Robots reduce their stress

WAVERLY, Iowa – Since giving the responsibility of milking their cows to robots, members of the ten Hoeve family said their stress has been greatly reduced.

“In the past, every single day around the time of milking we were looking in the yard for the cars [of our employees],” Gerben ten Hoeve said. “… Did they show up or not? We don’t have that anymore.”

In November, the ten Hoeve brothers – Gerben and his wife, Julie, and Theo and his wife, Danielle – started using ve double-box Galaxy AMS robots to milk their 625-cow herd on their dairy near Waverly, Iowa.

The ve robots each have two stalls and are placed towards the front of ve separate pens in the ten Hoeves’ existing six-row freestall barn. The system replaces the ten Hoeves’ 12-row swing over parlor.

“Overall, it’s going very well,” Gerben said.

The biggest benet has been reducing the number of employees.

“We were tired of the hired labor,” Gerben said.

Although they had a few good workers, there was a constant worry about people not showing up, giving excuses for getting out of a shift or do-

“We had to police them all the time,” Gerben said. “We even had protocols in place, … but they didn’t want to do it.”

While the ten Hoeves still employ two full-time people, milking with robots has been a lot less stressful than when they were making a schedule for milking in their parlor.

“The few employees we have now are awesome,” Gerben said.

Having robots means consistency

in milking.

“Everything is done the same,” Theo said. “That’s important to us. The cows aren’t stressed.”

This has led to a decrease in mastitis incidences.

“In robots three, four and ve, we haven’t treated a cow yet,” Theo said.

“In robots one and two there have been a couple cows with mastitis, but nothing compared to what we had in the past.”

The herd is averaging 2.8 milkings

made their cows calmer.

“They don’t have to be fetched for milking,” Theo said. “When you enter a pen of cows, they keep laying, eating and drinking.”

They also like that this brand of robots can manage milking fresh cows without a person needing to be there.

“You can just put her in a group and that’s it,” Gerben said. “Of course it would be wise to be there, but you don’t necessarily have to be.”

At rst, the ten Hoeves thought the maintenance of the robots was going to be a challenge. Although there was

a learning curve, the family went through a training session offered by the robot company and learned as they went.

“When you think robots, you think it’s going to be really complicated and only a technical person can do it,” Gerben said. “But this robot is really user friendly. We like the simplicity of this robot and that you can do maintenance yourself.”

Theo agreed.

“It’s not as difcult as I thought it would be,” he said.

This way of milking has been a change from what the ten Hoeves have known.

Gerben and Julie came to the United States from the Netherlands in 2004 and then built a new dairy facility for 120 cows in 2006. Theo and his family moved from the Netherlands in 2008 and joined the operation.

To accommodate another family, the two brothers expanded to 350 cows. In 2016, the ten Hoeves expanded to 650 cows.

In March 2018, the ten Hoeves got the go-ahead from their lender to make the switch to robots.

The transition was easier as they placed the robots into their existing sixrow freestall barn.

By November, the installation was complete. The ten Hoeves hung up the milkers in the parlor and switched on the robots.

“We had a big group of people here helping us,” Gerben said.

For the rst week, each robot had three people constantly working to get the cows pushed through and milked.

The second week, the aid dropped down to two people.

“It was a smooth transition,” Gerben said.

The ten Hoeves are getting used to their new dairy lifestyle.

“Now the biggest stress factor is the milk price,” Theo said.

Even with that stress, they appreciate not having to worry about who is milking the cows.

Rott, Hahn share experiences as heifer raisers

ELGIN, Minn. – Bruce Rott did not want to think about his farm without animals when he decided to hang up the milkers.

“I didn’t need the cows as long as I still had the heifers,” Rott said.

Randy Hahn felt the same way about selling his cows on his dairy near Preston, Minn. That is why the two farmers decided to take the heifer raising route for their post dairy-producing career. While Hahn raises about 300 heifers, Rott has 400 head on his farm near Elgin, Minn.

For Rott, the idea for this enterprise came when he started selling his cull cows to his sister and brother-in-law, Chad and Kindra Carlson, who dairy near Pennock, Minn.

“It wasn’t a nancial thing, it was a time commitment thing and employees,” Rott said about his reason for selling his herd. … “They knew I wasn’t going to keep milking cows. I was struggling with employees at the time, and I knew Mom and Dad were never going to slow down if the

cows were here.”

So, the Carlsons and Rott started talking about future heifer raising options, despite their farms being nearly 200 miles apart.

“At rst it was a little odd,” Rott said about the distance between the locations. “Now it’s not at all.”

Plus, the Carlsons had been sending heifers to North Dakota at the time and this would be a closer option.

For three years, Rott sold cows to the Carlsons and reduced his milking herd; however, numbers on the farm grew as he brought heifers back to his dairy to raise. By 2009, all milking animals were gone.

“It’s busier than I thought it would be, but it’s a lot more exible,” Rott said. “I have more cattle, and I put up more feed and more bedding than I ever did.”

Hahn started his heifer-raising business in 1995. After his sons said they did not want to double the 40-cow milking herd, Hahn thought of this idea.

“So we started the heifer lots,” said Hahn, who eventually sold his milking herd in 2002.

Initially, the Hahns put out a ier to reach potential clients.

“When I sold this program to people, I told them it’s like a marriage between the two farms,” he said. “You can milk a few more cows, and we have a place to take care of the youngstock.”

