Land O’Lakes to implement new buyout program

Volunteers receive equity payment in exchange of exiting milk contract with cooperative

DUNDAS, Minn. – Two years ago, Land O’Lakes implemented a base program for its dairy member owners as a way to protect the members’ price when demand wasn’t keeping up with how much milk production kept increasing.

Now, the cooperative based in Arden Hills, Minn., is adding another approach to try to curb the amount of milk on the market by instating a Voluntary Dairy Member Equity Buyout program for members in the East region and select milk sheds in the Upper Midwest.

“This decision was made because ongoing market volatility has impacted Land O’Lakes businesses and created economic uncertainty for many of our members. This was a mutually benecial, completely optional solution that could support Land O’Lakes businesses and members who choose to participate,” Land O’Lakes said in a statement.

For any members who voluntarily take part in the program, they will receive a one-time lump sum payment of their equity in exchange for exiting their milk marketing and membership agreement with Land O’Lakes.

“They do not need to stop dairying altogether,” the statement said.

Although the statement did not specify which milk sheds in the Upper Midwest this impacted, Paul Liebenstein, a Land O’Lakes member owner who milks 400 cows with his family near Dundas, Minn., said it included his dairy’s milk shed –a portion of southern Minnesota that stretches into South Dakota. Liebenstein had this information conrmed to him when he attended the cooperative’s annual meeting earlier this year and through a letter he received by email from the milk processor.

“Land O’Lakes doesn’t have any milk plants in this area. They’ve used this area as a balance for some of their other plants. They want to reduce the amount

of milk sold to Land O’Lakes in this area by 250,000 pounds daily,” Liebenstein said.

Land O’Lakes is using it as a marketing strategy.

“The buyout will help Land O’Lakes by limiting our need to market excess milk to unprotable outlets …” the statement said.

Liebenstein said this program could be good for dairy farmers looking to exit the business or those who are struggling nancially.

“Given the state of affairs in the dairy industry, I think this could be kind of a way out,” Liebenstein said. “Or if the banker is telling you you’re going

to quit whether you want to or not, this might be the difference between needing to sell the cows and the farm or just the cows. I think they (Land O’Lakes) will have the participation in it just because of the current state of affairs with the milk economy.”

This is not the rst time Land O’Lakes has tried to limit supply from its member owners. Two years ago, the cooperative implemented a base program in the Upper Midwest – a program that had already been in place in North Dakota, California and the East Coast.

If dairy farmers produced more milk than their 12-month history – their base – and Land O’Lakes incurred extra costs to market the milk, those costs would be assessed to the members who exceeded their base.

“The added structure and discipline of our base program has helped us be in a better position to capture market opportunities and maximize the value of member production,” said Brad Oelmann, executive vice president and chief operating ofcer for Land O’Lakes Services. “The discipline of the program provides Land O’Lakes with more precise insight into our members’ growth plans, while also offering our members a better understanding of the manufacturing capacity and/or third-party outlets we have to market their milk.”

Initially, many people were not happy with the program.

“It stopped our project [to make improvements on our farm]. Now we’re wondering how to move forward,” Mark Fjelstad said in a Dairy Star story from February 2016.

Since then, Mark and his wife, Diane, who milk 250 cows on their dairy near Zumbro Falls, Minn., and others in the industry have changed their thoughts about the base program as prices have continued in a downward trend the last two years.

“Today, I see the program as a blessing. Land O’Lakes is and was a proactive leader in protecting the market of its producers by creating the program that I have yet to see be used in our area,” Diane said.

Liebenstein had the same initial reaction and change in thoughts as the Fjelstads.

“We weren’t too excited about it. As time has gone on and we’ve seen what some of these other co-ops and processer have done …,” he said. “ … I think we have to commend them (Land O’Lakes) for doing this rather than letting us produce all the milk we want and then having milk they have to dump for half price and take a deduction on price.

Then, you’re penalizing those who didn’t expand with those who did. We’ve got a little more compassion about it since it came out in the rst place.”

But, Liebenstein does not think the base program should be permanent.

“At some point this needs to change or be addressed because how would you bring in the next generation if you’re stalled out on cows or they tell you that you have to cut back on production and not give you any more base,” Liebenstein said. “It’s a strange time in the dairy world.”

Minimize pain in calves with proper disbudding, dehorning

NICOLLET, Minn. – For numerous years, the process of removing horn bud and horn tissue in youngstock has been imperative for the safety of both animals and people working with dairy cattle.

The process can be accomplished through caustic paste disbudding, cautery disbudding or surgical dehorning, but must be done by inicting minimal pain on calves.

“All three approaches are painful and stressful to the calf,” Dr. Sandra Dr. Sandra Godden said.

Godden is a member of the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the University of Minnesota, where her interests include applied research in mastitis control, colostrum and calf health management, Johne’s Disease control and transition cow management.

Each method of disbudding and dehorning accomplishes the overarching objective, however, there

are technicalities of each method to consider when deciding which is best suited for a dairy operation.

Caustic paste disbudding has become a commonplace practice in the dairy industry, eliminating horn buds within the rst few days after birth. This method uses chemicals, such as sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide, to burn the horn bud tissue and surrounding tissues.

While caustic paste is arguably the least invasive procedure, plasma cortisol levels raise signicantly within an hour of application, Godden said.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is released in response to stress.

“Though calves may not show initial changes in behavior when the caustic paste is applied, after an hour calves show behaviors suggestive of pain for three or four hours,” she said.

Symptoms of pain may include head shaking and rubbing, inert lying, restlessness and decreased grooming.

Cautery disbudding may be done within the rst 6 weeks of age.

This method uses a heated bar with a conclave tip to destroy the horn bud and tissue.

“If completed without pain control, calves exhibit signs of severe pain, including struggling, rearing, falling, head jerking and vocalization,” Godden said.

Research has determined plasma cortisol levels peak at 30 minutes post cautery disbudding, indicating pain or distress in the calf, which may last up

to four hours.

Calves older than 2 months may undergo surgical dehorning, which removes the attached horn bud from the skull using a saw, embryotomy wire or scoop.

“Signs of acute pain are similar to cautery disbudding, where calves may demonstrate repeated standing and lying actions, kick their hind legs and lose appetite,” Godden said.

Effective pain management in all three practices should include a local anesthetic (lidocaine) with a cornual nerve block to block acute pain during the procedure and up to two hours after the procedure, as well as a nonsteroidal anti-inammatory drug (NSAID) for acute and chronic pain.

To maximize animal and human safety, and mitigate pain associated with horn tissue removal, Dr. Tom Jinkinson, of Davis Family Dairies, follows a strict disbudding protocol at the New Sweden Dairy location.

“Our rule is that we only disbud.

Dehorning at any age is not an option,” said Jinkinson, who has worked in health and nutrition management of neonatal to springing heifers for seven years at New Sweden Dairy near Nicollet, Minn.

Every year, Jinkinson and his team oversee the freshening of 11,000 cows. The dairy facility provides eight nurseries, which each hold 60 individual, climate-controlled stalls for calves up to 3 weeks of age.

At the New Sweden Dairy location, two individuals are responsible for disbudding all calves 10 days old and younger.

Calves receive a local anesthetic consisting of a lidocaine cornual nerve block and a tranquilizer (Xylazine) before employees use a heat-retardant butane disbudder to remove horn bud tissue.

“It’s easier for us to work with the calves when they’re still in individual stalls and small in size, which is safe for the employees,” Jinkinson said. “We also disbud at a young age, because the younger the calf, the less pain may be associated with disbudding versus removing mature horn tissue.”

Following this procedure, most calves return to normal behavior by the next feeding.

The importance of implementing a pain management strategy when disbudding or dehorning is paramount in raising healthy calves. “Imagine touching your hand to a hot iron or hot stove element for three to ďƒžve seconds. Now, imagine the acute and chronic pain that you would feel,â€?

Godden said. “This is similar to what the calves will feel if disbudded or dehorned without pain mitigation procedures.�

Calves that undergo disbudding and dehorning with a form of pain management are likely to demonstrate fewer abnormal behaviors immediately following the procedure. Those calves have also shown improved physiologic measures of stress and pain, such as reduced heart and respiratory rates, and a decrease in plasma cortisol levels, said Godden.

With newfound knowledge of the painful effects of these procedures, more dairy farmers are implementing pain mitigation strategies into their dehorning and disbudding practices. “More farmers are now adopting the use of local anesthesia and systemic analgesia. Calves are also being disbudded at a younger age on many farms,�

Godden said. “However, our industry has a long ways to go before pain management at disbudding and dehorning is a universally adopted practice.�

Jinkinson and his team have toyed with polled genetics, as well. While genetic companies have made strides towards increasing the number of polled bulls , there are still very few in the Jersey breed. “We’re always looking at genetics, but it is difďƒžcult to sacriďƒžce production for only half of the genetics contributing to horns,â€? Jinksinson said.

