Patnodes partner with school for educational farm tour

CORCORAN, Minn. – As fifth grade students rush off the school bus on to Patnode Dairy, one of the first questions is, “Can we name a cow?” and they quickly become fascinated by the large Holsteins traipsing around the freestall barn.

Daryl and Lori Patnode, and their son, Andrew, hosted 25 students from Rockford Middle School-Center for Environmental Studies on their 100-cow dairy in Hennepin County near Corcoran, Minn., on March 17.

The farm tour was part of McKenzie Gregory’s exploratory class Grass to Glass, where students learn about the dairy industry.

“Kids nowadays know very little about farming unless they’re connected themselves,” Gregory said.

Daryl agreed.

“So many think that milk comes out of the grocery store,” he said. “By having [kids] on the farm, they see how it all works.”

Gregory’s course is offered each quarter of the school year as part of the middle school’s STEM magnet program.

Students are enrolled in one of five courses which are designed by teachers, and give children the opportunity to further learn about a topic related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

“A driving question carries the course – ‘Grass to Glass’ is a figure of speech, but the driving question is, ‘How does milk get to the glass from grass?’” said Gregory, a fifth and sixth grade writing teacher who grew up on her family’s dairy farm in central Minnesota.

Every Friday during the quarter, the students study a particular theme related to dairy farming – from animal nutrition and husbandry to the nutritional benefits of milk in a diet – in a manner easily comprehendible by 11 year olds.

“We’ve studied the ins and outs of the cow,” Gregory said. “We’ve also used math, too, like how many pounds of food and gallons of water will fill up a cow.”

With promotional materials and videos from dairy organizations, Gregory prepares her students for what they will see and learn on the Patnodes’ farm.

“Everything we do now leads to the tour at the Patnodes’, where Daryl and Lori can tell all about what they do,” Gregory said. “Kids get the cool exposure and experience of setting foot on a dairy and learning how milk goes from the cow to a gallon in their refrigerator.”

For the last three years, the Patnodes have hosted Gregory’s class each quarter. When Grass to Glass was first created, Lori was the secretary at the middle school and eager to help with the class curriculum.

“I really wanted to dispel the stereotypes surrounding farming,” Lori said. “I wanted to show children how cows are treated well and where milk cows from. A tour allows them to see everything first-hand.”

During the hour-long tour, students had the opportunity to identify feedstuffs in a TMR, explore the calf barn, and learn about milk quality in the milkhouse. The tour concluded in the parlor, where the children learned about the industry’s progress of milking cows – from once using a step-saver to the dairy’s current swing-12 parlor.

“We’ve come a long way with milking cows, which is pretty cool,” Daryl said.

Unlike other farm tours the Patnodes have hosted for young children, Gregory’s students were well prepared for the visit with questions about the dairy’s operations.

“For fun, I always like to ask the students how many bulls are in the milking barn,” Lori said. “The kids might think for awhile, but they’re pretty proud

to say none because bulls are boys.”

Gregory agreed.

the tour, and that makes it fun for the kids,” she said.

Over the past 11 quarters, Gregory has developed her course into a class highly sought after by many students.

During the third quarter every year, the class partners with the school’s FFA group to fundraise for the Great American Milk Drive. In the last three years, the fundraiser has been able to donate more than $3,500 to the local food shelf for the purchase of milk for those in need.

However, the success of Gregory’s course would not be possible without the support from fellow staff members, the district and community.

“It takes a lot of planning,” Gregory said. “The support I’ve received from the Patnodes and the school district have allowed me to share my passion for dairy with students who wouldn’t get this experience without the class.”

While only a short few weeks in the school year, both Gregory and the Patnodes hope Grass to Glass leaves a longlasting impression on the young minds.

“Some may never think of dairy again; some might find a career in [agriculture] because of this class,” Gregory said. “I want them to have the knowledge and respect for dairy farming, and I want the kids to learn.”

Daryl agreed.

“They’re pretty young, but this is something they’ll always remember,” he said. “When they pass our farm on the road, they’ll tell their parents about their tour, and that’s what we want – to spread the positive message.”

Mine the opportunities

MADISON, Wis. – Mine the opportunities.

That’s the advice Lowell Catlett, a retired agricultural economics professor at New Mexico State University, offered at the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) conference March 16 in Madison, Wis. Catlett encouraged his listeners to tap into and mine the possibilities that changing times bring.

Lowell Catlett “I truly believe in all my heart and soul that it’s the best time to be in agriculture,� Catlett said. “And it’s the best time ever to be alive.�

He offered examples, such as the

way agriculture has met the demands placed on it. One of those demands was providing an average of 2,450 daily calories to a growing population, 3.6 billion people in 1970.

In the United States in 1970, 20 percent of disposable income went for food, Catlett said. The world number was far greater, at 60 percent. Now, Americans spend less than 10 percent of their disposable income on food.

Another measure of success is economic growth. The United States recently became the first $18 trillion economy, Catlett said. That $18 trillion is onefourth of the entire world economy.

Other nations have shared in the success. China counted nine out of 10 of its people in poverty in 1970. “And, today it’s down to one in 10,�

Catlett said.

If projections about future population growth prove true, during the next 25 years the world will need to double the

amount of protein derived from eating meat, Catlett said. Doing so will require more intensive animal operations, most of them in the United States. Meeting the challenge is an opportunity for United States farmers.

It’s not only people who need calories. Catlett said more people both here and abroad keep pets, and they, too, are generally well fed. “It’s not only the best time to be alive, it’s the best time to be alive if you’re a dog, cat or horse,� Catlett said.

The United States is home to more horses now than it was 100 years ago. “Our horses used to pull us up and down the road. Now we pull them up and down the road,� Catlett said.

The growth in specialty food is yet another opportunity for farmers. Catlett gave the example of slow chickens, as in slow growing so their meat is more tender.

Organic food presents an opportunity for farmers, said Catlett. The impact of organic agriculture was not even measured 25 years ago, but now it accounts for more than 4 percent of all food sales.

Agritourism is another field of opportunity. Rural people are earning money from endeavors ranging from leasing land for hunting to charging admission fees to corn mazes.

The use of new technology is helping create opportunity. “Robots are coming,� Catlett said. “The fastest use of commercial robots in agriculture, of course, is in this industry: robotic milking.�

The average commercial robot not being used in agriculture is paid for in just two years. “So, get ready for the robots,� he said.

Robots are continually being improved. A recently developed robot is so skilled that it can thread a needle using one hand, Catlett said. The same robot is so sensitive that it can differentiate a ripe peach from one that is not. “It’s the best time ever to be alive,�

Catlett said in closing. “It’s the best time ever to be alive if you’re a cow. It’s the best time ever to be in agriculture. But you [need to] mine it.�

Solberg presents at MDI Winter Dairy Series workshop

NEW PRAGUE, Minn. — Although the audience may have been small, interest was high when Livestock and Grazing Specialist Kent Solberg spoke during the Minnesota Dairy Initiative Winter Dairy Series workshop March 13 in New Prague, Minn.

Prospective and current grazers listened intently as Solberg, of Sustainable Farming Operations, went through the why’s and how’s of sucKent Solberg cessful grazing.

The greatest advantage Solberg stressed is soil health, which relates to soil function – the ability to capture, store and cycle water. It is dependent on good soil aggregate structure, which is built by microbial activity. Soil health is reflected in the ability to cycle nutrients—requiring active and balanced microbial populations, allowing the microbes to feed the plants. Soil microbial activity mediates 85 to 90 percent of

Solberg stressed five principles to promote soil health – keep soil covered, minimize soil disturbances, increase crop diversity, keep living roots in the soil and integrate livestock.

Using photos taken at his own and other operations, Solberg emphasized the power of diversity, using mixtures with at least one variety from each of four major crop types – warm season grass (corn, millet, sorghum, Sudan grass and teff), warm season broadleaves (sunflower, soybean, cowpea and buckwheat), cool season grass (oats, wheat, annual ryegrass and cereal rye) and cool season broadleaves (clovers, turnips, field pea and radish vetches).

