Kuipers move from the Netherlands, thrive in Texas By Cassie Olson

HICO, Texas – When Clemens and Karin Kuiper decided to begin their dairying career, they knew big changes were necessary. Having both grown up on dairies in the Netherlands, there was not much room for them to farm in their home country. The Kuipers now own two dairies in Texas. Participants on the Minnesota Milk Producers Association Texas Dairy Tour had the opportunity to learn about the Kuipers’ 3,040-cow dairy in Hico, Texas. After graduating from college in the Netherlands, the couple wanted to begin their career in dairy production. Other family members were managing both of their home dairies at the time, so returning to either of their family’s farms was not feasible. Land is difcult to come by in their home country, so the Kuipers knew they had to begin looking elsewhere. As a result, the family moved to East Germany where they purchased a tiestall barn and 22 cows to begin their dairy careers nearly

Although the Kuipers stayed in East Germany for 10 years, the limited ability to expand proved to be a challenge once again in 2006. “Europe is smaller in size and is very crowded,” Clemens said. “There’s only room to farm on a small scale.” The Kuipers made the decision to move to America to
seek out their next farming opportunity. They rst looked in the Midwest in hopes of starting there. However, the unique opportunity to enter the dairy industry in Texas drew them to the Hico area. “The main reason we moved here is that it is common to lease a farm before purchasing,” Karin said. “We wanted to invest our money into the cows
rather than the buildings to start off with, giving us the opportunity to eventually grow bigger.” In December 2006, Clemens and Karin sold their farm, herd of 220 cows and milk quota to make their move to the United States. They purchased a herd of 1,200 cows and began their milking career. Since making their initial move 10 years ago, the
couple has grown their dairy’s size. They now own the farm on which they started, and are milking 1,640 cows on location. In addition, they lease another dairy farm with 1,400 cows. The couple employs a total of 35 full- and part-time employees between the two dairies. Moving to America has proven to have its benets as well as challenges. While their cows are producing well, Clemens said the summers are tough. “The hot, dry summer gets very hard on the cows. It can be difcult to get cows pregnant,” Clemens said. The hottest period of year is between July and September. Clemens said the cows take it hardest when the heats peak in September. “The cows coming off of their dry period take it very hard in September; they need a lot of attention,” Clemens said. The cows still perform well. The Kuipers are seeing a 75-pound per day average on their home location and an 80-pound average on their other dairy location. They are currently milking twice a day and hope to increase to three times per day in the near future. On their home location, the Kuipers are milking in a double-16 parallel parlor. Because of the number of cows, milking twice a day takes 22 hours to complete. The couple is cur-

STEPHENVILLE, Tex. – Since 1991, the Texas Association of Dairymen (TAD) has been the advocate and unied voice for the Texas dairy industry. TAD works on behalf of the state’s dairy farmers with governmental bodies tackling issues such as the environment, animal welfare, food safety and regulatory policies. TAD Executive Director Darren Turley met with Minnesota Milk Producers Association Texas dairy tour participants Feb. 18 at the Tarleton State University Southwest Regional Dairy Center to discuss the Texas dairy industry and tour the dairy center. Dairy in Texas has changed greatly over Turley’s lifetime. “When I was growing up in Dublin, Texas, a herd of 100 to 200 cows was considered the norm,” Turley said. “Over time, however, people realized how cheap our land prices were, and soon we saw an inux of large dairies.” Because of the availability and low price for land, a large migrant population began to settle in Texas during the late 1980s and ‘90s. from California as well as from European countries, such as the Netherlands, moved to the area, capitalizing on the land and resources the state had to offer. Herd sizes increased from 600 to 1,000-cow herds, and the industry began to peak in the late 1990s. “We had very little issues as far as the environment is concerned,” Turley said. “Cows grazed on pasture in minimal connement and the Western dairies that moved here brought in new ideas. We saw a lot of growth in the dairy community.” That was until the early 2000s, when a shallow lake in Waco, Texas created talk of water pollution. “The lake in Waco is where the city draws all of its drinking water. The government began to point ngers at the dairymen surrounding the Bosque River,” Turley said. “We didn’t know we were getting shot at until it was too late.” Stricter environmental regulations were quickly implemented. Dairies were given 60 days to comply with certain EPA standards, including the mandatory implementation of lagoons. “We had to get political; it was all over the news. Every time it would rain, a big, black helicopter would go up into the sky and y over Waco, looking for manure pollutants on dairies,” Turley said. Following the Waco incident, a

