Barn rental, feed agreements give Yurzyck a chance By Maria Bichler & Mark Klaphake Staff Writers
HOLDINGFORD, Minn. – While many dairymen and women nd themselves exiting the industry due to a depressed milk market and not being able to make the numbers calculate in their favor, Aaron Yurzyck has managed to make dairying work for him. He is thriving on the farm he now rents west of Holdingford, Minn. “… All I owe is for the cows,” Yurzyck said. “Little bit on the straw and my truck, but that’s minor; not near the expenses what a lot of dairymen have.” Yurzyck, 24, began milking a herd of 36 cows less than one year ago on Oct. 15 in his current facility after renting his uncle’s dairy farm near Freeport, Minn., for the 11 months prior. In total, Yurzyck has been receiving a milk check of his own for 1.5 years and has grown his herd to include 53 cows and youngstock. He did not grow up on a dairy farm. “I worked with my uncle in the summertime; growing up I’d stay there for weeks at a time,” he said. “I really didn’t milk much.” After high school, Yurzyck worked

Aaron Yurzyck feeds high moisture corn to his milking herd April 20 at the dairy farm site he rents near Holdingford, Minn. at Polar Tank Trailer in Holdingford, Minn., but said he did not enjoy his duties. He then began working as a relief milker on a dairy farm, near Albany, Minn., while still working at Polar Tank Trailer. When Yurzyck decided to transition to dairying full time, he purchased cows from three herds; buying grade and registered Jerseys, and Holsteins from regional dairy farms. “It was hard to pick a bad cow,” Yurzyck said of the herds he purchased from. “I like picking cows. I prevent disease by going to herds that I know have a good vaccination program because I know the cows are healthy and haven’t had an issue.” The result is a uniform herd, which is now housed in a 63-stall tiestall barn. In order to ready the facility for his cows, Yurzyck changed out the lights, xed the bulk tank, cleaned and ensured the milking system was in proper order. “It was a turn-key barn,” he said. The mattress stalls are bedded with wheat straw, and Yurzyck has noticed increased cow comfort. “The cows are all laying down,” he said. “I haven’t had issues with the cows in the stalls at all.” He also noticed a decrease in the somatic cell count, which is now around 90,000. Yurzyck purchases his feed – high moisture corn, meadow hay, corn silage and alfalfa – from the owners of the farm. He sources the protein from elsewhere. When making the switch in facilities, he also switched from feeding a total mixed ration (TMR) to component feeding. He saw an improvement in milk production. “After the move, they weren’t stressed and started going up right away,” Yurzyck said of the cows’ production. “They were at a 62-pound average with a 3.7 butterfat and 3.0 protein. … They almost jumped to 70 (pounds) within a couple weeks, up to a 4.0 butterfat and a 3.2 protein. … The transition was good.” A typical day for Yurzyck begins just after 5 a.m., when he travels three miles from his home to the dairy to rst feed corn and protein, and push up hay. Then, he cleans the barn and starts milking at 6:15. After milking is complete, he feeds the calves as well as heifers. After continuing to complete various chores or rest, he returns to the farm by 3:30 p.m. to do it all over again.
