A) How often did you watch the Sochi Olympics? B) Which event did you enjoy watching the most? C) Did you have an athlete you were cheering for? D) What was your favorite Olympic moment from this year? E) What has been your favorite Olympic moment from past games? F) If you could create a farming related Olympic sport, what would it be and how would you play it? G) Tell us about your farm.

What farming related Olympic sport would you create?

Rein Landman White, S.D. Brookings County 1,050 cows A) We watch as much as we can. The trouble is, the broadcasting rights are owned by NBC so we can’t get them in on the Dutch channels that we normally watch. B) Ice speed skating. Skating is in our genes and we love to skate ourselves, so it’s fun to see those athletes go so far beyond what we can do. C) Sven Kramer, a long track speed skater who is from my hometown of Heerenveen, the Netherlands. He has already won a gold in the 5,000 meters and I think he can do the same in the 10,000 meters. D) When the Dutch speed skaters Sven Kramer, Jan Blokhuijsen and Jorrit Bergsma won the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in the 5,000 meter event. E) In the 1972 Winter Olympics held at Sapporo, Japan, a Dutch lady speed skater named Atje Keulen-Deelstra won a silver and two bronze medals. She was 34 years old at the time and the mother of three children. She was also World All-around Champion four times between the ages of 32 and 36. F) I would hold a freestall raking event. There could be both a singles race and a relay competition. A panel of judges would award points for speed, form and effectiveness. G) I dairy farm with my wife, Boukje and our son Gary. Our son Steve is a newlywed, having recently married the daughter of a dairy farmer. They are both very happy. After completing an expansion last year, we hope to continue improving on what we have. Despite the cold weather we have had this winter, we are glad to be here in South Dakota. Winters in the Netherlands are chilly and damp and gloomy. We deeply enjoy what we are doing and get a great deal of satisfaction from the dairy farming lifestyle.

Diane Beckrich Cologne, Minn. Carver County 70 cows A) I watch them everyday when I have a chance. B) I love the couple’s gure skating and freestyle skiing. But I enjoy most of the events and watch them all. C) I enjoyed seeing the story of Noelle Pikus-Pace and her journey to Sochi. I think she is inspiring. To do the sport of Skeleton just is amazing to me. I also enjoyed watching Bode Miller in the Men’s Super-G. D) So far, my favorite Olympic moment was T.J. Oshie’s winning goal in the shootout during the USA/Russia hockey game. E) During the summer Olympics, I enjoy watching gymnastics and think that Shawn Johnson was so enjoyable to watch. F) I have always said my boys should be in a bobcat Olympic sport for how well and graceful they can run them. However, I am not sure many people would understand how and what it takes to clean the tight places they have to clean. There could also be stacking round bales and racing to tie up the cows. G) We are currently milking 70 cows and will be lambing 70 ewes beginning in March. All three of our sons help out on the farm while holding other jobs and attending college. Hopefully we will have a normal spring, so we can get descent crops this year and life can be a little less stressful.

Corrine Lieser Spring Hill, Minn. Stearns County 60 cows A) Almost every evening – we (my husband, Gary and I) loved watching them. B) It's hard to name just one – they were all fun to watch, but we did enjoy the men's/women's free skiing slopestyle, and speed skating. C) Noelle Pikus-Pace. She was a wife and a mom of two small children, who after nishing 4th in the skeleton event at the Vancouver Olympics, came back this year to compete again, because of her husband telling her that she needed to fulll her dream, and achieve a medal. With his giving her that push to compete, and after 13 years of hard work, she won the silver medal for the U.S. D) This is also hard to just name one, we had to choose two. 1: When we saw Noelle Pikus-Pace win the silver medal, and climb the fence into the stands and hug her family. It was very touching. 2: Seeing three Americans on the podium winning the gold, silver, and bronze medals. The third time in Olympic history three Americans have done that. E) In the 1996 Summer Olympics when Kerri Strug, one of the 'Magnicent Seven', injured her left ankle on her rst vault in the gymnastics event. She knew the other six girls had done their job, and she was the only chance they had to bring home the gold medal. Even though she was injured, she did the second vault landing on one foot, and won the gold medal for the U.S. Her coach carried her to the podium to receive the honors with the other six girls. It was a very memorable event. F) We think it should be a Summer Olympic timed event where the participants would pick a certain amount of rocks, then use them to build a replica of a world monument. Hopefully they could pick the rocks

