Neighbors work together to keep milkers going Hurley, Suess combine herds during power outage

GRAND MEADOW, Minn. – With very few neighboring dairies, neighbors Tom Hurley and Phil Suess like to lean on each other when times get tough.

That was the case during a recent winter storm that hit much of South Dakota, southern Minnesota and a portion of Wisconsin. The rain, ice, snow and wind knocked out power to many across the southern portion of the Minnesota, including Hurley and Suess, who milk 24 cows and 40 cows, respectively, on their dairies near Grand Meadow, Minn.

The dairy farmers’ power went out during the late hours of April 10.

“I did a quick drive around [the next morning] and realized how bad it was going to be. Then I went and talked with my neighbor, Phil, who lives right across the road,” Hurley said.

During past power outages, Suess would share his generator with Hurley so each could get their chores done.

“Tom and I have worked well together since he moved in across the road [in the 1980s],” Suess said. “If he needs help with something, I go over there, and if I need help with something, he comes over here. It’s nice to have a good neighbor next door to help out.”

Two years ago, Hurley redid the service to his electrical pole and did not include a generator hookup, leaving him with no way of getting power to his barn during the outage.

“There was no hesitation in what we would do,” Suess said.

Suess welcomed Hurley’s 23 cows into his generator-powered barn for a temporary stay when a snowstorm April 10 caused a three-day power outage on their dairies near Grand Meadow, Minn. at this time, the two thought it would be easiest to bring Hurley’s 23 milking cows to his barn and ll the empty stalls.

Only six cows needed to be kept in a shed outside for the duration of their stay.

“When we made that decision, I started leading cows over, and he (Suess) was milking cows already with the generator,” Hurley said.

Most of Hurley’s cows are halter broke, making the short 100-foot walk between driveways easier.

Morning and night, Hurley helped Suess with chores.

Since each dairyman milks in a tiestall barn, the cows did not have much of an adjustment to the housing style.

ADVANCE NOTICE:

The feed was virtually the same, too.

“I’ve been working with Phil for awhile on his nutrition program, and we buy a lot of feedstuffs together already so the cows were virtually eating the same diet anyway,” Hurley said.

Neither herd is fed a TMR. “We feed a little more grass, and he feeds a little more alfalfa, but ultimately the grain mix was very similar,” Hurley said.

Both of the neighbors also belong to Rock Dell Creamery. When the milk truck showed up at Suess’ farm for the rst time during the outage, Hurley said there was no need to stop at his dairy nor split Suess’ milk check.

“Phil stood the cost of the electricity, he stood the cost of housing them and feeding them. The milk is his,” Hurley said.

Hurley also had to dump 1,700 pounds of milk that was in his tank at the time the electricity went out.

“It smelled good and stayed cold, but we weren’t going to take a chance with bacteria issues so we dumped it,” Hurley said.

Although Hurley has a small portable generator for his house, it only has enough power to keep the freezers, refrigerators and sump pump going. It left Hurley and his wife, Lisa, without heat and without power to their kitchen appliances to cook.

Suess and his wife, Deb, insisted the Hurleys eat several meals with them.

“They were very persistent that we had to come in and eat,” Hurley said.

It is all a part of being a good neighbor, Suess said.

“The conversations during chores and dinner – it was fun,” Suess said.

Power was restored around 6:30 p.m. April 13. During evening chores, Hurley started to lead his cattle back to his farm after they were done being milked.

“We can’t say thank you enough to our neighbor Phil for letting us bring our cows over there and letting us participate in their lives,” Hurley said.

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Just because someone works on a dairy farm does not mean that person has had adequate training to work with animals.

“We need the think about the changing face of our workforce and how we think about that workforce in order to prepare them to work on the farm. Sometimes we make wrong assumptions about what they know,” Jeff Bender said.

Bender, a veterinarian by training and codirector of the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center (UMASH), presented, “Be Calm – The Importance of Thoughtful Working with Cattle” April 17 at the Upper Midwest Dairy Industry Association and Iowa Association for Food Protection spring meeting in Rochester, Minn.

Bender said on-farm training is important to reduce injuries or death. Agriculture workers are eight times more likely to die on the job than other workers, and also have a 40% higher rate of nonfatal injuries.

“Animal agriculture has an even higher rate than other agriculture,” Bender said.

Many injuries are from cattle, Bender said.

And that is based on the death and injuries reported and published.

“That’s just the very tip of the iceberg,” Bender said. “What happens below that iceberg … and what you hear at the farm is much more realistic. You hear about the near misses. You hear about the children that got a broken arm or the things that don’t make the news. That’s the reality – there’s a huge piece of that iceberg that we don’t really address when we think about worker injuries.”