Diversity provides good grazing even during dry seasons.

Studies have shown that integrating livestock makes a huge difference in building soil health.

Solberg pointed out the difference in animals grazing versus mowing.

“Grazing is the mechanical act

of harvesting. There are enzymes in the saliva, there’s tugging rather than shearing, like mowing. Plus there’s the manure, and milk foam dripping off from nursing calves. Even shed animal hair feeds soil microbes,” he said.

Grazing can be a low-cost option for raising dairy heifers, reducing feed costs by 50 cents per day, per heifer versus lot feeding.

The percentage of plants grazed is very important to plant roots and regrowth. With under 50 percent usage, the roots do not stop growing; with 70 percent of the plant removed, 50 percent of the roots stop growing for 17 days; and at 90 percent of the plant removed, 100 percent of the roots stop growing for 17 days.

“You may think that, if you’re not grazing it down, you’re wasting it, but that’s wrong. You have to rebuild the root system,” Solberg said.

grazing too soon damages plants. More frequent moves translate to greater forage response. The use of 30 to 50 percent of available forage is recommended, which makes sense since most of the nutrients are in the top one-third of the plant.

Grazing density – the pounds of animals grazed per acre – is also crucial.

High density triggers a mob mentality and results in less selectivity in grazing and higher trampling. Trampling feeds microbes in the soil.

A density of 50,000 to 200,000 pounds per acre is best for animal performance when used with 30 to 50 percent use. On the other hand, a density of 200,000 to 1 million pounds per acre is best for improving soil health at 25 to 30 percent use. Solberg suggested mixing it up throughout the season and from year-to-year for best results.

Rest durations should be based on weather, intensity of grazing, health and size of plant root system, the time of year, and plant composition of the pasture, not on the calendar or a set schedule.

The best tool for managing density, use, rest and recovery is portable energized fencing.

“You’ll usually have bigger paddocks in August than June,” Solberg said.

He next turned his attention to Brix, the dissolved plant solids that include sugars (sucrose and fructans), minerals, amino acids, proteins, lipids and pectins. High forage Brix is desirable as it increases animal gains as well as milk components. High Brix forages are more drought resistant, freeze tolerant, and more resistant to plant disease and pests.

The stage of maturity affects both the quality and yield of forages. If grazing for energy, the sweet spot is mid to late maturity, while the sweet spot for animal efficiency is boot to early seed head.

Solberg said grazing is a learned behavior. The best time to start is with heifers since it’s difficult to jump right from the feed bunk to pasture with old-

er animals.

He then suggested producers consider resource concerns they have for their farms – whether it’s to build crop diversity, build soil aggregates, improve the water cycle, use integrated pest management, increase soil organic matter, provide pollinator habitat, provide wildlife cover, etc. He suggested to start, producers identify a field on their farm, identify the resource concerns they have for that field and consider dual purposing forage needs for livestock in conjunction with address-

ing the resource concerns.

Seeding annuals as cover crops can help to address summer slumps. Annual forages help to get through slumps, with fall rye helping in April and May, oats from May through October, sorghum and corn in July and August, kale in August through December, and ryegrass in May-June and again from August through November.

Inter-seeding cover crops into cash crops, and seeding annuals to extend the grazing season are other options.

Holdvogt is sixth sister crowned dairy princess

NEW MUNICH, Minn. – Throughout the last 20 years, ve Holdvogt sisters have represented their parents, Alvin and Bernie, in their role as Stearns County Dairy Princesses. On March 11, sisters Judy (Holdvogt) Jensen, Teresa (Holdvogt) Mueller, Betty Holdvogt, Joanie (Holdvogt) Hiltner and Katie (Holdvogt) Lauer cheered on their youngest sister, Gina, as she became the sixth and nal Holdvogt sister to hold the title.

“I’m very excited,” said 19-yearold Gina. “It’s like I’m completing a family legacy, and I hope I can make my family proud by representing the dairy industry in a wonderful way.”

Gina’s mother agreed.

“We’ve been involved in the Stearns County Dairy Princess Program since before Gina was born; she grew up with this,” said Bernie, who milks 90 cows with her husband and sons, Thomas and Gerald Holdvogt, near New Munich, Minn.

The Holdvogts rst became involved in the program in 1997, when Judy was a senior in high school.

“I was proud to come from a farm,” Judy said for her reasoning to be a dairy princess. “And once I got to college, I realized the importance of educating others about the dairy industry; it was a fun and good experience.”

Judy served as a dairy princess for two terms – in 1997 and again in 1999; Theresa was given the title a short time later in 2001, then Betty in 2003, Joanie in 2005 and Katie in 2010.

“It became a strong family tradition,” Judy said. “We were honored to represent dairy farmers.”

During Judy’s reigns, the state dairy princess program was still organized by regions. However, when Theresa was crowned a county princess, the program shifted to a statewide competition with 12 nalists selected to compete for the title of Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

Watching her older sisters exemplify their role as dairy princesses, it was no surprise Gina wanted to follow in their footsteps.

When it came time for Gina to prepare for the county competition, her older sisters were readily available to offer advice and coach her through the mock speeches and interviews.

“Right away I asked them for suggestions to prepare myself,” Gina said.

“They all supported me in one way or another – looking over my speech, practicing interviews, doing my hair the night of – they all encouraged me throughout.”

Officials promise commitment to Mexican partnership

Dairy prices, like thermometers and snow, fell as Winter Storm Stella attacked the Northeast. New York was spared the huge dump of snow that was expected but that which did fall caused enough turmoil. Weather had already raised havoc in the West and some expect revisions in the January Milk Production data.

Be that as it may, lackluster cheese demand and an abundance of fresh cheese is blamed for faltering CME prices, as traders awaited the February Milk Production report but the prices are now more competitive globally.

CME block Cheddar sunk to $1.35 per pound the week of March 13, lowest level since May 25, 2016, but it rallied Friday, closing at $1.40, up a penny and a half on the week and the first upward climb in five weeks, but is 8 3/4-cents below a year ago. The barrels fell to $1.35, lowest price since May 16, 2016, but regained some ground Friday to finish at $1.3650, down 3 1/2-cents on the week and 11 1/2-cents below a year ago. Sixteen cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME and 23 of barrel.

Cheese production in the Midwest is active and keeping pace with readily available milk, reports Dairy Market News (DMN). Even with spot milk as low as $5 under Class III, cheesemakers are turning offers away. The challenge for some Midwestern cheese manufacturers is finding a middle ground between cheese production and managing cheese inventories, which are reportedly long.

Demand reports are mixed. Some contacts report steadiness in retail and specialty orders following a post-Super Bowl lull. However, some report a softness on spot orders, suggesting buyers are holding off while cheese prices continue to weaken. The market undertone is unsteady, says DMN. Western milk is also readily available and keeping cheese makers busy. Current output is meeting most buyer requests. Some end users suggest their cheese needs are fully satisfied and are hesitant to increase purchases. A few contacts suggest activity from food service and retail accounts is slightly slower but cheese processors describe generally steady domestic demand. In addition, some export buyers are expressing more interest in response to lower cheese prices.

Western cheese inventories are still heavy and available storage limited.

Cash butter saw a meltdown to $2.11 per pound Thursday as sellers unloaded 22 cars at the CME. Friday saw a closing price of $2.13, down 3 1/4-cents on the week but 7 1/2-cents above a year ago. A total of 32 carloads traded hands on the week in Chicago.

DMN says Central butter producers are seeing no shortage of cream. Some say Class II interest is increasing, but cream is still available and at prices favorable to butter makers. Butter output is active. Inventories are building when demand allows but reports on butter orders are increasing as spring approaches.

Some contacts point to heavy inventories and question whether current demand, although strong, is adequate enough to keep stocks manageable. Others suggest demand is strong enough and inventories are comfortable for late summer/early fall ordering. The market tone is “steady.”