While Jinkinson is always critical of the procedures the farm implements – making sure they are the safest possible for both animals and humans – he is conďƒždent the disbudding practice is as effective as possible for the dairy.

Practices will differ from farm to farm, but dairy farmers should work with their veterinarian in improving a disbudding or dehorning practice that is mindful of pain mitigation.

Mark your calendars for the 3rd annual Dairy Cattle Welfare Symposium Registration is now open for the 3rd Dairy Cattle Welfare Symposium, scheduled for May 31 and June 1, 2018 at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Dairy Cattle Welfare Council (DCWC), a growing organization established in 2016, is hosting the event.

This symposium brings together dairy farmers, veterinarians, consultants, universities, and the dairy community to discuss best recommended practices with focus on animal well-being, management, husbandry, animal-people interaction, health, and productivity.

The ďƒžrst keynote speaker will be Dr. Carl Saďƒžna discussing “animal emotions, feelings and social interaction needsâ€?. Other speakers will include Mandi McLeod, Janet Helms, David Kelton, Jack Rodenburg, Conrad Spangler, Charlotte Winder, Geoffrey Dahl, Robert Hagevoort, Cassandra Tucker, Mike McCloskey, and Nina Von Keyserlingk. The program will also include short oral presentations on dairy welfare-related research by students from universities across the country.

New this year is the inclusion of a SpanishSpeaking session targeted towards farm managers and key employees. This session will be held during the afternoon of the ďƒžrst day, May 31. The goal for this Spanish-speaking session is to teach the basics of animal welfare, why it is important on the dairy, and how to train other employees. Participants can register to attend only this session for $75 a person or $200 for four people from the same farm.

Cost of registration for the full program is $200 until April 30th and $250 afterwards. Student registration is $75 and is limited to 30 people. The two-day program will offer 13 hours of continuing education credits for veterinarians and also for ARPAS. A simplistic, family-friendly lifestyle for Schroht Transition to organic suits Steele County farmer well

OWATONNA, Minn. – Although ďƒžnancial reasons were the driving force behind the decision for Aaron Schroht to switch to organic dairying, he has now fully embraced it for other reasons. It provides a better lifestyle for family

living and the simplicity of management.

But the steps Schroht has taken to get to where he is now have been slow and methodical.

Growing up, Schroht liked the idea of having a registered herd in a tiestall barn. “I had been buying heifers since I was in elementary school so I had a bunch of registered genetics,� Schroht said.

Even in college, his dairying dream hadn’t changed. “I never thought I would be milking crossbreds in my herd,� Schroht said.

In 2004, he returned home after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, joining his family on the dairy. In 2008, he bought the farm from his grandparents and the dairy herd from his parents.

farm and dairy, his dad helps with crops and equipment.

Schroht’s journey in the organic world started before his ownership of the farm. “My parents had always talked about going organic but they never took the steps to become certiďƒžed,â€? Schroht said.

They used minimal synthetic chemicals on their land and had always worked with an organic and biologicalbased crop consultant.

To be able to ďƒžnancially sustain the farm, Schroht decided to make management changes to approach organic certiďƒžcation. Knowing the cows would need to be grazed, he seeded land for pasture in 2007 and started grazing animals in 2009. “We weren’t going to put up a big freestall barn and it

was in the neighborhood when land price was really high,�

Schroht said.

High land prices meant not having the land to make feed for the herd, which meant adding cows was not an option. “We weren’t going to expand so we decided to try pasturing,� he said.

Along with talking with other grazing dairy farmers, Schroht learned from his crop consultants and by trial and error.

In 2012, Schroht began the one-year process to transition his herd to organic. Typically, his herd had a rolling herd average around 20,000 pounds of milk. That year, Schroht was able to maintain that amount. “That year we had good hay,� Schroht said.

ConƟnued from SCHROHT | Page 6 But Schroht had to buy corn since not all the land was certied yet. With $14 corn and having to ship milk conventionally at $14 cwt., Schroht had a tough transition.

“My parents had to help me nancially,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have been able to independently transition over at that time.”

But then Schroht ran into more challenges.

“We had a couple years of winterkill with the alfalfa. We took a hit production-wise there,” he said.

After being able to transition more land to organic, things are looking up. Schroht now has 150 acres dedicated to pasture and 200 acres for cropland.

“Last year was the rst year I didn’t buy any feed.

We’re just nally getting caught up,” Schroht said.

Although Schroht does not plan to have a 100-pound tank average, he is working to get the herd’s production back to where it used to be.

He has also made a big change to the herd’s breeding schedule. The herd is bred seasonally. Now Schroht breeds the cows to calve in the fall with a few exceptions if there is a hard breeder. This has allowed him to switch his milking schedule. For the rst time last summer, Schroht switched to one-time-a-day milking for the rst three weeks of July and then dried the herd off for the next month.

“One hundred calves being born in a few months is a lot of calves and a lot of work, but it’s really nice not having calves to feed at times during the year. I just have to feed cows, milk and be done,” Schroht said. “There are a few kinks to work out, but lifestylewise, I like it.”

It’s been a big benet so far after becoming

certied organic.

“One of the reasons why we switched is because it’s more family-friendly. It’s lined up with the cows being dried up when the kids are off in the summer, and we can get away easier now,” Schroht said.

But the children also like the farm life.

“The kids are really good helpers in the barn,” Schroht said.

Plus, they like showing animals at the county fair.

There have been other benets. Crops are now on a short crop rotation – corn one year, and oats and alfalfa the next. The grazing and a high-forage diet have meant less health issues for the cows.

“I can’t remember the last time I had a D.A.,” Schroht said.

There is also less mastitis. When Schroht does get a case, he learns to take care of it the same way he did when he was conventional.

“I still use some ointments, but I’ve learned a lot of times to just let nature run its course,” he said.

One area where the herd – consisting of Holsteins, Jerseys, Brown Swiss and crossbreds – has always excelled is reproduction.

“We always have a lot of calves born and have even sold heifers as replacements in the past,” Schroht said.

Now Schroht is using that to his advantage to start an organic beef herd.

“We have enough feed now to feed more animals,” he said.

All young heifers are bred by an Angus bull. All other cows in the herd are bred to dairy bulls using A.I. Schroht has just enough replacements to sustain

“It’s another way to diversify and ts in with the breeding schedule,” he said.

Overall, Schroht now likes the simplicity of his farming lifestyle and being organic.

“I don’t think there’s anything specic that says we’re better now. It’s just that I can do it with a lot less tools in the toolbox,” Schroht said.

It’s a lot different than the way he thought he would be farming while preparing for his career in college.

“Ten years ago, I didn’t anticipate being here, but I’m glad we have taken the steps to get here,” Schroht said. “We’re still ne tuning things but we’re on our way.”

In dairy isolation Lulich, Ketring face challenges posed by location

BENOIT, Wis. – Lake Superior likes to make its presence known one way or another, even on a small dairy farm 20 minutes from the shores.

“Sometimes, when the wind is just right, you can feel it coming off the lake,” said Christie Ketring, looking out over a snow-covered plain lled with heifers contentedly eating hay. “And, it’s cold.”

Their location is warmer in summer than others closer to the lake, but wind shifts make it harder for hay to dry because of the moisture in the wind.

“It is a delicate balance we face daily,” Joe Lulich said.

Ketring and Lulich farm near Benoit, Wis., in Bayeld County.

The couple milks 60 cows on the farm purchased in 1939 by Lulich’s grandparents, Sam and Josephine Lulich, and run over 900 acres, 200 of which is pasture. Before Lulich’s grandfather arrived, the farm they call home now was fairly wild with thick pine groves and heavy, wet red clay soils.

“Grandpa, my uncles and my dad cleared a lot of land in those early days,” Lulich said. “A lot of this used to be pine trees and swamp holes.”

Their location has made a challenging way of life more difcult at times, particularly when

equipment breaks down or inputs need to be purchased for the cows or crops.

“Our support folks such as dairy supplies, equipment, and crop and nutrition professionals are all a minimum of two hours away.

most things ourselves,” Lulich said.

While Lulich and Ketring both agree there is very little industry support for any sort of dairy farming infrastructure in far northern Wisconsin, it wasn’t always that way for dairying on Superior’s shores.