Bender said it is important for any person working on a dairy – whether a family member or an employee – to know proper animal handling and equipment techniques.

A survey done by UMASH that asked dairy producers about cattle handling practices reported most had learned their skills from family.

“Maybe one brother was good, but another brother wasn’t as good of a teacher. You can imagine there is quite a bit of variability,” Bender said. “And most producers thought the skill of the human handler was the most important factor to establish good cow ow.”

Add in the challenges of limited time

along with employees who have a language barrier and injuries can rise quickly, Bender said.

“One thing for us to remember is …

54% of the labor force on dairies is immigrants,” Bender said.

The workforce on dairies has changed over the years, Bender said.

“Those dairies that employ immigrant labor produce nearly 80% of the U.S. milk supply. They’re an important part of the economics of what drives our dairy industry. So its important to keep them healthy and well, and understand them and the way they learn,” Bender said.

UMASH has been offering training to immigrant workers on Wisconsin dairies for several years and has started to do the same in Minnesota. Most of the farm workers they train do not speak English and nearly 70% had no prior health and safety training.

A big portion of this training reviews key principles of low stress animal handling. Success factors in how to work with animals can be taught using the acronym PALS, which stands for patience, angle, location and speed.

“Workers need to be patient when working with cows. They need to consider the angle of their approach towards a cow. They need to think about their location in relationship to the cow, and they need to think about how fast cows move.

They tend to be slower than us,” Bender said.

Cows walk at a pace of 2-3 miles per hour while people walk at 3-4 miles per hour, Bender said.

To look at this further, Bender said it is important to look at the biology of the animal. Cows tend to move in the direction they are facing and they tend to follow one another. They also have a tendency to return to where they came from, and are trainable.

“Every interaction creates memories for them. If it’s a bad memory they’ll remember that,” Bender said.

Cows respond to pressure and release of pressure, including gates, people or other cows.

“We can work with that pressure zone to move animals. Animals can vary in their pressure zone depending on how frequently they’re worked with,” Bender said. “These are really big animals and the cow really is always right.”

Overall, Bender hopes these training sessions help, and hopes other farmers will do additional training on their farms.

“If we understand animal behavior and establish good practices of working with cows, hopefully that will minimize the injuries and risks occurring on dairies, improve animal welfare and improve protability,” Bender said.

Southwest Minnesota farmers go several days without power

WORTHINGTON, Minn. – In southwest Minnesota, Dean Christopherson was one of many who went without power following a winter storm. “We got ice pellets, rain and just a little bit of snow ‌,â€? Christopherson said. “We also had terrible winds. The winds were so strong. That’s what broke the poles off.â€?

Many broken poles and down power lines caused widespread power outages in southwest Minnesota April 10. Christopherson said electricity went out at about 10:20 p.m. on his 39-cow dairy near Worthington, Minn.

To do chores, Christopherson ran a generator; however, it had issues with the alternator and could only power one large entity at a time. “When we milked cows, we could only do that.

When I fed cows, I shut the power off in every other building so I could feed, and then I couldn’t do it the way I wanted to,� he said.

Chores took an extra three hours each day until the power was restored on the evening of April 13.

During that time, Christopherson said his herd’s milk production went down about 500 pounds each day.

Christopherson has experienced power outages in the past including during his early dairying career Jan. 10, 1975. “You couldn’t see to get to the barn for three days.

That was the worst,� he said.

However, the community will also feel the affects of this recent outage. “It’s going to be very costly to the co-ops and power companies for all the damage done,� he said.

Lenzen likes simplicity Silver Shade Dairy operates at low cost with seasonal calving

ROSE CITY, Minn. – Spring is a busy time for farmers, but for Nolan Lenzen, it is especially hectic. Lenzen has seasonally calved for 14 years, and April is when his cows begin to freshen. “I want to keep things as simple as I can,� said Lenzen of his management practices. “I grew up milking cows year-round and I think it’s a ridiculous amount of work.�

Lenzen milks 35 cows in a single-10 pit parlor with his children – Halie, 17, Brody, 15, Ty, 13 and Evan, 11 – near Rose City, Minn.

In every aspect of Lenzen’s dairy operation, he strives to remain proďƒžtable and optimize his resources.

“When you’re broke, you’re either going to get out or try something else and keep going until something works. �

To accommodate the calving style, which keeps Lenzen’s cows dry from January to April, he plans for expenses and carefully manages his farm ďƒžnances. “The easiest dollar you’ll make is the dollar you never spend,â€? Lenzen said. “If I’m going to spend a dollar, I better get two. I want to double my money, or I’m not going to spend it in the ďƒžrst place.â€?

