Family is paramount at Walk-Era Holsteins

Walkers place focus on breeding long-lived cattle By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Whether talking about the two-legged family members, or one of the many cow families the herd has been built upon, Walk-Era Holsteins has established that family is paramount. “Our most important asset here at Walk-Era is family,” Marci Walker said. “Farming as a family, while breeding cow families is a passion for us.” The Walker family farm was established in 1936 when Erwin and Ella Walker relocated from North Dakota to Columbia County near Wisconsin Dells, Wis. In 1957, their son, Dean, took over the farm along with his new wife, Dori. Today, they farm over 800 acres in a family corporation with their three sons and their families: John and Marci, Tim and Tracy, and Tom and Jackie. In total, there are seven Walker grandchildren, ranging in age from 4 years old to 18, making up the fourth generation to call Walk-Era Holsteins home. “Our family provides the

Being able to appreciate that and share it as a full family of three generations is truly a blessing.” The Walkers milk 100

head of registered Holsteins twice a day in a double-5 herringbone parlor. The herd carries a rolling herd average of 24,411 pounds of milk, 973 pounds of fat and 761 pounds of protein. The milking herd is housed in a four-row tiestall barn. A freestall barn houses the dry cows, along with groups of

open and bred heifers. Calves are raised in Calf-Tel hutches in the spring and fall, and are moved into a calf barn using Calf-Tel pens during the summer and winter. At weaning, they are transitioned into group housing in a pack barn. “We try to keep the calves in small groups of

six or seven,” Walker said. “Avoiding over-crowding allows for optimal growth.” At about 1 year of age, they are then moved into the freestall barn, where they remain until they are springing. “Our housing facilities and milking in the parlor is an asset in marketing dairy replacements,” Walker said. “The cows are accustomed to both housing styles and are parlor-trained.” The Walkers market about 25 head in consignment sales or by private treaty each year for show and dairy replacement purposes. The Walkers emphasize breeding cow families and value longevity in their cows. “Our cows are our family, too,” Walker said. “We take care of them, and they provide well for us. Long-living cow families allow us to have those extra animals to sell, creating extra income.” Developing quality animals has allowed the Walkers to achieve a 110.4 percent BAA, which ranks them in the top 100 herds in the nation, and 15th for herds of similar size. Marci Walker is one of 15 members of the Walker family involved in the daily work and operaƟons of Walk-Era Holsteins. Good Plus. Last year, the Walkers checked two items off their dairy cattle breeder’s bucket list. Welk-Shade Atwood Koko became their rst cow to pass Holstein USA’s classication committee to achieve the designation of being scored EX-95. Koko was purchased as a heifer and developed by the Walker family.

Later Walk-Era Dundee Annelise earned the same distinction, becoming the rst EX-95 cow to carry the Walk-Era prex. Annelise is owned by Budjon Farms and Tim and Sharyn Abbott of Lomira, Wis. Last spring, the Walkers have purchased a daughter of Annelise, Budjon-Abbott Automatic-ET, to continue working with her genetics. The Walkers have developed a breeding philosophy that ts their priorities. “We breed for a well-balanced cow,” Walker said. “Width, dairy strength, udders and feet and legs are all important to us. Of course,

we put emphasis on production and components as well. We reference genomics as a tool in making mating decisions.” The Walker family’s dedication to their breeding philosophy was recognized in 2015 when they were named the McKown Master Breeder Award winners at World Dairy Expo. “It was our most humbling accomplishment,” Walker said. “We were completely caught off guard by the phone call, but so very honored to be chosen as a recipient amongst breeders that we look up to.” Showing is a natural extension of the Walk-Era breeding program, and an activity that many of the members of the family enjoy. The Walkers see showing as a great marketing opportunity. “Like many other passionate breeders, breeding a World Dairy Expo Grand Champion is a goal we’ve always had,” Walker said. “Our Annelise daughter, Automatic, was named reserve junior champion at the International Junior Holstein Show. Earning our rst-ever Expo banner was extremely exciting.” That day of dreams continued as Annelise went on to be named the grand champion of the Junior Holstein Show for Trevor Tuman and Chandler Bening of Arlington, Minn. “Seeing those dreams come to fruition was thrilling and highly emotional,” Walker said. Stephanie Post 16 years old 10th grade When do you do chores? I help with chores every night and on some mornings. Now that the play season has started, I do chores most mornings. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is milking with Mom. My least favorite is milking with my brother, Zachary. It’s true what they say about the company making the difference. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? My Red Holstein cow, Delilah. I showed her at the Minnesota State Fair last summer. We read “The Taming of the Shrew” in English class, and I learned that Shakespeare is crazy. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be an author. I might like to also have a small hobby farm on the side. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would be a dairy farm about the size of our farm. I would have a ve-stall switch parlor and a lot where I can feed out Jersey steers. What’s your favorite dairy treat? Denitely ice cream. I like all avors except for mint. What is your favorite thing to do in the winter? Stay inside, read and avoid going outside for chores as long as possible. What do you like to do during recess? I enjoy choir and being part of our school play. I am also a member of our school’s robotics team. Zachary Post 14 years old Eighth grade When do you do chores? I do chores from 4:30 to 7:30 every night, including on weekends. I sometimes help chores on school mornings, too. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding silage outside with the skid steer. My least favorite chore is helping my brother, Jacob, feed the baby calves. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? My cow, Crystal. I have shown her at achievement days and last summer she won second place in her class. What’s your favorite subject in school? I like math the best. I have learned that it’s actually a bit useful. What’s something you’ve learned in school recently? I recently learned a bunch of things about the War of 1812. What do you want to be when you grow up? A farmer of any kind, but preferably a dairy farmer. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have 60 or so dairy cows, a feedlot for my steers and huts for my baby calves. I would have a big tractor, a big silage chopper and lots of silos. I would have plenty of sheds for my livestock and my machinery. What’s your favorite dairy treat? A nice, cold glass of full-fat milk straight from our milk cooler. What is your favorite thing to do in the winter? I like to tinker with the gaspowered go-cart that I built and make things in my shop. What do you like to do during recess? I enjoy playing basketball with my friends. Jacob Post 11 years old Sixth grade When do you do chores? I do chores every evening from 5 to 7. I sometimes help with chores in the morning, too. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding the baby calves. My least favorite is working the calves, vaccinating and dehorning. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? My cow, Shae. What’s your favorite subject in school? Social studies. What’s something you’ve learned in school recently? In math class, I learned how to graph

