutritional quality of silage are possible during storage. The estimated economic impact of nutrient loss in silage exceeds $2 billion per year, highlighting the importance of research regarding silage.

In the Silage Special Issue, topics covered include silage feeding, silage safety and human health, nutrient loss in silage, effects of additives, microbial ecology of silage, and effects of climate on silage, among others. These reviews cover vital topics that are of considerable impact. The implications for human safety are of particular note, according to Adegbola Adesogan, PhD, director of the Feed The Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems, Department of Animal Sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA; the topic has rarely appeared in a peer-reviewed scientic publication.

“This Silage Special Issue is intended as a comprehensive, contemporary review of the major aspects of silage technology from harvest to feeding. It builds on the legacy of the Agronomy Monograph No. 42 (Silage Science and Technology) published in 2003,” Dr. Adesogan, one of the organizers of the issue, said.

Public comment period now open on Groundwater Protection Rule The public comment period for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) proposed Groundwater Protection Rule (GPR) is now open and will remain open until July 26, 2018. Public comments on the Groundwater Protection Rule can be made on the Ofce of Administrative Hearings website at www.mda.state. mn.us/gwprhearingnotice.

“In an effort to ensure all stakeholders have the opportunity to have their voices heard, we have extended the traditional 30-day public comment period by 50 days and will hold an 80-day public comment period,” said Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson. “I encourage anyone with interest in the rule to provide their feedback through the rulemaking process.”

Nitrate is one of the most common contaminants in Minnesota’s groundwater; elevated nitrate levels in drinking water can pose serious health concerns for humans. The goal of the Groundwater Protection Rule is to work with local farmers to reduce elevated nitrate levels in groundwater. The proposed rule would regulate the use of nitrogen fertilizer in areas of the state where soils are vulnerable to leaching and where drinking water supplies have high nitrate levels.

Public input is important to the rule making process, and in addition to submitting written comments online, the public can also testify on the rule at Administrative Law Judge hearings scheduled this summer.

Rural health informatics playing increased role in agricultural safety News media reports of agricultural injuries and fatalities can ll an important information gap and provide near real-time, humanized stories for safety professionals and policymakers who are focused on the future of agricultural health and safety, according to research published in the journal Injury Prevention.

There is no central repository of agricultural injury data, and federal childhood ag injury surveillance has ended. However, researchers at the National Farm Medicine Center are building and testing rural health informatics tools to enhance the collection and dissemination of publicly available injury case data from news reports.

Authors Bryan Weichelt, Ph.D., National Farm Medicine Center, and Serap Gorucu, Ph.D., of Penn State University, highlighted data collection and its safety implications in their article, “Supplemental surveillance: a review of 2015 and 2016 agricultural injury data from news reports on AgInjuryNews.org,” available at http:// dx.doi.org/10.1136/injuryprev-2017-042671.

At the heart of the research is www.AgInjuryNews. org, the largest publicly-available dataset of its kind, built by the National Farm Medicine Center, Marsheld Clinic Research Institute, Marsheld, Wis.

The review of news reports revealed that tractors were the most common injury source (fatal and non-fatal) across all age groups, 32 percent of the 1,345 victims. The leading injury source among the 225 youth victims (ages 0-17) was all-terrain vehicles (33 percent).

“We continue to see new and innovative uses of this growing dataset by many audiences beyond academia including insurers, lenders, manufacturers, and other agribusiness interested in the success and longevity of ag operations,” said Weichelt, principal investigator of the AgInjuryNews initiative.

In the absence of a national surveillance program for agriculture-related injuries among U.S. adults and children, news media and similar reports have become increasingly valuable for ag safety stakeholders. AgInjuryNews.org has more than 350 registered users. To create an account, visit www.AgInjuryNews.org and click “Register”. A new version of AgInjuryNews.org is scheduled for release in June 2018. In addition to adding international data, the site will include more options for searching and ltering, data visualization, and customizable email delivery of reports.

“Custom email alerts will allow users to choose what types of injury reports they want to see and how often they want to receive them,” Weichelt said. “For example, someone might want weekly reports of ATV-related adult injuries, or skid steer-related youth injuries from a particular state or region.”

The authors acknowledge there are limitations to mining injury data from news reports, including the fact that not all agricultural fatalities are reported in the media. Non-fatal injuries are thought to be particularly underreported.

Funding for this project was provided by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Agricultural Safety and Health Council of America, the Marsheld Clinic Research Institute, and the National Farm Medicine Center.

