Ensuring markets for your milk

Panel focuses on farmstead processing, cooperative marketing

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – A challenge in the dairy industry is ensuring a market for the milk produced.

Some producers are looking at farmstead marketing of their milk and other value-added products, while others see cooperatives as the best avenue for marketing their milk.

A panel discussion about marketing milk with farmstead and cooperative marketing was held at the Grassworks Grazing Conference Feb. 1 in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Panel members included Norm Monsen, a market development specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection; Andy Hatch, co-owner of Uplands Cheese Company; Dan Smith, the CEO and president of Cooperative Network; and

Kevin Kiehnau, the national eld staff manager for CROPP Organic Valley.

A retired dairy farmer, Monsen works in the areas of dairy development, especially in the areas of farmstead creameries and on-farm processing.

“We know that dairy is tough now, but in these kinds of times, this is when innovation happens,” Monsen said. “People start getting big ideas. We saw it in the early 2000s, a resurgence and rebranding and renaissance of Wisconsin dairy. People like you come up with big ideas of how to do something different or bring back something from the past.”

Monsen said that while nding the prot in a business is important, expense must be determined rst to determine the prots available to be made.

Monsen referred to what he called an innovation curve when it comes to taking the risk of entering the world of on-farm processing.

“It’s risky and fun to be in the lead; there are prots and more fun to be in the middle,

but if you’re at the tail-end, you’re just watching the opportunity go away,” Monsen said. “I think we’re someplace in the middle of that curve right now.”

Hatch operates Upland Cheese Company outside of Dodgeville, Wis., along with Scott Mericka. Upland Cheese Company was established in 2000 by the Gingrich and Patenaude families, during what both Monsen and Hatch

referred to as the renaissance of Wisconsin cheese. Hatch and Mericka purchased the farm and creamery in 2014.

They milk 200 grass-fed cows from March through December, and process it onfarm. About 120,000 pounds of cheese is made from May through October, while the cows are on pasture. Upland Turn to MARKETING| Page 3

All aspects of the business are located on-farm, with the two owners working full time, along with three full-time and approximately eight seasonal employees.

“What you’ll learn here is a seed,” Hatch said. “To grow that, you want to start with people like Norm, and ultimately, you’ll want to get to people like me. There’s a really solid sense of fraternity among small-scale cheesemakers in Wisconsin. If you’re contemplating trying to start your own cheese business, you should visit no less than ve other plants. You should spend hours talking to people like me.”

Hatch said what made Uplands Cheese stand out in its early years was the return to older practices, such as rotational grazing. The business was grown carefully and the owners kept tight control on the business and the product, keeping it all under one roof.

“Wisconsin has done a really good job of keeping cows, and a poor job of keeping the farmers.”

Hatch said the ability to be optimistic about developing a farmstead market exist in the control the producer/ processor have over product quality, branding and reputation, margins and the nimbleness to adapt to market changes. On the downside, farmstead processing requires a broad range of skills in addition to those required to run a farm, including things like making and aging cheese, marketing and sales, and management of hundreds of urban consumers. On-farm processing demands a large capital investment, and Hatch said those demands will continue to increase under modern food safety standards.

Smith began his professional career as a dairy farmer, transitioning his family’s farm from connement to grazing. After selling his herd, he entered state government before moving into

the private sector, eventually becoming the CEO and president of Cooperative Network.

“Everything that we do relies on protability,” Smith said. “No one wants to do the work that agriculture requires without protability, and we’re struggling for that now. We’re facing increased costs of production, new technologies, competition for resources and capital, and consumer preferences.”

Smith said our country needs more people to enter agriculture, but you cannot force people into an industry that is not protable.

“We all value diversied, familyoperated farms that are engaged in the community,” Smith said. “Wisconsin has done a really good job of keeping the cows, and a poor job of keeping the farmers. It’s a drain of the rural economy, society and culture of Wisconsin.”