“I really enjoy the cattle,” he said. “I’m gentle with them.” Yurzyck breeds for high components, good feet and legs, and udder quality. He has six Jerseys; the rest are Holsteins and one Brown Swiss cross. If a cow does not settle within the rst two attempts, she is crossbred to either Montbéliarde or Jersey. Being a beginning farmer during a time of low milk prices, Yurzyck has been able to continue dairying with the help of his current arrangement. “They are good people,” he said of the farm’s owners. “They give (me) a good price on everything.” Yurzyck has little to no overhead and minimal equipment costs. He took out two loans to purchase his cows, has costs tied up for his wheat straw bedding and his monthly feed bill. Otherwise, he only has to focus on his cows. “I don’t have outrageous feed costs and equipment repairs; I can make it work,” he said. He borrows the farm’s skidloader; putting fuel it in when necessary and paying for the oil changes. The farm’s owners use the herd’s manure as fertilizer. “I don’t have to worry about (manure),” Yurzyck said. “He puts it on his elds.” When Yurzyck received his rst milk check, he was being paid $19 per hundredweight of milk (cwt). Overtime, the check sunk to $14 cwt. Yurzyck said if he is responsible with his spending, he can continue to operate at $13-$14 cwt. “My parents taught me to save, save, save,” he said. “I buy what I need if I have the money for it.” Ideally, Yurzyck said he would ll the barn and feed a TMR; then he’d like to nd his own dairy and own a tractor and skidloader. But, with the current milk prices, he said the change is not worth it. “I plan to rent for awhile,” he said. “I’d like to get new mats in the barn … but I’m doing ne with component feeding; if milk prices don’t go up a lot, leaving won’t be worth it. I can’t get a farm for that (current milk price), not even close.” He advises other dairy producers who may want to rent a facility to trust and respect the people they are working with. “Talk around to their neighbors, see how they were … don’t do something that won’t make you money,” he said.

MADISON, Wis. – Daniel Basse, president of Ag Resource Company, shared his thoughts on the state of global agricultural markets and their impact on the dairy industry with those in attendance at the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) Business Conference March 15 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. “I don’t need to wallow in where we are today in markets,” Basse said. “But I do need to have you think ahead and think about where we may be going, so you can think about your businesses and what needs to be happening.” Basse referred to the relative state of economic order that has been present over the past 10 years. “What do I mean by economic order?” Basse said. “We have central banks that have the interest rates near zero. We came out of the 2008 recession and real estate dropped. We saw banks all working together, putting about $12 trillion of quantitative easing, something that has never happened before. That’s all coming apart today. Banks are no longer working together, interest rates are going to be going up, and we have other things happening around the world which I nd very disconcerting.” Besides increasing economic discord, Basse pointed to increasing political chaos, not only in this country, but throughout the world, affecting market stability. “As I go around the world, people ask what’s going on in America?” Basse said. “They look up to us; everyone wants to be an American, that’s why our immigration program is as it is. Today, there’s this chaos that seems to be festering and the rest of the world is concerned. With that I would add the uncertainty of trade, the proposed $60 billion of tariffs against China, steel and aluminum, Brexit, other leaders. There’s a Brazilian election in October in which the leading candidate, President Lula, is likely to go to jail. The Brazilian people are asking if he can lead the country from jail. When I talk about economic and political chaos, that’s where we are today. If you’re thinking about a world that’s going to be as stable as it’s been for the last 10 years, think again. These markets and the nancial markets will be much more volatile than what we’ve seen.” In addition to the economic and political factors that affect U.S. agricultural markets, Basse noted that commodity production in other areas of the globe is rapidly gaining on U.S. productivity. Meanwhile, input costs are eating away at U.S. prot margins. “The rest of the world is really catching up with us in terms of productivity,” Basse said. “Russian wheat yields are up about 80 percent in just the last ve years. The United States has become the world’s high-cost producer. When we think about producing crops or livestock, it’s not that the agriculture markets aren’t providing a lot of opportunity. They are and they will. ... The question is what can you do to get your costs down?” Basse said the key to sparking a lasting U.S. ag recovery would include a drop in the value of the U.S. dollar. “If you were to tell me that the value of the U.S. dollar was to drop 20 to 30 percent, I can get really bullish about U.S. agriculture,” Basse said. “The U.S. dollar is already down about 6 percent in the last nine months.” With that, Basse said he is no longer bearish about dairy. “I think with milk prices trading between $13 to $17, we’ve done everything we need to on the downside,” Basse said. “Butter demand is rising; January trend had a record amount of U.S. (milk) powder. Things are starting to look better for U.S. dairy. I don’t think there’s a lot of down-side risk.” Basse sees reasons to be optimistic of dairy into the

Preparing your pasture
Specialist/producer reveals measures for spring grazing By Maria Bichler Staff Writer
GILMAN, Wis. – With an extended winter across the Upper Midwest, an abnormal spring season and even the absence of spring for some, preparing pastureland for the upcoming grazing season has been delayed; however, ensuring pastures are ready for cattle to graze is a signicant task. Kevin Mahalko is a grazing education specialist with River County Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc. (River County RC&D) and Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship. “I’ve worked with [River County RC&D] for over 10 years now,” Mahalko said.
