1. Hold nozzle 4 to 6 inches away.

2. Separate quarter from leg.

3. Move the bottle in a mostly downward sweeping motion while pulling the nozzle trigger. Normal application is 3 to 5 pulls per quarter, depending on udder size. For fresh animals, spray all 4 quarters.

First-calf heifers: Continue 2x/day for 3 days; Multi-lactation cows: Continue 2x/day for 5 days post-calving.”

The 160-cow herd has an 85-lb herd average and SCC of 70,000.

Fire destroys 100-year-old barn

Forty-four cows safely removed from Stearns County structure NEW MUNICH, Minn. – A re destroyed a 100-year-old barn when it was engulfed in ames about 7:30 p.m. on May 3. The farm is located near New Munich, Minn., in Stearns County. Two nearby re departments, Melrose and Freeport, responded to the re. The 44 dairy cows were safely removed from the burning barn.

The farm site is owned by Luverne Hinnenkamp of Melrose, Minn. and rented by Kevin Bauer, also of Melrose.

around 7 p.m. Saturday night and went to the Bauers’ home farm to help with other chores. Upon hearing about the re, Bauer drove to the farmsite where he saw ames shooting high into the sky. He and Melrose reghters were able to get the 44 cows out of the barn.

In addition to putting out the ames, reghters worked to protect the surrounding structures.

“With the wind going towards the house – that was the biggest hazard,” said Melrose re chief, Jeremy Kraemer. “Otherwise, it was fought defen-

sively and from the outside since the building was so compromised.”

Due to the proximity to Interstate 94, Minnesota State Patrol Troopers were dispatched to assist with trafc control along with Stearns County Sheriff’s Ofce Deputies.

The Melrose Ambulance was dispatched to standby at the scene and transported one reghter to the Melrose Hospital after that reghter was struck in the head by falling debris. On Sunday, Kraemer said that reghter was doing ne.

Fire departments transported water from Melrose. Close to 40 reghters were on scene for over four hours; the last ones leaving around 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

The barn and dairy equipment were insured.

Kraemer explained the re started in a piece of equipment on the north side of the building.

“We used the burn pattern to bring us to the re source,” he said.

On Sunday afternoon, reghters were back at the scene, putting out hotspots, as family watched.

The cows were moved to the Bauer home place and will continue to be milked there.

“We thank everyone who helped haul the cows to the home farm,” Bauer said.