Western butter makers report very little change from the previous week. Cream is readily available and manufacturers seem willing to actively churn in order to fill current orders. Domestic demand is steady, but processors say interest is light outside of contracted purchases. End users are focusing predominantly on immediate needs, buying hand to mouth as opposed to putting up large volumes of butter into

storage. Inventories are generally growing, according to DMN. The spot Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 80 1/2-cents per pound, down a half-cent on the week but 7 3/4-cents above a year ago, on 13 cars sold.

California’s latest surveyed nonfat dry milk price fell 9.2 cents and USDA’s latest National Dairy Products Sales Report showed the powder down 7.8 cents.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski wrote in his March 14 Early Morning Update that “Political tensions between the US and our powder buying friend Mexico has people concerned.”

The U.S. Dairy Export Council’s (USDEC) Tom Vilsack, the International Dairy Foods Association’s (IDFA) Michael Dykes and National Milk’s Jim Mulhern traveled to Mexico this week to try and calm the waters, promising to continue a “strong commitment to their time-tested partnership with Mexico’s dairy industry and consumers,” according to a joint press release.

“We have always seen Mexico as a partner first and a customer second,” USDEC’s Tom Vilsack told Mexican dairy leaders attending the National Dairy Forum in Mexico City. “That’s why we intend to continue working with you and your industry to expand the consumption of dairy products in a way that benefits both countries.”

“Mexico is our friend, ally and most important trading partner,” said NMPF’s Jim Mulhern. “Our goal this week in visiting Mexico is to communicate our steadfast commitment to our partnership with the Mexican industry, even as we continue to explore ways to deepen that relationship by working on issues of mutual benefit.”

“The United States proudly provides the majority of imported dairy products to Mexican consumers,” said IDFA’s Michael Dykes. “We strongly believe that it’s in the best interest of both countries to preserve and enhance our excellent trade relationship, now and in the future.”

Vilsack and Mulhern spoke at the Femeleche conference, attended by Mexican dairy industry leaders, farmers and government officials. The three CEOs also met with a variety of government officials and the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.

But, the chilliness may not all be political. The Daily Dairy Report’s (DDR) Sarina Sharp asked the question in the March 10 Milk Producers Council newsletter; “Why is Mexico so conspicuously absent from the U.S. milk powder market?”

She reports that U.S. milk powder exports to Mexico in January totaled 41.9 million pounds, down 4.6 percent from the impressive volumes of a year ago.

She explained that “There are likely a number of reasons. Mexican milk production climbed 4.6 percent in 2016, and imports of nonfat dry milk (NDM) and skim milk powder (SMP) grew 10.5 percent. It is unlikely that Mexican demand for milk powder grew enough to absorb greater domestic production and substantially higher imports. Rather, Mexican milk powder buyers are well-stocked and patient,” according to Sharp.

She adds that “The strong dollar and weak peso encourage continued inaction. Global milk powder inventories have grown as well, offering end users the opportunity to diversify their sourcing should they find it advantageous. Mexico’s tariff structure allows for up to 80,000 metric tons of NDM or SMP imports tariff-free each year from WTO members, which include Europe, New Zealand, and Argentina. End users at home and abroad have been well-served to sit on the sidelines and threaten to move their business else-

where,” she says, “But cheap product will likely coax some of them back to the market eventually.”

Back home; USDA data shows American cheese demand in January was down 6.2 percent from December and down 1.8 percent from a year ago. The “other” cheese category was down 3.3 percent from December but up 5.3 percent from 2016. Total cheese disappearance was down 4.4 percent from December but 2.6 percent above a year ago.

Looking at 2016 totals, American cheese use was up 1.5 percent from 2015 and other than American cheese use was up 3.1 percent, putting total cheese use 2.5 percent higher than the previous year. FC Stone called the data “OK, but solid for lack of a better descriptor.”

U.S. cheese exports have suffered as U.S. prices made Uncle Sam uncompetitive. The DDR says cheese exports accounted for 7.1 percent of U.S. cheese output in 2014, 6 percent in 2015, and 5.2 percent in 2016.

“That’s an impressive testament to domestic demand for cheese,” the DDR stated, “that the U.S. market continued to command a premium through much of 2015 and 2016 even as exports waned and production climbed.”

Falling prices in Chicago will hopefully get U.S. cheese sailing again. The March 10 Dairy and Food Market Analyst (DFMA) points out that “Historically, CWT-assisted sales have accounted for more than half of all U.S. American cheese exports, at times, as much as 75 percent.”

The DFMA also reports that, while the Canadian industry is “positioning to block imports of U.S. origin dairy products, Canadian farmers are filling the gap by purchasing U.S. origin cows. During January, 5,771 head of U.S. origin herd replacements were sent to Canada, which was the largest monthly trade statistic in several years. This is an ongoing trend,” the DFMA says. “We continue to hear anecdotal reports of cattle sales from our dairy farmer network.”

January domestic butter disappearance fell sharply in January from December and was 14.7 percent below January 2016. Exports, on the other hand, were up 126 percent, thanks largely to Canada.

America’s taste for butter is growing. As I previously reported, Burger King has joined McDonalds in turning away from margarine in their breakfast offerings and reports are mounting of other restaurants making the switch. Bloomberg, citing USDA data, reports that Americans are expected to eat 8 percent more butter this year than last and “Hipsters” are even dropping it into cocktails and coffee.

Unfortunately, fluid milk consumption slipped some in the first month of 2017. Packaged fluid sales totaled 4.26 billion pounds, down 0.8 percent from January 2016, according to USDA. Conventional product sales totaled 4.03 billion pounds, down 1.1 percent from a year ago; organic products, at 228 million pounds, were up 4.7 percent.

Organic represented about 5.4 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.26 billion pounds in January, up 3.5 percent from a year ago and made up 29.6 percent of total fluid sales in the month. January skim milk sales were down 11.9 percent from a year ago.

The figures represent consumption of fluid milk products in Federal milk order marketing areas and California, which account for approximately 92 percent of total fluid milk sales in the U.S. Speaking of fluid milk; California’s April Class I Turn to MIELKE | Page 11

Con�nued from MIELKE | Page 10 milk price is $16.76 per cwt. for the north and $17.04 for the south, down $1.86 and $1.85 per cwt. respectively from March but $1.50 per cwt. and $1.51 above April 2016. They are the lowest Class I prices since November 2016.

The northern four-month average now sits at $18.07, up from $15.88 at this time a year ago and compares to $17.54 in 2015. The southern average, now at $18.34, is up from $16.15 a year ago and $17.82 in 2015. The April Federal order Class I base milk price is announced by the USDA on March 22.

As it always does, USDA’s monthly Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, issued March 15, echoed dairy projections contained in the March 9 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report.

The Outlook reported that U.S. milk cow numbers climbed to 9.36 million head in January, 6,000 more than December 2016 and 56,000 more than January 2016. Yield per cow averaged 1,937 pounds, 35 pounds above January 2016.

Feed price forecasts for corn and soybean meal for 2016/17 are $3.20-$3.60 per bushel and $310$340 per short ton, both unchanged from last month’s forecasts. The alfalfa hay price decreased from $129 per short ton in December to $128 in January; $13 lower than January 2016.

Based on recent data, the 2017 forecast for milk cows is now 9.38 million head, an increase of 10,000 head from the previous forecast. Milk per cow is forecast 10 pounds lower than last month’s forecast, at 23,185 pounds for the year. These changes result in a milk production forecast for 2017 of 217.5 billion pounds, 100 million pounds higher than last month’s forecast.

Looking globally, the European Union (EU) announced that nearly 44 000 farmers from across the EU have applied for support for agreeing to voluntarily reduce their production of milk in the last quarter of 2016.

“This EU milk production reduction scheme, launched last summer and financed with “150 million, was one of the flagship measures decided by the European Commission to face the milk crisis,” an EU press release stated, and “contributed to the rising trend in EU milk prices over the last few months, balancing the markets.”

Meanwhile; farm milk production continues to trend higher throughout the U.S., according to the USDA’s weekly update. “Most regions are generating higher volumes of milk that they struggle to utilize.”