“We’ve gone from being a partnership with NRCS to ... now being more membership driven. We’ve had a lot of commitment from farmers to keep it going.” Mahalko also serves on the GrassWorks board of directors as the vice president. He operates a 40-cow organic dairy in Gilman, Wis., having been grazing his family’s Holstein herd since 1995. Mahalko houses most of the dairy’s Holsteins outdoors yearround with the milking herd having access to the barn. He uses windbreaks for shelter. Mahalko said his area was blanketed with 70 percent snow cover as of April 19; however, the sun was nally shining and exposed grass was beginning to
turn green. “It’s been a long winter for sure,” he said. The best thing to do now is to stay out of pastures, Mahalko said. “This sounds simplistic, but the best thing we can do right now is to not go out there,” he said. “It’s tempting. People are short on hay. That rst green up is going to be a huge motivation to do it. But, research shows time and time again if you can let (the stand) get to some height, it will pay itself back all throughout the grazing season.” Mahalko said many producers are eager to open the gate and let the cows on the pasture as soon as the snow melts and the pasture stands are green. This, however, can lead to compaction and over grazing. “The roots never get a chance to develop like they should,” he said.
Instead, by not allowing cattle to take the rst leaves off, the plant will have an opportunity to develop a root base and grow adequately allowing producers to use the paddock multiple times throughout the year. In order to hold cattle off the pasture until the proper time, Mahalko said a producer must have planned for forage supply the year prior. “It is something that is in the planning the previous year,” he said. “We try to make as much forage as we possibly can to have some kind of a surplus, a cushion. It all goes back to just doing the absolute best job with hay making, timing and the forage quality and everything.” The Mahalko family’s milk is supplied to Organic Valley and is marketed as milk from organic grass-fed cows. So, the Mahalkos follow a no-grain feeding program.
“It really does force us to get really tight about making baleage and dry hay in a shorter window,” Mahalko said. “We try to maximize the energy and not lose any protein as we are harvesting.” Now is also an appropriate time to conduct spring soil testing to realize soil nutrient needs. For conventional and organic producers, fertilizer can be applied. Also, once the pasture stand breaks dormancy, producers should dedicate time to analyze what vegetation survived the winter. “If your pasture has been short on legumes in the fall and spring, it is a good time to go out and no-till red and white clover, alfalfa and maybe annual grasses or establish longerterm pasture,” Mahalko said. “When it is short and the snow Turn to GRAZING | Page 7

When temperatures are no longer freezing at night, Mahalko will roll out clear maple sap line and have a continuous ďƒ&#x;ow of water going to a reserve tank near the water tank in the pasture. That way, if temperatures do dip below freezing, infrastructure is not harmed. If a producer does not have the facilities to continue housing cattle indoors, Mahalko said cattle can be placed on low quality areas of land.

Utilize (the cows) as a tool at that time.â€? Cows can also be put out on areas of pasture that were stockpiled and not grazed during the fall season.
“Those would be areas cows could start out on and would do less harm as long as they can be out there without too many hoof marks and compaction,â€? Mahalko said. For ďƒželds that were grazed in the fall, Mahalko said to give those areas supplemental time before being exposed to cattle. With snow beginning to melt and temperatures approaching their season average, Mahalko said spring grazing will come. “It’s been a very long winter,â€? he said. “If we get these stretches, it will thaw the ground out fairly quickly because of the angle of the sun and intensity of the sun versus a month ago. Things will get off to a pretty decent start.â€? An update from Mahalko on April 24 revealed most of the snow has melted and things are greening up. “I’m happy to see earthworms coming back and working the soil,â€? he said. “Everyone is happy this it is green, and the cows are happy.â€?

