A farm rooted in family

Schouvillers incorporate fourth generation on dairy

CALLAWAY, Minn. – From sunup to sundown, the Schouvillers work together. It was how John and his brother, Mike, grew up, and how the brothers raised their children. Now grown, the Schouviller cousins have made dairy farming a part of their livelihood.

“When you say family farm, that’s all of us,” John said.

John and Linda, and their son, Matt, 23, dairy farm with John’s brother, Mike, his wife, Lois, and their children – Adam, 18, Nick, 19, and Betty, 22 – at Schouviller Dairy in Becker County near Callaway.

The Schouviller families begin their day in the dairy barn.

As John, Louise, Adam, Nick and Betty milk the 150-cow herd in their single-17 parlor, Matt cleans the freestall barn and beds the stalls, and Mike mixes feed for the day.

“When I get to the barn, then Adam goes out and helps his dad,” John said. “Then, once the units are all on, Nick and Betty feed calves in between milking groups.”

The brothers began welcoming their children home in 2017.

Matt was the rst of his cousins to work full time on the family farm.

“It’s a good feeling when you know somebody is interested in taking over.”

He was previously working in the carpentry industry when he returned in the fall for silage harvest and chose to stay.

“I wanted to stay on,” Matt said. “I like it, the diversity and the mechanics of it.”

Linda agreed.

“It was a good feeling when Matt wanted to start farming with us,” she said. “Things are a lot better and go

faster with the kids home.”

Matt’s cousins soon joined him on the dairy.

Betty returned to the farm after receiving her associate degree in dairy management at Ridgewater College in Willmar. She oversees the family’s youngstock and does all the breeding work.

“I went to school to get away and see what I wanted to do,” Betty said.

Her younger brothers both knew farming was their calling in high school.

“I’ve always thought it was cool to

farm,” Adam said. “Everything we do is pretty cool. Not everybody sees us in the world. … I was the only one in my grade who milked cows.”

At 16 years old, Adam purchased his rst milking cows and has grown his herd within the families’ herd.

The Schouviller cousins all own some cattle within the milking herd which allows them to receive a portion of the dairy’s milk check.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For many dairies, tube feeding a newborn calf is a daily chore. Even so, experience has told Andy Beckel, of the Golden Calf Company, it is not always done exactly right.

Beckel, who founded the company, gave recommendations about proper practices for tube feeding during a breakout at the Central Plains Dairy Expo March 24 in Sioux Falls. He used models of a calf’s anatomy to help explain common mistakes and demonstrate ways to improve tube feeding and calf handling on the farm.

Among the challenges he identied were using the tube feeder to give milk to older calves, using damaged tube feeders which can injure the calf, releasing colostrum too close to the esophageal groove and doing the job too quickly.

Beckel’s demonstration model showed how the calf’s tongue has a slight ridge at the back a little left of center. Finding it helps assure the tube is inserted into the esophagus rather than the trachea.

“It’s a really great spot to remember, because tubing through that spot will get the calf to swallow for you,” he said.

Beckel said keeping the nose at or below the ears and not letting the calf stretch its neck upward will help in nding that ridge. That is because elongating the neck will atten the

He also advised taking as much time as needed to accomplish the job, because the esophagus is a collapsed muscle and easily injured. He recommended palpating near the jugular to determine whether the tube is in the correct pathway.

“If you can’t feel the tip, start over,” he said.

“Thirty seconds is not that long to offer the tube to the calf. Passing it through quickly makes you susceptible to damaging the collapsed esophagus and incorrectly placing it in the windpipe.”

Beckel said both stainless steel and plastic tube feeders are acceptable to use, but few in the audience said they use a plastic tube only once before throwing it away. He pointed out how burrs on either kind of tube can damage the calf’s digestive tract, but a stainless steel tube can be smoothed out with steel wool or emery cloth while plastic cannot. Beckel recommended using a plastic tube feeder that snaps into the bag because it cannot be reused.

“Calves don’t hurt themselves; we hurt calves if we tube improperly,” he said. “The only calf that gets the best benet (of a plastic tube) is the rst calf.”

He said scrapes and irritation from damaged tube feeders are often the reason calves refuse a full meal later.

“The calf still wants to drink, and it sucks then stops,” he said. “The reason it stops is that it hurts.

Milk is naturally acidic. So, we must be careful not to feed it again with a damaged tube feeder otherwise we are only making the situation worse.”