“Some plant managers in the Mid-Atlantic say that milk receipts are so abundant that it gives the feel of May. Midwest contacts believe that milk output will exponentially increase from mid-March through May. Arizona milk volumes are expected to reach their flush levels within the next three weeks. Milk yields are so high in New Mexico that farmers are selling some milk to calf farms and looking for spot sale prospects to avoid discarding their milk,” the report stated.

not happen. In fact, whole milk powder (WMP) prices moved higher, lifting the entire index up 1.7% vs. the previous event. Butter and anhydrous milkfat (AMF) prices also improved, lifting 4.9% and 3%, respectively, compared with the prior auction. Skim milk powder (SMP) prices collapsed again, down 10.1%. The SMP average price of $1,948/MT brings GDT prices in line with EU-28 SMP prices; both are now hovering just above Intervention levels at $1,791/MT, assuming 1.06 euros to the U.S. dollar. Preliminary EU-28 January milk production totaled 27.3 billion pounds, which is seasonally 2.4% more than December 2016 but 2.3% less than last year. Overall, the report, which was in line with expectations, came as little surprise to markets. France tops the list for year-over-year declines, down 278 million pounds, followed by Germany, down 251 million pounds. EU processors produced the same amount of cheese this January as they did the year before but 0.6% less SMP. At the same time, WMP production was nearly 6% higher in January, suggesting a disproportionate amount of milk moved into that channel compared to a year ago.

The U.S. dairy herd just keeps growing along with milk production. U.S. milk production totaled 16.7 billion pounds in February, up 2.3% from a year ago, after adjusting for leap day. In this afternoon’s Milk Production report, USDA estimated the milking herd at a 20-year high of 9.367 million cows, up 4,000 head from January and 56,000 head larger than a year ago.

The agency revised upward its assessment of the January milking herd by 3,000 head.

Texas and New Mexico reported huge gains in milk output because they are no longer suffering the impact of Winter Storm Goliath, which sti�ed milk production there in early 2016. Michigan (up 4.8%), Iowa (up 4.6%) and South Dakota (up 4.6%) continue to report robust increases in milk output, compounding growth from years past. An early start to the spring �ush has already strained processing capacity in the Northeast. Abundant milk and scarce plant space are sure to be a theme in much of the country again this year.

As of Feb. 28, U.S. butter stocks totaled 282.6 million pounds, 20% higher than the previous year. The January to February build was well above the �ve-year average of 33.5 million pounds. On March 22, 2016, CME spot butter prices were $1.9575/lb., 16.25¢ less than today’s settlement price.

The stock build was likely caused by stronger production and slower sales, two factors that do little to support current spot prices. That said, yesterday’s Global Dairy Trade auction results for butter at $2.17/ lb., on an 80% butterfat equivalent could provide a level of support for U.S. spot butter prices. Still, CME butter prices could be due for a downward pressure. Cheese stocks continued to expand in February as well for similar reasons—slower sales and anticipated higher production based on stronger milk output in cheese-producing states. At the end of February, total U.S. cheese stocks were 1.26 billion pounds, up 6.4% vs. the prior year and 2.9% more than in January. American cheese stocks climbed to 774 million pounds, 21.9 million pounds more than January. Over the past �ve years, American cheese stocks from January to February have declined more often than an increased, but for years with gains, the increase averaged 14 million pounds, well below the current pace. Strong milk supplies appear to be translating into higher dairy U.S. butter stocks set a new record level for product production that, for now, appears February, according to the latest Cold to be outpacing sales.

Couple manages dairy with plans to purchase

The path to ownership

DUNSANDEL, Canterbury, New Zealand – Michael and Susie Woodward have one goal in mind: to become sole owners of a New Zealand dairy farm; and with the industry’s structure, the young couple is well on their way to fulfilling that goal.

Currently, the Woodwards are 50:50 share-milkers of a 1,000-cow dairy farm near Dunsandel, Canterbury, New Zealand on the country’s South Island.

“We are farm orphans of sorts, and are using large-scale farming to get back into ownership,” Michael Woodward said.

“The dairy industry in New Zealand is blessed with a few pathways to get into it.”

Michael is originally from New Zealand, growing up on the country’s North Island and raising Angora goats with his family. Susie is an American native, who was raised on a 400cow dairy in Upstate New York and worked in California before moving below the equator.

The couple met in 2005, and has since gone through the required phases to acquire their

After working as employees on a dairy farm, Michael and Susie were presented the opportunity to contract milk from the dairy and be paid based on production. Since then, the Woodwards have entered into the final phase of dairy farm ownership, where they provide the cattle, equipment and staff, and pay the

running costs of the operation, while the dairy farm owner supplies the fixed assets.

In total, there are more than 8,000 dairy farm owners across the country with an additional 3,000-some individuals participating in the share-milking program.

“Dairy farming this way gives us the ability to progress

from junior positions to senior or management positions quickly with the right amount of focus,” Woodward said. “Largescale farming also generates an income and a lifestyle that you can’t get in a town job.”

With the help of five fulltime employees, the Woodwards are able to fulfill the day-to-day operations of the dairy. While

Michael focuses on staff engagement and oversees the management practices, Susie recruits new employees and maintains all bookwork and herd health records.

“On a normal day, all farm jobs are shared. These can be a mix of shifting effluent irrigators, setting fences up for grazing, measuring grass, mowing grass or feeding out silage,” Woodward said.

Although operating a large herd, the Woodwards only use one employee at a time to help with milking. The cows are milked two times each day in two groups in a 50-stall rotary parlor, with automatic takeoffs.

An employee begins milking one group of cows at 4:30 a.m., and then again at 1:30 p.m.

Another employee begins milking at 7 a.m., and then again at 3:30 p.m.

“The team operates on a sixday on and two-day off roster,” Woodward said.

Michael and Susie sell their milk to Synlait for use in milk powder and infant formula. They are one of few dairy producers who do not sell their products to the Fonterra conglomerate that takes in nearly 90 percent of the country’s milk supply.

Although producers need $12.17 per cwt. to break even, the historical average has been $14.32 per cwt., Woodward said.

“In an average pay-out, living off the farm is very sustainable. However, in the last few years, this has meant that a lot of costs have been cut to make it through,” Woodward said.

To make due, the young couple capitalizes on their herd’s potential on minimal resources. They use the Kiwi cross – a breed composed of three-fourths Holstein Friesian and one-fourth Jersey – to breed a cow that can produce 100 percent of its live weight on a primarily pasturebased diet.

“The Kiwi throws a cow with the capacity of a Friesian with the solids and black feet of the Jersey, which is ideally suited to walking to and from the [parlor] each day,” Woodward said.

This unique hybrid allows the Woodwards to produce 12,500 pounds of milk per cow per year with 988 pounds of milk solids on a grass-based diet.

Swenson offers guidance on cutting expenses, improving liquidity

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. – Due to a $1.50 difference in the Class III milk price between 2016 and 2017, most dairy farmers are feeling the pinch in their checkbooks.

“There is a lot of concern about where the basis will go,” said Tim Swenson, senior dairy business consultant at AgStar Financial Services during a dairy profitability Tim Swenson seminar hosted AgStar Financial by Wisconsin Services Farmers Union on March 15.

Swenson said while farmers may not have much control over the milk price they receive, they can control their cost of production.

He stressed the importance of dairymen knowing their business well enough to make independent choices on expense reduction, purchasing style and long term impact.

“Are you reducing expenses for the right reasons? Do you understand your purchasing style, and the longterm impact of reducing expenses today? There is no one right answer,”

Swenson said.

Swenson used breeding expenses as an example.

“Short term cash decisions could affect operations and the industry for many years to come,” Swenson said.

“You could save money today on not buying semen or feeding a bull, but down the road you won’t have any cows milking. In the short term you have saved money, but the lasting impact is that it killed your dairy.”

Swenson said the simple answer to boosting revenue is to make more quality milk. Unfortunately, life isn’t that simple.