Daniel Basse, president of Ag Resource Company, shares his thoughts at the PDPW Business Conference last month on how global economic and poli�cal trends are affec�ng ag markets. fourth quarter of the year, with the largest concerns going forward being the need for new demand drivers, rising feed costs due to weather and a decreased amount of working capital available for operation. “We can just keep borrowing more and more money for agriculture, but sooner or later we all need to start making money,” Basse said. “Our banker likes us when we make money and we’re able to pay back that debt.” Basse said the United States Department of Agriculture said 67 percent of net farm revenue is due to marketing decisions. “That may not affect the dairy farmer as much as the grain farmer,” Basse said. “But feed costs on the other side are very important. I need you to think not only about being the best producers in the world, I need you to think about being better marketers, looking at costs when you decide what you are doing.” USDA is projecting that nominal net farm income and real net farm income will start stabilizing, following a drastic decrease since 2012, going from $120 billion of net farm revenue down to $60 billion. “They are agreeing with me that the worst is over,” Basse said. “The problem is, if we’re going to stay in the game, we need to gure out how to manage along that line of stability. There is not another
industry in the United States that has lost 50 percent of its net income since 2012 and is still here to talk about it. That’s what we’ve done with agriculture.” The bright light in the dairy tunnel is the overall increase in global dairy product consumption. Global cheese and butter consumption are making small gains from year to year. Basse said demand needs to increase for powdered milk products. Over the next several decades, Basse sees China and India as the two countries that will continue to drive global dairy demand. U.S. milk production in 2018 is on track to reach a record-high 218.7 billion pounds. Last year, the butterfat market added $2 per hundredweight to the Class III milk price. “Butterfat has become a really important ingredient in our lives,” Basse said. “… About 14 months ago, we found out butterfat is not all that bad for us. All of the sudden there were new diet crazes, with people putting butter in their coffee. The butter revolution is here, and we now know that butter and fat is an ingredient that is healthy in our diets. World dairy demand is relatively strong. We have big supplies and big demand. That’s a much easier equation to solve than big supplies and bad demand. I’m encouraged that there are opportunities in the dairy markets to do better.”

Successful calf management takes a village Three C’s foundation of program By Danielle Nauman danielle@dairystar.com
MADISON, Wis. – According to Dr. Theresa Ollivett, assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, the most vital part of calf care is the team that cares for the calves. Ollivett shared her thoughts with dairy producers in attendance at the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) Business Conference March 15 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. “If we can hire the right people and train them appropriately, and monitor what they are doing, the calves will take care of themselves,” Ollivett said. Identifying the members of your team and knowing who is caring for your calves is the foundation of calf care. Team members would include the people making the decisions in daily calf care, the person serving as the farm-level decision maker, as well as veterinarians, nutritionists and other calf consultants. “When we have a particular problem raising healthy calves, you have to know who the players are,” Ollivett said. “Knowing that person who is making that calf-side decision and having them be part of that team is really important.” Make sure roles are assigned and proper training is provided when hiring someone for your calf-care team. Discussions of expectations, training and re-training help ensure those team members are doing the job expected of them. “Understafng is a signicant problem, particularly as we are bringing more calves indoors, raising them in groups where it’s harder to nd them when they are sick,” Ollivett said. “When we have understaffed facilities, calves often go unnoticed for an unfortunate period of time, and we can’t do anything to help them.” Ollivett shared results from a survey looking at how many employees are needed to care for calves in different management situations. The survey looked at 30 different Wisconsin locations and found that the average number of calves one person could work with was about 60 calves per day, based on an