Smith said cooperatives rise from a common need, and follow seven principles: voluntary and open membership; democratic member control; member economic participation; independence; education, training and information; cooperation among cooperatives; and concern for community.

“When we look at the dairy industry today, and how are we going to solve some of these issues, the members are going to have to step up and determine what type of agriculture, rural communities and economic policies they want,” Smith said. “We need to choose and create, not just accept whatever happens to us as agriculturalists.”

Kiehnau retired from organic dairy farming before joining the eld staff at Organic Valley. He said marketing with a cooperative is an advantage to producers because of the numbers involved and the say that cooperative members have in the marketing of their milk.

“One of the biggest issues I see with direct marketing is that producers need to know the farm-side, the sales-side and the marketing-side,” Kiehnau said.

“That’s really a tall order for someone to ll.”

Kiehnau said the focus of the cooperative model is to take care of its members, which he said is something not seen in other business models in agricultural marketing.

Growing, thriving Mossings Dairy continues expanding more than 10 years after moving from England

EGAN, S.D. – The past decade has seen numerous changes at Mossings Dairy in Egan, S.D. Mossings Dairy is owned and operated by Moss and Ingrid Jopson and their family. The Jopsons have two daughters, Sarah and Kayleigh, and two sons, Nick and Mike.

When the Dairy Star rst visited Mossings Dairy in 2007, the Jopsons had started milking their herd of 480 crossbred cows in their new dairy facility. The Jopson family had relocated to South Dakota from Windermere, England. Windermere is located in the Lake District, about 90 miles north of Liverpool.

In England, the Jopsons had been milking 110 Holsteins on the 130-acre farm they owned.

They bottled all of their milk and delivered it to more than 500 doorsteps every day.

They wanted to expand their operation, but it was nearly impossible to nd additional land and the regulations were crushing. The Jopsons decided to move to America and establish a new dairy operation.

Mossings Dairy has steadily expanded over the intervening years to its current size of 1,420 Holsteins in milk and 162 dry cows. Add in the young stock and Mossings Dairy owns a total of 2,674 head.

The Jopson family has also grown. Nick and his wife, Megan, have two children, Sam, 1, and Makenzie, 13. Mike has a son, Declan, 4. Kayleigh is now an emergency room nurse.

She and her husband, Mark Lee, have three children Isabell, 9, Ethan, 4, and Daniel, 1. Sarah, a hospice nurse, opted to remain in England. Sarah is getting married in April.

The Jopsons have endured their shares of ups and downs over the years.

“We had only a year under our belts when the low milk prices of 2009 hit us,” Ingrid said. “That wasn’t part of our plan. We found ourselves at the bottom of a very steep learning curve.”

Moss agreed.

“One of our rst mistakes was going with crossbreds,” Moss said. “The crossbreds just weren’t holding up into their second and third lactations. We also felt that they had more than their share of foot troubles. There is money in producing more volume, so we switched over to Holsteins.”

Another thing the Jopsons have changed is their views on ventilation.

“Our rst freestall barn was naturally ventilated with air cell sidewall curtains,” Moss said. “We were unhappy with that system, so we closed up the ridge vent and switched the barn to tunnel ventilation. That has worked very well for us. All

of our barns now have tunnel ventilation. And instead of air cells, we now use translucent polycarbonate siding on the sidewalls.”

By 2010, the Jopsons had grown their herd to 680 head.

They decided to add another 150 feet onto their freestall barn and expand to 880 cows.

“By 2015, we were housing 1,000 head in 783 free stalls,” Moss said. “We either had to expand our facilities again or sell some cows.”

The Jopsons opted to add more facilities. Their latest addition, which was completed this past November, is a 100by 537-foot tunnel-ventilated freestall barn. The barn has two pens with 192 sand-bedded free stalls per pen. And, the new barn was designed with further expansion in mind.

“This new barn is just the rst quarter of what we have planned for this facility,” Moss said. “We may build another quarter off it in a few years. If we have some good years, we may build the other three quarters of the barn within the next ve years. At that time, we will likely add a rotary milking parlor. We’ll have to see what the banker says.”

