How many years have you been dairy farming together and what do you love about it? We have dairy farmed together for 36 years. We love being our own boss along with being able to decide what and when to get things done.

What is each of your roles on the farm? We both milk the cows together, but each of us has our own interests on the rest of the farm. Stan mixes the feed, hauls manure and manages eld work. Bev takes care of all the newborn and young calves. She also keeps the records on the cows and calves.

What has been the key to the longevity of your dairy career? Determination. We continue to farm as always through the ups and downs of milk prices. Also, doing all we can to improve the quality of our milk. This is very important to us. For the last 20-plus years, we have been shipping what our processor classies as excellent quality milk, including the last two years being in the superior quality milk category.

What has been the most memorable dairy farming experience? In 2010, we hosted the last Breakfast on The Farm in Houston County.

What was the biggest obstacle have the two of you faced in your dairying career and how did you overcome it? The low milk price in 2009 was the worst. We continued to work hard and didn’t update equipment like we would have liked. We made do with what we had and hung in there until prices improved. They are still below breakeven price yet.

What are the keys to working side-by-side with your spouse? Be understanding.

Farming can be stressful, so it’s important to know when to talk about something and when to just keep quiet.

What is a trait you admire in your spouse that has helped in your dairying journey?

Bev: Stan works hard in all areas of the farm, but I think he excels in heat detection. It’s an important part in getting replacement heifers into our herd.

Stan: Raising calves can be challenging. Bev has the ability and patience to care for all the newborn and young calves.

What activities do you like to do together off the farm? We enjoy looking at the old classic tractors and cars. It’s pretty neat to see how they’ve changed throughout the years.

We also enjoy spending time with our children and grandchildren.

Tell us about your farm. We farm 360 acres between owned and rented land, including both corn and hay. Most of that is fed to the cattle, with the remainder sold for crop input expense. Our cows are milked in a stanchion barn with automatic take offs.

How many years have you been dairy farming together and what do you love about it? We’ve been farming together for 31 years. We love working for ourselves without a boss looking over our shoulder. We are in charge of our own success (for the most part). With both of us on the farm, we were able to have our Brodhead, Wis. 31 kids at home as opYears posed to daycare when Dairy farming for they were young. They were out in the barn as soon as they could sit in a stroller, observing everything we do. We have registered Holsteins, which have given us many more opportunities. We’ve been able to enjoy and have had good success showing. We’ve had several All-Americans and All-American nominees over the years, both Red & White and Black & White. We’ve been able to merchandise high-prole animals within the United States and internationally.

What is each of your roles on the farm? Todd handles all the feeding, milking and breeding decisions. We purchase all our feed except for corn silage, so he is in charge of nding and making all the decisions on hay, baleage and supplement purchases. Trish takes care of the calves and heifers, animal registration and keeps the nancial records. She also owns a graphic design business, working out of the home, so she takes care of creating all the farm advertising and any other graphic design needs.

What has been the key to the longevity of your dairy career? Todd is a stubborn Swiss and Trish is a stubborn German. Neither one of us gives up on anything very easily. So, even in the tough times we are able to keep pushing on. We both understand nothing comes without plenty of hard work and attention to details. It’s also been key that we both are here on the farm working together. We also have a great respect for each other and the role we play on the farm. We trust each is doing all that is required to make it work.

What has been the most memorable dairy farming experience? All the showing we’ve done together as a family. When our two children, Jake and Paige, were younger and involved with 4-H and junior Holstein association, the show season was very busy. They had a lot of great success, each one of them being able to show a Junior All-American nominee or two. It was those times during show season when we all worked together to have success. Everyone had their role, whether it was being home to get things done or taking care of the string at each show. It was hard work for sure, but many, many great memories.

What was the biggest obstacle the two of you have faced in your dairying career and how did you overcome it? The biggest obstacle by far has been the past four years and the current slump in the dairy economy. In 31 years, there has never been anything like what’s going on right now in our industry. We can’t say we have overcome it, but rather are getting through it by really watching what we spend money on and not splurging. Things that need xing are either on hold if we can get by, or else Todd does a lot of the maintenance and repairs on the equipment and facilities himself. We’re managing to continue to remain nancially secure and pay all the bills.

What are the keys to working side-by-side with your spouse? The biggest key is that we’ve always been able to laugh a lot together. Whether the laughing is at one another (or ourselves) or laughing together, it helps keep things light. Just when it looks like an argument is looming, one of us is able to crack a joke and turn the tension into humor. It’s hard to stay mad at someone when they can make you laugh. Also, as mentioned earlier, we have a huge amount of respect for each other. There’s never a question about judgment in what to do in any situation. We just know that each is making the right decision.

What is a trait you admire in your spouse that has helped in your dairying journey? Trish: What I admire most about Todd is his mental fortitude, especially lately. It would be really easy in these recent days, when everything seems to go wrong, for him to just give up. But he just keeps pushing through. He also has an uncanny ability to examine situations and gure out how to resolve things – whether it’s a broken piece of equipment or a sick cow. His passion for our cattle and in caring for them is remarkable. Todd: What I admire most about Trish is the way she embraced the dairy farm life. She grew up in a pretty well-off suburb of Milwaukee and had no farming experience. When we got married, she took over the calf rearing, heifer care and animal registration without hesitation and does an amazing job. Not only did she dive right in to the work here at home, but also took on leadership roles in our community. She was the Junior Holstein club advisor for many years as well as the dairy leader of our 4-H club. You’d never know she was a city girl.

What activities do you like to do together off the farm? We both attended school at UW-Madison, so we are avid Badger fans. We love to get away to a football or basketball game whenever possible. Otherwise, we like to sleep in our spare time.

Tell us about your farm. We milk 68 registered Holsteins. We have only 27 acres of tillable ground, so we make all our own corn silage, but purchase everything else. Our focus has always been on working with the cows, building strong pedigrees with great longevity. Our herd BAA is currently 111.1 percent. We’ve been in the top 200 in the country for BAA for 20 years or more.

Currently, we are 11th in the country for our herd size. Our two children are Jake, 25 and Paige, 22. Jake graduated from UW-Platteville in 2017 with a degree in crops and soil science. He works full time off the farm, but is still here when he can be helping with milking and chores. Paige is a senior at UW-Whitewater, where she will attain her degree in early childhood and special education.

39 Years Dairy farming for

How many years have you been dairy farming together and what do you love about it? We have been married 38 years and have farmed together for 39 years. We love being our own boss.

While the children were growing up, we were able to be with them most of the time. We liked being able to see them get on the school bus and share stories with each other at supper time.

What is each of your roles on the farm? Tom is in charge of the eldwork, feed ration, feeding and anything else that needs to get done. He basically does everything but milking. Penny is in charge of calves, milking and bookkeeping. We have always helped each other when needed. Tom has even helped with housework years ago.

What has been the key to the longevity of your dairy career? Our faith in God and our diligence in what we have done have helped us. Another key has been our commitment to the land, our cows, our family and our future.

What has been the most memorable dairy farming experience? Remodeling the sheds into freestall barns and switching over to milking in our step-up parlor in 2006. It was also memorable when all our family and neighbors supported us as we rooted for our daughter, Kalley, in the Princess Kay of the Milky Way contest in 2016 as a top 12 nalist. Another memorable experience was when our cows got out on Christmas Eve. Earlier in the day, Penny had joked about not having to milk the cows for the evening because they were going to visit Bethlehem. The herd tried to make it true because later that night they were running down the road. Even though it wasn’t a fun reason to be out chasing cows, it was a beautiful evening.

