MARSHFIELD, Wis. – A young aspiring farmer faces an uphill struggle establishing him or herself in the dairy industry due to the capital investment required. Aaron Gorst embarked on that journey July 2, 2014, in a rented barn near Granton, milking about 40 cows. Aaron did not grow up on a dairy farm, but spent much of his youth working on nearby dairy farms, where he discovered his passion for the industry. “I was just waiting for the right opportunity to get started,” Aaron said. That opportunity presented itself while he was working as an articial inseminator. A farmer that he bred cows for was planning to retire and was looking for a new home for his herd. Aaron was able to work with the Farm Service Agency to secure nancing to purchase the cows and begin chasing his own dream. Aaron entered the dairy industry during the high milk prices in 2014, but those prices brought challenges of their own. “My rst milk check was $26 per hundredweight,” Aaron said. “But on the other side, I had to buy $2,500 cows.” At the time, he had only been dating his future wife, Ellen, for about six months, but she supported the decision

She had grown up on a beef farm but was working as a herdsperson at a nearby dairy farm. For the rst few years, Aaron continued his job breeding cows. Following the birth of their daughter, he made the decision to make a career shift and took a job as a nutritionist, which
afforded him more exible hours. In June 2015, Aaron and Ellen purchased their current 80-acre farm outside of Marsheld. “Ellen drove by on her way to work one day and saw the for sale sign and told me about the farm,” Aaron said. “It had been a while since there had
been cows on the farm. But, it was the right price, and we could make it t our needs.” With the help of friends and a lot of sweat equity, they gutted the barn and put in new tie stalls to replace the Turn to GORSTS | Page 4

Today, Aaron and Ellen, with their 18-month-old daughter Alana, milk 56 cows. They provide the majority of the labor with some help from Aaron’s mother, Ellen’s parents and Dennis Gettinger, a neighboring retired dairy farmer. “I have always admired Aaron from the day the cows rst came to the rented farm,” Ellen said. “The dedication and drive he has and the hours he is willing to put in to achieve his goals are admirable. He does chores, goes to work and comes home and does chores again. When there is eld work to be done, he heads out to do that after evening chores.” The Gorsts are thankful for the help of Aaron’s mother and Gettinger, saying that without either of them the entire venture would be more difcult to manage. “The help from my mom the rst year at the rented farm and now from Ellen’s parents with Alana and Dennis’ help on the farm have all been a huge asset to us,” Aaron said. “That help has allowed me to keep my full-time job, which has been crucial.” They have continued to make improvements as time and nances have allowed. They have built a heifer shed, took down two silos and put in

Do cover crops, manure timing make a difference?
Wilson shares results of U of M study By Krista Kuzma

