Guernsey breeders’ dedication recognized Andersons inducted into MLBA Hall of Fame

LESTER PRAIRIE, Minn. – Another award was added to the impressive list of Up The Creek Farm’s accomplishments as David and Donna Anderson were recognized as this year’s inductees to the Minnesota Livestock Breeder’s Association (MLBA) Hall of Fame March 26 in St. Paul, Minn.

“For us, this has always been a family thing,” David said. “To be in the hall, with a lot of inuential people, is really a great honor. This is a big award for livestock in our state.”

The Andersons milk 54 registered Guernsey on their dairy, Up The Creek Farm, near Lester Prairie, Minn., with their son, Kevin, and daughter, Karen (Anderson) Johnson. They also run more than 150

innovators in agriculture

Throughout the years, the Andersons have established themselves in the dairy industry, breeding exceptional Guernsey cattle and taking on representative roles in local, regional and national organizations.

“My dad was given a Guernsey calf when I was young,” David said. “Eventually, we transitioned the whole herd to registered Guernseys.”

Both David and Donna credit their dedication to the industry to their upbringing and careers in 4-H. “Why I got interested, I don’t know, but I liked it and wanted to get more involved,” David said.

Through the youth organization, both David and Donna developed a passion for the show ring – for the cattle and people.

In 1973, David attended his rst Minnesota State Fair as a showman in the

“We don’t sh, we don’t hunt, but we do things other people don’t do – we go to the state fair and show cows,” David said. “It’s always been a love for our kids and the cows.”

Donna’s experience in the ring began at the same time, when she exhibited at World Dairy Expo.

“Since then, I’ve shown on the colored shavings every year,” said Donna, who grew up on a Guernsey farm in Illinois.

The cattle show in Madison, Wis., is where the Andersons rst met and have since exhibited cattle worthy of titles including all-American, reserve grand champion of the junior show, total performance cow, junior best three females, and most memorable, the 1987 Grand Champion of the International Guernsey Show with Wagners Big Tex Bonnie.

“Over the years, we’ve been competitive across the board with our quality of cattle,” Donna said.

However, the Andersons contributions to the industry go far beyond the noted accomplishments in the show ring.

Since David and Donna took over David’s family farm as the sixth generation in 1985, the Andersons have further developed their herd and purpose in the industry – breeding exceptional quality

While Donna, Kevin and Karen, with the help of other dairy producers, cared for the 16 cattle at the show, David stayed at home with the remainder of the herd.

“Being the showcase herd is a lot more work than it looks, but we got it done and it was great for the kids,” David said.

Donna agreed.

“It was also a great opportunity to educate people about dairy,” she said.

Up The Creek Farm has also been displayed in a closed setting, when David and Donna hosted tours for the National Guernsey Convention in 2001 and 2016.

The involvement does not stop with the animals in the barn. Over the years, Donna has served as a 4-H coordinator, has partook in

several roles within the Minnesota Guernsey Breeders Association, and recently completed her fouryear term as national director for the American Guernsey Association.

Because of these interactions, the dairy industry has served as an extended family for the Andersons.

“We know them all, and we enjoy talking about cattle,” David said. “The time always seems to go too fast.”

While the accolades are numerous for the Andersons, what lies beneath those awards are humility and compassion for the Guernsey breed and dairy industry as a whole.

And when one day ends and another begins, the focus remains on the cows.

Brooks, Hischkes share their setups on panel at Form-A-Feed Conference

MORTON, Minn. – Producers were able to ask questions about contrasting calf raising facilities during a panel discussion Jan. 19 at the Form-A-Feed Professional Dairy Conference at Jackpot Junction in Morton, Minn.

Videos of Brooks Farm and Sunrise Dairy introduced the operations.

Luke and Kayla Hischke, in partnership with Luke’s father and uncle, operate Sunrise Dairy near Suring, Wis. The farm milks 1,350 cows on two sites, with 2,800 animals total.

Zoey Brooks and her father, Ron, operate Brooks Farm, a 1,600-acre dairy and crop farm in Waupaca, Wis. An animal science graduate of UW-Madison, Zoey spent a year promoting Wisconsin agriculture as the 67th Alice in Dairyland. Brooks Farm is currently expanding from 250 to 700 Holstein cows. Two FFA students work on the farm and receive credit as student employees. All youngstock is raised on the farm.

Sunrise Dairy Calves are raised in individual pens in a 60- by 250foot barn that holds 200 calves in individual pens. The barn was built with both the comfort of people and animals in mind.

“We thought of automatic feeding but stuck with individual pens as we felt we had more control of sanitation. My wife and mom both said, ‘If you want me to feed calves, they’ll be inside,’” Luke said.

The barn features natural ventilation supplemented with air tubes, a Milk Taxi portable pasteurizer for feeding, and a scale for recording birth and weaning weights.

“Calves do amazing with the consistency of mixing and temperature,” Kayla said about their portable pasteurizer.

Two calf feeders work on different days, but both work on Wednesday – weaning day – allowing for good communication.

One gallon of colostrum is fed within the rst hour.

If the cow does not produce enough, the calf is given colostrum milk replacer. Calves are fed 10 or 12 ounces two or three times a day, depending on age. Starting day one, calves are given a 20 percent starter coated with liquid molasses, with waste grain going to the transition barn.

Gradually towards weaning, calves are given a mix of the 20-percent protein starter and an 18 percent protein starter. If a calf is not eating ve pounds of grain a day at weaning it is held back. No dry hay is fed to calves, with TMR started at four months; over a two-week period, calves are switched from straight grain to straight TMR. Kayla and two employees are in charge of raising calves. Kayla uses a white board to indicate factors such as what to feed and the number of calves. In her calf protocols, Kayla strives for consistency, especially for feeding times and temperatures.

Colored bands indicate feeding amounts according to age.

Protocols are posted in the calf ofce each day for employees – how to feed milk, grain, protein, a newborn or a sick calf. It is all the guidelines of what to do if Kayla is not there. Medical charts are kept for each calf, with identication, birth date, feedings, shots, birth weight and any treatments.

Calves are weighed upon arrival, and again at weaning, which starts at 45 days. The Hischkes strive for an average daily rate of gain between 1.7 and 2.0.

Each calf’s pen is bedded with wheat straw with sawdust on top.

Because there are no growth scales available for Jersey-Holstein crossbreds, Kayla is trying to establish averages according to their herd. They also use Montbéliarde as a third breed in the crossbred rotation. Animals are measured with a hip stick at birth, six-months, and one year.

The farm has a 1 to 2 percent calf mortality rate.

Dehorning takes place at about four weeks using a propane burner.

“It takes under two minutes and is not a lot of stress, we do it right after a feeding,” Kayla said.

Luke said they have had to make changes to their facility because of improper design. The 14-inch air tubes were replaced with 30-inch tubes, and the slope of the concrete was wrong.

“Make sure of the little details, that the drawings are right,” Luke said.

That hasn’t been the only challenge.

“Dad did a wonderful job handing it down. We do lots of talking, but we butt heads sometimes,” Luke said.

But, taking care of calves is a big job, in which they want to excel.

“I think of the calves as children. The more details the better. Watch for things that are ‘off,’” Kayla said. “The calves are the future cow, we have to get them off to a good start. I did a lot of trials.”

Brooks Farm The calf barn, built in September 2015, features four pens with automatic feeders, an automated ventilation system and a nursery room for newborns. The family is pleased with its new calf barn, getting better results than it did with individual pens.

The nursery room uses four calf crates. Calves spend ve to seven days in the room. They are dried with hand towels, vaccinated and given an ear tag in each ear.

They also have their naval dipped with iodine, are weight taped and get colostrum.

The room has in-oor heating, which makes the crate like a large warming box.

With concerns about airow and air quality, the room uses heat exchangers to provide four air changes per hour. Incoming air is warmed. When calves are moved from the crates, the crates are rolled out, power washed, sanitized and allowed to sit in the sun for several weeks before being used again. A paste with a patch is used for dehorning when the calves are moved from the crate to the rst pen.

The main barn has four pens bedded with wheat straw, with a robotic feeding system that has one feeder for each pen.

