Tews balances work on, off farm

LITCHFIELD, Minn. – Dairy farmers are naturally busy people; but for one dairy farmer, staying busy is the only way he knows.

Jim Tews grew up milking cows, and has continued his family farm while also working a full-time job for the City of Litcheld.

“I’ve never really thought about only needing one job,” Tews said.

“Ever since I was in high school, I had a job off the farm and then would always come home and do chores.”

Tews milks 24 cows near Litcheld, Minn., and is employed as the building ofcial for the city. He also helps with projects in the Public Works Department.

Every day, Tews is up at 4:30 a.m., milking cows and completing morning chores before switching hats and working for the city.

“I usually work from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in town, and do morning chores before that and evening chores after that,” Tews said.

Throughout the work week, Tews is responsible for inspecting new construction buildings, from home window installations to large business developments.

One of his most recent tasks was

Group housing comes in all varieties Producers share barn designs in DCHA panel

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Just as no two dairy farms are alike, neither are any two housing facilities.

Dairy calf and heifer raisers had the opportunity to learn about three very different group housing designs in a producer panel, “Your guide to group housing,” during the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association annual conference April 11 in Milwaukee, Wis. “One part of the operation is not any more important than another. … There is no beginning or end on our dairy farm,” said Jim Leick about the importance of managing a strong calf program.

“I’ve always liked the challenge of calves and heif-

ers, and getting them off to a good start,” he said. “The calves are the future of the herd; you have to have healthy calves to have healthy cows.”

Each month, Leick raises about 30 calves in 11- by 80foot group pens.

Newborn calves receive two gallons of fresh colostrum within the rst eight hours of life. After a few days

of being fed with a bottle, the calves are moved to the group pens, which contain automatic feeders.

While managing the calf portion of the dairy has become less labor dependent, those at Night Hawk Dairy are just as busy with the youngstock as they were before the new system was implemented.

“Now, it’s all about cleaning,” Leick said.

The pens are bedded twice a week with straw and completely cleaned out and disinfected every two weeks.

Each stall and front area where the calves convene are scrubbed twice daily, morning and night.

The automatic feeders also receive extensive, routine cleaning.

On the machines, the nipples are changed out three times a day, and every two weeks hoses are replaced.

The feeders receive two circuit cleanings in the morning and one at night. In the afternoon, Leick conducts a heat exchanger cleaning and then four automatic bowl cleanings. Every month, the automatic feeders are completely disassembled and rebuilt for inspection and sterilization.

“We also walk through our pens eight times a day to monitor the calves,” Leick said.

Following these strict protocols, Leick and his partners are able to raise healthy, productive calves as future replacements for the milking herd.

conƟnued from PANEL | Page 4 Lawnhurst Farm adapts housing facilities with growing dairy’s needs For 10 years, Lawnhurst Farm housed their calves in individual pens located in a greenhouse facility. However, by 2008, the number of youngstock began outgrowing the facility’s capacity and the dairy was in need of another housing option.

“It was pretty rudimentary with the places we visited – looking at farm designs and what works best,” Jensen said. “We came up with a hybridization of a barn we thought would be good for the calves and have labor efciencies.”

Jensen manages a 1,700-cow dairy located in the Finger Lakes area of New York.

Lawnhurst Farm has two calf barns, each with eight 14- by 48-foot group pens. The rst barn, which was built in 2009, is equipped with a warm room where the bulk tank is located and automatic calf feeders.

Two years later, Jensen built a second calf barn, which closely mirrored the rst.

“Our neighbor wanted to bring their calves home, which allowed us to ll the barn with our replacements and our neighbor’s,” Jensen said.

house facility until day 5 when they are moved to the group pens and fed whole milk until day 56.

Whole milk is collected from the milking herd and then placed in the bulk tank for feeding. The second barn receives the same milk as it is transferred through a pipeline that connects the two barns.

In an effort to accommodate the growing herd, Jensen also wanted to focus on labor savings when incorporating group housing into the calf portion of the dairy enterprise.

“You look at the investment in buildings and automatic feeders, but for us, one of the most costly things about raising calves was labor,” Jensen said. “For us, this setup was all about labor efciency. With the customraising aspect and economy of scale,

it’s basically the same labor with more calves to dilute our cost.”

Group housing improves death loss at North Florida Holsteins Prior to raising calves in group pens, Hammond was overseeing a calf program that saw 10 percent death loss.

“In the early 2000s, we were housing calves in elevated crates,” Hammond said. “This caused our people to be bucket washers and milk haulers, and our death loss was entirely too much.”

Hammond manages a 4,300-cow dairy farm located near the University of Florida.

Four years ago, North Florida Holsteins converted their housing facility to group pens and allowed the

calves to feed on an ad-lib system until 30 days of age. Then, the calves are transitioned to milk replacer and further weaned with automatic feeders.

Calves begin on one side of the barn with the ad-lib system. They are housed in groups of 15, but move in two groups onto the automatic feeding system, located across the alleyway.

“We made major changes,” Hammond said. “We designed a barn that reduces the stresses and the labor, and we’ve improved calf health.”

In addition to providing the calves with more space, Hammond has also re-evaluated the cleaning protocols for feeding equipment.

“Because the system is all automated, it’s helped a lot with cleanliness,” Hammond said. “It’s been a real game changer for us.”

By transitioning to group housing and re-evaluating calf-care protocols, Hammond and his team have maintained 1.6 percent death loss over the last six months.

“Our goal is to take the calf from birth to cow in the most efcient and humane way possible …,” Hammond said.

Jim Tews and his son, Jake, both hold full-Ɵme jobs in town, while also dairy farming near Litcheld, Minn. reviewing the expansion at the First District Association plant.

By late afternoon, Tews is on his way to the farm to complete evening chores and other farm work.

As Tews feeds and milks the cows, his son, Jake – who also holds down a full-time job off the farm – feeds the remaining livestock in the herd.

Together, they bed pens and complete various tasks around the farm.

“If everything goes well, I get home about 7:30 at night,” Tews said.

Tews has followed this routine since he graduated high school in 1981, when he was still farming with his parents.

“My folks were the boss and I was the boy,” Tews said. “As time went on, I got a better job and then an even better job, and continued farming.”

Tews and his wife, Sheila, purchased the dairy 15 years ago, when Tews’ parents aged and could no longer farm full time. However, as Tews retained his job in town, his parents helped feed the calves and do eldwork.

