Vander Wals call Pipestone home Natives of The Netherlands receive farm family award By Jerry Nelson

PIPESTONE, Minn. – The John and Berlinda Vander Wal family of Pipestone, Minn., was recognized as the 2016 Farm Family of the Year for Pipestone County. The Farm Family Recognition Program, which has been around for more than two decades, recognizes farm families from throughout Minnesota who have contributed signicantly to their local communities and to the agriculture industry. Honorees are recognized at a ceremony held during Farm Fest. The 2017 Farm Family Recognition Program will take place on Thursday, Aug. 3. John and Berlinda are the parents of ve grown children. Their daughter, Jenn, and her husband, Steve Landman, have two children – Brooklin, 2, and Ryan, 4 months. Alisha and her husband, Trevor Ekkel, have a son, John, 1. Daughters Bernice and Amy-Jo are both students at South Dakota State

The couple wed in 1989 and soon moved to Lacombe, Alberta, Canada, where they began dairy farming. They chose to settle in Alberta due to its large community of Dutch immigrants. “My father milked about 100 cows when I was a kid,” John said. “But Holland had
a dairy quota system and that made it all but impossible for me to join the operation.” Canada has its own dairy quota system, which meant that the Vander Wals had to purchase quota before they could begin dairying. They also had to purchase quota any time that they wanted to expand. “I don’t do well under a quota system,” John said. “It can cost millions of dollars to buy milk production quota for a 100-cow dairy. You are pretty

much guaranteed a prot once you pay off the quota, but that whole system was too cumbersome for my taste. Cutting back and selling cows is not in my nature.” By 2004, the Vander Wals had grown their dairy operation to 200 head. They wanted to expand their herd to make room for their family, so they turned their eyes southward, toward the United States. “We wanted to settle in an area where there is a strong
Christian Reformed Church so that our kids could attend a Christian Reformed school,” John said. “That narrowed it down to either northwestern Iowa or southwestern Minnesota.” The Vander Wal family eventually decided to purchase two quarters of land located just a few miles south of Pipestone. John said. “The alta part was taken from our previous home of Alberta.â€? It wasn’t long before the Vander Wal family set their sights on expansion. Soon after they stated their new dairy, they obtained the permits that allowed them to gradually expand their operation to its present size of 3,300 animal units. They currently have 2,400 registered Holstein cows on their dairy farm. This expansion has made it possible for the next generation to become a part of the operation. Alisha and Trevor, who are in charge of raising the farm’s calves, became shareholders in Newalta Dairy in 2014. “It’s good to be able to work with our family on a daily basis and have the
opportunity to contribute to our dairy operation,â€? Alisha said. Alisha and Trevor have purchased a nearby acreage where they built a facility that houses Newalta Dairy’s dry cows. The Vander Wal family has become deeply involved with their community. John serves on the local American Dairy Association board, is a member of Pipestone County DHIA and is the president of the Minnesota Holstein Association. John has also begun to judge dairy cattle at the Pipestone County Fair. In 2013, Bernice was a dairy princess for Pipestone County. The Vander Wal children have all been heavily involved in showing and judging dairy animals. The Vander Wals employ 25 non-family members and purchase the majority of their forages from local farmers. “We are still dealing with all of the same farmers that we began with when we ďƒžrst moved here,â€? John said. “We have had a good relationship with our neighbors. They see the value in selling their crops to us and the value in taking back our manure to be used as fertilizer on their land. It has been a beneďƒžcial relationship for everyone.â€? The Vander Wals have lived in the Pipestone area for 11 years and have been working all that time towards becoming U.S. citizens. John and Berlinda were born in Holland and are Dutch citizens. All of their children were born in Alberta and are Canadian citizens.
An investor’s visa that allows immigrants to apply for a temporary green card enabled them to move to Pipestone. The investor’s visa requires that its holders make necessary commercial investments in the United States that creates at least 10 permanent full-time jobs. About two years ago, the Vander Wal family began the application process that would give them permanent green cards. After holding their permanent green cards for a certain amount of time, the Vander Wals will be able to apply for U.S. citizenship. “The whole naturalization process has been frustratingly slow. It’s taking a lot longer that we thought it would,� John said. “But, Pipestone is our family’s home now. We are here to stay.�

A different kind of classroom
High school seniors work on agriculture instructor’s dairy By Cassie Olson

