Roden’s off-the-farm job supports start-up dairy
A woman on a mission

BROWERVILLE, Minn. – Even as a young girl, Marissa Roden knew she wanted to dairy farm. But when Roden came closer to achieving that goal, she realized the only way she could milk cows was to nd another stream of income. “It wasn’t my intent to get a full-time job, but if I wanted to milk cows I knew I needed a job,” Roden said. The 25-year-old milks 30 Jerseys on a rented farm site in Todd County near Browerville. She also holds a fulltime job as a large animal nutritionist for Purina Animal Nutrition. Days are busy and go by quickly as Roden balances the two careers. She begins her days at 3:30 a.m. and starts morning chores by 4. In a short three

To help support her dairying venture, the 25-year-old also works full Ɵme as a large animal nutriƟonist. hours, Roden needs to be on her way to the cooperative after having milked the cows and fed the youngstock. “I spend all day making farm calls, and then by 5 p.m. I head back to the farm for evening chores,” Roden said. “Every day ends with ration work at night. Then, on the
weekend, I spend Saturday in the barn and try to rest on Sunday.” Roden uses her paid time off when chores run behind in the morning or the veterinarian makes a stop. She also enjoys taking time to participate in regional dairy shows. “My co-workers have
been really good about this,” Roden said. “We’re all in agriculture. They know stuff comes up on the farm that I have to take care of.” The hard work of dairying in this manner does not faze Roden. She grew up on her parents’, Thomas and Melody’s, dairy farm near Hen-
ning. And, she has watched her older stepsister, Mindy Meyer, dairy near Clarissa. Throughout her school years, Roden held down multiple jobs, at a gas station, on a dairy farm and at a veterinary clinic. Then, she completed a four-year degree in three years by taking a semester of college while nishing her senior year of high school. “Since high school I wanted to farm,” Roden said. “With determination and hard work you can accomplish your goals.” Roden purchased her rst cows in 2008. While her parents still farmed, Roden kept the herd of three on the home farm. Then, as the herd grew and Roden’s parents left the industry, she relocated her animals to area farm sites. In May 2018, Roden received nancing to purchase 20 cows in addition to the 15 heifers she had at her parents’ farm. “I had to go to three banks before someone thought it could work for me,” Roden said. “All my papers showed how I could turn a prot, but they still said no. a big deal,” Roden said. “In two years I’ll have all the cattle paid off. Then, I can start looking for a place of my own.” The young dairy farmer also rents a house nearby and purchases all her feed. She works with other area farmers to haul manure off the property and for them to use it as fertilizer. This summer, Roden plans to paint the barn walls and clean out the water lines. She will also take stall mats from her parents’ place and add them to the Browerville farm to improve cow comfort. The dairywoman’s afnity for the Jersey cow began when she was lit-

For as long as she can remember, Roden and her stepsister have been active in the showring with Jerseys. “What I look for in Jerseys is udder, body depth and feet and legs,” she said. “That’s what I base my breeding decisions on.” Roden hopes to one day have a herd renowned for their genetics and quality animals that can compete with the top 10 of their class at World Dairy Expo. “I’ve always loved raising animals and seeing a new calf’s potential turn into something great,” she said. “And part of that is management and who you work with.” To achieve Roden’s goals, she works closely with her veterinarian, the land’s agronomist and uses her experience as a nutritionist to provide optimum care for her herd. “I do all of my own ration work,” she said. “I’m not quite to my goals, but I’m happy with where I’m at and where I’m going.” Getting to this point has not been easy. Roden admits she had her doubts about investing in the dairy industry, and there are people who have not supported her decisions. But even on the most difcult days, Roden thinks back to the little girl she once was and the dreams she envisioned for herself. “I’m really proud of myself. I’ve come a long ways, and when I talk with others in the industry, I know why I’m doing this,” Roden said. “In the future, I think I’ll look back and think, ‘Yes, I was 25, but OK, now what’s my next goal?’”