For example, in nearby Benoit, there used to be a creamery that

made butter and dry whey, a school and several cheese factories within eight miles of the farm. The Lulich family’s milk used to go to the Superior market just 45 minutes away for uid consumption.

neighborhood was abuzz with agricultural activity for several decades. In 1961, Lulich’s father, Dave, and uncles, Frank and George, started an Oliver dealership on the farm property. In 1967, George and Dave left the implement partnership and built a 62-cow dairy barn and Lulich Farms, Inc. was born.

Frank’s children would later go on to continue Lulich Implement, which eventually moved to a larger location up the highway.

“Also, in the ‘60s, my dad ran a buying station for the National Farmers Organization, which serviced farmers in northern Wisconsin, upper Michigan and northern Minnesota,” Lulich said.

“We had livestock and dairy here, and a lot of hay was sold over the years, too.”

Lulich’s father was an auctioneer beside being a dairy farmer and saw

the exodus of farmers either leaving or being forced out of the industry in the 1980s and 1990s. Up until his death in 2015, he worked to convince farmers looking for a new chapter to start in his area because of the good dairy barns sitting empty.

“It was depressing. He sold out his neighbors when they sold their farms, and no one came to start them back up,” Lulich said. “He was an advocate for new farms starting up because of their impact on communities around them. Dad and my uncle farmed together, and then split up in 1996. I went off to college and Dad held on to 10 cows and 50 heifers and pared down as much as possible so he could handle things while I was at school.”

Slowly but surely, Lulich Farms

got back on track.

“UW used to have a research farm in Ashland, and in the 1990s they sold the dairy herd and gave the farm to Ashland and Bayeld counties. Well, the county wanted to turn around and sell the land in 2010, so we had a special meeting to gure out the future of the farm because the community was still using it,” Lulich said.

That is where Ketring came into the picture.

“I had just moved to the area after working in the Virgin Islands for two years on a research farm there and was working in Ashland when my dad said I should go to this meeting,” Ketring said. “That’s where I met Joe. He invited me out to his farm, and the rst night I was there a down cow needed to be dragged out of the barn.”

First impressions aside, Ketring could tell the farm needed a set of fresh eyes. She and Lulich began laying the groundwork to take the dairy cows to the next level, starting with nutrition for every member of the herd from the newest calf to the oldest milking cow.

“We didn’t know what mineral and such we should be feeding because no one had ever told us.

Again, no industry support,” Lulich said. “That’s when we started doing soil and feed sampling. Our vet bill used to be $20,000 a year, but now he hardly comes out anymore.”

Ketring said that, while they have a growing herd of registered Holsteins and Jerseys, genetics come last.

“We’re laying the groundwork with nutrition rst. If you have good genetics but the nutrition isn’t there, you’ve got nothing,” Ketring said.

Rotational grazing is a key part of the nutritional puzzle for Lulich and Ketring, particularly with their location where cropping – especially putting up dry hay – can be next to impossible some years.

“The cows are so much healthier for it,” Lulich said.

Overall, Lulich and Ketring love their life as dairy farmers in isolation – even with its unique obstacles.

“Be patient,” Lulich said. “It’s fun to see progress.”

Strong demand for cheese keeps up with volume

As it always does, USDA’s monthly Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, issued March 14, mirrored dairy projections contained in the March 8 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. The Outlook credited recent growth in milk production per cow, for the increased forecasts for milk yields for the rst half of 2018 and says that will result in a 2018 forecast of 23,255 pounds per head, 25 pounds higher than last month’s forecast. The forecast for the size of the milking herd in 2018 was unchanged at 9.415 million head.

Feed price forecasts were raised. The 2017/18 corn price forecast is $3.15-$3.55 per bushel, an increase of 5 cents at the midpoint of the range.

The soybean meal price forecast is $325-$355 per short ton, an increase of $20 at the midpoint of the range. The alfalfa hay price was $152 per short ton in January, an increase of $4 from December and $26 from January 2017. Drought in alfalfa hay production areas has contributed to the higher prices.

Cash block cheese lost some ground the week of March 12 but rebounded and closed Friday at $1.5850 per pound, up 1 1/2-cents on the week and 18 1/2-cents above a year ago. The barrels nished at $1.56, up 6 1/4-cents on the week, 19 1/2-cents above a year ago, and the highest since Dec. 18, 2017. Seventeen cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME and 26 of barrel.

Snowstorms in the Northeast caused a number of Midwestern cheese producers to reduce production, according to Dairy Market News. “Cheese demand, particularly in the Italian style sector, has been negatively affected by the inclement weather as retail and restaurant shoppers are understandably remaining at home. Other cheesemakers continue to run full tilt, as demand for traditional Cheddar and specialty products is seeing continually steady to strong demand ahead of the spring holidays.”

“Milk suppliers are somewhat perplexed by the lack of intakes from Class III producers, as spring holidays loom and uid supplies are readily accessible. Fluid milk prices ranged from $1 over to $3 under Class III. “That said, a majority of contacts are uninterested in the spot milk market and suggest the discounts would need to exceed current offerings in order to consider reentering the fray.”

Western contacts anticipate cheese output will continue to ramp up as milk output increases through the spring. While relatively strong demand has kept pace with cheese volumes the last few months, a few

manufacturers suggest cheese stocks and production were a little lower, helping to support prices.

“Seasonal spring holiday demand is now mostly lled, but as long as U.S. cheese prices remain favorable compared to international prices, there should be a steady pull on stocks,” says DMN. “Some contacts are still concerned about the abundance of milk and whether the spring ush will overwhelm the capacity to produce cheese and pump inventories higher. Many feel the excess milk will nd its way into cheese vats and could put further pressure on cheese markets.”

Spot butter climbed to $2. 2175 per pound Wednesday but closed at $2.21, up a half-cent on the week and 8 cents above a year ago, with 6 sales on the week.

Cream accessibility remains somewhat slight for butter makers, according to DMN. Some contacts expected cream prices to decline this week, but prices maintained a steady path. Undoubtedly, Class II and III production increases are holding cream prices up, says DMN. Some Central analysts expect butter market prices to see a slight drawdown following the recent market bounce. “The noticeable price increase, they posit, was due to the new crop butter requirement put out by the CME Group. Regardless, butter market tones are undoubtedly unique in dairy, as they are determinedly bullish while other markets struggle.”

Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 69 cents per pound, a half-cent higher on the week but 11 1/2-cents below a year ago, with 15 cars sold on the week.

U.S. dairy market price transparency was enhanced this week as CME traders were enabled for the rst time to buy and sell physical loads of dry whey during a spot call just before the cheese. The new market nished Friday at 29 1/4-cents per pound, up 3 1/4-cents on the week, with one sale reported for the week.

California’s April Class I milk prices were announced by the California Department of Food and Agriculture at $15.97 per hundredweight (cwt.) for the north and $16.24 per cwt. for the south. Both are up 77 cents from March but 79 cents and 80 cents respectively below April 2017.

That put the four-month average at $15.68 for the north, down from $18.07 at this time a year ago and compares to $15.88 in 2016. The southern average is $15.95, down from $18.34 a year ago and $16.15 in 2016. The April Federal order Class I base price will be announced by the USDA on March 21.

Milk Marketing Order in the nation’s Number 1 milk producer are back on track after a judicial snafu put the procedure on hold. The issue has been resolved and the Agriculture Department is expected to issue a recommended nal decision soon. California dairy producers will then need to ratify it.

U.S. dairy exports started 2018 with a strong showing, with all products seeing increases from January 2017 except whole milk powder.

FC Stone dairy broker Dave Kurzawski called it a “continuation of recent trends,” in the March 12 Dairy Radio Now broadcast, and while the report was “pretty neutral to the market,” it was “a good way to start off the year.”

Cheese exports were down 1.4 percent from December but were up 18.9 percent from a year ago, with Cheddar exports down 19.7 percent from December but up 19 percent from a year ago. That was weaker than FC Stone had forecast, he said. Butter exports were down 23.8 percent from December but 17.6 percent above those a year ago.

Kurzawski also reported that dry whey exports were up 29.8 percent from a year ago and attributed that to taking market share from Europe. He added that, at current price spreads, he expects that to continue.

The talk of trade wars and ending NAFTA has added uncertainty to the global market, Kurzawski said. “We wonder if the Administration is crazy like a fox or is just crazy,” but believes President Trump may be “using some of the recent negotiation tactics and tariffs and things of that nature as bargaining chips for a more favorable NAFTA deal.” “I’m not really sure what that really looks like,” he concluded, “because we had a pretty good deal to begin with.”

U.S. imports of cheese were down 20 percent from December and 3.1 percent below a year ago.

