Spinning in a new direction Harters planning to switch from dairy to meat goats

PETERSBURG, Iowa – Jim Harter jokes that he has been going in circles for nearly 10 years. That’s sort of true, but not quite.

This Petersburg, Iowa, dairyman’s goats have been going in circles. That’s because in 2008 Jim designed and built a rotary milking parlor for his herd of crossbred does.

Jim and his wife, Bonnie, were having trouble getting their Brown Swiss cows bred. Blood tests on all the cows did not reveal the reason. At $900 for the rst round of tests, the Harters decided to stop searching for the cause of the breeding problem and switch to milking goats instead.

The Harters milked their cows in a double-4 parlor.

So, that’s where the 24-stall rotary goat parlor went.

Jim and a neighbor drove from Delaware County to Lancaster, Wis., to see a rotary parlor in action. While

watching it milk goats, Jim thought of ways to improve the device.

Back on his farm he came up with his design.

Using a nail and string out in the driveway, he laid out several circles of varying sizes. He nally concluded that a circle 12 feet across would comfortably accommodate 24 does at a time and t his needs perfectly.

Jim mined the pile of scrap iron in his shop for pieces to repurpose. He found much of what he needed, but had to buy other items, including a gearbox, variable-speed motor, milkers, pulsators and pipeline.

In all, he estimated he paid $6,500 for basic materials. With the milking-specific parts added, the total for the parlor nished at a little less than $13,000.

It took Jim about two weeks, while also doing his other farm work, to build the parlor. At about the same time, he sold the dairy cattle and bought 200 goats.

Eighteen days after he started building the rotary parlor, Jim switched on the milking platform’s motor and watched with satisfaction as the rst batch of two dozen does took their rst merry-go-round ride.

All went well. For a few days, family members and friends helped move the does until the caprines learned their new routine. Now the

Feed drops automatically from an overhead bin and into a trough. The Harters buy pelleted feed for use in the parlor, but grow the rest of the feed – corn, soybeans and alfalfa – on their 117 crop acres.

Without the pellets it would be difcult to get the goats into the milking parlor and onto the platform.

“If you don’t have feed, they won’t even come through the door,” Jim said.

“It’s like having frosting on the cake.”

Jim is pleased with his handiwork.

“I’ve been using this parlor morning and night for 10 years,” he said.

Each milking takes Bonnie and Jim about two hours.

platform. After the units are washed and rinsed, they’re hung on hooks and the drawers are pushed in so they’re out of the way.

Jim has built four rotary parlors for other goat dairy producers. The newer ones run on bearings and are a bit quieter than his own, Jim said.

He can build parlors to milk 24 does on up to 48 at a time. But since his pile of scrap metal has shrunk, Jim buys new steel from a nearby supplier. He said it’s easier to work with new steel than with old.

Right now it’s kidding time at the Harter place.

The 250 milking does will increase to about 400 after kidding wraps up.

Jim and Bonnie have managed their does so they freshen starting the rst week in January and nish in July or August.

That kidding schedule spreads out the workload. It also gives the Harters milk to sell to cheesemaker Woolwich Dairy, Lancaster, Wis., during the fall and winter.

Goats’ milk price rises then, since there’s less of the milk due to goats being seasonal breeders.

Early in the year, Jim said the base milk price might be $41 per hundredweight. Come spring, with many does in many herds freshening, it drops to about $36. As the year progresses and there’s less milk on the market, the base price climbs.

Milk processors pay premiums for higherthan-average butterfat and protein content. With those premiums factored in, Joe estimated his top milk price at $51 per hundredweight.

Of course, a goat produces less milk than a cow. Jim said it takes roughly 10 goats to produce the milk that one cow does. His does average 6.5 pounds per day over the courses of their lactation.

With that kind of production, it is possible to turn a prot with dairy goats.

“But don’t plan on making money the rst couple of years,” Jim said.

Many times, goats need to be purchased and various ailments could affect the herd. Plus, new goat dairy producers need to ne-tune their management system.

One aspect to goat dairying that can grow wearisome is raising the kids each year. In midFebruary, Bonnie kept busy bottle feeding one young or newborn goat after another.

“There’s more kidding in every minute,” Jim said.

The Harters’ daughters, Lindsay, 16, and Brianna, 11, help feed baby goats after school. But, Jim and Bonnie provide the bulk of the farm’s labor.

Due to dairy goats being labor intensive, the Harters plan to phase out of dairy and raise meat goats instead. Switching to Boer goats will mean good money and a lot less work, Jim said.

They aim to accumulate 400 to 500 Boer does and sell their kids when they weigh 60 pounds.

“No, I won’t miss milking,” Jim said. “I’ve been milking since I was big enough to go outside.”

Switching from milking cows to milking caprines was a good decision at the time, he said. But dairy goats still require plenty of work.

“Everybody told us how much easier goats would be,” Jim said. “And, they weren’t.”

Leaving the land better for next generation Klinkner brothers named Monroe County conservation farmers

CASHTON, Wis. – Farming separately, together, is how brothers Paul and Gerry Klinkner describe their working relationship. Together, they were honored as the 2017 Monroe County Conservation Farmers of the Year.

Both Paul and Gerry bought their farms from their parents in 1990. The farm purchased by Gerry was their parents’ original home farm, which their father had operated since 1946, and has been in their family since 1863.

Paul purchased an adjoining farm that had once belonged to their uncle before being purchased by their father and has been farmed by their family for over 100 years.

Paul and Gerry represent the fth generation to farm atop picturesque St. Mary’s Ridge outside of Cashton, Wis., in Monroe County. Each has a son joining them in their farming operations, making six generations.

Paul’s Klinkner Dairy Farm consists of over 300 acres, and he milks 60 cows with his wife, Geralyn, along with their son, Ben, and his wife, Erin.

Gerry and his wife, Ann, operate Breezy Acres Dairy and have about 330 acres and also milk 60 head with their son, Dillan, and his wife, Steph.

Both farms have been certied organic since 2001 and ship to the Westby Co-op Creamery.

The two brothers each own their own farms and herds of cattle. They own a great deal of their equipment in partnership, however, and work together to get the eldwork done.

“We have a simple agreement,” Gerry said. “We alternate years for who goes rst with forage harvesting. It works well and goes pretty fast.”

Paul agreed.

“Instead of having two lines of expensive machinery, we are able to have just one good line of nice machinery,” Paul said.

Both Paul and Gerry hope their sons will continue to maintain the same working relationship as they eventually take over management and ownership of their respective family farms. On each farm, their sons have begun buying ownership into the cattle.

That dedication to caring for the land has grown for each of them over the years, and they have become more passionate about nding ways to care for the land.

In 1986, their parents entered into the Farmland Preservation (FLP) program.

“It protects farmland from development, and you get a state tax credit for doing it,” Gerry said.

Paul agreed.

“My interest in conservation farming was really strengthened in 1990,” Paul said. “I was asked by the county conservation department to be a demo farm for the Middle Kickapoo Watershed.”

County conservationist Bob Micheel in helping grow their passion for improving and increasing conservation methods used on their farms, including streambank restoration projects.