“My dad was able-bodied and ambitious well into his 80s. It was nothing for him to jump on the John Deere and bale ve loads of hay while I did chores,” Tews said. “That was his pride and joy.”

Since 1995, when Tews began working with the city, he has continually developed his routine to be as efcient as possible, both on the farm and in the ofce.

“The barn holds 24 cows and I like to keep it full,” Tews said. “I used to dream about milking more cows and now I dream about milking better cows.”

Tews focuses on sustaining a herd that not only milks well, but also is suited for his tiestall facility. He works with his nutritionists and reproductive specialist to rene a breeding program that reects that.

Additionally, Tews has put more effort in to raising strong, healthy replacements.

“The biggest issue I had was that my mom used to care for the calves, and I never realized how great of job she did until she was gone,” Tews said.

With labor, Tews and his son have a knack for accomplishing large jobs in a limited amount of time.

“It’s amazing when the weather cooperates how much you can get done in the evenings and weekends,” Tews said. “I was blessed to work with my dad almost every day for 40 years. I always think about that with Jacob, and I think our secret to working together is that we have the same ideas.”

Most recently, Tews has hired out his eldwork – planting and harvesting crops, and baling hay.

“I’ve started picking my battles,” Tews said. “We have great neighbors that will do anything for us – combine in the fall, help us chop silage.”

Tews’ coworkers understand his second job, being proactive when scheduling early morning and late night tasks so as not to disrupt the routine on the farm.

“When they want me to come to town and plow snow at 5 a.m., I’ll milk an hour earlier in the evening so I can milk two hours earlier in the morning.

Then, I’ll work my way back to a normal schedule,” Tews said.

However, some things are out of his control – whether that is the drinking cups overowing or cows getting out of their pens. “[My coworkers] are pretty generous if I need to take a long lunch break to do something or check on something.

Or, I can always call up one of the guys and let them know what is going on,” Tews said.

During such a time of nancial strain on the industry, Tews feels fortunate to have a job off the farm. Through the City of Litcheld, Tews is offered health insurance and a retirement package.

Although, the work environment more than anything is what keeps Tews engaged, he said.

“I love to work with people that love to work, whether that’s a carpenter out on a job or a construction worker who is working,” Tews said. “I can’t say enough good about the people in the city. It’s fun to go to work.”

For the past several decades, Tews has balanced a busy workload as a dairyman and city worker, and there is little indication of anything changing.

“As long as my health holds up, I don’t see any signs of stopping,” Tews said. “I gure if I can tough it out for another 10 years, I’ll probably retire one [job], and it won’t be milking cows.”

A different approach to land management

Archuleta presents workshop on soil health

KASSON, Minn. – Ray Archuleta knows his way of thinking about how to take care of soils and farmland might be different than a lot of farmers, but he feels its important for others to hear an alternative way to tend the ground.

Archuleta, a farmer from southwest Missouri and a retired soil quality specialist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, presented, “Maximizing Soil Health,” a workshop held by the Dodge County NRCS and the Land Stewardship Project on March 29 in Kasson, Minn.

Archuleta rst questioned conventional farming practices during his time as an engineer with a livestock pipeline for the NRCS in Idaho.

“My county had 6 million acres, with 300,000 irrigated acres,” he said. “It was there I questioned if something’s wrong with agriculture.

Every time irrigation season came on, the beautiful river at the border of the county turned to chocolate. I took that personally.”

Plus, he was noticing farmers were not making money and could not make their farms successful enough to bring in the next generation.

“Why can’t a farmer make a living on 500 acres with all the amazing water and soil?” Archuleta said. “It bothered me.”

In 2006, Archuleta had a change in the way he thought farms should manage land. He turned to biomimicry, which means to make the land mimic nature. He also likes to describe it as regenerative agriculture or freedom farming.

suffering economically,” Archuleta said. “The more we emulate nature, the more we are protable.”

Archuleta used the example that if burned or damaged land was left to heal on its own, the land, after many years, would regenerate with several varieties of plants, trees, microorganisms, bugs, bacteria and animals.

Earlier in the workshop, Archuleta did a few demonstrations – an aggregate stability and slate tests – to show how this idea works. Using soil samples from across the country

of both no tilled and conventionally tilled land, he showed the crowd how the no tilled soils stayed intact and absorbed water. The tilled soils fell apart and did not absorb much water, turning the water brown under simulated rainfall.

Farms should try to work with the ecosystem already in place, Archuleta said. In order to do this, land on a farm needs four things: to capture sun, be able to go through the water cycle, be able to have nutrient cycling and capture diversity.

Having a crop growing on the ground at all times is the only way to capture the sun’s full potential, Archuleta said. To him, bare ground with no growth shows damaged soil and land. Having a cover on the land promotes growth and feeds microbes, which improves and increases organic matter.

isms, fungi, bacteria and all the living orthopods,” he said. “Life fused it together. It’s the secretions, excretions, blood, saliva, biological function that fuses them together to what is called organic matter.”

He also has a theory about why the western states in the country have a limited water supply.

“The heat coming from the bare soil is pushing rain clouds away,” Archuleta said. “When the rain hits the bare soil, it evaporates.”

This is stopping the water cycle, Archuleta said.

An important part of nutrient cycling is the surface residue left on elds, Archuleta said. Cover crops and no-till management help this by increasing fungi, bacteria, orthopods, worms and other organic matter needed to make the system work.

“When you plow or disc a eld, what happens to the system?” he said. “You stop nutrient cycling.

You destroy the system. These critters are also part of that system. When you bury them and disc them, you mess up the nutrient cycling system.”

Archuleta said tillage reduces the amounts of earthworms, which are important to the soil.

“They help with water inltration,” Archuleta said, mentioning the worms also assist with adding needed phosphorus and bacteria to the soil.

Having a diverse crop species is also important to soil health, Archuleta said.

“A corn-soybean rotation will never be able to regenerate,” he said. “That’s why when we use a multispecies mix you start the healing process again. That’s why it’s critical.”

Archuleta said diversity within corn, alfalfa or cover crop elds also helps this aspect.

“I was taught that nature was competitive,” Archuleta said. “Biomass increases with a variety of

species rather than one. How can our plants compete and still get nutrients for themselves? They are sharing resources. They are collaborating. Nature ecosystems under competition, under stress do not compete. They help each other.”

When it comes to manure application, Archuleta cautioned to not use excessive amounts.

He mentioned a study in Pennsylvania where one dairy applied manure twice a year at 20,000 to 60,000 gallons per acre compared to another dairy that applied manure three times a year at 6,000 gallons per acre.