Lenzen began farming in 2002, after earning a dairy management degree from Ridgewater College. Back then, he wanted to milk 80 cows with robots and have a slatted-ďƒ&#x;oor freestall barn.

However, Lenzen’s start in the industry was different. He milked 40 cows in a tiestall barn, fed TMR and used rbST in an effort to push milk production. “I was so broke. I made $150,000 one year, but didn’t have enough money to ďƒžx my truck,â€? Lenzen said. “Something needed to change. Every farmer I knew was broke, and we all kept paying other people and not ourselves. So, I worked on cutting out the middleman.

I became the vet, feed man and ďƒžgured it out. I had pasture for feed, so that’s

what they ate. Now, I pay myself.�

Lenzen started to seasonally calve and rotationally graze his herd in 2005.

He ďƒžrst read about seasonal calving in a magazine article about a farmer from New Zealand. He knew it was something he wanted to try, and has been a fan since. “When you’re broke, you’re either going to get out or try something else and keep going until something works,â€?

Lenzen said. “This seems to work for me and what I want.�

Lenzen keeps a low-cost budget by cutting most costs other farmers think of as necessary. He has not had a vet bill in ďƒžve years, and for the past 10 years, he has only had the vet out to his farm a few times.

“Basically my only expenses are diesel fuel, bale twine and basic cleaning supplies,� Lenzen said.

He has no nutritionist, and manages both the cows and youngstock in the same manner, rotationally grazing them. “My mineral program is Redman’s salt,� he said. “If you want to get 30,000 pounds of milk, you’ll have to supplement her, but if you want to let her milk naturally, then cows really don’t need much.�

Through discipline, planning and simplicity, Lenzen has been able to continue dairying. Other than his kids, Lenzen is the sole worker on the farm.

“It’s all kind of a one-man show,” Lenzen said.

“My daughter helps with evening milking and my oldest boy will start helping this summer.”

Lenzen saves money throughout the year to supplement his living expenses in the months when he is not getting a milk check.

“It takes a lot of discipline,” he said. “A lot of people see $4,000 in their bank account and it’s burning a hole in their pocket. I have to really be disciplined and plan out my purchases. I pre-pay for anything I can.”

When Lenzen thinks about the future of his farm, he envisions dairy farming in the same manner as he is today. He particularly enjoys the setup of his parlor, which he retrotted into the old dairy barn by himself, for a mere cost of $10,000.

“It’s all simplied,” Lenzen said. “The parlor doesn’t have water, so we treat it like a dairy barn and scrape it down after every milking and carry milkers in and out of the milk room.”

Lenzen has incorporated Angus bulls into his herd and is leaning away from raising youngstock. He has plans to replace his heifer pen with a few beef cows.

It is all part of his focus on simplicity.

It’s pretty wet; the ground is extremely saturated. We need some heat. We are struggling where to RAINFALL put animals. They are TOTALS Last 2 tearing things up. Today (4/23) I got the alfalfa seed and oats. We plan to plant half Alforex Low Lignin alfalfa and the other half will be RAINFALL regular alfalfa. We have TOTALS to get the pit empty. We Last 2 are waiting on the cusWeeks tom guy to get started.

We have about 1.2 million gallons to apply with a drag hose. Some of our older stands of alfalfa look tough. I would say we probably have a 50-60% stand. I Since April 14 2.2” will seed some grasses, including rye, into those stands so we can get one more year out of the fields.

Depending on the soil, some ground welcomed the rain and others have standing water in them.

The grass has greened RAINFALL up the last few days TOTALS and my oats are just Last 2 coming up. In the Weeks area, early potatoes and small grains are going in. Our alfalfa fields are greening up 1.1” and appear to be OK and are welcoming the warmer weather. Since April 14 1.1” Manure is getting hauled and corn planting will be coming as soon as the weather improves.

I finished my seeding yesterday just before the rain came. Some people around me have their seeding done and some RAINFALL are discing and chisel TOTALS plowing. Neighbors are Last 2 still hauling manure.

Weeks The condition of the fields really depends on where you’re at. Our farm is pretty hilly and 2” looks good. The hay fields are starting to green up and the northfacing winter wheat. Global milk production on the decline

The April 16 Global Dairy Trade auction (GDT) registered its 10th consecutive session of gain, inching 0.5% higher on the weighted average of products offered. That compares to the April 2 rise of 0.8%, 1.9% on March 19, and 3.3% on March 5. Sellers brought 16.2 million pounds of product to the market, down from 17.9 million on April 2.