“I eventually put in an earthen manure pit,” Gerry said. “I also put in a grade-stabilization retention dam to help hold back heavy runoff.”

Grade-stabilization retention dams work when there is heavy rain or when the weather warms up quickly, creating a large snow melt.

“The dam slows up the run-off, in this case to the Kickapoo River,” Gerry said. “There have been an awful lot of ood events just since 2007. These could help reduce the damage caused during those events.”

LASA to host annual meeting March 1

The newly formed Lafayette Ag Stewardship Alliance will hold its annual meeting March 1 at Bridges Conference Center in Darlington, the farmer-led conservation group announced today.

The event will showcase speakers on a variety of topics in modern sustainable agriculture. Experts from across the state and region will share information that can be applied to farms locally and beyond.

More than 100 farmers, agribusiness professionals and community members are expected to attend this free educational event. The public is invited.

The conference will include a panel presentation about farmer leadership in conservation as well as best-practice discussions with local farmers, extension professionals and industry representatives.

Dr. Dave Andersen, assistant professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University will give a presentation about manure economics and application options. His presentation will also include insight on future trends and management decisions.

As part of his extension appointment, Dan leads the Iowa Manure Applicator Certication program, which annually certies around 5,000 manure applicators.

A presentation by Heidi Johnson, the crops and soils agent for Dane County UW-Extension, will broadly discuss cover crops and their benets to soil health and farm economics. Johnson will also

discuss cover crop varieties and planting technologies that work well in Lafayette County farming systems.

In addition to the panel discussion and presentations, the event will include lunch and several program updates from LASA leadership and afliated resource managers.

“If it works right, hopefully you’ll get a little growth in the fall to develop some root structure,” Gerry said. “Then in the spring, the growth will thicken up and stabilize the soil to help prevent erosion. It makes for a good plow-down, too.”

Being certied organic, the Klinkners use conventional tillage methods to farm because of the need for mechanical weed control. They also employ a process called aming for weed control, where LP tanks are mounted on a cultivator frame with burners that are aimed at the row of corn about two weeks after the corn is planted. While it will burn the growth that is above the ground, it does not affect the growth point of the plant.

“It doesn’t get (all the weeds), but it helps as a management tool for us,” Gerry said. “It’s quite economical. I don’t think either one of us spends over $500 or $600 a year on LP. We’ve been getting corn, and it’s been working.”

Gerry is interested in starting to interseed sorghum into his silage corn.

“That is supposed to help bring up components in your milk,” Gerry said.

While the two farms have a working relationship for crops, each maintains

a separate dairy herd. Both herds are grazed in the summer.

Paul and his son Ben have a milking herd of 60 Holsteins housed in a tiestall barn.

One piece of technology that Paul and Ben are adding in their dairy operation are cameras on the calving pen, as Ben lives off the farm.

On his farm, Gerry and Dillan have started crossbreeding.

“I started with Holsteins, but I am looking at creating a three-way cross with Fleckvieh and Normande,” Gerry said. “I’m really liking the Fleckvieh crosses.”

Paul agreed.

“That’s a perfect example of how we can farm separately, together,” Paul said.

“Gerry can experiment in crossbreeding and Ben likes working with Holsteins.

We can both do our own thing.”

Both Gerry and Paul have an interest in breeding cows that produce A2A2 milk.

“We use A2A2 bulls if the mating is right,” Paul said. “Anything to keep the consumer happy.”

While the Klinkners have concerns about the over-supply of milk being produced, they are not worried about their place in the market.

The Klinkner brothers have each developed a strong sense of stewardship of the land and their cows. That commitment was learned from their father and each are passing that sense of ethics to their sons.

“I’m a farmer,” he said. “I want to farm and take care of my cows and the land and do the best I can to pass it on to the next generation.”

Fuchs returns to cows after knee surgery

BOWLUS, Minn. – After battling pain and discomfort, Jeremy Fuchs is back in the barn and with a clean bill of health.

Fuchs milks 34 cows with the support of his family – wife, Elizabeth, and children, stepdaughter, Charlotte, 9, stepson, Aiden, 5, daughter, Emily, 18 months, and daughter Joslyn, 4 months – near Bowlus, Minn.

The dairyman was bringing the herd into the tiestall barn for evening milking in November 2016 when his right knee gave way. With help from his family and neighbors, Fuchs was able to maintain the dairy all while spending more than a year recovering. “When you call the neighbors and they both say they’ll be there in a second, that’s community and what small towns are all about,� Fuchs said. “They’ve been here when I needed help.�

As Fuchs slowly returns to his daily tasks on the farm, he is mindful of the journey he has been through, vividly re-

membering the moment it all began.

It was a pleasant fall day and his milking herd was in the cow yard. “I was bringing cow 177 into the barn and planted myself in a position so she would go in. She went the other way and I turned towards her and my knee popped twice before I went down,� Fuchs said.

While still able to move, yet uncomfortable from the incident, Fuchs continued about his work. The following day, he underwent an x-ray and MRI. “I was placed in an immobilizer until I could see an orthopedic doctor,� Fuchs said. “My primary physician said I was a rare case and needed to see a specialist.�

Within four days, Fuchs had an appointment with a specialist at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

At the same time, he was scheduled for an arthroscopy where mobile cartilage was removed from a hole in his knee, allowing the hole to seal naturally. “The specialist came up with different reasons for why

this happened to me. One thought was the bone had a stroke and blood ďƒ&#x;ow was restricted, allowing the hole to develop. Another thought was I injured my knee as a child and never had it taken care of,â€?

Fuchs said.

To facilitate a healthy recovery, Fuchs reached out to his neighbors and brother, Jeff, for help with chores. While Fuchs’ wife cared for the calves and fed the cows before and after work, the others found time in their schedules to milk the cows morning and night. “Really, the doctor said I needed to ask for help because I was not going to be milking until my knee was good,�

Fuchs said. “That was the longest time of my life.�

As Fuchs rested, his family, who all had little experience in dairy farming, familiarized themselves with the day-to-day tasks. “I would go out on my crutches and make sure things were getting done right and check on the cows,� Fuchs said.

In time, Fuchs started putting weight on his knee and taking back more of the farm chores. “Getting in and out of the tractor was the hardest, but milking was not bad. I would lean on the stalls and didn’t have to bend my knee if I didn’t want to,� Fuchs said.

After two months of healing, Fuchs returned to the barn and began milking full time.

On Nov. 15, 2017, Fuchs underwent a second surgery.

This time, the surgeon took a bone graft and replaced the unstable pieces of the knee with cadaver tissue. The leg was also broke and plastic was implanted to correct the bow in Fuchs’ leg.

Knowing he would be out of commission for nearly two months following the surgery, Fuchs made preparations on the dairy for his absence and his family’s temporary presence.

He had straw bales on hand for lling the gutter rather than the usual choice of wood chips, and made sure there was plenty of chopped wood on hand to heat the house through the winter.

Fuchs also restructured his breeding program so only a few calves were expected during his leave of absence.

“Since I knew this second surgery was going to take longer to recover, I had things ready for my brother, who was helping again,” said Fuchs, men-

tioning the cold weather did not make things easy for those donating their time.