As with many dairy operations, marketing milk has been an ongoing challenge.

“We forward contracted our milk a couple of times,” Ingrid said. “One year we came out ahead, and the next year we came out behind.”

Moss said they continue to market their milk.

“We’re now using puts and calls and the services of a broker to price our milk,” Moss said.

“We’re also taking advantage of the new Dairy Revenue Protection program. These tools enable us to leave the top side open. We have learned that we should lock in a prot whenever we can.”

Other changes at Mossings Dairy include going from twice-a-day milkings in 2007 to milking three times per day in the dairy’s double-28 parlor. The number of full-time employees has ballooned from six in 2007 to 16 today.

The herd at Mossings Dairy is producing 85 pounds of milk per head per day with 3.75 percent butterfat and 3.15 percent protein. Their somatic cell count has been hovering at or below 78,000.

“We aren’t doing anything special,” Nick said. “We’re just doing all of the basic things as best as we can. We make sure that the cows get a well-balanced TMR every day, and we bed the free stalls with fresh sand on a regular basis. We don’t have a magic formula.”

In 2008, Moss’ sister Heidi and her husband, Alistair Hird, emigrated to South Dakota from England and purchased an acreage near Mossings Dairy.

6 months of age. When the heifers reach 6 months, they are sent to Heimes Brothers, a calf raiser located in Wynot, Neb. The heifers are brought back to Mossings Dairy at two months prior to calving. All of their bull calves are sold at birth.

Nick and Mike each have farmsteads located not far from Mossings Dairy. Mike and his partner, Hannah, keep the faroff dry cows at their place. Nick and Megan house the closeup cows in a newly-expanded bedding pack facility on their acreage. Cows give birth at Nick and Megan’s farm and are then hauled one mile back to the dairy facility.

Despite all of these changes, one thing has remained the same.

“We still don’t own any land other than our acreages where our homes and the dairy is located,” Moss said. “We still buy all of our haylage and corn silage from local farmers.”

“When we get done with the silage chopping, we hire the Flandreau football team to help us cover the silage pile,” Nick

said, noting they put up 15,000 to 20,000 tons of corn silage each fall. “We ll the boys up with pizza and give the team a contribution. Everybody wins.”

Many paths to starting a dairy

Journey graziers, lender share stories, ideas

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Getting a foothold in today’s dairy economy can seem overwhelming to a young farmer looking to start his or her own dairy farm.

New producers and an agricultural lender shared their opinions on how a producer can begin their career during the Grassworks Grazing Conference Feb. 1 in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Young journey graziers Ryan Heinen of Pewaukee, Wis., and John Richmond of Colfax, Wis., were joined on the discussion panel by Ron Bula, a nancial advisor with Compeer Financial in Baraboo, Wis., to share their thoughts and experiences on entering the dairy industry in today’s volatile markets.

Heinen graduated from the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship in the spring of 2018. Following his graduation, he was unable to locate a farm he could afford in the area where his family wanted to locate, but with the help of the DGA he found a position as a land and livestock manager on a 420-acre farm near Waukesha, Wis. “It’s a beginning farm, and it was supposed to be developed into housing, but the current owner purchased it with the intention of preserving it as a

There is also a 10-acre vegetable operation on the farm.”

According to Heinen, the farm used to be a dairy farm and the owner’s plan included resurrecting a dairy herd on the property, but the dairy market did not allow for that to be part of the immediate plans.

Heinen put 100 acres of pasture to use by nding a local beef farmer to work with, custom-raising beef on the pasture land, allowing him to begin to

develop the pastures. He also has been working at managing the wooded areas of the farm.

Heinen earned ve dairy cows during his apprenticeship. Those, along with a few purchased calves, encompass the beginning dairy herd. The cows raise the calves on pasture and are milked once a week by hand to supply milk for Heinen’s family.