The gains were led by anhydrous milkfat, up 4.2%, following a 3.7% rise April 2. Butter was right behind, up 3.5%, after it climbed 5.8% last time.

Cheddar was up 1.4%, following a 3.2% boost, and skim milk powder was up 0.2%, after rising 1.8% in the last event.

The losses were led by lactose, down 3.4%, rennet casein, down 2.4%, and whole milk powder was off 0.7%, after a 1.3% descent last time.

FC Stone equates the GDT 80 percent butterfat butter price to $2.4533 per pound U.S., up 7.5 cents from the last session. CME butter closed Thursday at $2.2825. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.9593 per pound, up 3.2 cents from the last event and compares to Thursday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.6675.

GDT skim milk powder averaged $1.1169 per pound, and compares to $1.1194 last time. Whole milk powder averaged $1.4829, down from $1.4910 last time.

CME Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Thursday at $1.00 per pound.

Speaking of trade, the April 17 Daily Dairy Report (DDR) says “U.S. dairy product exports in February were mixed, with cheese and butterfat exports higher and nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NDM/ SMP) and whey lower. U.S. dairy exports to Canada and China have suffered since trade disputes began last summer, but exports of NDM and cheese to Mexico continue to grow. Despite retaliatory tariffs targeting cheese, U.S. exporters shipped 71.7 million pounds of cheese, up from 62.1 million pounds a year ago and the highest total for any February in the past decade,” according to the DDR. Cash dairy prices meanwhile were mixed in the Good Friday holiday shortened week as traders absorbed Tuesday’s GDT and anticipated the April 22 release of the March Milk Production report. The 40-pound Cheddar blocks closed Thursday at $1.6675 per pound, up 2 1/4-cents on the week and 6 1/2-cents above a year ago. The 500-pound barrels nished at $1.5150, down a disappointing 10 1/4-cents on the week but 1 1/2-cents above a year ago. 14 cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME and 10 of barrel.

Cheese contacts continue to report bullish de-

mand in the Midwest, according to Dairy Market News. Curd, mozzarella and specialty cheesemakers say there has been a seasonal push from buyers.

Cheese inventories are generally in good balance though long inventories remain a concern nationally.

Midwest contacts report that more and more dairy farms calling it quits and question what that means for upcoming milk availability.

Western cheese output remains active with plenty of milk going to the vats. Some processors are attempting to control massive growth in supplies through planned output reduction. With demand not as good as they want and more milk available, cheese production control seems one of the best ways to manage inventories from building too much. Cheese sales are reported as a bit mixed and the tenor of the western cheese market is “somewhat unsettled.”

Cash butter saw a Thursday nish at $2.2825 per pound, up 2 1/2-cents on the week but 3 1/4-cents below a year ago, with 9 cars sold on the week.

Butter makers are still receiving sufcient cream supplies at similar prices to the previous week. They do not expect this to last much longer as cream has tightened recently and is expected to continue this path. Retail sales are down somewhat, as late holiday orders ebbed. Still, butter makers say demand is up on average, year over year.

Western butter makers suggest pre-holiday orders that had been going strong have “evaporated” while bulk butter demand is “generally steady.” Contacts relay that production levels are stable. They are getting offers of extra cream, but so far, it has not been the ood of cream that is sometimes expected at this point in the year but butter stocks are building somewhat, according to DMN. Interestingly, the DDR reports that Japan has increased its tariff rate quotas for butter but reduced them for nonfat dry milk for the country’s current scal year (April 1, 2018 – March 30, 2020). “Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries announced that Japan intends to import 20,000 metric tons of butter, up 7,000 from last year, due to lingering supply impacts from a September 2018 earthquake in southern Hokkaido and growing domestic demand for milkfat from the food processing industry,” the DDR says.

Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Thursday at $1.00 per pound, highest CME price since February 6, 2019, up 1 1/4-cents on the week, and 19 1/2-cents above a year ago, with only 3 cars nding new homes on the week.

The DDR’s Sarina Sharp wrote in the April 12 Milk Producers Council (MPC) newsletter that “Concern is growing among NDM buyers that milk powder prices could reach into the $1.15 range, if not higher later this year.” She says “The market sentiment now is that the longer prices remain in the high 90 cent range this spring, the higher prices could move up later this year.”

She adds that “This year will be the rst year in ve years that market prices have not been weighed down by an overhang of EU Intervention skim milk powder stocks. If the higher nonfat dry milk price levels materialize, they could result in some of the highest-Class IV milk prices in a long time for western dairy producers, which would be much needed good news.”

May Class I milk prices will rise, driven by strength in cheese. The Agriculture Department announced the May Federal order Class I base price at $16.42 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 66 cents from April, $1.98 above May 2018, and the highest Class I price since December 2017. This is the price that each Federal order adds its Class I differential to, to determine its Class I price.