Luckily, this time around, Fuchs’ wife was also on maternity leave and able to dedicate more time for farm chores.

“When I wasn’t out in the barn, Elizabeth would send me pictures of the cows to keep my mind happy,” Fuchs said.

After seven weeks in the house, Fuchs was given approval to slowly acclimate himself to his old life at the beginning of February.

“Right away I started milking again.

Every once in a while I don’t feel good, but Jeff is still around to help when that happens,” Fuchs said. “I’m determined to do it all again. But mostly, I’m thankful. If it wasn’t for all those that helped me, I would’ve had to sell out.”

With spring eldwork on the horizon, Fuchs will soon be in the barn at full capacity and able to complete chores without pain – and for Fuchs, that time cannot come soon enough.

Higher global demand means greater U.S. exports

The Agriculture Department’s monthly Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, issued Feb. 14, mirrored dairy projections in the Feb. 8 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. It stated that milk production continued growing throughout 2017, increasing 1.7 percent over the previous year (adjusted for leap year). Milk cows numbered 9.392 million head, on average, an increase of 64,000 from 2016. Milk per cow was 22,937 pounds, 1.0 percent higher than 2016 (adjusted for leap year).

“Along with higher milk prices through most of 2017, relatively low feed prices contributed to the increase in milk production for the year,” says USDA. “Average calendar-year prices for corn, soybean meal, and alfalfa hay were $3.36 per bushel, $316 per short ton, and $145.33 per short ton, respectively. The milk-feed ratio averaged 2.42 for the year, an increase from 2.26 in 2016.”

The Outlook adds that “Relatively strong global demand for products appears to have contributed to the rise of prices in 2017, especially for products with high milk-fat content. Consumer perceptions of butterfat have changed in recent years as several studies have indicated possible lower risks of consuming butterfat and detrimental effects of alternative transfats.”

“Higher global demand and U.S. price competitiveness translated into higher U.S. exports,” according to the Outlook, however “While the U.S. dairy industry beneted from higher global demand, domestic use of dairy products was relatively weak in 2017. On a milk-fat basis, domestic use increased only 0.3 percent from the previous year, quite remarkable after three years of solid growth, particularly the 3.3 percent growth of 2016. On a skim-solids basis, domestic use decreased by 0.7 percent after three years of growth. Domestic use declined for all of the dairy products tracked by USDA Economic Research Service except for butter, American type cheese, and lactose.”

“Domestic use of butter increased by only 0.3 percent. Domestic use of Other-than-American cheese fell by 0.1 percent, rst decline since 2008, a year of recession. The weak domestic use of 2017 is puzzling given the strengthening of the economy throughout the year. While higher wholesale prices compared to 2016 may have played a role in the relatively low quantities demanded, the price changes were likely not large enough to fully account for the observed statistics.”

Unfortunately, the Outlook’s feed price forecasts were raised from last month. The 2017/18 corn price forecast is $3.05-$3.55 per bushel, an increase of 5 cents at the midpoint of the range. The soybean meal price forecast is $305-$335 per short ton, an increase of $5 at the midpoint of the range. The alfalfa hay price was $148 per short ton in December, unchanged from November but $21 higher than December 2016.

Matt Gould, analyst and editor of the Dairy and Food Market Analyst newsletter, echoed some of the Dairy Outlook’s remarks about domestic disappearance numbers in the Feb. 12 Dairy Radio Now broadcast.

“They were nothing to write home about,” Gould said, and that covered Fourth Quarter as well as the entire year. He cited butter as an example, pointing out that butter’s popularity has been rising, even featured on the cover of Time magazine and fat is being considered healthy again but the data shows U.S. butter consumption increased less than 1 percent last year and was essentially at in Fourth Quarter. Butter demand is not surging like we’ve been hearing, he said, but “while one blip isn’t a trend, it’s something we denitely have to watch.”

Other than American cheese, like mozzarella and other Italian style cheeses have seen demand slow as well, according to Gould. Growth was pretty at in 2017, up about 1 percent in Fourth Quarter, he explained, “But these aren’t terric growth rates. Population growth is around 0.8 percent, so you’re seeing demand growth just barely above population growth.”

Demand for nonfat dry milk and dry whey was essentially at last year as well, he said, “so broadly speaking the U.S. dairy market is seeing domestic demand growth that is very meek and the market is looking for exports for support.”

When asked how things looked in January, Gould said that the Super Bowl helped cheese sales and butter sales picked up, after being weak in December, but “more and more you’re seeing news about plantbased foods so by most accounts we’re not seeing any huge uptick in demand,” he concluded.

Cash block Cheddar cheese closed Valentines Week at a slightly more romantic $1.54 per pound, up 3 cents on the week but 4 cents below a year ago.

The barrels closed Friday at $1.48, up 12 cents on the week and 14 cents below a year ago, with 13 cars of block trading places and 38 of barrel.

Midwest cheese makers are reporting some positive trends in cheese demand, according to Dairy Market News. “Barrel sellers have reported that inventories are limited, and buyers searching for loads

produced as recently as early 2018 are out of luck.”

Cheddar demand, along with Cheddar inventories, vary from plant to plant. Spot milk into cheese production was widely available, as it has been most of the year and spot milk prices ranged from at to $3 under Class III. Cheese makers in the West report relatively steady domestic demand. Although a few manufacturers have seen the typical seasonal slowdown of orders for nished goods, overall, cheese is moving without a lot of discounting. Higher cheese prices in the EU and Oceania are helping generate good sales opportunities in some international markets. Cheese production is active while there is an abundance of milk. Cheese inventories are generally heavy.

Butter had a better week after dipping to the lowest price since November 2016 the previous week.

It climbed to $2.15 per pound Thursday but lost a nickel Friday to close at $2.10, still up 7 1/4-cents on the week but 5 3/4-cents below a year ago, with a whopping 72 cars unloaded on the week, 32 on Friday alone.

DMN says butter interest is trending up throughout the Central region. Current prices have garnered the attention of buyers, as butter producers report steady to increased sales this week. Cream remains available for butter churning, although there are some reports that cream suppliers are not offering as much.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk nished Friday at 70 1/2-cents per pound, down 3 cents, and 16 1/2-cents below a year ago, on 13 sales reported for the week.

The CME will launch a spot dry whey contract starting March 12. HighGround Dairy says it’s “excited for the dairy industry to have a daily view at dry whey prices that we believe will accelerate participation in futures and options contracts as it did for NFDM a few years ago.”

A quick refresher on milk pricing; in most of the USA, milk prices are determined using complex formulas by the USDA but the system has evolved over the years from a simple volume/butterfat basis to the current multiple component pricing, which takes into consideration volume, butterfat, protein, and various other components of the milk, as well as where the milk is to be used.

There are four Classes of milk; Class I is uid in the bottle or jug and yields the highest rate of return to the farmer. Class II is milk that goes into ice cream, yogurt, and cream cheese. Class III is milk that goes to cheese and dry whey, and Class IV is milk used in butter, nonfat, and whole milk powder.

It takes 9.6 pounds of milk to produce 1 pound of cheese, so every penny movement in the cheese price is equivalent to about 10 cents on the Class III milk price.

Dry whey is a bi-product from making cheese.