“There is a really nice, old dairy farm on the barn, built in 1958,” he said. “But there hasn’t been dairy cows in the barn for over 20 years. I got to thinking about how often that happens;

that once a dairy farm sells its cows the cows come back to the farm.”

Future plans include starting an onfarm creamery with the possibility of making and selling grass-fed cheeses or butter. Heinen said the farm’s close proximity to large population areas is conducive to direct-marketing.

Despite an interest in the dairy industry, Richmond had no direct access to a farm. Richmond found out about the DGA while he was attending the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

“Charles decided he would be comfortable being my loan ofcer,” Richmond said. “That’s a big part of getting into the dairy industry. You either have to have someone who’s willing to work with you nancially, or you have to start small.”

Richmond grazes 150 milk cows and calves his herd bi-seasonally. Although the farm is around 500 acres, only 71 acres is mechanically harvested.

“The way I look at it, with this dairy economy, the best way to stay in it is starting up your tractor less,” Richmond said. “That’s a very big cost. Fence and electricity are pretty cheap compared. Cows handle outside just ne. You might have to breed for it. You just need to breed for what animals can thrive in your operation.”

Richmond reiterates that getting started in the dairy industry is not easy, but he believes grazing is the best way to be in the dairy industry today.

“Why would you spend the time and money harvesting the feed and taking it to the cows, when the cows will do it for you?” Richmond said.

Speaking from a lender’s point of view, Bula said he has seen a lot of changes in the dairy industry throughout his career.

Bula cited tough conditions facing beginning dairy farmers including difcult cash-ows, depressed prices and the emergence of larger farms.

“Your opportunity is to be more nimble than the bulldozers coming at you and gure out ways as a smaller producer that you can make things work,” Bula said.

He cited possible opportunities such as microdairies, and making and marketing a value-added product. Bula encourages diversity, especially for smaller farms. According to Bula, the depressed dairy economy makes it cheaper to enter the business than it has been before.

“Cattle are selling for a fraction of what they have, equipment and facilities are all pennies on the dollar,” Bula said. “The biggest thing is making sure you have a market.”

His advice for new dairy farmers is to approach a potential lender with a plan. Bula said the rst thing those looking at developing a dairy business plan need to look at is making sure the farm is viable and sustainable, providing a decent income for the producer.

“You want to be able to bring a business plan to your lender with your goals and objectives laid out,” Bula said.

He encourages new producers to get certain assets, such as cows and equipment, bought and paid for before purchasing real estate.

“Henry Ford said, ‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right,’” Bula said. “The only thing in this business you can control is your own attitude, and what you do with it.”

The Guest of Honor is given to an active contemporary dairy leader for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the dairy industry. It has been awarded every year since 1949 when Dean H. Kildee was named the rst Guest of Honor.

Additionally, the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder is an award which recognizes active, progressive dairy producers who, through their expertise in managing a dairy breeding herd based upon sound genetics and business principles, serve as a model of success for fellow breeders throughout the country.

All these award honorees portraits and accomplishments are on permanent display in the National Dairy Hall of Fame at the National Dairy Shrine Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wis. Nominations or applications must be submitted on ofcial forms by March 15. Get to know Jake Twohey of Stewartville, Minn. the area. I have been in charge of the dairy portion the past few years.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in 4-H and FFA.

Who do you look up to and why? My older brother, Tim. He returned to the farm after college three years ago and now farms with our dad. I admire his work ethic, his easygoing nature and the quality of work he does. He’s picky about doing things the right way.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite?

I like that I can be involved in the dairy aspect of these organizations. I can judge, show and talk about cows. I prefer 4-H because I think it is more competitive.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. In 2017, I was a member of our county’s 4-H dairy judging team that won the state contest.

Because of this, we had the opportunity to compete in the judging contest at World Dairy Expo. I was second individual overall and our team was fourth overall. It was completely different than any other judging contest I have been in. It was so cool to be in Madison and on the colored shavings. Plus, I did better than I expected I would. In FFA, the best experience I have had was attending the national convention in 2017.

