With the arrival of warmer weather, the kids and I have nally been spending some time outdoors. While Tate and Lily splash their way through puddle after puddle, I’ve been soaking up as much sun as I can, trying to rell my depleted Vitamin D reserves. Wandering among our shrinking snow piles and surveying winter’s aftermath, I had a sudden realization. Dairy in the Suburbs There is a great children’s book by Minnesota author Betsy Bowen called, Antler, Bear, Canoe: A Northwoods Alphabet Year. It is a typical alphabet book (A is for antler; B is for bear), but it also follows the year and the seasons. So, A and B are in January, C and D are in February, By Susan Steinke etc. By the time you Columnist come to J in the book, it is May. In Betsy Bowen’s alphabet, J is for junk, because in May, as the snow melts, all the junk shows up. Sometimes you nd treasures you had forgotten about, but you also nd, well, junk. When I read the story, I wrinkled my nose at associating junk with Minnesota’s beautiful northwoods. However, after discovering our own version of junk emerging from the snow at the end of March, I think I’ve come to a new understanding as to why Betsy Bowen chose junk for J. Some of the junk that emerges is like a snapshot of what we were doing ve months ago. For example, Tate must have forgotten to put away his toy tractors last fall before the rst snow storm. The tractors he was playing with were still on the bank next to his little shed. There’s a pile of leaves reappearing that I raked up in the front yard. I was pregnant with Gemma and ran out of steam before I had a chance to load them in the manure spreader. There’s also a row of cornstalks still standing in my garden. I never got around to tilling it (pregnancy and tilling don’t mix), and Kurt was too busy with the late harvest to do it for me. I guess I need to start making my spring to-do list. Other junk re-emerging is a testament to the struggle of getting through this long winter. Behind our house, our yellowed Christmas tree still sits in the spot where it landed after being tossed out the back door. I couldn’t pull the tree to the brush pile because the snow was over knee-deep in the yard. The cats’ water dish nally resurfaced from the snow. I threw away three plastic containers from near our front steps that I had used as substitutes at various points throughout the winter. Next to the garage, long pieces of wood stick out haphazardly from one of our remaining snow mountains. I recall that there were pieces of wood siding laying there from when we re-roofed the garage. Kurt must have caught them with the skid loader when he was plowing. A red hose snakes out of a window from the hydrant in the old farm building that serves as Kurt’s shop and goes to the door of the calf nursery. Sometime during the winter the hydrant next to the nursery that we use to water the calves froze up in the subzero temps. The hose reminds me of the six cold weeks I spent inside with Tate and Gemma. Our recycling bin is still under a tree next to the driveway. It’s not junk in itself, but it is supposed to sit next to the sliding glass door on our screened-in porch. We had so much snow this winter that we haven’t been able to drag it up there for months. Not everything that emerges from the snow is junk. Lily found a treasure: a pile of brick chunks she had collected at the base of a tree by the porch (treasure in her eyes, anyway). I understand now why J is for junk is perfect for the end of winter. The junk reminds you of your victories in the long, hard battle with the snow and cold. The treasures remind you that there were happy outdoor times before the snow fell, and there will be happy outdoor times again. Susan and her husband, Kurt, milk 40 cows in Greeneld, Minn. This year we will plant 700 acres of corn, 400 acres of soybeans, 220 acres of alfalfa and the rest is pasture. The snow is gone but the frost is out just a very few inches and the fields are greasy. CENTRAL MINNESOTA We plant 125 acres of corn and 95 acres of alfalfa. We do some corn silage and earlage. The earlage makes pretty good feed. We don’t have enough land to try anything else. We have no possibility of hauling manure, the ground is still dark. I think it will take a rain to get the frost out. We have fairly heavy loam, clay soil that holds the moisture pretty well. Right now we’re sitting good with moisture.

I own 160 acres and I work with my dad helping him plant his 650 acres. I do 60 acres of flax. We sell the seed and the straw. We also do 40 acres of corn, some of which is used for a corn maze. We also plant some oats that is harvested as grain. My dad does some wheat and some soybeans. We still have on average a foot of snow on the ground. We still have some corn to harvest and will combine it once the snow drops below the cob. We took a moisture sample and it was 23.6 percent.

SOUTH CENTRAL MINNESOTA On our farm we plan to plant 175 acres of corn and 90 acres of alfalfa and soybeans. We have no snow cover except where we piled it. We received 2 inches of snow last Friday (April 4). Our field conditions are really wet. I would love to haul manure but I don’t know if we will get a wheel in the field this week. This year we plan to plant 350 acres of corn, 200 acres of soybeans, 100 acres of alfalfa, 30 acres of triticale underseeded with alfalfa and 50 acres of peas. We plant one of the later pea varieties around Memorial weekend and pick them in the end of July. Then we haul some manure and plant alfalfa. We’ve been doing peas for the past 8-10 years. My mom and dad own the cropland but I help in the fields and my wife and I own the cattle and my dad mixes feed for me. Most of the snow is gone in our area, but the fields are pretty mucky. The earliest we could get in the fields would be in 10 days.

We plan to plant 85 acres of corn, 53 acres of oats underseeded with alfalfa and some is underseeded with alfalfa and clover. The rest is hay ground. We’ve got quite a bit of snow on the ground in the northern part of Clark County but in the southern part of the county the fields are bare. Last Friday, April 4, we had 4-5 inches of snow. I don’t think we had much frost because we had snow in early November. The frost didn’t set in that deep.

NORTHWESTERN WISCONSIN We plant 130 acres of corn, 35 acres of oats that is underseeded with alfalfa. We will take the oats as a forage and use for heifer feed. We also plant 105 acres of alfalfa. We had 8-10 inches of snow April 3 and the ground is still covered with snow. It’s been quite a winter in Barron County. Seventy buildings, from sheds to freestall barns, have collapsed. We shoveled snow off our barns. Keep safety in mind this spring; it’s going to be hectic. Safety is number one.