One hundred pounds of milk will yield about 10 pounds of cheese and about six pounds of dry whey. A 1-cent movement in the dry whey price equals about 5.9 cents on the Class III price.

The Class IV price is driven by powder and butter. One hundred pounds of milk yields about 8.6 pounds of nonfat dry milk and 4.2 pounds of butter.

A penny movement on the nonfat dry milk price will mean about 8.6 cents on the Class IV milk price and a penny movement on butter results in a 4.2 cent impact on the Class IV price.

Farmers receive a uniform or blend price, which is determined by their region of the country, based upon how much of that farmer’s milk went into the four different classes in his milk market order. California is currently not part of the Federal order system and has its own milk classes and pricing formulas.

ConƟnued from MIELKE | Page 10 ture announced its March Class I milk price at $15.20 per hundredweight (cwt.) for the north and $15.47 for the south. Both are down 27 cents from February and $3.42 below March 2017.

The three month average stands at $15.58 for the north, down from $18.51 at this time a year ago and compares to $16.08 in 2016. The southern average, at $15.85, is down from $18.78 a year ago and $16.35 in 2016. The March Federal order Class I base price will be announced by the USDA on February 22.

Meanwhile, the process of forming a Federal Milk Market Order in California is on hold as dairy producers await the outcome of a Supreme Court decision in a court challenge regarding the use of Administrative Law Judges. Such a judge presided over California’s September Federal order hearing so USDA says it is delaying its Final Decision on the FO. A February 13 USDA conference call reiterated the Department’s reasoning to hold off its decision.

Worst case scenario the process would have to start over from scratch however USDA says it will hire a judicial ofcer to review the record, word by word, and, if he determines the record complete he will ratify it, according to Western United Dairymen, and if not, he will would seek additional feedback.

Just as Coke and Pepsi battle falling consumption, dairy industry woes continue in uid milk consumption as well. USDA’s latest data pegs December packaged uid sales at 4.1 billion pounds, down a hefty 4.0 percent from December 2016.

Conventional product sales totaled 3.9 billion pounds, down 4.1 percent from a year ago; organic products, at 215 million pounds, were down 1.9 percent and represented about 5.2 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.3 billion pounds, down 0.4 percent from a year ago, but up 2.2 percent for the year, and made up 31.6 percent of total uid sales in the month and 30.7 percent for the year. Skim milk sales fell to 338 million, down 11.7 percent from December 2016 and down 11.9 percent for all of 2017.

Total packaged uid milk sales in 2017 slipped 48.1 billion pounds, down 2.2 percent from the same period a year ago. The 2017 total was just 0.7 percent below 2016. Conventional products for 2017 totaled 45.5 billion pounds, down 2.3 percent; organic products, at 2.6 billion pounds, were virtually unchanged.

Organic represented about 5.4 percent of total uid milk sales in 2017.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted four requests for export assistance the week of February 12 from cooperatives to sell 1.213 million pounds of Cheddar cheese to customers in Asia and the Middle East. The product has been contracted for delivery through May. In politics; as reported last week, lawmakers passed a budget bill that included enhancements to dairy’s Margin Protection Program (MPP). Effective immediately for the 2018 calendar year, the package reforms the MPP and provides access to additional risk management tools from USDA. National Milk says “these key elements will create $1.2 billion in baseline spending for the next Farm Bill, paving the way for additional improvements to the MPP.” NMPF says “The MPP reforms include raising the catastrophic coverage level from $4.00 to $5.00 for the rst tier of covered production for all dairy farmers; adjusting the rst tier of covered production to include every dairy farmer’s rst 5 million pounds of annual milk production (about 217 cows) instead of 4 million, a recognition of the growth in herd sizes

This will allow USDA to develop a wider variety of additional risk management tools for dairy producers that can complement the MPP,” says NMPF. Legislation has also been introduced in the Senate that would keep dairy farms from having to provide air emissions data under the Comprehensive Environ-

A breed of their own

Icelandic dairy perseveres despite milk quota, long winter

AKUREYRI, North Iceland – Iceland has long been known as the land of re and ice with bitter winters, chilly summers and sprawling active volcanoes. But, the island country is also home to just under 600 dairy farms.

Located 10 miles south of Akureyri, the so-called capital of Northern Iceland, and situated at the base of the Eyjafjörður Fjord, Hranastaðir is owned by Arnar Árnason and

his wife, Ásta, and their three children ranging from ages 16 to 21.

Hranastaðir is the name of the dairy farm that has been in Ásta’s family for ve generations. Arnar and Ásta purchased the farm in 2001 and have been dairying since.

“The farm work is our main job, but also I am working (off the farm) and my wife is also a family therapist,” Arnar said. “Our farm supports our lifestyle because we are bigger than average.”

Arnar and Ásta Árnason’s dairy farm is located at the base of the Eyjałörður Fjord in Northern Iceland. The łord is the longest of its kind on the island country. the Icelandic Cattle Association, as well. In addition, the dairy employs one full-time worker and hires additional workers for summer work.

“We have a lot more work during that time of year,” Arnar said of the hay harvest season.

A normal day begins at 8 a.m. when the 115 Icelandic cows are milked in two Lely robots. The cows have constant access to a corn and barley grain mix in the robots.

The herd is milked and housed in a 49- by 230-foot freestall barn, which is bedded with rubber matters.

During morning milking, calves chores are completed.

Then, morning coffee is had to organize the duties for the day.

After the farm’s employee feeds the cows. Cows are fed hay once per day which is produced on the family’s 300 acres.

“The main cow feed in Iceland is hay,” Arnar said.

“We get two to three yields a year. We start fertilizing in the beginning of May, in a normal year, and cut the rst yield around the middle of June; the second around the middle of July and sometimes the third in September. We do not raise any crops, but some farmers

do.”

Crops in the region include barley, oats and wheat.

Throughout the day, maintenance work is completed in the barn and the hired-help completes night chores.

“On a farm like ours there is always enough to do, and we have to spend a lot of time around the cows taking care of them,” Arnar said. “In modern farming, there is a lot of computer work, which me and my wife take care of. …

In the evenings, we take care of other things such as going to the grocery store and spending time with family.”

cattle, beef or dairy, are allowed to be imported to the country, which has allowed the Icelandic breed to thrive in isolation for more than 1,000 years.

“We have a unique disease status in Iceland and importing of agricultural products with no limit can be detrimental for our animal breeds because of infectious diseases (being brought in) that we do not have,” Arnar said.

The milk produced at Arnar’s farm goes to MS Iceland Dairies; a company that purchases milk from over 95 percent of the country’s dairy farmers.

Milk is picked up three times a week and used mostly for cheese, while in southern Iceland milk is used for yogurt, cream, uid milk and skyr, an Icelandic cultured dairy product.

“From MS, the farmer gets 0.69 eurocent/liter; from the government (to lower the price for the customer)

we get around 0.28 eurocent/liter,” Arnar said. “In addition, we have a complicated system of pay per animal and per hectare we harvest. In the long run, we get around 25-30 percent of our income from the government in many different forms.”