What was the biggest obstacle have the two of you faced in your dairying career and how did you overcome it? The interest rates in the 1980s were a big obstacle, but the farm economy is worse for us now even though we have everything paid off. Although we love our location close to town and a local trail, it has also been a challenge. We are land locked and cannot expand or add any more animals.

What are the keys to working side-by-side with your spouse? It is a give and take. A lot of people say it is 50/50, but it is actually 60/40. You have to compromise. This is with any relationship, not only a marriage or a business. It also helps that we aren’t with each other much of the day. We are both here, but we are doing our own chores.

What is a trait you admire in your spouse that has helped in your dairying journey? Tom: Penny is dedicated to taking care of her responsibilities, including the calves and the house. Penny: Tom is a good with machinery and a good manager of money. He’s always been frugal.

What activities do you like to do together off the farm? We like to go out to eat. We try to take Sunday nights off so we can have time do go to a restaurant. On these days, it’s also nice to take a nap if we have a chance. We also like to visit our grandson and take rides on our motorcycle trike.

We got it for our 30th wedding anniversary.

Tell us about your farm. We farm together with our son, Mark, and daughter, Kalley. Kalley is also a welder. Our other two sons, Jonathan and Matthew, have off-farm jobs. Aside from family, we have four part-time employees. We grow all our own forages, and buy grain and supplements.

Our heifers are custom raised because we don’t have the space.

How many years have you been dairy farming together and what do you love about it? Cliff has been here his whole life and is the third generation. We were married July 11, 1987, and I worked on the farm and 12-hour days at a factory job.

I quit that job in 1991 to become a full-time farmer. We work toArena, Wis. 27 gether really well.

Years Some people say they Dairy farming for couldn’t work with their spouse, but we seem to just ne. I would say our best day was Dec. 30, 1993 when our son Cyrus was born. He was our little miracle, as we were told we couldn’t have children. I guess we proved them wrong.

He and his wife Tess also farm with us and will hopefully be the fourth generation to run the farm.

What is each of your roles on the farm? We all work together, and if a job needs to be done then it gets done. I pay the bills, and Cliff says he makes them. Cyrus is like his dad; he does it all.

What has been the key to the longevity of your dairy career? The love of the land and our cows. I know people have said we could make more money getting rid of older cows, but they are the foundation of our herd. Our oldest now is 12 years old. We take a lot of pride in our little herd.

What has been the most memorable dairy farming experience? Our farm was founded in 1865. The best day was to get our 100-year certicate at the state fair. Just think of all the changes this farm has seen.

What was the biggest obstacle have the two of you faced in your dairying career and how did you overcome it? The milk prices. Non-farmers don’t realize how much income we have lost in the last couple of years and how all our input cost keeps going up. We’ll hang on as long as we can and pray for better prices.

What are the keys to working side-by-side with your spouse? Cliff and I work well together because we try to gure out things together. If we argue we get it out, get it over with and move on. We always have each other’s backs. Honestly, we love each other so it works What is a trait you admire in your spouse that has helped in your dairying journey? The thing I admire most about Cliff is he remembers everything. It amazes me.

What activities do you like to do together off the farm? We really don’t leave the farm too often, but on the rare occasion we get off the farm together is usually going to Farm and Fleet for supplies.

Tell us about your farm. Our farm was founded in 1865 as one of three farms owned by the Jones family, and ours is the only still owned by a Jones. We run about 300 acres. Our farm is one of the last dairy farms on this stretch of road. We still milk in a stanchion barn. We love the contact with the cows. We do as much as we can for sick cows before we call our vet. We work very closely with our vets to keep our cows healthy. We also work closely with our nutritionist.

One thing is for sure, we have a great family that likes to help and many good friends who also help when they can. Isn’t that the true meaning of a family farm?

Farmers at highest risk of contracting zoonotic diseases

Take precautions as part of normal routine

BERNARD, Iowa – Dairy farmers, their family and employees are eight times more likely than the average person to get sick from bacteria or parasites naturally found in livestock, according to a study recently completed by the Minnesota Department of Health.

“Our study looked at diseases that are usually thought of as something you get from food or water, but are also diseases people and animals can share. There hasn’t been much research done on how common these diseases are among farmers and their families, so we think they are largely underrecognized in this population,” said Carrie Klumb, epidemiologist and project coordinator for MDH’s Upper Midwest Agriculture Safety and Health project.

Five years’ worth of data were collected on reports of Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium parvum, E. coli and Salmonella in Minnesota. These are zoonotic diseases, meaning they can easily be transferred from animals to humans.

“Our biggest concern is that cattle and other livestock naturally carry these germs,” Klumb said.

“These germs don’t make animals sick, but can make us sick. That’s why we care so much about this topic.”

Of the cases reported, 23 percent were exposed to food animals prior to signs of illness, and 61 percent of those lived or worked on a farm, said Klumb.

“Really, a majority of people who were infected lived on, worked on or visited a farm,” she said.

While the study is specic to Minnesota, Iowa dairy farmer Mark Hosch knows all too well the dangers of zoonotic diseases. Last spring, he was diagnosed with Q fever, which is an infection caused

by Coxiella burnetii bacteria found in cattle, sheep and goats.

Now, Hosch is on 18-months’ worth of antibiotics.

“This has been a learning experience with the luck of the draw,” said Hosch of his rare diagnosis. “I didn’t know any better and there’s nothing I could’ve done differently.”

It is believed Hosch was infected with the bacteria while helping in the maternity pen on his 150-cow dairy in Jones County near Bernard, Iowa.

A few years ago, Hosch noticed his lack of endurance and more frequent aches and pains. The symptoms continued, so he was tested for Lyme disease.

“The test came back negative and the doctor thought I was just getting older,” Hosch, 58, said. “I couldn’t argue with him.”

Then, in April 2018, Hosch noticed two of his ngers became swollen and turned purple. The night prior he had acute pain and u-like symptoms.

“The doctor came in and looked, then took a second look before sending me to the ER,” Hosch said. “They all had gowns and facemasks on and were getting ready to pull tests. I asked the infectious disease doctor if it could be Q fever.”

In February 2018, Hosch’s daughter, Skylar, was tested for the disease as part of requirements for a job. She tested positive for exposure.

However, Hosch’s condition was much worse. He was diagnosed with chronic Q fever, which had already begun slowly damaging his heart valves.

“It’s funky,” he said. “I’m not supposed to have this. There’s one in 1,000 chance of getting Q fever and one in 1 million chance of having chronic Q fever.”

Since being diagnosed, Hosch’s daughter has returned home to help with chores while her father recovers.

“The worse-case scenario was that I die,” Hosch said. “The second worse was that I’d have to come in twice a day for an IV. So, instead I

take pills three times a day.”

While Hosch still has about nine months left of treatment, he is condent his condition is becoming less severe. His joint pain is clearing and his energy is returning. Routine medical tests also show his arteries are clear and functioning well.

“I’m feeling better than I was six months ago,” Hosch said. “I continue farming and get stronger every day.”

In the realm of zoonotic diseases, Q fever is extremely rare.

However, in Australia, humans – especially those working with ruminant animals – are vaccinated for the disease.