Many dairy producers manage manure and crops on their farms. To give them more insight about those topics, Melissa Wilson shared results during a webinar Feb. 26 from an on-going study she has been involved with as a University of Minnesota Extension specialist and assistant professor. The study is about integrating cover crops and manure. “We wanted to look at different crop rotations, cover crop types and see if we could inject manure into them,” Wilson said about the goal of the rst study. “Also, we studied if we can get the cover crop growing earlier to hopefully get the living roots really going to help trap nutrients from the manure.” The three crop rotations included corn after sweet corn, corn after soybean, and corn and corn for continuous corn silage. Corn after sweet corn Between the sweet corn and corn planting, winter rye, oat and a combination of the two plus radishes were used as cover crops. Manure timing was also studied, with plots having manure applied in early fall versus late fall along with one plot of spring fertilizer only. Wilson said above ground biomass was collected from the plots in fall and spring. While the fall did not amount to much because of the manure application, the spring had more biomass even though the oat had died off by then.
“The rye really took off,” Wilson said. “And the growth was much higher than where we hadn’t applied any nutrients, which is expected. But that means they’re hopefully trapping some of those manure nutrients which will then be available for the following crop.” The yields from the corn after sweet corn did not give them the results they were expecting. “We didn’t nd any interactions between fertilizer or nutrient source and the cover crop,” Wilson said. “Regardless of what happened with different manure sources, the cover crop reacted the same way. The same within cover crops. It didn’t matter what nutrient source was there; it was still the same trend across cover crops.” Early applied manure on the sweet corn to corn trial resulted in 217 bushels per acre in what Wilson called a “signicant difference” in the statistical analysis since the spring fertilizer resulted in 230 bushels per acre. Late manure application did better than both with 264 bushels per acre. The cover crops did not signicantly impact yield. “We were happy to see these results, but I was bummed out because I was hoping the cover crops with the early manure would increase yields, but in this case, we didn’t see that trend,” Wilson said.
Continuous corn silage In the continuous corn trial, the cover crop of annual rye grass mixed with winter rye was used to study three cover crop timings – interseeded at the v4 stage, overseeded at the r5 stage and drilled. There was also a plot with no cover crop. Manure application was also studied with early fall versus late fall applications along with a
spring only fertilizer. The fall ground biomass had a large variation depending on the cover crop timing. Interseeded at v4 stage had higher amounts than overseeded at r5 stage. Drilled had very little. The spring saw more consistency with the interseeded v4 stage and overseeded r5 stage; however, drilled was again lower. “Harvest of the silage corn can be pretty tough on the soil so we were happy to nd we still had cover crop growth even in pretty wet conditions in fall 2019,” Wilson said. “A lot of this biomass was annual rye grass, which winter killed so that’s why there was really only winter rye left in the spring that the biomass wasn’t as high. Interestingly, in the overseeded rye, we did see the early and late manure applications did catch up to the fertilizer treatments. That wasn’t necessarily the case with the interseeded cover crops.” Early and late applied manure increased yield on continuous corn silage plots to 26 tons per acre compared to the fertilizer at 23.5 tons per acre. “We were pleased to see that,” she said. There were no signicant differences in cover crop impact on yield. Corn after soybean There were three cover crop treatments – overseeded winter rye, drilled winter rye and no cover crop. There were two manure or fertilizer treatments – late manure application and spring fertilizer. “We wanted to see if we overseeded the cover crop around leaf drop, would that at least get us more growth than if we waited to drill until after harvest,” Wilson said. “One of the big things we’ve learned from this trial is how you apply the manure really matters when you’re putting it into a cover crop.”
The drilled soybean did not have enough ground biomass to collect. In the overseeded plots, there was 50 pounds of biomass per acre collected in the fall and over 250 pounds per acre in the spring. “So far, that’s a good sign,” Wilson said. “We were happy to see the damage done by the manure application didn’t seem to hinder the spring biomass.” There were no signicant differences in yield from nutrient source timing or cover crops. “That’s good because we’re doing things that could potentially impact our soil health that’s not negatively affecting yield,” Wilson said. “But we hope to look more into those aspects. We collected a lot of those soil samples. We’re going to look at nitrogen in the soil, phosphorus and some of the soil health aspects – total carbon, soil resistance to see if there could be benets.” Overall, Wilson said there were a few points learned. Planting cover crops early seemed to improve the amount of biomass. “Low disturbance manure injection is going to be key when applying into cover crops,” Wilson said. “If you’re doing really aggressive tillage when you’re applying your manure that is not going to help a cover crop grow.” Applying manure in early fall is risky even with cover crops. “Where we had early applied manure, it didn’t matter what the cover crop was, it was still a lower yield on average than the other ones,” Wilson said. “We thought there would be an interaction, but in this case, we didn’t see that. But it is one year. We are repeating this study for a second year.”

Greg Palas, manager of support services at Dairy Records Management Systems (DRMS) at Iowa State University, will present the program. Palas will provide a hands-on webinar reviewing report generation and points on using the reports to tweak herd management. Fred Hall, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, said executive reports are often underutilized despite providing valuable production information. He said producers often get accustomed to one or two reports, and may not realize the full breadth of information available. The webinar will be an opportunity to help producers expand their reach. Registration is not required and participation is free. • University of Minnesota Extension is excited to be partnering with North Dakota State University Extension to offer a series of farm safety webinars this winter. These events are devastating to communities and impact the livelihoods of those we know and love dearly. The purpose of these webinars is to empower communities and individuals
to prioritize safety on the farm. The webinar series will be January-March on Thursdays at 11 a.m. Each webinar will last one hour. The series will conclude on March 18 with a mental health topic; Emily Krekelberg will be conducting QPR Training. QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a one-hour suicide prevention program that helps individuals learn the three steps anyone can take to help prevent suicide. • In response to high levels of both personal and nancial farm stress, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering three “Farm Couple Getaways” aimed at farmers wanting to take advantage of activities to improve farm family communication, work on farm or family goal setting, farm transitioning, or who would just like a weekend away to discuss farm and family issues. Preventing lameness in dairy cattle
Cook provides tips on hoof care, ooring, footbath management venting lameness – hoof care, disinfection and cow comfort. “Good hoof care is essential and goes a long way in preventing lameness,” Cook said. “When done correctly, trimming should restore a more upright claw angle and balance weight between the inner and outer claws.” Toe length should be cut to 3 inches. Overgrown hoof wall should be removed and the claw balanced by removing overgrowth. The trimmer should remove buckle if present and trim the sole at so it is perpendicular to the shinbone. Trim cows twice per lactation – around 120 days in milk and again at dry-off. Cook said a maximum of 50 cows per trimmer per day is ideal to ensure quality work. He also suggests trimming difcult cows at the beginning of the day and easier ones at the end. “We can do a lot of good with hoof care, and we can also do a lot of bad,” Cook said. “Is hoof trimming a positive or negative for your herd?” Signs of poor trimming include things like a hoof wall trimmed too short or toes that are trimmed too short. “You shouldn’t see the