Hahn also promoted the benets of a dairy farmer not having to provide feed or housing for non-lactating animals along with employees to take care of them.

Their current clients have been with them a combined total of 20 years.

“I think the biggest thing is communication,” Hahn said. “If something happens, I document it. We call them and tell them what’s going on.”

This communication includes the nutritionist and veterinarian the Hahns work with along with the ones their clients work with, too.

“We dictate what we would do for them,” Hahn said. “At that point, they told us what they expected.”

Hahn follows the appropriate schedule, making sure the heifers receive the correct vaccinations, matings and are bred on time.

Rott follows a similar plan with the Carlsons, who verify the vaccination protocol, what matings they want and the breeding age of 13.5 months.

“There’s denitely a checklist,” Rott said.

But Rott said the Carlsons also give him some freedom to raise healthy heifers.

“They initially had seen the springing heifers I brought up to them when I was selling the herd so they were comfortable with the way I was raising them,” Rott said.

Rott also takes care of ushing the higher-end genomic animals for the Carlsons.

Since starting, Hahn has changed the way he charges his clients. At rst, he would buy the heifers and sell them back when they were ready to leave.

“We just about went broke,” he said.

Now, they own no heifers and switched to a per-day rate for each animal.

“They pay monthly and that way when they take them home they don’t have a big bill in front of them,” Hahn said. “In the past

if they came in to take 10-15 head, it bit pretty hard.”

Rott also charges on a perheifer, per day basis. He likes the cash ow aspect about heifer raising.

“I like the set income,” he said. “I’m not at the mercy of the milk price. I know my costs for the most part.”

Having the barns still occupied with animals is another benet along with having hay ground.

“The farm is sloped ground so we’re set up where I can still do strips of hay,” Rott said. “I have twice as much hay now than what I used to have.”

Although he is still tied down to farm and cannot take much time off, Rott likes the change of pace in his career.

“My phone stopped ringing so much,” he said. “I quit going to the chiropractor as much because I wasn’t stressed all the time.”

The weather is a stressor for Hahn on his farm, but working with his dairy farming clients has been one of the best parts, he said. Just as long as there are cattle involved, too.

“I always love my cattle and working with the cattle,” Hahn said. “I just hated to let the cattle go when we quit milking.”

GRO Organic check-off program

Funds to be used for research, promotion, education

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Producers attending the MOSES Organic Conference in La Crosse, Wis., last month learned about the benets and possibilities that voluntary organic check-off programs could bring to the organic sector.

One of the speakers was Melody Meyer of the Organic Trade Association. She shared the idea and philosophy of a voluntary check-off that the OTA is working with called the Generate Results and Opportunity for Organic, and how those dollars are being used to benet organic agriculture production.

GRO Organic is designed to help the organic sector fund research, promote products, educate consumers and provide continuing education and training for both existing and transitioning organic farmers, along with increased technical eld support.

“There is still really broad agreement in the industry that this is needed, that we need more money for research,” Meyer said. “We need to educate the consumer about what organic is because there is a lot

of consumer confusion out there.”

According to Meyer, organic farmers, businesses, retailers and other industry leaders are working on solutions to improve the organic sector of agriculture.

“As a $50 billion industry, we should be able to nd the solutions we need,” Meyer said. “If we’re not going to do it through the USDA, we can do it ourselves.”

Meyer said the year-one focus is to develop a prototype for sustainable and long-term programming, using a three-pronged approach: funding research, doing promotion to educate consumers and creating continuing organic education for producers to help farmers transition and grow organically better.

The OTA is partnering with the Organic Voices campaign to begin work on consumer education and organic promotion. On the research front, they are partnering with NMI to develop strategic insights about how to talk to consumers, particularly the varying age groups and demographics.

“We really want to know what’s making sense with the consumer about competing claims and all the different labels that are out there,” Meyer said. “We want to reinforce the organic brand. With this, we’ll have a tool kit that will be available for all organic businesses to use as guidelines to message to different consumer groups.”

According to Meyer, there is a need for increased technical support in the organic agriculture sector as there are currently two organic specialists in all of the United States employed through NRCS.

“Those positions are funded partially through NRCS and then through matching funds, which typically come from some type of check-off program,” Meyer said. “The hope is that eventually we can start funding those positions.”

Until the time when more of those positions can be funded and created, the focus of the check-off will be placed on creating regional train-the-trainer programs, working with existing and transitioning organic farmers in every state. This will be accomplished by working with the Organic Agronomy Training Series, a collaboratively managed, science-based program.

“We envision these specialists through OATS to be able to talk about weed control, soil health, advising on pest disease, tillage and cover crops,” Meyer said. “All the things people need, but can’t get from their certier.”

Meyer said GRO Organic will be assessing their investment, ensuring the training provided is scalable and has both regional and crop diversity.

“We all know that climate change is our most pressing issue,” Meyer said. “In partnership with the Organic Center, we will be advancing a portfolio on soil health and climate change mitigation. We’ll be gathering together information and doing projects on best practices.”

Some projects will include work in the areas of healthful soils, organic farms and building organic soils, and the impacts of carbon sequestration.

Milk production up 1.3 percent from 2018

Increased output in milk per cow pushed January milk production above January 2018, according to preliminary data in another one of the delayed USDA reports, the January Milk Production report. Output in the top 23 producing states totaled 17.5 billion pounds, up a bearish 1.3 percent from 2018, with the 50-state total, at 18.6 billion pounds, up 0.9 percent. January 2016 was the last time the 50 state total fell below that of the previous year.