Calves have access to unpasteurized whole milk 24 hours a day. Through experimentation, Zoey determined 10 liters per day

is the best amount to feed their calves and found 15 percent to be the best solids/total protein percentage. She adds balancer to bring it to 15 percent. Calves are healthier, have less scouring and grow better, she said. They’ve also learned thoroughly sanitizing all equipment is important.

In addition to drinking milk, calves have access to a 20 percent starter coated with liquid molasses once they reach the rst pen. The Brookses aim for calves to eat three pounds of grain per day by weaning. The weaning process is started at 45 days. Hay is given starting at nine weeks and is mixed in with their ration.

The farm practices the ve C’s of calf care – colostrum, cleanliness, comfort, consistency and calories.

When it comes to feeding colostrum, Zoey said using a refractometer has helped.

“It took a lot of convincing with my dad. You can’t score colostrum visually.

Bring technology in and utilize it,” she said.

Milk from the rst and second milkings are saved and scored with the refractometer. If it scores above 22, it is fed to the calf.

“We prefer having them suck on nipple, but we tube them if they don’t,” Zoey said.

The farm aims for at least a two-pound average daily gain for each calf. It currently averages 2.0 to 2.5 pounds each day in the new facility – double the rate in the old facility.

“We push a lot of milk through these calves, but it’s paying off,” Zoey said.

When they started using the facility, death lost was at .67 percent, but is now down to zero.

Although they are seeing the benets of the new facility, there are a few things they would change if given the chance.

Zoey said they would prefer to have an all-in, all-out facility so calves could stay in one pen. Also, positive pressure tubes that were designed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and hooked to a vent genie, control curtains, doors and fans. Although university experts didn’t like the idea of keeping newborns in a contained room, the heat exchanger has allowed good conditions in that room.

“We’re very detail oriented, we pay attention to details. We aren’t spending extra time cleaning pails. We use our time to walk the pens, to score calves,” Zoey said.

Although the new building has changed their type of work, the amount of labor has not, Zoey said.

“I spend more time in the barn now.

It’s a shift in labor, monitoring the calves, cleaning, going through records,” she said.

The barn and caring for calves have been her project since returning.

“When I rst came back, the rst month, the calf barn was plopped into my lap. My dad let me gure it out. I knew maybe too much by the book. We still butt heads, but that’s where you grow and learn the business. Conict comes down to trying to make it better—conict is good,” she said.

Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery eligible for tax credits, plans to add 28,500 square feet

ELLSWORTH, Wis. – The cheese curd capital of Wisconsin is about to see even more curds coming down the line.

Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery, through its partnership with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, is now eligible for up to $175,000 in state tax credits to add 28,500 feet to its processing facilities, which are currently producing 80 tons of cheese curds daily. “Wisconsin is the top cheese-producing state in the nation, and the success of businesses like the Ellsworth [Cooperative] Creamery is crucial to ensuring the industry remains strong,� said Mark Hogan, secretary and CEO

Tell us about the farm you currently operate. Our son, Branden, my dad Leonard, and I milk 56 Holstein, Milking Shorthorn and cross-bred cows. Our son, Derek, raises steers on the farm. Michelle works in town. The farm is 280 acres and we rent another 200 acres. We grow corn, oats and alfalfa. We all do the eldwork.

How did you get into farming? We grew up on a dairy farm near Rothsay, Minn., and moved out here in 1993.

How did you get into farming? I am the oldest of three children of Leonard and Rosemary Hatlestad. We grew up on a dairy farm by Rothsay. We moved to a bigger dairy farm by Fergus Falls in 1993. We were very active in 4-H, showing cattle at the county fair, Region 3 Dairy Days, and state fair. I was a dairy princess for Wilkin County. I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Crookston with an associate degree in dairy science/production.

I came home and helped on the dairy farm for seven years. I am past president of the county and regional ADA Association. I met and married John Hanson, a dairy farmer.

How often do you and your brother talk about dairying? Being that my brother and I live 39 miles apart, we don’t visit a lot about dairying. We mainly talk to Mom and Dad about farming. John’s family lives close by and we work together.

What are the beneďƒžts of having family members involved in the industry? We are able to plan family gatherings around chores.

What is one fundamental philosophy you learned growing up and still stand by on your farm? Farming is about the good and bad. Some days are great and some are not.

What piece of technology/equipment do you have now that you wished you had growing up? Two things come to mind. We

had bucket milkers growing up. Boy, did they seem heavy, and we had to carry the milk to the milkhouse and dump it in the milk strainer. The pipeline milking is so much easier.

Now we have thrower hay racks. They would have been nice on hot days when we had to pile bales on racks behind the baler.

What’s a highlight for you and your dairy each year? Having healthy animals and having healthy calves born, so Matt and Jenny could name them and help take care of them.

What does the dairy industry mean to you? We are so lucky to have our children grow up with the cattle and work as a family together along with having whole milk to drink.

Besides family, who else do you network with about dairy topics? We work with our vet for the cattle. We also talk to our milkman, creamery people, retired dairy farmers and active dairy farmers in our area.

Butter production active in Central region

March cheese prices went out like a lion. CME cheese saw a big move to the upside Thursday and Friday, despite a fair amount of product ďƒžnding its way to Chicago but driven in part by demand for fresh cheese and anticipated increasing exports.

The Cheddar blocks marched to $1.52 per pound the last Friday of the month, 8 cents higher on the week, 5 cents above a year ago, and 3 cents above where it was on March 1. The barrels ďƒžnished at $1.47, up 8 cents on the week, 1 1/2-cents above a year ago, and a half-cent above its March 1 price. Nineteen cars of block traded hands on the week and 38 of barrel.

The dairy market was looking for some direction this week as there was only one USDA report issued that it regularly monitors, namely the Ag Prices report. Demand for barrel cheese is expected to increase as cheeseburgers ďƒžnd their way back to the barbecue, but traders were also anticipating Friday afternoon’s USDA Prospective Plantings report, in view of the higher feed prices noted in the Ag Prices report, and were anticipating the April 4 Global Dairy Trade auction.

Milk continues to be available to cheesemakers in the Midwest, according to Dairy Market News (DMN). Reports from some point to an inability to take on any extra spot milk. Spot milk prices have been reported from $1 to $4 under Class. Cheese production, with the exception of some plant updates/maintenance, has been active. Reports on domestic demand range from steady to increasing.

Whey and lactose interest, both domestically and internationally, is also trending up for Midwestern cheesemakers, according to DMN. Inventory reports vary for cheese. Some producers are comfortable with current stocks, while others have started to sell discounted spot cheese in order to maintain inventory levels. The market tone is “uncertain.�

Western cheese output also continues to be active. Milk volumes are plentiful and clearing into cheese vats. Some contacts believe that the spring ďƒ&#x;ush is right around the corner. A few cheese plants seem to be running below capacity, says DMN, but for the most part, they are operating at or near full capacity.

Cheese is moving well through contracts, but any additional demand is light. Orders for processed cheese are slower and some market participants are hoping for favorable spring weather to prompt the

summer grilling season. Barrel cheese supplies are abundant, somewhat due to additional manufacturing plants coming on line in other regions. Contacts suggest that warehouses are also getting ďƒžlled, and available storage space is hard to ďƒžnd. Block cheese inventories are termed ample.

FC Stone’s March 30 Early Morning Update echoed that, stating “New barrel capacity is hitting the market and that is evident in the sharp rise in the latest Ag Marketing Service (AMS) volumes.

The past 4 weeks AMS barrel cheese volumes have been above 13 million pounds per week whereas the last few years the volumes have been conďƒžned to roughly 9-11 million pounds per week.â€?

Spot butter saw a Friday ďƒžnish at $2.1075 per pound, up a penny on the week, 14 3/4-cents above a year ago, but down 12 1/2-cents from its March 1 perch. Six cars were sold on the week at the CME. Butter production is active in the Central region of the country, according to DMN. Cream is still available to butter producers and some continue to churn cream, then sell and or store the butter, in lieu of selling spot cream.

Butter demand varies. Some producers report that they are in the peak of spring holiday demand while others still expect stronger demand to come.

Reports on butter stocks point to a steadily growing availability and the butter market tone is generally steady.

