Iowa Department of Ag, Land Stewardship to require testing of milk for aatoxin starting Aug. 31 Drought conditions can produce aatoxin in corn, which can be then be found in milk Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today announced that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship will require aatoxin screening and testing of milk received in Iowa beginning August 31, 2012 and continuing indenitely. The order announced today requires milk processors to screen all Grade A and Grade B farm bulk milk pickup tankers and farm can milk loads for aatoxin on a weekly basis. Aatoxin can sometimes be found in drought-stressed corn. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established action levels for aatoxin in milk and feed. “We were well aware that aatoxin could be an issue this year due to the historic drought conditions,” Northey said. “Now that farmers are starting to harvest silage, and corn in some cases, it is appropriate to begin this screening process to make sure our milk supply remains safe.” The Department is also instituting a state-wide corn sampling program. The FDA has established guidelines for acceptable aatoxin levels in corn based on its intended use. Corn containing aatoxin in concentrations of greater than 20 ppb cannot be used for human consumption and cannot be used for feed for dairy animals or for immature livestock of others species. Corn containing aatoxin at 100 ppb or less can be used in breeding cattle and swine and mature poultry. Corn with 200 ppb or less can be used with nishing swine greater than 100 lbs. in weight and corn with 300 ppb or less can be used in nishing beef cattle. On August 15, 2012 the Department submitted a request to FDA to allow corn containing more than 20 ppb of aatoxin to be blended with non-aatoxin containing corn for animal feed. The FDA has granted a similar request in previous years when aatoxin has been present in Iowa. In addition to networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities, attendees had the opportunity to participate in specialized, interactive short courses. Attendees could choose to attend four of 10 different short courses, including one taught in Spanish. “This was the rst year that we offered just short courses at our regional meeting,” says Dr. David Reid, NMC rst vice president and owner of Rocky Ridge
Dairy Consulting. “This change allowed individuals to select specic topics that were of interest to their individual business. It also provided for smaller group settings and the opportunity to interact directly with instructors.” “The change in conference setting from a large lecture room to a smaller more interactive classroom style was well-received by this year’s participants,” notes Reid. A diverse group of veterinarians, dairy farm managers and employees, industry and milk plant eld staff were in attendance. Attendees traveled from 22 states, Puerto Rico and four countries. CRP emergency grazing extended to November 30 for producers impacted by drought USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has announced an extension for the emergency grazing deadline on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres to November 30, 2012, on limited practices for producers in counties eligible for emergency grazing. The following practices are NOT eligible for the November 30, deadline extension: Grass Waterway-Noneasement (CP8A) Wetland Restoration (CP23) Wetland Restoration, Non-Floodplain (CP23A) Producers interested in emergency grazing must remove cattle no later than November 30, 2012 or when grass height limitations in conservation plan have been reached, whichever occurs rst. Emergency haying on CRP acres has not been extended and was required to be completed by August 31, 2012. Producers are reminded that they must report nal acreage hayed immediately. CRP participants who participated in the emergency grazing must report the number of acres actually grazed and the number of livestock grazed by November 30, 2012, and reports are subject to spot check by USDA. Save money by properly sealing your silage Look at the economics behind properly sealing silage. No matter if you’re talking about yourself or your animals – storing food properly is very important. Comparable to the use of Tupperware and plastic wrap that prevents mold and spoilage from ruining our leftovers, covering forage or grain at ensiling serves a very similar purpose. Selecting the right covering and properly sealing your silage has a signicant economic impact. Losses from unsealed or incorrectly sealed corn silage exceed a quarter billion dollars every year, says Keith Bolsen, professor emeritus at Kansas State University. “Farmers are losing money from spoiled silage, which has to be discarded, and from decreased nutritional value of the silage itself.” To combat these losses, Bolsen recommends producers look to an oxygen barrier lm when covering their silage. “Oxygen barrier lm is 60 times more effective at protecting silage from oxygen than standard plastic covers,” notes Bolsen. It is advised to look for the term “oxygen transmission rate” or OTR when selecting a covering material. Choose a product with a very low OTR number and ask for the test data that backs the number. “The lower the number, the less oxygen will get through,” explains Bolsen. It’s also advisable to consider using a two-layer system to cover ensiled forage or grain. The rst layer prevents oxygen from getting in and the second layer protects the oxygen barrier lm from damaging ultraviolet light. “With the price of feedstuffs today, producers can’t take a chance at leaving silage unprotected or using an inferior product. Oxygen barrier lm pays for itself every time,” says Bolsen.