NEILLSVILLE, Wis. – During the week, Amy Gerhardt teaches agriculture classes at the high school in town; on weekends, she joins four of her students in the milking parlor for the farm’s three milking shifts. Most days, she goes by Mrs. Gerhardt; on weekends, the students call her Amy. Gerhardt and her husband, Marty, with her parents, Richard and Debbie Vine, and her brother, Donald Vine, operate their 200-cow dairy near Neillsville, Wis. For the last 20 years, the family has been hiring high school students part time to help complete milking chores. “My parents started hiring some part-time help when I went off to college,” Gerhardt said. “When I started at the school and got to know the students, I would ask some to start working for us as we needed them.” Neillsville High School seniors Dylan McDonald, Dominick Cappadora, Austin Zipfel and Krista Krultz, none of whom grew up on dairy farms, all work part time on their teacher’s farm. McDonald, who said working for the Gerhardts and their family has been his rst experience working on a farm, started milking cows last October. When Gerhardt approached McDonald with the work opportunity, he admits he was nervous. “It was a little intimidating; I wasn’t sure I would be able to do all the projects that make a farm operate,” McDonald said. Krultz had a similar feeling, but she said she learned fast thanks to the help

Krultz got her start on the farm a year and a half ago. Gerhardt approached her with the opportunity to work on the farm after seeing Krultz’s interest in animal science. “I was taking Mrs. Gerhardt’s animal science class and found out that I really liked it. Eventually she asked me if I wanted to work on her farm,” Krultz said. Zipfel is the only student to live on a farm. His family raises beef, but he said he was excited to learn to milk on Gerhardt’s dairy. He is now in his sec-

ond year working on the farm. “We have a feeder farm with 40 beef cows. One day, I got a message on Facebook from Mrs. Gerhardt asking if I wanted to work here,” Zipfel said. “I like physical labor and being in the company of cows, so I thought it was worth it.” The students agreed that working for Gerhardt is unique. Cappadora, who also has worked on the farm for a year and a half, said although he had worked on other farms in the past, he is increasingly thankful for the opportunity to work for the Gerhardts. “This is the best farm I have gotten to work on by far,” Cappadora said. “Working for Mrs. Gerhardt is great. She’s my agriculture teacher, my FFA
advisor and my boss. She’s a great person, and I am glad to have her in my life.” Gerhardt and Marty share a similar sentiment for the students. Gerhardt said she asked each of the four to work on her farm in part due to their hardworking attitudes and lack of experience. “In these four, I could see their attention to detail in the classroom. They get things done and have a good work ethic,” Gerhardt said. “Plus, without previous experience, they didn’t have any bad habits, so I can rest easy knowing they are doing things the way we expect them to.” Turn to GERHARDT | Page 8

Management tips for better colostrum By Ron Johnson

HOLY CROSS, Iowa – It’s a cruel world that greets a newborn calf. All sorts of disease organisms wait to infect the baby. But nature provides help. Colostrum – a newly calved cow’s rst milk – contains antibodies that help keep diseases from getting the upper hand. The passive immunity calves get from their dams’ colostrum is important because calves are not born with active immune systems, said Jennifer Bentley, an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy eld specialist. Bentley talked about newborn calves and colostrum management Feb. 1 during an Iowa Dairy Days session in Holy Cross, Iowa. “Colostrum contains antibodies – technically called immunoglobulins (Ig) – for priming a calf’s immune system,” Bentley said. “In addition, it has a high content of fat to provide energy to the calf.” A newborn calf can absorb the immunoglobulins in colostrum through its small intestine. But, it can also absorb disease-causing organisms. “For this reason, it’s important that calves receive colostrum as soon as possible – not later than three hours after birth,” Bentley said. “And the calving pen must be kept clean to reduce the bacterial load newborn calves are exposed to.” The rst step in collecting clean colostrum is to clean and prep the cow’s teats and udder. “Remember that this cow has not been milked in about 60 days, so the pathogen load on the teat surface is greater than when she is in the milking barn,” Bentley said. Use a disinfecting pre-dip like the one for lactating cows. Leave the disinfectant on for at least 30 seconds. Then, wipe it off with a clean, dry towel or rag. Make sure the milking equipment has been sanitized, too. “It’s a good idea to clean and sanitize this equipment right after every
Storing colostrum “It’s important to know the immediate intent for the colostrum,” Bentley said. “Will it be fed shortly after it’s collected or will it be stored for future use?” The number of bacteria in colostrum can double in as little as 20 minutes, Bentley noted. That means it needs to be stored the right way. “Colostrum can be refrigerated for no more than 24 hours, because bacteria can still grow slowly at refrigeration temperatures,” Bentley said. “Colostrum can also be stored in a freezer. Bags are better than bottles because they allow for even and quick thawing, minimizing chunks of frozen colostrum.” To thaw a bag of frozen colostrum, place it in water that’s 120 degrees Fahrenheit and slowly bring it to feeding temperature – about 102 degrees Fahrenheit. “Don’t try to shorten the thawing process by using hotter water,” Bentley said. “Doing so will destroy or inactivate some of the antibodies.” And try to thaw only the amount that will be used right away. Repeated freezing and thawing reduces colostrum’s quality.