Western butter makers also have access to plenty of cream, according to DMN, and are actively churning it into butter. However, as the spring holidays and summer approaches, more cream is getting used for ice cream and other Class II dairy products. Additional uses for the cream are mostly welcomed by butter manufacturers who are looking for ways to clear the excess cream. Butter demand is termed steady, but many end users are hesitant to take on any extra loads to put into warehouse as inventories are long.

DMN’s weekly cold storage data showed March 27 cheese stocks grew 10.5 million pounds or 12.1 percent from March 1 while the butter inventory was up 4.8 million pounds or 23.9 percent.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 80 cents per pound, down 2 cents on the week but 8 1/2-cents above a year ago, with three cars sold on the week.

Higher corn, soybean, and alfalfa hay prices and a lower All-Milk price served to pull the latest milk feed price ratio lower for the second month in a row. The February ratio, at 2.61, is down from 2.69 in January, but is up from 2.18 in February 2016, according to the Agriculture Department’s latest Ag Prices report.

relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration consisting of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. In other words, one pound of milk today purchases 2.61 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The February U.S. average All-Milk price was $18.50 per hundredweight (cwt.), down 40 cents from January but is $2.80 above February 2016.

Florida scored the highest, at $22.80 per cwt.

New Mexico had the lowest, at $17.10, down 80 cents from January but $2.50 above a year ago. Arizona was second lowest, with $17.20. California wasn’t much above that, at $17.44, down a dime from January but $3.12 above a year ago, and $1.56 below Wisconsin. The Badger State’s All Milk average was $19.00 per cwt., down 30 cents from January but $2.90 above a year ago.

February corn averaged $3.44 per bushel in the U.S., up 4 cents from January, following a 7 cent increase in January from December but is 14 cents per bushel below February 2016. Soybeans averaged $9.86 per bushel, up 15 cents from January, following a 7 cent increase in January, and is $1.35 per bushel above February 2016. Alfalfa hay averaged $129 per ton, up $1 from January but $8 per ton below a year ago.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the report shows the February cull price for beef and dairy cows combined averaged $64.90 per cwt., up 90 cents from January but $12.60 per cwt. below February 2016, and $6.70 below the 2011 base average of $71.60 per cwt.

The March 30 Daily Dairy Report says the Margin Protection Program’s feed cost formula shows that dairy producers spent $7.92 on feed, on average, to produce 100 pounds of milk in February, up 8 cents from January, but historically on the low side of monthly average feed costs. The JanuaryFebruary MPP margin averaged $10.82, exceeding the $8 per cwt. maximum coverage level.

Checking the demand side of things, the March 24 Dairy and Food Market Analyst (DFMA) reports that restaurant demand “continues to moderate.� “Foodservice sales rose by 4.2 percent year over year in February, according to Census Bureau data,� the DFMA stated. “This growth rate was below last year’s average increase of 5.9 percent.

Limited service sales (the cheese-friendly side of the business) were up 5.7 percent in January (latest data available), which was below the 6.1 percent growth rate in all of 2016.�

Why the slowdown, the DFMA asked. “For one, gasoline prices have rallied and were up 31 percent year over year in February. With fewer dollars left in the checkbook, consumers made fewer trips out to eat.�

The February Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all food was 248.8, no change from a year ago, according to the USDA. The dairy products index was 220.6, up 0.4 percent from a year ago. Fresh whole milk was up 0.7 percent; cheese was down 0.5 percent; and butter was down 1.4 percent.

Looking globally; Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted 21 requests for export assistance the last week of March from member cooperatives that had contracts to sell 2.381 million pounds of cheese plus 52,360 pounds of butter to customers in Asia and Oceania.

The product has been contracted for delivery through June and raised CWT’s 2017 sales to 21.483 million pounds of American-type cheeses and 1.427 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) to 12 countries on four continents.

Lots of eyes are on exports. FC Stone’s March 29 Early Morning Update made the point that “US prices have been lower than Oceania for three consecutive months. We haven’t seen that since the rst quarter of 2015 and we saw a subsequent spike in exports at that time, so a big jump in exports coming from the models makes sense when you look at the history. We have total cheese exports for 2017 up 27 percent from 2016, coming in just shy of the record high in 2014.”

One factor that affects exports is currency. The Update adds that; “Although the US dollar is still strong, the currency is going through a period of cooling off and that may help exports if that continues in Second Quarter.”

One other trade note; the Global Dairy Trade’s (GDT) Quarterly report shows that the GDT Price Index has risen 55 percent the past 12 months.

Anhydrous milkfat and butter showed the biggest gains, up 94 percent and 78 percent respectively.

Speaking of the GDT, Fonterra released its of-

fer volumes for next week’s event, according to FC Stone. “A total of 11,700 metric tons of whole milk powder WMP will be offered for both April events, down 20 percent from the last GDT. 5,360 MT of New Zealand origin skim milk powder will be offered which is up nearly 50 percent from the last auction. The market has been concerned if the rise in volumes have been entirely reective of the increased NZ milk production.”

“Fonterra’s seasonal milk production forecast was initially close to down 7 percent although is now pointing towards being down 3 percent for the season. The last few GDT product offering forecast increases are thought to be accurate given the better milk production,” FC Stone concludes.

DMN reports that dairy producers in Australia continue to benet from good pasture conditions which has slowed interest in purchasing hay. Also

benetting producers is decreasing prices for water.

But, concerns lie ahead associated with expectations of autumn being hotter and drier than desired.

For now however, cow culling rates have slowed.

Dairy Australia reported February milk production was down 10 percent from February 2016.

New Zealand’s February milk production totaled 1.91 million metric tons, down from 2.41 million MT in January and down from 1.97 million a year ago.

DMN reported that a dairy processor from China is now expanding a processing plant in New Zealand. The addition, will include UHT capacity, an infant formula canning line, blending facilities, and a whole milk powder dryer. The company says it’s actively working with farmers in the district to augment its milk supply to meet its growing production needs.

Global Dairy Trade (GDT) event 185 concluded today with the index settling at 1.6% more than the previous event driven by a stronger performance in whole milk powder (WMP). WMP accounted for nearly half of the auction’s volume. SMP continues to track lower as it tries to play catch-up with even lower prices from the United States and Europe. U.S. cheese exports improved in February, according to the latest data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. In total, the United States exported 58 million pounds of cheese in February, up 12% from the prior year, after adjusting for leap year, and 29% more than January on a daily average basis. Fresh cheese exports rose to 19.1 million pounds, 22% more than the prior year driven by higher volumes to several countries including South Korea and China.

There was one notable exception; volumes to Mexico were 49.5% less this year relative to last year. Cheddar cheese exports improved as well, up nearly 14% vs. the previous year. Nonfat dry milk (NDM) and SMP exports in February were up 30.6% from the prior year, after adjusting for leap year. In fact, February exports, on a daily average basis, have not been this high since

Sexed semen should get better, cheaper, and more widely used after a U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin found in favor of UK-based Genus, the parent company of ABS Global verses industry rival Sexing Technologies, owned by Inguran. Genus’s victory allows ABS Global to launch its market-ready Genus Sexed Semen (GSS) program. In August 2016, a jury verdict found that Sexing Technologies willfully maintained monopoly power in the market for sexed bovine semen processing in the United States since July 2012. The latest decision provides Genus a permanent injunction confirming the jury verdict.

In addition, the court has now prevented Sexing Technologies from enforcing certain research, marketing, and non-compete restrictions under the 2012 Semen Sorting Agreement it has with ABS. As a result, other bull stud operations in the United States may terminate their Sexing Technologies sexed semen processing agreements with 12 months notice, without damage or penalty. According to the decision, the injunction will remain in force for Àve years and Sexing Technologies is required by the court to provide prompt written notice of the court’s decision to the other bull studs.

As a result, competitors in the sexed semen industry will likely devote more resources to researching and developing better products.

U.S. butter stocks set a new record level for February. Rising milk production in February translated into output growth in nearly all dairy products. Total U.S. cheese output climbed to 942 million pounds. Robust milk production east of the Rocky Mountains continued to keep cheese vats occupied and expectations are for even heavier cheese output as milk production increases seasonally this spring. May 2015. Despite widespread concerns about potential disruptions to Mexico, exports in February increased 56.3 million pounds, an astounding 38% more than the prior year. Overall, U.S. exports performed well in February; in fact, they may have performed better than expected. Still, there is quite a bit of milk in the United States and it is rising. Looking ahead, if exports are unable to keep up with the rising tide of milk output, they likely may not be strong enough to keep the market in balance.

