Herzog recognized at Pine County Dairy Association annual meeting The Pine County Dairy Association held its annual meeting in Hinckley Minn. A handcrafted plaque was awarded to Rick Herzog, owner of the Pine City Pizza Pub. His restaurant uses 26,000 to 28,000 pounds of real mozzarella cheese annually from local Burnett Dairy. The award was presented by Pine Co. Dairy Association president, Tom Gimpl. NICC students compete in National PAS conference Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) agriculture students competed in the National Postsecondary Agriculture Student (PAS) Conference March 14-17 in Des Moines, Iowa, and all students placed nationally in competition. NICC dairy science students competing in the Dairy Specialist Career contest were: Devon Chrystal, of Delhi, Iowa; Lucas Schmitt, of Hawkeye, Iowa; Andrew Ferden, of Utica, Minn., and Kaitlyn Peterson, of Decorah. The four-member teamed earned a second place nish nationally. A second team comprised of team members Jacob Nunnikhoven, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Austin Langreck, of Hawkeye, and Andrew Graf, of Hokah, Minn., placed seventh. Bolins named 2012 Swiss Valley Farms Outstanding Young Cooperators Dan and Lynn Bolin, Clarksville, Iowa, were named 2012 Swiss Valley Farms Outstanding Young Cooperators during the recent YC Conference in Dubuque, Iowa. The Bolins will represent Swiss Valley Farms dairy cooperative this fall at the National Milk Producers Federation’s 2012 Dairy Summit in Orlando, Fla. They will also join the Swiss Valley Farms YC Steering Committee where they will help plan the co-op’s annual regional young cooperator two-day conference. 2012 Kandiyohi County Dairy Princesses crowned The Kandiyohi County Dairy Association hosted their annual dairy princess banquet and coronation on March 3 at the Kandi Entertainment Center in Willmar, Minn. The

2012 Dairy Princesses are Jessica Gatewood, daughter of Gene and Shelly Gatewood of Willmar; Brielle Hauge, daughter of Philip and Shereen Hauge of Sunburg; and Johanna Johnson, daughter of Warren and Stacy Johnson of Pennock. Martin recognized by NIRSC Neal Martin, director of the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wis., received the rst ever John S. Shenk Memorial Award from the NIRS Forage and Feed Testing Consortium (NIRSC) for his 20 years of service to the organization. The award was presented at the NIRSC annual meeting on Feb. 15. Martin was one of the founders of the NIRSC in 1992 when he was a forage extension specialist at the University of Minnesota. National DHIA names 21 scholarship winners The National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) Scholarship Committee selected 21 high school seniors and college students as recipients of $750 scholarships. This year’s National DHIA scholarship winners from the Dairy Star area are: Nathan Daninger, Forest Lake, Minn.; Rebecca Groos, Howard Lake, Minn.; Thomas Harren, Eagle Bend, Minn.; Chelsey Johnson, Heron Lake, Minn.; Kathleen Miron, Hugo, Minn.; Sara Roerick, Swanville, Minn.; Alyson Schwartau, Red Wing, Minn.; Justin Siewert, Lake City, Minn.; Jacob Sjostrom, Lafayette, Minn.; Joe Uter, Waverly, Minn.; Megan Viland, Pipestone, Minn.; Nicholas Weber, Bernard, Iowa; and Kaylee Wegner, Faribault, Minn. 2012 Holstein DJM seminalists announced Holstein Association USA is excited to announce the 2012 Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) seminalists. The Distinguished Junior Member award is the highest honor given to members of the National Junior Association, ages 17 to 21. This year’s seminalists from the Dairy Star coverage area are: Jacob Achen, St. Paul, Minn., and Matt Henkes, Luana, Iowa. The seminalists will interview at the National Holstein Convention, June 27-30 in Springeld, Mo., to be named one of six nalists.

Holstein Association USA names 2012 YDJM nalists Eight nalists have been named in Holstein Association USA’s annual Young Distinguished Junior Member (YDJM) competition. The YDJM recognition is the highest award given to National Junior Holstein members, ages 9 to 16. The nalists will be recognized during the 2012 National Holstein Convention, June 27-30, in Springeld, Mo. This year’s YDJM nalists from the Dairy Star coverage area are: Katherine Larson, Viroqua, Wis., and Jordan Siemers, Newton, Wis. Schingoethe honored with symposium David J. Schingoethe, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Dairy Science at South Dakota State University, was recently recognized by the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) and the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) with a symposium in his honor on amino acid nutrition of lactating dairy cows. The symposium took place at the annual Midwest ADSA/ASAS Meeting in Des Moines, Iowa. Leslie receives NMC Award of Excellence Ken Leslie, Professor Emeritus at the University of Guelph, was the recipient of the rst-ever National Mastitis Council (NMC) Award of Excellence for Mastitis Prevention and Control. Leslie is a well-known leader in milk quality research and education and championed the NMC 10 Point Plan for udder health. Kasson Mantorville FFA wins proceeds The Kasson Mantorville FFA Chapter recently placed fourth in Minnesota in the national FFA Chapter Challenge, an effort challenging FFA chapter members to meet farmers in their local communities to build relationships and learn about different agricultural careers. The Kasson Mantorville chapter received 104 votes from local farmers, landing them a fourth-place nish. As a result, they’ll receive a $1,250 FFA Certicate of Credit to be used for FFA expenses like ofcial FFA jackets, chapter supplies and registration fees for national FFA leadership conferences. The Kasson Mantorville FFA is located in Kasson, Minn. The Kasson Mantorville FFA advisor is Lori Pagel.