The Minnesota Milk Producers Association hosted 25 dairy farmers as they traveled south for the Texas Dairy Tour, Feb. 15 to 19. Minnesota Milk’s dairy tours are designed to give farmers the chance to explore the dairy industry while taking the opportunity to get off the farm. When producers arrived in Dallas on Feb. 15, their rst stop was the George W. Bush Presidential Center. The Center is home to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Muse-
um, and the George W. Bush Institute. Those on the trip learned about the Bush presidency, the 9/11 terrorist attack and the War on Terror. Following the tour, trip participants put on their dancing shoes and enjoyed a night out at Cowboys Red River, where they learned Texas two-step dances. The next day, the group departed for the Sixth Floor Museum, the location where John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The museum highlighted the JFK presidency, the assassination and the investigation that followed. Following the tour, participants traveled to AT&T Stadium for a
tour of the largest NFL stadium before going to TopGolf for private golf lessons and socialization. On Feb. 17, the group traveled to Fort Worth. On their way, the group stopped at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. The garden is a public venue whose mission is to promote art, enjoyment and knowledge of horticulture, and provide opportunities for education. Following the tour, the group traveled to the famous Fort Worth Stockyards. They received a tour of the historic district and witnessed the daily cattle drive down Exchange Av-
enue. Wrapping up their evening, the group watched the American Rodeo Semi-Finals, where over the course of the weekend, 600 qualiers competed for a place in the nals which were held at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 19. On their nal day in Dallas, the group got an in-depth look at the Texas dairy industry. The morning began at Hillside Dairy Farm, owned by Clemens and Karin Kuiper in Hico, Texas. The couple milks 3,040 cows between two locations. Those on the trip toured the Kuiper’s home farm, which has 1,640 cows, and learned about the couple’s immigration from the Netherlands in 2006. Following the tour, the group went to the Southwest Re-
gional Dairy Center of Tarleton State University near Stephenville. Executive director of the Texas Association of Dairymen Darren Turley spoke to the group about the state’s dairy industry. Following the presentation, the group toured the research facility and learned about the university’s 350-cow herd. The evening concluded with a wine tasting at a local vineyard, LightCatchers Winery. The tour concluded as the group returned to Minnesota on Feb. 19. As the group returned to their home farms, they were appreciative of the opportunity to learn about southern dairy production and excited to return to the Midwest with the new friendships they had created.

Dairies in Central Texas began to migrate to the Texas panhandle to avoid the newly-implemented regulations. Today, 80 percent of Texas dairy farms are located in the panhandle. Despite having only 393 dairies in the state, Texas is currently the sixth largest dairy-producing state in the nation, and is fast-approaching Pennsylvania, who is currently number ve. The average Texas dairy has 1,000 cows. Milk production is nearing the 100 million gallons per month mark, and dairy processing plants continue to grow. While the Texas dairy industry has a positive outlook for the next three to ve years, Turley admitted there are fears. “The thought of a wall scares us. Labor has never been a problem in Texas; there are guys coming across the border regularly who are good workers,” Turley said. Finding quality employees may prove to be a challenge in coming years, depending on any action regarding the pending Mexico border wall. However, Turley said other alternatives are also on the horizon. “Robots are coming to Texas. They just haven’t been proven on large-scale dairies yet,” Turley said. “Once the robots prove themselves, we will see that migration.” Small-scale dairies that require less hired labor are out of the question for Texas. Given the size of the state, location of dairies and their distance to processors, shipping costs make small dairying operations unfeasible. Furthermore, Turley said the state struggles with corn production, making feed costs quickly add up. “Fifty to 55 percent of an average dairy farm’s expenses are from feed costs,” Turley said. Following Turley’s presentation, the Minnesota Milk Producers Association toured the Southwest Regional Dairy Center. The center opened in 2011 as a partnership between the Tarleton State University (TSU) and a local dairy producer. The 350-cow herd is owned by the dairy producer and are housed in facilities owned by TSU. The partnership is a unique resource which benets TSU students. “The producer owns 15,000 cows on multiple locations across the state,” Turley said. “Students can have animals brought in to t a specic research study by age or lactation, if necessary. Not many research programs have access to such a pool of animals.” Cows are milked in a 24-stall rotary parlor and housed in a naturally ventilated freestall barn. The herd is primarily comprised of Jersey-Holstein crossbreds with a separate freestall barn of 35 registered Jerseys. Cows are milked three times a day by employees hired by the dairy producer and have a current production of 77 pounds per day per cow. The parlor and freestall barn have a unique openpeak roof, creating a chimney effect. This was built for the purpose of drawing out rising, humid heat in the summer to keep the cows cool and comfortable. “Heat-stress level temperatures are here 24-hours a day, up to a month at a time,” Turley said. “In Texas, we have to take every precaution to keep cows comfortable come summer.” While the number of farms in Texas may be small, production continues to rise. From the dedication of its farmers to the research of its future producers, Texas continues to be a leader in the American dairy industry.