The ve month Class I average is at $15.72, up from $14.32 at this time a year ago, but compares to $16.47 in 2017.

This is the rst Federal order Class I price not using the “higher of” value of milk that goes to cheese or butter-powder, in determining the Class I value, a practice for nearly 20 years, but one that put processors at a disadvantage.

The MPC’s Geoff VandenHeuvel explains in his April 12 newsletter the reasons for the problem and how processors and producers agreed to solve the issue. Long complicated story short, the advanced Class III and Class IV pricing factors will now be averaged together and 74 cents will be added to that in the formula.

U.S. dairy margins were relatively at over the rst half of April with limited movement in the milk and feed markets, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. The MW stated that “The milk market has shown a rmer tone of late with some features that may be positive for prices longer-term. First, poor margins throughout 2018 and early 2019 have accelerated the pace of dairy herd contraction, with the number of licensed dairy herds dropping to 37,468 last year from 40,199 in 2017 according to USDA. The 6.8% yearover-year contraction is the worst percentage decline since the data series began in 2003, with that pace likely increasing in early 2019 based on year-to-date dairy cow slaughter which is up 8.4% in the Midwest region and 5.6% in Eastern states.”

“Meanwhile, although U.S. milk production on the whole has been increasingly slightly with more efciency in the dairy herd, global milk production is on the decline. For the season which began in July, 2018, Australia has experienced a 6.4% drop in milk collections. A persistent drought has decimated pastures and raised feed costs substantially. Production has also declined in Argentina due to poor economic conditions while it has been at in New Zealand.”

“Along with the U.S., milk production could increase up to 2.5% in the EU without offsetting the combined milk production decit from the other major dairy exporters which has prevailed since November. This dynamic has been slowing whittling away at the global dairy product surplus. Meanwhile, USDA

Sentiment in the market would probably be even more bearish if not for the recent severe weather in the Upper Midwest that will likely delay corn planting,” the MW concluded.

Safety nets have been a part of dairy’s nancial landscape for many years but the net has changed since the old Price Support program and keeps changing. Hoard’s Dairyman managing editor Corey Geiger talked about the current Dairy Margin Coverage in the April 22 Dairy Radio Now broadcast and quoted House Agriculture Committee Chairman, Rep. Colin Peterson (D-MN).

“When it comes to the new Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program, I want to make sure dairy farmers and their lenders know what the point of the program is. It isn’t to get a bunch of money out of the federal government every year; it’s to make sure that dairy farmers have an adequate safety net when they need it.”

Geiger quickly added “This is a time when they need it,” and he reported that House and Senate members have called on Agriculture Secretary Sonny Purdue to get the program rolled out right now.”

The Farm Bill was signed into law in December but one of the hold ups is at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) ofces because the Farm Bill included a refund of premium payments under the old Margin Protection program. “Believe it or not,” Geiger said. “They were done on paper and not electronically so it all needs to be entered into the electronic format before proceeding.”

Farmers who sign up for the program will see a January Tier 1 premium, which is for the rst 5 million pounds of milk, of $1.51 per cwt., according to Geiger, and that January DMC payment will basically pay for the premiums for the entire year of 2019. He adds that February’s projected payment is $1.28 and says farmers will be able to sign up at their local FSA ofce by June 17.

He also reported that the Ofce of the Chief Economist is working with the University of Wisconsin’s Dr. Mark Stevenson to develop a “decision tool” to assist dairy farmers and says it should be ready by May 1.

Geiger says Rep. Peterson stated that “One of my biggest priorities as chairman is to grow demand for U.S. dairy products so that dairy farmers can get all their income directly from the marketplace, but until that is the case, the DMC will be there so dairy farmers have a chance to keep going when times are tough.” The Agriculture Department’s latest Crop Progress report shows 3% of the nation’s corn crop was in the ground, as of the week ending April 14, up 1% from the previous week, dead even with a year ago, but 2% behind the ve year average. The report also shows 7% of the cotton crop has been planted, up 1% from the previous week, 1% behind a year ago and mirrors the ve year average.

The Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) program made its rst export sale of one of the new products recently added to its eligibility mix. A member captured 10 contracts to sell 1.254 million pounds of cream cheese with CWT assistance.

Other members accepted 6 offers of export assistance from CWT to help capture sales of 335,103 pounds of Cheddar and Gouda cheese and 209,439 pounds of whole milk powder. These products will go to customers in Asia, the Middle East, and South America and will be delivered through September 2019.