Finalized data put total 2018 milk output at 218 billion pounds, up 1.0 percent from 2017. The USDA reported that annual U.S. milk output has increased 15.0 percent from 2009. Cow numbers totaled 9.4 million head, down 0.1 percent from 2017 but they have increased 2.1 percent from 2009. Output per cow averaged 23,149 pounds in 2018, up 235 pounds from 2017, an average that has increased 12.6 percent since 2009, according to the USDA. January cow numbers in the 50 states totaled 9.36 million head, down 83,000 from a year ago, seventh time cow numbers were below a year ago since May 2016. Output per cow averaged 1,988 pounds, up 35 pounds from the year before and the 39th consecutive month of gain.

California output was up 0.8 percent from a year ago, thanks to a 25-pound gain per cow outweighing 8,000 fewer cows. Wisconsin was up 2.9 percent on a 65 pound gain per cow but cow numbers were down 5,000 head.

Idaho was up 3.6 percent, thanks to 10,000 more cows and a 40 pound gain per cow. New York was up 3.4 percent, on a 60 pound gain per cow and 2,000 more cows. Pennsylvania was down for the 11th consecutive month, dropping 5.5 percent on 25,000 fewer cows and 15 pounds less per cow. Minnesota was up 1.6 percent, on a 50 pound gain per cow offsetting 5,000 fewer cows.

Michigan ended six consecutive months of declines, jumping 1.1 percent on a 55 pound gain per cow offsetting 6,000 fewer cows. New Mexico was down 3.5 percent, on a 10 pound drop per cow and 10,000 fewer cows milked. Texans put 77 million pounds more in the tank than a year ago, a 7.3 percent increase, thanks to 18,000 more cows and a 75 pound per cow increase.

Vermont crept up 0.9 percent, on a 45 pound per cow increase offsetting 2,000 fewer cows milked.

Florida was down 4.5 percent on 8,000 fewer cows though output per cow was up 35 pounds. Washington State was up 3.4 percent on a 40 pound gain per cow but cow numbers were down 4,000 head.

Meanwhile; Dairy Market News reports that the number of milk cows in the U.S. on January 1, 2019, totaled 9.35 million head, down 1 percent from the previous year. Milk cow replacement heifers totaled 4.7 million, down 1 percent from the previous year.

The percentage of milk cow replacement heifers per 1,000 milk cows on January 1, 2019 was 50.3, down 1 percent from the previous year. Milk cow replacement heifers expected to calve during the year totaled 3.01 million head, down 1 percent from the previous year.

With preliminary data showing January 50-State milk output at 18.6 billion pounds, up 0.9 percent, the March 14 Dairy Products report shows where it went.

January cheese output totaled 1.1 billion pounds, up 0.7 percent from December and just 0.4 percent above January 2018.

Wisconsin contributed 278.7 million pounds of that total, down 0.7 percent from December and 4.0 percent below a year ago. California produced 214.0 million pounds, down 3.3 from December and 1.3 percent below a year ago. Idaho provided 86.7 million pounds, up 1.8 percent from December and 1.5 percent above a year ago. Minnesota, with 65.3 million, was down 0.4 percent from December but 5.5 percent above a year ago. New Mexico produced 80.0 million pounds, up 16.4 percent from December and 17.1 percent above a year ago.

Italian cheese totaled 480.7 million pounds, up 0.3 percent from December but 1.3 percent above a year ago. Mozzarella, at 379.3 million pounds, was up 3.3 percent from a year ago.

American type cheese totaled 438.7 million pounds, up 3.2 percent from December and 1.2 percent above a year ago.

Cheddar, the cheese traded at the CME, totaled 322.6 million pounds, up 15.7 million pounds or 5.1 percent from December and 4.3 million or 1.4 percent above a year ago.

U.S. churns gave us 189.9 million pounds of butter, up 17.9 million pounds or 10.4 percent from November and 7.7 million pounds or 4.2 percent above a year ago.

Yogurt output hit 384.1 million pounds, up 5.1 percent from a year ago.

Dry whey totaled 81.2 million pounds, down 10.1 percent. Dry whey for human consumption totaled 79.7 million pounds, up 8.9 percent from December but 9.5 percent below a year ago. Dry whey stocks totaled 78.7 million pounds, up 20.8 percent from December but 11.6 percent below those a year ago.

Nonfat dry milk production totaled 172.7 million pounds, up 21 percent from December and 7.7

percent above a year ago. Stocks climbed to 283.6 million pounds, up 8.9 million pounds or 3.2 percent from December but are 23.4 million pounds or 7.6 percent below the 2018 level.

Skim milk powder totaled 30.4 million pounds, down 40.1 percent from December and 33.5 percent below a year ago.

The Agriculture Department again lowered its 2019 milk production estimate in the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, blaming smaller expected dairy cow numbers.

2019 production and marketings were estimated at 219.7 and 218.8 billion pounds respectively, down 400 million pounds on output and down 300 million on marketings. If realized, 2019 production would still be up 2.2 billion pounds or 1.0 percent from 2018.

The fat basis export forecast was reduced on slower expected sales of butterfat due to increased global competition. Skim-solids basis exports were lowered on expected strong competition in international skim milk powder markets and slower expected demand for whey products. The fat basis import forecast was lowered slightly while the skim-solids basis import forecast was unchanged.