These diseases are caused by bacterial agents, and poor hygiene is a major contributor. “Standing and walking through manure is bad for cows’ feet, and hooves coated with manure is a known risk factor for digital dermatitis,” said Cook, who recommends a manure removal system other than automatic scrapers. “Genetics and nutrition can also play a part.” Digital dermatitis is characterized by active and inactive lesions. Active lesions are painful, small, red, strawberry-like lesions that should be treated with a topical treatment such as tetracycline. Routine use of a footbath multiple times per week is recommended to keep inactive lesions from becoming active. Contact is important, and longer baths work better. The ideal footbath design allows for two to three immersions per foot. Footbaths should be 10-12 feet long and 24 inches wide sloped to 3 feet at 3 feet high with a 10-inch-high step. Use an antibacterial with evidence of efcacy against DD and foot rot, such as copper sulfate. Cook recommends no higher than 5% copper sulfate and said to monitor soil copper levels. If using formalin, do not go above 4% and avoid use in cold weather. The use of an acidier should be to a pH no lower than 3. Treatments are effective for approximately 150 to 300 cow passes. When implementing footbaths, do not forget about dry cows and heifers. Prevention is key. Studies show heifers that contract DD during the rearing period are more likely to get the disease in their rst lactation. Cow comfort is important for preventing lameness. Increased standing time on hard surfaces can be a major cause of foot problems such as sole ulcers. Referred to as the standing up disease, getting cows to lie down and rest can eliminate sole ulcers. White line disease and sole ulcers cause the claw to lose its normal anatomy and architecture, creating permanent changes to the claw. A cow with these problems is susceptible to repeat ulcers and toe lesions. “A good ooring surface is a critical component of good cow comfort,” Cook said. “White line lesions are an external force lesion created by poor ooring and poor handling. Forcing a cow to stop and change direction creates a recipe for white line. Slatted oors also cause trauma to the claw and elevate the risk for white line lesion development. Cows often walk in a line in the space between slats to avoid the
trauma of standing over the slat – they don’t like them.” Stocking density, time in pen, stall comfort and heat stress are factors that determine lying time. Overstocking results in reduced rest. A 1 to 1.5 stocking density ratio decreases lying time by 15%. A 1 to 2 stocking density ratio decreases lying time by 25%. “Aim for a resting time of 11.5 to 12.5 hours per day,” Cook said. Deep sand offers cushion, traction and support to facilitate rising and lying movements, and is the preferred bed surface for dairy cows, encouraging the most amount of rest. In a study, sand bedding resulted in the greatest amount of lying time compared to other surfaces at 11.7 hours per day. Wider stalls featuring less restrictive neck rail locations, low rear curb heights and absence of lunge obstructions are also helpful in preventing lameness. Thin soles and toe lesions are commonly seen on larger dairies where cows walk long distances on concrete. To remove pressure, the handler should walk in a zig zag pattern when moving cattle to the milking center rather than walking in a straight line. “This takes pressure off the backs of these cows and allows them to move at their own pace but still keeps everybody moving forward,” Cook said. “Also, limit the use of crowd gates. We’ve seen white line issues where there’s controllers on these gates. People are trying to milk faster and faster and don’t even see what they’re doing as they press the button to advance the gate. We see cows slipping and hoof damage as a result.” To create a more walkable surface for cows, grooves may be oated into new concrete or cut into existing concrete. Good grooving requires concrete with correctly sized aggregate, and correctly set and mixed concrete that is not too dry or too wet. Concrete should be left to cure for as long as possible. Cook said good concrete is 3/4 inches wide, a 1/2 inch deep and 3 1/4 inches on center to make good contact with the hoof. Leave concrete ve days before cutting grooves and 30 days before cows walk on it. Finally, give cows a break from concrete by installing rubber transfer lanes to reduce hoof wear to and from the parlor, and reduce pressure on cows’ feet during milking by adding rubber to the parlor platform. “A lameness goal of less than 10% is achievable for most herds,” Cook said. “As for severe lameness, the goal should be zero or less than 1%. Good hoof care, footbath and cow comfort practices can keep lameness numbers at a manageable level.”