Butter imports were up 46.5 percent from December but down 1.1 percent from a year ago. Anhydrous milkfat was down 73.8 percent from December but 8 percent above a year ago.

Meanwhile; the Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook says “It appears that U.S. domestic dairy product prices have been competitive with foreign export prices. In February, Oceania export prices for butter, cheese, and skim milk powder (SMP) were $2.39, $1.69, and 90 cents per pound, respectively.

Western Europe export prices for butter, SMP, and dry whey were $2.56, 76 cents, and 40 cents per pound, respectively.”

The Outlook adds that “The value of China’s dairy imports from countries around the world in January totaled 1.241 billion U.S. dollars. Adjusted for ination, this is about the same as the level reached in January 2014. Most of China’s dairy imports by value come from New Zealand and the European Union (EU); Australia and the United States vie for distant third.”

ConƟnued from MIELKE | Page 10 partner are for whole milk powder from New Zealand, infant formula from the European Union and Australia, and whey products from the U.S. China’s imports of cheese increased substantially in January; effective Dec. 1, 2017, China unilaterally lowered its cheese tariffs for most countries, including the U.S. and the EU, from 12 to 8 percent. New Zealand benets from preferential treatment due to its free trade agreement with China. Australia also has a free trade agreement with China, but benets are smaller since the agreement is only in its third full year and tariff reductions are being phased in.”

In recent testimony before the Ofce of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), the Consortium for Common Food Names (CCFN), an international non-prot organization representing the interests of consumers, farmers, food producers and retailers, urged the U.S. government to “intensify its efforts to repel attempts by the European Union (EU) to conscate generic terms within major trading markets, as well as within the United States itself.”

CCFN’s testimony was presented as part of the USTR’s preparation of its annual Special 301 review of intellectual property rights protections among U.S. trading partners, according to a CCFN press release.

“The persistent and serious problem of the EU’s transgressions regarding geographical indications (GIs) continues to be highly problematic for the U.S. food and agriculture sector,” said CCFN Senior Director Shawna Morris. “It will require continued vigilance and action on the part of the U.S. government. We ask you to continue the core objectives outlined in the 2017 Report and to continue to enhance U.S. efforts to hold our trading partners to their commitments.”

Legislation touted by U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) would establish a national, inationadjusted oor price for milk at $23.34 per cwt. The plan would be included in the Farm Bill now being drafted by the Senate Ag Committee.

The March 14 Daily Dairy Report says that “whenever the U.S. All-Milk price were to drop below the proposed oor, eligible producers would receive 45 percent of the difference, which is the same percentage once paid by the defunct Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) program. Because January’s All-Milk price of $16.10 per cwt. was $7.24 less than the proposed price oor, January’s payout would have been close to $3.26 per cwt. Under the bill, only farms participating in the Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP) would be eligible for payments and only on the rst 5 million pounds of production, providing more help to smaller farms than larger operations.”

Meanwhile; National Milk praised the introduction this week of H.R. 5275, the Agricultural Certainty for Reporting Emissions (ACRE Act).

An NMPF press release stated that “There is now bipartisan, bicameral support for legislation that will reduce a signicant regulatory burden on U.S. dairy farms. We fully support the House companion to the Senate’s Fair Agricultural Reporting Method (FARM) Act, which would prevent dairy farms from having to generate meaningless air emissions data under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).”

“The CERCLA provisions in question were originally enacted to address accidental hazardous air emission emergencies from toxic waste sites, and were never intended to be applied to dairy and other livestock farms. Through this legislation, Congress is stipulating that this burdensome regulatory overreach serves no legitimate health or safety purpose.”

Speaking of the Farm Bill, farmers are beginning to wonder when the Agriculture Committees will introduce their respective versions in the House and Senate.

Cooperatives newsletter writes in his March 9 issue that authorization for the 2014 Farm Bill runs out on September 30th of this year. He speculates that it will more than likely have to be extended until December 31st and it may carry over into 2019.

The House Agriculture Committee will likely introduce its bill rst, says Gray, “Probably the end of this month or in early April. The Senate bill will come along a little later, probably in mid-April.”

Gray also reminds us that USDA’s Farm Service Agency is moving ahead with the new Margin Protection Program (MPP) sign up and will be announced in early April and will be retroactive to January 1, 2018.

“Letters will be sent to dairy producers this month outlining the specics of the program that include changes made in insurance premiums on the rst 5 million pounds of milk. The letters will include detailed information on the payments based on the insurance premiums at the various margin levels,” Gray says.

Lastly; the International Dairy Foods Association

gave a thumbs up to a congressional proposal that would amend Section 199A of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to “resolve unintended consequences that have distorted the dairy marketplace,” an IDFA press release stated. “The proposal is designed to level the playing eld for IDFA’s cooperative and noncooperative members that produce milk and dairy products, and IDFA urges Congress to include this proposal in the nal appropriations, or omnibus, bill for scal year 2018 later this month.”

“Prior to passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on December 22, 2017, a tax provision called Section 199 provided businesses, including farmers and agricultural cooperatives, with a deduction based on the business income from domestic production activities. The new tax law signicantly altered the tax code and Section 199 along with it. A new Section 199A was included in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to continue providing this type of benet to cooperatives and their members, but the provision created an imbalance in the agriculture marketplace, including the marketplace for milk and dairy products.”

Dunham brings milking goats into crop, diversied livestock operation

FAIRCHILD, Wis. – Bekky Dunham married a crop farmer nearly two years ago, and even with 2,000 acres of land, beef cattle, horses and rabbits, something was missing.

“I went to UW-River Falls for animal science, and I wanted to use my degree,” Dunham said. “I gured, what’s one more species?”

She wanted to get into dairying, but milk prices and the size of cows steered her away from dairying conventionally, particularly when she would be doing all of the milking and chores herself.

As a result, Dunham will be shipping her rst load of goat milk from her 50 does later this month.

“My husband, Kodee, and I wanted something we could farm ourselves, and regular milk prices aren’t great,” Dunham said. “So I looked

into sheep and goats.”

Differences in demeanor sealed the deal for Dunham, who ultimately chose the goats.

“Sheep could really care less that you exist,” Dunham said. “Goats can be a pain,

but they really have great personalities.”

She decided to get her feet wet and learn about the species by purchasing a group of young Boer buck kids; Boers are bred for meat production.

As a result, she also learned early on that she’d be doing virtually all of the herd’s veterinary care on her own.

“The closest dairy goat veterinarian is in Brodhead, Wis., on the other side of the state,” Dunham said. “I feel like I’m capable of doing everything myself, but you’d think that with more goat dairies popping up that a dairy goat vet would be closer.”

That was her rst crash course in keeping goats. Dunham also learned that, even with colostrum, goat kids were far more delicate and nicky compared to calves. This lesson was especially painful to learn after making a big purchase.

“Kids can’t regulate their own body temperature, so they need to be under a heat lamp for at least the rst 48 hours,” Dunham said. “Also, I bought a doe kid for $1,000 and had her quarantined from the others. She was down one morning when I got home from work. She didn’t have a temperature, but I treated her anyway and a couple of hours later, she was dead. I did a postmortem just to gure out what was wrong, and her gallbladder was shredded. Her whole abdominal cavity was lled with bile.”

Dunham remained undeterred, and she was almost even more determined to grow her goat herd after those losses.

Over the course of 2017, she purchased groups of doe kids of all different dairy goat breeds such as Alpines, Angoras, La Manchas and Saanens.

“Kodee doesn’t care for the La Manchas because they look like they don’t have ears, but they’re really cute.

so far, though,” Dunham said.

Construction on a pack barn housing all the goats from kids on milk up to breeding bucks and close-up does began in July 2017. Goats were living in the barn by September, and the barn was mostly nished by November with a few smaller projects remaining.

“We’re a registered herd, so we had to get bucks and does in separate pens so we could start breeding and keeping track of who was getting bred and by who,” Dunham said.

Walls went up on the milkhouse and single-10 parlor in October, but due to the builder being delayed the pipeline didn’t go in until late February.

By then, does had begun to freshen and Dunham found herself milking all the goats by hand until the pipeline was installed, which was particularly trying with Dunham still working off the farm full time.

“I never knew how strong my hands were until I had to start hand milking,” Dunham said. “My hands were about ready to fall off by the time the pipeline went in.”

After Dunham passes state inspection, she will be shipping milk to an Amish goat creamery in nearby Augusta, Wis., which will then be shipped to Montchevre to be made into cheese. She is currently on a waiting list to ship directly to Montchevre.

“Right now, the Amish are buying my milk to feed to their pigs,” Dunham said.