“Focus on milk shipped vs. milk produced,” Swenson said. “Increase your percentage of saleable milk.

Identify and minimize why cows are not going in the bulk tank.”

Depending on what an individual dairy farm’s processor wants, whether it be butterfat, protein or other solids, the need to truly understand the mailbox price is evident.

“Quality, somatic cell count and components can pad those checks,” Swenson said.

Swenson also advised producers to convert assets to cash and boost liquidity.

“Do you have any non-productive land with a good stand of timber?”

Swenson said. “Excess feed, excess heifers or other livestock can all be

converted to cash.”

Swenson went on to discuss the two means of calculating expenses: cash flow breakeven and cost of production.

“Your cash flow breakeven is your cash expenses plus labor cost, plus the term principal and interest on loans, plus cash capital expenditures, per hundredweight of milk shipped,” Swenson said. “If your breakeven is below the mailbox price, that’s more money in the checkbook. If your breakeven is higher than the mailbox price, that’s less money in the checkbook.”

Feed costs typically make up almost 50 percent of a farm’s expenses.

Impact to the operation can be mitigated by understanding income over feed costs, “You may want to critically review discretionary ingredients,” Swenson said. “Also, look at profit maximizing rations as opposed to least cost rations. Reduced feed costs cannot negatively impact income over feed cost.”

“Keep tabs on your feed inventories, and make forage quality a priority,” Swenson said. “Manage your bunkers and silos to reduce feed shrink.”

“It’s not a windfall, but it’s cash flow,” Swenson said.

Labor costs are also another piece of the puzzle worth discerning.

“Understanding worker output vs. wages can help to maximize output per shift,” Swenson said.

Understanding employees’ likes and dislikes can also help to maximize worker output and minimize turnover.

For example, if a milker is much more skilled at raising calves or feeding, or he or she just prefers those roles over milking cows, then a switch in roles is worth consideration.

“Leveraging talents of current employees and attrition can provide opportunities,” Swenson said. “Employee turnover drains efficiency because of the time and resources needed to find replacements and train them.”

Cull revenue, or the value of animals leaving the herd, is another means of generating cash flow. Swenson said if there’s a cow you know won’t complete her next lactation she should be culled at dry off, not after

she freshens.

“Cull them when they dry off when they’re fat and sassy, not when they have milked off all their fat,” Swenson said.

Swenson also recommended maximizing efficiencies in an operation’s facilities, such as milking systems, and examining animal health costs such as hoof trimming, vaccinations and fresh cow protocols.

“Go after root causes, not symptoms,” Swenson said.

As far as overhead costs are concerned, Swenson suggested looking at equipment maintenance, particularly with aging machinery.

“Quantify the cost of new machinery as opposed to repair,” Swenson said.

Overall, Swenson urged those in attendance to keep their long range vision for their farms in mind.

“Don’t cut corners and make independent choices,” Swenson said.

“Most of all, cows don’t know what milk prices are whether it’s $24 milk or $14 milk, so keep treating them like the queens they are.”

MADISON, Wis. – Studies have shown that cows who had a great start as infant calves have a competitive advantage over their herd mates who didn’t necessarily get off on the right hoof.

From the minute a heifer calf is born, she has unlimited potential. It’s all up to her caretaker to help her unlock it.

Therefore, the theme for this year’s Dairy Calf and Heifer Association annual conference, “Sky’s the Limit”, is fitting.

The conference, to be held April 11-13 at the Madison Marriott West in Madison, Wis., is geared toward anyone with a passion for raising dairy replacement calves and heifers.

With the latest in industry developments, calf and heifer management strategies, hands-on demonstration labs, trade show and networking opportunities, there is something for everyone who attends.

“In the last 10 years, the conference has evolved to include anyone who raises calves, not just calf and heifer growers,” said Ann Hoskins of the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association conference committee. “If you have a dairy farm, you also raise calves.”

While the organization and its annual get-together have grown to include all dairies that raise calves, the focus still lies with calf and heifer research and development.

“As an industry, the industry has shifted in the last 10 or 15 years to focus on the need to grow good calves and heifers,” Hoskins said.

Between the knowledge being dispensed and presented, to the opportunity to be in the same room with other individuals who share a similar passion for calves and heifers, there are many chances to learn, grow and gain knowledge to take home and use on the farm.

There is also an opportunity to earn continuing education credits, as it has already been approved for nine credits by the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, a professional certification organization for animal scientists.

In addition, the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab will also host a wet lab as well as numerous farm tours.

Hoskins is in charge of selecting speakers for the annual conference, and is excited about this year’s lineup, consisting of professors and industry professionals on the cutting edge of calf and heifer research.

Registrations, which can be found online at Calfandheifer.org, are due by March 29.

Tell us about the farm you currently operate. We own and operate Shir-man Registered Holsteins. We milk in a tiestall barn that holds 47 cows, but we have two groups as we try to milk 60 cows. In addition, we have 70 youngstock. We also run 360 acres of alfalfa, corn and soybeans.

Tell us about the farm you currently operate. We have a 60-cow herd with 300 owned and rented acres on the northern edge of the Twin Cities metro area. We raise hay, corn for silage and pasture for rotational grazing. Nine years ago, we began processing and bottling milk on the farm. It is packaged in glass bottles under our own label of Autumnwood Farm. Currently, we deliver to 65 stores, cafes and coffee shops throughout the metropolitan area.

How did you get into farming? Both Todd and I attended the University of Minnesota-Waseca and Twin Cities, and then worked in the dairy industry before returning to my home farm in the fall of 1995. We worked in partnership with my parents, Tillman and Shirley Fingerson, until 2008 when we took over the farm.

How did you get into farming? I have been involved in dairy farming all my life.

I was raised on my family’s registered Holstein farm. After receiving my agricultural education degree from the University of Minnesota, I married my husband, Pat, and we transitioned into taking over his family farm.

What is one fundamental philosophy you learned growing up and still stand by on your farm? Like most farm kids, we developed a strong work ethic working alongside our parents.

We knew the investment of time, effort, sweat and toil needed to have a successful farm and a healthy herd of cows. We work to carry out these same efforts in our own herd.

What piece of technology/equipment do you have now that you wished you had growing up? Our skid steer is one of the most useful pieces of equipment on our farm. It is used all day long and saves us a great deal of time.

A Request for Proposals targeted to business consortiums and farmers interested in utilizing anaerobic digester technology to build, operate, and maintain a system to treat manure from dairy farms is now available from the Public Service Commission (psc.wi.gov/biogas/rfp.htm). Anaerobic digesters work to produce renewable energy in the form of biogas and incorporate a system for treating wastewater that will capture nutrients and reduce pathogens.

Late last year, Governor Walker, in an effort to address water quality, asked the Public Service Commission (PSC), the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to step up, think big, and draft a Request for Proposal. “Water quality is a top priority for us,â€? Governor Walker said. “This joint effort is important progress, and we will continue working toward a sustainable solution to ensure our natural resources remain viable for generations to come.â€? “The proposals will be evaluated on the ďƒžnancial viability of treatment technologies including capital, long-term operation, and maintenance.

We want to make sure that they are in it for the long haul,â€? said DATCP Secretary Ben Brancel. “A successful proposal will be evaluated on their ability to produce energy efďƒžciently, remove nutrients from the manure and reduce pathogens.â€? “Clean, safe drinking water is a priority for us at DNR and so is ďƒžnding effective, sciencebased solutions to water quality challenges. A digester system that can also treat water and reduce pathogens is yet another tool that can be used to improve water quality in Kewaunee County and elsewhere,â€? said DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp. “While we and DATCP are already working on rule changes to address water quality in the state, we are thrilled the Governor asked us to join the PSC and DATCP in this effort to obtain a sustainable solution to this issue.â€? “Pulling together creative solutions from the private sector industries involved in an integrated biodigester with a water treatment system will be crucial to the success of any potential proposals,â€? said PSC Chairperson Ellen Nowak. “We can add value to the renewable energy beneďƒžts of digesters by ensuring they are part of a holistic response that helps address groundwater, surface water, and drinking water issues. I thank Governor Walker for challenging his cabinet to collaborate in order to multipurpose our efforts and ensure versatility of state dollars.â€? “The treatment of the wastewater beneďƒžts us all when extremely clean water can be returned to the land or provided to dairy cows,â€? said Brancel. “This biodigester project is unlike anything done in the past in Wisconsin and aligns with Governor Walker’s goal of supporting the agriculture economy in the State while ensuring our natural resources are safe and healthy. A lifelong cow man Filk’s life honored as MLBA Hall of Fame inductee

ST. PAUL, Minn. – It has always been known in the Filk family that Herb Filk liked dairy cows – so much so that it didn’t take him long into his life to gure out how to spend the rest of his days.