Arnar said they continue to breed the Icelandic cows for more milk, better udders and longer legs to accommodate the robots. The herd is bred using A.I. “Showing cows is not a normal thing in Iceland, and we only do it for fun so we focus on high type cows,” he said.

Distinct to Iceland’s dairy industry, Arnar said, is the housing requirements for cattle. The climate forces farmers to allow cows access to the indoors year-round.

“The cows go out over the day over the summer time for three months,” Arnar said.

Besides the cold temperatures, the country’s farmers have to adhere to a milk quota system.

“The main thing Icelandic cow farmers are facing these days is about the milk quota,” Arnar said. “We have a quota for how much each farmer may produce each year. Most farmers do want to keep that system. The main threat is importing milk products that is raising much these months and can be dangerous for the Icelandic industry.”

Despite the regulations on producing milk, Arnar said he has plans to provide extra income on the farm’s already limited resources.

“Now our farming land is fully used, and we cannot get the cow farm any bigger without buying more land,” he said. “We have decided to start a little egg production beside our dairy farming, and we will use this coming summer to build two houses for that and start that in the end of this year.

We think it is clever not to have all the eggs in the same basket and expand our production in the long run.”

While expanding his farm and producing a nutritious dairy product, Arnar is thankful for his tie to the industry.

“We simply like the lifestyle. It is good to work with animals,” he said.

“We like to be able to work together most days. To have the opportunity to raise our children in the country is the best thing that could have happened.”

off the coast of the North Atlantic Ocean and at the base of the longest fjord in Iceland. Arnar said the area experiences long winters.

“It begins to snow in September and we can get to eldwork sometimes in May,” he said of wintertime in Iceland where temperatures dip to well below zero and reach highs of around 15 degrees F. Arnar said there are 130 dairy farms in his area, and equipment dealers are plenty.

“Each farmer has an equipment dealer based on the brand he uses in his barn,” Arnar said. “They support their farmer for spare parts. … Some places in Iceland it is difcult to have the access to spare parts due to weather and road conditions.”

The average herd size is 45-50 milking cows, each producing an average of 14,500 pounds of milk per year.

Balmy weather opens door for many jobs Feb. 14

way to abnormally 40 degree weather Feb. 14, the Molitors took advantage of the day.

“Today breaks up the winter and it’s a Godsend to get things done,” Terry said.

Prom arrived on the farm at 5:30 a.m. and began mixing milk replacer for the calves. A short hour later, Terry and Pat were in the 116-stall tiestall

barn beginning morning milking.

As Terry hooked up the rst four milking units, Pat cleaned the barn and fed the milking herd. A short time later, Pat joined his father alongside the cows.

“I don’t mind milking.

There’s a lot worse jobs, like picking rocks,” Pat said.

The farm started in 1956, when Terry’s parents purchased the property. In 1982, Terry returned with intentions of taking over the family dairy with his brother, Dale.

The cows are on an outdoor bedding pack with wind breaks. The dairy is a semi seasonal grass based dairy with a focus on components. No TMR. For several years, the brothers managed the dairy until Dale left the partnership to farm with his son in the early 2000s.

Then, Terry and Pat became sole owners of the dairy with Prom working as an employee.

“I graduated high school in 2003 and came back right away,” said Prom, who has been working for his family for the past 14 years. “I like being with the cows and doing eldwork. By the time you’re tired with the cows, it’s time to do eldwork. While the majority of the animals are bedded with cornstalks, the milking herd is bedded with wood shavings.

“When we built the barn in ‘82, we used a bedding chopper for straw, but that didn’t keep it as clean. In the ‘90s we started using shavings and we’ve been doing that since,” Terry said.

Pat agreed.

“We’ve been doing it for quite a while. Everybody has their bad days, but between us three we have to get it done,” he said. “If it’s not us, it’s not going to get done.”

Days like Feb. 14 are ones Terry looks forward to and really enjoys in farming. While the men work together in accomplishing a long list of chores, it is a humble reminder for Terry and the family farm.

“It’s fun to farm with my son,” Terry said. “You work hard all your life and can give it to someone. Not everyone gets to do that.”

The day continued with Terry and Pat hauling round bales from the eld to the farm site. The hay was going to be sold in the next couple days.

Prom continued hauling manure and bedding pens before they all took a break for lunch around 1 p.m.

“We went back outside at 3 p.m. and cleaned one side of the mangers,” said Pat, who explained how once a week the family clears the feed aisles and feeds refusals to the heifers to sort through.

Communication key to farmer, lender relationship Carver County Dairy Expo panel shares how to build strong partnership

NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA, Minn. – One word came up time and time again at the “Building a strong partnership with your nancial lender and advisors,” panel on Feb. 19 during the Carver County Dairy Expo in Norwood Young America, Minn.

From start to nish, Pam Uhlenkamp, Bruce Mathwig and Paul Peterson stressed communication as the most important factor to building a strong partnership with nancial lenders and advisors. No matter what happens, the panel emphasized the need to communicate.

Additional takeaways from the session included the need for accurate records, recognizing that it takes time to process loans and the fact that interest rates are rising.

Mathwig, vice president of ag lending at Klein Bank in Norwood Young America, Minn., encouraged producers to communicate through text, cell phone or email, and noted the signicance of sharing cell phone numbers for quick communication.

“It’s important to have accurate records. When asked for information, provide it as soon as possible. Be fairly certain of the costs. We don’t like

“Have a plan. Know your numbers and where those numbers are coming from. Come in with a plan. You’ll be a step ahead of most of your peers. If you’re talking expansion, why is it a need and not a want? If you nd you can’t make a payment, call or come in ahead of time. Don’t wait,” Peterson

said.

Uhlenkamp, farm business management instructor at Minnesota StateSouth Central College, Mankato, Minn., said good relationships are the best way for producers to get through difcult times.

“Don’t hide from lenders,” Uhlenkamp said. “If you have questions or problems, call your farm management instructor or your lender. Be accurate with your yields or production. Lenders lose trust if you always underproduce or under-sell. Be timely in providing records. And, lenders appre-

ciate calls that things are going well. If they’re going awry, say so.”

Panel moderator, Megan Roberts, University of Minnesota Extension Educator, asked the panel how often producers should be in contact with their lenders.

“There’s never too much communication. In tough economic times, more communication is needed. If you wait halfway through the year, you only have a few months to overcome problems,” Peterson said.

Uhlenkamp said, “It depends. Some farmers are really good at communicating. They’re usually those with a good handle on things. Some are not so good. Use text, phone calls or email. There’s lots of technology to use. Communication is important.”

She encouraged producers to keep records in a timely manner.

“Do them every month to have a good handle,” Uhlenkamp said. “Good record keeping will notice problems before the lender will. If that happens, call your farm management person. Look at what can be done to x the problem, decide the short-term solution and gure out what the long-term effect will be.

That’s when you bring the lender in.”

Peterson, too, encouraged timely record keeping.

“If you wait until tax week, you’re doing it for somebody else, not for yourself. Records are a tool you have. You can decide how to use that tool. If there’s a problem, get people involved that can help your operation be more protable. Get them at the same table at the same time. They need to interact so they’re not working against each other.”

Mathwig noted the importance of addressing dairy problems early as it takes a long time to get back after making modications.