A favorite experience having Brock work for our family is that he enjoys working dairy cows. What qualities does your employee have that benet the farm? Brock has an outstanding work ethic and has a willingness to take on new tasks. We appreciate his knowledge and his interest in agriculture. Questions for the youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I milk, feed calves and do some of the cleaning. I work at the farm about 48 hours per month, mostly on the weekends. When did you begin helping on the farm? I started working at Peters Farm in October 2020. I had heard that it is a good place to work, and I wanted to work on a dairy farm.

I mostly work on the farm on weekends, so I am usually caught up with school stuff. I try to prioritize to make sure everything gets done. How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has taught me responsibility and the importance of taking care of something that cannot take care of itself.
What do you love most about farm life? I enjoy being with the cattle and being on the farm in general. I like that no two days working are ever exactly the same. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employer? They have taught me the importance of doing something right the rst time, so that you do not have to waste time or money redoing it. What are your future plans? I plan to either go to a tech school to study a trade or to enter the workforce. I also plan to continue to own and work with my own cattle.

If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I would have teal cows, some goats, chickens, kitties, a dog and a peacock because they are teal and beautiful. What is the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? I get to see a lot of my extended family all the time, and I get to be outside for most of the day when I’m not in school. What is your favorite dairy treat? Cookie dough ice cream. What is your favorite activity to do on the farm during the winter? We make a huge pile of snow with the skidloader on the edge of a hill by the milkhouse and go sledding down it all winter. Cole Krohnfeldt 12 years old When do you do chores and what chores do you do? When I’m not at sports or school, I help feed calves and give them straw and water. I also give hay and straw to the cows that are going to calve soon or are drying up. I wash up the pails from the calves. I feed the dog and cats. I do top dress and sweep the feed in sometimes. And, I pitch pens when they get full. I like driving the skidloader and tractor with the rake or baler for my parents. I help unload straw in the summer too. What are your favorite and least favorite chores? My least favorite is washing the pails because I hate doing dishes. My favorite is driving anything but mainly the skidloader. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite heifer is Zippy. She was born too early and had to live in our house for two weeks. She got tame, and now she’s 1 and follows me around out in the cattle shed. What is your favorite subject in school? Physical education. It is fun, and my teacher plays music during class. What is something you have learned in school recently? For Black History Month, I did a report on Darius Rucker. It was cool to learn about the types of music he has played. I like his country music the best though. What do you want to be when you grow up? Probably a farmer like my dad, mom, grandpa, grandma, and three of my great-grandpas and great-grandmas. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I would have dairy cows, grow crops and drive John Deere tractors. I’d have a dog and some chickens. I want robot milkers for my farm. What is the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? Getting to learn a little bit about everything. What is your favorite dairy treat? Any kind of ice cream. This herd has been on official DHIA testing for many years with current records indicating a herd average of 2X 23,279 milk, 4.1% 931 fat, 3.1% 721 protein, 75 pound tank average with 47 over 100 pounds with beautiful udders. SCC averaging approx. 100,000. Several recently fresh or due soon after sale time. The herd has been aggressively culled in preparation for this dispersion. The Lanners have used herd sires exclusively from the Melarry (Hackett) herd for over 10 years. All cows sired by or in service to sons of high TPI and NM sires including: 12 sons of Frazzled, plus more by Helix, Resolve, Reason, Nugent, Curry, Rolan, Moola and Solution. An excellent herd health program has been in place for many years with all cows vaccinated and boosted annually with Bovishield Gold 5L5 and One Shot. At dry off all cows receive J-vac and revaccinated with J-vac 3 three weeks prior to calving. Cows also receive Quartermaster and U-seal. All bred heifers vaccinated with Bovishield Gold 5L5 pre-breeding. Hooves are trimmed monthly. Cows have very good feet, legs and overall mobility. Cows are milked in a 21 swing parlor and housed in a free-stall facility. In order to expedite the sale process, cows and heifers will be sold in lots from 1 to 4 head per lot. Any cattle sold in multiples will be sorted in uniform lots as to age, lactation stages and production.