“We had all been told many times that by the age of 4, he knew every cow in the barn. He knew them by name and what they needed. He was born a cow man,” said his daughter-in-law, Marian Filk.

According to his family, Herb lived his life as a dairy farming cow man and died as one, too, at the age of 76 in 1985. To honor this life dedicated to bovines, the Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association inducted Herb into its Hall of Fame on March 16 during a reception held at the University of Minnesota campus in St. Paul, Minn.

“It’s a great honor and I’m especially pleased to be able to add it to the legacy,” Marian said.

Born in 1908, Herb was raised on a dairy in Hutchinson, Minn., started by his father, who established a herd of registered Holsteins in 1905. Herb caught on to farm life at an early age and took a great interest in the genetics of his family’s herd. This interest lead to a natural transition

into being a full-time dairy farmer as the second generation in the Filk family to do so.

In addition to milking the cows, Herb took on a larger role of promoting both the Holstein breed and the dairy industry. He served many years on the board of directors for the McLeod County Holstein Club and the Minnesota Holstein Association.

For eight years, he served as a national director for Holstein USA. “I think one of his biggest thrills was going to Brattleboro for those national Holstein meetings and working with men from all over the United States,” Marian said.

In addition to these travels, Herb also made his way to many dairy cattle shows to be a judge.

His family said it didn’t matter if Herb was in his own barn or at a prestigious show, he liked correct cows. Herb’s grandson, Ted Filk, knows this fact well. When Ted was together with his grandpa in the family’s tiestall barn, he could almost always guarantee one conversation.

“I can remember him coming out [to the farm] to look at the cattle. He did a fair amount of judging so he would always ask me, ‘What is the best cow in the barn today? Two weeks prior or two weeks in the future might be a completely different situation, but what is the best cow today.’

In addition to talking to his grandson about how to pick out a good cow, Herb made a point to teach other area farm kids, too.

“He had a major interest in the dairy industry and keeping kids interested. I know he helped many kids learn to take care of their animals, learn to show them and prot by their involvement in the Holstein industry,” Marian said.

It helped on his own farm as both his son, Robert, and grandson, Ted, took over the dairy in their turn. Although Robert also passed away in 1985, Marian kept the farming going with her family until it became too difcult. They held a dispersal in 1987; howev-

er, Ted wanted to get his family back in the business. He bought cows and turned the milker pump on again in 1990.

Ted and his wife, Bobbi, and their four kids, Zachary, 22, Jacob, 19, Joshua, 17, and Ella, 11, now run the 65-cow dairy in the same barn where Herb learned to milk cows.

“Everybody is involved in one facet or another. All the kids have shown cattle. We’ve had our fun with that. It’s time consuming and everything costs, but it’s fun,” Ted said.

Just like Herb, Ted and his family have registered cows and look to breed well-balanced cows.

“Most of our emphasis is on type, but we don’t sacrice pro-

duction, because at the end of the day production pays the bills,” Ted said.

In the future, the farm has potential to go on to a fth generation in the Filk family with Zachary potentially looking at his options to get into dairy farming.

But until that’s decided, the Filks are happy and honored that Herb was recognized for his dairy farming accomplishments.

“Its really important especially for the next generation to know about their great grandfather, the kind of person he was and the things he did for the industry,” Marian said. “That would have been forgotten had they not been brought forward at this time in their lives.”

An alternative to indoor housing Outwintering presents benefits to animal, soil health

MORRIS, Minn. – Despite the inclement weather conditions present throughout the Upper Midwest, outwintering is a management style growing in popularity. With proper execution, it is a suitable housing option for dairy animals of all ages and a solution for restoring latent pastures.

Dairy producers gathered March 9 at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) in Morris, Minn., to gain more knowledge about outwintering and see animals first-hand that are thriving in an outdoor environment.

Brad Heins, associate professor at WCROC, hosted the field day in collaboration with Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship Minnesota Education Coordinator Bonnie Haugen.

“With low costs of this setup compared to the greater building costs of confinement housing, outwintering wins every time,” Heins said.

Implementing outdoor housing Before outwintering dairy animals, there are items to consider – location and resources, and feasibility depending on the two aforementioned factors.

At WCROC, animals from 4 days of age to lactation are housed outdoors, with the exception of the conventional milking herd. While some groups are in an open lot that includes windbreaks, others have a standing shelter, such as a lean-to facility.

For young calves, the housing lot should be located close to the barn so their health can be closely monitored.

“With adverse conditions, shelter is a must,” Heins said. “If we see any animal struggling, especially the smaller heifers, we bring them close to the barn.”

Larger animals can be located further away from the main building sites because of their developed immune systems and ability to withstand the winter conditions.

The outwintered pens can be assembled on a pasture, field or dirt lot, as long as the locations deter runoff.

Once a location is determined, a perimeter surrounding the feeding and resting area can be established with high tensile fence or gates.

“No matter the type of setup, the biggest thing you have to do is provide shelter with a man-made windbreak or trees. Water is also a must,” Heins said.

While most outwintered animals are fed in a bunk, Heins has seen producers put their animals in a hay field with round bales and move the fence line as the cows eat the forage. This method also provides a natural windbreak, Heins said.

“This is something that could be set up in the fall and where you don’t need a tractor [for feed] in the winter,” he said.

Ideally, all pens are created in the fall when weather conditions are dry.

In a pen of 40 cows, the research center will create a bedded pack 60by 40-feet, establishing the pack with four to six large square bales for a solid foundation to outlast the winter.

Heins figured the milking herd used 17 pounds of straw per cow per day this winter.

“The weather really dictates when and how much we bed. If it rains 10 inches, we should bed again the next day,” he said. “Be careful, though, as the pack builds up over the winter and can reach heights of 5 to 6 feet off the ground.”

With many options for outwintering, strategies will vary with each dairy.

“Visit with others who have had success,” Heins said. “Learn how others are doing things; it might not work here, but it gives ideas to take back.”

bred heifers, springing heifers and dry cows, and milking cows.

Overlooking a valley, 80 bred heifers have a small tree line as a windbreak and are housed on a straw bedded pack.

“It’s a little different out here with not much windbreak, but the heifers do quite well,” Heins said. “We don’t have fertility and health problems as long as the bedding is dry.”

To ensure the herd does well in the elements, the animals are put out with good body condition scores, said Heins, and then bedded regularly to maintain a dry place to lie.

Outwintering the springing heifers and dry cows in an open pasture with trees lining the southwest corner is a newer practice. After four years of no activity on the pasture, Heins de-

cided it was best to return the cows.

“Not outwintering took a toll on the pasture, which was previously cut for grass hay. When we stopped, productivity went down quite a bit,” he said.

Unlike bred heifers, which are bedded and fed separately, the second group of cows is fed TMR and forage on the ground, where they then use the remnants as bedding.

“Without bedding, they lay together and generate heat,” Heins said.

“They also congregate in the trees for shelter.”

For more than 10 years, the research facility has outwintered its milking herd on a straw bedded pack with man-made windbreaks, in addition to a tree line.

who want to outwinter their dry cows and heifers, but are scared of putting out their milking cows,” Heins said.

To avoid frostbite on the cows’ teats, the milking herd is bedded every three days with two large square bales of straw. Also, after milking, the teats are covered in a powdered teat dip when temperatures fall below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Benefits of outwintering The benefits of outwintering on cattle health and productivity are comparable to those animals housed in confinement, Heins said.