The challenge with zoonotic diseases is that unless they pose a danger to public health, they are rarely reported to state organizations. For example, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health does not closely track the diseases Klumb’s study oversaw, but does have a strict protocol if Bovine TB or brucellosis – also known as Bangs disease – were to ever appear.

“We haven’t found either (TB or brucellosis) in Minnesota in many years, but testing is still done to protect Minnesota’s cattle and the farmers that care for them,” said Dr. Stacey Schwabenlander, Minnesota BOAH. Dairy farmers and those around cattle regularly should take precautions to mitigate the risk of contracting any type of zoonotic disease and seek treatment when necessary.

“First, it’s important to be aware that these germs are normal and don’t indicate poor animal care.

This is inherently a part of raising animals,” Klumb said. “Because of this, we can never eliminate the risks, but we can minimize the risks.”

While most are harmless to animals, there are some diseases that cause illness to both animals and humans.

One distinguishable zoonotic disease is rabies, where the central nervous system is compromised.

“Dairy farmers should be vigilant with their animal care and take note of anything abnormal, even if it’s just going off feed. Each disease is different,” said Schwabenlander of the diseases Minnesota BOAH monitors, like rabies. “Keep your vet on speed dial.”

In animal care, farmers should maintain high standards of biosecurity – creating housing environments that promote good hygiene and using equipment in a way that prevents the spread of diseases from animal to animal or animal to humans.

“It really comes down to good biosecurity and good husbandry,” Schwabenlander said regarding the diseases Minnesota BOAH is involved with.

Those interacting with livestock should wash their hands before doing any sort of hand-tomouth activity, and change out of barn clothes and shoes before entering the main part of the house to reduce their chances of getting sick.

“We know it’s pretty realistic that you’re going to milk the cows with your kids around. Try to keep them in a clean playpen and keep their bottles covered or keep the bottles out of the barn altogether.

Also, they really shouldn’t be doing much for chores either,” Klumb said. “I know we sound like we don’t want people to have fun, but we just want people to be safe.

We know being on the farm is a wonderful way to grow up and kids so learn so much, but there’s a lot of time for that. When they’re that young, we need to keep them safe and healthy.”

With Hosch’s experience, contracting Q fever was likely inevitable, but he now shares his story in an effort for the dairying community to be aware of the underlying health risks of farming and precautions to take when working with animals.

Organic farmers converge in D.C. Organic Trade Association’s Farmers Advisory Council y-in brings in producers from across the U.S. On the surface, Minnesota organic dairy farmer Ruth Buck and California organic almond grower Steve Koretoff might not have that much in common.

Taking care of a 120-cow dairy herd in Southeastern Minnesota and managing a 500-acre almond farm, processor and packager in Central California don’t have a lot of overlap, except in this case one critical component – a deep and unwavering commitment to organic agriculture. That commitment was on prominent display earlier this week when Ruth and Steve joined 20 other organic producers from across the nation to take part in the Organic Trade Association’s second Farmers Advisory Council y-in.

“I love to talk about the importance organic farming has had on the stability of our family farm, allowing us to stay small and hopefully pass it on to the next generation,” said Buck. “It is important to continue to support organic research and to regulate organic farming so the USDA seal means something to the consumer. My hope is that by talking to our lawmakers, it puts a face to organic farming. I hope it is just the beginning of the conversation, and hope to extend an invitation to our farm so that our new Rep can see it in person.”

Koretoff agreed.

“We want to get freshman Congressional members to commit the same or more support to agriculture and the organic industry than the members they have replaced. Engaging elected ofcials is crucial for the agriculture industry.

Many members of Congress do not personally know any farmers or have any experience with the agricultural industry, even more so for the organic agriculture industry,” said Koretoff. “Capitol Hill needs to hear directly from farmers on issues such as trade, the ways organic agriculture can help mitigate climate change, and of course the Farm Bill.”

The 20 members of the Organic Trade Association’s Farmers Advisory Council who participated in the two days of advocacy on Feb. 5 and 6 in the nation’s capital were a wide-ranging group representing 11 states, and organic operations ranging from a ve-acre produce farm in South Carolina to a 4,000-plus acre grain farm in Montana, from a rst-generation cattle-raiser to a fth-generation dairy producer. The diverse group included growers of grains, citrus, vegetables and other specialty crops, dairy farmers, egg and livestock producers. The Farmers Advisory Council represents over 8,000 certied organic farmers nationwide.

Almost 50 lawmakers and a standing-room-only organic roundtable The focus of the y-in was to meet with new and incumbent members of Congress, to familiarize the freshmen lawmakers with organic, and to discuss the implementation of the organic provisions in the 2018 Farm Bill. The farmers met with House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Michael Conaway, visited the ofces of 48 other Senators and Representatives, and had meetings with a half dozen agricultural associations including the National Farm Bureau Federation, the National Young Farmers Coalition, and the National Farmers Union. The group also hosted a standingroom-only organic farmer roundtable for congressional staff on important organic issues.

“This second y-in has been a fantastic opportunity for FAC farmers to be able to share with policymakers and staff the current issues that organic farmers face across the country,” said Perry Clutts, co-chairman of the Farmers Advisory Council and organic dairy farmer from Ohio. “Through our direct contact, we can help our lawmakers understand how present federal programs are working, what changes might work better at the farm level, and what new programs would best assist farmers directly.”

Laura Batcha, CEO and Executive Director of the Organic Trade Association, stressed the importance of meeting with freshmen lawmakers: “Our new lawmakers might not have a full understanding of the important public/private partnership that has supported organic and enabled the organic sector to ourish. They need to understand the role that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program (NOP) plays in maintaining and enforcing the strict federal standards that guide the organic sector, and in Congress’s role in its oversight of NOP.” Megan DeBates, Director of Legislative Affairs and Coalitions for the Organic Trade Association, said that providing NOP now with the adequate funding to carry out and implement all the 2018 Farm Bill provisions relating to organic, especially those dealing with enforcement and oversight, is critical.

“NOP’s budget is funded by annual appropriations determined by Congress, and we need Congress to fund organic the levels authorized in the Farm Bill and make sure that appropriations legislation is passed on time,” said DeBates.

“Also, USDA has not taken action on rulemakings for organic that have been stalled like the origin of organic livestock.

We need this administration to support organic by allowing these voluntary regulations and standards to move forward.

The industry depends on the regulations evolving with consumer expectations.”

Projected Class III milk price average unchanged

The USDA issued its latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report on Feb. 8. The report was not issued in January due to the government shutdown. The 2018 milk production estimate was lowered, based on available data through December. The 2019 forecast was reduced on lower expected rst-half dairy cow numbers and continued slow growth in milk per cow.

2018 production and marketings were projected at 217.6 and 216.6 billion pounds respectively, down 200 million from the December estimate. If realized, 2018 production would still be up 2.1 billion pounds or 0.97 percent from 2017.

2019 production and marketings were estimated at 220.1 and 219.1 billion pounds respectively, down 500 million pounds on both. If realized, 2019 production would be up 2.5 billion pounds or 1.1 percent from 2018.

The 2018 and 2019 fat basis import forecasts were reduced from December on recent trade data and lower expected cheese and butterfat imports. Fat basis exports were unchanged for 2018 but the forecast was raised for 2019 primarily on strong expected demand for butter and butterfat products.

Projected 2018 skim-solids basis imports were raised on current trade data while the 2019 import forecast was unchanged. Skim-solids basis exports for 2018 were lowered, but the 2019 export forecast was raised from December on anticipated strong demand for nonfat dry milk (NDM).

