Continued from NICC | Page 4 A 49- by 275-foot addition to the freestall barn was constructed, as well as a 23- by 125-foot area for the robotic milkers, ofces and a meeting room.

Other improvements included a 150- by 105-foot square basin manure pit with a two-stage system for sand settling, headlocks in the entire barn and sand bedding throughout the entire facility, including the existing stalls.

The ceiling was insulated and the freestall barn was converted to tunnel ventilation. They installed cow brushes in the new part of the barn. Brushes will be added to the older areas of the barn prior to the open house on March 27.

They also added a Juno feed pusher. It is programmed to operate 10 times a day from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m., and it stops during feeding times.

“Cow comfort was a top priority,” Kregel said.

She noted that even with this winter’s bitter cold, everything has continued working. They have not had

People in the dairy community UW- River Falls students take top honors at Regional Dairy Science Conference A University of Wisconsin-River Falls Dairy Club team took top honors in the quiz bowl competition at the Midwest Regional American Dairy Science Association- Student Afliate Division (ADSA-SAD) Conference in Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 31- Feb. 2.

More than 400 students from 13 universities around the region attended the conference to expand their knowledge on the dairy industry. Steve Kelm, professor of animal science, accompanied the 44 members from UWRF who attended.

The conference included educational sessions, intercollegiate competitions, and networking or social events.

UWRF competed in both the junior and senior divisions of the quiz bowl competition, with the UWRF team taking home top honors in the senior division Friday evening. The senior team included: Jeff Neuser, Manitowoc; Isaac Solum, Rice Lake; Erik Warmka, Fox Lake; and, Eric Zwiefelhofer, Bloomer. The senior team placed rst after defeating UW-Madison in the semi-nals and Ohio State University in the nals. The junior team, consisting of Liz Boesl, Boyceville; Eryn Orth, Winona, Minn.; Brad Rostad, Zumbrota, Minn.; and Sierra Solum, Rice Lake; was defeated in the semi-nals.

Laura Paine hired as Grazing Broker Southwest Badger has hired Laura Paine for a new Grazing Broker position.

Her primary responsibility will be to connect landowners with grassland acres to livestock producers who want to lease grassland acres for grazing. Paine began Grazing Broker work on Feb. 17. Her home ofce is in the Iowa County Land Conservation ofce in Dodgeville. Most recently, Paine was the Grazing and Organic Agriculture Specialist at DATCP where she provided statewide educational programming on grazing and organic farming, and market development for grassbased and organic products.

Brian Holmes takes interim post in UW-Extension and CALS Ag and Natural Resource Programs Brian Holmes, who retired last year after a long career as professor and Extension specialist in biological systems engineering, has been named interim University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences associate dean for extension and outreach and UW-Extension co-director for Agriculture and Natural Resources. That position opened when John Shutske was named UWExtension interim provost and vice chancellor.

During his career Holmes worked with UW-Extension agents and farmers and others across the state sharing his expertise in the design of livestock housing, feed storage and other agricultural facilities.

Holmes begins his new position on March 1. He will share the UW-Extension co-director for Agriculture and Natural Resources duties with David Williams, current associate program director.