Annual product price forecasts for cheese, butter, nonfat dry milk were raised from the previous month, but the whey price forecast was reduced slightly.

The Class III milk price was raised, based on a higher cheese price projection more than offsetting the lower whey price. Look for a 2019 average of around $15.20 per hundredweight, up 15 cents from the Department’s last estimate and compares to $14.61 in 2018 and $16.17 in 2017.

The Class IV forecast was increased on higher forecast butter and nonfat dry milk prices. It’s projected at around $16.10, up 22 cents from the last projection and compares to a $14.23 average in 2018 and $15.16 in 2017.

This month’s 2018/19 U.S. corn outlook is for lower use for ethanol, reduced exports, and larger stocks. Corn used to produce ethanol was lowered 25 million bushels to 5.55 billion. Exports were reduced 75 million bushels to 2.375 billion, reecting diminished U.S. price competitiveness and expectations of increased exports for Brazil and Argentina. With no other use changes, ending stocks were raised 100 million bushels to 1.835 billion. The season-average corn price received by producers was lowered 5 cents at the midpoint to $3.55 per bushel.

U.S. soybean supply and use changes included higher crush and lower ending stocks compared with last month’s report. Soybean crush was raised 10 million bushels to 2.1 billion on higher domestic disappearance of soybean meal and a lower soybean meal extraction rate. Soybean stocks were projected at 900 million bushels, down 10 million from last month.

The season-average soybean price range forecast of $8.10-$9.10 per bushel was unchanged at the midpoint. Soybean oil and meal prices were also unchanged at 28.5 to 31.5 cents per pound and $295 to $335 per short ton, respectively.

Midwestern cheesemakers continue to report seasonally quiet orders, according to Dairy Market News, and some expect the lull to continue through the month. Contacts relay that their milk suppliers, smaller dairy farms, experienced barn collapses due to excess snow-builds. Cows on those farms were being relocated but milk remains available and continues 50 cents to $2 under Class.

A number of local cheesemakers say their inventories are manageable, as they have maintained limited production schedules however, some report recent upticks regarding production and expect it to continue forward as demand will pick up in the early spring.

Western cheese production is active as parts of the region have increasing milk output. Inventories are heavy and processors want to keep them in check.

Demand is strong from domestic retail outlets and a few export channels.

Cash butter hit $2.2850 per pound Thursday, then backed down to close Friday at $2.28, up 1 1/4-cents on the week and 7 cents above a year ago, with 5 sales for the week.

Midwest churns remain very active and plant managers relay cream continues to roll in, including additional loads from the West. Inventories are building.

Western cream supplies are solid but not overbearing. Cream itemsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; production for the upcoming holiday is picking up. Food service and restaurant butter orderings are lagging a bit due to cooler weather conditions.

Grade nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 96 3/4-cents per pound, down three quarter-cents on the week but 27 3/4-cents above a year ago, with 10 carloads switching places.

The now one year old spot dry whey market closed the week at 32 cents per pound, down 2 cents on the week but 2 3/4-cents above a year ago, with 11 carloads ď&#x192;&#x17E;nding new homes on the week.

Are CME prices a result of the global dairy market or domestic demand? HighGround Dairy (HGD) Director of Dairy Market Intelligence Lucas Fuess said in the March 18 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dairy Radio Nowâ&#x20AC;? broadcast that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little of both.

Cheese was the only dairy commodity where U.S. disappearance grew higher versus the prior year in December, he said. However, good disappearance earlier in the year across all other commodities, in some cases export driven, was enough to push total 2018 disappearance stronger year over year across all commodities. Total cheese disappearance was up versus the prior year for the third consecutive month, up 1.1 percent from 2017, according to Fuess.

Sharply higher butter disappearance in October and November did not carry over into December, he said, with total disappearance down 7.1 percent and marked the lowest December butter disappearance since 2012.

Domestic nonfat dry milk-skim milk powder disappearance was exceptionally sluggish, down 18.4 percent in 2018 for the lowest domestic disappearance in a calendar year since 2000, according to Fuess, and dry whey slipped lower in December, the sixth time in seven months, unable to continue Novemberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know that the food system is in a dangerous predicament,â&#x20AC;? Milk markets continue to struggle with gaining traction for any sort of momentum in a price recovery. Block cheddar prices are forming a $1.52-1.61 price range, with barrels dropping as low as $1.36 in recent price weakness and struggling to trade above $1.50. Class III futures are spending most of their time trading between $15-15.50 in the front half of 2019.

USDA is trying to catch up with releasing reports missed during the government shutdown. The January Manufacturers Dairy Ending Stocks report showed all categories of dry milk product inventories starting the year in a range similar to the prior three year averages. This should be construed as somewhat supportive at current whey and nonfat dry milk prices.

Butter production has been stronger than normal due to high butterfat tests in milk. Although concerning, butter inventories are not overly burdensome.

Cold storage cheese inventories remain the area of biggest concern for milk markets as record large supplies continue to limit price improvement. World cheese values are trending higher, which should support improved U.S.

export demand, but with a strong dollar and tariffs still hanging over the market higher prices are still limited fundamentally.

Grain prices saw a late winter sell off as South America weather improved, providing a good opportunity for livestock producers to extend corn and meal coverage.

Traders will start to turn their attention to planting progress and spring weather. Corn will need to see a sharp jump in acres to keep carryout supplies from declining further.