“The soil on the second dairy did much better and that dairy won environmental dairy of the year,” Archuleta said.

The study showed that microbe activity was much higher at 108 parts per million (ppm) on the second farm compared to the rst farm at 43 ppm.

“On the rst dairy, the microbes were choked,” Archuleta said. “They could not handle the amount of manure out there. They could not process it. We are applying way too much nitrogen in this country, setting ourselves up for disease and pathogens, and destroying the aggregate.”

One person asked what they should do with their extra manure.

“Sell it to your neighbor,” he said. “Make pots out of it. Make money out of it by making it into compost. The reality is, do not treat your soil like a dumping site.”

Overall, Archuleta wants farmers to take a chance on using a different way of thinking when it comes to soil management.

“Just try it,” he said. “It’s OK to fail. Through failure we learn.”

Slows spring in Europe rms global dairy market

Global dairy trade spirits got a lift and so did prices in Tuesday’s Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction.

The weighted average of products offered shot up 2.7 percent, following a 0.6 percent dip on April 2 and a 1.2 percent drop March 20. The quantity sold climbed to 42.5 million pounds, up from just under 38 million pounds in the last event.

Leading the gains was lactose, up 14.8 percent. Anhydrous milkfat was up 5.3 percent, after dropping 7 percent in the last event. GDT Cheddar was up 4.6 percent, following a 2.2 percent gain, skim milk powder was up 3.6 percent, after slipping 1.8 percent, and rennet casein was up 3.1 percent after pole vaulting 12.1 percent last time. Butter was up 2.9 percent, following a 4.1 percent surge, and whole milk powder inched 0.9 percent higher, after gaining 1.6 percent.

FC Stone equates the GDT 80 percent butterfat butter price to $2.5019 per pound U.S. CME butter closed Friday at $2.3150. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.7485 per pound U.S. and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.6025. GDT skim milk powder averaged 86.76 cents per pound and whole milk powder averaged $1.5020. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk price closed Friday at 80 1/2-cents per pound.

The April 13 Dairy and Food Market Analyst (DFMA) reported that “a delayed spring in Europe has held back milk production growth and has contributed to a rming of the global dairy market.” It added that the European Commission’s updated market outlook looks for European milk production to rise by 1.4 percent in 2018 and expects cow numbers to decline 0.4 percent. European cheese production was forecast to grow 2.1 percent this year, down from last year’s 2.4 percent increase. Butter production is expected to increase 3.1 percent and output of skim milk powder, plus 2.6 percent, according to the DFMA. A lot more dairy cows ended up at McDonalds in March as low milk prices and higher feed costs drove culling decisions down on the farm. The Agriculture Department’s latest Livestock Slaughter report shows an estimated 286,900 head were slaughtered under federal inspection, up 26,300 head from February and 15,800 head or 5.8 percent above a year ago. A total 837,300 head were culled in First Quarter 2018, up 43,900 or 5.5 percent from First Quarter 2017.

Meanwhile; the 2017 Livestock Slaughter Summary shows that 2.988 million head of dairy cows were slaughtered, up 1.03 million head or 3.6 percent from 2016.

Dairy prices were mostly higher the third week of April as the Midwest dug out from an unusual Mid-April blizzard and the annual Wisconsin Cheesemakers Conference took place in Milwaukee.

Cheddar block cheese climbed to $1.6350 per pound

Thursday but closed Friday at $1.6025, down a quartercent on the week and 5 3/4-cents above a year ago, as traders awaited the afternoon’s March Milk Production report. The barrels closed at $1.50, up 4 cents on the week and 7 1/4-cents above a year ago, despite 55 cars being sold on the week and just 5 of block, but are still an unsustainable 10 1/4-cents below the blocks.

Midwest cheese contacts tell Dairy Market News that demand has been solid. “Food service and retail buyers are making consistent purchases and that is helping to keep cheese moving,” says DMN, “However, with increasing milk production into the spring ush, and spot milk loads regularly available at $2 to $3 under Class, manufacturers report active production. In some cases, cheese makers are using inexpensive nonfat dry milk, when they can make the economics work, for fortication.”

DMN warned that “The end result is inventories that are growing,” and “The market seems to exude vulnerability.” “Manufacturers express varying levels of angst about the size of the spring ush, the gap between block and barrel prices, whether cheese demand will hold or whether trade will continue to ow smoothly. In addition, current spring weather has not only failed to prompt the grilling season, but has further added costs to transportation and shipping. There is an unsettled market tone for cheese and the larger dairy market,” says DMN. Western cheese output is active and following normal seasonal trends. Most plants are running at full capacity due to the spring ush. Cheese supplies are heavy, but manageable, says DMN. “U.S cheese prices are competitive with international prices and export interest remains active.”

Cash butter closed Friday at $2.3150 per pound, up 2 3/4-cents on the week and 22 1/2-cents above a year ago, with 39 cars exchanging hands on the week.

FC Stone reports that European butter averages last week were just over $3 per pound. Meanwhile, back home, DMN says Central region butter churning is currently ‘variable.’ “Class II processors are pulling more milk fat volumes, but cream is readily available for most butter manufacturing and most regional balancing plant operators are actively producing butter.” U.S. butter prices are still below international values, says DMN, and “could represent a possible export opportunity for some domestic processors/traders.”

Western butter production continues at a steady clip with ample supplies of cream, though volumes have eased slightly in the southern parts of the region, but are still trending higher in northern areas. Some international buyers are looking at the favorable U.S. butter price points compared to European and Oceania butter prices but inventories are building, according to DMN. Spot Grade A nonfat dry milk shot up to and closed

Friday at 80 1/2-cents per pound, up 7 1/4-cents on the week, a nickel below a year ago, but the highest CME price since October 9, 2017, with 57 cars nding new homes on the week.

The six-week old cash dry whey market closed at 31 1/2-cents per pound, up a penny on the week, with 2 sales reported for the week.

USDA’s Crop Progress report shows that 3 percent of the corn crop is in the ground in the top 18 producing states, as of the week of April 15. That compares to 6 percent a year ago and 5 percent in the ve year average. The report also shows 8 percent of the cotton is planted in the top 15 producing states, dead even with a year ago and 1 percent ahead of the ve year average.

The May Federal order Class I base milk price was announced by the USDA at $14.44 per hundredweight, up 34 cents from April, 76 cents below May 2017, but the highest Class I since January 2018. It equates to $1.24 per gallon, up from $1.21 in April and compares to $1.31 a year ago.