Colostrum replacer Bentley touched on the topic of colostrum replacers, saying they should be used only when good colostrum is not available. “Cows on a farm produce specic antibodies to infectious pathogens they have encountered in their lives and from their environments. When calves receive colostrum replacers, they will not receive the added benets from colostrum sourced from a cow on site,” Bentley said. Feeding Bentley said each farm should design its own colostrum feeding program so it meshes with its overall management practices. But, she did offer these guidelines: One rule of thumb is that a newborn calf should consume colostrum equal to 10 to 12 percent of its weight within eight hours of birth. The ďƒžrst meal should come within four hours of birth and should be up to four quarts of colostrum. Feed the calf a second time when it is 6 to 8 hours old, Bentley said. This second meal should consist of at least two quarts of colostrum. Another
schedule is to feed all four quarts within four hours of birth and then a second feeding is given no later than 12 hours after birth. “The objective is to feed between 100 and 150 grams of Ig as soon as possible after birth,� Bentley said. “If possible, colostrum should be fed on days two and three. This can be colostrum of lower quality or transition milk from the cow’s second and third milking.� It’s important to have colostrum at the right temperature, Bentley said. “Calves naturally prefer liquids that are close to their body temperature of 102 degrees. Colostrum or milk that’s below this temperature may be less palatable, and calves might even refuse to drink,� she said. In addition, feeding a cold liquid can lower a calf’s internal temperature. If that happens, the calf will use energy
to generate heat, instead of using it for growth. “It’s important to consider the time that has elapsed between milk preparation and delivery, to avoid excess cooling,â€? Bentley said. “Milk should be fed between 102 and 107 degrees. Above this range, there’s a risk of burning the calf’s mouth and esophagus.â€? Bentley suggested keeping track of the temperatures of the ďƒžrst and last bottles fed. Doing so can make sure the temperature is in the proper range. Feed colostrum out of a clean bottle that is equipped with a nipple. “Calves should never be forced to drink from a pail because milk can get into the airways and cause aspiration pneumonia or even death,â€? Bentley said. “Never cause stress while feeding a calf. It’s very important to be patient with these young animals. They are just
learning to suckle, and it might take a few minutes to coordinate this action.â€? Use an esophageal tube if a calf is having trouble suckling, Bentley said. But don’t use a tube simply to make calf feeding go faster. Bentley brieďƒ&#x;y reviewed a few other practices that are commonly used in good calf management systems: • Move the newborn calf to a clean, dry place to lessen the chances of bacterial contamination. • Dip the calf’s navel in a solution of chlorohexidine or 7 percent iodine as soon as possible after birth. • Use vaccines to increase the levels of antibodies and boost the calf’s immune system. Bentley recommended that each farm write its own vaccination protocol.