Molly and Ryan Kappers Spring Valley, Minn. Fillmore County 55 cows

Deb Sjostrom Lafayette, Minn. Nicollet County 94 cows

A) We watch the Olympics every night after chores for about an hour.

A) Daily in the evenings when possible.

B) We thought the half pipe skiing was exciting. C) We just cheer for all the Americans, not anyone specic. D) Our favorite moment was when the USA swept the podium in the men’s slope style skiing. That was cool to see. E) Even though he is not American, Usain Bolt, the sprinter from Jamaica, was fun to watch in the summer Olympics. He’s so fast. F) A rock picking relay. The objective is for the athletes to run as fast as they can with a three-person team handing rocks off. After an hour, the team with the most rocks wins. The USA tryouts could be held here at our farm. G) We have been milking Registered Holsteins for 3.5 years. We plan to continue advancing genetics through ushing and IVF on our top-end cows. We are also hoping to be at the shows this summer and fall.

in Stearns County. G) My husband, Gary, and I are married almost 43 years, and live on Gary's home farm. We have four sons, Scott is farming with us, and the other three are married and live in the Twin Cities. We have four grandchildren – two boys and two girls. We milk Holsteins, and raise all our replacement animals. We raise alfalfa, oats, and corn. We don't have any big plans for 2014; maybe replace a few pieces of machinery.

B) Figure skating, the skiing events, hockey, luge, or whatever was on. C) No one in particular, but I especially love to follow any underdog, such as the Jamaican bobsled team from years ago. D) Watching the surprise and/ or gracious gold medal winners become emotional seeing their ag and hearing their national anthem. E) The USA Hockey win in 1980. F) Open the gate to a pen of 20 bred heifers, then get them back in with husband-wife teams. It should be a timed event, in two feet of snow. G) We updated last year so the goal is to make money this year to pay for last.

“I was so grateful for Udder Comfort.” — Wendy Schmidt

WOODMOHR JERSEYS Wendy and Jon Schmidt, BLOOMER, WISCONSIN 40 Reg. Jerseys: 30 EX, 10 VG; AVG 91 points RHA 19,000 — SCC 100 to 125,000 Awards received for milk quality Wendy Schmidt and her Woodmohr Jersey ‘girls’ know the comfort of a passerby, when a distracted driver tipped their trailer heading home to Bloomer, Wis., from the 2012 World Dairy Expo. “Jersey cows are like people,” she says. “It took us all awhile to get over the trauma. Carrie Mess (Dairy Carrie) was one of the people who stopped to help us that night. She gave us 10 tubes of Udder Comfort™ and we put it on all the legs and udders. That was the first thing we did. “When we got home, we continued to put it on 3x/day, going through 12 to 15 more bottles. Those cows now have the lowest SCC in the herd and no issues in any quarters whatsoever,” Wendy recalls a year later during the 2013 Expo. “I used to just use Udder Comfort samples sporadically. But now I use it faithfully on all fresh cows and any cow with swelling because I know what it can do. We rarely need to treat a quarter now.

Wendy Schmidt with NASCO Type and Production winner GB Jade Diva of Woodmohr EX 94.

“These cows are my very life, and I was so grateful for Udder Comfort. If we had not used it on ‘Jade Diva’, I don’t know what would have happened to her. She had a lot of injury and swelling being on that tipped trailer right next to the one cow that died that night. “It was amazing to bring her back to Expo a year later and have her win third in production and receive the 2013 NASCO Type and Production Award.”