The ve month Class I average stands at $14.32, down from $16.47 a year ago and compares to $14.18 in 2016.

Speaking of uid milk; Dairy Market News reported February packaged uid milk sales totaled 3.7 billion pounds, down 1.6 percent from February 2017.

Conventional product sales totaled 3.5 billion pounds, down 1.7 percent from a year ago; organic products, at 205 million pounds, were up 1.0 percent and represented about 5.5 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.1 billion pounds, up 2.2 percent from a year ago, up 3.3 percent year to date, and made up 30.7 percent of total uid sales in the month and 30.9 percent for the year so far. Skim milk sales fell to 304 million pounds, down 10 percent from February 2017 and down 9.9 percent year to date Total packaged uid milk sales so far in 2018 hit 7.97 million pounds, down 1.1 percent from the same period a year ago.

Conventional products year to date totaled 7.5 million pounds, down 1.2 percent; organic products, at 438 million pounds, were up 1.7 percent. Organic represented about 5.5 percent of total uid milk sales so far in 2018.

The MW stated that “Milk prices are drawing support from strong exports and indications that milk production may be slowing in the months ahead. U.S. dairy exports reached an all-time high for the month of February on a daily average basis, with 181,797 tons of combined dairy products shipped worth $454 million in value. Export tonnage was up 19 percent from last year and the total value represented an increase of 4 percent from 2017.”

“Non-fat dry milk (NDM) and skim milk powder (SMP) exports showed particular strength relative to last year, with whey exports also quite impressive. While depressed milk prices have clearly stimulated export demand, they are negatively impacting U.S. production prospects.”

“Since the middle of February, dairy cow slaughter is running 7.5 percent above the same six-week period in 2017, while USDA’s Dairy Market News reports that “there were more reports of dairy farmers opting to auction their herds and exit the business.” The report noted that a number of farms were closing this month in the north central region that were more sizable than the average Midwestern farm. The report also mentioned that lenders are taking a cautious approach to credit ahead of the planting season, “which some contacts suggest could lead to more closures and potentially less milk production,” according to the MW. The March Consumer Price Index for all food was 252.4, up 1.3 percent from 2017. The dairy products index, at 216.5, was down 0.9 percent. Fresh whole milk was down 5.1 percent, cheese was up 0.8 percent, and butter inched 0.6 percent higher.

Most consumers take it for granted that there will be plenty of dairy products at the grocery store. America’s dairy farmers feed the U.S. and the world with wholesome nutritious food but they also help the U.S. Treasury.

That according to former Ag Secretary and now President and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) Tom Vilsack. Vilsack writes that “As Americans meet their April 17 deadline for ling taxes this year they can thank the U.S. dairy industry for creating $64 billion in tax revenues, according to Dairy Delivers, a publication of the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA).

“Dairy Delivers examined dairy’s economic ripple effect on other sectors of the national economy and concludes dairy is responsible for $24.9 billion in state and local business tax revenues and $39.5 billion in federal business tax revenues.”

“IDFA engaged John Dunham and Associates, an economic research rm, to quantify and break down the economic impact of dairy on the 48 mainland states and all 435 congressional districts,” USDEC stated. “This is a tool that provides a wealth of information to everyone in the U.S. dairy industry and anyone who cares about jobs, taxes and our state and national economies.” California dairy alone generating nearly $12 billion in tax revenues, according to the report.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted 13 requests for export assistance this week from cooperative members to sell 1.435 million pounds of Cheddar cheese and 639,341 pounds of butter to customers in Asia, Central America, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Oceania. The product has been contracted for delivery through July and puts CWT’s 2018 exports at 31.848 million pounds of American-type cheeses, and 7.011 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) to 25 countries on ve continents.

reported the bill to the full House. The bill drew praise from the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) which it says “contains key dairy policy improvements, a signicant rst step toward enacting a new Farm Bill before the current one expires this fall.”

Among the provisions NMPF listed are additional improvements to the dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP). “The measure raises the maximum covered margin to $9 per hundredweight and adjusts the minimum percentage of milk that can be insured; both measures will offer greater exibility for dairy producers. It also includes provisions of an important agreement reached between NMPF and the International Dairy Foods Association on price risk management.”

“It’s important that the Farm Bill process continue moving forward,” said NMPF President and CEO Jim Mulhern. “As U.S. dairy farmers weather a fourthstraight year of depressed milk prices, making additional improvements to the dairy safety net through this farm bill becomes more critical with each passing day.”

to carry out multiple conservation practices on their land and water. Under the trade title, the Farm Bill authorizes the trade promotion programs that are critical to dairy farmers and their cooperatives. The bill also includes helpful provisions intended to increase uid milk consumption.”

The IDFA also praised lawmakers for “approving a farm bill that includes key provisions for dairy.” IDFA cited the collaborative effort with NMPF to “help to smooth the ultimate enactment of a farm bill that offers enhanced risk management options for dairy processors and producers and establishes a retailer incentive program in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, that includes uid milk.”

NMPF’s Chris Galen says it’s unknown what amendments might be offered on the Floor. “The next step is for Republican leaders to build a majority in support of the measure to ensure it can be passed by the full House of Representatives, as Democrats will likely all be opposed, while even some GOP members may not be fully supportive. The earliest it could be considered on the House oor is next month,” according to Galen.

In its monthly forecast update for April, USDA did not change its forecast for total milk production during 2018 from its March report. It also left unchanged the midpoint of its forecast for 2018 average cheese prices and dropped its midpoint 2018 price forecasts for butter, nonfat dry milk and dry whey. Accordingly, the department lowered its midpoint forecast for the 2018 average all-milk price by $0.20/cwt. to $15.85/cwt. Over the same month, however, the CME dairy futures for butter and cheese improved, increasing the futures-based forecast for the 2018 allmilk prices by about $0.50/cwt. to $16.55/ cwt. USDA’s online MPP Decision Tool has been converted to project monthly margins, reflecting the improvements made by Congress to the MPP earlier this year. At the time the department’s April dairy forecast was released, the tool was projecting that the MPP margins would be below $8.00/cwt. from February through August this year, and would average $7.63/cwt. for all of 2018. Producers have until June 1 to sign up for coverage under the MPP for calendar year 2018.

Latvian farmer immersed in dairy industry Young dairyman joins family farm, manages another

NAUKšēNI MUNICIPALITY, Vidzeme, Latvia – Living and working on one’s own farm is a fulltime job.

Add ano t h e r farm to the equation, and days can be hectic.