has had a positive impact on the students, as well. Despite having limited experience in agriculture prior to working on the dairy, all four of the students are planning to go into careers related to agriculture, and all cited their job on the farm as motivation to do so. McDonald will be attending Chippewa Valley Technical College next fall to study welding; Cappadora will head
to basic training following graduation before attending University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he will be playing football and studying conservation; Zipfel plans to return to his family’s farm to expand the beef herd; and Krultz will be attending UW-River Falls to study dairy science in hopes of becoming a dairy nutritionist. Gerhardt is pleased with her students’ decisions to pur-
sue their futures in agriculture. “We need them,” Gerhardt said. “We need good kids going into agriculture, and it’s good that they have had a good experience here.” Zipfel said working on the farm has taught him valuable life lessons which help him not only in the classroom, but will be a part of his life long after graduation. “Working here has taught
me that when you work for something, you only get it if you work for it. Hard work separates a dreamer from an achiever,” Zipfel said. Cappadora, who has also shown the Gerhardts’ cows at the Clark County Fair and whose FFA project is on the farm, said he will miss the job once he graduates in May. “I’m going to miss this place. These are some of the best people you could ever work for, and I’m going to miss being around here,” Cappadora said. With graduation approaching in May, the students are excited for what their futures hold. ELLSWORTH, Wis. – For Paige and Hannah Nelson, along with Rachel Coyne, a ďƒžerce love for the Holstein cow runs deep. The three young women, both Nelsons from Ellsworth, Wis., and Coyne from nearby Spring Valley, Wis., were chosen to represent Wisconsin by the state Holstein association as Distinguished Junior Members (DJMs) at the breed association’s junior convention, held in January in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. The application and selection process to become a DJM, all three agreed, is thorough and highly competitive. “To be named a state DJM, the judges look at your dairy background, your dairy and non-dairy activities and honors, involvement in Wisconsin Holstein Association, the animals you own, and your personal views on important or controversial topics in the dairy industry,â€? said Coyne, who grew up on a hobby farm with her parents, Peter and Lisa. Paige and Hannah, daughters of Marc Nelson and Tracy Mitchell, ex-
plained that DJM applicants must be well-rounded individuals in and out of the barn and show ring. “To be an active member, one should be taking part in the events and activities that [Wisconsin Holstein] has to offer, such as cow camp and junior convention. An individual should also be knowledgeable about the dairy cow as well as the industry, and speciďƒžcally their dairy project and herd,â€? Paige said. All three DJMs found their passion for Holstein cattle early in life when they began showing cattle at 3 years old in the Little Dairymen class at the Pierce County Fair. They continued to show at the county fair, and eventually made their way to larger venues like the Wisconsin and Minnesota State Fairs, as well as World Dairy Expo, through their membership in the Wisconsin Holstein Association. Because leadership ability and activities are a must when applying for the honor of DJM, the trio have been involved in a multitude of activities celebrating their love for the Holstein cow. Coyne, whose involvement ran the gamut from being on the PiercePepin dairy bowl team to the photography contest, credits her time as a

VOLGA, S.D. – The estate of a Brookings County dairy farmer included a $100,000 bequest for the construction of a new museum dedicated to displaying horse drawn farm equipment. Trygve A. Trooien passed away April 5, 2015 at the age of 65. Between the years of 1969 to 1972, Trooien served in the Army, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. During his time in Vietnam, Trooien was exposed to the chemical Agent Orange, which contributed to his steadily declining health and eventual death. Except for his time in the service, Trooien spent his entire life on his beloved family dairy, located near Astoria. Trooien never married. In addition to operating his 30-cow dairy, Trooien was an avid collector of farm related memorabilia. His large collection of bib overalls was known far and wide. Trooien often held fashion reviews which featured young ladies modeling some of his rare and one of a kind bib overalls. Trooien was also fond of horse drawn farm equipment. Each summer, a group of his likeminded friends would gather at the Trooien dairy for a threshing bee. Later in the fall, a similar gathering would be held to cut standing corn with binders, haul the resulting bundles to the Trooien farmstead and chop them into silage with a stationary cutter. At random times during the summer, Trooien would arrange for several teams of horses and horse drawn mowers to descend upon a local alfalfa eld and clip the hay. Motorists would pull over and small crowds would gather to watch as the men and their teams of gentle giants calmly and quietly laid down the entire eld of alfalfa. Harold Christianson, president of the Brookings County Historical Society, said Trooien’s bequest was most welcome. “Our present machine shed is so overcrowded that we don’t have enough room to house all of our horse drawn equipment. Some of it is currently being stored outside,” Christianson said. “With this bequest, we plan to construct a 30- by 80-foot building next to our present museum facility in the Volga City Park.” The Trygve A. Trooien South Dakota Horse Drawn Museum will open its doors sometime this coming summer. The museum will the rst in the state that is dedicated to showcasing horse drawn farm equipment. In addition to horse drawn equipment, the museum will feature historical photographs and smaller items associated with horse drawn equipment. The Trooien estate has donated several items of horse drawn farm equipment to join the collection already on display at the Brookings County Historical Museum. Plans for the museum have been nalized and the Brookings County Historical Society has hired a contractor. “We have decided not to start construction until after Volga’s Old Timers Days. That way, people won’t have to step around the construction site during Old Timers Days events in the Volga City Park,” Christianson said.