Dairy product prices for 2018 were adjusted to reect available December price data. The 2019 cheese price forecast was lowered while butter, NDM, and whey price forecasts were raised from December.

The projected 2019 Class III milk price average was unchanged from the December estimate. Look for a 2019 Class III average of about $15.05 per cwt., unchanged from the December estimate, and compares to $14.61 in 2018 and $16.17 in 2017.

The Class IV price was projected to average $15.95, up $1.10 from the December estimate and compares to $14.23 in 2018 and $15.16 in 2017.

This month’s 2018/19 U.S. corn outlook is for lower imports, production, food, seed, and industrial use (FSI), feed and residual use, and stocks. Corn production was estimated at 14.42 billion bushels, down 206 million on reduction in yield to 176.4 bushels per acre. Harvested area was down fractionally. Total corn use is down 165 million bushels to 14.865 billion. FSI use was lowered 40 million bushels, reecting reductions to corn used for ethanol and other industrial use. With supply fall-

ing more than use, corn stocks were lowered 46 million bushels and the season-average corn price received by producers was unchanged at a midpoint of $3.60 per bushel.

U.S. oilseed production was estimated at 134.0 million tons, down 1.5 million from the previous report.

Soybean production was estimated at 4.54 million bushels, down 56 million. Harvested area was estimated at 88.1 million acres, down fractionally from the previous report. Yield was estimated at 51.6 bushels per acre, down a half-bushel.

The soybean crush forecast was raised 10 million bushels to 2.09 million. Soybean meal production was unchanged as the higher crush is offset by a lower extraction rate. Lower supplies and increased crush are partly offset with a 25-million-bushel reduction in exports. Ending stocks were projected at 910 million bushels, down 45 million from the previous forecast. The 2018/19 U.S. season-average farm price forecast for soybeans was projected at $8.10 to $9.10 per bushel, unchanged at the midpoint. The soybean meal price was forecast at $295 to $335 per short ton, up $5.00 at the midpoint. The soybean oil price forecast of 28.5 to 31.5 cents per pound was unchanged at the midpoint.

This month’s 2018/19 U.S. cotton forecasts include slightly lower production, mill use, and ending stocks.

Production was reduced 200,000 bales due to small declines outside the Southeast. Ending stocks and mill use were reduced 100,000 bales each while exports were unchanged.

Cash cheese prices continued to strengthen in the Valentine’s Day week as traders anticipated the February 19 Global Dairy Trade auction and the shortened President’s Day holiday Week. The week will include Milk Production reports for December and January and December Cold Storage data.

The Cheddar blocks climbed to $1.5925 per pound Wednesday, highest CME price since mid-October 2018, but closed Friday at $1.58, up 5 1/4-cents on the week and 4 cents above a year ago. The barrels nished at $1.4350, up 6 1/4-cents on the week, highest since September 13, 2018, but 4 1/2-cents below a year ago when they jumped 12 cents, and are at an unsustainable 14 1/2-cents below the blocks. Sales for the week included 6 cars of block and 20 of barrel.

The West received its own version of Arctic weather this week, with cold and snow causing more than the usual challenges. Over 1800 dairy cows died in the Yakima Valley of eastern Washington, according to the Yakima Valley Dairy Farmers Association, where low temperatures and high winds took a huge toll.

out that “The increase in U.S. cheese prices has been augmented by the dollar, which continues to gain ground against the Euro, New Zealand dollar, and Mexican peso. The strong dollar makes U.S. cheese more expensive when the price is converted to importers’ currency.

Tariffs put U.S. cheese at a further disadvantage in Mexico and China, according to the DDR. Those continuing tariffs drew sharp criticism by the Wisconsin-based American Dairy Coalition (ADC) which charged; “Mexico imports nearly a quarter of the U.S. dairy industry’s exports annually. It’s a critical $1.4 billion marketplace. And it’s one that President Trump continues to risk damaging permanently and unnecessarily. Locked in a trade war since May, Mexican leaders are setting aside American business connections that took decades to build as our neighbors to the south nd new sources of cheese, butter and other products.

This should have changed in November when Trump declared success with his newly rechristened U.S.-Canada-Mexico Trade Agreement replacing NAFTA. In retrospect, it was a disingenuous statement: The administration has not lifted steel and aluminum tariffs on Mexican and Canadian products, and in response those countries are refusing to sign the pact or lift retaliatory tariffs, impacting dairy products and other items, the ADC stated.

Winter weather remains the topic of discussion among Midwest cheesemakers, according to Dairy Market News. Cheese production remains slower as plant managers work on inventories and weather-related production stoppages have slowed or stopped production in some cases. Contacts suggest cold weather and snow in the upper-Midwest were affecting both milk and cheese deliveries.

Western cheese makers stated that new business deals are harder to come by and demand for American style blocks and barrels is slow. “Buyer interest seemingly ebbs and ows as the market price for cheese rises and falls. Cheese is moving steadily through regular contracts, but contacts say there does not seem to be anything right now that will give a boost to sales.”

As to the strength in cheese prices, some contacts suggest that fourth quarter consumption was better than expected and the industry is seeing a bit of a rell from the winter holidays and Super Bowl. Others say marketers are getting prepared for upcoming export tenders while others believe more cheese is moving into aging programs. They agree that inventories are long and “demand does not seem to be at levels hoped for.”

Some say the absence of market production and stock number reports due to the government shutdown made it difcult to get a picture of supply and demand.

Manufacturers say cheese output is running mostly seven days per week, but winter storms slowed cheese output in some regions due to challenges transporting milk and the need to rell the pipeline following the storms.

Writing in the February 8 Milk Producers Council newsletter, Sharp says “Cheese processors in the nation’s largest dairy state are now paying more for milk using the Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) formula than they would have under the previous rules.”

“Dairy Market News reports, many manufacturers are running full schedules at their cheese facilities, but some contacts suggest a few processors are starting to ease back on cheese production and diverting milk intakes toward Class IV uses. That’s excellent news for California dairy producers in particular and for dairy product prices in general,” according to Sharp.

“The shift in the product mix will mean a greater share of California dairy producers” milk checks is based on the much higher Class IV price. Incrementally lower cheese output will slowly lift cheese prices relative to where they would have been had California stuck with its previous milk pricing formulas. Of course, the reverse is true for milk powder pricing,” Sharp concludes.

Cash butter saw its Friday price at $2.25 per pound, down 4 1/2-cents on the week but still 15 cents above a year ago. 24 cars exchanged hands on the week.

Central contacts suggest that butter sales have been stunted recently, while others maintain sales are seasonally slower, but meeting expectations. Cream is readily available for churning and butter producers are taking advantage of it and “booking loads well ahead of time, indicating what they suggest may be a sign of near to mid-term oversupplies.”

Western processors are proactively running churns to clear ample supplies of cream. Cream is plentiful throughout the West and some distressed loads are moving out of the region at discounted prices. Bulk butter is being intensively stored for use later in the year. Retail and club store butter sales are generally good, according to DMN, and while producers would prefer to make more sales now, they are content with current inventory levels and are managing their supplies efciently while others are churning at a higher rate than last year.

Grade A nonfat dry milk saw the weeks closing at 98 3/4-cents per pound, down three-quarter cents but 28 1/4-cents above a year ago. 30 cars exchanged hands on the week, 23 on Thursday alone, highest single day total since April 25, 2018.

