Returning to his roots Lang resurrects family farm after 40-year absence of cows

WINSLOW, Ill. – After a childhood spent growing up working on beef farms in Ohio, Adam Lang knew he wanted to return to his roots, bringing life back to his grandparents’ vacant Illinois dairy farm.

The journey started in 2005 when Lang made the move northwest and began crop farming and raising beef on the old family farm.

“I always knew I wanted to milk cows eventually,” Lang said. “It was just something that seemed to be in my blood. I remember visiting my uncle who dairy farmed; he started here on my grandparents’ farm before moving to a farm up the road in the late 1970s. I always really looked up to him and enjoyed visiting.”

Lang is the fourth generation of his family to milk cows on that farm and is proud of the farm’s unique history within his family. His great-grandfather was an orphan, living on the streets of Pittsburgh. He was placed on an orphan train by a preacher and sent westward, ending up working for the childless couple who owned the farm. Eventually, he purchased the farm from the couple with the stipulation they would continue to live there.

In 2014, after nearly a 40-year absence, dairy cows nally made their long-awaited return to the barn.

Lang milks 35 cows, mostly Holsteins with a variety of colored breeds mixed in. He also runs a small beef herd. Lang crop farms about 150 acres, all of which

“I had a couple of milk checks that were for $28 milk,” Lang said of his entry into the dairy industry. “But the last six years pretty much took care of all of that.”

The barn was gutted as his uncle had used the property to raise hogs and store machinery. Lang brought new life to the structure, returning it to its usefulness as a dairy barn.

Once the barn was ready for cows, Lang learned the business of dairy farming. Without prior dairy experi-

ence, Lang found that every day was a learning day in the beginning.

“I knew how to milk cows, but at rst I needed advice and help with just about every aspect of herd health,” Lang said. “I was fortunate to have good neighbors that helped as needed and taught me so much in those rst months.”

Lang quickly learned what he could handle on his own and what types of instances might require a veterinarian.

During that time period, Lang worked to cultivate a good working relationship with the local veterinary staff.

“I am fortunate to know that if I have an emergency, I know I have an on-call vet that will come,” Lang said. “Back in Ohio, at the beef farm I worked at, we didn’t have that luxury.”

That close working relationship paid off for Lang in 2019 when he faced his greatest challenge as a dairyman.

“Something awful went through the herd,” Lang said. “I lost 10 to 15 cows that year. My vets were completely perplexed; they couldn’t gure out what was wrong. We did bloodwork on the ones that were sick; necropsies on the ones that died and sent in samples. I tested all of my feed but found no issues or mycotoxins. We never did gure out the problem. It just eventually stopped.”

That year shook Lang’s condence, but he persevered nevertheless.

“When you lose that many cows in a herd this size, that really devastates you,” Lang said. “I was down on cow numbers, but I just waited for the heifers to calve in to replace them. I didn’t want to risk bringing anything in to the herd after what had just gone on.”

Lang said one of his greatest strengths is also one of his greatest weaknesses when it comes to caring for his herd.

“I have a tendency to not be willing to give up on an animal,” he said. “I think I can save everything. It makes me a good cowman but probably makes me a terrible businessman.”

Lang has made adjustments to his management practices to keep himself

viable despite the low milk prices and other struggles he faced. Lang began his dairy career feeding his cows a total mixed ration but has since switched to component feeding.

“It is easier, feeding that way in my situation,” Lang said. “When milk was really low, I began to wonder how much fuel I was wasting.”

Lang uses a mix of articial insemination and the use of a herd bull to breed his cows, and breeds his entire herd using dairy semen.

Lang prides himself on the longevity of his cows, noting that the average age of the herd is creeping up toward 10 years of age.

“I really like working with the animals and learning and watching all of their different personalities,” Lang said.

“I love watching how they respond to the feed, and watching their offspring grow and become the next generation of milking cows in the herd is rewarding.”

Last spring when we were chopping rye and we needed corn planted, Adam was able to jump right in the tractor and plant without even being shown. Adam learns a lot by watching.

What qualities does Adam have that benet the farm? Adam has the ability to x almost anything and is always helping where he can on the farm.

Youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I spend the majority of my time on the farm doing service and repair on equipment. I run equipment such as the corn planter in spring, and I run one of the mergers when we chop hay. I am also in charge of servicing the feeding equipment.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I was in the barn helping my dad for as long as I can remember. As I grew older, I started learning to work on and run equipment. From there, I found my niche with equipment and fell in love with machinery.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I was in a program at school where I would receive school credit for the hours I put in at the farm. I was an FFA member throughout high school and some of middle school. I was also a crosscountry athlete all four years of high school.

What do you love most about farm life? I love running equipment on the farm. I also have a passion for working on the equipment because of how fun it is to know the anatomy of equipment that you run.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working on the farm has shaped my character by making me a hard worker both on and off the farm.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents/employer? The No. 1 thing I have learned is how to work fast and efcient.

What are your future plans? I plan to stay working on the farm because it’s what I like to do.

Julia Stich 15 years old Tenth grade When do you do chores? Around 5 p.m. each day I go to our old dairy barn and feed the cattle their grain.

What is your favorite chore and lease favorite chore? I like driving tractor and box during harvest time because I have time to talk to myself, listen to the radio, say the Rosary or think over book ideas I might have. I don’t like when I have to help with milkings at our main farm, so I’m glad I don’t do that often. I also despise cooking meals, though baking sweets or making breakfast isn’t so bad.

What is your favorite animal on your farm? I like sheep and lambs, but we don’t have any of those on our farm.

What is your favorite subject in school? I like learning theology, but biology has also been enjoyable this year.

What is something you have learned in school recently? In biology, I have been learning about plants, their anatomy, their reproduction and different classications of plants.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would like one of those old looking farmhouses with a big landscape for gardens and animal pens. Being near a woods and brook would be nice. Somewhere peaceful and quiet so I can write books or spend time with God. What is your favorite dairy treat? I love having milk at every single meal of the day, but ice cream is by far the best dairy treat. Especially if it has chocolate, caramel, cookie or mint in it.

What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I enjoy going outside and doing random, fun things with my siblings, whether that be exploring, making up stories or doing crazy things.

Are you involved in any activities? I’m not in too many activities, but I did participate in a play last year. I’m part of a book club, and I take part in different events and activities at the Catholic church, such as Schoenstatt, helping with Mass, religious education classes, vacation bible school, etc.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I’m fairly certain God is calling me to be a religious nun, and I would also like to be a writer and author.

Luke Stich 13 years old Seventh grade When do you do chores? I do my chores any time of day, but mostly in the afternoon.

What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding the chickens and the dog. My least favorite chore is milking.

The Broges have purchased bulls from the AL Lynns (David Allen) herd for the past 17 years. This dairy herd has not been pushed.

The focus of this herd has been components. Many high producing ladies. Cows are use to loose housing and turned out daily on a large dry lot for exercise. The Broge Family are proud of the fact that their milk has been chosen and used for local champion cheese.
