Washington County Farm City Day, June 29 Starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. located at Autumnwood Farms just three miles south of downtown Forest Lake. Take Highway 61 to 190th Street East to Granada Avenue, then north to the farm. This event is free, but any free will donations will go toward agricultural scholarships. Activities include hayrides, barn tours, creamery tours, cow milking demonstrations and baby animals. Steele County Supper with the Cows, July 20 The annual Breakfast on the Farm at Rick and Cathy Balzer’s Dairy Farm has been cancelled and rescheduled as a Supper with the Cows for July 20, from 4-8 p.m. The farm is located at 5005 NE 60th St. Owatonna. Free bus transportation will be available from the Steele County Fairgrounds starting at 4 p.m. with the last bus leaving to the farm at 7 p.m. There will be handicap parking only at the farm. The cost of supper will be $5 per person and children 5 and under eat free. The menu includes pork patties, potato salad, potato chips, milk and ice cream sundaes. Activities will include horse and buggy rides, petting zoo, barn tours, kiddy train ride, picture with a calf, youth activity tent, Steele County dairy princesses and ambassadors and an antique tractor and milk truck display. In honor of Fuel Up To Play 60, the dairy princesses and ambassadors will lead an exercise every hour for 10 minutes. Todd County Breakfast on the Farm, July 20 Starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. at Twin Eagle Dairy in Clarissa, Minn. Cost is $1 per person. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, milk and coffee. Charlie Johnson of Johnson Farms in Madison, SD received the 2013 MOSES Organic Farmer of the Year award. Johnson Farms has 2,800 owned and rented acres that Charlie manages with his brother, Allan, and cousin, Aaron. The Johnsons excel in land stewardship and conservation practices and maintain a strong commitment to their community. “Farming, service and land stewardship extend beyond the farm elds of Johnson Farms,” Charlie said. “As farmers and stewards of the land, the best crops we can plant are the seeds of opportunity for the next generation of farmers. Cultivating the future is the most important function of stewardship.” Anyone can nominate a farmer for this award. Board of Animal Health conrms one cow in Pennington County died of anthrax The Minnesota Board of Animal Health conrmed today that one 4-year-old cow in Pennington County died of anthrax earlier this week. This is the rst documented case of the disease in Minnesota since 2008. The cow was found dead on the farm on Monday. Samples were collected on Tuesday and sent to the North Dakota State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Fargo, North Dakota. The Board received conrmation of the positive anthrax diagnosis on June 6.