The dry whey closed Friday at 35 1/4-cents per pound, down 1 1/4-cents, with 42 cars nding new homes on the week, a single-day record 15 on Wednesday.

Plummeted dry whey shipments to China have pulled whey prices lower. FC Stone reports that African swine fever has reduced soy meal demand in China and some estimates say meal feeding is off 20 percent. African swine fever has also been detected in Japan.

FC Stone warns; “This issue will get worse before it gets better. How much damage will be done to China’s 700 million plus hog herd and how long will it take it to recover is still unknown. Some analysts think it could take 6-7 years for China’s hog herd to fully recover.”

The Dairy and Food Market Analyst (DFMA) says dry whey shipments to China have fallen 20 million pounds or 40 percent. Total exports of whey products have decreased 18 percent and exports of milk powder were down 13 percent.

Analyzing the November Dairy Products report, the DFMA stated; “Total milk powder output was the biggest surprise falling 22 million pounds, down 12 CLIP AND SAVE

percent. Skim milk powder production plummeted 27 percent, and nonfat dry milk production decreased 7.7 percent. Despite the declines, milk powder inventories grew by 35 million pounds.”

The European Commission sold another 1.3 million pounds of skim milk powder from its Intervention program the week of Feb. 4, leaving 6.6 million pounds.

The DFMA says “The remaining stocks are believed to be low quality. The milk powder sold for a minimum price of 83 cents per pound, up a penny from the previous sale.” Tenders will occur just once a month beginning in March.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) members accepted 17 offers of export assistance from CWT the week of February 11 to help sell 2.7 million pounds of Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, 220,462 pounds of butter, and 440,925 pounds of whole milk powder to customers in Asia, the Middle East, and South America from February through July.

The sales raised CWT’s 2019 exports to 15.547 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 928,146 pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 6.931 million pounds

In politics, President Trump signed a Senate and House-passed compromise bill Friday to fund the government and allocate just under $1.4 billion for a border “wall” of sorts. He also declared a national emergency in order to provide additional funding for the wall he seeks to build on the border with Mexico.

The Administration also released its proposal to update the Waters of the U.S. Rule (WOTUS) water quality regulation on Valentine’s Day. There will be a 60-day public comment period on how the Environment Protection Agency and the Army Corp of Engineers will regulate waterways under the Clean Water Act. Bob Gray, editor of the Northeast Dairy Farmers Cooperative’s newsletter, reported that the update would “replace the rule that was promulgated in 2015 which proved to be confusing and vague in its provisions for compliance by the agriculture community.” EPA will also hold a public hearing on the new rule, says Gray.

CME Group spot cheddar cheese prices have been trending higher. With the delay of this write up to readers it is difficult to give a price benchmark relative to the current market. Based on February 15 cash trading, Class III futures could be projecting as high as a 15.75 settlement price.

Class III settlement values can be projected six weeks prior to the actual settlement of the specific contract by using the spot cash prices and plugging them into class formula calculations. This is not an exact science as much of the cheese traded is priced using formulas which incorporate premiums to various industry benchmarks such as the spot trading averages.

Historically, Class III futures will settle at a premium of 2-3 cents to the cash spot cheese price. In recent months this premium has been closer to 8-10 cents. As mentioned above, using an 8-10 cent premium on top of the current spot trading cheese value a 15.75 settlement price for Class III can be expected. If formulas go back to their old 2-3 cent premium, Class III futures would project a settlement value closer to 15.10. Although it is difficult to

know how the buyer and seller pricing formulas are being negotiated, it is highly probable that Class III settlement values will be moving into the 15’s soon.

Milk powder prices have retreated in both whey and nonfat dry milk categories. Underlying market conditions continue to build a more supportive posture, but buyers have purchased a lot of cheap product that needs to be moved through their marketing systems. Once this begins to dry up look for another leg higher in the milk powder side of the dairy business.

New Zealand milk production will likely wind down earlier than normal as pastures are being impacted by an expanded drought situation. Moisture deficits across the entire dairy production area are quickly becoming more critical as rain and soil water profiles are well below normal averages.

ver 20 years ago, I was a local sports reporter, agriculture reporter and sales person for the Sauk Centre Herald in Sauk Centre, Minn. My weeks included writing and taking photos at high school sporting events, writing an ag story, and spending a day and a half each week driving to accounts to talk advertisement.

My life changed dramatically with one simple meeting that occurred in 1998.

Local dairy farmer, Jerry Jennissen, and his insurance agent strolled into the Sauk Centre Herald ofce with a proposal.

The purpose of his visit was to talk to myself and Dave Simpkins, the Sauk Centre Herald owner, and Jeff Weyer, the sales manager for the paper, about an idea that was percolating in his brain.

At the time, Jerry was a part of a committee focused on nding ways to help stimulate the dairy industry in Stearns County. He thought there should be a newsletter, paid for by advertising, for all dairy farmers in the county – the largest dairy county in the state of Minnesota. Its purpose was simple: to share ideas from farmer to farmer.

I was quite intrigued, because I grew up a dairy farm, had ve brothers who milked cows, and when I wasn’t working for the paper, I was helping my brother, Chuck, on his farm.

The four of us brainstormed about news sources for the paper as well as how the paper could be funded and its frequency.

The editorial content consisted of a story about the large number of Mennonite families who moved to the Sauk Centre area and a column I wrote about the worst day on the farm. I had to dump water out of the gutter after a drinking cup became stuck and ooded the barn, including the middle aisle. Lee Mielke’s “Dairyline” and farm markets were other news items in the 12-page tabloid.

Several local businesses provided advertisement to reach the farmers.

A twice-monthly dairy newspaper was born.

Almost instantly the area dairy farmers and businesses were galvanized and got behind our mission.

With a staff only able to dedicate part of their time to the paper, Dairy Star developed as best it could in the rst few years.

As I took care of editorial content, Jeff worked with businesses to provide advertising, and graphic designer and dairy farmer, Janell Westerman, designed the advertisements and then I would lay out the information. Andrea Borgerding joined the staff to help with the news aspect and layout. This was all accomplished as we maintained our other roles with the town newspaper.

We were adamant on publishing the best dairy newspaper we could. This was our golden opportunity, and we didn’t

The popularity of Dairy Star took off almost immediately. It was not long before we expanded outside the Stearns County line with more news and more farmers to share the news with.

To accommodate the new area of the newspaper, we hired Laura Seljan, a full-time sales representative in southeast Minnesota and continued adding freelance writers and photographers to our staff. Those individuals would mail their photos to the ofce in Sauk Centre and fax their stories so an in-house employee could retype the article and prepare it for print.

With an incredible staff and willingness from farmers to let us visit with them, Dairy Star was off and running.

Within a couple years, we were providing every dairy farmer in the state of Minnesota a copy of our periodical.

The number of dairy farmers at the that time was around 7,500.

As the farms declined across the state, we felt a strong obligation to our advertisers to keep the circulation up.

We introduced the paper to northern Iowa and eastern South Dakota in the early 2000s.

A larger circulation meant several more full-time employees, as well as printing several versions of the paper based on location so local faces were still present in some articles and main features, like “Dairy Prole” and “From Our Side of the Fence.”

By 2010, we once again expanded our circulation into America’s Dairyland. We added eight counties along the western side of the state and have continued to add counties in Wisconsin throughout the years.

From the rst issue in 1999 to today, we are privileged to continue being a reliable news source for the dairy industry and look forward to remaining steadfast with our motto in the years to come: All dairy, all the time.