Northeast Iowa Graziers pasture walks, Sept. 18 - Dec. 4 Producers seeking hands-on grazing management information in an informal atmosphere can attend one or more of the 2012 pasture-walk grazing eld events. These events are mostly farmer-to-farm discussion on their management experiences in rotational grazing. The Northeast Iowa Graziers plan monthly walks to help producers learn how better pasture management can result in both healthier prots and a healthier environment. In Her Boots Training supports Women Farmers in Sustainable Agriculture, Sept. 9 While the number of farms has been on the decline for many years, the number owned and operated by women is on the rise – up nearly 30 percent according to the last USDA Census of Agriculture. The Rural Women’s Project, a venture of the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES), supports these new women farmers through its In Her Boots: Sustainable Farming For Women, By Women, workshop. This day-long, on-farm workshop provides women farmers and food-focused business owners with an inspiring blend of practical information, skill-building, farm tours, resource connections and networking opportunities to encourage and support this growing segment of organic farmers, entrepreneurs and agricultural leaders. Workshops run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include lunch and a farm tour. The cost is $25 and scholarships are available. Each workshop is on a different woman-owned farm and covers different topics, so women are welcome to attend more than one. “These In Her Boots workshops are based on the idea that women learn best from each other in a format where we can ask questions and mentor and inspire one another,” explains Lisa Kivirist, director of the MOSES Rural Women’s Project. Farm progress Hay Expo heads to northeast Iowa The Farm Progress Hay Expo will head to northeast Iowa for the 2013 event scheduled for June 19 and 20. The nation’s largest two-day hay event will be held at Regancrest Holsteins in Waukon, Iowa. “Regancrest is well-known and respected in the area for their highly productive dairy genetics and farming practices,” says Matt Jungmann, Farm Progress national events manager. “We are very pleased to have Regancrest as the host for the Hay Expo in 2013.” Regancrest runs a diversied operation that includes some of the most sought-after dairy genetics in the country. A new dairy facility with a 600-head milking capacity was added in 1999. Along with milking cows and extensive embryo ushing and transfer work, more than 2,600 acres are farmed, plus custom work. Truly a family operation, family members are involved in every aspect of the farm and business. “The Hay Expo has a rich tradition of shows in
northeast Iowa, and we are looking forward to being back in the area for the 2013 show,” says Jungmann. The 27th annual Hay Expo returns to northeast Iowa after several shows were held in Minnesota and central Iowa. The Hay Expo has a history of choosing a new location each year. The show location rotates and has been in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The annual event has grown and evolved over the years and continues as the best resource for forage producers to see and learn about the latest technology, products and services for their industry. Sponsored by Farm Progress publications Wallaces Farmer, Wisconsin Agriculturist and The Farmer, the Hay Expo offers an all-encompassing prole of the new hay and forage technology, with an extensive exhibit eld and working equipment demonstrations conducted throughout each day. The two-day hay extravaganza will showcase mowing, conditioning, baling, hay handling and si-
lage demonstrations on alfalfa. Visitors will be able to compare the various equipment brands operating side by side under actual eld conditions. A 10-acre exhibit site will display balers, choppers, mower-conditioners, tedders, baggers, rakes, telehandlers, bale stackers, bale wrappers and more. In addition to the outdoor lots, the Haying Industries Tent will feature other products and services. Product specialists will be on hand to discuss forage seed, hay marketing, crop protection and production, conservation and crop insurance. Exhibitors plan to showcase a host of new products aimed at boosting the efciency and protability of hay and forage production.