lines. What do you want to be when you grow up? I would like to be a farmer of any kind. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I’d have three dairy barns with 5,000 cows each. I would have a New Holland Smart-trax eld tractor and a T7 tractor for a loader tractor. I would raise a few hundred acres of corn and would have a big chopper, silage wagons and mixer wagon. I would have open lots for my cows and barns for my calves. What’s your favorite dairy treat? Strawberry revel ice cream. What is your favorite thing to do in the winter? It’s fun when Grandpa pulls us behind his four-wheeler in a sled that he made from an old plastic water heater shell. What do you like to do during recess? I like to play ball tag with my friends.

Dairy’s What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m involved in 4-H and FFA. I was secretary for four years and vice president for one year for the Harmony Helping Hands 4-H Club. I’ve been active in my FFA chapter for six years serving as reporter, treasurer and vice president, and I currently serve as president. I have also judged dairy for both organizations and competed at the state level multiple times. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I started in both 4-H and FFA when I was young because I was excited to show my animals. After a few years, I continued to participate because of the connections and friends I was making. I was learning so much that I wanted to dedicate more of my time towards them. FFA is my favorite because of all the places it’s taken me across the country. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience has been going to FFA State Greenhand Leadership Camp. I learned a ton and had the opportunity to interact with kids who were interested in the same thing as I was. I still talk to many of those people and took away great lessons.

What’s your favorite social media? Facebook because it helps me reach out to as many people as I can. It is widely used by a large variety of people to relay messages to many groups. What are your career aspirations? This fall I’m going to attend South Dakota State University to pursue a degree in dairy production. I hope to be a large animal vet. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? Patience, time management and dedication. Fifthgrade me would have never guessed how much patience I would learn from pulling my calf around with a halter for the rst time; the amount of time management I would gain from putting halter-breaking off too long and having a rowdy steer, or the dedication it would take to maintain my rst SAE.

Who do you look up to? I have always looked up to my parents. They do everything they can for their farm and their family. They are always the rst ones out and last ones in, and still manage to keep track of all their kids. No matter what the day brings, my dad always has a smile on his face and a joke to crack. Without my mom, we would all fall

Kayla Biel is a senior at Fillmore Central High School. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Kevin and Kelly Biel, who milk 200 cows in Fillmore County near Harmony, Minn. apart in the rst hour. I hope to be able to contribute as much to my career and family as they have. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I may not be able to do it well, but I love to sing. The calves that have listened to my so-called concerts in the calf barn will vouch for that.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. In the evenings, I am in the calf barns feeding, watering, bedding and caring for our calves. Otherwise I’m in the parlor milking our herd of Holsteins, Jerseys and crossbreds. I also clean out barns, grind feed and help with eldwork.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change the way some people view the dairy industry. Some consumers think we are hurting our animals and that they have horrible lives. I believe if people spent one day with our cows, they would easily change their minds. They need to understand our cows are happy, healthy and treated like royalty.

NOTE: This is an extremely well uddered, high producing herd of young, large frame Holstein cattle. This herd is the result of 76 years of continuous family farming. The herd average according to records of milk sold is approx. 20,000 pounds with 3.8% fat and 3.2% protein. Approx. 70 pound tank average. SCC averages 200 to 230,000. No TMR and the Dahlheimers have never used BST. Registered Holstein bulls from leading herds used for decades, most recently from the John Donnay & Tessmer herd of Corcoran, MN. Many cows are ﬁrst and second lactation with several recently fresh or due near and soon after sale time. Cows are milked in a tie-stall facility and are let out daily spring through fall and as regularly in winter as weather will allow.