In research studies conducted at WCROC, it was found the milking herd consumed 39.7 pounds of feed per cow per day while those in the compost barn consumed 42.1 pounds per

day. Additionally, udders were cleaner, no coliform cultures were identified in the outside environment, and milk production did not waiver.

Come spring when cows leave – hopefully before mud develops – pastures reap the benefits of outwintering with manure fertilizer throughout the lot, but also in the bedded pack.

“We usually spread out the pack on the pasture, but we have composted the pack for crop ground. It’s also good fertility for that,” Heins said.

To prevent creating a breeding ground for flies, Heins suggested turning the compost pile once a month.

There are many outwintering scenarios to choose from, each being a cost-effective way of maintaining animal health in the winter months and promoting soil health in the spring.

Mike Ingvalson has visited Mexico many times on vacation, enjoying the sun and sand while at a resort along the coasts; however, on his most recent trip, he had a different experience.

Ingvalson, along with Stan Linder and two other dairy farmers from southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin, traveled to Mexico for a few days in January to visit the family members of their Mexican employees.

“To run a good family business you’ve got to treat everyone like family,” said Ingvalson, who, together with his family and six Mexican employees, milks 450 cows near Caledonia, Minn.

For Ingvalson, making the effort to visit his employees’ families in their country helps create the family atmosphere and strengthens bonds.

Shaun Duvall agreed.

“Understanding creates better relationships. We’re all about helping producers understand their employees and vice versa so that the working arrangement is better for both of them. Understanding how each other lives and works only increases that,” Duvall said.

Duvall and Mercedes Falk are in charge of the program, Puentes/Bridges, that works with dairy farmers in the area to take them to Mexico to meet the families of their employees. They organized the trip and traveled with the group in January.

“What we’re trying to do here is help employers feel like their employees are worth more than just a check. To the employees, it helps them feel worthy and important if their employer cares enough to go to Mexico to meet their families,” Duvall said.

Linder, who milks 240 cows near Stockholm, Wis., has traveled to the area to visit families of his employees many times, even making the trek with his wife on their own.

“It changes your life,” Linder said. “You’re working so hard on a dairy farm and then you start getting help that’s dependable and loyal; you like the people and want to get to know them and their families. Or, visit with them when they go back. The first time we visited was pretty emotional.”

Although Ingvalson was expecting life in Mexico to be less luxurious, he didn’t realize how extreme it was until he arrived.

They were in the cities of Tlaquilpa, San Juan Texhuacan and Astacing, all of which are in the Zongolica mountain range. These communities are all about 2,000 people located in the state of Veracruz in the southeast part of the country.

“It’s a very poor area. When we first started going [in 2001], people didn’t have indoor plumbing. They had electricity, but that was pretty much all there was. The houses were plywood,” Duvall said. “It’s a different way of living. In these communities they live a subsistence lifestyle.

Visually it’s like going back 100 years.”

Families live on what they can grow and may have a goat, cow or hog. Many use mules to carry their firewood.

“They’ll have some corn fields even though it’s so steep you can’t even drive a 4-wheeler on it. They’ll grind their corn every day for their tortillas,” Linder said.

“It’s a totally different world.”

Although Mexico has a reputation of being dangerous, Duvall said that’s not the truth, at least where the group traveled.

“I generally think people are safe when they travel to Mexico, but you don’t do stupid things just like you wouldn’t do stupid things here. Is there more danger?

In certain places. Where we were we never saw it,” she said.

Linder said the community was as safe as any small community here in the Midwest.

“The people there are very family oriented, they’re happy and they’re pretty laid back,” Linder said, mentioning the people of the area they encountered were all welcoming.

Over the years, many people in the community have spent time away from their families working on dairy farms in the Midwest for years at a time, sending most of their earned wages back to their loved ones.

“These people are happy, they’re family oriented, they know how to work hard,” Ingvalson said.

One example of this hard work is Ingvalson’s former employee, Adrian Tzanahua, who Ingvalson spent time with while in Mexico. Tzanahua worked for Ingvalson for eight years, starting at the age of 18. He saved his money and sent it back to his family, who was able to build a house.

“He’s very proud of the house. How many 18 year olds do you know that would take care of their family by going out and working and being far away from

their family?” Ingvalson said.

This isn’t a rare case, either. Duvall said she has seen the village change.

“Now they’re building houses that are earthquake proof, that are big cement houses. That’s all a direct result of the money these [dairy farmers] pay their employees. It’s better than any kind of foreign aide,” Duvall said. “An employee on a dairy farm in the United States can make 10 times more money than they would make in Mexico, if they were lucky enough to have a full-time job. This is what creates the economic activity in these communities.”

Ingvalson was able to meet the 4-year-old son of one his current employees, Vaelentine Romaro, who hasn’t been home for three years.

“I got to hug his son for him. I took a picture of his son, blew it up and brought it back with me to give to him. He just about melted right there,” Ingvalson said.

Ingvalson said his employee has helped his young family have a better life, even if that means being away from them.

“Seeing people take the money they’ve earned [from our farm] and help them help themselves and succeed – there’s nothing more rewarding,” Ingvalson said.

With the new administration, now is a delicate time for people from Mexico, Duvall said.

“The Mexicans are afraid. I go to 30 farms and in the last few weeks they tell me they don’t go any place other than to go get groceries every two weeks. They also report higher levels of verbal insults in stores,” she said.

Linder has seen it, too.

“They’re scared about what will happen,” he said.

Once Linder’s three Mexican employees leave at the end of the year, he’s not sure he will find replacements.

“We’ll see what happens – if we find new employees or we might have to cut back,” he said.

Despite the political polarities between the two countries, these dairy farmers were able to create uniting bonds with their employees’ families.

“We take so much for granted. I thought I had a great mental concept before I got there, but once I went there it changed. Up here, we worry about what I want. It’s a me-mentality. Down there, they focus on what we want – a we-mentality that incorporates the whole community,” Ingvalson said. “I’m definitely changed.”

Dairy kids excel in winter sports

There were several Minnesota dairy farm kids who were involved in winter sporting events, including a handful who had very successful seasons.

Wrestling Landon Byer, a junior at Frazee High School, recently wrestled in the Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament March 2-4 in St. Paul, Minn.

Wrestling in the 106-pound weight division, Byer took sixth as an individual. Together with his teammates, the Frazee High School wrestlers came out third overall. In addition, Byer received an academic award from the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association. Byer is the son of Tammy and Marvin Byer, who milk 70 cows on their farm near Frazee, Minn.

Brothers, Clay and Cael Carlson also competed at the Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament, representing their school, Willmar High School. Clay, a junior, took second in the 132-pound weight division and ended the season with a record of 39-4. Throughout the year, Clay was ranked second in the state. Cael, a sophomore, also took second in his weight division of 126 pounds, ending the season with a 36-7 record. Cael had a No. 4 state ranking throughout the season. Both of the brothers lost 3-2 in the nals to wrestlers from Shakopee. As a team, Willmar qualied for state and took sixth. The Carlsons are the sons of Chad and Kindra Carlson, who milk 1,500 cows near Pennock, Minn.

Girls basketball The team from Goodhue High School took home the Class A trophy at this year’s Minnesota State High School Girls Basketball Tournament, keeping the title of state champion for the second year in a row. Included on that team were ve dairy farm girls: Emily Benrud, Kaitlin Buck, Kennedy Buck, Kjersten Veiseth and Mikayla Peterson.

Benrud, a starting junior guard for the Wildcats, averaged ve points and four rebounds during the regular season. In the three games at the state tournament, Benrud averaged 12 points per game, helping the team knock off No. 1 ranked Mountain Iron-Buhl in the championship game with a nal score of 73-51.

Benrud and three of her teammates were named to the Class A All-Tournament team. Benrud is the daughter of Roger and Michelle Benrud, who milk 100 cows on their organic dairy near Goodhue, Minn.