South America has been receiving good rains in dry areas. For late planted crops yields will see a dramatic improvement from earlier estimates. This will keep a lid on any soybean rallies and will likely lead to lower lows being made in futures trading as the old crop marketing year advances. Look for the possibility of a one billion plus bushel soybean carryout becoming reality.

Strickley Farm’s rendition of sustainability Robinson family committed to dairy, environment

OLD HUTTON, Kendal, Cumbria, England – James Robinson’s ancestors have been caretakers of the family’s land for 144 years and in doing so have fullled their epitome of tradition.

“I like being able to work with cows,” James said, a fthgeneration dairyman. “I’m a cow man. I’d rather spend all day with a cow than sit in the tractor for one hour. I like being able to take a cow from service right through to the calf being born to it maturing, growing and servicing it and seeing a calf out of it for the rst time … and knowing we’ve been pedigree for over 100 years.

All my ancestors have done the exact same thing. Some of these cow families go back to my great-great-grandfather.”

James and his wife, Michelle, and their two sons, Robert, 15, and Chris, 13, as well as James’ parents, Henry and Kathleen Robinson, own and operate Strickley Farm, an organic dairy operation, in

Old Hutton, Kendal, Cumbria, England.

The family milks 120 Milking Shorthorns twice a day in a double-12 herringbone parlor equipped with DeLaval data collection.

“The parlor is fairly well automated, but it is nice and simple to work in,” James said.

Michelle works off the farm as a part-time teacher while Henry helps James full time in the day-to-day operations. Kathleen manages the farm’s paperwork, and Robert helps with night milking.

“It is denitely a family business,” James said.

Strickley Farm is also a member of a Natural England Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, which encourages conservation and promotes school visits. Each year, the Robinsons host 25 school visits ranging in topics from the dairy to wildower studies, soils and animal habitat.

We are very keen on doing visits. … This is very much our story to tell, and we should be the ones telling it.”

The family raises 130 youngstock, which are fed whole milk and housed in groups. James said because his farm is organic, they are

required by law to use group housing for youngstock.

“Calves over 1 week have to be housed in at least pairs,” he said. “Virtually anyone on a supermarket contract are stipulated to group housing. … The norm now in terms of welfare of the cow is not just the health but some of it is being able to display natural behaviors.”

“We are always doing something, always trying to move forward and modernize slowly,” James said, who also built two silage pits in 2017. “Being we are a family farm, there is never any massive changes. We sort of do bits when we can.”

All the manure is spread on the farm’s grassland.

“The organic system is very much being able to farm within your means,” James said. “You can only grow a certain amount of grass, can only keep a certain amount of slurry from a certain amount of stock. It’s kind of a nice cycle all around.”

While the Robinsons have been farming the land since 1875, they converted to organic production in 2006.

“We made the switch for a better milk price,” James said. “Before, we were at 90-100 cows, which meant we were really struggling. The milk price for conventional was way down. … The way we were farming was almost organic anyways so it wasn’t a huge step for us to go organic. Management wise, organic has really suited us as well as the kind of cattle we have. The rainfall we get suits that type of farming.”

After purchasing a neighboring farm last year, Strickley Farm is now comprised of 300 acres.

“We were lucky to buy the farm next door,” James said. “That’s the only

land that has come up for sale near us in 50 years. If you want to expand, you are going to really struggle unless you are going to rent because of the amount of family farms, and family farms tend to hold on to farms for the next generation.”

The milking herd grazes for at least six months; otherwise, they are fed a concentrated feed, grass, silage and barley and pea whole crop silage.

James said the cattle also graze on root crops late into the autumn.

“We manage very well for growing our forages because of the high rainfall,” James said of the area’s annual 55 inches of precipitation. “Farmers are always complaining about the weather, but we wouldn’t be able to grow the grass we do without the rain.”

Because of the ample grassland, James said the area is teaming with various agricultural operations such as sheep, dairy and beef. He also said dairy herd sizes are growing larger, 200 to 300 cows, while dairy herd numbers are diminishing.

“We have good public support for dairying in our area because there are lots of family farms,” James said.

“People in the villages have grown up on family farms so we have good rural support. But, there is still that massive divide between consumers, in London Turn to ROBINSON | Page 16

Adding to the woes of the global dairy industry is the uncertainty of the United Kingdom’s place in the worldwide dairy market. The British Members of Parliament have twice postponed a decision on how the United Kingdom should leave the European Union.

“If there is a no deal, it would be catastrophic for farming in this country,” James said. “Our cooperative exports 20 percent of their milk volume, and … we could be without exports and high tariffs when it does get to its destination anyways. The most annoying thing is we can’t do anything about it at all. All we can do is try to keep a healthy business. We still have to do our eld work, plant seeds, A.I. cows and milk every day. We can’t assume the world is going to end if it’s a no deal. We have to hope they’ll get themselves sorted out.”

The 300 acres which comprise Strickley Farm are broken into mulƟple small elds, each with a long length of boundary between which, when looked at as a whole, could be compared to a patchwork quilt thread throughout the rolling landscape.

James said the area is widely known for its drystone walls – 6-foot high walls made of stone from the elds and constructed without the use of cement – and also hedgerows, which serve as a type of living boundary. Both forms of boundary are centuries old and need maintenance to adhere to their purpose.