Not having a place for my milk was my original fear, but it turned out to not be

Venteichers install robotic feeding system

STRAWBERRY POINT, Iowa – A delay in approval for a loan was exactly what Honey Creek Dairy near Strawberry Point, Iowa, needed. It gave Dan Venteicher and his brother, Don, a chance to rethink how their new automated feeding and milking system should be designed. Eight weeks into using three Lely A5 robotic milkers and a Vector feeding system, Venteicher said he is pleased. “I’m pretty happy,” he said. “It wasn’t easy to take the leap, but we decided to roll the dice.” Honey Creek Dairy began using the Vector system Dec. 6, 2019, and switched to the robots for milking in January. The robot mixes feed in a kitchen on one end of the freestall barn and delivers rations to the cows while also pushing up feed as needed. The farm’s dealer, Precision Dairy Services, of Elkader, believes the family is the rst in Iowa to install the system. Venteicher’s satisfaction is not due to only the SHERRY NEWELL/DAIRY STAR

They went sledding during what used to be chore time. “Before, I was never seeing the kids go to bed,” he said. “We like dairy farming but not enough to have it take our whole life away. We decided we’d rather risk losing the farm than continue the way we were.” The way they were included milking 165 cows in a double-8 parallel parlor. The brothers purchased their uncle’s half of the farm in 2015. Their father, Richard, retained a percentage of ownership until 2018 but continued working on the farm as an employee. Now, the brothers milk just over 180 cows and have increased their tank average by about 4 pounds – reaching 94 pounds of milk per cow – just eight weeks into the new facilities. Initially, the Venteichers planned to install two robots and continue milking in the parlor, as well, but quickly realized it was not the best solution. Instead, they installed three robotic milking units spaced throughout an addition to their existing freestall barn. The rst lactation cows are grouped separately, using one robot. The remainder of the herd uses the other two systems. prises. “Our electric bill is actually lower than a year ago,” Venteicher said. “We have not culled a single cow because of the robots. We don’t fetch a single cow in the rst lactation pen. And once everything was red up, there was not much of a learning curve.” Venteicher credits the low fetch cow numbers to rubber mats installed underneath the automatic alley scrapers. He said he believes it gives the
cows more condent footing as they approach the robots. The alley scrapers move manure to a gutter placed where the old and new freestall barns meet, using the existing route for manure moving to their lagoon. The cows lie in deep-bedded sand in the stalls. Venteicher said there has been plenty of interest in their feed robot, which he said is likely because many people are not familiar.

On Sept. 11, 2018 I received a phone call I will never forget. A close friend and farmer I work with often called me to tell me about an area farmer that had died by suicide the day before. The pain in his voice was palpable; a usually jovial man, hearing him so upset struck me in a way I wasn’t prepared for. The next words out of his mouth changed the direction of my work and ultimately my life. After a long pause, he said, “what are you going to do, Emily?” By September 2018, many farmers across the country were already feeling the strain of low commodity prices, high debt loads, and increasing interest rates. Unfortunately, the agricultural economy has not seen much improvement and farmers continue to deal with a long list of stressors. Now more than ever, it is critical that we think about and By Emily Wilmes discuss the need for mental well-being in farming and across agriculture as a whole. U of M Extension Back to that farmer’s question, what am I going to do? I am very fortunate that in my work with UMN Extension I have been able to explore my interest in farm safety and health. That phone call in September of 2018 opened my eyes to the fact that I could play a role in supporting farmers during these tough times; we can all play a role. Since then, work in this area from Extension and many other organizations has taken off. Diving into this work has taught me a lot about intentional well-being. Think of you and your overall well-being as a three-legged stool. The seat represents you and the legs represent your physical, mental, and emotional health. Your physical health is the general well-being of your body: sleeping 7-9 hours each night, eating balanced meals and snacks, and being active. Mental health and emotional health can be a little tricky to tell apart, but think of them like a tag team. Mental health refers to your ability to process information. Emotional health refers to your ability to express feelings which are based upon the information you have processed. We need to attend to all three legs equally in order to ensure we are properly supported. If you neglect one area, imagine cutting an inch off from one of the legs. You’ll still be upright, but it will be uncomfortable and more difcult to support. An important lesson I learned early on is an understanding of mental health versus mental illness. As we have learned more about our brains, we have shifted from an old narrative that mental illness was a character aw and that mental health was optional to a new narrative focused on the interconnectedness of mental, physical, and emotional health and the ways our mental health can be impacted by fear, trauma, chronic stress, and where we live, learn, work, and play. Mental health and mental illness are two separate phenomena; but they do intersect. It’s possible to have a mental illness and still be mentally healthy by managing your symptoms and practicing self-care.