The latest sales put CWT’s 2019 exports at 26.0 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 3.47 million pounds of butter (82% milkfat), 1.25 million pounds of cream cheese, and 22.6 million pounds of whole milk powder to 22 countries.

In politics, the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) has endorsed the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed changes to the Waters of the U.S. rule, a proposal, NMPF says, “is meant to provide clarity and certainty about the waterways subject to regulation under the federal Clean Water Act.” The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) hailed a new report by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) that assesses the likely impact of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on the U.S. economy and industry sectors.

“The ITC report estimates that USMCA would raise U.S. GDP by $68.2 billion, pumping an additional $2.2 billion or 1.1 percent into the U.S. economy through increases in agricultural and food exports,” according to the IDFA, and “The ITC expects exports of U.S. dairy products to increase by more than $277 million overall, rising $227.0 million to Canada and $50.6 million to Mexico, respectively.”

Dairy prices have been in a firming uptrend since late February. Much of this improving pricing environment is being driven by a rapid late season slowdown in New Zealand milk production due to dry conditions. This is allowing Global Dairy Trade auction prices to move higher, impacting world values. Class III futures are now trading over $16/cwt in the July 2019 to December 2020 contracts.

GDT cheddar values posted a low of $1.44/lb. in the December 4, 2018 auction and have now rebounded to $1.96. NZ cheddar is the highest priced cheese of the three major exporters, with EU and U.S. cheddar trading in the upper 1.50’s to high 1.60’s. These type of cheddar cheese values for NZ will stimulate expanding production if weather situations cooperate for their next production cycle.

Whey prices continue to be weighed down by the spreading African Swine Fever in China and SE Asia. China’s sow herd is said to be down 20 plus percent from its recent peak due to the disease. With whey being a big ingredient in starter pig diets this is having a significant impact on whey demand for that region. China typically buys roughly 45% of U.S. whey export volumes. In February China bought 25% of

U.S. exports with total U.S. whey export volume down 25%.

The block/barrel spread volatility continues as barrels went from trading a normal 3 cent discount to blocks in late March to a recent settlement of 15 cent discount. This is a good representation of the challenges dairy industry faces in balancing the various milk product inventories as world demand is allowed to function more freely. It is highly likely that various milk product categories will win while others see less benefits from regional world demand shifts.

Grain prices have seen steady price declines as the reality of big inventories impacts the market. Even if the China tariff situation is resolved, it is highly unlikely that it will have a significant impact on the extremely large old crop soybean situation. For producers with old crop grain to sell, a delayed planting season may be their only hope for a selling rebound.

Kvareli Baga: A leader in craved milk industry

Dairy farm largest producer of milk in the country of Georgia

TSITSKANAANTSERI, Kvareli, Kakheti, Georgia – A dairy farm that started with 132 Holstein Friesian cows in 2013 has since blossomed into Georgia’s largest producer of milk. And as such, the farm, Kvareli Baga, is supplying milk for a diverse and longstanding tradition of cheese making and dairy consumption in the country.

Kvareli Baga is a 1,700cow dairy farm where 900 cows are milked in a double-29 parallel milking parlor.

The farm is located in the Tsitskanaantseri village of the Kvareli municipality in the Kakheti region of Georgia. The region is located in the Alazani Valley near the foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains and is known for its wine making.

Georgia is a country located at the intersection of Europe and Asia near Turkey. The area receives, on average, 27 inches of annual precipitation and has a temperate climate with an average temperature of 55 degrees.

pass their households through the generations,” Natia Gargulia said. “The reason of this is low productivity of local breed cows and high cost of keeping farm. Though, past 5-8 years tendency showed that local farmers are closing their farms or replacing local breed cows with high productivity breed imported cows.”

Gargulia is the executive director of Kvareli Baga.

The farm employs 45 fulltime employees and seasonal eld workers, all of which are local residents. In addition to the dairy, the farm owns 990 acres of land where they pro-

duce corn, wheat and alfalfa.

The Holstein Friesian cows are milked three times a day in the semi-automatic parlor equipped through Amilk, a milking automation company in Israeli. Gargulia said the herd is averaging 25 tons, or 50,000 pounds, of milk per day.

The farm focuses on commercial milk production.

“The (milk) price differs according to the quality and the supplier,” Gargulia said.

“Local farmer’s milk price is about $.30 in summertime to $.60 in the winter. As to the industrial milk price, it’s mainly

xed during the season and makes up about $.50-$.57.”

The milk is sold daily according to prior contract conditions, Gargulia said.

“The milk is been bought by the main processing dairy companies and is used to produce different types of dairy products,” she said.