Roberts asked the panel what the continued downturn predicted for 2018 means for producers.

Peterson said FSA is a cash ow-based lender that looks at history.

“It cash ows or it doesn’t. What can we do to improve cash ow? Tough decisions have to be made to get through tough times,” Peterson said.

Mathwig said credit card debt needs to be gured into the equation.

“It’s often not reported but gets into big numbers – $40,000 to $50,000,” Mathwig said. “We generally plug in $40,000 as family living but it often

Uhlenkamp said the average living cost for a family of four for 2016 (the last year that data is available) was $90,000, including taxes, IRA and health insurance.

“If you’re not on MNsure, health insurance costs $25,000 to $35,000,” she said. “Our system is broken.”

She also brought up the factor of time as it relates to getting a loan.

“You may call today and meet tomorrow, but then it might take two to three weeks to go through a loan committee and bank board,” Uhlenkamp said.

“They’re dissecting ag loans, every piece of cash ow. Bank examiners have a lot of rules and regulations.”

Uhlenkamp also encouraged producers to look outside the box, looking for ways to drastically change things like having somebody else put up feed.

“Dairy producers are their own worst enemies,” Uhlenkamp said. “When milk prices are low, they milk more cows but, why are prices low? Because there’s too much milk. Sometimes we have to downsize, sometimes expand. We have to understand the operation and where it’s going.”

When an audience member asked where interest rates are going, Mathwig said they’re up 0.5 to 0.75 percent since November and suggested discussing with lenders whether to lock in long-term.

“It’s good to lock in interest rates,” he said.

“Five to 10 years xed on real estate. Twenty-ve years is usually the max time, occasionally 30 years to cash ow. Look at 10-year xed rates to decrease the cost during the time period.”

Peterson also suggested considering xed lower long-term rates.

“Once it’s variable, you have absolutely no control. Historically, we’re still at really low rates,” he said.

USDA to survey planting intentions As the 2018 crop production season begins, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to determine their plans for the upcoming growing season.

“Each year, the agriculture industry eagerly awaits USDA’s Prospective Plantings report, which provides the rst survey-based estimates of U.S. farmers’ planting intentions for the year,” said NASS’ Minnesota State Statistician Dan Lofthus. “The March Agricultural Survey provides the factual data that underpins these projections, making it one of the most important surveys we conduct each year.”

NASS will mail the survey questionnaire in February, asking producers to provide information about the types of crops they intend to plant

in 2018, how many acres they intend to plant, and the amounts of grain and oilseed they store on their farms. NASS encourages producers to respond online or by mail. Those producers who do not respond by the deadline may be contacted for a telephone or personal interview.

NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identied.

Online BQA Transportation Certication A new online Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Transportation Certication is available via the National Beef Quality Assurance program.

This certication program can be found at www. bqa.org. Click on “Certication” in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

“Transporters are an invaluable member of the beef supply chain. When cattle trucks hit the road, they become highly visible to the public’s eye and maintaining the highest level of animal welfare is critical throughout the journey,” explained Heidi Carroll, SDSU Extension Livestock Stewardship Associate.

Carroll went on to explain that before beef reaches the dinner plate, the animal is hauled several times.

“Cattlemen and transporters both insure the safety of people and cattle. They are also responsible for the quality of beef products and demonstrate their ethical

commitment of caring for animals humanely,” she said.

Transporting cattle at any age in their life is a stressful experience, so cattlemen and professional drivers should ensure the best care for the animals prior to, during, and after the journey.

The BQA Transportation Certication teaches industry best management practices and reviews laws and regulations for transporting cattle.

More about BQA Transportation Certication Two course options focus the content for Farmers and Ranchers or Professional Drivers.

Seven lessons and a quiz make up the courses which include: • Introduction to BQA Transportation • Principles of Stockmanship • Biosecurity

A blanket for those in need Prigge uses 4-H youth development project to help others

WINONA, Minn. – Tiegan Prigge’s youth development 4-H project will provide more benet beyond how to make Prigge a stronger leader. It will help people in need in the community.

This year, the 12-year-old is making 30 eece tie blankets as a service project for four area organizations – Grace Place and Hope Harbor, both in Winona, Minn. and Family Services and Mission 21, both in Rochester, Minn.

“I chose blankets because I like to make them,” said Prigge, who is the daughter of Trevor and Terri Prigge,

These organizations each have different purposes: from giving people a place to stay who are struggling nancially or with domestic abuse to helping victims of sex trafcking or for young girls who need to be removed from their homes for short periods of time.

“At rst I wanted to give the blankets to hurricane victims. We found out that would cost too much to send the

blankets, so we stayed local,” Prigge said.

This is the second year Prigge has done a service project for 4-H. Last year, Prigge collected over 300 pairs of shoes for people who needed them for the non-prot organization, Soles4Souls. At the Winona County Fair, she earned the reserve champion ribbon in the youth development project for her efforts.

After doing well in her project last year, Prigge’s mom encouraged her to do another service project, and Prigge readily agreed. That is when the two came up with the idea of making eece blankets.

“My grandma got me started making them,” Prigge said. “It’s fun and easy to do.”

Since then, she has also made the blankets as gifts for other people, including teachers.

To start, Prigge set a goal to collect enough money to make 25 blankets; however, her fundraising efforts exceeded her expectations, and she was able to generate funds for ve more.

She received money from four local clubs and organizations: the Lewiston Lions Club, a local Redman’s Club, a local ladies group and Immanuel Lutheran School in Lewiston, Minn., where Prigge is a sixth grade student.

“I want to thank all the organizations that donated,” Prigge said.

After securing the funds, Prigge purchased the eece, making sure to get a variety of colors and patterns to appeal to many people. She started making the blankets at the beginning of January.

Making the blankets consists of placing two 2-yard pieces of eece together. The edges are cut into two-inch strips that are then tied together to keep the two eece pieces as one.

Prigge and her mom have tag teamed the process with Terri cutting the strips and Prigge tying them together. It has helped make the blanketmaking go faster and is a good way to spend time with each other.

“Sometimes we turn the Olympics on and watch that while we make the blankets,” Terri said.

One blanket takes about 20 to 30 minutes to make.

“I don’t like to do more than one per day,” Prigge said.

However, a string of snow days allowed the mother-daughter duo to surpass their one-a-day blanket-making goal.

Succession, handling stress among topics covered

MARSHFIELD, Wis. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Central Wisconsin farm women gathered to spend Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day together at the Heart of the Farm conference held at the Belvedere Supper Club in Marshď&#x192;&#x17E;eld, Wis. The program, put on by the University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Center for Dairy Proď&#x192;&#x17E;tability covered topics of importance to todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s women in agriculture.

The day began with Jenny Vanderlin, Center for Dairy Proď&#x192;&#x17E;tability assistant director, outlining a blue print to the often-times tricky topic of farm succession.

Vanderlin began by asking those in attendance what came to mind when they heard the words farm succession.

Responses included stress, equity, fairness, overwhelming and a quip, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dying is the easy part.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are three basic questions you need to consider when beginning to think about farm transition,â&#x20AC;? Vanderlin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;First you need to think about

where the farm is now. Then you need to ask yourself where you want to be, and then determine how you are going to get there.â&#x20AC;?