From it’s humbling beginnings when I just had an idea of having a newsletter specifically for dairy farmers in Stearns County to now with the number of farmers across a wide area who have access to it, Dairy Star has stayed true to its purpose of sharing stories of dairy farmers with dairy farmers. My hope was always that it would have a postitive impact on the mood of people and the attitude of the industry, and to some degree I think we’ve seen that. I’m really proud to have played a part in its beginnings, and proud of both Mark Klaphake and Jeff Weyer, who took an idea and turned it into something really impressive. Congratulations!

A partnership through 20 years

In the last 20 years Dairy Star has developed features that have become tried and true staples of the publication.

Each serves a purpose in educating and providing insight from those who are a part of the dairy community.

From Our Side Of The Fence

DAIRYING ACROSS AMERICA

This feature has been a staple in Dairy Star since nearly the rst issue. A farmer favorite, this portion of the paper features a handful of people who answer the same questions about a different topic each issue. It is always found in the rst half of the rst section.

While the topics can be serious, such as the depressed milk price, the state of the political climate or management techniques that have been benecial on the farm, we also like to talk about the lighter side of life. People have shared about their farm dogs, old trucks and watching the Olympics. Although most of the time the questions are asked of dairy farmers, others in the industry have also been able to share their opinion in this feature – bankers, equipment dealers, heifer raisers, milk haulers, hoof trimmers, A.I. technicians and so many others.

Dairy farming looks different on each farm of Dairy Star’s coverage area. With the differences so drastic across a small region of the United States, we thought it would be intriguing to learn more about dairy operations throughout the country.

“Dairying Across America” was developed to highlight the industry elsewhere. Not only has this feature been entertaining, but also insightful. Within the last ve years, we extended our reach, globally. Now, once a month, we speak with farmers in other countries, gaining an understanding of international industries while nding similarities despite cultural differences. In these features, we have visited with farmers in Alaska to Hawaii, and Japan to Brazil.

Women In Dairy Originally called, “Women in Jeans,” this feature is one that focuses on the strong dairy farming women.

On many dairies, children work right alongside their parents. We wanted to give the youngest dairy farmers the chance to have their opinion in the paper, too. This feature usually brings a smile or laughter to readers. The questions ask about favorite and least favorite chores, what they are learning in school, and what they would want their farm to look like if they had one of their own.

We have interviewed kids who want to be future donkey farmers to ones that will have a farm site with bright orange buildings covered in shining purple sparkles, and everything in between.

Columnists

Dairy prole This feature allows farmers to share their advice about dairy farming, give a glimpse into the history of their dairying career, and what they most enjoy about milking cows. Like other content in every issue, “Dairy Prole” puts another local face in the newspaper.

A Day in the Life Started in 2010, we wanted the “A Day in the Life” feature to focus on photos of the everyday life on a farm. While many chores are the same from farm to farm, it’s fun to see the differences each day presents. This is a unique feature that allows our staff to work alongside farmers for the day and capture the honest day-to-day tasks of dairy farming. We have spent many a days in the milking barns before sunrise, in the cab of a tractor during spring planting or fall harvest, at youth sporting events and in the show ring at county fairs, alike. This powerful feature is another unique way to tell every farmer’s story.

Since Dairy Star’s beginning, columns have been one of the paper’s most anticipated reads. Each columnist provides a unique perspective to dairy farming, whether they are current or retired farmers, industry allies or young dairy advocates. We proudly print around 10 columns in each issue.

Living two weeks at a time Learn how Dairy Star is published When one issue is printed, another is already in the works.

Dairy Star was rst published on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month – a schedule that is maintained today.

As sales representatives travel the four-state region visiting with customers and forming relationships with new businesses, the editorial staff remains busy planning content for the upcoming issue.

After the newspaper is sent to the printer on Wednesdays, staff members use the following two days in the week to gather ideas and form a plan for the upcoming work week.

By Monday, most reporters have started on their interviews for the upcoming issue.

The staff spends time looking for unique stories. For every issue, Dairy Star staff strives to interview as many dairy farmers as possible. The more editions that are published, the more dairy farmers keep saying how their favorite part about the paper is reading about their neighbor and what they were doing on the farm.

Late that week, information and photos are emailed in and

content is proofed. At the same time, advertisements are designed or submitted.

When print week arrives, it is all hands on deck to get the newspaper ready to go. Advertisements are laid out on the pages and editorial content is reviewed to decide where it will be placed in the paper.

This process takes place over Monday and Tuesday.

While the advertisements remain consistent throughout the two versions of the paper – one for Wisconsin readers and one for Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa readers – the editorial content is tailored to each region.

By Wednesday morning, the paper is closely reviewed one last time before it is sent to the printer, House of Print, in Madelia, Minn.

From the printer, the newspapers are shipped to mailboxes across the coverage area, with many dairy farmers receiving the latest copy

by Friday.

After the newspaper is printed and in your hands, the same issue is placed online in the form of e-editions, as well as viewable content on the website.

From that point on, staff work by the motto, “We are only as good as our next issue,” and the planning begins again.

Staff recalls memorable times with the paper

In September 2008, I was visiting a sheep farm where they milked the sheep and made cheese. By mid-interview, we strolled out to the paddocks to see how they moved the sheep in their grazing system. The farmer I was interviewing carried a large pole and mentioned their llama may not take well to me being there. That should have been my first warning sign. When the llama caught sight of me from 50 yards away, it ran incredibly fast at me like it was charging me. The farmer had to muscle the llama away from me and basically keep it from trampling me. The llama would not back down so we made our way back to the farm site with this llama hovering over me the entire time. Needless to say, I now keep my distance when I see a llama.

Staff recalls memorable times with the paper

In the hundreds of interviews I have done, everyone has been more than welcoming, but not one compares to the morning I had with Duke Pennings, of Blomkest, Minn., last April. I arrived at the 86-year-old’s dairy farm just after sunrise to talk with him about his dairying career. He eagerly ushered me into his home where he had bacon on the stove and pancakes on the griddle. We enjoyed breakfast together as I listened to Duke tell story after story of his time milking cows. After taking a few photos for the article, I was ready to leave. Rather than a goodbye handshake, Duke opened his arms wide and hugged me. When the article was published, Duke called both my husband and I, thanking me for talking with him that morning and portraying his career in such a way. It is moments like these that I so enjoy about my job.

Mark Smith, a young dairy farmer near Long Prairie, Minn., lost his wife, Deanna, to a bull attack one night while doing chores in December 2010.

The Smiths always did chores together, and Deanna was the centerpiece for Mark and the kids. I remember conducting the interview and feeling so awful for Mark and his five children who were all under 10 years old. I will never forget him holding his youngest daughter and shedding tears while we did the interview. Since that point, Mark, originally from Wisconsin, moved closer to his parents and has remarried. I continue to reach out to Mark to see how he is doing.

In 2006, I visited Matt and Nels Goblirsch’s family dairy in Wabasso, Minn. The purpose of my visit was to view and report on the very first robotic milkers installed in the state. The brothers were (and still are) energetic and upbeat. They told me the robots had enabled them to expand their operation to 250 cows without the need for hiring additional employees.

They showed me the data the robots collect on each cow and explained how this helped them improve the management of their herd. The whole idea of robots milking cows was a bit overwhelming. I felt as though I had stepped into an episode of “The Jetsons.” Robotic milkers have since become commonplace in the industry.