eight-hour day for routine, day-to-day chores. In addition to that one person doing chores, it takes another half of a full-time equivalent person to do the healthcare. “If you don’t have that much help available, ask yourself why,” Ollivett said. “Do you think that could be contributing to any potential poor health or performance you are experiencing in your calves? That effort that goes forth to raising these calves needs a lot of attention to detail, and if someone is constantly running, trying to do everything that is expected of them, something has to suffer. Unfortunately, commonly it’s the calf health that suffers.” Ollivett refers to what she calls the three C’s of calf care: ensuring that the people caring for your calves are condent, compliant and consistent. “If the people taking care of the calves are condent, and they are compliant and they are consistent, the calves are going
to take care of themselves,” Ollivett said. “We need to do things in order to understand if our people are condent, compliant and consistent. That involves hiring the right people.” Hiring the right people is something that Ollivett stresses, along with providing appropriate training. “You can’t expect that they really understand what you want them to do,” Ollivett said. “Making sure your calf team is trained appropriately is the responsibility of the manager. You can’t assume the way they’ve done it in the past is the way we want it done now. You can’t assume that just because we have something written on the wall, it’s going to make sense to them. Making sure they understand what we want them to do is important.” Recording the health events that occur with the calves is the key to tying the calfcare system together. Recording allows the information to be monitored over time and decisions to be made. “We can use that information to gure out how well our employees are working,” Ollivett said. “We can use it to verify protocol adherence and re-train where we see those knowledge gaps.” She said looking at the records can allow for an opportunity for communication. Establishing a proactive plan of attack for locating sick calves should be looked at as a two-prong approach. Managers need to establish who will be looking for problems, what exactly those workers should be looking for, how often should they be looking, and how they are going to record and communicate that information. “They have to be able to nd calves that are acutely sick and have to be dealt with today,” Ollivett said. “The second prong is nding calves that are more subtly affected, where we can use a screening system a couple times a week to go nd those calves.” Daily observations of calves will allow members of the calf-care team to identify calves that may have profuse diarrhea, calves that are off feed, are lethargic or isolated, and calves that may be showing signs of labored breathing or excessive coughing. These ill calves need to be made a priority, receiving treatment and care immediately. Regular screening tests to observe calves will allow calf-care workers to assess calves looking at and rating calves to determine their overall health and condition. This allows workers to nd early or mild cases of illness and deal with them proactively. “This is intended to nd that calf sick well before she’s off feed, well before she’s head hanging, coughing and not eating or drinking,” Ollivett said. “Having our people trained to do that ensures that we’re going to nd these calves earlier and that they are treated in an appropriate fashion. It also means we’re recording this information and can follow it over time so we can understand what our actual level of disease is, and do we truly understand that future potential that we are losing based on how many calves are affected with respiratory disease.” Ollivett urges producers to work with their veterinarian to develop a protocol and establish a case denition for how to identify and treat various calf health problems. “Your veterinarian can help establish that protocol and make sure that everyone has the same denition of a problem,” Ollivett said. “This is important for a variety of reasons, but mainly to make interpreting records more accurate and efcient.”

Luke Heldberg 8 years old Second grade When do you do chores? I do chores after school and on the weekend. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is putting down sawdust in the parlor before the cows come in. I like doing it because it’s warm in the winter. I also like playing the game, “Don’t spill the sawdust” with Dad. Dad usually wins, but it’s fun to play. My least favorite chore is opening and closing the gates while Dad is scraping the barn. There is not much walking around. I have to stay in one spot, so it gets old after awhile.