Going the distance Mesmans pasture graze in Washington

MT. VERNON, Wash. – When Chelsy Mesman attended the National 4-H Dairy Conference in 2009, she never anticipated how it would change her life. The New Glarus, Wis., native was introduced to another high school senior, Ben, attending the conference from Washington, who would later become her husband. Eight years later, Chelsy, Ben and their 16-month-old son, John, are milking 110 cows on their certied organic dairy farm near Mt. Vernon, Wash.

Chelsy recalled the day she met Ben and the beginning stages of their relationship.

“We were both attending the National 4-H Dairy Conference during World Dairy Expo,” Chelsy said.

“We met during an awkward set of ice breakers and as the saying goes, the rest is history.”

Despite the nearly 2,000 miles that separated them, the couple dated while Chelsy attended UW-Platteville. Ben moved to Wisconsin where he began helping her parents raise show heifers and raise 70 acres of crops.

After marrying in August 2014, the Mesmans made their move to Ben’s family farm near Mt. Vernon where they continue to farm today. At about 8 feet below sea level, Chelsy said it did not take long to notice differences be-

tween farming along the Pacic coast and farming in the Midwest.

“It is very, very wet,” Chelsy said.

“The waterlines run only a foot under the ground, unlike six-feet underground in Wisconsin.”

The dairy converted to certied organic in 2006. Ben said it was a decision his family made to remain competitive in their area.

“We are a smaller dairy in this area trying to compete with larger farms,” Ben said. “We found this niche that would help us compete with higher milk prices, so we didn’t have to expand and could still remain in business. Since we already pastured, we were already almost there. It was an easy transition.”

At the time, the family was milking in a swing-8 herringbone parlor. After a trusted employee of 21 years resigned, Ben said changes had to be made to continue milking cows.

“It is very hard to nd farm labor in Washington state; there are not many farm kids or farm-related people available,” Ben said. “We felt that robots would be best for us because they are always there, always on time.”

After touring several robotic dairies in Canada, Ben said they realized their setup would have to be a little different than most.

“We looked at a lot of free-ow systems, but that wouldn’t work for us rotational grazing,” Ben said. “Our robots are fully-guided.”

Yearlong mild temperatures make farming comfortable for dairy cows.

With 75 to 80-degree weather considered a hot summer, Chelsy said they do not see the uctuation in production that farmers often experience in the Midwest.

“In the Midwest, there are extreme colds in the winter and extremely humid days in the summer; here, the weather is mild and provides very good conditions for cows,” Chelsy said. “The barns are fairly open, and we don’t see production dip down between the seasons.”

The open freestall barn is a pole building without sidewalls. Stalls are bedded with sawdust, which is a common bedding material for dairies in Washington state.

“We are a big timber state. There are a lot of r trees in the area, so we are able to get the bi-product of sawdust for a good price from the mills,” Ben said.

On average, the Mesmans said they see yearly rainfall totals between 32 and 36 inches. Due to a high water table and consistently overcast skies, however, wet conditions make raising crops a challenge.

“We cannot grow alfalfa on this side of the state, so we have to buy a lot from the Midwest or on the eastern part of Washington where it is warmer and

drier,” Ben said. “The problem with that is that most hay grown in Washington and Oregon is exported to Japan, so we are competing for in-state alfalfa with the export market.”

However, the moisture is benecial for grass growth, making the area ideal for pasture grazing.

“Pasturing goes really well here,” Ben said. “We do a lot of grass silage and balage, as well. We can get good tonnage on quality grass. Because of the moisture, the elds are almost subirrigated, so we don’t have to worry about irrigation in the summers, either.”

In addition to their roles as farmers and parents, Chelsy has also started to share their farm story through social media. She began Organic Dairy Mama, a lifestyle blog and Facebook page to share updates about the farm and dairy industry.

“I am always in conversations with people about my lifestyle,” Chelsy said.

“I started blogging a little less than a year ago to get my voice out about how we farm. Unlike back home, a lot of people in this area come from non-farm backgrounds.”

Neither Ben nor Chelsy expected the impact a trip to the National 4-H Dairy Conference would have on their lives. From an icebreaker activity in Madison to beginning a family in Northwestern Washington, they are thankful to have found a shared love of cows and of one another.

Seven Iowa cows commemorated in hall of breeds Fresh graphics, updated nutrition information at Iowa’s Dairy Center

CALMAR, Iowa – Cooperstown, N.Y., has the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Canton, Ohio, is home to the football counterpart. Meanwhile, Calmar, Iowa, has the hall of breeds.

It’s where some of the top dairy cows with Iowa connections are commemorated. And it really, truly is a hall.

The hall of breeds is at Iowa’s Dairy Center, just outside the small town of Calmar, Iowa.

The hallway connects the educational wing of the center’s building to the dairy barn, home to working herds of Holsteins and

Jerseys.

Painted cow hoofprints on the hall’s oor lead visitors past images of notable bovines. Seven breeds are represented – Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn, and Red and White. All the images are just a tad smaller than life-sized.

“With all the information we wanted to include, we really couldn’t make them any bigger,” said Megan Kregel, dairy center coordinator for the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation, which operates the dairy center.

Such a parade of cows isn’t new. It’s the second version at the center, replacing the one ini-

tiated in 2000, when the center was founded. Back then, Jim Hosch, an Extension agent in Clayton County, spearheaded the effort to commemorate cows in a hall of breeds.

This time around, Kregel is the project’s leader. By the time the original cow images were 15 years old, time had noticeably taken its toll. The cow outlines, made of plastic, were faded and coming apart. What’s more, only two of those original cows hailed from Iowa.

The Dairy Foundation decided it was time for a remake of the hall, complete with fresh graphics and new cows. So, Iowa’s breed associations were asked to nominate cows to be recognized in the famed hall.

After the nominations were collected, members of the breed associations were asked to vote on which cows’ images they wanted up on the walls to represent the Hawkeye State.

“We left open to interpretation what an Iowa cow was – whether she was bred and owned, whether she was just

bred (in Iowa) and whether she was purchased and brought into the state,” Kregel said. “This really was a state effort by all the breed associations. These cows are not only Iowa cows, but Iowa cows chosen by Iowa dairy producers.”

The project’s next phase was producing and installing the cows’ likenesses and facts and gures about them. A graphic design rm worked with professionally done photographs of the animals, making wallpaper that resembles weathered barn boards.

The updated hall of breeds project began in 2015 and was nished in early March of this year. Included in the work was a remake of the nearby dairy nutrition room. “[Before, that room was] really, four posters on a wall,” Kregel said. “[Now it’s full of] fun learning materials and graphics, oor to ceiling. It’s a great environment for kids to learn in now.”

the names of some of the cows that grace the walls of the hall of breeds. Representing the Ayrshires is Right Angle T Harley, bred by Right Angle Ayrshires in Delhi, Iowa, and owned by Ski Pal Ayrshires in Epworth, Iowa, and Yarrabee Cows in Brooklyn, Iowa.

The Brown Swiss representative is Onword Combo Viola, bred and owned by Dennis Worden’s Onword Swiss in Oelwein, Iowa.

For the Guernseys, the hall’s representative is Prairie Moon Y Antebella. She was bred and owned by Prairie Moon Guernseys in Waukon, Iowa.

Snow-N-Denises Dellia-ET represents the Holsteins. Dellia was bred by Robert Snow in Viroqua, Wis., and was owned

by Regancrest Farm in Waukon, Iowa.

Jerseys have as their representative Lyon Character. She was bred and owned by Lyon Jerseys in Toledo, Iowa.

Two of those classic cows – Right Angle T Harley and SnowN-Denises Dellia-ET – are still alive, Kregel said.

Whether they are still here or gone, the seven cows are famous in their own right, Kregel said.