Evaluating the answers to these questions gives farmers the opportunity to look at their operation broadly. Evaluating your operation puts everyone on the same page for knowing information.

Determining who is a stakeholder in the operation and the transition is necessary at the beginning of the process to ensure everyone that should be involved is. Sometimes, there are siblings who are not involved in the farm, but still consider themselves to be stakeholders in the transition process.

Other types of stakeholders might include businesses that hold liens against the farm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Does the next generation know the details of the farm? In many cases, stakeholders may never have seen the balance sheets,â&#x20AC;? Vanderlin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They may have no idea what is out there, what kind of assets or liabilities are out there. They have never been part of the decision making.â&#x20AC;?

Stakeholders need to determine their roles and work together to develop an action plan with strategies and tactics to reach their goals. Communication is paramount in the process of farm transition. Developing a timeline and a budget for working through the transition often helps with the process.

“Farm transition is one of the biggest concerns of many we serve but a lot of people don’t nd it fun to talk about,” said Matt Lippert, Wood County Agricultural Agent. “Most farms are family farms, and by the denition of family, they are always in some state of transition, if not in formal transition.”

To illustrate how family dynamics can affect a farm transitioning process, UWExtension agricultural agents from Wood, Marathon, Clark and Taylor counties presented a skit about a ctional farm family with unique dynamics.

Attorney Ashley Hawley, a specialist in farm succession planning on estate planning, from the Ruder-Ware law ofces talked about working with an attorney for farm succession planning.

“Estate planning is really about your goals,” Hawley said. “I can put together the documents you need, but if you don’t know what your goals are and you don’t know how to gure out what is most important to you, the documents I

When meeting with a new client, Hawley said she discusses power of attorney documents, a will versus a revocable living trust and asset protection.

“Everyone should have power of attorney documents.

That’s goal No. 1,” Hawley said. “There are two different types of power of attorney documents: healthcare and nancial.”

A healthcare power of attorney is enacted when two physicians determine that a person is no longer capable of making his or her own medical decisions. A nancial power of attorney is someone who steps into a person’s shoes to take care of his or her nances when that person is not able.

The state of Wisconsin has

a default distribution of assets if someone dies without a will or any estate planning documents, with all assets going to a surviving spouse or being split equally among children. That is why farm succession planning is important, to protect all stakeholders and determine where assets are distributed.

“Ninety-nine percent of farms in the United States are owned by one person or a family partnership,” Hawley said.

“Of those, 80 percent of the senior generation members want to pass their farm down to their family members, and 70 percent of that next generation wants to keep the farm in the family. The unfortunate part is, we only see about 30 percent of the family farms succeed in passing it on to the next generation.”

Hawley said the biggest

reason for failure of farm succession is that farm families don’t adequately plan for that succession.

Following lunch, UW-Extension Family Living educators Jackie Carattini and Nancy Vance delved into the topic of taking care of you, your body, mind and spirit.

“One big concern is that people that work in agriculture have the highest rate of suicide by profession,” Vance said.

“The suicide rate in agriculture is twice the rate of that for veterans.”

Farmers have many demands on their time, and the busier farmers are, the more stress they can experience.

“There are good kinds of stress, exciting things like an upcoming marriage,” Vance said. “There are also bad kinds

of stress, such as a death in the family or a divorce.”

Self-care is a conscious choice to take care of ourselves and meet our own needs.

“What are we doing to take care of ourselves?” Vance said.

“We are really bad at this, putting the needs of everyone else ahead of our own needs. You can do little things that will help you deal better with your stress.”

One strategy for learning to put your own needs rst is learning to say no.

“One strategy is learning to set boundaries,” Vance said.

“You need to learn to choose the discomfort of saying no over the resentment of saying yes.”

Creating a joy list can help release positive endorphins in the body and help reduce stress.

“Recalling a time when you felt great joy can make you feel as good as when you actually experienced it,” Carattini said. “There is something good about spending time on happy memories.”

Being mindful of your breath and practicing controlled breathing can help clear clutter from your mind and allow you to be present in the moment.

“We call all this clutter in our mind ‘monkey mind,’” Vance said. “All these thoughts are in your head and stressing you out, and you can use controlled breathing to help clear that.”

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will offer “Down on the Farm: Supporting Farmers in Stressful Times” trainings in February and March. The professional development workshop will be offered in six different cities across Minnesota; it is designed to help people who work with farmers on a regular basis recognize and respond when they see farmers experiencing stress, anxiety, depression and other challenges.

The three-hour workshops are free and will be held at both 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in these locations: • Wednesday, March 14 - Grand Rapids, Itasca Community College • Thursday, March 15 - Thief River Falls, Northland Community & Technical College The MDA invites agency staff, bankers, veterinarians, crop consultants, clergy, social service and health care professionals, agriculture educators, and others who work with farmers to attend.

The main presenter will be Ted Matthews, a psychologist who has worked with farmers and farm families statewide for more than 20 years and has led several state and federal crisis response efforts. Randy Willis from the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association, Michele Page from the Farm Service Agency in Minnesota, and Meg Moynihan from the MDA (who is also a dairy farmer) will join Matthews to deliver the training.

Participants will learn to recognize signs of mental and emotional distress and crisis, use active listening skills, and nd local and regional resources available to farmers, and will improve their condence in delivering difcult information to farmers in stressful situations. Continuing education credits are available.

Holstein Foundation graduates Young Dairy Leaders Institute Class 10 Fifty-one young adults from across the United States, Mexico, and Canada took part in Phase III of Holstein Foundation’s tenth Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI) class held Jan. 31 – Feb. 3 in Phoenix, Ariz.

YDLI participants engaged in in-depth workshops covering topics of advanced media relations skills, conict management, and the public policy process. They cultivated skills they gained during Phase I, along with what they have practiced and accomplished over the past twelve months to become effective spokespeople and advocates for the dairy industry with consumers and media.

The theme for this YDLI Class was “Charting Your Course.” In addition to hearing presentations from every class member about their Phase II advocacy projects, the Phase III session featured speakers and workshops including: • Ty Bennett delivered a keynote about the “Power of Inuence.” His message left the class encouraged and feeling motivated to continue charting their course for lasting inuence on people they interact with.

• Bonnie Burr, YDLI Class 1 graduate and 2004 YDLI Distinguished Alumni Leader, led a session on understanding public policy and had participants see how they could be more involved in the governmental process.

• Joan Horbiak presented “Leading Out Loud” which focused on conquering interviews with the media, handling consumer questions, and sharing their dairy story.

• Dr. Wes Jamison led a workshop on conict management that focused on understanding conict sources and styles. Dr. Jamison also moderated a session with guest Gene Baur on the topic of animal welfare. Baur is the president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, nation’s largest and most effective farm animal rescue and protection organization.

• Pete Kappelman, Holstein Foundation board of trustees’ chairman and 2001 YDLI Distinguished Alumni Leader, conducted a workshop, “Get Ready to Run…For the Board!” that taught participants about gaining condence in their leadership abilities in a board setting.

The Holstein Foundation and Young Dairy Leaders Institute participants would like to sincerely thank the many gracious sponsors who made the experience possible.