DAIRY CALENDAR Experts from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will present a seminar focusing on effective ways to market livestock May 18-19 at the UWRF Mann Valley Farm in River Falls. With a focus on beef and pork, highlights of the seminar include: carcass evaluation, USDA quality and yield grades, beef quality assurance, labeling requirements, loan availability, effective marketing ideas to reach buyers. Attendees will also travel to Sailer’s Food Market and Meat Processing, Inc. in Elmwood on Friday to obtain an inside look at the operation of ve generations of successful meat processing. The seminar (Friday, May 18, from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, May 19, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) costs $75 per person and includes supper on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Registration is required before May 10 by going online to pay with a credit card at marketplace.uwrf.edu. DGA Spring Fling Pasture Walk, will be at 10:30 a.m., May 24, at Molitor Organic Farm, St. Cloud, Minn. The public is invited to a Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship Spring Fling pasture walk at Molitor Organic Farm. The main focus is on pasture production to improve farm economics. Before lunch, we will discuss current pressures of dairy farming. Also, we will hear Brad Heins, University of Minnesota Dairy Scientist, and Joe Molitor debate the future of dairy cow genetics. Will the super producing cow be the dairy farmers demise? After lunch, Brad will lead the discussion on grazing potentials, and how this management can improve net prots. Land value and forage costs are serious components of total feed costs. Joe Molitor will share what forages are working on his farm and how they inuence his feed costs. Assigning costs to pastured produced forage is not difcult and helps producer nancial success. Participants in this course must have had some prior tractor driving experience and be able to show some prociency in tractor driving or they will not be allowed to continue the course. Youth must be at least 12 years old to take the course; 12 year olds are eligible for a State of Wisconsin Certicate. Youth 13 and older are eligible for a Federal Certicate on their 14th birthday. The Federal certication allows youth to drive tractors for an employer and State Certication youth may drive tractors for their parents only. Youth involved in hazardous occupations, including farm machinery operations (tractor driving) other than on a farm operated by their parents, must have a Certicate of Exemption from these regulations in order to engage in such employment. National Mastitis Council (NMC) invites milk quality enthusiasts to its regional meeting in Guelph, Ont., Canada, June 20-22, on the beautiful University of Guelph campus. The NMC Regional Meeting, hosted jointly with the Ontario Association of Bovine Practitioners and Dairy Farmers of Ontario, features “Solutions to Emerging Milk Quality Issues.” Presenters will address implementation of selective dry cow therapy programs, bedding options and their impact on udder health, and maintaining the highest milk quality when transitioning to robotic milking systems. The NMC Regional Meeting kicks off with nine short courses on June 20. These short courses provide a small group setting, which allows participants to interact directly with instructors and other short course participants. Two short courses feature the “teaching parlor,” a one-of-a-kind portable training device designed to simulate a real milking parlor. The teaching parlor was among the most popular teaching tools used at NMC’s annual meeting held in Arizona this past winter. During the evening of June 20, enjoy some camaraderie with milk quality enthusiasts during the evening banquet, which features Andrew Samis who will address “Saturated Fat: A New Perspective.” Samis, a human physician afliated with Queens University, developed a research interest in diet and cardiovascular disease after completing his doctorate in gastrointestinal physiology. He has published in this area and has served on several national expert panels associated with the development of guidelines related to diet and cardiovascular disease. He will review the history of saturated fat dietary guidelines and debunk the myth that saturated fats, including butter, impair human health. On June 21, the general session addresses several topics related to emerging milk quality challenges. Key topics include animal welfare, automatic milking systems, bedding management, free fatty acids and product quality, antibiotic use and selective dry cow therapy. The NMC Regional Meeting concludes with dairy farm tours on June 22. Tour stops include Dual Lane, Kelderview and Larenwood dairies. Owners of these dairies will show visitors how they achieve outstanding quantity and quality milk production, along with sharing insights on providing cow comfort, building collaborative relationships and adhering to standard operating procedures. The early registration deadline is May 31. However, short courses have limited enrollment and are lled on a rst-come-rst-served basis. Goodhue County Dairy Princesses crowned On Saturday, April 7 the Goodhue County American Dairy Association crowned its new Dairy Princess royalty for the coming year at its annual princess and dairy awards banquet. The dairy