“The Guernsey cow has never been beat, I don’t think, in the show ring. The Brown Swiss, Viola, all of her progeny became foundations for multiple produc-

er herds. Dellia, the Holstein, is the dam of (the sire) Durham,” she said. “Every single one of them has the absolute right to be up on that wall. They’re all special.”

Kregel said the hall of breeds is about so much more than the cows.

“It’s also about the producers behind them,” she said.

The new, bright and bold hall of breeds would not have been created without the support of many people and organizations from across the state. A grant to get the design process started was provided by the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area.

All tallied, the project cost over $70,000, Kregel said.

Colorful, large graphics on the nutrition center’s walls explore a variety of themes. One, for example, is the journey milk takes as it goes from cow to store. Another theme is lactose intolerance. The nine essential nutrients milk provides are pointed out, as are the benets derived from drinking chocolate milk.

Out in the hallway, dairy

memorabilia dating back decades is on display. Butter churns, vintage milkers and historic photographs join forces to tell the story of Iowa dairying over the course of many years.

The new-and-improved hall of breeds and nutrition room turned out well, in Kregel’s estimation.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” she said.

“I couldn’t be happier. I think we’re fortunate to have such great producers and great cows.”

Organic dairy pastures

The Midwest is a geographical area favored by adequate rainfall where temperate pasture plants of high-quality and digestibility dominate. Pastures for dairy production require high-producing and highquality forages because of the abovenormal nutritional needs demanded by dairy cattle. To achieve and maintain the quality and quantity of forages, whether conventional or organic, species selection and grazing management are key and powerful tools. Organic pasture farmers, in addition to using these resources, have to comply with the National Organic Program (NOP) Pasture Rule in order to maintain certication. Compliance to the Pasture Rule means animals must graze pasture during the growing season, have year-round access to outdoors, and roughages used for bedding need to be certied organic. In the end, organic dairy pastures and grazing management will provide a pasture-based product that is in growing demand.

What species make for a good dairy pasture? A good forage resource will include a mixture of adapted forage species while taking advantage of non-traditional resources. The options include several perennial and annual cool-season grasses, forbs, and palatable weeds. Let’s review

briey the main characteristics of these species.

Perennial and annual ryegrass – these bunch grasses are top ranking among cool-season grasses for digestible ber, making them an excellent dairy pasture choice. Long-term use has been limited by low winterhardiness but improved varieties are entering the market.

Smooth bromegrass – a perennial winterhardy, high-yielding grass adapted to well-drained soils and is drought and heat tolerant.

Orchardgrass – a perennial bunch grass adapted to a wide range of soils with good moisture. Aggressive and used in intensive frequent grazing; susceptible to close grazing.

Meadow fescue – superior palatability. Well-adapted to the driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois, northeastern Iowa, and southeastern Minnesota, where it has survived for over 100 years.

Festulolium – a hybrid cross between ryegrasses and fescues combining the high-quality and palatability from ryegrasses with the environmental stress tolerances provided by fescues, without harmful effects from fungi present in tall fescue. A day in the life on Rick Lundgren’s farm Spring weather sparks cleaning, maintenance March 30

RANDALL, Minn. – The morning of March 30 began as every other day at Rick Lundgren’s dairy farm, but the to-do list was growing with every ticking second.

Lundgren and his wife, Donna, own and operate a

dairy farm, milking 95 cows in Morrison County near Randall, Minn., with the help of full-time employees Jamison Henderson and Nicole Meyer.

As the sun peaked over the horizon and the frost lifted from the ground, Lundgren, Henderson and Meyer knew March 30 was going to be a busy day. The agenda

ing gears and we’re ready to go.”

Lundgren is the third generation in his family to manage the dairy operation, a responsibility he took on in 1979.

The farm began with 35 milking cows, and over time the tiestall has been renovated and expanded to hold the current herd.

“As we’ve gotten bigger, the help has been nice,” Lundgren said. “I sure feel pretty lucky that way.”

Every morning begins at 5:45, with Meyer and Henderson arriving at the dairy. As Lundgren helps Meyer start in the barn, milking the treated cows, Henderson prepares feed.

“These two have been great help,” said Lundgren of Meyer and Henderson. “They really take the pressure off me so that I don’t have to be in so many places.”

Henderson has worked with Lundgren for seven years, having grown up in the area and spending time on the farm as a child.

“My whole family has worked around here,” Henderson said. “I grew up picking rocks on this farm. Rick is like a father gure to me.”

Meyer grew up nearby, too. She began working with Lundgren last summer, although she previously helped on occasion while in school, and is

responsible for the recordkeeping of the milking herd – when cows are bred, calve and any other health events.

“I got into the dairy industry when I was 15,” Meyer said. “Now, I milk cows every day, twice a day.”

When Meyer and Henderson are unavailable, Lundgren receives help from his daughter, Kayla Sandbakken and her husband, Wade, and neighbors Michael Fritz and Marty Block.

“Everyone stepped up this winter when I had knee surgery, which was greatly appreciated,” Lundgren said.

As the morning continued and Meyer nished milking the last few cows in the barn, Lundgren made a pass in front of the stalls with silage and Henderson fed the dry cows, youngstock and newborn calves.

“With Nicole and Jamison, it all just clicks,” Lundgren said. “We all know our jobs and really don’t say much during the day; we just get everything done.”

Meyer agreed.

“We all know we have our own place to be and are experts in our own responsibilities,” she said.

By 9 a.m., the morning chores were complete and Lundgren, Henderson and Meyer cleaned the barn before heading their separate ways for a quick breakfast.

“Last fall I battled with wet weather and was combining corn in January. Surprisingly, the corn did well and it was a good harvest, but long,” Lundgren said.

“I’d like to see the rain, but it has to dry out once in a

while, too.”

With the constant go of the afternoon, all tasks were completed in time for Lundgren to run to town before evening fell.

Despite the hectic schedule farming often presents, Lundgren looks forward to every day.

Solar power systems can work in Upper Midwest

MADISON, Wis. – Making electricity while the sun shines is becoming a popular practice on more and more farms.

He talked about onfarm solar energy usage March 16 during the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) conference in Madison, Wis. With photovoltaics, light is converted into electricity. The process is made possible by using semiconducting materials.

Panels containing semiconducting materials are positioned so they can absorb the sun’s rays. Such panels are typically 42 inches wide (3.5 feet) and 60 inches (ve feet) long.

es for many of these panels, Wehling said. That’s because farms often have plenty of rooftop space for mounting them.

Alternatively, solar panels can be mounted as stand-alone, racking systems, Wehling said. Again, farms usually have places for such solar arrays – at the edges of elds, along driveways and in pastures.

Whether the panels are mounted on roofs or on racks on the ground, two objectives are paramount: Choose a south-facing location and keep shade off the panels. Wehling said that means taking into account the nearness of such things as trees, hills, buildings and silos. It’s also a good idea to place the solar array 500 feet or closer to the farm’s electric service panel to keep costs down.

If a rooftop site is being considered, try to use one that’s newer and made of metal, Wehling said. Reroong a building that has solar panels on it will not be easy.

Wehling said a roof with an angle of 35 to 40 degrees is best for capturing the most sunlight.

Also, will the roof support the weight of the panels? Is there a chance dust from a eld or gravel road might cover them. How

about debris, such as leaves or stray bits of silage?

A stand-alone system on its own rack eliminates roof worries. But it introduces others.

Think about ways to manage vegetation, such as weeds, around the panels. Leave room to mow or spray.

And be prepared to spend more for a racking system. Wehling pegged the extra cost at about 25 cents per watt of electricity produced.

A 9.18-kilowatt (KW) system requires 34 panels, Wehling said. That means the racks for those panels will cost approximately $2,300.

Prices for PV panels vary. But Wehling said a 34-panel system can produce about 11,000 KW a year, a bit more than its rating.

It’s still too expensive to try to store solar electricity in batteries, Wehling said. That means the solar system will need to be hooked to the commercial power grid.

Excess electricity – more than the farm uses – goes to the grid, making it serve as a battery. When more power is needed, it’s pulled from the grid. That means the solar array is not operating when there’s a power outage.

When it comes to keeping track of the amount of electricity being taken from the grid or being put into it, annual, net metering is best,

during months of low production. At the end of each year, the farmer and the utility settle the bill.