Other than a few hiccups with building her goat herd, Dunham said everything is going well so far, and she has about 20 more does to freshen before everyone is in the bulk tank. She has already had two sets of triplets this season, and is currently keeping a watchful eye on a heavily pregnant doe that never has less than quadruplets when she kids.

“If there is anything I would do differently, I would put in headlocks or something similar if I had the money.

“I was very humbly surprised when I was crowned,” she said. “Right after that we went off the stage, and I did my rst interview. I remember being speechless and thinking, ‘Gosh, I need to talk.’ It was exciting.”

Harringa said besides her personal excitement of being princess, she gained a lasting respect for dairy producers and knowledge about the dairy industry.

“I had never seen a robotic parlor,” she said. “Just seeing all these new things I had never seen before really broadened my horizons. I was able to compare how dairies operated and was introduced to many new faces in the dairy community.”

A big part of the state’s dairy princess reign is visiting classrooms. Harringa said she was taken off guard when a child informed her he liked to eat sticks of butter. Others were happy to be informed about the dairy industry and agriculture as a whole.

“I denitely enjoyed going to the Boys and Girls Club in June right before Dairy Fest in Brookings,” she said. “ … These kids had no idea. It was very eye opening for them, and I was very glad to be there with them because they were so enthusiastic about dairy.”

Harringa said because she was able to interact with children in multiple facets, she was energized to change her major to early childhood

“I really enjoyed being with those kids,” Harringa said. “I just know I want to work with youth. I may end up working with kids in 4-H; I may end up being a teacher in a classroom. I just know that it is my passion to work with children.”

For others approaching a dairy princess application, Harringa has some advice.

“Remember your background in dairy,” she said. “Everyone always has different perspectives. It is always important to hear

about their backgrounds, traditions and ideas, and to always have mutual respect.”

But, in the end Harringa said she would not have had the memorable year she did without the inuential people who helped her along the way.

“I’d just really like to say a special thanks to Roger Scheibe, Midwest Dairy, Char Hovland, the many others from throughout the year, and of course my family. …

They’ve always been there for me and have always supported me. I can never thank them enough.”

Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I am a senior at Bridgewater-Emery High School, where I am involved in FFA and cheerleading. I live on my family’s dairy farm outside of Dolton, S.D., and we milk around 70 cows. After graduating, I plan on attending South Dakota State University to major in dairy production. I plan on then pursing a career in the dairy industry by taking over my family’s farm or becoming an animal nutritionist.

Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I live in Salem, S.D. with my two younger brothers and parents. I work at our family dairy farm. I also intern at our vet clinic and waitress at a steakhouse. We milk about 85 cows in a double-4 herringbone parlor. I plan to attend Mitchell Technical Institute for animal science in hopes of one day becoming a vet tech, animal nutritionist, or possibly returning to our farm.

Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important because it has been a part of my life and has been in our family for so many years. I am a rm believer that you have to stand up for what you believe, in even if it means you have to stand alone. I think that the dairy industry is something worth ghting for and standing up for. We are rewarded time and time again from our cattle, and we get so many great attributions from them like all of our dairy products. Without dairy farmers, agriculture would be smaller and there would be no more dairy products (which is a world I don’t want to live in). There are not very many dairy farmers anymore, and those that are dairy farmers are in their upper 50s or 60s, so we need the younger generation to step up and help take over all these dairies. Most people love dairy products, but you can’t eat or get any of them if nobody takes the dairies over and keeps them going.

Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me because it is an area my family is very involved in and where we connect. It allows us to come together as a family as we go to shows together. It is also important to me because it can provide products and food for the population. This is also why it should be important to everyone, as the dairy industry provides the population with products. The dairy industry should also be important to others as it provides jobs and other opportunities, not only for farmers, but for other people that are involved in the agriculture industry.

What qualities do you have that will make you a good dairy princess? I am passionate about the dairy industry and keeping it alive and going. I love interacting with people to hear their stories and experiences about dairy farming and what they do differently.

Morgan Kohl 18 years old Parents: Mike and Marcy Kohl Kranzburg, S.D. Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I am a senior at Waverly-South Shore High School and will graduate this coming May. Growing up on a farm, I have always had a passion for agriculture. I love being outdoors, helping in the eld and working with animals. Over the years, I have developed a desire for showing and judging dairy cattle in FFA and 4-H, but also caring for them and being involved within the dairy industry. I am employed at MoDak Dairy near Goodwin, S.D. I am responsible for feeding and treating calves, and the overall care of the herd. I am active in gure skating, 4-H, FFA, science fair and volunteering within my community. I am excited to be enrolled at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. this fall. I am pursing a degree in animal science. Upon graduation, I plan to work within the dairy industry and continue judging and showing. My goal while attending SDSU is to maintain a 4.0 GPA while staying involved in other activities such as dairy cattle judging. I want to be involved and active while learning all I can.

As of now, my long-term goals are to remain in the Midwest, however, I am keeping my options open and will review opportunities as they come.

What qualities do you have that will make you a good dairy princess? I want to be a spokeswoman for the dairy industry. Since I was little, I loved living on a farm and begged my parents to become dairy producers. I am currently employed on a dairy farm and enjoy what I do. I have actively promoted the dairy industry over the past years by giving public presentations on various dairy topics in 4-H and FFA. I have been involved in the promotion of dairy by assisting at dairy days at MoDak Dairy, serving ice cream at a local ballgame for FFA and recording public service announcements promoting the 4-H dairy project. Personal qualities I possess include being hard working, dedicated and driven. I always strive to go the extra mile in everything I do. I have a thirst for knowledge and want to learn as much as I can, especially about the dairy industry. I also believe in the future of the dairy industry and agriculture. I am outgoing, personable and want to put my skills, knowledge and passion to work promoting the dairy industry.

Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important not only because I need it to be healthy, but it’s also part of my livelihood. The dairy farm where I work, MoDak Dairy, provides jobs to many people, including myself, allowing everyone to care for their families. We live in a state that’s main gross domestic product is agriculture. Dairy is an essential part of agriculture. We need the dairy industry as it creates jobs, impacts agriculture and helps keep our bones strong and bodies healthy.

If you could pick one dairy message to encourage more dairy consumption, what would it be and how would you deliver it? “Milk – it does a body good.”

This message hits home for me. I would deliver the message by telling a personal story regarding why it’s important to keep dairy in your diet. My grandma didn’t care for milk products and avoided them most of her life. She was advised by health professionals that she needed to drink more milk. However, she didn’t listen. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis several years ago. Over the past few years, her bones have begun to deteriorate. Her frail bones have led to

If you could pick one dairy message to encourage more dairy consumption, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The products are safe. To deliver this, I would talk to people who may not understand the process of making products or the dairy industry. Another way this could be delivered is by allowing farmers and producers to tell their stories. This can be done by making short videos of different farm operations and sharing them with the public. These stories could also be put in larger news publications to spread it to those who do not receive agricultural publications. I would also like to deliver this to younger students in schools, allowing them to have an idea where their food comes from, and then they can take information home to their parents.

We are just like normal farmers, only instead of beef cattle we have dairy cattle. Beef is so highly praised because you can market them and sell them for their meat. I don’t understand why dairy cattle aren’t more highly praised because look at all the great attributions that come from dairy cows. They give you ice cream, milk, cheese, yogurt, meat and so much more. To get people to really understand the dairy industry we need to keep growing as a society and every one of us needs to be an advocate and speak loudly to be heard about dairy farming. I feel strongly for the dairy industry so I advocate it anywhere I go. I will continue to advocate and speak up for the dairy industry as long as I live and until it becomes more globally recognized and taken more seriously than what it is now. People think that we abuse our cattle or that we aren’t doing what is right for the cattle and this is coming from people who have never even stepped foot on a dairy farm.

We need to speak up so that we don’t get trampled into the mud by people who don’t even know what’s going on or how to control it. You have to stand up for what you believe in and what you think is right even if it means that you have to stand alone.

Everyone needs dairy food as it is vital to an individual’s diet. Dairy plays an important role in protecting our body from disease and providing signicant nutrients. Many Americans do not have adequate calcium and vitamin D in their diets. This deciency can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis which will lead to weak bones and poor health. I would encourage everyone, especially the younger generation, to keep dairy in their diet. I realize some may not like to drink milk, but there are other sources, such as cheese and yogurt that are rich in calcium.

Raising dairy princesses Silver-Crest Holsteins is home to outstanding cattle, a pair of royalty

BIG STONE CITY, S.D. – It’s an extraordinary honor for a dairy farm to be the home of a dairy princess. It’s doubly notable when a dairy is the home of two dairy princesses.

Bill and Raynelle Mueller know what it is like to be the parents of a pair of princesses.