My favorite experiences while working with Dairy Star have been being able to meet so many different people involved in the dairy community and experience a different side of the industry from what I had been involved with in my previous jobs. I have also enjoyed traveling to many parts of Wisconsin that are off the beaten path and where I have never been before, even though they are in my backyard.

On a warm, sunny June day in 2014, I spent a few hours following Kris and Mike Banse along with their kids, Jenna, Kailey, Logan, Mason and Nicole, around their farm for the “A Day in the Life” feature, which is one of my favorites. I took pictures and chatted with them throughout the morning while they did their chores on their dairy farm near Eitzen, Minn. They were all so welcoming and didn’t mind me tagging along, which made my day even better. When I returned to their farm in the afternoon for more photos, the kids had saddled up one of their horses for an afternoon ride. I told them about my childhood dream of owning a horse – how I would cut out classified ads and put them on my dad’s dinner plate or how I would jump at the chance to ride the neighbor’s horse whenever offered. I was surprised when the Banse kids asked if I wanted a turn in the saddle. Of course I said yes. That June day with the sun shining down, the Banse siblings let me ride their horse around the yard, fulfilling a small portion of my childhood dream.

We just expanded to the southeast part of Minnesota and did not have a full-time reporter in the area yet, so I was responsible for finding and interviewing the “From Our Side of the Fence” participants each issue. This particular assignment I was supposed to find two bachelor dairy farmers and ask them the questions about how difficult it can be to find a significant other as a dairy farmer. The second gentleman invited me in and offered me a seat at the kitchen table and introduced me to his parents. The last question was not worded well as it essentially read, “Why aren’t you married?” After I asked the question, you could have heard a pin drop in that kitchen. The farmer’s parents stared at him intently, and then his mom piped up and said, “Yes, I would really like to know that answer to that question, too.” Luckily, this gentleman’s quick wit saved the moment, and I quickly wrote his answer down and got out of there. I do run into him from time to time, and we still laugh about that interview.

My favorite memory involves a summer morning several years ago while I was on a farm interviewing a producer. We had warm rains that morning and the yard was scattered with puddles. As we were walking across the yard, she stopped suddenly, reached down and removed her sandals. Carrying the sandals in one hand she headed over to a nearby puddle and stood in the middle. She had a large smile on her face as she looked up to the sky and began wiggling her toes, squeezing mud between them. Shortly thereafter she returned and without saying a word we continued our interview. That was a life lesson I will never forget.

Since the beginning we have worked hard to satisfy the many tastes of our readers. We feature dairy news including politics and natural disasters, but our niche is talking about the human element of dairy farming.

We have covered it all. Children who came back to farm with their parents, young farmers who started what they hoped would be a long dairy career, as well as the incredibly heart-stopping stories about the passing of some of the wonderful dairymen and women in our area due to accidents on the farm.

As we saw the paper becoming more established, we also experimented with features that have become tried and true staples of every issue. In the rst year of publication, “From Our Side of the Fence,” was unveiled.

Dairy farming coverage has not only been our job but a part of our life. Many times, as a staff, we agonize when we hear a family was suffering from a loss or a young producer was sending their cows down the road because they could not make it.

It is safe to say our staff, which consists mostly of dairy farmers’ sons and daughters, cares deeply about what you do and who you are.

We realize our success would not be achievable without you, the thousands of dairy farmers who have shared your time with us. We are immensely grateful you take time out of your days to share your stories. At all hours of the day you have come from the barn to the kitchen or the milkhouse with a hat and a smile on and let us write and photograph you.

The past 20 years have only been made possible because of you, dairy farmers. And, we know moving forward our success in the next 20 years will only be as great as you help us make it, because we are only as good as our next issue.

Finland farm ourishing for the future Robotic milking units, facilities entice fourth generation

LUOPAJÄRVI, Kurikka, Finland – When Liisa Vuorela was a young girl on her family’s dairy farm, during the workload peaks of summer, she swore she would never marry a dairyman.

“Swearing is the best,” Vuorela said. “Next summer will be 25 years since we got married.”

Vuorela and her husband, Juha, in cooperation with Jari Pentinmäki, own Koskenoja Farm, a thirdgeneration 200-cow dairy farm located near the village of Luopajärvi in the municipality of Kurikka, Finland.

The Holstein, Ayrshire and Brown Swiss herd is milked in four Lely robotic milking units. The Vuorelas own 400 head including the youngstock and some beef cattle. The animals are housed in four barns, one of which is located 2.5 miles away.

“Next, we need better places for heifers,” Vuorela said. “We continue to develop our expertise with the entire work team, focusing for better nancial results.”

The Vuorelas also hire contract work and youth aid with chores during the summer and on weekends.

sible for the animals while Pentinmäki takes care of feeding. Vuorela’s husband manages eld work and the farm’s procurements and investments.

“All others do everything they are commanded,” Vuorela said. “In summer time, we have also a trainee.”

The Vuorelas converted to milking with robots in 2013 once their newest six-row freestall barn was built.

In April 2014, a third robot was installed followed by a fourth robot in April 2015.

“Robots free capacity is currently about 34 percent,” Vuorela said. “The last year was really heavy for the cows because of the long period of warm weather in the summer. This was the main reason why there was too many unplanned cullings. Right now, it seems that during February or March, we will hit the maximum capacity with the robots.”

Vuorela said production costs in Finland have been on the rise. And, although the number of cows in Finland is not falling, farm numbers are on the decline while the remaining farms are expanding.

“So, everything what comes from the milk is going away right now,” she said. … “[The average farm size] is 40 cows per farm at the moment, but the farm size is growing fast. Many farmers quit right now; about 8 percent stop milking the cows every year.”

While there exists a tilt in the Finnish dairy industry, Vuorela said the farm provides for their lifestyle.

“All bets are in milk, so we are all in,” she said.

The Vuorelas breed for a long-lasting cow with a good body condition score and a high milk yield. They do not breed for the show ring; however, Vuorela said looking at a nice cow is always a pleasure.

“We focus on cattle breeding and making dairy industry more noticeable,” Vuorela said. “We take care of elds and the environment in every way. We milk producers are the elite class of carbon bonding.”

The milking herd has been fed a TMR for the last 22 years, beginning when the rst freestall barn was built in 1997. The main component of the TMR is grass silage.

“The cows receive concentrate a maximum of 2.2 pounds per 22 pounds of produced milk from the robots. … From our own elds, we get also grain, which is crushed and preserved with a biological preservative,” Vuorela said.

Rapeseed, dry hay, minerals and vitamins, salt and dried distiller’s grain comprise the rest of the TMR. Vuorela said they are able to take three cuttings of grass per year.

“We can enjoy four seasons,” Liisa said. “In winter, nature is covered with snow and the temperature may be well under negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit. In the spring, eldwork starts normally in May. Silage cutting takes place, according to the summer weather, typically beginning in June, late July and August to September.

The last summer will be in memories because of the very long period of warm weather; over 86 degrees for very long time.”

“There are several dairy farms close by,” Vuorela said. “We have 24/7 maintenance contract with the robotic dealer.

Within two hours, they have a promise to get the robots milked again if there come some major problems. Dairy plant is 15 miles and the robot service is 19 miles from the farm. We live close to the growth center, so that all kinds of services are available.”

The Vuorelas sell their milk to Cooperative Maitosuomi; the milk is then processed by Valio, the biggest milk processor in Finland, said Vuorela.