This Jēkabs Vikmanis is what it

is like for 27-year-old Jēkabs Vikmanis. Devoting his time and knowledge to the dairy industry is of paramount importance to his life.

“I enjoy mastering the challenges on the farm because I have grown here together with (the) farm,” Vikmanis said.

Vikmanis and his family – father and farm owner, Agris Vikmanis; mother and farm manager, Daiva Vikmanis; sisters, Rūta, 26, and Laura, 24; and brother, Valdis, 17 – live in northern Latvia, just one mile from the Estonian border, in the Naukšēni Municipality of Vidzeme.

The farm, Sporas, is comprised of 210 milking cows which are milked twice per day in a double-4 tandem parlor. The herd is a cross between Latvian Brown and

“In 1992, we started working in the dairy industry,” said Vikmanis, although he is the fourth generation to be living and farming on his family’s land. “We started with four Latvian Brown cows.”

In addition to working at Sporas, where Vikmanis serves as the farm technician, A.I. specialist and veterinary assistant helping with pregnancy checks and calving, Vikmanis is the farm manager at LTD Naukšēni, a 330-cow dairy that includes various crop and edible oil production and malt and non-alcoholic drink production.

Vikmanis spends the majority of his time at LTD Naukšēni and manages all aspects of nutrition, calf care and completes A.I. The dairy

corn and 40 percent of the grain on its land. The rest is purchased. Vikmanis said in Latvia it is less expensive to grow feed, even for a larger farm such as Sporas, than purchase elements of the TMR. “We buy only additional things we can’t grow by ourselves,” he said.

With a climate similar to that of Wisconsin, the growing season provides ample feed for Vikmanis’ herd.

“We can grow all kinds of crops: perennial grass, trifolium (clover), medicago (legume), corn, wheat, rye, oilseed rape and some others,” he said.

is building a 500-cow, 50-cow rotary parlor farm this fall, which will allow the farm to grow to 1,500 cows. “(Our farm) is enough to support our lifestyle,” Vikmanis said. “I work elsewhere only because I want to do it.”

In addition to Vikmanis’ parents and brother, seven employees aid the family on the farm.

Cows are housed in a three-row freestall barn equipped with a Lely Juno 100 automatic feed pusher, which pushes feed every hour.

The herd is fed a TMR comprised of grass and corn silage along with concentrates: wheat, barley, rye, soybean, rape, a mineral mix, sodium bicarbonate, salt, limestone, yeast and palm fat.

“Mainly thanks to well-prepared feed, a good management program and high-quality genetics we have reached this result,” Vikmanis said of the herd’s average.

To obtain its current milk production, the farm made changes to housing, feed and genetic protocols. They have also consulted with the farm veterinarian on many herd health issues.

Sporas switched from a tiestall barn to its current system in 2004.

Vikmanis said the decision to crossbreed their herd, due in part to their work with World-Wide Sires, resulted in their preferred milking cow.

“The unique thing is that we have the crossbreed of Latvian Brown cows and Holstein Friesian breeds, because after the rst insemination the rst generation tripled the average milking yield,” he said.

Vikmanis uses the A.I. company’s genetic blueprints to achieve his mating goals.

“What I try to achieve with breeding is good shape of legs and nails, well-built body and udder so I have to pay less for veterinary services and get better milk production as well as healthy next generation calves,” he said.

Vikmanis uses A.I. to continually better his herd’s genetics.

“I like to inseminate my girls because I feel that the cows are my friends,” he said. “I would like to give them the best American bulls … . I like to be in the process of the birth of my children, as I call them. And I like to see them grow.”

Vikmanis said they purchased four bred heifers from Holland in 1998 to add to their growing milking herd as well.

The Vikmanis’ milk is sold to Milk Logistics, a farmer-owned cooperative. Vikmanis said the average dairy

herd in Latvia is 28 cows. In his area, however, there are six large farms with herds of 100-400 milking cows. Some farms are home to only one or two milking cows.

“What can differ is the milking systems,” he said. “There are some tiestall barns and freestall barns. Basically, feeding is close to one another.

The proportions of ingredients are individually calculated for each farm.”

In Latvia, the three equipment dealers – DeLaval, GEA and Lely – are present. The Vikmanis family works with DeLaval because of their availability and proximity to their farm.

In the future, Vikmanis does not plan to expand cow numbers; he may, however, add a third milking.

“I think the income would be acceptable, and it would not take too much effort (to add a milking),” he said. “It would make the average milking yield higher, up to 20 percent, but I still have to evaluate the expenses; would it be worth it.”

The Latvian dairy market was under pressure due to a Russian embargo, which had reduced Latvian dairy exports into the country. The Russian ban reduced the export demand, which caused a drop in farm-gate milk prices.

In 2015, a higher portion of milk production was processed into butter and non-fat dried milk. The products were stored within the European Union intervention programs or exported, according to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.

A return of the Russian embargo would impact Vikmanis’ farm; something Vikmanis is cognizant of.

“The biggest threat would be a Russian embargo that would not allow us to export the milk or milk products out to Russia,” he said. “It is important for us because we are next to Russia and a big part of our products are sold there. Another big thing would be the specics of our market. We have a lot of dairy product producers that are not even that big, there is no united opinion about anything, everything is a bit shuttered.”

But no matter the dairy climate in Europe and the world abroad, Vikmanis will continue devoting his time to the industry he has always known.

“I enjoy everyday challenges,” he said. “It tests my ability to grow, develop my personality, to make me stronger, and that is the reason I am never bored, because … there is always something to improve. It is a unique lifestyle, … but I (would) rather stay and work in the countryside, … spend my days in fresh air and enjoy surroundings. We love this job, we love this lifestyle and we will do this no matter what.”

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Individual calf hutches have been a traditional method of housing youngstock, but calf barns continue transforming the dairy industry by being both efcient and effective in raising healthy animals.

“Calves can do well in hutches as the environment for calves is managed properly,” Dr. Ken Nordlund said.

“But as the industry has come to recognize the importance of growth rate in the rst 60 days, it’s really difcult to achieve that in hutches. … I think quite a number of calf barns have been delivering performance equivalent to that of hutches with the advantage of labor.”

Nordlund, emeritus clinical professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, spoke of the important building features to consider when constructing a calf barn during his presentation, “Calf barns designed to enhance health,” April 12 at the Dairy Calf and Heifer Conference in Milwaukee, Wis. There are three periods in the life of a nursing calf where they are at great risk for enteric and respiratory diseases.