We plan to plant 120 acres of corn, soybeans, rye and alfalfa. The fields are pretty much clear, there is some snow in the ditches. We had ¼ inch of rain last Thursday and then we had a dusting of snow on Friday. The field conditions are pretty wet but are coming along fast with the warmer temperatures and wind. Someone in the area saw an CHUCK Amish farmer plowing with 5 horses BUSHMAN and a 2-bottom plow near Oelwein. It Castalia, IA (Fayette Co.) will probably be 10 days before we get 80 cows, 750 acres in the field.

We plan to plant 200 acres of corn, 85 acres of soybeans, 26 acres of new seeding oats underseeded with alfalfa and the rest is existing alfalfa fields. We got rain on Thursday and 6 inches of snow on the ground on Friday morning. The fields are pretty bare of snow. Right now we are sitting pretty RON KANNEL good with moisture, the snow melted Elmwood, WI slow so it soaked up pretty good. Right (Pierce Co.) now I’m hoping to get in the field by 60 cows, 400 acres April 25. We have heavy clay soil here.

WESTERN IOWA

SOUTHWESTERN WISCONSIN

We plan to plant 880 acres of corn and 120 acres of alfalfa. This will be the first time in five years we’ve planted alfalfa. We direct seed it. The snow is gone and we had ½ inch to ¾ inch of rain last Thursday and Friday that dampened up the fields. I’m guessing we’ll get into the fields next week if it stays dry. There is still some frost in the field, we haven’t had much moisture or heat. We are dry.

We plan to plant 90 acres of corn, 60 acres of alfalfa, 40 acres of soybeans, 20 acres of new seeded alfalfa with a grass blend and 10 acres of winter wheat. It’s still too wet to haul manure, we could use a good rain to wake everything up. The boys saw earthworms today when they were kicking in the field. I’m getting anxious to get fertilizer on my winter wheat. I’m hoping to possibly do that next week. We’re anxious and waiting for spring.

The Last Word Ice cream and milk giveaway at CPDE

According to Rod Muilenbuerg of AMPI, Milbank, S.D., they handed out 67 boxes of ice cream sandwiches during the two-day Central Plains Dairy Expo March 26-27 in Sioux Falls. Each box contains 24 sandwiches for a total of 1,608 sandwiches. Dean Foods gave away 1,200 ice cream cones, 600 Grip n’ Go containers of milk and 400 half pints in paper cartons during the Central Plains Dairy Expo. Jarrod Otta, plant manager of Dean Foods in Le Mars, Iowa said they really enjoy the interaction at the CPDE. “We get to see the farmers we do business with and obviously try to get new business. It’s a way to say ‘thank you’ from the processor. We’ve been involved with donating ice cream and milk every year they’ve had the show. We also like to see other people in the industry that we know. It’s a good way to network,” Otta said.

Top cow brings $5,000 at Brown Swiss Sale

The top cow went for $5,000 at the 67th Springtime Brown Swiss Sale which was April 5 in Elkhorn, Wis. According to sale manager Norman Magnussen the sale went well. “We got along real good but I thought they could have brought more. We are in an odd situation right now because people don’t know what cows are worth. With cull cows bringing $1.08 a pound we are used to $800 for a slaughter cow. Well, now the cow is bringing $1,800 so people are still trying to gure out what cows are worth.” Magnussen said the 67 head, which includes cows, heifers and calves, averaged $2,820. Buyers came from as far away as Massachusetts and New York.

Calf is sold for $18,000 at Midwest Jersey Sale

The Midwest Jersey Spring Special had a terric sale March 29 at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds. The top buy was a calf that was a pick out of a Vivid cow that sold for $18,000. The 81 lots of cows, heifers, calves and embryo packages averaged $3,800 according to sales manager, Greg Nelson.

Merritt sale averages $1,785

Jeff and Mary Merritt of Menomonie, Wis., retired from dairy farming with a sale on April 2. The Merritts, who had registered animals, averaged $1,785 on 214 lots. The top cow brought $3,200 in their complete dispersal. They sold cows, heifers and calves on the sale. The last word is compiled by Mark Klaphake and Krista Kuzma. On the lighter side A cow on the run

“We ushed a high genetic cow on our farm, so we bought a few beef heifers and put the embryos in them because we did not have any other dairy heifers in heat. The day we brought home the beef cow (with an embryo already in her), she cleared the fence at home, ran across the highway and jumped over the neighbor’s ve-foot high-tensile fence. We searched with a large team of people on foot, 4-wheelers and other vehicles for several hours Ryan Kappers into the night, but could not nd her. We continued to search, but could never nd her. Over the next couple months, we would get calls from people in the area saying they had seen her in a ditch or a eld, sometimes up to ve miles away. Each time we tried to get her home, she bolted away. On Nov. 1, a neighbor was combining the last two acres of his corn. He called us because he knew she was in the corn. We called a local trapper, who had a tranquilizer. Since she was unruly, we wanted to get the cow home safely without any accidents. We nally got her, had her pregnancy checked at the vet clinic (still pregnant) and brought her home. We put her in a pen sheeted with metal to the ceiling so she wouldn’t jump over any fences. By the end of the winter she calmed down a bit and let us pet her head through the fence. On March 1, we did a C-section and then sold the beef cow. With her past, we did not want to take the chance of putting people’s safety in jeopardy. It was a long process, but it was a relief when we got a red and white Holstein heifer calf at the end of it. We named the calf Ranger after the local trapper who helped us get the beef cow home.” Ryan Kappers Spring Valley, Minn. 50 cows