VILLARD, Minn. – In any herd, there is always one cow that stands out amongst the rest. For the Walter family, that cow is Paddy, Purple Paddy as they like to call her. “Paddy is just fun,â€? Laureen Walter said. “She’s a cow that ďƒžts well in our herd and is
a natural in the showring. She gave me the drive to show more and really enjoy dairy farming.� Laureen, 15, and her family – parents Nate and Angie, and brother Levi, 12 – milk 100 cows on their organic dairy farm near Villard. Paddy has been a constant

in Laureen’s 4-H career. The duo ďƒžrst competed at the Pope County Fair in 2014 when Laureen was 10 years old and Paddy was a fall calf. In that heifer class, Laureen and Paddy took ďƒžrst place. “We don’t call her Purple Paddy for nothing,â€? Levi said. It has become commonplace for Paddy to be at the county fair and garner purple ribbons in her classes, including
the state fair lineup. “She’s always had ring presence,� Laureen said. “I really like her legs, depth of rib, smooth shoulders, everything.� Nate agreed. “Paddy is a pretty good cow and an example of the type of cows we want in our herd,� he said. “Aside from that, some of the best cows go unnoticed in the herd, and that’s her.� The 6-year-old three-way

is due to calve this spring. “There’s potential that Pickles will be like her mom,” Laureen said. “We’ll just have to wait and see how she turns out. Although, I’ve shown other cows, and they’ve never been quite like Paddy.” While the cow’s physical characteristics have made her a family favorite, her unique personality also garners attention. The Walters milk in a swing-10 parlor that was retrotted from their stanchion barn. Many times, Paddy is the rst cow of a group waiting to enter the parlor. “I think she’s rst on purpose,” Laureen said. “She’s like a pet.” Angie agreed. “It’s like she can count to 10,” she said. “Paddy will be the 11th cow milked, so she’s the rst one through a new group and gets all the attention.” Sometimes Laureen begins milking before Nate comes to nish the herd after the other farm chores are done. Levi helps feed the animals, and together, Laureen and Levi have enjoyed being a part of the hustle of hay making during the summer months. That time of year is also when the siblings prepare their animals for the fair. For Laureen and Paddy, the exercise is routine. “She is so easy going,” Laureen said. “Once I halter her up, she’s good to go.” And Paddy is not just easy for Laureen to work with. She is a cow whose demeanor is welcomed by all showmen. “Two years ago we used her for the all-around showmanship competition,” Angie said. “The kids were so excited to lead her, and they all wanted to show dairy after that.” Despite Paddy’s success in the showring and her distinctive personality, Laureen has never taken her to the state fair. The rst year Paddy qualied for the state competition, Laureen was too young to attend. Then, as a crossbred and a dry cow, Paddy’s competition at the state fair is typically not as stiff as other classes Laureen has had the chance to participate in with purebred cattle. Paddy’s age has also begun to show. “Her loin is starting to sink,” Nate said. Laureen agreed. “You can’t change genetics, but her legs are starting to give a bit because of her age,” she said. “It also

Walter rst showed the 6-year-old cow as a fall heifer calf. wouldn’t be bad if she could milk a little stronger and have better butterfat.” While Paddy’s days in the showring have rightfully given her the nickname Purple Paddy, her inuence in the Walters’ life is unmatched. “I wouldn’t be showing and in 4-H like this if it wasn’t for Paddy and Laureen,” Levi said. “My sister has taught me a lot.” For Laureen, her experiences as part of the Villard Livewires 4-H Club have helped her to become more

outgoing and a leader amongst her peers. She recently revived her school’s FFA dairy judging team. “Showing dairy cows, and it all starting with Paddy, has led me to do things I never thought I’d do,” Laureen said. “Paddy has given me a passion for dairy.” Laureen and Paddy have grown up together, and as the Walters think about Paddy’s future, they know there will always be a special place for her on the farm. “I don’t know how we’ll ever get rid of her,” Angie said. “She’s our favorite. She’s Paddy.”