princess program provides goodwill ambassadors to represent the dairy industry and the hard working dairy farmers of Goodhue County. The four dairy princesses will make public appearances throughout the coming year where they will educate the public about the care and dedication dairy farmers take in caring for their animals to produce wholesome and nutritious dairy foods. These young women will also participate in trainings put on by Midwest Dairy Association, and have the opportunity to compete to be a ďƒžnalist for Minnesota’s Princess Kay of the Milky Way. This year’s dairy pricesses are: Kjersten Veiseth, Zumbrota; Kira Quam, Kenyon; Kate Rechzigal, Kenyon; Catherine Keller, Bellechester. Mullenbach crowned Mower County Dairy Princess Julia Mullenbach, Rose Creek, was crowned 2018 Mower County Dairy Princess at the 65th Annual Dairy Princess Banquet, Saturday, April 14, at Lansing Corners Supper Club, Austin, MN. Mullenbach is the daughter of Al and Lynette Mullenbach, and was sponsored by Read’s Brown Swiss where she is employed. About 70 guests braved the April snowstorm to attend the annual dairy celebration. Abby Rossow, daughter of Mike and Vicki Rossow, Dexter, was named Mower County Dairy Ambassador. She was sponsored by AMPI. Mullenbach and Rossow were presented with “Austin Chamber Bucksâ€? by Darrell Ingvaldson representing the Austin Chamber of Commerce. Two girls were named 2018 Mower County Milkmaids. Winneshiek County SWCD honors NICC and the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation with Roy Schultz Memorial Award The Winneshiek County Soil and Water Conservation District honored Northeast Iowa Community College and the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation with the Roy Schultz Memorial Award on April 5 for the organizations’ collaborative environmental sustainability efforts. In a proclamation announcing the award, Winneshiek County SWCD and its chairperson, John Lubke, stated in part: “Iowa’s Dairy Center believes in the need to conserve and protect our natural resources and promotes good stewardship practices throughout the county … the Winneshiek County Soil and Water Conservation District presents the Roy Schultz Memorial Award for Distinguished Service on April 5, 2018 to Iowa’s Dairy Center for outstanding contributions to the conservation of soil and water resources in Winneshiek County.” NICC and Iowa’s Dairy Center, with the support of the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation, began implementing sustainable practices on the campus and surrounding land in 2011. That year, a study of the impervious surfaces on the Calmar campus demonstrated a need to reduce water runoff. The study indicated that one inch of rain produced 423,000 gallons of water; in turn the runoff from the parking lots, roofs and sidewalks contributed to soil erosion and gullies. This study prompted the rst collaborative initiatives in water control. Working in partnership with the Winneshiek County Soil and Water Conservation District, the College planted native forbs and grasses that assist in conservation efforts and soil retention. Subsequent projects enabled the campus and Iowa’s Dairy Center to implement new initiatives to address water management, soil health and a reduction of the campus’s and the Dairy Center’s environmental impact. The contributions of NICC, Iowa’s Dairy Center, and local, state and federal resources have provided the foundation for continued land stewardship. The College has also developed a sustainable conservation plan that includes a native wildower garden, buttery garden, shelterbelt, rain garden, oak savannah and a short grass native prairie. The construction of retention ponds, waterway improvements and a native planting bioswale are recent improvements. National Dairy FARM Program, Beef Quality Assurance Program seek nominations for joint dairy award The National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program is partnering with the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program to collect nominations for the rstever joint FARM/BQA Dairy Award for 2019. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2018. The awards honor outstanding beef and dairy producers and marketers that demonstrate the best animal care and handling principles as part of their day-to-day operations. This is an opportunity for NMPF member cooperatives and FARM participants to recognize dairy farmers that they believe demonstrate a strong commitment to quality animal care. In 2017, NMPF member Chris Kraft and his family were recognized for the care provided on their two operations in northern Colorado, Badger Creek Farm and Quail Ridge Dairy. “The FARM Program is excited to continue working with BQA by jointly presenting this award,” said Emily Yeiser Stepp, director of the FARM Animal Care program. “By partnering with BQA, we can grow our pool of nominations and celebrate even more dairy farmers for

Any individual, group or organization can nominate a single dairy operation for the award. Individuals and families may not nominate themselves, though they can be involved when preparing the application. NMPF and its National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Animal Care Program partners with both NCBA and BQA, working closely to create valuable producer resources on stockmanship, dairy beef welfare and quality, and animal care.