Wehling advised checking with the power company before investing in solar electricity-producing equipment. Find out how much it will pay for excess KW from a solar power system.

“Many companies pay at the avoided cost, (the cost of supplying the power on its own), which might be two or three cents per kilowatt,” Wehling said. “Some companies pay the retail rate.”

That rate might be 12 to 15 cents per KW. When calculating the size of a solar power system, match the farm’s annual kilowatt usage, Wehling said.

“There’s no advantage to oversizing a system unless you’re receiving the retail rate for excess kilowatts,” he said.

Wehling strongly advised letting someone who professionally deals with solar power system do the math when it comes to sizing and other details.

An Upper Midwest farm can’t generate as much solar electricity as a sunnier locale such as parts of Arizona or New Mexico, but Wehling assured his listeners solar panels can be cost effective.

He said the cost of such a solar system ranges between $2.75 and $3.00 per watt. But that’s before collecting rebates, incentives and grants. Overall, he said most farm and residential systems can pay for themselves in ve to 12 years.

Wehling directed his listeners to their electricity suppliers to nd out about the various grants, tax credits and other incentives that are available. He said a good source of information for Wisconsin residents is Focus on Energy, a program funded by all the utilities.

CEO, NMPF That’s exactly the place we nd ourselves in as discussions begin on the 2018 farm bill. A reliance on CBO budget projections that were wrong right out of the gate – they missed the mark in both the rst two full years of the program – has resulted in a program in need of improvement to become the safety net it was envisioned to be.

The good news is that National Milk’s members have developed a carefully-calibrated series of changes that will patch the holes in this new federal safety net, restoring it to its original form, so that it will have value to farmers.

The dwindling participation between 2015 and 2017 in the MPP’s supplemental coverage option paints a clear picture of the current shortcoming. Farmers’ use of the MPP – which enables them to insure the margin between milk prices and feed costs, paying premiums for increasing levels of coverage – has declined because the program underestimates their true feed costs.

In 2015, the MPP’s rst full year, 56 percent of dairy farmers elected to pay premiums to purchase coverage above the bare-bones $4 margin level. But even with the higher coverage levels selected by many farmers, who paid $73 million in premiums that year, MPP issued only miniscule payouts, amounting to less than $1 million. This was despite the fact that actual margins were tight in 2015. The program’s enrollees experienced a similar frustration last year, again paying millions more in premiums than the program returned to participants, even though just 23 percent purchased supplemental coverage.

This year, only 8 percent of the farms, producing just 2 percent of the milk supply, are paying premiums for enhanced coverage.

The takeaway from this situation is that there is a profound mismatch between farmer needs and expectations, and the usefulness of the Margin Protection Program. And, because much of the structure of the MPP is written into the 2014 Farm Bill, it will take congressional action to rectify the program’s shortcomings.

The MPP’s limitations are an issue affecting the entire dairy sector, not just the farmers using the program.

Without an effective safety net to better manage risk, both milk production and milk prices are likely to be as volatile as they’ve been for the past 15 years. This unpredictability becomes a challenge for the entire value chain: cooperatives, processors, retailers and ultimately, consumers.

NMPF has engaged in a top-to-bottom review of the MPP during the past six months, culminating in March with a decision by the NMPF Board to rec-

ommend changes in four key areas that will revitalize the MPP. These include: • Restoring the original feed cost formula rst proposed by NMPF. The feed formula assigns a value to corn, soybean meal and alfalfa hay in order to capture the national average cost of feeding dairy cattle. But, that formula was cut by 10 percent due to the erroneous budget forecast by CBO. This decision has resulted in USDA-reported margins that are almost $1 per hundredweight higher than they would be under the original blueprint. I told the House Agriculture Committee at a hearing last month the proposal was right the rst time, and the MPP should revert to the original feed formula. We’re also asking that Congress work with the USDA to evaluate the pricing data used for corn, soybean meal, hay, and the allmilk price – all of which should be rened to more closely match the margin conditions experienced across the country.

• Improving the affordability of the program’s premiums. The cost of premiums should be adjusted to incentivize increased farmer participation in the program, but this must be done in such a fashion that overall MPP budget costs remain reasonable. To be an effective safety net the program needs to enable more robust participation than the current 8 percent of farms opting for supplemental coverage. This is not an encouraging participation level for a program of this importance.

• Making payments and annual enrollment more farmer-friendly. Currently, the program calculates margins every other month, rather than monthly.

This is a small change that would also

boost participation. Likewise, rather than closing the annual enrollment window in the summer, farmers should have until the end of the year prior to the coming calendar year in which to make enrollment decisions. This another small convenience that enhances the ability of farmers to use the MPP properly.

• Expanding the use of the Livestock Gross Margin Program with the MPP. Under current law, dairy farmers must choose either the MPP, or the Livestock Gross Margin (LGM) program to manage their risks – even though the programs are complementary, not duplicative. The LGM works well for some farmers, and modest improvements to it, along with changes to the MPP, would greatly expand the risk management safety net available to dairy producers.

Taken together, these proposals will have a modest budget impact – indeed, how could they not, when right now more revenue is owing to the government from farmers’ premiums than the MPP is returning to enrollees? Fortunately, the leaders of the House Agriculture Committee have acknowledged that the farm bill priority of Congress should be to rst develop the proper policy, and then allocate resources to properly implement that policy.

Right now, instead, the budget tail is wagging the dog, which is the wrong way to formulate a viable dairy program, and not what farmers need and deserve. By applying these lessons learned, Congress can x the MPP in the upcoming farm bill and we will have a viable, and effective, dairy safety net for the future.

Producers search for new processors as Grassland drops accounts

On April 1, producers throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota received letters from their processor, Grassland Dairy Products Inc., notifying them that beginning May 1, their milk would not be accepted.

This was not an April Fools’ Day joke.

In the letter, the Wisconsin-based dairy cooperative attributed the cut in milk intake due to increasing trade regulations in Canada, which were implemented the rst of the month.

“Canada is breaking longstanding trade agreements and Wisconsin farmers are paying the price.

Trade must be free, but fair, and Canada must play by the rules and end their protectionist policies. I’ve contacted the U.S. Trade Representative on this issue, and will continue to push hard for fairness in the days ahead,” said Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-Green Bay) in a statement made April 4.

At the time of print, it was unclear how many producers and pounds of milk will be affected by this decision.

Grassland was not available for a comment.

For Maurie Young and his family, who milk 1,000 cows near Plainview, Minn., it was an utter shock to receive the letter in the mail. Immediately after reading the notice, Young called his eld representative.

“I never imagined this could even happen here,” Young said. “I tend to think we have a pretty secure market in the Midwest with our processors and a fair amount of infrastructure.”

The Youngs began selling their milk to the processor last year, when they were in search of a better milk market and the business presented a pricing advantage for their products.

Since receiving the letter April 3, the Youngs have reached out to nearly a dozen other processors in the area in hopes that one may be able to take them on as a new customer.

“Right off the bat, and not surprisingly, we were told the processors were full or they’re not looking for milk,” Young said. “We’re waiting to hear back from some that are doing the best they can to come up with a plan to see if taking on more patrons is even a possibility.”

In the meantime, Young is condent a solution will be found.

“I’m hopeful [Grassland] will get something worked out; but on the ip side, we can’t wait to nd out and afford to dump milk for any period of time,” Young said.

Young encourages producers to contact their legislators to push for a resolution to the issue that has unfolded.

Comparing sudangrass, sorghum-sudangrass in the eld, dairy cow diets

One of the “big picture” goals at U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center (USDA Agricultural Research Service) is to increase the amount of forages in dairy cattle diets without affecting milk production or milk production efciency. Potentially, there are many ways this could be accomplished, so the “big picture” must be built from several smaller pictures, including a better understanding of alternative forages and how they can be combined in rations to bring about the desired result.

Sudangrass and sorghum-sudangrass are alternative forages that use less water, are high in digestibility, and are already being grown in drier regions of the U.S. or as emergency forages. The USDFRC chose to study these grasses from an agronomic perspective and a dairy cattle diet perspective. Preliminary studies show sorghum-sudangrass performs better with a single harvest, and sudangrass performs better with multiple harvests, including grazing; and up to 10% of corn silage and alfalfa haylage in dairy cattle diets can be replaced with sudangrass silage with no detrimental effect on milk production. The following are brief summaries of this ongoing research.