The cows are housed in freestall barns bedded with compost and have access to shaded lots. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were the ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst to have built a freestall compost-style farm in Georgia,â&#x20AC;? Gargulia said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although many local experts predicted that cows will not survive in these conditions, the time has proven that we have fewer hoof problems, less mastitis and in general fewer health problems with cows. Because, the main advantage of his farm is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focused on cow comfort, ensuring for them free space, temperature and soft ď&#x192;&#x;ooring.â&#x20AC;?

Gargulia said there are several small and mid-size farms in the area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But, still they differ from Kvareli Baga farm in size, in equipment, in service, in quality requirements and many other aspects,â&#x20AC;? she said.

In Georgia, the average herd size of a family farm is two to three cows.

Larger farms are comprised of 100 cows up to 1,500 cows.

Gargulia said there are equipment and manufacturing companies in the area such as DeLaval, Aď&#x192;&#x17E;milk, Claas, John Deere and New Holland Agriculture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The service of the broken equipment is not performed as smoothly as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s preferred to be because of lack of

the qualiď&#x192;&#x17E;cation, difď&#x192;&#x17E;culty of making proper diagnoses,â&#x20AC;? Gargulia said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The same problem is with veterinary service. As the industry is still very young, there has been no need of having qualiď&#x192;&#x17E;ed doctors at the farm before, and therefore there was no demand on studying the subject.â&#x20AC;?

Looking ahead, Gargulia said the farm plans to build a processing plant near the farm to supply the market with dairy products.

With a demand for milk, Gargulia said the dairy industry in Georgia is not without its challenges. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The main concern is lack of infrastructure, lack of support from the government, deď&#x192;&#x17E;cit of qualiď&#x192;&#x17E;cation, limited suppliers of goods and services,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Despite that, the industry is very young. An aspiration to improving, develop and follow the international standards is very strong.â&#x20AC;?

A day in the life of Woodworth Brothers’ Farm

The end of 165 years of continuous dairy farming

CATARACT, Wis. – Most of the time, no two days on a dairy farm are ever the same. That was the case for the Woodworth brothers – Tim, Tony and Tom – April 9 when

165 years of continuous dairy farming came to an end on their farm in northern Monroe County near Cataract, Wis. Tim and Tony worked together to milk the cows for the last time, much like they had every morning and every evening for most of their lives.

The brothers’ long term plan was to sell the cows once that milestone was reached as there were no younger members of the family interested in continuing the farm.

“I’m 65, Tom’s 66 and Tony’s 67,” Tim said. “It’s kind of time to be done, especially the way the economy is right now.”

The downsizing has been happening slowly in preparation for their retirement.

At the peak of their herd size, the Woodworths milked about 150 head. Last fall, they sold 41 milking cows to the Knoll family near Melrose, Wis. The last 39 milk cows headed to their new home at the Luchterhand family farm near Alma Center, Wis. Six-

teen springing heifers and nine yearlings would also be calling Luchterhand’s farm home by the end of the day.

“I’m glad I could nd a home for all of them,” Tim said. “Some people are taking them to slaughter, but I couldn’t do that. There are too many good, productive cows in the herd.”

After the morning milking, the cows went to the feed bunks and freestall barns to spend their nal morning on the Woodworth’s farm before the rst trailer arrived to take them to their new home.

the rst group was sorted and run through the parlor to be loaded on the trailer.

As he watched the rst trailers leave, Tony recalled the changes the farm had seen over the course of his lifetime and compared to how his greatgreat grandfather may have dairy farmed on the same land.

“Our dad started with just a small herd in a stanchion barn, and then slowly added onto the barns and the herd,” Tony said.

It took three trips with two trailers to get all the cows and bred heifers to their new home.

The day was not without its troubles as Tim dealt with a at tire on his trailer with the rst load. Lee Follendorf, neighbor, stepped in and used his trailer to help facilitate the move.

cows and bred heifers left, the Woodworths kept 20 bred and eight open heifers and some calves to raise. Those animals will sell in November. The brothers plan to put their farm up for sale next spring.

As part of their sale and transition plans, the Woodworths had been breeding their heifers to sexed Holstein semen and the cows to Angus because of the added value for Angus-cross calves.

“The calf market is really good right now; it’s really come up,” Tim said. “Black calves are going for about $3 a pound, and the Holstein bull calves are anywhere from $1 to $1.30. It’s a lot better than

Tim plans to pursue his hobby of enjoying country music and hosting dances in the area with long time friend Linda Frederick. The two have also purchased a lake home in northern Wisconsin on Lake St. Germaine to enjoy during retirement.

Tony’s plans for retirement include gardening. He has purchased 100 strawberry plants to plant this year.