Mikayla Peterson said she had an important role supporting and cheering from the bench during most of the state tournament. The senior post player scored two points against Cromwell-Wright High School in the state seminal game. Peterson plans to attend Winona State University in the fall to major in early childhood and elementary education. She is the daughter of Scott and Kelli Peterson, who milk 55 cows near Goodhue, Minn.

Jill Klaphake, the daughter of Jim and Carol Klaphake, who milk 50 cows near Sauk Centre, Minn., was a starting guard on the Sauk Centre Girls Basketball team that placed second in Class AA state tournament March 15-18 in the Twin Cities. Sauk Centre defeated Minnehaha Academy and Watertown-Mayer before losing to Roseau in the championship. The Streeters nished their year with a 31-2 record. Klaphake nished seventh in school history in points with 1,103 and was also named to the West Central North All-Conference Team. She was also named to the Class AA All-Tournament team.

Samantha Gjerde, senior point guard for Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg High School, hit the milestone of 1,000 points scored in her high school basketball career, ending with 1,201 points. This year, the 18-year-old averaged 24 points per game, up from last year’s average of 15 points per game. In her senior season, Gjerde scored 670 points. Gjerde is a threesport athlete, who plays volleyball in the fall and will round out her year on the softball team as pitcher and shortstop. She plans to attend South Dakota State University in the fall to try to walk on to the university’s Division I softball team. Gjerde is the daughter of Paul and Jennifer Gjerde, who milk 280 cows near Sunburg, Minn. She and her siblings, Weston, 16, Maret, 14, Josie, 12 and Elsa, 12, help on the farm when they are able.

2 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk 1 cup butter, divided 2/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1 package (15-1/2 ounces) Oreo cookies 1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, softened 1-1/2 cups salted peanuts, coarsely chopped

In a large saucepan, combine the confectioners’ sugar, milk, 1/2 cup butter and chocolate chips. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook and stir for 8 minutes or until slightly thickened. Refrigerate until cool.

Meanwhile, in a food processor or blender, cover and process cookies until finely crushed. In a large bowl, melt remaining butter; stir in crushed cookies.

Press into a 13-in. x 9-in. dish. Refrigerate until firm.

Spread ice cream over crust; freeze. Stir peanuts into chilled chocolate mixture. Spread over ice cream. Cover and freeze for 3-4 hours or until firm. remove from the freezer 5 minutes before serving.Yield: 15-18 servings.

Kid Pleasing Spaghetti 1-1/2 pounds ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped 2-1/2 cups spaghetti sauce 8 ounces spaghetti, cooked and drained 3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1-1/2 cups milk 1-1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese, divided 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

In a skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in spaghetti sauce. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in spaghetti; set aside.

In a saucepan, melt butter. Stir in flour and salt until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from the heat. Stir in 3/4 cup cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese until melted.

Place half of the spaghetti mixture in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish.

Top with cheese sauce and the remaining spaghetti mixture. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar cheese.

Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until heated through.

Yield: 10 servings.

Party Carrots 2 pounds carrots, sliced 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules 8 ounces process cheese (Velveeta), cubed 2 tablespoons butter

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, cubed 4 green onions, sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Place 1 in. of water in a large saucepan; add carrots and bouillon. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 7-9 minutes or until crisp-tender.

Meanwhile, in another large saucepan, combine process cheese and butter.

Cook and stir over low heat until melted. Add the cream cheese, onions, salt and pepper. Cook and stir until cream cheese is melted.

Drain carrots; stir into cheese sauce. Transfer to a greased shallow 2-qt. baking dish. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until bubbly.Yield: 8 servings.

People in the dairy community Election results announced for MN Dairy Promotion Council The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced the results of the recent elections of board members to serve on two Minnesota commodity councils. The MDA is responsible for administering the elections and certifying the ballots.

The Minnesota Dairy Promotion Council elected the following members to serve two year terms: Peter Ripka, Ogilvie (District 2); Ken Herbranson, Clitherall (District 4); Doug Popp, Royalton (District 6); Corrine Lieser, Belgrade (District 8); Kathleen Skiba, North Branch (District 10); Charles Krause, Buffalo (District 12); Paul Fritsche, New Ulm (District 14); Keith Knutson, Pine Island (District 16); Dave Schwartz, Slayton (District 18); Christine Sukalski, Leroy (District 20); Margaret Johnson, Fountain (District 22).

Through the mandatory check-off program, farmers pay a percentage of their sale proceeds to their respective commodity council. Commodity councils use the funds to pay for promotion, communication, and research activities aimed at increasing crop value for growers.

Volker named 2017 Iowa Brown Swiss Princess Brylie Volker, who is the daughter of Shellie and Bill Volker from Sumner, Iowa, was recently selected as Iowa Brown Swiss Princess for 2017. Volker is active in the Harlan Fremont 4-H Club and the Sumner-Fredericksburg FFA chapter. Her projects have included dairy heifers, dairy quiz bowl and dairy judging. Volker is employed at Onword Swiss near Oelwein, Iowa. She will represent the Brown Swiss breed at various shows and events this summer, and the Iowa Dairy Princess Contest in August.

Duane Herzog, Freeport, Minn., dies at 46 Duane N. “Whitey” Herzog, age 46, of Freeport, died unexpectedly from a construction accident on Feb. 28 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, Minn., with Rev. Jeremy Theis ofciating.

Duane Norbert Herzog was born Oct. 12, 1970 in Albany, Minn., to Donald and Elizabeth (Arceneau) Herzog. He graduated from Upsala High School. He continued his education and played basketball for Mayville State University in North Dakota graduating with a degree in mathematics. After graduation, he began working at Arnzen Construction in St. Rosa, Minn., until starting his own business, New Age

Builders of Freeport. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Francis, Minn. Duane was an avid sports fan and went to most of his nieces and nephews sporting events to cheer them on. He was a hardworking man with a big heart who helped people when he could. He will be missed by many.

“He was a great person and our family enjoyed working with him. He was an all-around great guy.

He always had time to visit with our kids,” said Dan Roerick, who milks 100 cows with his wife, Sarah, and their four children near Burtrum, Minn. The Roericks had Herzog construct several buildings on their farm. “He was passionate about everything he did and expected 100 percent from himself and everybody he worked with. When he showed up, things got done.

He had a wealth of knowledge in ag construction.”

Dave Van Heel, from Rainbow Acres Dairy, LLC, a 1,200-cow dairy and crop operation near Swanville, Minn., had Herzog do construction on two freestall barns, and steer and heifer facilities, among many projects. Van Heel had a great admiration of Herzog as a person and worker.

“His integrity was second to none. He had an upbeat attitude and infectious smile and had deep family roots and great religious values,” Van Heel said. “Our loyalty to Whitey developed over the years as we appreciated his ne qualities as a builder and as a close friend of the operation and our employees. He loved agriculture and had the ability to oversee projects and make changes during construction to insure a better facility for the farm.”

Survivors include his father, Donald Herzog of Burtrum, Minn.; brothers and sisters, Fred (Alicia) Herzog of Randall, Minn., Gary Herzog of Swanville, Minn., Allen (Diane) Herzog of Freeport, Minn., Dennis Herzog of Burtrum, Minn., David (Teri) Herzog of Osakis, Minn., Shirley (Don) Winkels of Avon, Minn., Janet (Joe) Christen of Albany, Minn., and Janel (Alan) Marstein of Bowlus, Minn.; 17 nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Duane was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Herzog on Oct. 9, 1997; grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.

Serving as casket bearers were Fred, Gary, Allen, Dennis and David Herzog, and Shirley Winkels. Pall bearers were Janet Christen and Janel Marstein. Cross bearer was Randy Herzog and scripture bearer was Aaron Christen. Gift bearers were Teri Herzog, Diane Herzog and Alicia Herzog. Readers were Tom Ethen and Geraldine Bechtold. Eucharistic Ministers were Joanne Rothstein and Mary Jane Boeckermann. Honorary bearers were his nieces and nephews.