In the eld The objective of the agronomic study (Brink) was to compare yield and regrowth potential of brown midrib (BMR) sudangrass and BMR sorghum-sudangrass grown at two locations. At Prairie du Sac in south central Wisconsin, plots were seeded on June 6, 2016, and harvested on July 25 and September 19. At Marsheld in central Wisconsin, plots were seeded on June 8 and harvested on August 4 and October 6.

At the more southern location, forage production of sudangrass and sorghum-sudangrass was relatively equal for the rst and second harvest period because the climate is conducive to growth of both warm-season grasses.

At the more northern location, sorghum-sudangrass had higher yield potential than sudangrass for the rst harvest period, but lower yield potential for the second harvest period. At the more southern location, both sudangrass and sorghum-sudangrass had a higher regrowth potential compared to the more northern location; regrowth will be better the farther south the crop is planted.

The USDFRC will be conducting a similar study in 2017. But the takehome message from this rst year of data can be summarized as follows. If a farmer wants multiple harvests, as in a grazing system, sudangrass has higher yield potential because of its improved

Capturing the beauty of farm life Bauer shares her journey of Farmgirl Photography

MADISON, Wis. – Looking through a camera’s viewnder, a photographer captures more than an image. A photograph can capture a time, place and memory that will be cherished for days, years and generations to come.

Danae Bauer, a dairywoman on her family’s 400-cow farm in Scandinavia, Wis., has experienced the power of a photograph since starting her business, Farmgirl Photography, four years ago.

Bauer shared her story of success and tips for farm photography during a breakout session at the Wisconsin Ag Women’s Summit in Madison, Wis., March 11.

Bauer has since generated over 45,000 followers by sharing her photos through Facebook, Instagram and her website. What once began as a hobby has grown into a business she said she nds incredibly rewarding.

“When I started taking photos four years ago, it was a hobby and I was using a 110mm lm camera,” Bauer said. “My three younger brothers were my not-so-willing subjects, which is why I started photographing cows.”

Bauer began to capture the beauty of the lifestyle she had grown up with. From online videos to library books, Bauer began to dive deeper and deeper into her love of the camera.

When she realized she was se-

rious about broadening her skill set, Bauer enrolled in the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP) for a certicate in professional photography. During her time as a student, Bauer earned a NYIP merit award for photography excellence.

“I actually received the award for a photo essay I submitted about embryo transfer,” Bauer said.

After graduating in April 2012, Bauer knew she had found her niche. Farmgirl Photography was born and so was her photography style.

“I describe my style as creative, classic, clean and country; bright with vivid but true life color,” Bauer said. “I try to capture genuine emotion and interaction.”

Bauer said her favorite subjects to capture are young calves. Followers of her social media pages are often exposed to animals throughout her farm from birth and beyond. Her images are coupled with inspiring messages or quotations, as well as glimpses into farm life.

“My goal is to grab the viewer’s attention and pull them in. I love to capture scenes on the farm and make them think in a different way,” Bauer said.

As Bauer shared images of her own farm, fans began to reach out asking for her photographic services. Today, Bauer photographs senior, engagement and family sessions yearround, often featuring her favorite creatures.

“I set a low aperture for creamy, soft photos; I like to err on the side of having too much light in my photos as opposed to too little. I aim for clear, airy photographs that are better for the public,” Bauer said.

On her farm, Sandy Valley Farms, Bauer cares for the calves. With approximately 100 calves on milk at all times that are fed three times per day, she said she has had to learn to balance her time on the farm and behind the camera.

“I’ve learned to manage my time very efciently. I cannot believe how much this has blossomed,” Bauer said.

Whether it is calves on her farm or family photos from across Wisconsin, Bauer said she hopes her photos bring out emotions from those who view them.

“The greatest accomplishment for me is taking a photo that strikes a chord with the viewer,” Bauer said. “I hope my photos can spark fond memories of agriculture and farm life, as well as shed a positive light on our industry.”

Nachreiner Dairy is a partnership between my brother, Chris, my mom, Janet, and myself. We have 950 acres and it’s heavy black soil; it really holds moisture. This year we plan to plant 130 acres of alfalfa, 400 acres of soybeans, 350 acres of corn and then 70 acres of wheat. The field conditions are improving. We might try to plant wheat by the end of the week. We prefer to start planting corn the last week of April.

My wife, Marlene, and two sons, Richard and Robert, farm about 400 acres. We plant 370 acres of corn and 30 acres of wheat. We also have 140 acres of triticale that we planted in September and will harvest in May before we plant corn on it. We buy all of our hay. We have land that goes from 70 CSR to 5 CSR; that’s the northeast Iowa soil. We’ve worked a couple hundred acres. It’s been really good up to this week.

My wife, Debbie, and I own the farm and we have two sons, Tim and Justin, who work for us.

We have 1,280 tillable acres. We plant 600 acres of corn, 175 acres of soybeans, 85 acres of new seeding alfalfa and we have 400 acres of established alfalfa. We’ve had a lot of rain in the corner we’re at and are ahead in moisture. Some of the alfalfa is starting to green up. We usually get into the field around April 15 planting corn, and try to be done by May 4.

Then we go right into soybeans.

The fields are a little sticky yet.

We have silty loam soil with clay underneath. We try to start planting corn by the second or third week in April.

Lynn, my wife, and I have about 240 acres of land. We plan to double crop 48 acres of that. We’ll do triticale and peas, and then sorghum sedan grass after that. We’ll plant triticale and peas as soon as we can. We also plan to seed 75 acres of corn, 40 acres of new seeding alfalfa, and have 30 acres of established alfalfa. We have a sandy loam soil.

I was over toward Detroit Lakes, Minn., and there was one field that had been worked. We are satisfied if we plant corn in early May.

My wife, Judy, and I have 800 acres. We plant 500 acres of corn, 200 acres of soybeans and 100 acres of oats underseeded with alfalfa. We have pretty good soil in our area. I have been out hauling manure and came across just a few wet spots. I hope to plant oats and alfalfa next week. I have a week of manure to haul, as well. I try to be planting corn by the last week of April.

40 cows, 130 acres We are right out of Mellen, Wis. We milk about 40 Holsteins. We run 130 acres on our farm – corn for silage, grass, hay and alfalfa. This year, we are planting alfalfa, 96-day corn and some BMR corn. One thing about growing crops in our area is there is a point between the central part of the state, not quite, where we actually have a frost benefit because the lake keeps us from freezing. There’s less severe frost. Sometimes we miss a frost, while a little south of us will get hit. The lake helps us in that respect.

The disadvantage is the length of the growing season. The lake keeps us warmer sometimes, but colder most of the times. We usually start planting before May 10, and usually by mid-May we have everything in. The first of June is when we figure we will be cutting first crop. Everything is pretty much corn silage, so early September to midOctober we are finished up, depending on the year.

Our favorite breed is Guernseys, but we have a little bit of everything on the farm, except an Ayrshire. We farm about 490 acres of corn silage and haylage. Last year, we also raised most of our own high moisture corn. This year, we will be planting 100 acres of BMR corn silage, 80 acres of small grains, 22 acres of new seed hay and an additional 180 acres of hay. We don’t have any irrigation, so that can be a disadvantage during dry summers. We have good soil and plenty of cow manure, so we don’t have to spend a lot on fertilizer. We anticipate we will be able to get in the fields at the beginning of May.

We milk 90 cows and own 440 acres, 330 of which are tillable, and rent another 30 acres.

We have 161 acres of alfalfa, 25 acres of wheat, 140 acres of corn, 34 acres of soybeans, and 60 acres of timber and some pastureland. My wife, Marlis, and I farm with our son, Andy, and his wife, Gennie. You have to be more careful with crop rotation, as far as soil erosion in our area. We have to use better practices to prevent erosion because of the hills that run through this area. Our land is good for growing hay because we have growing ground and we can rotate the crops easier because of the lay of the land. So far, we have started spreading fertilizer on the hay ground and nitrogen on the wheat.

250 cows, 775 acres We milk 250 cows with four robots. We raise all of our own youngstock.