What’s your favorite social media and why? I don’t have any social media. People get so attached to their phone. I

We had problems with the skidloader on the heifer farm. The fuel gelled up and I was battling that for several days.

I changed the fuel lter a half dozen times in four or ve days. I hauled manure every day and made sure I scraped the spreader off. I have a barn cleaner room in the barn that houses the tractor and spreader. I had to charge the loader tractor. It took twice as long to do the daily work because I did many things that normally I don’t do for preventative reasons. I’m glad it only lasted two days; the cold weather stresses me out.

A neighbor of mine that milks had froze and split water pipes.

Our biggest challenge was keeping the tractors running; they kept gelling up. We put some fuel treatment into the tractor and then drove it in the barn to warm it up. We also had to change some lters. Another problem we had was the blowing snow drifted over the drain pipe from the milk house to the manure pit. It blocked the water and then it froze up. We also usually add water to the TMR, but we didn’t those two days. We have an insulated freestall barn, so we didn’t have much trouble there.

I have never seen it that cold in my career. It was cold and miserable.

I mixed feed before the cold spell so I didn’t have to start a tractor. We dumped the TMR on a pile and loaded it into a feed cart with a skidloader. We switch some cows, but they were only outside for milking, otherwise we kept them in the barn. We fed the calves three times a day and gave them a gallon of milk morning and night, and water at noon.

For the heifers and dry cows outside, we gave them better quality baleage and upped the amount of feed, and tried to keep them dry. We had two calves born and kept them in the dairy barn.

The -36 was the coldest I have ever seen it. We had a water fountain freeze and the diesel in the fuel barrel gelled up. We cranked the silo unloaders up four times and let them clean out. We had the skidloader in the heated shop.

Thursday morning when I headed out to the barn we had two cows lying by the feeder content as can be.

We fed more milk to the little calves in the huts. We also put more grain and corn silage in the heifers ration. We had one waterer freeze up. We have a heated shop so that really helped. We put the skidloader, TMR mixer, telehandler and tractor in there. The beef cows are in a pasture close to the Holsteins and for them we mixed a better ration. We had to wear a facemask when we went to check the cattle.

We added extra calories for the animals a couple days in advance. The intakes were down during those two days.

We have a freestall barn and bedded extra deep, and just had some chapped teats. We tarped some of the openings on a south facing cattle shed.

We had 10 calves 2 days old or younger and put them in a heated shop. We spent a lot of time chipping our 14 outside waterers.

None of the electric motors for the silos or harvestore would start and we kept ipping the breakers. We took the belts off and the let the motor run without a load for ve minutes. A couple drinking cups near the door froze, as well as a waterer. We kept the cows in those days; otherwise they usually go out daily. We kept a close eye on the wood burner and kept a lot of wood on hand.

I live ve miles from the farm, and I got up early to check on everything. I couldn’t leave the cattle out. Usually I leave some out four or ve hours a day. We put straw bales around all the doors to keep the warm air in. The skidloader wouldn’t start one day so we put the battery charger on it and put heat in the diesel.

The block heater in our loader tractor decided it wanted to quit. We feed out of a bunker, and we need that to peel the feed down. It took a little more time to scrape the silage down. It started but wasn’t happy. The valve froze up in one of the fountains. We fed our beef cows a couple more scoops of silage. Tuesday, when the wind blew, they came up by the windbreak and never left the yard. On Wednesday they were gone all day.

Wood Co. Farm Tech Committee offering grant opportunities Non-proďƒžt, public and community groups in Wood and surrounding counties that have ideas to increase agricultural-related education opportunities or enhance rural communities and agriculture awareness are being encouraged to apply for grant funding. The money is coming from the proceeds of the 2018 Farm Technology Days show held last summer near Marshďƒželd.

Education Grants are intended for projects that generate or enhance educational opportunities that increase knowledge and understanding of agriculture and food systems for Central Wisconsin residents.