“How can we address housing to reduce the risk of these diseases in different stages?” Nordlund said.

Regardless of the barn design, properly built structures should provide clean, dry and cold air in the microenvironment surrounding the calf with a secondary way to support core body temperature; ample dry bedding and an adequate drainage system; minimal exposure of young calves to older ones; and a method to reduce social stress at weaning.

Supplemental positive pressure tubes improve air quality In a eld study Nordlund conducted in 2004, he found calf pens in naturally ventilated barns had anywhere from 75,000 to millions of organisms per cubic meter, indicating extremely polluted air.

As a reference, Nordlund noted a freestall barn for lactating cows usually contains less than 15,000 organisms per cubic meter.

“This study transformed the way I look at calf barn ventilation,” he said. “Our industry has been talking about ventilating barns for decades, and I view that as a concept of a prior century. The new concept is to ventilate the microenvironment around the calf, and in doing so,

Through further research, Nordlund was led to a concept he highly recommends today: naturally ventilated barns with an open ridge and supplemented with positive pressure tube ventilation. This is in addition to calf pens that are built with alternating solid and mesh panels to both deter harboring bacteria and encourage a more social environment.

Natural ventilation is driven by wind and thermal buoyance of warm air rising and falling. In the Upper Midwest, there are periods throughout the day when temperatures inside the barn may be colder than the outside, which leads to uneven ventilation of clean, fresh air in the calf barn.

“Natural ventilation works really well 80 to 90 percent of the time,” Nordlund said. “Then, with the tubes to support it, we think they can do a remarkably good job.”

Unlike tube ventilation used in the 1970s, the new tubes are custom designed to t a calf barn and assist in moving air with the already-established natural ventilation.

“The technical difference [between the new generation of tubes and those installed in the ‘70s] is we want uniformity along the length for an even ow, and control the distance and size of the holes to avoid drafts,” Nordlund said.

Connecting fans should be installed on the outside of the facility, allowing the system to properly change the interior volume of air four times per hour.

old tiestall barns to deliver fresh air to the space around every calf,” Nordlund said.

Nesting ability, proper drainage aids in eliminating bacteria With adequate airow, calves may need additional means of heat to maintain their core body temperature.

This can be achieved through calf jackets or ample bedding to encourage full nesting.

In Nordlund’s research, he observed three scores of nesting – 1, 2 and 3 – with 1 being able to see the hooves and legs of a calf while they lay in straw; 2 allowing only visibility of the legs; and 3 being completely buried.

“When we had a nesting score of 1 and medium clean air, we would expect 55 percent of calves to have respiratory problems,” Nordlund said. “If we had the same fairly dirty air, but the calves were nesting cores 3, we had less problems. We can do just as much with bedding as we can with clean air.”

However, without proper drainage established in the barns, the deep-bedded pens collect moisture and secrete it into the alleyways.

“Solid concrete ooring without drainage is a health risk,” Nordlund said. … Without drainage, bedding soaks up moisture and becomes quite wet. We’re putting calves into cold stress with cold barns and moisture for bedding.”

To eliminate this risk, as well as the spread of diseases from barn to barn as moisture is leaked into the walkway, Nordlund suggests using a shallow gravel layer prior to adding bedding in the pen.

“This removes the liquid from the bedding as soon as possible,” Nordlund said. “When it’s cleaned, they might remove a little bit of the gravel and replenish it with fresh gravel.”

Nordlund suggests entirely replacing the gravel beds every one to three years, depending on the particles used for bedding.

Additionally, barns with concrete ooring are most effective in eliminating moisture if a drainage system is directed towards the back of the pens, rather than the center of the barn.

“We’d like to see this to avoid boot trafc,” Nordlund said. “There’s a crown system in the center with gutters for milk and water, and then there’s another setup behind the pens.”

All in, all out program targets calf health When constructing a new calf facility, Nordlund suggests having a barn that has adequate space for the calves, but is not too big.

“The goal is to create a trickle in and all out program,” Nordlund said.

A smaller barn, or multiple smaller barns, minimize exposure of the young calves to the oldest calves, and also allows the building to rest in between groups. “[Resting] has been a powerful tool for breaking disease cycles,” Nordlund said. “I suggest the fan and tube be running during the empty time because it will help dry the barn out between uses.”

There are several other factors that may affect calf health over time. Paying attention to ventilation, bedding and drainage, and moves during weaning will help enhance overall health as the trend in calf barns continues in the industry.

Robots might milk nearly half of U.S. herds by 2025

Lower labor cost one primary attraction

MADISON, Wis. – Robots will milk more and more of the United States’ cows as time passes, according to Matt Daley, who is the senior vice president of sales, milking and dairy farming for North America at GEA Farm Technologies, a supplier of agricultural technology.

Daley spoke Jan. 17 at the Dairy Strong Conference in Madison, Wis., organized by Dairy Business Association (DBA).

Daley spoke on the practicality of robots for large herds. Beginning his presentation, he said relatively few herds are now milked by robots. But if the industry trend continues, that amount could greatly increase during

the next several years. “It’s estimated that 2 percent of dairy herds in the U.S. are currently being milked by robots, and that number could rise to 40 or 50 percent over the next ďƒžve to seven years,â€? Daley said.

Daley mentioned three aspects of robotic milking that dairy producers ďƒžnd attractive. One is that it’s better for the animal, since each milking is the same, with no variation.

The second selling point for robotic milkers is that they allow for better management capabilities, Daley said.

They allow dairy producers to focus on other aspects of cow management, rather than on the actual milking.

And third, robotic milking systems solve many labor issues, Daley said. With robots, labor needs are reduced, meaning fewer employees are needed. That cuts the amount of government paperwork and regulation a dairy farm encounters.

But the main part of solving labor issues, Daley said, is that robots lock in labor costs.

He offered a parlor case study comparing labor costs for a robotic rotary versus a conventional rotary each with 60-stalls milking 2,250 cows three times a day. Though both parlor

types required 6.7 hours to complete one milking shift, the difference came in the amount of human labor. The robotic rotary required only one person to oversee each milking while the conventional parlor required four people to complete all necessary milking tasks during each shift. This scenario assumes hourly wages of $17 per hour for one person to oversee milking on the robotic rotary parlor and $15 per hour for each of the four workers milking on the conventional rotary.