Beckel demonstrated how liquid fed through a properly placed tube feeder lls up a calf’s st-sized rumen before spilling over to the abomasum within three to ve minutes. He said many people pull their tube backward after insertion, trying to put the liquid over the esophageal groove. That is wrong, Beckel said, because of a high possibility of backow into the trachea.

“Ultimately, the deeper you go, the better off you’re going to be,” he said.

Beckel explained how the calf’s digestive system is sterile at birth, so feeding colostrum into the rumen in the rst two days is acceptable, but development of good bacteria begins immediately after that. When milk or colostrum is tube fed to address dehydration at more than 4 days of age, it may set the animal back.

“You’re disrupting the little bit of development that has happened in the rumen,” he said.

Instead, he urged dairy farmers to stick to electrolytes when tube feeding to address dehydration.

Beckel’s advice to dairy farmers also included having extra rubber gloves in a pocket when tubing, because a handler usually touches the calf or its surroundings before inserting the feeder.

Last, Beckel pointed out how to extract the tube feeder.

“Much like a straw in your drink, there may be a small amount of liquid trapped inside the tube feeder when you are done. To prevent it from entering the lungs, make sure to point the tube feeder toward the ground as you gently pull it out,” he said.

In the end, Beckel said the goal is to make tube feeding as practical as possible, so the dairy farmer and all employees do their job the same way day in and day out.

“Everything about farming … the chopping corn … it satises me,” Adam said.

One of Adam’s favorite days of the year is when the family makes baleage.

They cut the 170 acres with two haybines then start raking and baling to complete the task in one day.

“I help Grandpa get in the tractor and then help rake,” Nick said.

Adam cuts the crop, Nick and Betty rake, and Matt and John wrap.

“Everyone knows their jobs,” Linda said. “Then, we eat out on the back end of a tailgate.”

This spring will be the rst planting season where all cousins are involved full time, allowing for some to nish eldwork while others return to the barn for evening milking.

Whether in the barn or the eld, the Schouvillers can always be found alongside each other, and as the fourth generation takes on more responsibilities, it is a sight the older generation welcomes.

“We’re proud of these kids, our son, and our niece and nephews. They’re like our children too,” Linda said. “The families grew up close. It’s really a joy to see them all working together.”

Dairy market analyst sees lingering COVID-19 impacts Checkoff partners also weigh in on pandemic effects

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Over the past year, the dairy commodity markets were among the most volatile in the world, said Phil Plourd, of Blimling and Associates, during a Central Plains Dairy Expo breakout session in Sioux Falls.

“We have been moving at two times the historical norms,” he said. “That’s crazy town.”

Plourd, who has spent more than 20 years in dairy market analysis, research, forecasting and risk management, heads up Blimling and hosts the “Dairy Download” podcast. He told those in attendance that while we may have put a year of the coronavirus pandemic behind us, lingering impacts should be expected. Some will have long-term effects on dairy.

For example, he pointed out how the demand side of the equation was rocked in March 2020. At the time, nearly half of United States cheese consumption was away from home.

That portion came to a near standstill when restaurants shut down.

The takeout and delivery sector then grew rapidly, starting at 10% prepandemic and now standing closer to 40%. In-person dining, while open, has not yet come back to its normal level.

“It’s not going to come back,” Plourd said of the rate of in-person dining.

Jon Moss, senior vice president and chief brand ofcer of Pizza Ranch, had similar comments during a breakout presented by Midwest Dairy Association. The checkoff organization worked closely with the chain to help adjust to the pandemic’s limitations.

Moss said 80% of Pizza Ranch sales were dine-in until the pandemic hit.

“It forced us to try things we never would have,” he said.

That included improving e-commerce and online ordering as well as developing a frozen breakfast pizza. Midwest Dairy offered consumer insights to help with decisions in each area.

Moss cited statistics showing a 600% increase in customer use of thirdparty delivery businesses like UberEats and DoorDash. Like Plourd, he said those trends are here to stay.

“Our data show 30% of habits developed during the pandemic will stay the same going forward,” Moss said.

Plourd said the challenge within that trend is that dairy products will need to stand up under delivery conditions.

“In a world where pick-up and delivery are more and more important, what product development do we have to do?” he said.

Plourd said grocery stores have made changes well beyond solving the short-term supply problems of last spring. He said many have now adopted

During the Midwest Dairy breakout, Coborn’s dairy and frozen category manager, Andrew Burggraff, said problems sourcing products brought a new emphasis on local connections for the Minnesota-based grocery chain. He said that as consumers made fewer trips to stores, larger packages also became more important.