Strickley Farm has 6.5 miles of hedgerow, 4.5 miles of drystone wall, as well as an ancient hay meadow and oak woodland, pond and 4 acres of species rich moss.

According to the Campaign to Protect Rural England, hedgerows are the most widespread semi-natural habitat in England and are criƟcal to the existence of plants and animals.

Every 20 to 25 years, the hedgerows need laying – a regional-variated craŌ where one bends and parƟally cuts through the stems of a line of shrubs or small trees to allow the hedge to grow horizontally and intertwine – to bring new, vigorous growth. Hedgelaying is typically completed between the end of October and the end of March, avoiding frosty weather.

“This is extremely Ɵme consuming and labor intensive, but it’s a tradiƟonal craŌ which we very much enjoy doing,” James said.

James said the Ɵme required to hedge varies, but, for example, they once completed 360 feet of hedgelaying in 175 hours, compleƟng a liƩle over 3 feet per 1.5 hours.

“The hedgerows are my favorite,” he said.

“They support a huge amount of biodiversity as well as providing much needed shelter from the wind and rain.”

Karszes gives tips for protability during PDPW conference

MADISON, Wis. – What separates the top 20 percent of dairy farms from the remainder of their peers?

Jason Karszes, senior Extension associate with the PRO-DAIRY program at Cornell University, shared insights he has gained from studying New York dairy farms with those in attendance at his presentation at the PDPW Business Conference March 13-14 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. Karszes has worked with the same 128 dairies during the Dairy Farm Business Summary and Analysis project.

“When we look at performance, we don’t want to make decisions on any given day, week, month or year,” Karszes said. “We know the dairy industry cycles and changes. We are trying to look at our data over a longer time frame.”

Karszes said when they are evaluating the numbers and data that come in from these farms, they split the top 20 percent from the remainder and look at what is being done differently between farms in those two segments.

“Some of the farms that were originally in the top 20 percent aren’t any longer,” Karszes said. “Depending on what decisions were being made, they

might go up or they might go down.”

Over the six years, the average herd size of the 128 herds has increased from about 700 cows to 900 cows. The average milk production has gone up from 25,570 pounds per cow to 26,050

pounds. The feed and crop expense per hundredweight of milk has decreased from $8.41 to $7.20.

Labor efciency has increased, with the average number of cows per farm worker going from 44.1 to 47.1 cows. With that increase in labor efciency, however, has come an increase in labor costs, rising from approximately $37,000 per hired worker to $42,500.

“Minimum wage is going up, and in New York we’ll probably soon have to worry about overtime costs,” Karszes said. “For a lot of years, our dairies were relatively unchanged on labor efciency, but the last two years it’s become a big concern that we are starting to changes on the farm to try and address that.”

The total cost of producing 100 pounds of milk on these New York farms has gone down slightly, from $19.15 per hundredweight in 2012 to $18.99 in 2017. However, during that same time period, the net milk price received per hundredweight has decreased $1.55, going from $18.94 in 2012 to $17.39 in 2017. The net milk price has only been above the total cost of production twice in the six-year time period: being over by 57 cents in 2013 and by $3.42 in 2014.

Overall farm capital per cow has increased nearly $2,000, rising from $10,291 in 2012 to $12,184 in 2017.

14.1 percent in 2014 and a low point of 1.2 percent in 2015.

In contrast to the overall average return on capital without appreciation of all 128 farms, when the top 20 percent (26 farms) are segregated from the remaining 80 percent, the top 20 percent dropped from 10.1 percent in 2012 to 6 percent in 2017, with a high of 18.6 percent in 2014 and a low of 3.8 percent in 2016.

The remaining 80 percent dropped from 4.4 percent in 2012 to 2.4 percent in 2017, with a high year of 12.1 percent in 2014 and a low year of -0.2 percent in 2015.

Despite those numbers, the overall average farm net worth on these farms has risen from $5 million to over $7.5 million.

“What is the difference between these farms?”

Karszes said. “This is where we got to the top 20 percent versus the remaining 80 percent. One thing we always want to remember is that every decision we make on the farm impacts the protability equation in some form. We need to know what that means to our earnings and our rate of returns as we move ahead.”

In the equations Karszes uses to determine prot and protability, where prot equals volume times price minus cost, and protability is determined by

dividing that result by the investment.

The top 20 percent had a higher investment per cow at an average of $7,233 compared to an average investment per cow of $5,868 in the remaining 80 percent. Farm capital per cow in the top 20 percent has increased from $9,543 in 2012 to $11,809 in 2017, while farm capital per cow in the remaining 80 percent has increased from $10,531 to $12,379.

“When we see this, it’s a very interesting question coming from my side,” Karszes said. “What are these farms doing? Investment is one of the key things. We are starting to see more conversations on management practices.”

Karszes said the most protable farms invested more money into their farms than the remaining 80 percent.

“To sum it up, the top 20 percent did about $7,200 of reinvestment,” Karszes said. “That’s machinery, land, implements, land, expansion cows, whatever the capital investment is to be appreciated.”

Karszes urges producers to think in terms of replacement versus enhancement when reinvesting into their farms.

“If all our investments are done on replacement only, our cost structure is probably going to go up,”

Karszes said. “If we get enhancement of some aspect of the business, hopefully we have more dollars somewhere to offset that.”

When talking to the top 20 percent about farm enhancements, can labor efciency be increased by the labor hour to accomplish more things with better tools? Can making this investment increase cost efciencies? Can the amount of milk per cow be increased?