Findings from this parlor case study included substantial labor savings from robotic rotary milking: – Overall annual labor costs are estimated to be $168,000 for a robotic rotary and $594,000 for a conventional rotary – Annual labor cost per cow were $73 per cow for a robotic rotary compared to $259 per cow on a conventional rotary – Annual labor cost per 220 pounds of milk were $0.56 for a robotic rotary and $1.99 for the conventional rotary The robotic rotary offered total savings of $4.8 million in labor costs over 10 years. “Farmers already deal with unpredictable weather,� Daley said. “They

don’t want to deal with unpredictable labor costs.�

One farm beneďƒžting from the use of robots is Hoffman Happy Holsteins in Marinette County, Wis. This 40-unit robotic rotary parlor has been in use since November 2017 and was the ďƒžrst of its brand in the United States.

Another two of these robotic rotary parlors have been used in Canada since early 2016. One of those is at Gracemar Farms, Chilliwack, British Columbia.

There, the 60-stall robotic rotary milks 1,250 cows. It milks 350 cows per hour with just one person operating it, Daley said. The cow platform makes a revolution in eight to 12 minutes, and the Gracemar herd is averaging 81 pounds of milk per cow, per day.

Daley also touched on robotic Monobox milkers that accommodate one cow at a time. Those, Daley said, can milk as many as 65 cows per box.

Robotic milkers, according to Daley, can be attractive because of the lifestyle changes that can result. “No ďƒžxed milking times means more ďƒ&#x;exibility in your daily schedule, and the physically demanding milking process is no longer a task,â€? he said.

My wife, Bonnie, and I have three boys. We farm 800 acres and plant 350 acres of corn, 150 acres of soybeans, 100 acres of oats, 50 acres of sunflowers and we have 150 acres of hay. We have 50 acres of corn to combine yet. The price was too low last fall and I didn’t want to have to dry it, so we left it in the field. We have sandy soil with center pivots and irrigate 50 percent of our land.

I used to farm with my parents and my brother, Tim. Tim and I used to share equipment, as well, to save on costs.

I farm with my wife, Corena, and three of our children, Matt, Michele and Michael, all help us on our farm.

We have an older daughter, Monica, who works off the farm, but helps when needed.

We farm 3,500 acres, have 50 beef cows and milk 60 cows. This year we will plant around 1,400 acres of wheat, 1,200 acres of soybeans, 500 acres of corn, 150 acres of canola and we have 250 acres of alfalfa. We have a sandy loam soil and will hopefully get in the field in the next 10 days to two weeks.

I farm here with my wife, Karen, and my daughter, Amanda Schnell. We milk 110 cows and have 200 acres of tillable land. We do 100 acres of corn, 30 acres of oats underseeded with alfalfa and then have 70 acres of preexisting alfalfa. We make baleage out of oats for heifer feed. We have a lot of clay soils, a lot of hills and some black dirt. Our farm is strip cropped and our biggest field is 18 acres. I milk 76 cows with the help of a full-time hired hand. I’m 57 and I grew up here. I used to farm with my dad. I farm 260 acres and this year we plan to put in 150 acres of corn and 30 acres of soybeans.

We also have 15 acres of rye that is greening up, 10 acres of triticale and 40 acres of hay. We farm on medium to heavy soil. I think we could get in the field in early May.

My wife, Amanda, and I have four children, and we milk 76 cows and farm about 600 acres of land. We started dairying 20 years ago. This year we plan to plant 300 acres of corn, 70 acres of soybeans, 30 acres of oats and we also have 200 acres of alfalfa. I would say 90 percent of our soil is clay based. I’m thinking it will be two weeks before we get into the fields.

I farm with my brother, Chris, and our father, Don. We will be planting 350 acres of corn, 300 acres of soybeans, 125 acres of wheat and will have 400 acres of alfalfa. A blizzard on the weekend of April 15 left a 7-foot high snow drift on the north side of our barn. No one has been able to do any fieldwork in our area. We are hoping for some warmer and drier weather so that our cattle yards can dry out a little and we can get started with spring planting.

95 cows, 500 acres I’ve been farming with my brothers, Tom and Tony, since about 1980 near Sparta, Wis. We milk 95 cows in a parlor; they are housed in a freestall. In total we have about 230 head. We crop about 500 acres, rented and owned, raising corn, hay and beans. We cash crop some of the beans. Our soil is pretty sandy. I always say we grow wonderful sandburs. Pretty much all of our snow is gone now. In April, we’ve had 27 inches of snow, and about a half inch of rain in between. We just started today (April 24) putting fertilizer on the corn ground.

We’re hoping to start planting corn in the next week to 10 days, and we are hoping to get some hay seeded in this weekend. The road bans in our area just finally lifted Monday, and the barn swallows just showed back up today.

700 cows, 2,050 acres

I farm with my wife and son near Colby, Wis., and have a daughter in college who is studying nursing. We milk 700 cows in a double-12 parlor. The cows are housed in a freestall barn. Monday night (April 23) we suffered a barn fire where an endwall caught on fire. Luckily, we were able to have the cattle back in the facilities and continue milking six hours later. We have 10 employees who work in the barn. We own 550 acres and rent an additional 1,500. We do all of our own fieldwork, except manure hauling. Everything we raise is used to feed the herd. We chop about 1,000 acres of corn silage and another 300 acres of snaplage, as well as grow 400 acres of alfalfa and 300 acres of soybean. Our ground is all heavy clay. We’ve had a couple of warm dry days that have melted most of the snow. We still have a little mostly around fence lines and in the woods. If the weather holds out, we’ll be able to start spreading manure in about two weeks. They are talking rain and 70 degrees for next week, which would be big.

I milk 190 cows with my two sons near Juda, Wis. The cows are housed in a freestall barn and milked in a parlor.

We crop around 900 acres, raising corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa and oats. We cash crop some. We have a mix of soils and have hills and heavy bottom land. Our snow is all gone; the last precipitation we had was last Wednesday (April 18) when we got an inch or two of snow and sleet. We are just finishing up planting our oats, but some guys are done with them.

I’ve seen one or two guys planting some corn around home, but driving home from Iowa today (April 24), I didn’t see any corn planted in southern Wisconsin. I’m thinking we’ll start our corn next week.

100 cows, 800 acres

My wife and I farm just outside of Barronett, Wis. We have a hired girl who has been with us for 22 years and is a wonderful employee. We milk 100 cows. Our tiestall barn burnt five years ago and we rebuilt with a freestall and parlor, downsizing from 150 cows. We own 450 acres and rent 350 acres. We raise alfalfa and corn, and cash crop some of the corn. When corn prices were high, we were running over 600 acres of corn, but let some land go when corn prices went down. We still have a lot of snow, with just a few bare spots starting to show through. Last weekend we had over 20 inches of snow, and we’ve gotten over 40 inches here in April. It only got to 55 degrees today (April 24), so it’s going to be slow melting. This will be the first year in 25 years I haven’t planted corn in April. Last year, we were finished planting on May 5. We have a lot of heavy loam clay. It can be pretty wet, but in dry years, I am able to grow crops. I’m concerned we will have a drought this year because of all the moisture we have had this spring.