Community Grants can be used to create, implement or enhance an agricultural-related community project that has a long-term beneďƒžt to the area.

Grant requests can range between $500 to $50,000.

Preference will be given to projects that develop leadership skill building opportunities for youth, families and adults. The committee is also looking for proposals that would beneďƒžt a large population of residents in Wood County and surrounding areas.

The deadline to apply for grant funding is April 1.

Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders’ Association sponsors essay calf contest One fortunate Wisconsin youth will be the recipient of a registered Guernsey calf during the Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders’ Association (WGBA) annual convention on March 15-16 in Oshkosh, Wis. This calf will be awarded to the youth who writes the best essay on their choice of two topics: (1) “What a Guernsey calf would mean to me� or (2) “The Guernsey cow is important to me because...�

Essays are currently being accepted for this 21st annual contest. Entrants do not need to have a Guernsey background or be from a Guernsey farm. The essay winner will be announced during the youth luncheon at the WGBA state convention on March 15.

Contest guidelines include: • Essay should be a minimum of 250 words on the topic of “what a Guernsey calf would mean to meâ€? or the topic “the Guernsey cow is important to me because‌â€? • Contest is open to Wisconsin youth ages 10-17 • Entrant should include plans for housing, responsibilities or plans for caring for the calf and show opportunities in the essay • Winner must agree to exhibit the calf at shows and give a report on the calf at the WGBA annual meeting after winning • Winner must be willing to join the Wisconsin Junior Guernsey Breeders’ Association for a one time fee of $15.

Holstein Association USA recognizes top BAA herds Holstein Association USA has released the lists of the top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2018 classiďƒžcations. Herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classiďƒžcation program receive an overall BAA for the herd.

The BAA value provides a way to compare the score of a herd average to the average of the breed, taking into account age of the animal and stage of lactation. “Holstein Association USA appreciates and recognizes outstanding Registered Holstein breeders and herds of all types and breeding philosophies, and the Holstein classiďƒžcation program provides an unbiased evaluation of hundreds of thousands of Holstein cows each year. Holstein Association USA seeks nominations for annual awards Nominations are now open for the 2019 Holstein Association USA annual awards including Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder, Elite Breeder, and Distinguished Leadership awards.

The Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder Award recognizes signicant accomplishments of young Registered Holstein® Breeders, ages 21 to 40. Submissions can be made for individuals, a couple, or business partners.

The Elite Breeder Award honors a living Holstein Association USA member, family, partnership, or corporation who has bred outstanding animals and thereby made a notable contribution to the advancement of U.S. Registered Holsteins.

The Distinguished Leadership Award is given to an individual who has provided outstanding and unselsh leadership that has contributed to the improvement of the Holstein Association USA and/or dairy industry.

Applications for the Elite Breeder and Distinguished Leadership awards are considered for three years after submittal.

Honorees will receive their recognition during the 2019 National Holstein Convention, June 24-27, in Appleton, Wis. Additionally, a scholarship is available to students interested in agriculture who plan to pursue their master’s degree in business administration. The Robert H. Rumler MBA Scholarship awards $3,000 to a qualied individual pursuing their MBA at an accredited university. Applications for this scholarship must be received by April 15.

Brown Swiss Youth Heifer Program accepting applications for 2019 Youth looking for support to purchase their rst Brown Swiss should consider applying for the Nelson McCammon Youth Heifer Program offered by the Wisconsin Brown Swiss Association. The organization is accepting applications between now and Feb. 15.

“The Nelson McCammon Youth Heifer Program helps youth from all breeds interested in working with dairy cattle gain hands-on experience with high-qual-

ity Registered Brown Swiss, explains committee chairperson Josh Hushon. “By working with Brown Swiss through this program, our hope is that youth will learn to appreciate the many outstanding qualities and rewards the Brown Swiss breed offers.”