“And our partners say it takes eight weeks to make a trend sustainable in our stores,” Burggraff said.

Trends like those mean dairy organizations like cooperatives and checkoff need to ask themselves new questions, said Plourd.

Other impacts mentioned by Plourd included a downturn in the coffee business from more people working at home. Specialty coffees and teas use large volumes of milk.

Specialty cheeses, often sold through in-store demonstrations, could suffer from the trend toward online shopping.

And Plourd said school demand for dairy looks nothing like did before the pandemic.

Beyond that, Plourd reported dairy exports are currently challenged not because of demand, but because of shipping backups caused by a huge inux of imported goods coming to United States ports.

Looming beside the changes in demand is a United States milk supply that Plourd called “irting with the danger zone.”

He said the 2% increase in year-toyear February milk production signals a potential downside risk for farm prices.

Combined with that is an 81,000-head increase in cow numbers paired with increased milk per cow.

Plourd said milk component percentages are also up which could trigger plants to reconsider their incentives.

“Historically, when cow numbers and production are up, 12 months later we have lower Class III prices 68% of the time, by an average of 15%,” he said.

“When you have that kind of situation, don’t be overly optimistic about price. … We’re walking the ne line between enough milk and too much milk.”

Many healthy cows can forgo antibiotic treatment at dry-off and freshen with a low somatic cell count (SCC). This practice can help dairy producers save money. Plus, reducing antimicrobial use at dry-off helps promote judicious use of antibiotics.

How has working on the farm shaped your character?

Working on the farm has taught me hard work, determination and perseverance. Things must get done, and I have learned not to give up when I start a job. This has shaped me to be a stronger, more driven person than if I had not grown up on a farm.

As a family, we all do chores on the weekend together. Everyone has their own responsibility to make sure we maintain a protable herd. We are very proud of Brea on how well she has taken on managing morning herd health every weekend. She is hard working and dedicated to our dairy. Brea has a passion to work with cows and loves to be involved in the dairy industry.

What qualities does your son/daughter/employee have that benet the farm? Our farm benets in many ways from Brea. She has this natural ability to work with the cows.

She can diagnose and treat the cows. Brea has also caught on very quickly on how to operate the robots. She has not only learned to problem solve, but to do preventative maintenance as well. Brea has also taken

What do you love most about farm life? The thing I love most about living on the farm is there is always something to do. I am never bored. I also enjoy working with and showing dairy cattle at local, state and national levels.

Youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I put in many hours working on my family’s dairy farm during the weekend and after school. I help work with the lactation cows and our ve Lely robots, along with feeding calves and managing the cattle we take to shows.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I began helping on the farm at a very young age. My rst jobs on the farm were a hodgepodge of tasks. I would help my dad mix feed in the morning, then I would switch to milking cows in the parlor with my aunt, or I would help my grandma feed calves.

As I got older, I was given more responsibilities.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? Making sure I get all my chores done and still completing all my extra school work and activities can be tough at times. It sometimes requires me to get up earlier and stay up later studying. I am involved in FFA and am the chapter president. I am also part of National Honors Society, 4-H, 4-H Federation and soccer.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? I have learned how to be my own problem solver. If something is broken, I x it right away or if something needs to be cleaned up I, immediately clean it up.

What are your future plans?

After graduating from St. Charles High School, I plan to attend the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. I plan on majoring in biology and minoring in dairy science.

I would eventually like to continue to graduate school. I hope to pursue a career within the agriculture industry.

The University of Wisconsin Center for Agricultural Safety and Health announced the availability of $15,000 to award grants for farm safety and education, training, or informational programs. Grants will be awarded for amounts up to $500 per county with groups securing or providing equal matching funds.

“Programs receiving county farm safety grants provide a focus on the farm safety and health issues for youth and adults. These communitybased efforts target local needs and interests and work towards reducing the number of farm-related fatalities.”

The grants help counties sponsor programs focusing on farm safety and health prevention efforts. Priority will continue to be use with Wisconsin Safe Operation of Tractor and Machinery Certication Programs.

“Every year there is a new generation of youth ready to start working on their family farm or to be employed on a local farm,” Skjolaas said.

“The Wisconsin Safe Operation of Tractor and Machinery Certication provides these youth with a basic safety awareness on tractor and machinery operation, so the programs remain a priority.”
