Women forge ahead in farming Lakeshore Technical College all-female class a rst for dairy herd management program By Stacey Smart

stacey.s@dairystar.com

MANITOWOC, Wis. – For the rst time in the college’s history, all the students in the dairy herd management program at Lakeshore Technical College are female. The class of 2021 includes seven young women bound together by their love for agriculture and dairy in particular. The all-female class shares a passion for cows, even though the majority of students did not grow up on dairy farms. Many developed an interest in agriculture through involvement in 4-H and FFA and time spent around cows while growing up. Two of the students live on family farms. Savanna Merrill grew up in Green Bay and started working on a farm when she was 16. “I always wanted to work with animals, and I fell in love with cows,” Merrill said. Alexis Doege grew up in Brillion and began working on a farm when she was a freshman in high school. Kelsie Bramstedt, from Newton, was involved in 4-H and FFA showing pigs and horses before developing an interest in cows. She worked on a farm in high school while also taking classes in the Youth Apprenticeship program

To fulll their internship requirement, each student also works on a dairy farm and must complete 218 hours of intern work in order to graduate. Kroll’s favorite part of class is using the calving simulator. “I have the smallest arms on our farm so it’s good to learn different techniques for delivering calves,” Kroll said. “I can play around with the calf and learn how to deliver it the best way. The simulator is really cool.” Students also perform a necropsy on a calf to determine the cause of death by examining its lungs, intestines and stomach. During udder dissections, students learn the effects of mastitis. “I really liked doing the calf dissection with the vets,” Bramstedt said. “It was interesting to look inside and see, for example, where the milk is going.” The students also receive one-

on-one training on dairy farms and at agricultural businesses. They visit 10 sites as part of their training, gaining rsthand experience with a veterinarian, A.I. technician, nutritionist and other industry professionals. The Lakeshore Technical College School of Agriculture is located near Manitowoc and works in partnership with Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center. Partnering together in the name of education, the school moved its location to share a campus with the Discovery Center when the center was built in 2018. Having embarked on an academic journey together that will help prepare them for the rigors of working in the dairy industry, the women in Lakeshore’s dairy herd management program are excited for what the future holds. “It’s fun,” Kroll said. “We know so much about each other now, we’re like sisters.”

Questions for the youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I work on my parents’ farm, where they raise heifers for my cousins’ dairy. There, my responsibilities are mixing feed and helping sort heifers that need to go back to the main farm. I also help haul manure and x fence. At Schrimpf Farms, I milk cows and help do calf chores when they need an extra hand. When did you begin helping on the farm? I started at the Schrimpf Farm this last summer about the second week in August. I work whenever they need someone either feeding calves or milking. I have been working on my home farm since I could walk, and now my responsibilities have grown. When I was younger, feeding the calves was how I got started working on the farm. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I balance school and working on the farms pretty well. It helps now that I am not in any sports. my home farm. It puts a smile on my face to do something I enjoy. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents and employer? Hard work and dedication can get you far in life. Take opportunities to follow your dreams and don’t be disappointed if something doesn’t work out. There is always something else out there for you. What are your future plans? This fall I will attend the University of Wisconsin-River Falls to study dairy science. From there, I don’t know what will happen.

NOTE: This is an outstanding opportunity to purchase hard-to-find, home-raised, farm fresh high quality herd replacements in volume. This herd has been on official DHIA testing for many years with current records indicating a herd average of 2X 23,279 milk, 4.1% 931 fat, 3.1% 721 protein, 75 pound tank average with 47 over 100 pounds with beautiful udders. SCC averaging approx. 100,000. Several recently fresh or due soon after sale time. The herd has been aggressively culled in preparation for this dispersion. The Lanners have used herd sires exclusively from the Melarry (Hackett) herd for over 10 years. All cows sired by or in service to sons of high TPI and NM sires including: 12 sons of Frazzled, plus more by Helix, Resolve, Reason, Nugent, Curry, Rolan, Moola and Solution. An excellent herd health program has been in place for many years with all cows vaccinated and boosted annually with Bovishield Gold 5L5 and One Shot. At dry off all cows receive J-vac and revaccinated with J-vac 3 three weeks prior to calving. Cows also receive Quartermaster and U-seal. All bred heifers vaccinated with Bovishield Gold 5L5 pre-breeding. Hooves are trimmed monthly. Cows have very good feet, legs and overall mobility. Cows are milked in a 21 swing parlor and housed in a free-stall facility. In order to expedite the sale process, cows and heifers will be sold in lots from 1 to 4 head per lot. Any cattle sold in multiples will be sorted in uniform lots as to age, lactation stages and production. If you are in need of top quality herd additions, we strongly urge you to be ringside on March 23rd to take advantage of this rare opportunity to purchase superior individuals from a single source. Trucking available. Prior inspection welcome by appointment beginning Thursday, March 18th. Thank you!