Award recipients will receive a grant for 50 percent (up to a $1,000 total) towards the purchase price of a Registered Brown Swiss female of any age. The program is intended to run for two years with the applicants being between the ages of 9 and 18 for cows and 9 to 19 for heifers as of Jan 1. Applicants must be residents of Wisconsin and become members of the Wisconsin Junior and the National Junior Brown Swiss Associations.

Since the project started in 2013, 15 youth have purchased Registered Brown Swiss heifers thanks to the generosity of long-time Brown Swiss breeder and youth supporter Nelson McCammon, who generously donated the funding for the program via his estate when he passed. Mr. McCammon was a mentor to many, and a past winner of the Klussendorf Trophy.

Winners will be presented at the Wisconsin Brown Swiss Annual Meeting, March 2, at the Sleep Inn & Suites Conference Center in Eau Claire, Wis. DCHA offers $1,000 scholarship The Dairy Calf and Heifer Association (DCHA) is now accepting applications for its scholarship program. The goal of this long-standing program is to invest in the future of the dairy industry by offering nancial support to students focused on careers in agriculture.

“Education is the foundation of a successful dairy industry,” says T.J. McClure, DCHA board president. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s producers, veterinarians, advisers and consultants. We are proud to offer a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student who plans to work in the calf and heifer segment after graduation.”

The annual DCHA scholarship is awarded to a student currently enrolled in an agriculture-related program at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have completed at least one year of post high school education. An individual may only receive the scholarship once.

Are you thinking about how to transfer your farm business or land to the next generation? Or are you a beginning farmer entering a farm business. University of Minnesota Extension is presenting 12 workshops on farm transition and estate planning across Minnesota this winter. These workshops are no cost to attendees, but pre-registration is required.

Workshops will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with lunch included. The locations are Hinckley on Feb. 19; Floodwood on Feb. 20; Faribault on March 7, St. Cloud on March 12; Alexandria on March 13, Thief River Falls on March 26, and Detroit Lakes on March 27. The workshop covers family communications, farm goal setting, business structures, inheritance and transition, estate and gift taxes, and retirement planning. Farmers at any stage, from beginning to retirement, can benet from the workshop materials.

This workshop is a partnership of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and University of Minnesota Extension with funding support from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and collaboration with SCORE. These organizations also collaborate to offer farm transition planning retreats.

“How to Add Value to Your Dairy Farm without Adding More Cows!” a value-added dairy workshop, will be offered at Coyote Moon Grille in St. Cloud on Feb. 20 and Cascade Meadow Wetlands & Environmental Science Center in Rochester on Feb. 21. This half-day workshop will use an interactive and fun approach to teach participants how to creatively consider adding value to their existing dairy operation. The keynote speaker, Dr. Becca Jablonski has worked with dairy producers in New York and Colorado to successfully add value to their existing dairy. Various approaches include value-added milk processing on the farm, diversifying the farm with new livestock, incorporating agrotourism, or adding food grade enterprises.

The event will allow dairy producers to build a network of peers who will learn from each other through engaging sessions and evaluate if value-added is the correct strategy for their farming operation. There is no cost to attend the workshop. The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. with the class starting at 10 a.m. and will conclude around 2 p.m.

Dr. Becca Jablonski is an Assistant Professor and Food Systems Extension Economist in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Colorado State University. Dr. Jablonski’s has a nationally recognized research and extension program focused on the food system. Understanding the behavioral health of cattle and making continuous improvements to facilities and management practices will help today’s dairy farmers provide the best care and get the most production from top-performing dairy herds. The 2019 PDPW Dairy Wellbeing Workshop presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) will feature tours and leading experts to help take cow-comfort practices to the next level.

Two repeating sessions of the Dairy Wellbeing Workshop will be held on Feb. 12 and 13, at the Tundra Lodge Resort Waterpark & Conference Center in Green Bay, Wis. The sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

Workshop trainers include Dr. Jennifer Van Os, PhD, assistant professor of dairy science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW-Extension animal welfare specialist, and Dr. Nigel Cook, DVM, chair of the Department of Medical Sciences and professor in food animal production at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, and manager of the Dairyland Initiative.