SDSU places near the top in national contests The South Dakota State University Dairy Products Judging Team and Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge Team had noteworthy nishes at their respective competitions this spring. The Dairy Products Judging Team won the national championship at the 2018 Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest. The Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge Team placed seventh at the 17th Annual North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge®.

“The students’ hard work over the course of the year shows in their performance,” said Dairy and Food Science Department Head Vikram Mistry. “Our coaches and their assistants are passionate about these programs and provide students excellent direction and education. These two program reect the unique offerings of the department, providing opportunities from farm to product.”

Dairy Products Judging Team The 2018 Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest was held on April 18, 2018, in Milwaukee, Wis. A total of 49 undergraduate and graduate contestants from 15 universities in the U.S. participated in the contest.

Team members were Anna Hemenway, Huron, S.D.; Greg Reeter, Volga, S.D.; Megan Struss, New Ulm, Minn.; Ahmed Hammam, Assiut, Egypt. Lloyd Metzger, SDSU Professor of Dairy Science and Alfred Chair in Dairy Education, and Bennet Baker, SDSU student, served as coaches.

At the national contest, the team placed rst in butter, ice cream and yogurt, second in milk and fourth in cottage cheese and Cheddar cheese. Struss was also the top overall judge, receiving the Robert Rosenbaum Award.

The team also competed in the 2018 Midwest Regional Collegiate Dairy Products Judging Contest on April 7, 2018 in Coopersville, Mich. They placed rst in All Products and Hemenway achieved second overall.

“The team did exceptionally well,” Metzger said. “Dairy products judging teaches the students to identify avor and quality defects in six different dairy products. This critical skill helps manufacturers produce products that have the desired taste and texture, as well as helping to quickly identify and correct problems that can occur during the manufacturing process.”

In dairy products judging, students evaluate the appearance, texture and avor of milk, butter, Cheddar cheese, ice cream, yogurt and cottage cheese.

Members of the judging team often obtain a position in quality control or manufacturing and they use their product judging skills to identify issues and improve the quality of dairy products.

According to Mistry, students from SDSU have been competing in dairy products judging since the beginning of the judging program in 1916. SDSU has won the national championship nine out of the last 10 years and 24 times in the 96-year history of the contest.

Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge Team The Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge Team participated in the 17th Annual North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge® (NAIDC) held April 12-14 in Visalia, Calif. The SDSU team placed seventh overall at the national contest.

The team consisted of Olivia Bartel, New London, Wis.; Kelli Berger, Lake Benton, Minn.; Caleb Blaisdell, Starbuck, Minn.; Audrey Souza, Milbank, S.D. Melissa Schmitt, Assistant Manager at the SDSU Dairy Research and Training Facility served as coach.

Students Chelsea Schossow and Jacob Weg were assistant coaches.

“Participating in Dairy Challenge gives students a great opportunity to not only use the knowledge learned in class, but also to gain hands-on experience in evaluating a dairy farm,” Schmitt said. “This program is very benecial to be involved in, as it helps to better understand the economics of running a dairy business and what it takes to be a successful dairy farmer.”

In total, 235 students from 38 colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada attended this educational event. Participants visited six dairy farms in California as part of their training to help farmers evaluate and adapt management to optimize success and animal care. Also, industry professionals presented cutting-edge research, new programs and career opportunities to students.

Each contest team received information from an area dairy, including production and farm management data. After an in-person inspection of the dairy, students interviewed the herd owners. Each team developed a farm analysis and recommendations for nutrition, reproduction, milking procedures, animal health, housing and nancial management.

The event culminated with team members presenting recommendations and then elding questions from a panel of judges. These ofcial judges included dairy producers and industry experts in dairy nances, reproduction, nutrition and animal health. Judges evaluated presentations for accuracy of analysis and recommendations, with awards presented at a nal banquet.

According to Mistry, SDSU students have been competing in the Dairy Challenge event since 2003.

HERD NOTES: After 30 years the Kielers have decided to discontinue from dairying. They have done a

great job with this dairy herd. They have won milk quality awards for eight years. It is one of the top herds in this area with plenty to choose from. The right kind to fill your milk cooler. All home raised cattle, a closed herd for past 20 years. All AI bred since 1977 using Select Sires, Genex & Accelerated Genetic.

Sires used are Planet, Shamrock, Potter & Lincoln . The SCC runs from 80,000-120,000 with a 75lb. milk average. Many cows are giving over 100 lbs. with some up to 120 lbs. Presently being milked in a 100 stanchion dairy barn and are use to free stalls. Many 1st & 2nd lactation cows. Cows are large framed with many fancy udders showing excellent dairy quality.