Their eldest daughter, Stacy Campbell, served as South Dakota Dairy Princess from September 1999 through March 2001. Their younger daughter, Jenna Buyck, earned the crown as South Dakota Dairy Princess in March 2006.

They gained a love and appreciation for the industry from their dairy upbringing and their parents, who now milk 60 cows on their dairy in Big Stone City, S.D. Given her deep dairy background, it seemed only natural that Stacy would enter the South Dakota Dairy Princess competition when she was a freshman at South Dakota State University (SDSU), where she earned degrees in dairy manufacturing and dairy production.

“Since Stacy was so

young when she was chosen, we were told that she had to be chaperoned at all princess events,” Raynelle said. “Stacy and I had a great time traveling throughout the state while she was princess. She was worried being dairy princess might mean that she wouldn’t be allowed to show dairy cattle.

They said that she could show if she took off the crown while in the show ring. So Stacy showed cattle while Jenna held her crown.”

Even without the crown, Stacy continues work in the dairy industry. She and her husband, Tony, live in Lake Norden, S.D., where they both work at Agropur – Stacy as a lab supervisor and Tony as a drier operator. The Campbells have ve children: Sydney, 14, Grayson, 5, Eva, 3, and twins Aspen and Kye, 1.

Jenna followed her sister to SDSU, where she completed a double major in dairy production and dairy manufacturing, along with a master’s degree in dairy science.

The Muellers’ farm title issues were cleared up in 1994. Bill and Raynelle moved back to their farm and, in the fall of that year, began the construction of a 60-cow tiestall barn. The Muellers did most of the work themselves with assistance from family, friends and neighbors.

“We had 20 head of cows by then and were keeping them at Dad’s farm,” Bill said. “We worked really hard to get the barn completed as quickly as we could. Dad didn’t have enough room to house all of my cows and some of them were standing in a snow bank.”

Raynelle remembers the day they moved into the barn.

“We walked all of our cows right into the new barn with a halter,” Raynelle said. “Everyone was amazed, but that’s how tame our cows are.”

Bill and Raynelle have carefully nurtured the genetics of their registered Holstein herd. Over the years, the Muellers have had numerous animals classied as Excellent. Most recently, their cow Silver-Crest Hero Music received an overall score of 90 EX, with a score of 92 EX on her udder.

Music, who is a direct descendant of the rst 4-H heifer Bill purchased as a teenager, is in her second lactation and is currently giving 140 pounds of milk per day.

Both grew up on small dairy farms and were involved with 4-H. Bill was especially interested in registered Holsteins, buying his rst registered heifer in high school.

In 1972, while he was a student at Southwestern Technical College in Canby, Minn., Bill purchased a 240acre farm located about 1.5 miles from his parents’ farm. Not long after that, Bill and Raynelle began dating.

“Going on a date often meant attending a dairy cattle show,” Raynelle said. “One weekend, Bill and I and another couple drove to New Prague, Minn., to look at the bulls at the Minnesota Valley Breeders Association stud farm.”

Bill and Raynelle were wed in 1975. They named their operation Silver-Crest Holsteins.

Changing seasons leave calves vulnerable to pneumonia Preventing, treating a costly, deadly disease

BARRON, Wis. – With the wild temperature swings happening as winter melts into spring, damp days and chilly nights can wreak havoc on the youngest members of a dairy herd.

Dr. Don Peterson of the Barron Veterinary Clinic in Barron, Wis., has observed signicant increases in pneumonia cases every year in the spring and fall over four decades of practicing food animal veterinary medicine in northwestern Wisconsin.

“Whenever we have severe temperature uctuations all cattle are at more risk, but especially in calves.

Pneumonia is also much more common in the summer if we have sustained temperatures and high humidity,” Peterson said.

Peterson added that, while he couldn’t give an exact percentage as to how many calves die from pneumonia, those that survive the disease will likely have some level of lung damage and will not reach their full genetic potential as milking cows.

“Research has shown time and time again that calves that develop pneumonia grow much more slowly and never meet production expectations. I think every grower realizes this, but what is more evident is that even the slightest bit of lung damage can have this result.

Recommendations are becoming more and more common that if a calf needs to be treated for pneumonia three times, it should be culled,” Peterson said.

But more important than mortality is morbidity, Peterson said.

“We obviously know that our dead calf isn’t going to milk much, but the calf that recovers will have some degree of lung damage. That animal is now going to get fed for about two more years and will not reach maximum productivity.

That cost is more signicant than the loss that occurred when a calf died at a young age,” he said.

controlled, the biggest risk factors for pneumonia that farmers can control are ventilation and housing. Peterson said inadequacy in either one is a problem for cattle of any age. Proper housing includes not overcrowding animals and making sure bedding is clean and dry.

“The one factor that has not changed over time is sanitation and it is more important today than ever as herd sizes have increased. I have yet to see a facility that, over time, has not become overcrowded,” Peterson said.

“Ventilation systems have improved tremendously over the last few years.

Positive pressure tube-type systems have greatly improved, especially calf housing in groups or indoor hutches.

Parasitic factors such as giardia and cryptosporidiosis have become diarrheal disease factors over the last years and again if the calf is in a well-ventilated, clean and dry environment they are usually at much lower risk.”

Pneumonia symptoms in calves may be as subtle as a reduced appetite or change in demeanor, or as obvious as a cough, runny nose and dehydration, or a fever often upwards of 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The key factor in diagnosing pneumonia is catching those early signs that something isn’t right before the calf descends into full-blown respiratory distress, Peterson said.

“Farmers should become quite comfortable in using the simple pinchthe-skin or tenting process (where a dehydrated calf’s skin does not return to normal for more than 10 seconds after being pinched) to evaluate hydration. The newer, longer acting antibiotics are the antibiotics of choice for treatment. They work very well when used judiciously, and we cannot overemphasize enough to follow label directions regarding usage and slaughter times,” Peterson said. “Again, there is so much pressure on animal agriculture and we need to be very careful to maintain a quality meat and milk supply.”

Peterson also added that scours and pneumonia go hand in hand.

“When newborn calves are diagnosed with calf diarrhea, respiratory problems are almost always there at the same time. Hence, when we treat scours

But the symptoms might mean other issues.

“I have seen several times when Salmonella can mimic pneumonia and become very non-responsive to treatment. Regardless of the age of the animal, the key to a successful treatment is early diagnosis,” Peterson said.

As always, the best cure for any disease on a farm is to prevent it altogether through good housing, sound ventilation and solid nutrition. Vaccination is a key tool in the arsenal against many diseases, especially intranasal vaccines at birth to prevent pneumonia and other respiratory disorders, but nutrition and environment must be the rst factors to consider when evaluating pneumonia prevention protocols.

“Newborn calves are almost always the group at most risk, and hence the importance of feeding a gallon of quality colostrum from the dam or a colostrum replacement with 150 grams of immunoglobulin (IgG). Then, the calf needs to be put in a hutch or pen with lots of clean, dry bedding, preferably straw that the calf can nuzzle into,” Peterson said.

He added that, with increased pressure on farmers by consumers and regulating bodies to use antibiotics sparingly, prevention should be priority no. 1 on every farm for all diseases.

“As the consumer is getting more and more concerned about antibiotic usage, the management factors become more important. Great management can always keep antibiotic usage to a minimum,” Peterson said.

Each farmer should look at what vaccination protocols work best for their dairy.

“There are numerous vaccination protocols currently being used depending on each farm situation. We really encourage the use of intranasal respiratory vaccines within the rst few days of birth and again at weaning. We use primarily modied live virus-type vaccines in youngstock and killed in mature cattle,” Peterson said.

But each farm is different and therefore will have different vaccination protocols, he said.

“Proper vaccination and antibiotic treatment protocols are a value for each farm, but nutrition and environment are always the rst factors to consider,” Peterson said.

ISU study nds ROI a challenge for adopting cover crops Despite farmers’ positive perceptions about cover crops and the availability of cost-share programs to incentivize their use, an Iowa State University study shows the return on investment may be the biggest hurdle to overcome for widespread adoption of the practice.

In 2017, Iowa elds planted to cover crops grew to 760,000 acres, with less than half receiving federal or state cost share. But with millions of acres of crops, Iowa — and other Midwestern states — has yet to see widespread adoption of cover crops to reduce nitrates in water from crop elds and to conserve and build healthy soils.

“We have a substantial body of research that shows cover crops have positive long-term benets for water quality, soil health and the environment,” said Alejandro Plastina, assistant professor of economics and extension economist. “Farmers also have positive perceptions about the value of cover crops and can take advantage of costshare programs that incentivize their use.”