Karszes said that size and growth is driving the gross revenue on these farms. The top 20 percent grew an average of 38.5 percent, increasing from 1,094 cows to 1,515 cows. The remaining 80 percent grew an average of 23.2 percent, increasing from 604 cows to 744. Production on the top 20 percent of farms saw an increase of 0.4 percent while the remaining 80 percent increased by 2.5 percent.

Karszes said no one strategy for protability will work for all farms as every farm is different and can take varying approaches provided they keep the profitability equation in mind. And, just as importantly no one strategy is guaranteed to work forever, rather avoiding stagnation is the key.

MADISON, Wis. – After two near-misses of his own, and learning the stories of other accidents and fatalities that occurred around silage piles, Dr. Keith Bolson, of Kansas State University, has become passionate about silage safety.

He urged producers and dairy workers to exercise caution during his presentation at the PDPW Business Conference March 13-14 in Madison, Wis. “Silage safety is serious business,” Bolson said. “Silage is 365 days a year. Someone on every dairy in Wisconsin fed silage this morning.”

Farmers in Wisconsin put up over twice as much silage each year as the next closest state, which Bolson said makes silage safety that much more important in America’s Dairyland.

To help create awareness of safety practices to use near silage, Bolson and his wife Ruthie launched the Dr. Keith Bolson Silage Safety Foundation at the World Dairy Expo. As part of the work of their foundation, they have created a booklet entitled “Silage Safety 101,” available in both English and Spanish versions.

During that same World Dairy Expo when the Bolsons launched their foundation, a dairy farmer was nearly overcome by silo gas, only 20 miles away from the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Bolson said the incident drove home the importance of what they want to accomplish with their foundation. The foundation’s goal is for everyone involved in a silage program on farms, dairies, feedlots and other livestock operations to return home to his or her family safely every day.

“I missed my rst silage wake-up call on June 16, 1974,” Bolson said. “I lost ngers in a blower lling silo. But, I didn’t get it. I didn’t talk about silage safety. On Oct. 12, 1992, we were lling a bale bunker to show Kansas beef producers what they were losing in silage shrink by using big round bales as bunker walls. I was … packing along the wall when a bale slipped out. The tractor went to about 60 degrees. If that bale would have gone out another 5 feet, I’d have been involved in a tractor roll-over.”

According to Bolson, silage-related tragedies do not discriminate. They have no boundaries when it comes to age, race or position on the farm.

“Accidents are caused by unsafe behavior or conditions caused by the actions of people,” Bolson said. “No one has ever stepped over a PTO shaft; walked up to a silage feed-out face that you couldn’t reach the top of; ever moved a forage harvester without honking three times, right?

We’re not going to create a safety bubble. What we can do is put guidelines in place to signicantly reduce the chance of having a serious injury or fatality.”

Bolson urges all facilities that feed silage to have silage safety protocols that are clear and consistent, explaining the right and wrong methods.

“Injury-related statistics suggest that employees do not consistently follow the recommended safety guidelines,” Bolson said.

Silage accidents are typically caused by things such as fatigue, complacency, truck or tractor rollover, being run over by machinery or equipment, entanglement, fall from heights, buried by silage avalanche and silo gas.

Forage-harvesting is often fraught with long hours and exhausting work conditions and frequently has added stress from weather conditions.

Bolson encourages a large enough harvesting team to safely perform the tasks needed, while allowing for adequate breaks and rest. He cautions that even the best workers can become frustrated with malfunctioning equipment, poor weather conditions or other hazards and make poor judgements that could end tragically.

Use of rollover protective structures is a must when packing silos. Bolson warns to never ll a bunker silo higher than the top of the wall, helping to eliminate the risk of a straight drop off.

He also advocates for the use of sight rails on above-ground bunker walls. Pack tractor operators should form a progressive wedge of forage, providing a minimum slope of 1 to 3 for pushing and packing. Tractors should always be backed up steep slopes to prevent rollbacks.

Machinery guards and shields should always be kept in place to protect workers from rotating shafts, chain and v-belt drives, gears and pulleys and rotating knives on harvesting equipment, wagons and feeding equipment. Non-working bystanders, especially children, should never be allowed near harvesting, transporting, packing or feeding operations.

To prevent a fall from heights, standard guardrails should be installed on above-ground bunker silo walls. Care should be taken when removing coverings near the edge of the feed-out face. Bolson cautions workers to never stand closer to the edge of the feed-out face than the height of the silage. He also recommends the use of a safety harness, tethered with a heavy rope or cable.

Silage avalanches are unpredictable and have no warning signs. It is not uncommon on large dairies for silage piles and bunkers to be 18 to 24 feet high. People should never be allowed to approach the feed-out face, and should never stand closer to the feed-out face than three times the height of the silage. Suffocation is the primary cause of death in a silage avalanche accident, so Bolson encourages workers to always use the buddy rule, never working alone in a bunker or near a pile. Silage sample should never be taken from the feed-out face, but should be taken from the loader bucket a safe distance from the silage.

Children should never be allowed to play on or near a bunker or silage pile.

Bolson recommends having safety meetings, including with those employees that do not usually work in silage areas, and enforcing a zero-tolerance policy in regards to compliance with protocols. All family members, including children, should be made aware of the dangers of silage bunkers, piles and silos. Warning signs should be posted in the silage area, and workers should be issued safety vests that t properly.