The farm has a total of 570 head. We are doubling our amount of crop acres this year because the farm next door came up for rent. We are going from 425 acres to about 775 acres this year. We are planning to plant 100 acres of soybeans, 500 acres of corn and the remainder will be hay. Half of our corn goes to silage and half goes to grain. One of the advantages to growing crops in this area is that we have very heavy ground. In years with very little rain, we do very well. That is also our detriment, because if it is wet it takes us a very long time to dry out. Because of heavy rains we have received recently, and are anticipating in the coming week, we do not expect to be starting out in the field for a few more weeks.

We milk 220 cows three times per day, and farm 450 acres of rented and owned land. We plant corn and alfalfa. We run approximately 200 acres of corn and 250 acres of alfalfa. Last year, we were planting on April 17, which I don’t think will happen this year.

Being close to the Mississippi River is an advantage for us to market and transport grain. The hills in this area are a challenge for us. We contour strip our fields, so we have some fields that are an acre, and we have some that are maybe 10 acres at most. We do strictly no-till and sign up for as many programs as we can to get less run-off. We have a nutrient management plan with Ed Ruff of Southwest Technical College.

My wife, Pam, and I have about 370 acres of land. This year, we plan to have 100 acres of alfalfa, 175 acres of corn, 45 acres of barley underseeded with alfalfa, and the rest are meadows or pasture. We have mostly heavy soil with clay loam. We are going to start hauling manure tomorrow (April 5). Some of the higher ground in the area is being worked.

We’ll plant the barley as soon as we can, and try to start planting corn

by April 18 or 20.

We milk 70 Holstein cows and raise 60 youngstock. We farm 300 acres of open land. We raise soybeans, corn and oats. We are up on red clay, so if we get a lot of rain, our flat fields can get very wet and it takes a long time to dry out. On the other hand, if it gets too dry, red clay can really take a toll on the corn. The advantage of being on a ridgetop, however, is good drainage and a pretty decent growing season, as far as heat units are concerned.

Baking bread Before we start chatting about Easter bread, I need to make an apology. It was pointed out to me that I forgot to list an ingredient last time. Ev called and left a message on my phone asking, “where’s the soup?”

I didn’t have a clue what she was talking about. As Mark and I watched TV that night, it suddenly dawned on me. I forgot to list cream of mushroom soup as an ingredient, but mentioned soup in the directions. That’s what happens when you have to actually write down a recipe you throw together off the cuff. My hamburger wild rice casserole is the rice pilaf recipe in my Betty Crocker cookbook, along with my own tweaks. It has never been written down before, and I was trying to recall it off the top of my head for you. Oops. The great thing about casseroles is that they are pretty much foolproof.

One thing that is not fool proof is baking bread. When I was in high school, I killed more yeast when I was trying to make homemade pizza dough. I just chalked it up as something I wasn’t very good at. Fast forward a number of years later, more kitchen experience and a stronger I-can-do-this-attitude, and I have discovered I like making bread. That is not to say I haven’t killed any more yeast, but I don’t have as many ops.

Once I understood a few basics, the ops have been further apart.

Bread is a simple food. The basic components are yeast and our; yeast to make the dough rise and our to provide substance and structure. When yeast is placed in warm water and fed sugar, it grows and multiplies giving off carbon dioxide gas that makes dough rise. Yeast also give bread its airy texture and contributes to aroma and avor. The gas emitted by the growing yeast needs a framework to build upon. This is provided by the gluten, a sticky combination of proteins developed by stirring and kneading moistened our. The gluten traps the pockets of gas given off by the yeast, causing the bread to rise.

The other ingredients in bread – salt, sugar, butter and eggs – add avor and tenderness.

The key to remember is temperature.

too hot. Everything needs to be just right.

The liquids must be in a range of 105-120 degrees depending on which way you want to start the yeast. If you want to proof the yeast, to see if it is active, warm your water to 105-110 degrees. Higher temperatures will kill the yeast. (I discovered this was my problem in high school.) Use a thermometer to know exactly where your temperature is. With experience, you can drop some warmed water on your wrist. It should feel only slightly warm. Sprinkle the yeast over the warm water in a large bowl. Now add a teaspoon of sugar, stir well and set aside for 5 to 10 minutes to see if the yeast will bubble and grow. Now it is ready to mix with the our and other ingredients.

If you know your yeast if fresh, just mix it with 3 cups of our, salt and sugar in your mixing bowl. Warm the liquids and butter up to 120 degrees. This won’t kill the yeast, but will make the yeast work faster. Use a thermometer or the temperature probe of a microwave oven for accuracy. When we guess at the temperature, we often play it safe and use liquid that is too cool, slowing the rising action.

In the ingredients, our is always listed as a range. This is because ours vary greatly in their ability to absorb moisture depending upon the batch and your weather.

The secret of making bread is to use as little our as possible and still be able to handle the dough. Extra our will tend to make the bread heavy and tough. When mixing our into the wet ingredients, I start with 3 cups of our. I beat this mixture on medium high for about 3 minutes to stimulate the gluten. Then I work in the remaining our until a sticky dough starts to form. Turn the dough out on a oured surface and start kneading for 5-10 minutes, working in the remaining our until the dough is smooth and silky. When I don’t have time to knead the dough, I will make No-Knead Rolls. By letting this dough sit overnight in the refrigerator or a cold garage, it kneads itself and the rolls are tender and uffy.

Food columnist, Natalie Schmitt No-Knead Rolls 2 pkg. dry yeast 1/2 cup sugar 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 cup boiling water 3/4 cup warm water (105-110 degrees) 2 eggs 1 tsp. salt (rounded) 5 to 5 1/2 cups our 4 Tbsp. butter Mix the rst three ingredients and set aside. Mix the next four ingredients and cool to room temperature. Beat eggs with a fork and add to both of the mixtures. Gradually stir in our. Put in a tight container in refrigerator for a couple of hours or overnight.

Punch down and divide in half. Roll into a 12- to 16-inch circle. Using a pizza cutter, cut dough into slices. Roll up slices starting with the wide end and tuck the little end underneath. Place on greased cookie sheet. Let rise for 30-60 minutes. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on rolled out dough before cutting for quick cinnamon rolls.

Freeze and Bake Rolls 2 pkg. yeast 1 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 cup warm milk 1 1/2 cups warm water 4 tsp. salt 1/4 cup oil 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 cups our Dissolve yeast in warm water (105-110 degrees) with a tsp. sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes. Add warm milk, oil, salt and sugar.

Add 3 cups our and beat for 2 minutes. Add enough remaining our to form a stiff dough.

Knead till smooth. Place in greased bowl in a warm place for 1 ½ hours. Cover. Punch down. Divide into four pieces. Cover three with plastic wrap. Divide one piece into 12 balls. Roll each ball out into 10-inch ropes, tie knot and pinch ends together. Place on greased baking sheet, brush with melted butter, cover and let rise 20-30 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes.

To freeze: Partially bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. Rolls will look white. Cool.

Freeze. Reheat frozen rolls at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until browned. Store in freezer bags with baking instructions written on bag for a quick gift.

Now I have instant homemade gifts to share with friends who need a little sunshine in their day. My only problem is the kids will eat the rolls straight out of the freezer on their way to the barn. Or, they will throw a couple in the microwave to have fresh rolls. You can make these rolls before Easter, freeze and pop in the oven to warm up and give your home a fresh baked bread smell.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a large bowl, combine flours, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a glass, 2-cup measuring cup, stir lemon juice and lemon zest into milk. [Note: This will “sour” milk and some curdling may occur.] Stir soured milk, butter and egg into the dry mixture until combined. Spoon batter into a 1-quart zip-top storage bag. Cut an opening in one corner of the bag, just large enough to pipe the batter into each form of a small doughnut baking pan. Pipe batter into pan. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until doughnuts test clean with a toothpick and are browned on the bottom. For doughnuts, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spoon 1 tablespoon of batter into each tin of a minimuffin pan greased with non-stick cooking spray. Bake 15 to 17 minutes or until doughnut “holes” test clean with a toothpick. Cool in pans for 5 minutes.

Combine yogurt and honey for icing and serve with warm doughnuts.