“The closest Valio dairy plant … specializes in the production of butter,” Vuorela said. “They make also different types of curds and margarines.”

Vuorela said an aspect unique to the Finnish dairy industry is the high-quality water available for livestock.

“The Finnish night in the summer provides a tasty yield from the elds for the animals to eat,” she said. “One of the nest things is the clean water. Animals drink water that is also good enough for people.”

In addition to the farm, the Vuorelas host 35-50 groups on their farm annually – from daycare children to retirement age, the Vuorelas are eager to share their lifestyle with others.

After learning about the breakfast on the farm events held in the Upper Midwest, the Vuorelas hosted a Brunch in the Barn event.

“A large kitchen was built in the milk room and a brunch of over 20 dishes was

served to over 500 people,” Vuorela said.

“At the same time, people were able to see how cows are nowadays living and taken care of.”

Despite spending years working in a wide range of professions, Vuorela said she is contented at the dairy farm.

“Milk production and cows are my way of life and dearest one,” she said.

“I can follow the wonders of nature with following the growth of new calves and new grass. I meet interesting people every day and a good network and cooperation with other farms have become the only way to survive in this business.”

Gunnink passes unexpectedly Douglas John Gunnink, 65, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 19. Doug is survived by his wife, Janet Gunnink; mother, Yvonne Gunnink; sons, Zach (Manessa) Gunnink of Gibbon, Andrew (Emily) Gunnink of Cologne; grandchildren, Hariette and Sylvie of Gibbon, Andrew (Emily), and anticipated grandson, of Cologne; sisters, Judy Hible of Princeton, Arlene Gunnink of Bismarck, North Dakota; brothers, Ralph Gunnink of Boyd, Montana, James (Louise) Gunnink of Princeton; and many nieces and nephews.

Doug was born on November 4, 1953 in Milaca, Minnesota to John and Yvonne (Osborn) Gunnink. He grew up in rural Princeton on a purebred Holstein dairy farm.

After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Education. His teaching experiences began in Albany Area Schools and at Pine City Technical College in Agriculture and Farm Management. He advanced his skills while working for Rural Ventures, Honeywell Corporation.

On October 18, 1984 Doug married Janet Walch, whom he had met while teaching at Albany, Minn. They had two sons, Zachary and Andrew. Leaving their Grasston farm and work at Pine City, they moved to Gaylord, Minn. to an organic farm to be The University of Minnesota County Extension Agent dairy specialist for Sibley County. From there he joined the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Organic and Sustainable Program. Most recently he had been an active consultant for organic and sustainable farmers throughout the United States.

DBA picks new president The Dairy Business Association’s board of directors elected a new president and vice president, and the membership chose three new directors during the organization’s annual business meeting today at the Dairy Strong conference.

Tom Crave of Crave Brothers Farm in Waterloo, Wis., an incumbent, will lead the board as president. He has been a dairy farmer for 38 years and has served on his local town board. Mike North, who is stepping down from that role, will become president emeritus.

Incumbent Amy Penterman, who owns and operates Dutch Dairy in Thorp with her husband, was chosen as vice president. Penterman also has worked as a crop insurance agent for 19 years and was in farm lending for 15 years.

DBA members elected one new corporate representative, Jack Hippen, and they chose two new farmer representatives, Kevin Collins and Robert Nagel. Steve Bodart of Compeer Financial was re-elected to a corporate position.

Hippen is North America manager for STgenetics and has been involved in the dairy equipment and dairy genetics industries for 25 years.

Collins has dairy farmed for many years in Greenleaf, Wis., and has served as chairman of his local town board and on its zoning committee. He is engaged in lobbying on the federal level as a member of the policy committee for DBA’s sister organization, Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative.

Nagel is a partner and manager of several Wisconsin dairies and has experience as a large-animal veterinarian. He has been directly engaged with DBA on local and state legislative efforts.

Collins and Nagel replace Cody Heller and Lloyd Holterman.

Incumbent board member Lee Kinnard was named secretary and Bodart will be treasurer.

Endres receives National DHIA veterinary student scholarship The National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) Scholarship Committee selected Elizabeth Endres, University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, as one of three college of veterinary medicine students receiving a $1,500 scholarship.

Selection committee members evaluated applicants on overall interest as a veterinarian planning to work in dairy, involvement in dairy medicine and extra-curricular activities, and interest in using dairy software and dairy records to aid in dairy management and in improving animal health. To be eligible for a National DHIA veterinary student scholarship, applicants must be third- or fourth-year college of veterinary medicine students, enrolled at a college that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.

Raised on a 300-cow Registered Holstein farm in Wisconsin, which now milks 700 cows, Endres knew at an early age that she wanted to become a veterinarian. As an undergraduate dairy science student, Endres participated in the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge and collegiate dairy judging. In veterinary school, she served as AABP co-president. Following graduation, she plans to work in a private food animal practice and train Spanish-speaking employees. Endres ne-tuned her Spanish-speaking skills while interning on a 3,300-cow dairy in California.

Todd County seeks dairy princess candidates The American Dairy Association of Todd County is seeking candidates to participate in this year’s dairy princess and dairy ambassador program. Dairy princesses serve as goodwill ambassadors for the dairy industry through appearances that help explain dairy farmers’ passion for taking care of their animals and land while providing wholesome and nutritious food for people locally and throughout the world. The princess contest will be held on March 23, at the Browerville community center.

A candidate for dairy princess must be a high school graduate by July 1, 2019 and not yet 24 years old by July 1, 2019. A dairy ambassador has to have completed 9th, 10th or 11th grade by July 1, 2019. A candidate must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident. She or her parents must be actively engaged in the production of milk for sale to a licensed plant during the current year. A candidate also qualies if she or her parents are employed on a dairy farm in a dairy-related capacity, or if a sibling has taken over the home farm. Additionally, she would qualify if her or her family custom raise animals that will produce milk or lease

animals in exchange for work on that farm.

The dairy princess program is sponsored by the county’s dairy farmers in conjunction with Midwest Dairy Association’s Minnesota Division and the dairy checkoff.

Serving as a county dairy princess is also the rst step toward becoming Princess Kay of the Milky Way. Ten nalists will be selected to compete for the Princess Kay title in August. County dairy princesses may apply to be considered as a nalist for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way title while attending a statewide promotion training workshop to be held this spring.

At all levels of competition, contestants are judged on their communication skills, personality, enthusiasm for dairy promotion and general knowledge of the dairy industry.

New event for students at Farm Technology Days On Tuesday, July 23 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days (WFTD) will host it’s ďƒžrst-ever Ag Career Day. “This event is targeting FFA chapters around the state, students grade 7-12,â€? said Peter Curran with the fundraising committee. “Students will arrive via buses, called the ‘Cheesehead Express,’ he added.

Once on the grounds, students will go to the Future Generations Center to start the interactive career scavenger hunt, powered by Allďƒ&#x;ex Livestock Intelligence.

Each student will be wearing a lanyard that holds a cow RFID tag. Students will then be given a clue sheet leading them through 12 stops in tent city where they will need to scan their RFID tag with an Allďƒ&#x;ex wand.

Upon completion of the 12 stops, students will return to the Future Generations Center to write thank you notes, sponsored by Culver’s Thank You Farmers Project, and will be eligible for prizes.

The trips will be FFA Chapter sponsored events and be provided free transportation, a free Ag Career Day t-shirt and free admission to the show.