“But it’s likely that the number of acres planted won’t substantially scale up if the practice doesn’t at least breakeven in the short term,” he added.

In the study, Plastina and his colleagues calculated annual net returns to cover crop use by analyzing eld data collected through focus groups conducted in Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota; an online survey with responses from 11 states; and a survey mailed to 1,250 farmers in Iowa. Through the survey and

focus groups, conducted in partnership with the Practical Farmers of Iowa organization, the researchers compared each farmer’s costs and revenues from elds where they used cover crops and from elds without cover crops.

Working with Plastina were Fernando Miguez, associate professor of agronomy; Fangge Liu and Wendiam Sawadgo, graduate students in economics; Guillermo Marcillo, graduate student in agronomy; and Sarah Carlson, the strategic initiatives director for Practical Farmers of Iowa.

Using the survey results, the researchers developed partial budgets to evaluate changes in net returns resulting from using cover crops in corn or soybean production.

Overall, the researchers found substantial variability in net returns, driven by the costs of planting and terminating cover crops, feed cost savings from grazing cover crops, cost-share program payments, and the difference in yields obtained in elds with and without cover crops.

“Cost-share payments are a critical incentive to support the practice of cover crops,” Plastina said. “But we found that for most farmers, these payments are insufcient to cover all costs associated with cover crops.”

What can help tilt the balance to a more positive net return?

“We found that farmers who grazed livestock on cover crops or harvested them for forage or biomass generated sufcient additional revenue or cost

savings to result in overall positive returns, in addition to receiving cost-share payments,” Plastina said.

“Promoting the use of cover crops for livestock grazing or forage would help a farmer’s bottom line.”

experiencing,” he said. Also helpful, he added, would be developing improved guidelines to help farmers minimize yield drag on corn and soybeans while containing cover crop planting and termination costs.

“A less sustainable alternative, due to federal and state budget constraints, would be to consider public policies that provide more incentives to adopt cover crops, like more cost-share payments, subsidized seed, discounted crop insurance premiums or tax credits,” Plastina said.

Plastina admitted that partial budgets derived on survey data do not account for long-term soil and water quality benets because no market value exists for soil

health or water quality, and neither does a generally accepted method to value them. But this information still provides valuable insight for farmers and policymakers.

“The calculated returns are based on real eld data, not experimental plots, from row-crop farmers who manage acres with and without cover crops,” he said. “This information can be a useful benchmark for current and potential cover crop adopters. It also can serve as a reference for discussions on future agricultural and conservation policy.”

Plastina is developing a website on the economics of cover crops that will include tools for farmers and others to discern potential costs and benets. The website will include a downloadable spreadsheet with several budget scenarios for cover crops and a simple web-based decision tool to generate estimated net returns to cover crops.

He also continues to conduct research, including an evaluation of the effectiveness of cost-share programs in promoting adoption of cover crops.

A paper on Plastina’s study will be published by the Journal of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

The project was funded by the North Central Region of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) and the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at Iowa State.

Results from forage analysis arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just for ration formulations. The numbers can also help producers adjust management processes to avoid future problems altogether. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The results of forage analysis can be really useful,â&#x20AC;? says notes Bob Charley, Ph.D., Forage Products Management. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For instance, it can show if the crop was harvested correctly or if silages are prone to spoilage.â&#x20AC;?

Dr. Charley advises producers to review these parameters: â&#x20AC;˘ Dry matter (DM): Lower DM levels, especially in alfalfa or other high protein silages, can compound issues like the presence of clostridia from the soil. Lower DM levels also require more acid production and a lower pH for stability. â&#x20AC;˘ pH: Lower pH levels do not necessarily make better quality silage. Forage analysis should show pH stabilization, even if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at achieved at a higher level. â&#x20AC;˘ Ash: Normal levels in the plant should be around six to eight percent, depending on the crop. Higher numbers can indicate slurry contamination.

â&#x20AC;˘ Acid detergent ď&#x192;&#x17E;ber (ADF), neutral detergent ď&#x192;&#x17E;ber (NDF) and lignin: These values should be within average ranges for the type of material harvested. If levels are higher than normal for the crop, it may be a sign the material was more mature than ideal. This can also lead to yeast and mold challenges. â&#x20AC;˘ Crude protein (CP): The higher the protein level, the higher the buffering in the material and the more acid is required to bring the pH down. This can facilitate complications from clostridia. â&#x20AC;˘ Acid Detergent Insoluble Crude Protein (ADICP): High levels of bound protein (ADICP, greater than 10 percent of the CP) show there has been heating in the silage. â&#x20AC;˘ Soluble protein: High levels of soluble protein indicate there has been protein breakdown, also called proteolysis. This can occur due to prolonged wilting in the ď&#x192;&#x17E;eld or inefď&#x192;&#x17E;cient silage fermentation. â&#x20AC;˘ Lactic acid: This is the main driver for pH drop and should be at a reasonably high level for the silage pH to rapidly stabilize. This number can vary with the crop ensiled

Lactic acid levels will be lower in silages treated with inoculants containing Lactobacillus buchneri. It also typically has higher concentrations of acetic acid and lower levels of lactic acid than untreated silage. Acetic acid helps inhibit the growth of spoilage yeasts that are responsible for silage heating.

Klaphake part of champion team The Sauk Centre Streeters celebrated a championship title and an undefeated season after overcoming Roseau 63-52 in the nal game of the Minnesota girls basketball state tournament on March 17 in Minneapolis. Megan Klaphake was a sophomore guard on the team, who was one of the rst players off the bench.

“It feels good to know our hard work paid off,” Klaphake said.

The team nished the season 330.

“It was intense and nerve racking,” Klaphake said about the nal game.

“It was close but [Roseau] put up a good ght. Our defense helped us stay in the game.”

Personally, Klaphake said this has been a year of improvement for her and is already looking forward to next year. With nine out of the 18 players on the team graduating this year, the team has some work ahead of them.

But Klaphake thinks their team will be up for the challenge.

“We have a lot of young girls with potential who will be able to step up and play varsity,” she said.

Klaphake is the daughter of Jim and Carol Klaphake, who milk 50 cows on their dairy near Sauk Centre, Minn.

Sisters share state basketball experience Sisters Courtney and Brittney Dittbenner were able to celebrate together when their Sleepy Eye basketball team took second in the Class A state girls basketball tournament on March 17 in Minneapolis. The two are daughters of Craig and Joleen Dittbenner, who milk 150 cows on their dairy near Sleepy Eye, Minn.

The older of the two sisters, Courtney, is a senior guard.

“It was an amazing experience getting to be up there at state. Pretty

much the whole town was there cheering us on,” said the 18-year-old.

Although the Sleepy Eye team made it to state in the two previous seasons, it did not advance past the quarternals until this year. The team made it to the championship game before being defeated 57-33 by Lyle/ Pacelli and ending their season with a record of 28-6.

Courtney is one of eight seniors on the team and plays off the bench, usually getting into the game about 10 minutes into the rst half.

“I felt I had a good season,” she said. “Coming off the bench was a big deal because we had such a strong team with all our seniors.”

The younger sister, Brittney, did not see as much playing time. The sophomore guard had been brought up to varsity late in the season last year. During that season and into this year, she has fully embraced her role on the team as a scout for the starters.

“We watch the other team’s plays, learn them and help the starters gure out how to play against them,” the 15-year-old said about the strategy they use during practice.

She was excited to be a part of the team to make it to the state championship game.

“It was a really fun season. We have a great group of girls. They’re very talented and passionate about basketball,” Brittney said.

She enjoyed how the community came together during the state tournament.

“Walking out onto the court and seeing a whole sea of orange from our town in the crowd was pretty cool,” she said.

Next year, Brittney hopes the team can repeat the experience and make it to the big tournament.

“We’ve got some big shoes to ll, but we are looking to make it to state again,” she said.

After graduation, Courtney will be attending Southwest Minnesota State University to study exercise science and eventually obtain a career in therapy.

Canadian dairymen explain milk quota system Wisconsin Farmers Union hosts ve meetings around state

DODGEVILLE, Wis. – Imagine being paid $27 per hundredweight (cwt.) for your farm’s milk.

That is the going price in Canada, according to two Canadian dairy farmers, Ralph Dietrich, from Mildmay, Ontario, and Murray Sherk, from Plattsville, Ontario. Dietrich and Sherk were in Wisconsin March 13 through 15 as guests of the Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) to speak at ve meetings around the state. Their basic message was that Canada’s milk supply management, or quota, system is working just ne. As a result, Canadian farmers, they said, sell their milk at prices that are constant and stable.