Hannah agreed that the networking she’s been able to do through Wisconsin Holstein has aided her in the dairy industry. “I have met so many other people and learned so much from them,” Hannah said. “As with any organization or experience, the most valuable part is the people.” All three DJMs have decided to make their lives’ work revolve around the love they share for the Holstein cow. Coyne and Paige are college freshmen at the University of Minnesota and University of WisconsinRiver Falls, respectively. “My future career is undecided, but I am sure that I want to work on a dairy farm or work for a dairy-based company doing some type of communications or advertising,” Coyne said. “I will continue to grow my herd of registered Holstein cattle and would like to be a dairy judging coach and Junior Holstein leader.” Paige, who hopes to work in sales after graduation, is particularly interested in veterinary pharmaceuticals. “I hope to stay involved by coaching dairy bowl and helping with other activities,” Paige said. Hannah, a senior in high school, is looking at attending either University of Wisconsin-River Falls or Cornell University to study dairy science. Her advice to young members of breed associations, particularly girls, is simple. “Don’t hesitate,” Hannah said. “If

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in both 4-H and FFA. I participate in showing dairy cattle and have shown market goats as well. In FFA, I serve as our chapter’s treasurer and compete on our chapter’s dairy judging team. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? My older siblings had also been involved in these organizations which encouraged me to be in them, also. At the end of my sophomore year in FFA, I decided to run for ofcer. Since then, I have held an ofcer position for two years and have become fond of the organization. The whole atmosphere as well as the people and experiences have impacted me. FFA is something I truly enjoy being a part of. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. When I went to the National FFA Convention, Indiana, with six others from our chapter this past fall. We were there for ve days and were able to attend a concert, talent show, rodeo, tour a bee farm and the Indy race track, as well as listen to speakers, attend workshops and walk around the expo. It was amazing to see people from all around the United States at the convention and meet people from other states. Our chapter had a great group, and we all had a great time. What’s your favorite social media and why? Facebook. Although I don’t use it much, it’s a great opportunity to connect with others as well as share

Next year, I plan on working somewhere and taking the year off from school, hopefully guring out something after that. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I have learned many new things from being in these organizations. One of the most signicant would be the knowledge the public has on the agriculture and dairy industries. I have realized that not everyone knows where their food comes from and how it gets to them, whether they’re young or old. From that, I have gained the understanding of the importance for education. Who do you look up to and why? I look up to my parents because they are good examples of people who are honest, trustworthy and diligent in their work. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I enjoy participating in my school’s musical. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. On the farm, I help with chores by feeding chickens, helping feed calves and milk cows in the evening.

Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders’ Association sponsors essay calf contest One fortunate Wisconsin youth will be the recipient of a registered Guernsey calf during the Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders’ Association (WGBA) annual convention on March 10-11 in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. This calf will be awarded to the youth who writes the best essay on their choice of two topics: (1) “What a Guernsey calf would mean to me” or (2) “The Guernsey cow is important to me because...” Essays are currently being accepted for this 19th annual contest. Entrants do not need to have a Guernsey background or be from a Guernsey farm. The essay winner will be announced during the youth luncheon at the WGBA state convention on March 11. Contest guidelines include: Essay should be a minimum of 250 words on the topic of “what a Guernsey calf would mean to me” or the topic “the Guernsey cow is important to me because…”; Contest is open to Wisconsin youth ages 10-17 WGBA Sponsors Essay Calf Contest / Add One; Entrant should include plans for housing, responsibilities or plans for caring for the calf and show opportunities in the essay; Winner must agree to exhibit the calf at shows and give a report on the calf at the WGBA annual meeting after winning; Winner must be willing to join the Wisconsin Junior Guernsey Breeders’ Association for a one time fee of $15.00. Holstein Association USA ofcially identies record number of Holstein cattle Holstein Association USA, Inc. ofcially identied an all-time record number of Holstein cattle in 2016 through their registration and Basic ID programs. In total, 690,553 Holsteins were identied in 2016, which is 108,867 more or 18 percent higher than 2015. Registrations totaled 377,305 and 313,248 head were enrolled in the Basic ID program. The Basic ID program is a stepping stone to full registry status. Participation in Holstein Association USA identication programs has never been higher. According to Holstein Association CEO John M. Meyer, “These statistics speak to the value dairy producers realize from Holstein Association identication programs. As we all know, the dairy economy was tough in 2016. Even so, dairymen across the country continued to increase their participation in our programs.” When asked for the reason for the popularity of Holsteins, Meyer stated, “The market versatility of Holstein milk continues to pay dividends to Holstein breeders. Those looking to maximize Cheese Yield have 335 Holstein bulls to choose from with Cheese Merit Dollar indexes of 820 CM$ or higher. By comparison, no other breed has any bulls with a Cheese Merit Dollar index of 820 CM$ or higher.” Meyer continues, “One of the great things about being in the Holstein business is that we have a bountiful array of diversied genetics to choose from that allows dairies to be the best in class in any dairy market they want to be in. The large volumes of high quality milk produced by Holsteins are coveted in all dairy markets.” Wisconsin Holstein scholarship applications due March 1 The Wisconsin Holstein Association is seeking students enrolled in a four-year, one or two-year or short course or technical school ag-related program to apply for available scholarships that range from $250 to $1000. The Gordon Berg and Marlowe Nelson Memorial Scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in a technical college, two-year, or short course agriculture program in the amount of $1,000 each. The Doris Morris Memorial Scholarship and Bradley Fust Memorial Scholarship recipients also receive a $1,000. The John Klossner Memorial Scholarship and John Selz Memorial Scholarships will also be awarded in the amount of $1,000. New for 2017 is the Geraldine Cooper Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded in the amount of $500. Eligibility for all scholarships requires that applicants be a member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association at the time of application, enrolled in a four-year college, a one or two-year tech school, a short course program, or be a high school senior admitted into one of the before mentioned programs. Scholarships are capped at $1,000 per scholarship recipient. Previous winners who were awarded less than the $1,000 can apply again. In 2016, the Scholarship Committee awarded over $16,000 in scholarships to Wisconsin Holstein members. University of Minnesota Extension, sponsored by Pine Country Bank, will be presenting their newest farm nancial workshop “Taking Charge of Your Finances: How to Survive and Thrive” on Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. This 4-hour workshop is lled with an interactive case study that provides information and strategies to help farm families be better prepared to make internal farm management decisions and also build stronger relationships with external partners. In “Taking Charge of Your Finances: How to Survive and Thrive,” participants get a greater understanding of balance sheets, income statements, and cash ows. They will also be better equipped to utilize their farm nancial records and will have a greater understanding of the nancial tools that will assist them with making better nancial management and nancing decisions. As part of the workshop, participants will act as a loan review committee to analyze the credit worthiness of a case study farm. With milk prices in a slump, dairy farmers are nding it more challenging to turn a prot. In addition, attention continues to grow on the move to robotics. What makes economic sense during these economic times? UMN Extension has organized workshops to take place in Rushford on Feb. 14 and in Plainview on the 15 to address these questions through presentations from Extension Educators and panels of local dairy professionals. Jim Salfer, UMN Extension Educator, will present “Maintaining prot in a turbulent economic environment”. He’ll provide strategies to navigate through times of narrow margins. Attendees will learn some of the key methods of management for periods of lower protability. Are you trying to decide if a robotic system is right for your farm? Jim will also present on research measuring the returns to robotic dairies. He’ll cover the drivers of protability, and the key management practices that improve protability and performance. He’ll also share a dashboard tool you can use to evaluate if robotic milking is for you. Organizers have gathered panels of local dairy professionals including veterinarians, nutritionists, farm business management instructors, bankers, and FSA lenders to provide their tips and answer questions on how dairy farmers can better deal with these challenging times. Registration at both locations starts at 10 a.m., and the program runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 pm. NOTE: This auction features an outstanding set of home-raised, high producing Holsteins out of the heart of one of central Minnesota’s top herds. The Hollermanns began farming on this farm in 1976 with the third generation now involved in their farming operation. The Hollermanns goal was to produce sound functional females that meet the high genomic standards of today’s dairymen and women. With their goal in sight, the Hollermanns have decided to share their 40 plus years of hard work and dedication to producing outstanding Holstein cattle by offering a great set of high producing females in their first production sale.