“We have nothing to lose by practicing safety,” Bolson said. “But, we have everything to lose by not practicing it.”

Previous candidates are also eligible and are encouraged to participate. Dairy Ambassadors are between the ages of 13-17. This program is open to both young ladies and men. Dairy Maids must be 11 or 12 years old. They are eligible and encouraged to participate for both years.

Scholarship money will be given to princesses willing to participate in a certain number of events.

As dairy farmers struggle with large replacement heifer inventories and corresponding low prices, breeding dairy heifers and cows to beef bulls could be a step toward improved protability, according to Dr. Brad Heins, University of Minnesota associate professor of dairy management. But, making that move requires a variety of decisions, most without solid research to smooth the way.

Heins was a presenter in a U of M Extension Dairy Genetics Webinar March 15. He identied unknowns surrounding beef on dairy breeding, such as which breeds complement each other, what sires produce the right results, which feed rations work best and how the move will affect the beef markets.

He estimated 5 percent of the U.S. dairy herd is being bred to beef, with most of those to Angus or Limousin. He said articial insemination companies are trying to provide matings for beef sires and dairy breeds, but a dairy farmer needs to evaluate his market for that beef to help him make decisions.

“I’ve worked a lot with beef breeds for dairy cattle,” said Heins, who conducts research at the U of M West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, Minn. “I think the main thing is we want to select bulls … that provide a great carcass in the end. Black may be good, but is that really the right answer? Maybe, maybe not. It depends what the market might be.”

Heins also recommended thinking with a feedlot mentality because most of those crossbred calves will likely end up in a Midwestern feedlot.

At WCROC, research has produced data showing bull calves from crosses to beef do better than Holstein steers for carcass weight and pay a premium of as much as $50. At the same time, milk production from the heifers from those crosses does not suffer.

But even a premium for beef on dairy crosses could be in jeopardy if more are produced, because buyers may be more selective and those additional animals might put pressure on the beef market, Heins said.

“Crossbred calves need to be competitive,” he said. “They need the same excellent care so you can sell an animal at seven days that’s healthy, vigorous and ready to go.”

At WCROC, the 300-cow dairy herd is generating 115 to 150 heifer calves per year with no sexed semen used. The herd uses crossbreeding with Holstein, Montbéliarde, Viking Red, Normande and Jersey. Forty cows were bred with Limousin and Limex (Limousin and Angus or Red Angus) bulls to end the breeding season. Data gathered may be useful in getting more information for beef on dairy crosses.

While Heins shared data between breeds on traits such as birth weight, marbling, ribeye area, fat thickness and carcass, he said dairy farmers who have been selling animals from beef bulls should share their data with U of M researchers. Information such as yearling weight, carcass weight, feed intakes and birth weight would help develop guidelines for breeding dairy animals to beef.

“Most of us are trying to get more data,” he said.

“Is there anyone to turn to that wants to collect that data if there are enough of these animals going through the system?”

Ideally, Heins would like a sire index that prioritizes bulls for breeds based on enough animals going through the marketing system.

He also sees the need for understanding the consumer market more fully to avoid giving WHO a product that will not sell well.

And nally, Heins suggests dairy farmers think about genomic testing their animals and considering whether it is a good genetic strategy to breed the low end of the herd to beef so they do not contribute to the dairy herd.

Mix together crushed pretzel, chopped pecans, brown sugar and melted butter. Spread on large ungreased baking sheet with sides. Bake at 400 degrees for 7 minutes. Allow mixture to cool and then break it into small pieces.

Set aside. Beat together softened cream cheese, granulated sugar and vanilla.

Fold in the Cool Whip. Cover and store in the fridge. Before serving, fold in the diced strawberries, sugared pretzels and pecans into the cream cheese mixture.

Beat cream cheese and peanut butter until smooth. Mix in the vanilla. Beat in powdered sugar until smooth. Fold in the Butterfingers. Fold in Cool Whip.

Bowtie chicken alfredo 12 ounces Bowtie pasta 4 Tbsp. butter 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts Salt and pepper to taste 2 cloves garlic, minced 3/4 cups dry white wine (may substitute chicken broth)

1/2 cup half and half 3 Tbsp. heavy cream 1 pkg. white mushrooms Chicken broth, as needed for thinning 3/4 cup grated parmesan 2 Tbsp. parsley

Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Salt and pepper both sides of the chicken breasts. Heat 2 Tbsp. of butter in large skillet over medium high heat. Add chicken and cook until done. Remove from skillet, slice into strips and set aside. Add additional 2 Tbsp. of butter to the skillet, followed by minced garlic. Stir the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Pour in the wine then let it bubble up and reduce for 2 minutes. Add half and half, cream, salt and pepper, whisking constantly until it is all combined. Then add the fresh mushrooms. Allow liquid to heal up and thicken for a few minutes. If it gets too thick you can thin with broth. When sauce looks good, remove from heat. Add parmesan, then pasta and chicken.

In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugars, baking soda and salt. In another bowl, whisk the egg, buttermilk and oil; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Pour into a greased 9-inch round or square baking pan (pan will be full).

Bake at 425 degrees until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 20-25 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Serve warm.

In a small bowl, combine sour cream and garlic salt; spread on one side of each slice of bread. In another small bowl, combine tuna and mayonnaise; spread on four slices of bread. Top with cheese and remaining bread; gently press together.