to be a great speaker, how to be a hard worker, how to help others, and most importantly, I learned more about the dairy cow and how great this industry is.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? To further my knowledge and passion for the dairy industry. With the help of numerous mentors in these programs, I have acquired numerous skills that I will utilize in my future with agriculture. My favorite being 4-H dairy judging because it allows me to learn more about the dairy cow itself, but also utilize speaking and communication skills while being competitive and making friendships.
Who do you look up to and why? I look up to my older sisters. My sisters have taught me everything and made sure I grow up to succeed and mature well. They always have great advice and harsh honesty, and can always make me laugh.
Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My favorite memory is winning my district 4-H dairy judging competition and later placing at State. I worked very hard and set many goals to make it that far. What’s your favorite social media and why? Instagram. What better way to agvocate than pictures. What are your career aspirations? I will be studying ag communications and marketing at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, in hopes of becoming a journalist or another communication job that allows me to work with farms across the state. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I have learned how

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. Usually when people ask me this I tell them I show cows, but in this instance, this probably isn’t much of a surprise. People don’t know that I can’t roll my tongue like almost every other human can. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I typically am on calf duty. When I am at the farm, I and another person feed over 100 calves both mornings and night. All our calves are bottle fed until they’re weaned to water and grain. I also work at cow shows during the year. I help wash, walk, bed, and feed animals from elite farms across the country. It’s a great opportunity. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would want everyone on the Earth to have at least one nutritious meal a day and to know where that food comes from. How would I do it? We need to start informing people now and create affordable and safe ways to create more product.

Dairy farmers are invited to Midwest Dairy Association’s Minnesota Division District Meetings which are continuing through April. Twenty meetings are scheduled, each of which will include a report from the dairy farmer board member serving the district, along with an update from staff and a complimentary meal. The full schedule of meetings can be reviewed at MidwestDairy.com/For Farmers. County American Dairy Association groups may also conduct business in conjunction with the meetings. Several locations will also include Minnesota Milk Producers Association Dairy Management Workshops. Dairy farmers may attend the meeting closest to them, regardless of the district in which they live. No RSVPs are required. District meetings are a chance for dairy farmers to learn how their checkoff investment is spent and ask questions of the board members they elect to manage the program. In 2016, Midwest Dairy launched an initiative called Dairy 3 for Me, for which more than 10,000 pledges were made by people who recognized the importance of getting three servings of dairy each day for good health. ConƟnued from CALENDAR | Page 14 Proper care and well-being of cattle in Wisconsin is important to farmers and consumers as consumers are increasingly interested in where and how their food is produced. The University of Wisconsin-Extension will host the annual Wisconsin Dairy and Beef Well-Being Conference on March 3, at Country Aire in Stratford. Dairy and beef producers, veterinarians, farm service providers, educators, emergency managers, rst responders, and elected ofcials are encouraged to attend. The keynote speaker will be Greg Peterson, Peterson Farm Brothers. He is an advocate for agriculture and continues to work on the family farm with his parents and siblings. Peterson and his brothers create YouTube videos about farming that together have received over 40 million views. Topics and speakers include: • Cattle Handling: Ron Gill, professor and Extension livestock specialist, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Gill provides leadership in programming related to animal well-being, stockmanship and low-stress livestock handling and helped develop the Stockmanship and Stewardship program he now delivers through collaboration with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) and the National BQA program.