The workshop will also include a guided tour of American Foods Group and an opportunity to hear from beef buyers, market experts and USDA meat inspectors.

Workshop presentations will include a focus on behavioral health of cows and how farmers can provide appropriate facilities and outlets to meet cows’ behavioral needs, as well as discussion of how to keep cow health and behavior in mind when making plans to build or remodel buildings on dairy farms.

UW-Extension will offer a number of meetings across the state for farmers interested in learning about the new Dairy Revenue Protection program, a new federal insurance tool, with a quarterly payout to dairy farms when milk revenue falls below their insured revenue level. Mark Stephenson Director of the UW-Center for Dairy Protability will provide a comprehensive overview of the Dairy Revenue Protection program and updates to the FSA Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP), as another tool for dairy farmers when milk prices are low. Important changes to the MPP have been introduced in the Farm Bill that may make this program worth a second look.

Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) kicks off its 2019 DCRC webinar series with “Evolution of Timed AI (articial insemination) Protocols and Overview of the DCRC Reproductive Management Strategies Protocol Sheet for Dairy Cows.” Presented by Paul Fricke, University of Wisconsin dairy science professor and extension specialist in dairy cattle reproduction, this webinar reviews DCRC’s updated dairy reproduction protocols. The one-hour webinar begins at 2 p.m. Central time on Feb. 15.

While estrous synchronization protocols have helped enhance reproductive success on many dairy farms, there is not one “right way” to approach reproductive management, including “synch” programs. “Many strategies can be implemented to achieve excellent 21-day pregnancy rates by increasing the AI service rate alone,” said Fricke. “Newer fertility programs increase both service rate and pregnancies per AI (P/AI).”

In response to high levels of both personal and nancial farm stress, ISU Extension and Outreach is making available two “Farm Couple Getaways” aimed at farmers wanting to take advantage of activities to improve farm family communication, work on farm or family goal-setting, farm transition or just would like a weekend away to discuss farm and farm family issues. The rst “getaway” will be held Friday and Saturday, February 15-16 at Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah. The second “getaway” will be held March 22-23 at the Best Western Plus Hotel in Dubuque. The “getaways” run from 12:30 pm on Friday to 3 pm on Saturday. There is no cost to attend the program as food, lodging and other expenses are being paid for by grants and sponsorships. However, there is a $50 per couple deposit to hold each reservation, refundable on the second day of the getaway.

Past “Farm Couple Getaways” have proven to be benecial to farm couples. They are a very productive and delightful time to discuss items of importance to help farms and families be successful”, says Larry Tranel, ISU Extension Dairy Field Specialist.” Each “getaway” will consist of eight farm couples and our Extension facilitators. There are also pests common to row crops, including herbicide resistant weeds, soybean cyst nematodes, soybean aphid, and other insect and disease pests becoming more problematic across Minnesota. Small grain added to a rotation offers the opportunity to diversity cropping systems in central and southern Minnesota to manage these challenges. This program is designed to help farmers determine if small grains can work on their farm and in their rotation.

This program will provide the tools needed to make small grains a successful crop in their operation, including cutting-edge research on production agronomics, variety selection, disease identication, fungicide use, fertility, quality, equipment, and economics. The second workshop ‘Milk Mooo-ves: How the Dairy Checkoff Makes the Most of Your Milk Checkoff Dollars,’ begins at 2:45 p.m. and features Chad Vincent, CEO from Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and Molly Pelzer, Chief Experience Ofcer from the Midwest Dairy Association. As milk checkoff organizations have been around for decades, many dairy farmers are unaware of their work to promote and protect dairy’s image among customers. Long gone are the days of focusing on print and television advertising. Workshop attendees will learn what creative strategies are being implemented by checkoff organizations today as they focus on building markets and promoting dairy while showcasing the passion of dairy farmers.