Farm Center is here for Wisconsin farmers Work on a farm never ends, which can create added stress. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) reminds farmers that Farm Center staff are available to navigate the ups and the downs of agriculture.

“We know that stress is high right now for dairy, livestock and crop farmers alike,” said Farm Center Director Kathy Schmitt. “Sometimes it can be hard to see possible alternatives in tough situations. That is where the Farm Center can help.”

The Farm Center works one-on-one with farmers and their families through all phases of the farm cycle, including start-up, growth, change, generational succession, and retirement. These no-cost services are available for both new and experienced farmers.

“Farming is a complicated and demanding business,” added Schmitt, “and it is helpful to have someone there providing support, suggestions and encouragement, whether it be family, friends, or counseling services.”

Farm Center staff can help sort out farm nancial options and offer a listening ear if you need someone to talk to about your farm situation. DATCP also has a counseling voucher program that can be used to access mental health services.

“We know that chronic stress can have negative effects on our bodies, emotions, and ability to make decisions, and everyone gets a case of the blues now and then, but sometimes the blues turn to depression,” explained Schmitt. “Depression is a serious, but treatable medical condition.”

Schmitt recommends watching for signs of depression in yourself and loved ones.

Some signs include increased use of alcohol or drugs, decline in personal or farm appearance, reduced interest in activities, irritability, exhaustion or negative thoughts. If you observe these symptoms, you are encouraged to call the Farm Center staff, doctor or counselor who can help.

“In agriculture, we’re used to the cyclical nature of prices, production and weather cycles constantly changing,” concluded Schmitt. “The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone in these challenges. The Farm Center is here to help farmers maneuver through the lows so we’re all ready when a new cycle begins.”

Five tips to start strong this growing season Growing and producing a high-quality corn silage crop starts at Day 1. Now is the best time for producers to build a plan for the upcoming growing season with their team of experts.

“With feed costs close to 60 percent of a dairy operation’s budget, the choices a producer makes now will not only impact the upcoming growing season but also protability down the road,” says Jon Erickson, commercial agronomist.

Producers who take the time to build a high-quality plan now can stay on track and protect their investment. Erickson offers the following tips for producers to get a strong start for 2018 and beyond.

Assess how the 2017 crop performed. As producers begin feeding the 2017 corn silage crop, they should track how it is performing in the bulk tank. Producers can use results from silage testing and milk records to determine if last year’s seed selection was the right t for the operation and review how in-season management may have played a role in its quality.

Starting here in the planning process can help producers adjust the rest of their plan and nd opportunities for improvement in the eld in 2018.

Explore innovations. This time of year, there are plenty of conferences, trade shows and meetings happening across the country during which experts share new research within the agriculture and dairy industry. These opportunities give producers a chance to take time away from the farm to gain information about the latest management options for the farm.

ConƟnued from UDDER STUFF | Page 36 Build a planting plan. Choosing the right corn silage hybrids is only one part of producing high-quality silage. Now is the time for producers to consult their agronomist and eld team to determine where to place those hybrids and at what populations. For highly digestible corn silage hybrids, a plant population between 32,000 and 34,000 seeds per acre is generally a good t. This allows each plant to establish a strong stand and receive enough nutrients. Plant singulation and even emergence are also important factors in maximizing yield — producers should ensure their planters are calibrated and maintained for success at planting.

Plan for extra silage supply. It also is important for producers to consult their nutritionist to determine the acreage and yield needed to produce enough corn silage for the year, as well as their risk management strategy. Planning can protect the herd’s nutrition plan if unfavorable weather causes low yield or a low-quality corn silage. The extra supply also can help producers transition into new corn silage after fermentation — this helps reduce uctuations in production and performance when switching to new forages.

Determine a crop management plan. It is never too early to start mapping out crop management needs by analyzing soil samples and eld fertility, by reecting on what happened last year and by determining how to combat common in-season weeds, pests and diseases. Local seed advisers and agronomists can offer advice based on regional disease and insect pressures, can help producers determine in-season herbicide, nutrient and fungicide applications and can plan ahead by selecting the appropriate traits or seed treatments — all to help producers protect their seed investment throughout the season.

Planting is the most important time of the season. Getting the corn silage crop off to a strong start can pay dividends for years to come.

Wisconsin FFA Foundation opens chapter grant applications The Wisconsin FFA Foundation has opened the application period for the 2018 Chapter Grants. Four opportunities are available to FFA chapters around the state due to generous funding from Foundation sponsors.

The Foundation’s 2018 Chapter Grant Program is available in these categories: Bethany L. Rieth Memorial Community Service, Food for America, Burton H. Morris Chapter Grant and WAXX/Wisconsin Farm Report Network with Pam Jahnke Convention Grant. Chapter grants encourage Wisconsin FFA chapters to develop individual and cooperative activities which will enhance their communities.

In its second year, the Community Service grant is available due to generous donations to the Bethany L. Rieth Memorial Fund, which was established in the Past State FFA Ofcer’s honor after her sudden passing in February 2016. These annual grants given in Bethany’s name will be awarded to support chapters in completing meaningful service projects that make a difference in their communities.

The Food for America Grant is funded once again by the Wisconsin FFA Foundation’s long-time Two-Star Mission Partner, Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative, Inc. Examples of Food for America grant projects have been or could be: hosting events done in cooperation with another organization to promote healthy foods or eating, or establishing a community garden.

New this year, the Burton H. Morris Chapter Grant is available to FFA programs with a land base in Adams County. There are no program restrictions on this grant. The funding is through a gift from the Burton H. Morris estate after the lifelong Adams’ County resident’s passing in 2016.

Another rst-time grant opportunity is made possible by the WAXX/Wisconsin Farm Report Network with Pam Jahnke. It is open to FFA chapters across Wisconsin whose members have nancial restraints which prevent them from attending the Wisconsin FFA Convention held each June in Madison.

“Midwest Family Broadcasting as a company believes in live and local,” says Jahnke.

“With myself and Bob Bosold as part of that group, it only made sense that we wanted to help make a positive impact on our local communities with this grant. The Wisconsin Association of FFA program and its agriculture educators are important partners to Bob and I, and we’re proud to help support them in this small way.”

To be eligible for a 2018 Chapter Grant, FFA chapters must be in good standing with the Wisconsin Association of FFA and submit a completed application to the Wisconsin FFA Foundation by May 5, 2018. Applications can be found on the Wisconsin FFA website (www.wisconsinffa.org/programs).

Cook macaroni according to package directions to firm texture. Add the oil and onion to the water when you add the macaroni. Drain well. Melt 2 Tbsp. of butter in a 4-quart pan. Add the flour and cook to light golden brown. Whisk in the milk and bring to a boil. Boil 1 minute, then remove pan from heat. Stir cheese into white sauce until melted and thoroughly mixed. Spray baking dish with cooking spray. Spread 1cup sauce in bottom of dish. Put drained macaroni in dish and top with ham and broccoli. Pour remaining cheese sauce evenly over the top and spread to edges of pan. Melt remaining 4 Tbsp. of butter and mix with cracker crumbs. Sprinkle on top of cheese.