65 cows, 600 acres I farm with my dad near Ellsworth, Wis., milking 65 cows in a parlor and housed in a freestall barn.

We have one employee.

We crop about 600 acres, growing mostly hay and corn. Last year was the first time we did some beans and plan to do some again this year. We cash crop about 200 acres and sell some hay. Our ground is a mix of pretty much everything, from sand to heavier soil, and we have a fair amount of rock. We got about 14 inches of snow last week, but most of it is pretty much gone now.

It seemed to have soaked in well, so the frost must be coming out, and the top layer is drying pretty well. I’d guess we’d be able to start getting into the fields in the next week or so.

400 cows, 1,200 acres

My wife, Kerri, and I are in a partnership with my brother, Shawn, and parents, Mike and Cindy. We milk 400 cows and farm 1,200 acres. We plant 850 acres of corn, 275 acres of alfalfa, 60 to 100 acres of barley as a cover crop and approximately 50 to 100 acres of soybeans. We have a mixed bag of soils; we have tama, downs, clay, sand, etc. We started hauling liquid manure yesterday. We’ve been doing some digging in the fields, as well.

Today (April 25) or tomorrow we should be seeding alfalfa. Somebody in the area started with anhydrous yesterday.

900 cows, 1,100 acres We’re a third generation farm near Brownsville, Wis. My Grandpa started the farm, then my dad and now I’m the third generation. We have 900 cows total, plus youngstock. Some heifers are raised off-farm. We run about 1,100 acres, growing corn, a small amount of soybean, alfalfa and winter wheat. We just recently started the soybeans to break up the corn. About 80 percent of our soil is pretty light and good. We have maybe 200 acres that are heavier clay that you have to let dry out more before you can get in. We had 6 or 7 inches of snow last week, but most of it is gone now. I’d guess by the end of the week, or early next week, we’ll be starting new seeding and the custom applicators will be coming to start hauling manure.

I dairy farm with my brothers, Adam and Stefan, and our father, Lee. We will raise 1,000 acres of corn and about 200 acres of alfalfa this year. On April 18, we received 6 inches of heavy, wet snow. We didn’t really need the moisture, but you take what you get.

We planted about 160 acres of rye as a cover crop last fall, but we’re not sure if it will grow up in time to be chopped for silage. Nobody in our area has done any fieldwork other than haul a little manure in the morning when it’s still frozen. We will just have to be patient.

A day in the life of the Wiechman family Preparation for spring eldwork consumed April 23

FREEPORT, Minn. – Every day, Peter Wiechman puts in a lot of steps on his dairy farm. April 23 was no different.

“Right now, I’m the lone worker,” Peter said. “On a good day, I put in 22,000 steps on my step counter.”

Peter milks 59 dairy cows on a farm site near Freeport, Minn., he has owned since 2014. Previously, he was renting the facilities.

“It was nice to nally have my own farm,” Peter said. “It is pretty cool to say this is mine.”

The morning of April 23 began like any other. Peter woke early in the morning to ll the TMR mixer with

baleage and dry hay. Peter’s milking herd ration consists of baleage, haylage, dry hay, corn silage and a protein mix.

He then swept the mangers and was milking by 5 a.m.

“I always start the day with a plan, but it can change 10 times throughout the day,” Peter said. “The easiest thing to do is have a list, and if you don’t get it done today then there is always tomorrow.”

After milking, Peter fed the lactating herd, cleaned the barn and checked for heats.

“I need to get the disc out and get that greased up,” Peter said. “There will be odds and ends stuff to get done, but overall, enough of a busy day.”

Once morning chores were completed, Peter retreat-

Typically, the Wiechmans plant oats, alfalfa and corn on 300 acres. Over the last few years, they have also incorporated soybeans into the planting schedule.

“It’s a lot of fun making hay, but it’s also a lot of work,” Peter said. “But with the milk price hurting a bit right now, it’s been nice to have that diversity to help offset things.”

Peter started helping Jerome and Joyce Klaphake dairy farm in 2001, right after he graduated high school.

Then, Peter and his brother, David, purchased the cows in 2005 and continued renting

the facility. By 2008, Peter bought out his brother before later purchasing the farm site.

While Peter’s farm is a one-man job, he continues to look towards family for help when needed.

“We share equipment with my dad and brother, and Dad helps when we’re in a pinch,” Peter said. “When push comes to shove, I’ll call my brother or cousin, and they’ll come help me out.”

Peter also said he is fortunate to have a network of dairy farmers to rely on for

“If you were the only person in a 30-mile radius milking cows, you would have it tough,” Peter said. “The mental game is half of dairy farming. You can get down on your days, but you call people and talk things through.”

Once Peter was nished with his to-do list for the day, he played a quick round of ball with his sons before it was time for evening chores.

Then, Samantha and the little farmhands helped water the calves.

“I really enjoy doing calf chores with the boys,” Samantha said. “The boys love to help and be outside.”

As the day came to fruition, Peter was satised with the work he had done and the time he spent with his family.

“The day went better than expected,” Peter said. “Some days you get overworked – you’re in the eld and you think you need to be in the barn, or you’re in the barn and think you need to be in the elds. Today, it’s been a good day.”

Get an apple sauce you really like. Make the sweet bread crumbs by cooking the three ingredients in a pan (it takes about five minutes). Spread the mixture on a baking sheet and let it cool before using it. Crush the macaroon cookies and mix them with the sweet bread crumbs. To follow tradition, get a big glass bowl and layer the applesauce and breadcrumb mixture until the ingredients are gone. Put in the fridge to cool. Whip up the heavy whipping cream and add a layer on top before serving.

1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup butter Mix first three ingredients like pie crust. Roll out on cookie sheet. Chill. Then, Mix together following ingredients by first melting butter in saucepan. Mix in flour. Add boiling water. Continue boiling and stir until balls form in middle of pan. Remove from heat. Add 3 eggs one at a time. Spoon mixture on top of crust. Bake at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Cool. Frost with powdered sugar frosting with almond flavoring. Sprinkle with nuts.