“I had a garden out here for years,” Tony said. “I’m not sure what I’ll do with the strawberries. I have to see if I can get them to grow rst.”

Tom, who has mostly been involved in the crop work for the last

several years, has plans to slow down, relax and enjoy life.

The end of the three brothers’ dairy farming careers was a bittersweet end for all.

Despite the sadness of seeing a family tradition come to an end, there is joy to be experienced in the future by all three as they take the time to enjoy activities that have taken a back seat to the needs of the cows.

All in all, though, the brothers said it has been a good lifestyle for ve generations of Woodworth men, teaching them the value of perseverance and hard work.

Plenary topics include dairy digital trends in the industry presented by international consultant Aidan Connolly, large scale robotic milking presented by Indiana dairy producer Brian Houin (36 box robots), data ownership and use of technology presented by Dutch dairy producer Ron von Burgsteden, technology and dairy cow health monitoring presented by Dave Kelton, and ag venture capital perspective presented by international technology consultant Kieran Furlong.

Most of the 20-min breakout talks on June 18 will focus on sensor technology and use of data. On June 19 there will be 9 breakout talks on robotic milking, including one about the largest robotic dairy in the world (Chile) milking 4,500 cows with 64 box robots. Other topics on June 19 include ï&#x192;&#x17E;eld robotics beyond dairy, practical use of inline milk data, automated calf feeding and mastitis detection. Dairy Days Cattle Show will be Thursday, June 27 at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds in Brainerd.

The Great River Graziers and Kickapoo Grazing Initiative is hosting a pasture walk on the farm owned by Claudia Berres, June 11 at 10:30 a.m. near Richland Center, Wis. Berres is a contract beef grazer and will be looking at water systems, solar pump and water storage systems.

On June 25, a pasture walk will be at 10:30 a.m. at the farm owned by Don Boland, 18732 Gays Mills, Wis. Topics of discussion include managing paddocks, grass species and sizing paddocks. Nick Baker, UW Extension, will be speaking about Meadow Fescue and other perennial forage species.

Pistachio torte 50 Ritz crackers, crushed 1/2 cup butter 2 - 3.5 oz. pistachio instant pudding 10 1/2 cups milk

4 cups vanilla ice cream 1 carton cream

Crush Ritz crackers. Melt butter and mix together. Put on bottom of 9x13 pan and bake for 10 minutes. Blend two packages pistachio pudding, 10 1/2 cups milk until thick. Add 4 cups of vanilla ice cream and blend. Pour over crust. Whip 1 carton of cream and pour over pudding and ice cream mixture.

Refrigerate.

Preheat broiler. Combine tuna, celery, onion and salad dressing. Season with salt and pepper. Toast the English muffin halves. Place split-side-up on baking sheet and top each with Âź of tuna mixture. Broil 2-3 minutes or until heated through. Top with cheese and return to broiler until cheese is melted, about 1 minute longer.

For dressing: Place 1 cup of yogurt, basil, parsley, chives, lemon juice, honey and pepper in a blender or food processor. Cover and pulse until smooth (dressing will be green in color). Pour yogurt mixture into a medium bowl; stir in remaining yogurt and mayonnaise until just blended; refrigerate until ready to serve.

For salad: Place lettuce at the bottom of a bowl and sprinkle the tomatoes, onion, cucumber, turkey, bacon bits, egg and Colby cheese on top. Just before serving, pour dressing over salad and toss lightly.

Pulled pork soft tacos For pulled pork: 2 lbs. boneless pork loin roast 2 Tbsp. brown sugar 1 Tbsp. ground ginger 2 cloves garlic smashed 1 white onion small, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup orange juice 2 limes cut in half

For tacos: 12 soft corn tortillas 6-inch 1 1/2 cups shredded reduced-fat Colby Jack 1/2 cup non-fat sour cream 1 tsp. cumin 2 scallions trimmed and chopped 1 8 oz. bag shredded red cabbage 3/4 cup fresh salsa

For pulled pork: Trim excess fat off roast. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and ginger; rub generously over roast. Place in slow cooker with garlic, onion and orange juice; cook on low heat for 8 hours (or high for 4 -6 hours.) Remove pork to large bowl and shred with forks. Strain pork liquid from slow cooker and pour over pulled pork to moisten. Squeeze lime juice on top and mix well. Divide into 12 servings.

For tacos: In small bowl, mix together sour cream, cumin and scallions. For each serving, cover corn tortilla with 2 tbsp. cheese; microwave for 20 seconds. Top with pulled pork, 2 tsp. of sour cream mix, 11/2 tbsp. shredded cabbage and 1 tbsp. of salsa. Fold and serve immediately.