Darin Von Ruden, WFU president, explained the reasoning behind bringing the Canadian dairymen to Wisconsin.

“Farmers, especially those in corn and dairy, are entering another year of tight margins in a time when they’ve already critically reduced variableinput spending and as many are encroaching on credit limits with their lenders,” he said. “We have been through tough times before.

But something about this stretch feels different. We’re entering the third year of severe price dips in the dairy industry and there doesn’t seem to be any signicant commodity price improvements in the foreseeable future,” he said.

Von Ruden said there is a reason for the low milk price. “[They are the result of] outdated pricing systems that

That is why the WFU wants a new farm bill this year, Von Ruden said. “[New legislation should include] some kind of practical supply management program for the dairy industry,” he said.

And, that program should include both producers and processors.

While Canadian farmers are being paid approximately $27 for their milk, the price is much lower in the United States. The USDA’s Economic Research Service forecasts the all-milk price for 2018 at $15.75 to $16.25 per cwt.

At the WFU meeting March 15 in Dodgeville, Wis., Murray and Sherk, both members of Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO), told an audience of about 60 that Canada’s milk supply management system has three goals. The rst is to make sure farmers receive a fair return, derived completely from the marketplace, on their capital and labor costs. The second is to provide processors with a stable supply of milk so they can properly plan their production year after year. The third is to provide consumers with a consistent supply of milk and

milk products at a fair price.

Sherk described the situation of Ontario dairy farmers 58 years ago, before its quota system.

“In 1960, Ontario milk producer organizations were fragmented and lacked unity in purpose. Their bargaining position in the marketplace was very weak. Returns to the vast majority of milk producers for labor, management and investment were inadequate.

There were numerous inequities and inefciencies in the milk marketing system,” he said.

Because of this, the Ontario government commissioned a study in 1963 to try to solve the problem, Sherk said.

“The answer came in the form of the Milk Act, which was passed in 1965,” he said.

The Milk Act led to the formation of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board (OMMB).

Sherk said the OMMB buys all the milk Ontario farms produce and sells it to processors.

“That board successfully addressed the marketing problems and worked on responding to a continuously evolving set of domestic and international market challenges,” he said. “[Canada’s quota system] provides balance by letting farms act collectively to negotiate a price and adjust milk production

to meet consumer demand,” Sherk said.

Dietrich said three pillars make the supply management system work. These include producer pricing, producer discipline and import control.

Farmers manage marketing boards that have been given their authority by way of laws approved by Canada’s provinces.

All the milk produced in each of the country’s 10 provinces is sold to the provincial board. That board takes care of getting the milk picked up and delivered to processors.

Production and demand are kept in balance, Dietrich said.

At the national level, the amount of milk Canada needs to meet the demand of its own people is calculated and based on butterfat.

This calculation helps avoid overproduction.

Then, a national production quota is issued to all the provinces.

Each province supplies a percentage of the total milk that is needed.

Provinces, in turn, issue quotas for milk production to farmers. A quota exchange lets dairy farmers to buy and sell quota.

Mental, emotional stress part of modern farming Lack of treatment can lead to physical ailments

MADISON, Wis. – Farming is rewarding. It can also be dangerous.

Not all the dangers are physical.

Dr. Kelley Donham is a professor in the department of occupational and environmental health at the University of Iowa. He talked about psychosocial health March 14 during the Professional Dairy Producers Dr. Kelley Donham of Wisconsin University of Iowa ( P D P W ) Conference in Madison, Wis. “I ran over my dad with a manure spreader. That almost killed him,” Donham said.

The accident left a lifelong impression on Donham, who was 15 at the time.

“That really focused my career on the most important two-legged animal on the farm. That’s you,” he said.

His presentation, “Sharpen your mind: Psychosocial health in farming,” looked at preventing stress, coping with it and the results of too much stress.

The veterinarian and farmer touched on some of the issues many

dairy farmers face.

One of those issues is the future of one’s own dairy farm.

Mental and emotional stress, Donham said, can lead to other health problems.

“The soft tissue between our ears is connected to the rest of our whole body,” he said.

Being aware of what’s happening on your farm and in the community is the key to protecting yourself and others from harm.

The numbers show that severe mental illness is rare among active farmers, Donham said. About 5 percent of the general population suffers with clinical depression, but that percentage among farmers is uncertain.

One result of the stress of farming is suicide. Donham said suicide rates might climb during times of crisis.

An example he offered was during the hoof-and-mouth outbreak in Great Britain, when farmers saw their lifetime of dairy cattle breeding wiped out.

But Donham was quick to point out that farming can also be positive for mental health. The exercise, family connections and sense of purpose all factor in. Working with animals, being independent and living on the land are also positive factors.

While a little stress can be good, farming can throw several stressors at people. Among these are the weather, machinery breakdowns, and animal and plant diseases. Three more stressors are issues with younger and older generations, family woes such and death and divorce, and economic problems.

Farming wasn’t always so mentally stressful, Donham said. Many people

Some of Canada’s four classes of milk are set at the world price. On the day of the Dodgeville meeting, Sherk said Canada’s average blend price was about 27 U.S. dollars.

While the provincial milk marketing boards have a big say in the amount of milk farms are allowed to produce, and in the price of that milk, their authority stops there.

That means retailers are free to price the dairy products they offer at whatever prices they wish.

Converting Canadian money into U.S. amounts, and likewise converting metric measurements into U.S. terms, yields a gallon of milk that’s typically priced at about $3.26, Sherk said. A pound of butter typically retails for something in the range of $2.40 to $3.20 per pound.

The amount of quota Canada’s dairy farms are

allowed to own is not stagnant. Rather, it can rise and fall with economic and production conditions. In the last three years, the amount of quota to be divided among farms has grown by 24 percent, Sherk said.

“That means more production at the farm, at stable prices, which means more investment,” he said. “In the last two years, processors have begun and are committed to more than $600 million in new processing capacity.”

Dietrich and Sherk went on to say that supply management keeps the dairy industry stable, so cycles do not exist.

The two offered some comparisons among Wisconsin, Canada and Ontario. They said Wisconsin has 9,500 licensed dairy farms. That is more than the 8,801 the state had on Jan. 1, 2018, according to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture.

Canada, according to the two men, has roughly 11,000 dairy farms, and Ontario has 3,850. When it comes to cows

per farm, the Canadians said Wisconsin has an average of 134. Canada as a whole, they said, has an average herd size of 86, and Ontario’s average herd is 88 cows.

Wisconsin, they said, produces 3.1 billion pounds of milk per year, while Canada produced 20.9 billion pounds, and Ontario accounts for 7 billion pounds.

“Canada’s supply management system provides balance in the dairy sector by enabling Canadian dairy farmers to act collectively to negotiate price and adjust milk production to meet consumer demand. While farmers around the world face unexpected, wild market uctuations, Canadian farmers sell their milk at constant and stable prices,” Sherk said.

As a result, Dietrich added, “Canadian dairy farming is one of the few agricultural sectors that is self-sufcient, providing income security for farmers and requiring no government subsidy. This means Canadian farmers can invest in their farms, communities and Canada.”

When did you know you wanted to be a mechanic and why did you make that career choice? “I knew I wanted to do this since I was little. I always liked to work on stuff and take things apart. I have always enjoyed getting dirty and seeing the end result after I repaired a machine.”

What kind of schooling prepared you for this job? “I went to school at the Staples Vo-Tech for diesel and heavy equipment mechanic training. It was a 15-month program.”

What does a normal work week look like for you? “You never know; it changes depending on the time of year or season. One morning, I might work on one thing; the next morning I might have 10 things I am xing.”

What are your ‘must-haves’ in your work toolbox? “I always need an ‘electronic service tool’ laptop and my multi-meter. After that, I just need basic service tools. These tools help me to diagnose the machine issue.”

What kind of equipment do you typically work on? “I mainly work on tractors – all sizes, skid loaders, choppers and an occasional combine.”

What is the most unique problem you have ever encountered when working on a piece of equipment? “I don’t know about the most unique, but the hardest problems are intermittent problems which I like to call ‘ghosts’. The easier problems are when a machine is just broken.”

My favorite newer pieces are the 380 Row trac because they look cool. It is basically a Magnum with tracks in the back.”

What was the most difcult project you have ever worked on? “One of the most difcult jobs was a Puma tractor where the rear housing failed because of a factory defect. I had to remove

Cook macaroni according to the package directions; drain. Meanwhile, in a large nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth; gradually whisk in cream. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook and stir until thickened, about 2 minutes. Reduce heat; stir in cheese until melted. Add macaroni. Heat and serve.