Get to know John Osinga of Janesville, Wisconsin
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am a member of my local 4-H club. Also, I have shown Normande cattle at the North American Normande Association National Show. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I am involved in 4-H and exhibiting dairy cattle because I have a passion for show cows. My favorite activity is the Normande show because I get to meet other people who feel as strongly about the benets of Normande cattle as I do. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Showing sheep last year because I had to learn to get out of my comfort zone. Also, it was fun to take advice and knowledge from my sheep leader and apply it to an area that I had no previous experience in. What is your favorite social media? I like Facebook because it’s the only thing I’m in contact with, and even then, it’s my parents’ account. It is interesting to hear more from people who I haven’t seen in a while. What are your career aspirations? I will be attending the College of the Ozarks in Missouri to study animal science and agribusiness for four years. Following graduation, I hope to work in the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship program. This will help me launch my own dairy farm. What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I learned the importance of proper preparation, such as careful attention to feed rations and time spent with animals. Also, I realized that how I interacted with people in my 4-H club was important. Who do you look up to? I’ve always looked up to my dad because he has constantly had a passion for God and for dairy farming. No matter how bad the farm situation has been for our family, my dad has always trusted that God would make things better. Also, he is willing to hear different opinions on how a job should be done. Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I enjoy playing basketball. I’ve played the sport since I was in fth grade, and it is another part of my life that I am passionate about. I sometimes even dribble a ball when I’m in the barn.

Shelby Berktold, 11 Sixth grade When do you do chores? I do chores whenever I am needed. What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I like milking. It is what I normally do during chores. Before I started milking recently, I would do calf chores. My least favorite chore is feeding calves because I have done it too much. What is your favorite animal on your farm? Our cow 11113. This is the favorite cow of our employee, Alyssa, too. We call her Alyssa’s cow. She is really nice, tame and gives a lot of milk. She is 9 years old. What is your favorite subject in school? What do you want to be when you grow up? A math teacher. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would be a lot like this farm – silos, 160 dairy cows, a parlor and a machine shed with Case tractors. It would also have pigs and goats. What is your favorite dairy treat? Cookie dough ice cream. What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I like to go snowmobiling and play hide and seek. Are you involved in any activities? What is your favorite? What do you enjoy about it? I am in volleyball and dance. Dance is my favorite because I like the music and the routines. What do you like to do during recess? I like to play basketball.
Myles Berktold, 9 Third grade When do you do chores? In the winter, I do chores whenever I have time. During the summer, I do chores all the time. What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I like scraping the barn because it is fun. My least favorite chore is feeding calves. In the summer, there are lots of calves to feed and it takes a long time. In the winter, it is too cold while feeding them. What is your favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal is our bunny, Peter. He is 10 months old and the only bunny on the farm. In the winter, he lives in the calf barn so he is warm enough. In the summer, he lives at our place (since we live away from the farm site) so he can run around outside. What is your favorite subject in school? I like science because I like doing experiments. We just did an experiment to show how thermometers measure temperature. We put the thermometer rst in warm water and then in water with ice cubes, and we watched it drop really fast. What is something you have learned in school recently? Long division in math. What do you want to be when you grow up? A dairy farmer. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would be exactly like this farm – a double-9 herringbone parlor with 160 cows along with New Holland, Case and John Deere tractors. I like blue tractors the best. MDA grants make dairy available to Minnesota schools The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will award up to $220,000 to eligible schools and early childcare institutions to increase students’ access to Minnesota dairy. The MDA’s Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation (AGRI) Milk Cooler Grant program provides grant funding to schools for milk coolers and milk dispensing equipment. “Dairy is a great source of protein, calcium, and vitamin D. Children are more likely to become lifelong consumers of nutritious milk and other dairy products if they have access to it in their school,â€? said Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey. “Our goal at the MDA is three-fold: To invest in education institutions across the state, to keep Minnesota students healthy and strong, and to beneďƒžt Minnesota’s farmers.â€? Schools and other educational institutions that purchase milk coolers for their meal programs are eligible to apply for up to $1,500 per proposal. A maximum of three proposals will be accepted for each organization or school district. Eligible costs include the cost of the equipment and associated installation expenses.
